7. Anaemia among adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women in the southern rural region of Bangladesh: Prevalence and risk factors.

Abstract

Anaemia is a major public health concern in developing countries, particularly among children, adolescents, and women of reproductive age. The study aimed to assess the anaemia status among adolescent girls, pregnant, and lactating women with their contributing factors in the southern rural regions of Bangladesh. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 adolescent girls, 375 pregnant, and 375 lactating women using a multistage cluster-random sampling technique. Anaemia was measured through haemoglobin concentration in blood capillaries collected with a Hemocue 301 machine. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with anaemia. The average age of pregnant and lactating women was 24 years and 15.2 years for girls. Overall, the prevalence of anaemia was 50% among pregnant women, 46% among lactating women, and 38% among adolescent girls. The risk of anaemia among adolescent girls was higher among non-Muslim (aOR = 2.13, 95%CI:1.05–4.31), belonged to families having >5 members (aOR = 2.24, 95%CI:1.16–4.31) while exposure to media reduced their risk (aOR = 0.33, 95%CI:0.15–0.74). Pregnant women who consumed a diversified diet, washed their hands after toilet, and received ≥4 ANC visits had a lower likelihood of developing anaemia. Lactating women who were employed, consumed a diversified diet, washed their hands before preparing food, and after toilet, had been exposed to media, received ≥4 ANC visits, and consumed ≥90 IFA, had a lower risk of developing anaemia. However, anaemia was more likely to be associated with lactating women who were non-Muslim (aOR = 3.75; 95%CI:1.26–11.22). The high prevalence of anaemia emphasizes the need to reconsider the existing strategy for the prevention and control of micronutrient deficiencies in Bangladesh. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The contribution of seafood to global food security is being increasingly highlighted in policy. However, the extent to which such claims are supported in the current food security literature is unclear. This review assesses the extent to which seafood is represented in the recent food security literature, both individually and from a food systems perspective, in combination with terrestrially-based production systems. The results demonstrate that seafood remains under-researched compared to the role of terrestrial animal and plant production in food security. Furthermore, seafood and terrestrial production remain siloed, with very few papers addressing the combined contribution or relations between terrestrial and aquatic systems. We conclude that far more attention is needed to the specific and relative role of seafood in global food security and call for the integration of seafood in a wider interdisciplinary approach to global food system research.

Abstract

The state of malnourishment among children <5 years age span is the major public health issue around the globe. This under nourished state of child has multitude socio-demographic, economic and medical dynamics. Adequate mothers’ nutritional knowledge along with positive attitude about breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices can be used as the combat tool to avoid malnourishment among children. Present study designed to know the KAP of mothers regarding breastfeeding and complementary feeding of malnourished children. Researcher used quantitative research design and select N=485 mothers visiting the targeted stabilization center of Children Hospital Multan through simple random sampling technique. The findings of the study revealed that there is a significant and positive relationship between breast feeding duration and malnourishment among children <5 years age span. Moreover, lack of knowledge, negative attitude and improper practices of mothers about breastfeeding becomes the major cause of child malnourishment. Role of media in provision of logical arguments and awareness campaigns along with the support provision by health care professionals can combat the pathetic situation of malnourishment in the study vicinity. Abstract

In recent years, nanomaterials as photocatalysts have gained much popularity for the removal of organic pollutants from tainted water using photodegradation, since the available chemical, physical, and biological methods are often time consuming, involve high cost and dumping complications, sometimes posing serious threat to both human health and environmental elements. The use of nanomaterials is less expensive and does not, in general, form aggregated macromolecules. In addition, nanotechnology for waste-water treatment demolishes or alters the risky chemical wastes to harmless end products like H2O and CO2. Nanomaterials synthesized from natural resources or prepared using green synthetic routes are receiving a surge of interest as our consciousness of the ecological environment and safety rises. ‘Green’ materials of this kind might also show unique strength features and exceptional biodegradability, along with their other notable advantageous properties like a minimum threat to the environment, efficient recyclability and low cost compared to synthetic nanomaterials. Such green nanomaterials can also serve as nanocatalysts to treat toxic organic pollutants in a safer way, including photodegradation to less or non-toxic products. This article reviews the latest developments on the synthesis of some promising green nanomaterials aiming towards their efficient uses as photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants. Strategies to find new green materials as photocatalysts through the modification of technologies and the development of novel methodologies for the safer treatment of organic pollutants will also be discussed.

Abstract

The modular structure of bacterial ribonuclease P (RNase P) ribozymes, which recognize tertiary structures of precursor tRNAs (pre-tRNAs) to cleave their 5′ leader sequence, can be dissected physically into the two structured domain RNAs (S-domain and C-domain). Separately prepared S-domain RNA and C-domain RNA assemble to form bimolecular forms of RNase P ribozymes. We analyzed the effects of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) on pre-tRNA cleavage catalyzed by bimolecular RNase P ribozymes to examine the effects of molecular crowding on the reaction. PEG molecular crowders significantly enhanced the activities of bimolecular RNase P ribozymes, some of which were hardly active without PEGs.
