This work proposes a centrality-based approach to identify data offloading points in a VSN. The solution presents a scheme to select vehicles used as aggregation points to collect and aggregate other vehicles' data before uploading it to processing stations. We evaluate the proposed solution in a realis tic simulation scenario derived from data traffic containing more than 700,000 individual car trips for 24 hours. We compare our approach with both a reservation-based algorithm and the optimal solution. Our results indicate an upload cost reduction of 30.92\% using the centrality-based algorithm and improving the aggregation rate by up to 10.45% when considering the centralized scenario.

This paper examines the impact of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on the capacity of distribution feeders and transformers within the electric grid at California State University Northridge (CSUN). With the increasing adoption of both residential and commercial EVs and the rapid expansion of EV charging infrastructure, it is critical to evaluate the potential overloading effects of intensive EV charging on power distribution systems. This research assesses the impact of EV charging on the operation of CSUN's electric grid, identifying potential overload risks under projected EV adoption scenarios. Detailed simulations and analyses are conducted to quantify the extent of these impacts, focusing on various levels of EV penetration and charging patterns. The study also explores the impact of distributed generation on reducing the stress incurred by EV loads. The findings provide essential insights for utility companies, highlighting the need for strategic upgrades to distribution systems. These insights will help in developing robust strategies for both current operations and future planning to accommodate growing EV charging demands, ensuring grid stability and reliability in the face of increasing electrification of the transportation sector. This study aims to optimize vehicular user association to base stations in a mobile network. We propose an efficient heuristic solution that considers the base station average handover frequency, the channel quality indicator, and bandwidth capacity. We evaluate this solution using real-world base station locations from S\~ao Paulo, Brazil, and the SUMO mobility simulator. We compare our approach against a state of the art solution which uses route prediction, maintaining or surpassing the provided quality of service with the same number of handover operations. Additionally, the proposed solution reduces the execution time by more than 80\% compared to an exact method, while achieving optimal solutions.

The rapid urbanization growth has underscored the need for innovative solutions to enhance transportation efficiency and safety. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have emerged as a promising solution in this context. However, analyzing and processing the massive and intricate data generated by ITS presents significant challenges for traditional data processing systems. This work proposes an Edge-based Data Lake Architecture to integrate and analyze the complex data from ITS efficiently. The architecture offers scalability, fault tolerance, and performance, improving decision-making and enhancing innovative services for a more intelligent transportation ecosystem. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the architecture through an analysis of three different use cases: (i) Vehicular Sensor Network, (ii) Mobile Network, and (iii) Driver Identification applications.

To describe the spatial trajectory of an overdamped Brownian particle, inertial effects can be neglected. Yet, at the energetic level of stochastic thermodynamics, changes in kinetic energy must be considered to accurately predict the heat exchanged with the thermal bath. On the other hand, in the presence of external driving forces, one would expect the effects of kinetic energy fluctuations to be reduced, as thermal noise becomes comparatively less relevant. Here, we investigate the competition between the kinetic energy and the external work contributions to the heat statistics of passive and active overdamped Brownian particles subject to external driving forces. We find that kinetic energy effects cause fluctuations in the exchanged heat to become non-Gaussian. To evaluate the relevance of these effects, we compute the excess kurtosis and the Pearson correlation. For fixed parameter values adapted from experiments, we identify a crossover transition from a regime in which the stochastic heat of overdamped particles is dominated by external work, where kinetic energy changes can be safely ignored, to a regime dominated by kinetic energy effects. Cooperative effects such as super- and subradiance can be observed in the fluorescence emitted by a system of N atoms in vacuum, after interaction with a laser beam. In the vicinity of a dielectric or metallic surface, Casimir-Polder effects can modify collective atomic frequency shifts and decay rates. In this work, we study cooperative fluorescent emission next to resonant surfaces using the coupled dipoles model. We show that cooperative effects, expected in free space, are absent when the atoms are close to a surface whose polariton resonances coincide with the dominant atomic dipole coupling. In this case, cooperative effects are overshadowed by the very fast decay of the atomic fluorescence into surface modes. We illustrate our formalism and our results by considering a line of cesium 6D3/2 atoms in front of a sapphire surface. Finally, we propose the study of Cesium 6P3/2 atoms in front of a resonant metasurface as the most promising scenario for experimentally demonstrating the results of our study., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The Hamiltonian analysis for the linearized $\lambda R$ gravity plus a Chern-Simons term is performed. The first-class and second-class constraints for arbitrary values of $\lambda$ are presented, and one physical degree of freedom is reported. The second-class constraints are removed, and the corresponding generalized Dirac brackets are constructed; then, the difference between theories with different values of $\lambda$ is remarked.

We revisit the quantum-mechanical two-dimensional harmonic oscillator with an electric field confined to a circular box of impenetrable walls. In order to obtain the energy spectrum we resort to the Rayleigh-Ritz method with polynomial and Gaussian basis sets. We compare present results with those derived recently by other authors. We discuss the limits of large and small box radius and also do some calculations with perturbation theory.

The quasiparticle density observed in low-temperature superconducting circuits is several orders of magnitude higher than the value expected at thermal equilibrium. The tunneling of this excess of quasiparticles across Josephson junctions is recognized as one of the main loss and decoherence mechanisms in superconducting qubits. Here we propose an additional loss mechanism arising from nonequilibrium quasiparticle densities: Ohmic loss due to quasiparticles residing in superconducting wires away from the junctions. Our theory leverages the recent experimental demonstration that the excess quasiparticles are in quasiequilibrium [T. Connolly et al., $\href{https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.217001}{Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 132}, 217001 (2024)}$] and uses a generalized fluctuation-dissipation theorem to predict the amount of charge and flux noise generated by them. We show that the resulting charge noise can be larger than dielectric loss due to amorphous two-level systems at frequencies in the MHz range, and find a logarithmic-in-frequency ``nearly white" contribution to flux noise that is comparable to the flux noise observed in experiments. This shows that wire-resident quasiparticles are a universal source of loss and decoherence even when the quasiparticles are far away from Josephson junctions., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

In intertemporal settings, the multiattribute utility theory of Kihlstrom and Mirman suggests the application of a concave transform of the lifetime utility index. This construction, while allowing time and risk attitudes to be separated, leads to dynamically inconsistent preferences. We address this issue in a game-theoretic sense by formalizing an equilibrium control theory for continuous-time Markov processes. In these terms, we describe the equilibrium strategy and value function as the solution of an extended Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman system of partial differential equations. We verify that (the solution of) this system is a sufficient condition for an equilibrium and examine some of its novel features. A consumption-investment problem for an agent with CRRA-CES utility showcases our approach.

Electronic fluids can display exciting dynamical properties. In particular, due to Landau damping, the collective modes spectrum of an electronic system with multipolar interactions is non-hermitian, and can present non-hermitian degeneracies called $\textit{exceptional points}$. In this work, we want to explore the dynamical properties of these degeneracies using laser control. We show that by using a light pulse, we can control the collective mode spectrum and tune a non-hermitian $\mathcal{PT}$ phase transition in which two exceptional points anhilate each other. A promising strategy to address the pressing challenges with wildfire, particularly in the wildland-urban interface (WUI), involves developing new approaches for preventing and controlling wildfire within wildlands. Among sprayable fire-retardant materials, water-enhancing gels have emerged as exceptionally effective for protecting civil infrastructure. They possess favorable wetting and viscoelastic properties that reduce the likelihood of ignition, maintaining strong adherence to a wide array of surfaces after application. Although current water-enhancing hydrogels effectively maintain surface wetness by creating a barricade, they rapidly desiccate and lose efficacy under high heat and wind typical of wildfire conditions. To address this limitation, we developed unique biomimetic hydrogel materials from sustainable cellulosic polymers crosslinked by colloidal silica particles that exhibit ideal viscoelastic properties and facile manufacturing. Under heat activation, the hydrogel transitions into a highly porous and thermally insulative silica aerogel coating in situ, providing a robust protective layer against ignition of substrates, even when the hydrogel fire suppressant becomes completely desiccated. By confirming the mechanical properties, substrate adherence, and enhanced substrate protection against fire, these heat-activatable biomimetic hydrogels emerge as promising candidates for next-generation water-enhancing fire suppressants. In the extreme near-field, when the spatial extension of the atomic wavefunction is no longer negligible compared to the atom-surface distance, the dipole approximation is no longer sufficient to describe Casimir-Polder interactions. Here we calculate the higher-order, quadrupole and octupole, contributions to Casimir-Polder energy shifts of Rydberg atoms close to a dielectric surface. We subsequently investigate the effects of these higher-order terms in thin-cell and selective reflection spectroscopy. We present a computational study of the parametric excitation of spin waves in thin film disks with a mode-resolved approach. The method involves projecting out the time-dependent magnetization, computed using micromagnetics simulations, onto the spatial profile of the eigenmodes that are obtained from the linearization of the equations of motion. Unlike spectral analysis in the frequency domain, the projection allows for the analysis of transient mode dynamics under parametric excitation. We apply this method to parallel pumping of quantized spin wave modes in in-plane magnetized thin-film disks, where phenomena such as frequency pulling, mutual phase locking, and higher-order magnon scattering processes are identified., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

The inverse spin Hall effect used for detection of spin currents was observed by voltage measurements in bilayers of normal metal (NM)/ferromagnetic metal (FM), using Nb, Mo and Bi as normal metal and Permalloy (Py, Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$) as ferromagnetic metal. The spin current was generated by the spin pumping effect with ferromagnetic resonance. The samples were deposited by dc magnetron sputtering at room temperature on Si (001) substrates. Miniaturizing and integrating atomic vapor cells is widely investigated for the purposes of fundamental measurements and technological applications such as quantum sensing. Extending such platforms to the realm of molecular physics is a fascinating prospect that paves the way for compact frequency metrology as well as for exploring light-matter interactions with complex quantum objects. Here, we perform molecular rovibrational spectroscopy in a thin-cell of micrometric thickness, comparable to excitation wavelengths. We operate the cell in two distinct regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, probing $\nu_1$+$\nu_3$ resonances of acetylene at 1.530$\mu$m, within the telecommunications wavelength range, as well as the $\nu_3$ and $\nu_2$ resonances of $SF_6$ and $NH_3$ respectively, in the mid-infrared fingerprint region around 10.55$\mu$m. Thin-cell confinement allows linear sub-Doppler transmission spectroscopy due to the coherent Dicke narrowing effect, here demonstrated for molecular rovibrations. We demonstrate an experimental protocol for the preparation and control of heralded single photons in inhomogeneously polarized states, such as Vector Vortex and Full Poincar\'e beam states. A laser beam is shaped by a voltage-controlled spin-to-orbital angular momentum converter q-plate device which eliminates the need for an interferometer for the robust preparation of high-quality inhomogeneously polarized beams. Such a beam is then used as pump in a spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) photon-pair source. We demonstrate the full pump to heralded single photon transfer of the intensity/phase distributions, as well as of the vector polarization structure. Additionally, we show that by controlling the polarization to which the heralding idler photon is projected before detection, we can toggle between the direct and basis-switched pump-single photon transfer. We show that this non-local control of the heralded single photon pertains also to the topological class of the resulting heralded single photon. Speech technologies rely on capturing a speaker's voice variability while obtaining comprehensive language information. Textual prompts and sentence selection methods have been proposed in the literature to comprise such adequate phonetic data, referred to as a phonetically rich \textit{corpus}. However, they are still insufficient for acoustic modeling, especially critical for languages with limited resources. Hence, this paper proposes a novel approach and outlines the methodological aspects required to create a \textit{corpus} with broad phonetic coverage for a low-resourced language, Brazilian Portuguese. Our methodology includes text dataset collection up to a sentence selection algorithm based on triphone distribution. Furthermore, we propose a new phonemic classification according to acoustic-articulatory speech features since the absolute number of distinct triphones, or low-probability triphones, does not guarantee an adequate representation of every possible combination. Using our algorithm, we achieve a 55.8\% higher percentage of distinct triphones -- for samples of similar size -- while the currently available phonetic-rich corpus, CETUC and TTS-Portuguese, 12.6\% and 12.3\% in comparison to a non-phonetically rich dataset.

This paper focuses on the coefficient of performance (COP) at maximum figure of merit $\chi$ for a Brownian Carnot-like refrigerator, within the context of symmetric Low-Dissipation approach. Our proposal is based on the Langevin equation for a Brownian particle bounded to a harmonic potential trap, which can perform Carnot-like cycles at finite time. We show that under quasistatic conditions the COP has the same expression as the macroscopic Carnot refrigerator. However, for irreversible cycles at finite time and under symmetric dissipation, the optimal COP is the counterpart of Curzon-Ahlborn efficiency for irreversible macroscopic refrigerators., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We study a discrete-time consumption-based capital asset pricing model under expectations-based reference-dependent preferences. More precisely, we consider an endowment economy populated by a representative agent who derives utility from current consumption and from gains and losses in consumption with respect to a forward-looking, stochastic reference point. First, we consider a general model in which the agent's preferences include both contemporaneous gain-loss utility, that is, utility from the difference between current consumption and previously held expectations about current consumption, and prospective gain-loss utility, that is, utility from the difference between intertemporal beliefs about future consumption. A semi-closed form solution for equilibrium asset prices is derived for this case. We then specialize to a model in which the agent derives contemporaneous gain-loss utility only, obtaining equilibrium asset prices in closed form. Extensive numerical experiments show that, with plausible values of risk aversion and loss aversion, our models can generate equity premia that match empirical estimates. Interestingly, the models turn out to be consistent with some well-known empirical facts, namely procyclical variation in the price-dividend ratio and countercyclical variation in the conditional expected equity premium and in the conditional volatility of the equity premium. Furthermore, we find that prospective gain-loss utility is necessary for the model to predict reasonable values of the price-dividend ratio.
