3. Patterning edge-like defects and tuning defective areas on the basal plane of ultra-large MoS$_{2}$ monolayers toward hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract

The catalytic sites of MoS$_{2}$ monolayers towards hydrogen evolution are well known to be vacancies and edge-like defects. However, it is still very challenging to control the position, size, and defective areas on the basal plane of Mo$S_{2}$ monolayers by most of defect-engineering routes. In this work, the fabrication of etched arrays on ultra-large supported and free-standing MoS$_{2}$ monolayers using focused ion beam (FIB) is reported for the first time. By tuning the Ga+ ion dose, it is possible to confine defects near the etched edges or spread them over ultra-large areas on the basal plane. The electrocatalytic activity of the arrays toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was measured by fabricating microelectrodes using a new method that preserves the catalytic sites. We demonstrate that the overpotential can be decreased up to 290 mV by assessing electrochemical activity only at the basal plane. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images obtained on FIB patterned freestanding MoS$_{2}$ monolayers reveal the presence of amorphous regions and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates sulfur excess in these regions. Density-functional theory calculations provide identification of catalytic defect sites. Our results demonstrate a new rational control of amorphous-crystalline surface boundaries and future insight for defect optimization in MoS$_{2}$ monolayers., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Multi-controlled unitary gates have been a subject of interest in quantum computing since its inception, and are widely used in quantum algorithms. The current state-of-the-art approach to implementing n-qubit multi-controlled gates involves the use of a quadratic number of single-qubit and CNOT gates. However, linear solutions are possible for the case where the controlled gate is a special unitary SU(2). The most widely-used decomposition of an n-qubit multi-controlled SU(2) gate requires a circuit with a number of CNOT gates proportional to 28n. In this work, we present a new decomposition of n-qubit multi-controlled SU(2) gates that requires a circuit with a number of CNOT gates proportional to 20n, and proportional to 16n if the SU(2) gate has at least one real-valued diagonal. This new approach significantly improves the existing algorithm by reducing the number of CNOT gates and the overall circuit depth. As an application, we show the use of this decomposition for sparse quantum state preparation. Our results are further validated by demonstrating a proof of principle on a quantum device accessed through quantum cloud services.

Abstract

Ubiquitous in quantum computing is the step to encode data into a quantum state. This process is called quantum state preparation, and its complexity for non-structured data is exponential on the number of qubits. Several works address this problem, for instance, by using variational methods that train a fixed depth circuit with manageable complexity. These methods have their limitations, as the lack of a back-propagation technique and barren plateaus. This work proposes an algorithm to reduce state preparation circuit depth by offloading computational complexity to a classical computer. The initialized quantum state can be exact or an approximation, and we show that the approximation is better on today's quantum processors than the initialization of the original state. Experimental evaluation demonstrates that the proposed method enables more efficient initialization of probability distributions in a quantum state.

Abstract

We measure the colloidal interaction between two silica microspheres in aqueous solution in the distance range from $0.2\,\mu$m to $0.5\,\mu$m with the help of optical tweezers. When employing a sample with a low salt concentration, the resulting interaction is dominated by the repulsive double-layer interaction which is fully characterized. The double-layer interaction is suppressed when adding $0.22\,$M of salt to our sample, thus leading to a purely attractive Casimir signal. When analyzing the experimental data for the potential energy and force, we find good agreement with theoretical results based on the scattering approach. At the distance range probed experimentally, the interaction arises mainly from the unscreened transverse magnetic contribution in the zero-frequency limit, with nonzero Matsubara frequencies providing a negligible contribution. In contrast, such unscreened contribution is not included by the standard theoretical model of the Casimir interaction in electrolyte solutions, in which the zero-frequency term is treated separately as an electrostatic fluctuational effect. As a consequence, the resulting attraction is too weak in this standard model, by approximately one order of magnitude, to explain the experimental data. Abstract

Loading data in a quantum device is required in several quantum computing applications. Without an efficient loading procedure, the cost to initialize the algorithms can dominate the overall computational cost. A circuit-based quantum random access memory named FF-QRAM can load M n-bit patterns with computational cost O(CMn) to load continuous data where C depends on the data distribution. In this work, we propose a strategy to load continuous data without post-selection with computational cost O(Mn). The proposed method is based on the probabilistic quantum memory, a strategy to load binary data in quantum devices, and the FF-QRAM using standard quantum gates, and is suitable for noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers.

Abstract

Exploring the concept of the extended Galilei group G. Representations for field theories in a symplectic manifold have been derived in association with the method of the Wigner function. The representation is written in the light-cone of a de Sitter space-time in five dimensions. A Hilbert space is constructed, endowed with a symplectic structure, which is used as a representation space for the Lie algebra of G. This representation gives rise to the spin-zero Schr\"odinger (Klein-Gordon-like) equation for the wave functions in phase space, such that the dependent variables have the content of position and linear momentum. This is a particular example of a conformal theory, such that the wave functions are associated with the Wigner function through the Moyal product. We construct the Pauli-Schr\"odinger (Dirac-like) equation in phase space in its explicitly covariant form. In addition, we analyze the gauge symmetry for spin 1/2 particles in phase space and show how to implement the minimal coupling in this case. We applied to the problem of an electron in an external field, and we recovered the non-relativistic Landau Levels. Through superposition, a quantum computer is capable of representing an exponentially large set of states, according to the number of qubits available. Quantum machine learning is a subfield of quantum computing that explores the potential of quantum computing to enhance machine learning algorithms. An approach of quantum machine learning named quantum ensembles of quantum classifiers consists of using superposition to build an exponentially large ensemble of classifiers to be trained with an optimization-free learning algorithm. Abstract

Real-time gas classification is an essential issue and challenge in applications such as food and beverage quality control, accident prevention in industrial environments, for instance. In recent years, the Deep Learning (DL) models have shown great potential to classify and forecast data in diverse problems, even in the electronic nose (E-Nose) field. In this work, we used a Support Vector Machines (SVM) algorithm and three different DL models to validate the rapid detection approach (based on processing an early portion of raw signals and a rising window protocol) over different measurement conditions. We performed a set of trials with five different E-Nose databases that include fifteen datasets. Based on the results, we concluded that the proposed approach has a high potential, and it can be suitable to be used for E-nose technologies, reducing the necessary time for making forecasts and accelerating the response time. Because in most cases, it achieved reliable estimates using only the first 30% or fewer of measurement data (counted after the gas injection starts.) The findings suggest that the rapid detection approach generates reliable forecasting models using different classification methods. Still, SVM seems to obtain the best accuracy, right window size, and better training time., Comment: 13 pages, two figures, and two tables. Abstract

Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problems (RCPSPs) without preemption are well-known NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. A feasible RCPSP solution consists of a time-ordered schedule of jobs with corresponding execution modes, respecting precedence and resources constraints. In this paper, we propose a cutting plane algorithm to separate five different cut families, as well as a new preprocessing routine to strengthen resource-related constraints. New lifted versions of the well-known precedence and cover inequalities are employed. At each iteration, a dense conflict graph is built considering feasibility and optimality conditions to separate cliques, odd-holes and strengthened Chv\'atal-Gomory cuts. The proposed strategies considerably improve the linear relaxation bounds, allowing a state-of-the-art mixed-integer linear programming solver to find provably optimal solutions for 754 previously open instances of different variants of the RCPSPs, which was not possible using the original linear programming formulations.

Abstract

We present an analytical model to study the dynamics of the outer edge of Saturn's A ring. The latter is influenced by 7:6 mean motion resonances with Janus and Epimetheus. Because of the horseshoe motion of the two co-orbital moons, the ring edge particles are alternately trapped in a corotation eccentricity resonance (CER) or a Lindblad eccentricity resonance (LER). However, the resonance oscillation periods are longer than the 4-year interval between the switches in the orbits of Janus and Epimetheus. Averaged equations of motion are used, and our model is numerically integrated to describe the effects of the periodic sweeping of the 7:6 CERs and LERs over the ring edge region. We show that four radial zones (ranges 136715-136723, 136738-136749, 136756-136768, 136783-136791 km) are chaotic on decadal timescales, within which particle semi-major axes have periodic changes due to partial libration motions around the CER fixed points. After a few decades, the maximum variation of semi-major axis is about 11 km (respectively 3 km) in the case of the CER with Janus (respectively Epimetheus). Similarly, particle eccentricities have partial oscillations forced by the LERs every 4 yr. For initially circular orbits, the maximum eccentricity reached is ~0.001. We apply our work to "Peggy", an object recently discovered at the ring edge, confirming that it is strongly perturbed by the Janus 7:6 LER. The CER has currently no effect on that body, nevertheless the fitted semi-major axes are just outside the chaotic zone of radial range 136756-136768 km.

Abstract

This paper proposes a quantum-classical algorithm to evaluate and select classical artificial neural networks architectures. The proposed algorithm is based on a probabilistic quantum memory and the possibility to train artificial neural networks in superposition. We obtain an exponential quantum speedup in the evaluation of neural networks. We also verify experimentally through a reduced experimental analysis that the proposed algorithm can be used to select near-optimal neural networks.

44. The magnetocaloric effect from the point of view of Tsallis non-extensive thermostatistics

Abstract

In this work we have analyzed the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) from the Tsallis thermostatistics formalism (TTF) point of view. The problem discussed here is a two level system MCE. We have calculated, both analytically and numerically, the entropy of this system as a function of the Tsallis' parameter (the well known q-parameter) which value depends on the extensivity (q<1) or non-extensivity (q>1) of the system. Since we consider this MCE not depending on the initial conditions, which classify our system as a non-extensive one, we used several greater than one q-parameters to understand the effect of the nonextensive formalism in the entropy as well as the magnetocaloric potential, $\Delta S$. We have plotted several curves that shows precisely the behavior of this effect when dealt with non-extensive statistics., Comment: 11 pages. 10 figures. Preprint format

Abstract

Complex networks are nowadays employed in several applications. Modeling urban street networks is one of them, and in particular to analyze criminal aspects of a city. Several research groups have focused on such application, but until now, there is a lack of a well-defined methodology for employing complex networks in a whole crime analysis process, i.e. from data preparation to a deep analysis of criminal communities. Furthermore, the "toolset" available for those works is not complete enough, also lacking techniques to maintain up-to-date, complete crime datasets and proper assessment measures. In this sense, we propose a threefold methodology for employing complex networks in the detection of highly criminal areas within a city. Our methodology comprises three tasks: (i) Mapping of Urban Crimes; (ii) Criminal Community Identification; and (iii) Crime Analysis. Moreover, it provides a proper set of assessment measures for analyzing intrinsic criminality of communities, especially when considering different crime types. We show our methodology by applying it to a real crime dataset from the city of San Francisco - CA, USA. The results confirm its effectiveness to identify and analyze high criminality areas within a city. Abstract

Since 2004, the images obtained by Cassini spacecraft's on-board cameras have revealed the existence of several small satellites in the Saturn system. Some of these small satellites are embedded in arcs of particles. While these satellites and their arcs are known to be in corotation resonances with Mimas, their origin remains unknown. This work investigates one possible process for capturing bodies into a corotation resonance, which involves raising the eccentricity of a perturbing body. Therefore, through numerical simulations and analytical studies, we show a scenario that the excitation of Mimas' eccentricity could capture particles in a corotation resonance and given a possible explanation for the origin for the arcs., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures and 1 table
