Abstract: Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above $0.6\,$EeV., Comment: Minor modifications, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Abstract: The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive instrument to detect photons with energies above $10^{17}$ eV. It measures extensive air showers generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid technique that exploits the combination of a fluorescence detector with a ground array of particle detectors. The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth of the shower maximum ($X_{max}$) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced cascades. In this work, a new analysis technique in the energy interval between 1 and 30 EeV (1 EeV = $10^{18}$ eV) has been developed by combining the fluorescence detector-based measurement of $X_{max}$ with the specific features of the surface detector signal through a parameter related to the air shower muon content, derived from the universality of the air shower development. No evidence of a statistically significant signal due to photon primaries was found using data collected in about 12 years of operation. Thus, upper bounds to the integral photon flux have been set using a detailed calculation of the detector exposure, in combination with a data-driven background estimation. The derived 95% confidence level upper limits are 0.0403, 0.01113, 0.0035, 0.0023, and 0.0021 km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ above 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 EeV, respectively, leading to the most stringent upper limits on the photon flux in the EeV range. Compared with past results, the upper limits were improved by about 40% for the lowest energy threshold and by a factor 3 above 3 EeV, where no candidates were found and the expected background is negligible. The presented limits can be used to probe the assumptions on chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and allow for the constraint of the mass and lifetime phase space of super-heavy dark matter particles., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

Abstract: We report an investigation of the mass composition of cosmic rays with energies from 3 to 100 EeV (1 EeV=$10^{18}$ eV) using the distributions of the depth of shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$. The analysis relies on ${\sim}50,000$ events recorded by the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory and a deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithm. Above energies of 5 EeV, the data set offers a 10-fold increase in statistics with respect to fluorescence measurements at the Observatory. After cross-calibration using the Fluorescence Detector, this enables the first measurement of the evolution of the mean and the standard deviation of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to 100 EeV. Our findings are threefold: (1.) The evolution of the mean logarithmic mass towards a heavier composition with increasing energy can be confirmed and is extended to 100 EeV. (2.) The evolution of the fluctuations of $X_\mathrm{max}$ towards a heavier and purer composition with increasing energy can be confirmed with high statistics. We report a rather heavy composition and small fluctuations in $X_\mathrm{max}$ at the highest energies. (3.) We find indications for a characteristic structure beyond a constant change in the mean logarithmic mass, featuring three breaks that are observed in proximity to the ankle, instep, and suppression features in the energy spectrum., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract: We present measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$, inferred for the first time on an event-by-event level using the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using deep learning, we were able to extend measurements of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to energies of 100 EeV ($10^{20}$ eV), not yet revealed by current measurements, providing new insights into the mass composition of cosmic rays at extreme energies. Gaining a 10-fold increase in statistics compared to the Fluorescence Detector data, we find evidence that the rate of change of the average $X_\mathrm{max}$ with the logarithm of energy features three breaks at $6.5\pm0.6~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, $11\pm 2~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, and $31\pm5~(\mathrm{stat})\pm3~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, in the vicinity to the three prominent features (ankle, instep, suppression) of the cosmic-ray flux. The energy evolution of the mean and standard deviation of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions indicates that the mass composition becomes increasingly heavier and purer, thus being incompatible with a large fraction of light nuclei between 50 EeV and 100 EeV., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract: The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. An additional cosmic-ray population with higher source density and softer spectra, presumably also extragalactic and dominating the cosmic-ray flux at EeV energies, is also required to reproduce the overall spectrum and composition results for all energies down to 0.6~EeV., Comment: Matches published version

Abstract: We test the predictions of hadronic interaction models regarding the depth of maximum of air-shower profiles, $X_{max}$, and ground-particle signals in water-Cherenkov detectors at 1000 m from the shower core, $S(1000)$, using the data from the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The test consists in fitting the measured two-dimensional ($S(1000)$, $X_{max}$) distributions using templates for simulated air showers produced with hadronic interaction models EPOS-LHC, QGSJet II-04, Sibyll 2.3d and leaving the scales of predicted $X_{max}$ and the signals from hadronic component at ground as free fit parameters. The method relies on the assumption that the mass composition remains the same at all zenith angles, while the longitudinal shower development and attenuation of ground signal depend on the mass composition in a correlated way. The analysis was applied to 2239 events detected by both the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory with energies between $10^{18.5}$ to $10^{19.0}$ eV and zenith angles below $60^\circ$. We found, that within the assumptions of the method, the best description of the data is achieved if the predictions of the hadronic interaction models are shifted to deeper $X_{max}$ values and larger hadronic signals at all zenith angles. Given the magnitude of the shifts and the data sample size, the statistical significance of the improvement of data description using the modifications considered in the paper is larger than $5\sigma$ even for any linear combination of experimental systematic uncertainties., Comment: Published version

Abstract: Dark matter particles could be superheavy, provided their lifetime is much longer than the age of the universe. Using the sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory to ultra-high energy neutrinos and photons, we constrain a specific extension of the Standard Model of particle physics that meets the lifetime requirement for a superheavy particle by coupling it to a sector of ultra-light sterile neutrinos. Our results show that, for a typical dark coupling constant of 0.1, the mixing angle $\theta_m$ between active and sterile neutrinos must satisfy, roughly, $\theta_m \lesssim 1.5\times 10^{-6}(M_X/10^9~\mathrm{GeV})^{-2}$ for a mass $M_X$ of the dark-matter particle between $10^8$ and $10^{11}~$GeV., Comment: Version accepted for publication in PRD Letters, including Supplemental Material

Abstract: The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA), part of the Pierre Auger Observatory, is currently the largest array of radio antenna stations deployed for the detection of cosmic rays, spanning an area of $17$ km$^2$ with 153 radio stations. It detects the radio emission of extensive air showers produced by cosmic rays in the $30-80$ MHz band. Here, we report the AERA measurements of the depth of the shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$), a probe for mass composition, at cosmic-ray energies between $10^{17.5}$ to $10^{18.8}$ eV, which show agreement with earlier measurements with the fluorescence technique at the Pierre Auger Observatory. We show advancements in the method for radio $X_\text{max}$ reconstruction by comparison to dedicated sets of CORSIKA/CoREAS air-shower simulations, including steps of reconstruction-bias identification and correction, which is of particular importance for irregular or sparse radio arrays. Using the largest set of radio air-shower measurements to date, we show the radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy, reaching a resolution better than $15$ g cm$^{-2}$ at the highest energies, demonstrating that radio $X_\text{max}$ measurements are competitive with the established high-precision fluorescence technique. In addition, we developed a procedure for performing an extensive data-driven study of systematic uncertainties, including the effects of acceptance bias, reconstruction bias, and the investigation of possible residual biases. Abstract: We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence data set, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution $X_\text{max}$ measurements with even a sparse radio array. Abstract: The wind mission Aeolus of the European Space Agency was a groundbreaking achievement for Earth observation. Between 2018 and 2023, the space-borne lidar instrument ALADIN onboard the Aeolus satellite measured atmospheric wind profiles with global coverage which contributed to improving the accuracy of numerical weather prediction. The precision of the wind observations, however, declined over the course of the mission due to a progressive loss of the atmospheric backscatter signal. The analysis of the root cause was supported by the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina whose fluorescence detector registered the ultraviolet laser pulses emitted from the instrument in space, thereby offering an estimation of the laser energy at the exit of the instrument for several days in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The reconstruction of the laser beam not only allowed for an independent assessment of the Aeolus performance, but also helped to improve the accuracy in the determination of the laser beam's ground track on single pulse level. Abstract: The Pierre Auger Collaboration has embraced the concept of open access to their research data since its foundation, with the aim of giving access to the widest possible community. A gradual process of release began as early as 2007 when 1% of the cosmic-ray data was made public, along with 100% of the space-weather information. In February 2021, a portal was released containing 10% of cosmic-ray data collected from 2004 to 2018, during Phase I of the Observatory. The Portal included detailed documentation about the detection and reconstruction procedures, analysis codes that can be easily used and modified and, additionally, visualization tools. Since then the Portal has been updated and extended. In 2023, a catalog of the 100 highest-energy cosmic-ray events examined in depth has been included. A specific section dedicated to educational use has been developed with the expectation that these data will be explored by a wide and diverse community including professional and citizen-scientists, and used for educational and outreach initiatives. Abstract: Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra–high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 yr of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above 4 EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in R.A. above 8 EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the 8–16 EeV energy bin is now also above the 5 σ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above 8 EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of 0.3% yr−1 at the 95% confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to 0.03 EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above 0.6 EeV. 14. Carriage of HFE mutations and outcome of surgical resection for hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic patients

Abstract: Aggressive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) complicates frequently hereditary hemochromatosis, a disease for which a strong candidate gene, named HFE, has recently been identified. Patients with HCC who are heterozygotes for mutations in the HFE gene might have distinct features and a distinct disease course.The presence of the 2 mutations associated with hereditary hemochromatosis (C282Y and H63D) was sought by restriction fragment length polymorphism in 61 cirrhotic patients (46 males and 15 females) who underwent resection for HCC at a single institution.There were 4 heterozygotes for the C282Y mutation and 6 homozygotes + 20 heterozygotes for the H63D mutation, with no compound heterozygotes. Carriage of/= 1 HFE mutated allele was significantly more frequent in HCC patients than in 149 control subjects (44% vs. 29%, P = 0.005). Among C282Y heterozygotes, 3 of 4 were female, compared with 12 of 57 wild-type carriers (P = 0.015); no gender distribution existed among patients carrying H63D alleles (6 of 26 vs. 9 of 35, P = 0.813). Survival was longer for patients with wild-type HFE than for those with mutated HFE (67% vs. 22% at 3 years; hazard ratio = 0.42, 95% confidence interval = 0.21-0.80) (P0.01). The negative effect on survival that resulted from possessing/= 1 HFE mutated allele was maintained even after adjustment for gender, age, presence of tumor capsule, presence of comorbid factors, Okuda stage, Edmonson grading, and number of lesions (P = 0.01).Testing for HFE mutations may help identify HCC patients with dismal prognoses for whom surgical resection may not represent the best treatment option.

Abstract: This work aims to assess the use of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals as a means of biometric authentication. More than 240 recordings, each lasting 2 min, were gathered from 20 subjects involved in the data collection. Data include the results of experiments performed both in a resting state and in the presence of auditory stimuli. The resting-state EEG signals were acquired with both open and closed eyes. The auditory stimuli EEG signals consist of six experiments divided into two scenarios. The first scenario considers in-ear stimuli, while the second scenario considers bone-conducting stimuli. For each of the two scenarios, experiments include a native language song, a non-native language song and some neutral music. This data could be used to develop biometric systems for authentication or identification. Additionally, they could be used to study the effect of auditory stimuli such as music on EEG activity and to compare it with the resting state condition., (© 2024 The Authors.)

Abstract: We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum (X_{max}) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence dataset, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio X_{max} resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution X_{max} measurements with even a sparse radio array. With this, we show that the radio technique is capable of cosmic-ray mass composition studies, both at Auger and at other experiments.

Recently, hybrid Deep Learning (hDL), which combines different DL algorithms, has gained momentum over the past five years. In this work, we proposed a review on hDL-based BCI starting from the seminal studies in 2015., Objectives: We have reviewed 47 papers that apply hDL to the BCI system published between 2015 and 2020 extracting trends and highlighting relevant aspects to the topic., Methods: We have queried four scientific search engines (Google Scholar, PubMed, IEEE Xplore and Elsevier Science Direct) and different data items were extracted from each paper such as the database used, kind of application, online/offline training, tasks used for the BCI, pre-processing methodology adopted, type of normalization used, which kind of features were extracted, type of DL architecture used, number of layers implemented and which optimization approach were used as well. All these items were then investigated one by one to uncover trends., Results: Our investigation reveals that Electroencephalography (EEG) has been the most used technique. Interestingly, despite the lower Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the EEG data that makes pre-processing of that data mandatory, we have found that the pre-processing has only been used in 21.28% of the cases by showing that hDL seems to be able to overcome this intrinsic drawback of the EEG data. Temporal-features seem to be the most effective with 93.94% accuracy, while spatial-temporal features are the most used with 33.33% of the cases investigated. The most used architecture has been Convolutional Neural Network-Recurrent Neural Network CNN-RNN with 47% of the cases. Moreover, half of the studies have used a low number of layers to achieve a good compromise between the complexity of the network and computational efficiency., Significance: To give useful information to the scientific community, we make our summary table of hDL-based BCI papers available and invite the community to published work to contribute to it directly. We have indicated a list of open challenges, emphasizing the need to use neuroimaging techniques other than EEG, such as functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), deeper investigate the advantages and disadvantages of using pre-processing and the relationship with the accuracy obtained. To implement new combinations of architectures, such as RNN-based and Deep Belief Network DBN-based, it is necessary to better explore the frequency and temporal-frequency features of the data at hand.

Abstract: To verify prospectively the usefulness of the furosemide-induced natriuresis test in predicting ascites control by medical treatment, 15 stable cirrhotics (9 male) with ascites were studied. Sodium excretion was measured after this test and after volume expansion with saline associated with intravenous infusion of octreotide; 6 months later, response to medical treatment was rated as good (N=9) or poor (N=6). Patients with poor ascites control had lower sodium excretion with the furosemide-induced natriuresis test (median, 88 vs 201 mmol; P < 0.01). Poor control was observed in four of four patients with sodium excretion < or =125 mmol, and good control in six of six patients with sodium excretion >175 mmol (P < 0.002). Volume expansion was followed by limited natriuresis (median, 20 mmol), in inverse relationship with plasma active renin concentration (P < 0.001). In conclusion, long-term ascites control is well predicted by the furosemide-induced natriuresis test.

Abstract: Background: Subjects who carry the D allele of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene have higher plasma and tissue angiotensin II levels, possibly concurrent with the development of obesity. In transplant recipients, treatment with calcineurin antagonists would magnify these effects. The present study verifies whether the allelic variants of ACE are a factor involved in excess weight gain after liver transplantation., Methods: A consecutive series of 108 liver transplant recipients (73 males) were studied. Recipient ACE genotypes, determined by a polymerase chain reaction-based method, were related to body mass changes 1 year after transplant., Results: Body mass index (BMI) increased from the pretransplant value of 25.1+/-3.3 kg/m2 to 25.9+/-3.5 kg/m2 (P<0.005). The difference was mainly attributable to recipients carrying 1 D allele or more (N=88) in whom the BMI increased from 25.3+/-3.1 kg/m2 to 26.3+/-3.3 kg/m2 (P<0.005). A BMI of 25 kg/m or greater was measured in 30 of 45 deletion/deletion homozygotes and 25 of 43 insertion/deletion heterozygotes; in contrast, 14 of 20 insertion/insertion homozygotes had a normal body mass (P<0.01). Among patients with normal body mass pretransplant (N=56), none of 13 insertion/insertion homozygotes reached a BMI value 25 kg/m or greater posttransplant (P<0.005). At multivariate analysis, pretransplant body mass and carriage of 1 D allele or more were independent predictors of body mass gain greater than 2 kg/m., Conclusions: Carriage of the D allele of the ACE gene is a strong, independent risk factor for excess weight gain after liver transplantation.

Abstract: Background: In the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, regimens including pegylated interferon-alpha are superior to those including standard interferon; the present retrospective study was performed to verify whether the same is applicable to biopsy-proven recurrent hepatitis C (genotype 1b) after liver transplantation (OLT)., Methods: Twenty-four patients (16 male) were studied. Twelve had received interferon-alpha(2b) (IFN), 9 MU weekly and 12 received pegylated interferon-alpha(2b) (PEG-IFN), 0.5 microg/kg weekly. All had received oral ribavirin 600-800 mg/day. Treatment duration was intended for 12 months. A repeat liver biopsy, with evaluation of the Ishak grading and staging scores, was obtained at 1 year., Results: Only 12/24 patients (50%) completed a full year of therapy; 17 (71%) experienced side-effects requiring a 50% dosage reduction or discontinuation of the IFN, PEG-IFN and/or ribavirin. This was observed in 6/12 patients (50%) treated with IFN in comparison to 11/12 patients (92%) treated with PEG-IFN (P < 0.05). The difference was mainly accounted for by anemia and leukopenia that were reported in 4/12 IFN patients (33%) versus 9/12 PEG-IFN patients (75%; P < 0.05), respectively. End-of-treatment viral response (ETVR) and histological response were always associated and occurred in 4/24 patients (17%), two in each treatment arm. Patients with ETVR were younger, had always completed 1 year of therapy, had had recurrent hepatitis later after transplantation and presented a higher baseline grading score., Conclusions: In the OLT setting, the potential benefits of antiviral treatments including PEG-IFN may be limited by the poor tolerability of the adopted drugs.

Abstract: Carriage of the epsilon4 allelic variant of the apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene might affect the outcome of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The liver transplantation setting offers the opportunity to verify the role of the donor's vs recipient's ApoE polymorphism. Twenty-four patients (16 men) with recurrent hepatitis C, all infected by HCV-1b and treated with interferon and ribavirin, were genotyped for ApoE variants. Liver biopsies were done at baseline and 12 months later After treatment, staging scores improved in 10 of 24 patients. Staging improvement was associated with recipient sex, completion of the full antiviral schedule, and recipient's epsilon4 carriage. The beneficial effect of epsilon4 carriage toward the progression of fibrosis was due entirely to the contribution given by male patients and was independent of the viral response. Recipients', but not donors', carriage of at least 1 epsilon4 allele might be associated with a better histologic outcome in recurrent HCV infection.

Abstract: Adefovir-dipivoxil has been shown to be effective against lamivudine-resistant mutants in immunocompetent patients and in a small number of liver transplant recipients with recurrent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The therapeutic role of adefovir-dipivoxil in acute de novo HBV infection after transplantation is uncertain. We describe a case of acute de novo HBV infection that occurred after liver transplantation and that was treated with lamivudine followed (when viral escape mutants emerged) by adefovir-dipivoxil rescue. Treatment outcome was excellent, with complete viral clearance and development of a protective titer of antibodies to anti-hepatitis B surface antigen. Because the donor was vaccinated against HBV, it is conceivable that clearance of HBV infection in the recipient might have been favored by adoptive transfer of immunity to HBV. The immune status of the donor might be a factor to consider when determining the treatment options for de novo hepatitis B.
