Estimates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release by marine macrophyte communities (seagrass meadows and macroalgal beds) were obtained experimentally using in situ benthic chambers. The effect of light availability on DOC release by macrophyte communities was examined in two communities both by comparing net DOC release under light and dark, and by examining the response of net DOC release to longerterm (days) experimental shading of the communities. All most 85% of the seagrass communities and almost all of macroalgal communities examined acted as net sources of DOC. There was a weak tendency for higher DOC fluxes under light than under dark conditions in seagrass meadow. There is no relationship between net DOC fluxes and gross primary production (GPP) and net community production (NCP), however, this relationship is positive between net DOC fluxes and community respiration. Net DOC fluxes were not affected by shading of a T. testudinum community in Florida for 5 days, however, shading of a mixed seagrass meadow in the Philippines led to a significant reduction on the net DOC release when shading was maintained for 6 days compared to only 2 days of shading. Based on published and unpublished results we also estimate the global net DOC production by marine macrophytes. The estimated global net DOC flux, and hence export, from marine macrophyte is about 0.197±0.015 PgCyr-1 or 0.212±0.016 PgCyr-1 depending if net DOC flux by seagrass meadows was estimated by taking into account the low or high global seagrass area, respectively. Population reconstruction techniques was used to assess for the first time the population dynamics of a seagrass, Cymodocea nodosa, exposed to long-term elevated CO 2 near three volcanic seeps and compared them with reference sites away from the seeps. Under high CO 2 , the density of shoots and of individuals (apical shoots), and the vertical and horizontal elongation and production rates, were higher than at the reference sites. Nitrogen limitation effects on rhizome elongation and production rates and on biomass were more evident than CO 2 as these were highest at the location where the limitation of nitrogen was highest. At the seep where the availability of CO 2 was highest and nitrogen lowest, density of shoots and individuals were highest, probably due to CO 2 effects on shoot differentiation and induced reproductive output, respectively. At the three seeps, there was higher short- and long-term shoot recruitment than at the reference sites, and growth rates was around zero, indicating that elevated CO 2 increases the turnover of C. nodosa shoots., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: Acute non-traumatic bone marrow edema (BME) in the knee is a common clinical problem. The aim of the present study is to present the MR imaging findings of the uncommon transient migratory pattern of this syndrome., Materials and Methods: Twenty-two patients (21 men, 1 woman, age range 35-73 years, mean 49.4+/-7.6) who presented with pain in the knee joint (ranging from 2 weeks to 6 months) and BME in the MR imaging examination, were included in the study. In all cases, the knee joint BME was either preceded or followed by another site of BME in the same or another joint. All patients were studied with plain X-rays and MR imaging at presentation and with MR imaging after resolution of symptoms., Results: The eight patients with initial involvement in the knee showed migration either intra-articularly (5), or/and in the contralateral knee (2) and only 1 case showed migration to the ipsilateral hip joint. In two patients the BME shifted from the hip first to the foot and then to the knee. The median migration period was 4 months for the second involvement in all patients and 3 months for the third involvement (10 patients)., Conclusions: The present study reports the largest series of patients with regional migratory osteoporosis involving the knee. In most of the cases, shifting of BME remains in the joint or moves to the contralateral knee. In only one case the BME shifted from the knee elsewhere. All lesions were transient.

Sports injuries may be unique in childhood and adolescence due to the inherent weakness of the growing skeleton at specific sites, mainly the cartilaginous parts. Many injuries are predictable based on the known mechanism of injury encountered in certain sports. There are two distinct patterns of injury in sports; acute, and chronic or overuse. Imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis and management of these entities. Radiologists should be familiar with the advantages and limitations of the various imaging modalities when evaluating the injured young athlete. The present review focuses on the radiological findings and appropriate imaging approach in injuries that are typically or most commonly encountered in the skeletally immature athletes.

Thirty-two lactating Karagouniko ewes were allocated at random to four groups for 6 weeks, to examine the effect of four diets: C (control treatment, ration without algae); LA (ration with low level of algae); MA (ration with medium level of algae) and HA (ration with high level of algae); containing 0, 23.5, 47 and 94 g algae, respectively, on the enrichment of milk and dairy products. Addition of algae reduced (P < 0.001) DM intake for treatments MA and HA. Milk yield did not differ between treatments but milk composition was significantly affected by dietary inclusion of algae. Milk fat content was significantly increased (P < 0.001) for treatment HA whereas milk protein content was significantly increased (P < 0.001) for all treatments containing algae. Milk from treatments LA, MA and HA was significantly enriched in the following PUFA: C20:5 (n-3) (0.4-2.1%), C22:5 (n-6) (0.8-4.1%), C22:6 (n-3) (4.3-12.4%) (P < 0.001) and C22:5 (n-3) (2.1-3.1%) (P < 0.05), which were not detected in control milk. Feta cheese and yogurts produced from the enriched milk had identical composition with the milk, and would be characterized as healthy foods. The ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids was 2.5-4.5.

Objective: This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of mesenteric panniculitis on CT and to describe its appearance and associated diseases., Subjects and Methods: A total of 7620 consecutive abdominal CT examinations were prospectively evaluated for features common to mesenteric panniculitis such as a well-delineated inhomogeneous hyperattenuated fatty mass at the mesenteric root, envelopment of mesenteric vessels, and no evidence of invasion of the adjacent small-bowel loops that may be displaced., Results: CT findings of mesenteric panniculitis were seen in 49 patients (0.6%). We found a female predominance. Mesenteric panniculitis coexisted with malignancy in 34 patients and with benign disorders in 11 patients. In the remaining four patients, mesenteric panniculitis, verified on histology, was considered to be responsible for the patients' clinical manifestations; no other abnormality was identified. Soft-tissue nodules (n = 39) and a fatty halo surrounding vessels and nodules (n = 42) were observed in most patients. Follow-up abdominal CT examinations in 29 of the 49 patients showed changes in only one patient., Conclusion: CT findings of mesenteric panniculitis may be seen in patients undergoing abdominal CT for various symptoms.

Psoas abscess in children, and especially in neonates, is an uncommon condition which is difficult to diagnose clinically. The US, CT and MR findings of a psoas abscess in a neonate, which extended to the thigh, are reported. Imaging was helpful in revealing the abnormality, in demonstrating its extension and in determining its nature. The child was treated conservatively and the abscess resolved, leaving atrophy of the psoas muscle.

In a digestibility experiment, six adult wethers of the Karagouniko breed were used to determine the nutritive value of dried citrus pulp. The rations consisted of 800 g of hay and 75, 150, 225, 300, 375, and 450 g of citrus pulp. The apparent digestibilities of the DM, OM, CP, ether extract, crude fiber, and N-free extract for dried citrus pulp were 78.6, 87.2, 52.7, 82.0, 93.2, and 83.1%, respectively. Energy content was estimated to be 1.66 Mcal of NE(L)/kg of DM. In a second experiment, 26 lactating ewes of the Karagouniko breed were used to study the nutrient utilization of dried citrus pulp for milk yield when citrus pulp was used as a replacement for cereal grains. The ewes were divided into two groups immediately postweaning and fed daily 700 g of alfalfa hay, 300 g of wheat straw, and 580 or 550 g of concentrates with or without 30% citrus pulp, respectively. The inclusion of citrus pulp in rations for ewes had no significant effect on milk yield and composition but decreased the C4 to C10 fatty acids. Citrus pulp is a valuable, high energy by-product that can partly replace cereal grains in sheep rations without adverse effect on milk yield or composition.

Methionine sulfoximine (MSO) is a centrally acting neurotoxin which inhibits the glutamate metabolism enzymes and has convulsive properties. Administration of a small dose of MSO to rabbits, either intravenously or intracerebroventricularly, except for the already known convulsive effects, may also be responsible for hind leg myopathy (rigid paralysis with histological findings resembling myositis) which sets in by the 4th day after MSO administration.
