The large radiation of terrestrial isopods (suborder Oniscidea) includes several families that are represented primarily in marine-littoral or riparian habitats. Among these are members of Ligiidae and Tylidae as well as several basal families within the section Crinocheta. Structural and physiological evidence supports a marine-littoral ancestry of the Oniscidea. We examined aerial and aquatic respiration (measured as VCO2) in six species of marine-littoral Oniscidea representing five families, as well as one riparian and one endogean species. Complimentary data were collected for immersion tolerance and whole-animal permeability in air, and structural specialization of the respiratory pleopods was examined using SEM. Ligia occidentalis Dana, 1853 (marine, littoral) and Ligidium lapetum Mulaik & Mulaik, 1942 (riparian) showed similar VCO2 in air and water. VCO2 in air for the other species was significantly higher than in water. Compared across species, aerial VCO2 scaled with mass in accordance with Kleiber’s law (β = 0.774) while aquatic VCO2 increased in approximate proportion to mass (β = 0.957). At least some specimens of the six marine-littoral species survived over 24 h immersion. Ligidium lapetum and the endogean trichoniscid Brackenridgia heroldi (Arcangeli, 1932) also tolerated prolonged immersion in freshwater but did not survive beyond 5–6 h, probably due to limited capacity for hyper-regulation. The upper shore sand-burrowers, Tylos punctatus Holmes & Gay, 1909 and Alloniscus perconvexus Dana, 1856 had the lowest permeability among the study species and are the only representatives with elaborated pleopodal respiratory fields (Alloniscus) and lungs (Tylos). The ventral lung spiracles of T. punctatus are surrounded by an extensive cuticle meshwork and we propose that this functions as a plastron field to enhance aquatic gas exchange. Collectively, the results show that littoral species tolerate significant periods of immersion, allowing them to withstand habitat inundation during spring high tides, storm swells and, in riparian species, rainstorms and snowmelt.

Recent studies forecast that many ectothermic animals, especially aquatic stenotherms, may not be able to thrive or even survive predicted climate change. These projections, however, generally do not call much attention to the role of behavior, an essential thermoregulatory mechanism of many ectotherms. Here we characterize species-specific locomotor and respiratory responses to acute ambient warming in two highly stenothermic Antarctic Notothenioid fishes, one of which (Chaenocephalus aceratus) lacks hemoglobin and appears to be less tolerant to thermal stress as compared to the other (Notothenia coriiceps), which expresses hemoglobin. At the onset of ambient warming, both species perform distinct locomotor maneuvers that appear to include avoidance reactions. In response to unavoidable progressive hyperthermia, fishes demonstrate a range of species-specific maneuvers, all of which appear to provide some mitigation of the deleterious effects of obligatory thermoconformation and to compensate for increasing metabolic demand by enhancing the efficacy of branchial respiration. As temperature continues to rise, Chaenocephalus aceratus supplements these behaviors with intensive pectoral fin fanning which may facilitate cutaneous respiration through its scaleless integument, and Notothenia coriiceps manifests respiratory-locomotor coupling during repetitive startle-like maneuvers which may further augment gill ventilation. The latter behaviors, found only in Notothenia coriiceps, have highly stereotyped appearance resembling Fixed Action Pattern sequences. Altogether, this behavioral flexibility could contribute to the reduction of the detrimental effects of acute thermal stress within a limited thermal range. In an ecologically relevant setting, this may enable efficient thermoregulation of fishes by habitat selection, thus facilitating their resilience in persistent environmental change. According to the metabolic-level boundaries hypothesis, metabolic level mediates the relative influence of surface area or volume-related metabolic processes on metabolic scaling in organisms. Therefore, variation in both metabolic level and surface area may affect metabolic scaling. Goldfish were used to determine the influence of both a surgical reduction in respiratory surface area and food deprivation on metabolic scaling exponents (bR ). Gill excision did not change resting metabolic rate (RMR) or bR (a common value of 0.895). However, ventilation frequency (VF) increased from 21.6 times min-1 before gill excision to 52.8 times min-1 after gill excision. This suggests that the acceleration of breathing after gill excision offsets the constraints of the respiratory surface area on RMR and results in no influence of surface area reduction on metabolic scaling. In the food deprivation experiment, RMR decreased; however, bR (a common value of 0.872) did not increase. The VFs of the fish at weeks 1 and 2 were approximately 22% and 38% lower than that at Week 0, which may enhance exchange surface area limits and result in no increase in bR with a decreasing RMR induced by food deprivation. The results suggest that food deprivation reduces metabolic level, but does not alter metabolic scaling exponent owing to variation in VF.

How aquatic primary productivity influences the carbon (C) sequestering capacity of wetlands is uncertain. We evaluated the magnitude and variability in aquatic C dynamics and compared them to net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) and ecosystem respiration (Reco) rates within calcareous freshwater wetlands in Everglades National Park. We continuously recorded 30-min measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO), water level, water temperature (Twater), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). These measurements were coupled with ecosystem CO2 fluxes over 5 years (2012–2016) in a long-hydroperiod peat-rich, freshwater marsh and a short-hydroperiod, freshwater marl prairie. Daily net aquatic primary productivity (NAPP) rates indicated both wetlands were generally net heterotrophic. Gross aquatic primary productivity (GAPP) ranged from 0 to − 6.3 g C m−2 day−1 and aquatic respiration (RAq) from 0 to 6.13 g C m−2 day−1. Nonlinear interactions between water level, Twater, and GAPP and RAq resulted in high variability in NAPP that contributed to NEE. Net aquatic primary productivity accounted for 4–5% of the deviance explained in NEE rates. With respect to the flux magnitude, daily NAPP was a greater proportion of daily NEE at the long-hydroperiod site (mean = 95%) compared to the short-hydroperiod site (mean = 64%). Although we have confirmed the significant contribution of NAPP to NEE in both long- and short-hydroperiod freshwater wetlands, the decoupling of the aquatic and ecosystem fluxes could largely depend on emergent vegetation, the carbonate cycle, and the lateral C flux.

The Neotropical armoured catfish Corydoras paleatus is a facultative air-breathing teleost commonly exported as ornamental fish. In this species, air breathing enables it to survive and inhabit freshwater environments with low oxygen levels. Therefore, it is important to analyse the gills from a morphological aspect and its dimensions in relation to body mass with reference to aquatic respiration. For that, the gills were analysed using a stereoscopic microscope for morphometric studies, and structural and ultrastructural studies were carried out to compare the four branchial arches. Furthermore, two immunohistochemical techniques were used to locate and identify the presence of a Na+/K+ pump. The characterization of the potential for cell proliferation of this organ was assessed using an anti-PCNA antibody. The results show that gills of C. paleatus present some characteristics related to its diet and lifestyle, such as the limited development of gill rakers and the abundance of taste buds. In addition, other special features associated with the environment and bimodal breathing were observed: scarce and absent mucous cells (MCs) in the gill filaments and branchial lamellae, respectively, and the localization of mitochondria-rich cells (MRCs) covering the basal third of the branchial lamellae, which reduces the gill respiratory area. A peculiar finding in the gill epithelium of this armoured catfish was the presence of mononuclear cells with sarcomeres similar to myoid cells, whose functional importance should be determined in future studies. Finally, in C. paleatus, the interlamellar space of gill filaments is an important site for cell turnover and ionoregulation; the latter function is also performed by the branchial lamellae. Different erosion processes deliver large amounts of terrestrial soil organic carbon (SOC) to rivers. Mounting evidence indicates that a significant fraction of this SOC, which displays a wide range of ages, is rapidly decomposed after entering the river system. The mechanisms explaining this rapid decomposition of previously stable SOC still remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the relative importance of two mechanisms that possibly control SOC decomposition rates in aquatic systems: (i) in the river water SOC is exposed to the aquatic microbial community which is able to metabolize SOC much more quickly than the soil microbial community and (ii) SOC decomposition in rivers is facilitated due to the hydrodynamic disturbance of suspended sediment particles. We performed different series of short-term (168 h) incubations quantifying the rates of SOC decomposition in an aquatic system under controlled conditions. Organic carbon decomposition was measured continuously through monitoring dissolved O2 (DO) concentration using a fiber-optic sensor (FireStingO2, PyroScience). Under both shaking and standing conditions, we found a significant difference in decomposition rate between SOC with aquatic microbial organisms added (SOC + AMO) and without aquatic microbial organisms (SOC − AMO). The presence of an aquatic microbial community enhanced the SOC decomposition process by 70 %–128 % depending on the soil type and shaking–standing conditions. While some recent studies suggested that aquatic respiration rates may have been substantially underestimated by performing measurement under stationary conditions, our results indicate that the effect of hydrodynamic disturbance is relatively minor, under the temperature conditions, for the soil type, and for the suspended matter concentration range used in our experiments. We propose a simple conceptual model explaining these contrasting results.

Rice-fish co-culture has gained increasing attention to remediate the negative environmental impacts induced by intensive aquaculture. However, the effect of rice-fish co-culture on oxygen depletion has rarely been investigated. We constructed a rice-fish co-culture system in yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) and freshwater shrimp (Macrobrachium nipponense) ponds using a new high-stalk rice variety, and conducted a field experiment to investigate the effect of rice-fish co-culture on water parameters and oxygen consumption. The results showed that rice-fish co-culture reduced the nutrients (total nitrogen, ammonia-N, total phosphorous and potassium) and the dissolved oxygen content in fish and shrimp ponds. However, they showed similar seasonal change of dissolved oxygen in the water of fish and shrimp ponds. Rice-fish co-culture reduced the total amount of oxygen consumption and optimized the oxygen consumption structure in pond. The respiration rates in water and sediment were significantly reduced by 66.1% and 31.7% in the catfish pond, and 64.4% and 38.7% in the shrimp pond, respectively, by additional rice cultivation. Rice-fish co-culture decreased the proportions of respiration in sediment and water, and increased the proportion of fish respiration. These results suggest that rice-fish co-culture is an efficient way to reduce hypoxia in intensive culture pond. Rivers receive large amounts of terrestrial soil organic carbon (SOC) and transport them from land to the ocean. Mounting evidence indicates that a large fraction of the eroded SOC, which is often very old, is quickly decomposed upon entering the river and never reaches the ocean. The mechanisms explaining this rapid decomposition of previously stable SOC remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the relative importance of two mechanisms possibly explaining this rapid SOC decomposition: (i) in the river water SOC is exposed to a different microbial community which is able to metabolise SOC much more quickly than the soil microbial community and (ii) SOC decomposition in rivers is facilitated due to the hydrodynamic disturbance of sediment. We performed different series of short-term (168h) incubations quantifying the rates of SOC decomposition in an aquatic system under controlled conditions. Organic carbon decomposition was measured continuously through monitoring dissolved O2 concentration using a fiber-optic meter (FirestingO2, PyroScience). In the control treatment, bottles of 320 ml of river water sampled from Dijle river (Leuven, Belgium) were used, without headspace, under dark conditions in a temperature-controlled room (20℃). In a second treatment, soil material was added to river water filtered at 0.2 um to remove aquatic micro-organisms (MO) (SOC-MO treatment). The effect of the presence of an aquatic microbial community on SOC decomposition was simulated by adding an inoculum of unfiltered river water to a bottle containing the same soil material (SOC+MO treatment). Secondly, we investigated the effect of water motion on respiration rates by simulating the hydrodynamic disturbance of soil particles using a swing system to keep particles suspended in the water. All treatments described above were conducted under both standing- and shaking conditions. Each experiment was repeated six times and two types of soil were tested: one from arable land (sandy loam, 2.4%OC), and the other from a temperate forest site (sandy loam, 5.0%OC). Our result show that SOC indeed further mineralized in a riverine environment. Under both shaking and standing conditions, we found a significant difference between SOC-MO and SOC+MO treatments (paired t-tests, p0.05). While some recent studies suggested that aquatic respiration rates may have been substantially underestimated by performing measurement under stationary conditions, our results indicate that this effect is relatively minor, at least under the temperature conditions and for the suspended matter concentration range (500 mg/L arable land soil; 200 mg/L forest soil) used in our experiments.

A high-level of free CO 2 is a prevalent feature of intensive RAS and chronic exposure is common for most species during the production process. Currently, standard operating procedures, regulations and “safe” levels of CO 2 are based on values that do not necessarily represent a point at, up to which, production and fish performance are unaffected. The high solubility of CO 2 in water and the large input from fish respiration also means that current practices for the removal of CO 2 are often inadequate for the scale of production. High CO 2 levels can be addressed by the control of alkalinity, thereby creating a scenario where the majority of CO 2 exists as carbonate and bicarbonate. Any acute reduction in pH can shift the equilibrium towards a large and sudden conversion of inorganic carbon to free CO 2 , which can have a detrimental effect on fish. The current investigations aimed to determine the effects of both; acute increases in dissolved CO 2 on the physiological capacity of Atlantic salmon, as well the effects of chronic exposure to different CO 2 concentrations on production in freshwater. Results show that acute exposure (up to 40 mg L −1 ) significantly reduces aerobic capacity and the rate of recovery from stress. They also show that these effects are driven primarily by CO 2 exposure, and to a much lesser extent by the associated reduction in pH. Growth and feed conversion experiments during chronic exposure suggest that there is no CO 2 concentration where production performance is unaffected.

Bergmann's rule is the propensity for species-mean body size to decrease with increasing temperature. Temperature-dependent oxygen limitation has been hypothesized to help drive temperature-size relationships among ectotherms, including Bergmann's rule, where organisms reduce body size under warm oxygen-limited conditions, thereby maintaining aerobic scope. Temperature-dependent oxygen limitation should be most pronounced among aquatic ectotherms that cannot breathe aerially, as oxygen solubility in water decreases with increasing temperature. We use phylogenetically explicit analyses to show that species-mean adult size of aquatic salamanders with branchial or cutaneous oxygen uptake becomes small in warm environments and large in cool environments, whereas body size of aquatic species with lungs (i.e., that respire aerially), as well as size of semiaquatic and terrestrial species do not decrease with temperature. We argue that oxygen limitation drives the evolution of small size in warm aquatic environments for species with aquatic respiration. More broadly, the stronger decline in size with temperature observed in aquatic versus terrestrial salamander species mirrors the relatively strong plastic declines in size observed previously among aquatic versus terrestrial invertebrates, suggesting that temperature-dependent oxygen availability can help drive patterns of plasticity, micro- and macroevolution.

Diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory drug, is often detected in natural waters in the ng/L to μg/L range, posing a threat to aquatic organisms. The study focused on the effects of diclofenac in a gastropod mollusk Radix balthica. A 72-h exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of diclofenac caused deviations from the baseline activities of the studied enzymes in the digestive gland of snails. Acetylcholinesterase activity was induced by the end of exposure, with the most pronounced increase at 3 μg/L. Results on glutathione-S-transferase activity were nonuniform, and no significant variations were observed in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances concentrations, indicating that diclofenac did not cause oxidative stress in the digestive gland of R. balthica at 0.04–4 μg/L range. Diclofenac lowered the oxygen consumption rate in snails in a concentration-dependent manner. At concentrations ≥0.9 μg/L, animals attempted to switch aquatic respiration to breathing air to regulate their metabolic needs. The study showed that diclofenac at environmentally relevant concentrations affected the fitness of R. balthica.

Nearly all annual blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Karenia brevis (K. brevis) pose a serious threat to coastal Southwest Florida. These blooms discolor water, kill fish and marine mammals, contaminate shellfish, cause mild to severe respiratory irritation, and discourage tourism and recreational activities, leading to significant health and economic impacts in affected communities. Despite these issues, we still lack standard measures suitable for assessing bloom severity or for evaluating the efficacy of modeling efforts simulating bloom initiation and intensity. In this study, historical cell count observations along the southwest Florida shoreline from 1953 to 2019 were used to develop monthly and annual bloom severity indices (BSI). Similarly, respiratory irritation observations routinely reported in Sarasota and Manatee Counties from 2006 to 2019 were used to construct a respiratory irritation index (RI). Both BSI and RI consider spatial extent and temporal evolution of the bloom, and can be updated routinely and used as objective criteria to aid future socioeconomic and scientific studies of K. brevis. These indices can also be used to help managers and decision makers both evaluate the risks along the coast during events and design systems to better respond to and mitigate bloom impacts. Before 1995, sampling was done largely in response to reports of discolored water, fish kills, or respiratory irritation. During this timeframe, lack of sampling during the fall, when blooms typically occur, generally coincided with periods of more frequent-than-usual offshore winds. Consequently, some blooms may have been undetected or under-sampled. As a result, the BSIs before 1995 were likely underestimated and cannot be viewed as accurately as those after 1995. Anomalies in the frequency of onshore wind can also largely account for the discrepancies between BSI and RI during the period from 2006 to 2019. These findings highlighted the importance of onshore wind anomalies when predicting respiratory irritation impacts along beaches.

When water bodies with unique biogeochemical constituents mix together there is potential for diverse responses by aquatic microbial communities and associated ecosystem functions. Here we evaluate bulk respiration under varying mixtures of turbid Amazon River water and two lowland tributaries-the Tapajos and Xingu rivers-based on O-2 drawdown in dark rotating incubation chambers. Experiments containing 5, 17, 33, and 50% tributary water mixed with Amazon River water were performed for the Tapajos and Xingu rivers at three different rotation velocities (0, 0.22, and 0.66 m s(-1)) during the falling water period. Pseudo first order reaction coefficients (k'), a measure of respiration potential, ranged from -0.15 to -1.10 d(-1), corresponding to respiration rates from 1.0 to 8.1 mg O-2 L d(-1). k'-values consistently increased with the rate of chamber rotation, and also was generally higher in the tributary-mainstem mixtures compared to pure endmembers. For both the Tapajos and Xingu rivers, the 17% mixture of tributary water yielded maximal k'-values, which were up to 2.9 and 2.2 times greater than in the tributary endmembers, respectively. The 50% mixtures, on the other hand, did not result in large increases in k'. We hypothesize that enhanced respiration potential after mixing unique water is driven, in part, by microbial priming effects that have been previously identified on a molecular level for these rivers. The results of this study suggest that there may be an optimal mixture for priming effects to occur in terms of the relative abundance of "priming" and "primed" substrates.

Large changes in oxygen availability in aquatic environments, ranging from anoxia through to hyperoxia, can lead to corresponding wide variation in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by fish with aquatic respiration. In order to evaluate the effects of hypoxia and reoxygenation on oxidative stress in fish, the mRNA and protein expression of SODs (Cu/Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD) as well as indices (CP, LPO and MDA) and enzymatic activities (SOD, CAT, GPx, GR and GST) were analyzed in liver and brain tissues of Pelteobagrus vachelli. Predominant expression of PvSOD2 was detected in heart, brain, and liver. In contrast, PvSOD1 was highly expressed in liver. Based on the expression patterns of above parameters, we inferred that brain tissue of P. vachelli under 0.7 mg/L degree of acute hypoxia condition could experience hypometabolic states or no suffering stress, but brain tissue has effective mechanisms to minimize or prevent oxidative stress during the transition from hypoxia to reoxygenation. Our results also demonstrated an increased expression of SODs and enzymatic activities for oxidative stress in liver under hypoxic conditions, which supports the hypothesis that anticipatory preparation takes place in order to deal with the encountered oxidative stress during the recovery from hypoxia as proposed by M. Hermes-Lima. Therefore, this study will provide a clue to better understand the action mode of antioxidant genes and enzymes under oxidative stress in fish.

The culture of Seriola species is well established in Japan and is an emerging industry in many other temperate regions around the world. Despite many studies on the growth, physiology and nutritional requirements of yellowtail kingfish, the complex interactions between nutrition and environmental impacts are still being investigated. Here, we present a theoretical bioenergetic model for yellowtail kingfish bringing together the current knowledge of this species growth, metabolism and other aspects of its physiology. We solve the energy budget of yellowtail kingfish using existing theoretical equations to represent all energy gains and all metabolic costs and parameterising them with published data obtained when rearing yellowtail kingfish. Our model predicts growth as a function of suitable temperatures for yellowtail kingfish (18–27 °C) and estimates the rate of feed ingestion as well as the effect of diet on feed conversion ratio (FCR). Our model can be used to estimate energy and protein retention, nutrients loads into the ecosystem, and how these outputs change through diet manipulation at specified weight classes. We demonstrate how to use our model to predict improvements to FCR and include a simulation example showing results from shifting from a high protein-low fat diet for juveniles (0 to 500 g) to a low protein-high fat diet for adult fish (500–1000 g). Excretion of dissolved nitrogen and the consumption of oxygen through fish respiration are highest at the optimum temperature for growth. When fed a diet of 45% protein and 20% fat, our simulation shows that a constant biomass of 1000 kg of fish at a constant optimum temperature of 22.8 °C, excretes 153.1 kg of nitrogen year -1. For the same diet composition and temperature, oxygen consumption decreases from 19.9 to 10.2 kg day−1 for 1000 kg of fish weighing 50 g and 1.5 kg, respectively. Our model is useful to investigate complex interactions of metabolism for the culture of yellowtail kingfish in a commercial setting and allows predictions for changes that could improve production.

Waterbodies of India support a wide range of molluscs including Lamellidens marginalis, a pearl forming edible mussel of ecological significance. Report of copper oxide nanoparticle toxicity in Indian molluscs is limited in scientific literature. L. marginalis is a gill respiring filter feeder, which is toxicologically vulnerable to exposure of copper oxide nanoparticles liberated from electrical, textile and polymer industries. Experimental exposure of copper oxide nanoparticles for 7 days yielded a decrease in gill filtration rate, respiration rate, total count and phagocytic response of hemocytes, the chief immunoeffector cells of L. marginalis. Nanoparticle exposure resulted in decrease of phagocytic response of mussel hemocytes. Decrease in nitric oxide generation and phenoloxidase activity were recorded in L. marginalis exposed to 0.5, 1 and 5 mg copper oxide nanoparticles per litre of water for 7 and 14 days. Superoxide anion generation in hemocytes was increased under the exposure of copper oxide nanoparticles. Increase in superoxide anion and decrease in the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase were indicative to oxidative stress in mussels. Copper oxide nanoparticle induced shift in filtration and respiration rate along with the hemocyte associated immune parameters were suggestive to an acute immunophysiological stress in L. marginalis. We estimated the functional performance of gill and physiological status of aquatic respiration in L. marginalis exposed to copper oxide nanoparticles. A parallel set of estimation of each parameter was carried out in L. marginalis exposed to identical copper sulphate concentrations to record and compare the ionic toxicity of copper in the same specimen.

A mathematical model is framed for a goldfish recirculating aquaculture system based on unsteady-state mass balance for prediction of the concentration of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrite-nitrogen (NO2-N), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), dissolved oxygen (DO) and total suspended solids (TSS). The goldfish were stocked at 100 numbers per m3 of rearing water volume of 5 m3 tank capacity in the years 2009 and 2010 and the model was calibrated and validated. The recirculation flow rate was fixed at 29,000 L/day. The model parameters were estimated as kTAN (mg of TAN generated per kg of feed): 20,000, M (mortality rate): 0.002 day−1, α (percentage of feed conversion to suspended solids): 23.8, koxy (mg of oxygen required for fish respiration per kg of feed applied in unit time): 300,000, kb (partial nitrification in the culture tank): 0.86 and the reaction rate constants, k1 and k2: 84.65 day−1 and 42.03 day−1 respectively and temperature growth coefficient (TGC): 5.00 × 10-5. The model efficacy was adjudged by estimation of the coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), Nash-Sutcliffe modelling efficiency (ENS) and graphical plots between predicted and observed values.

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) is a key tracer for detecting the mobilization of previously stored terrestrial organic carbon (C) into aquatic systems. Old C (>1,000 years BP) may be “masked” by postbomb C (fixed from the atmosphere post-1950 CE), potentially rendering bulk aquatic dissolved organic C (DOC) 14 C measurements insensitive to old C. We collected DOC with a modern 14 C signature from a temperate Scottish peatland stream and decomposed it to produce CO 2 under simulated natural conditions over 140 days. We measured the 14 C of both DOC and CO 2 at seven time points and found that while DOC remained close to modern in age, the resultant CO 2 progressively increased in age up to 2,356 ± 767 years BP. The results of this experiment demonstrate that the bulk DO 14 C pool can hide the presence of old C within peatland stream DOC export, demonstrating that bulk DO 14 C measurements can be an insensitive indicator of peatland disturbance. Our experiment also demonstrates that this old C component is biologically and photochemically available for conversion to the greenhouse gas CO 2 , and as such, bulk DO 14 C measurements do not reflect the 14 C signature of the labile organic C pool exported by inland water systems more broadly. Moreover, our experiment suggests that old C may be an important component of CO 2 emissions to the atmosphere from peatland aquatic systems, with implications for tracing and modeling interactions between the hydrological and terrestrial C cycles.

Abalone (Haliotis spp.) are commercially important marine shellfish species worldwide. Knowledge about the physiology of abalone that impacts life-history traits is important for a better understanding of the biology of the species and the impact of stressful husbandry procedures at different seasons. The present study quantified the seasonal and diurnal variations in four physiological parameters of the European species Haliotis tuberculata, i.e. carbon aerial and aquatic respiration, calcification and excretion rates, and the effect of prolonged aerial exposure upon abalone aerial respiration. We also investigated the effect of individual size upon these physiological parameters. Aquatic respiration and calcification rates showed an allometric relationship with biomass. All parameters showed lower rates in cool season and higher rates in warmer season. Temperature was assumed to be the primary driver of the reported seasonal variability in physiological parameters, although reproductive needs and nutrition may also contribute to the observed patterns. Importantly, abalone did not stop calcifying in winter, and calcified more at night than during the day. Abalone did not respire more underwater at night-time than at daytime, however they excreted more overnight. The low air:aquatic ratio (0.2) is likely to be an energy-saving strategy for emerged H. tuberculata individuals. This study highlights the temporal heterogeneity in physiological rates of H. tuberculata, which constitutes a species recently domesticated in Europe.

Predicting ecological responses to climate change requires an understanding of the mechanisms that influence species' tolerances to temperature. Based on the idea that air and water breathing animals are differentially suited to life in either medium due to differences in their respiratory morphology, we examined the possibility that the thermal tolerances of co-existing intertidal pulmonate and patellogastropod limpets may differ in different breathing media. We tested this by determining each species' median lethal temperature (LT50) and cardiac Arrhenius breakpoint temperature (ABT) as measures of upper thermal tolerance limits, in air and water. Although all these species can survive in air and water, we hypothesised that the pulmonate limpets, Siphonaria capensis and S. serrata, would have higher thermal limits than the patellogastropod limpets, Cellana capensis and Scutellastra granularis, in air and vice versa in water. The results did not support our hypotheses, since C. capensis had similar thermal tolerance limits to the pulmonate limpets in air and the pulmonate limpets had thermal tolerance limits similar to or higher than S. granularis in water. Thus, considering pulmonate and patellid limpets as groups, we found no differences in their collective upper thermal tolerance limits in either medium. We conclude that differences between these two limpet groups in their respiratory morphology do not influence thermal tolerance, but that tolerances are species-specific.

To address how various environmental parameters control or constrain planktonic respiration (PR), we used geometric scaling relationships and established biological scaling laws to derive quantitative predictions for the relationships among key drivers of PR. We then used empirical measurements of PR and environmental (soluble reactive phosphate [SRP], carbon [DOC], chlorophyll a [Chl-a)], and temperature) and landscape parameters (lake area [LA] and watershed area [WA]) from a set of 44 lakes that varied in size and trophic status to test our hypotheses. We found that landscape-level processes affected PR through direct effects on DOC and temperature and indirectly via SRP. This study investigated the hypothesis that in the Asian swamp eel Monopterus albus, an air-breathing fish from south-east Asia that uses the buccopharyngeal cavity for oxygen uptake, the upper critical temperature (TU) is increased by acclimation to higher temperature, and that the increased TU is associated with improved cardiovascular and respiratory function. Monopterus albus were therefore acclimated to 27° C (current average) and 32° C (current maximum temperature as well as projected average within 100-200 years), and both the effect of acclimation and acute temperature increments on cardiovascular and respiratory functions were investigated. Two weeks of heat acclimation increased upper tolerated temperature (TU ) by 2° C from 36·9 ± 0·1° C to 38·9 ± 0·1° C (mean ± s.e.). Oxygen uptake (M˙O2) increased with acclimation temperature, accommodated by increases in both aerial and aquatic respiration. Overall, M˙O2 from air (M˙O2a ) was predominant, representing 85% in 27° C acclimated fish and 80% in 32° C acclimated fish. M˙O2 increased with acute increments in temperature and this increase was entirely accommodated by an increase in air-breathing frequency and M˙O2a . Monopterus albus failed to upregulate stroke volume; rather, cardiac output was maintained through increased heart rate with rising temperature. Overall, acclimation of M. albus to 32° C did not improve its cardiovascular and respiratory performance at higher temperatures, and cardiovascular adaptations, therefore, do not appear to contribute to the observed increase in TU.

Ponds of various dimensions are often stocked with a variety of fish and some aquatic plants for aesthetic and recreation purpose. It is crucial to ensure that the water quality fulfils the criteria of National Water Quality Standard IIB, appropriate for recreational usage. A small fish pond located within Sunway University appears to have poor water quality. To evaluate the dynamics of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the pond, samplings of DO levels at hourly intervals at four locations and two depths over a period of 24 hours are conducted for several days. The pond has low DO of less than 1.5 mg/L throughout the 24-hour sampling period. This is far below the required level of 5.0 mg/L stipulated for Standard IIB. Fish respiration and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) generation rates are estimated from laboratory experiments and literature review. These rate constants are then used to calibrate an in-house numerical water quality simulation model known as E2Algae to simulate DO dynamics subject to fish respiration, fish feed residuals, fish excretion and algae photosynthesis. The study concludes that fish stocking density must not exceed 0.25 kg/m3 and fish feeding rate must not exceed 2% total fish wet weight per day to maintain adequate DO level without the use of aerators. This simulation study also concludes that intensive aquaculture farms that utilize mechanical aerators operating at the rate of one horse power (HP) per 500 kg can potentially improve its energy efficiency to achieve one HP per 2000 kg fish by innovative design of aerator systems.

Agricultural crops play an important role in the global carbon and water cycle. Global climate change scenarios predict enhanced water scarcity and altered precipitation pattern in many parts of the world. Hence, a mechanistic understanding of water fluxes, productivity and water use efficiency of cultivated crops is of major importance, i.e. to adapt management practices. We compared water and carbon fluxes of paddy and rainfed rice by canopy scale gas exchange measurements, crop growth, daily evapotranspiration, transpiration and carbon flux modeling. Throughout a monsoon rice growing season, soil evaporation in paddy rice contributed strongly to evapotranspiration (96.6% to 43.3% from initial growth to fully developed canopy and amounted to 57.9% of total water losses over the growing seasons. Evaporation of rainfed rice was significantly lower (by 65% on average) particularly before canopy closure. Water use efficiency (WUE) was significantly higher in rainfed rice both from an agronomic (WUEagro, i.e. grain yield per evapotranspiration) and ecosystem (WUEeco, i.e. gross primary production per evapotranspiration) perspective. However, our results also show that higher WUE in rainfed rice comes at the expense of higher respiration losses compared to paddy rice (26% higher on average). Hence, suggestions on water management depend on the regional water availability (i.e. Mediterranean vs. Monsoon climate) and the balance between higher respiratory losses versus a potential reduction in CH4 and other greenhouse gas emissions. Our results suggest that a shift from rainfed/unsaturated soil to waterlogged paddy conditions after closure of the rice canopy might be a good compromise towards a sustainable use of water while preserving grain yield, particularly for water-limited production areas.
