The olive psyllid Euphyllura straminea Loginova (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae) is one of the most important pests of olive trees in Iran. To determine this pest’s economic injury level (EIL) and to evaluate the relationship between density of nymphs (DON) and yield loss, different densities of olive psyllid nymphs were maintained on olive trees by different insecticide concentrations. Counting nymphs on olive terminal shoots was done to determine nymph abundance at the end of nymphal stage. Different densities of olive psyllid nymphs resulted in significantly different yield losses of olive trees. Regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between nymph density and yield loss. Considering pest management costs, the market value of olive, and insecticide efficiency, economic injury levels were evaluated from 4.08 to 7.14 nymphal days. The olive psyllid EIL values could be used to plan a pest control program in Zanjan and Guilan provinces.

The invasive Australian pest Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore, 1964 is recorded for the first time in Molise, Liguria and Abruzzo, respectively, based on sampling by the authors in 2014 and observations (photographs) retrieved from the internet which were taken in 2018 and 2021. The records from Molise and Abruzzo are the first ones on the Adriatic side of Italy, east of the Apennines. Furthermore, new records for the country are also provided based on collected specimens and photographs from the web taken between 2011 and 2021.

Gunung Kinabalu is famous for its exceptionally diverse fauna and flora, rich in endemism. An example is the psyllid genus Ctenarytaina that is represented by four, apparently endemic species. Here two new Ctenarytaina species, C. lienhardisp. nov. and C. smetanaisp. nov., are described from Gunung Kinabalu. The new taxa are diagnosed, illustrated and their relationships to other species in the genus are discussed. Ctenarytaina daleae Burckhardt is redescribed. The species develops on Leptospermum species (Myrtaceae) and not Syzygium as previously suggested.

Eucalyptus spp. (Myrtaceae) is economically important worldwide and is native from Australia. Glycaspis brimblecombei (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae) is an insect that causes damages in eucalyptus plantations. Field observations show that highly infested plants (susceptible), less infested plants (less susceptible), and non-infested plants (resistant) can coexist at the same eucalyptus cultivation area. The aim of this study was to compare the preferences of Glycaspis brimblecombei with Eucalyptus spp. essential oil composition, evaluating the thermal behavior and searching for repellent compounds using chromatography. Simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA–DTA) results suggest that the less volatile essential oils were obtained from more resistant eucalyptus, with total mass loss temperature between 168 and 176 oC. This behavior is due to the ratio between monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes in essential oils. Furthermore, D-limonene, caryophyllene, geranyl acetate, and other compounds may be correlated to the resistance against the insect. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) showed that susceptible samples had the highest concentrations of eucalyptol (77.0% and 49.8%) and lower concentration (3 and 9%) and variability of sesquiterpenes (7 and 10 compounds); additionally, they did not present β-guaiene, calamenene, α-copaene, α-terpinyl acetate, 1,4-cadinadiene, D-limonene, and caryophyllene in their essential oil composition. The eucalyptus resistance against Glycaspis brimblecombei is related to concentration and variability of sesquiterpenes, as well as the presence of specific compounds.

A new alien psyllid Glycaspis brimblecombei, native in Australia, was first discovered in Croatia in 2020. Its presence was also confirmed in the Botanical Garden of the Institute for Marine and Coastal Research (University of Dubrovnik) on the island of Lokrum, using DNA barcoding. Distribution and spreading of this alien species were noted as across the other continents so in Europe. The pest is considered as a threat to forestry, paper industry and could affect ornamental values of the eucalyptus species. It is important to continue with following research on this species because of the potential spreading and ascendant estimation.

The common pistachio psylla, Agonoscena pistaciae Burckhardt & Lauterer, 1989 (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae), is a key pest found in pistachio orchards in Iran. This pest has a high potential for developing resistance to insecticides due to its short life cycle and high reproductive potential. Intensive application of insecticides leads to excessive selection pressure followed by resistance to synthetic insecticides in some psylla populations. In this research, effects of four concentrations of three extensively used insecticides (spirotetramat, acetamiprid, and hexaflumuron) on energy resources (like sugar, lipid, glycogen, and protein contents), energy consumption, and cellular energy allocation were investigated in resistant and susceptible populations of the common pistachio psylla in the Kerman province of Iran. Energy resource contents in the susceptible population (133 331.2 mj/insect) were significantly more than in the resistant population (96 253.5 mj/insect), whereas energy consumption in the resistant population (38 630.4 mj energy/h/insect) was higher than in the susceptible population (31 276.8 mj energy/h/insect). Additionally, cellular energy allocation in the resistant population (2 400.9 mj energy/h/insect) was higher than in the susceptible population (2 126.13 mj energy/h/insect). Therefore, stress (especially toxicants) causes variations in metabolism, which influences the growth and reproduction of the pest.

The Australian red gum lerp psyllid Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore, 1964 is recorded for the first time in Croatia. In the paper, a brief overview of the new pest with the locality of its first occurrence is provided.

Blastopsylla occidentalis Taylor,1985 (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae) é um psilídeo que tem como hospedeiro o eucalipto, originário da Austrália, foi introduzido no Brasil em meados da década de 1990. Devido à escassez de informações a respeito da biologia desse inseto, este trabalho teve como objetivo conhecer o efeito da temperatura no desenvolvimento e reprodução do psilídeo sob condições de laboratório. O experimento foi realizado entre 2018 e 2019, em câmaras climatizadas reguladas em cinco temperaturas (15, 20, 25, 30 e 35°C). Os parâmetros observados nessa etapa do experimento foram: período de desenvolvimento dos ovos (número de dias, da postura até a eclosão); taxa de eclosão de imaturos; desenvolvimento de imaturos; taxa de emergência de adultos; longevidade, o período (em dia) de postura até a morte dos adultos da primeira geração (F1). Como resultado obteve-se o ciclo completo nas temperaturas 20, 25 e 30oC, com duração média de 32,78, 27,76 e 28,44 dias, respectivamente. Para a geração F1, não foram observadas postura na temperatura 30ºC, enquanto em 20 e 25ºC, a fecundidade média das fêmeas foi de 19,04 e 26,40, respectivamente. A duração média do período de incubação de ovos foi de 6,70 (20ºC) e 5,59 dias (25ºC). Portanto, infere-se que as temperaturas 15 e 35ºC são limitantes para o desenvolvimento do inseto, pois, durante o estudo, os imaturos de Blastopsylla occidentalis não completaram o ciclo de desenvolvimento. A faixa de temperatura ótima para o desenvolvimento e reprodução foi entre 20 e 25ºC, sendo que em 25ºC foi a temperatura em que o inseto apresentou menor mortalidade em todas as fases, menor tempo de desenvolvimento e maior número médio de ovos/dias. Espera-se que esses resultados sirvam para conduzir estudos para a aplicação de técnicas de manejo para eventual controle da espécie.

The classification of the superfamily Psylloidea is revised to incorporate findings from recent molecular studies, and to integrate a reassessment of monophyla primarily based on molecular data with morphological evidence and previous classifications. We incorporate a reinterpretation of relevant morphology in the light of the molecular findings and discuss conflicts with respect to different data sources and sampling strategies. Seven families are recognised of which four (Calophyidae, Carsidaridae, Mastigimatidae and Triozidae) are strongly supported, and three (Aphalaridae, Liviidae and Psyllidae) weakly or moderately supported. Although the revised classification is mostly similar to those recognised by recent authors, there are some notable differences, such as Diaphorina and Katacephala which are transferred from Liviidae to Psyllidae. Five new subfamilies and one new genus are described, and one secondary homonym is replaced by a new species name. A new or revised status is proposed for one family, four subfamilies, four tribes, seven subtribes and five genera. One tribe and eight genera / subgenera are synonymised, and 32 new and six revised species combinations are proposed. All recognised genera of Psylloidea (extant and fossil) are assigned to family level taxa, except for one which is considered a nomen dubium.

Yang & Li (1982b) erected Celtisaspis for five new Chinese species (Celtisaspis sinica, C. guizhouana, C. zhejiangana, C. beijingana and C. liaoningana) and two Japanese species, C. japonica (Miyatake, 1968) and C. usubai (Miyatake, 1980), previously assigned to Pachypsylla. Li (2011) synonymised C. beijingana and C. liaoningana. According to Yang & Li’s (1982b) and Li’s (2011) descriptions, keys to species and illustrations, Celtisaspis sinica, C. guizhouana and C. zhejiangana differ in the length of veins M 1+2 and Cu 1a, the shape of cell cu 1, as well as in the pattern of the forewing. We examined many specimens from several provinces in Korea as well as from Japan and China, and conclude that these differences reflect intraspecific variation including also C. japonica. There are no significant differences in the male and female terminalia. Similarly, C. beijingana and its synonym C. liaoningana do not differ significantly from C. usubai. We therefore propose the following synonymies: Celtisaspis japonica (Miyatake, 1968) = Celtisaspis guizhouana Yang & Li, 1982, syn. nov. = Celtisaspis sinica Yang & Li, 1982, syn. nov. = Celtisaspis zhejiangana Yang & Li, 1982, syn. nov.; Celtisaspis usubai (Miyatake, 1980) = Celtisaspis beijingana Yang & Li, 1982, syn. nov. Celtisaspis japonica and C. usubai differ from each other morphologically and in the galls they induce, hornshaped and pouch-shaped, respectively (Miyatake 1980). Celtisaspis cornicola (Frauenfeld, 1869), described from Shanghai (China), induces the same characteristic horn-shaped galls on the leaves of Celtis sinensis (Frauenfeld 1869, misidentified as Rhamnus sp.; Burckhardt 1989, as Celtis sp.) as Celtisaspis japonica and constitutes, therefore, a senior subjective synonym of the latter: Arytaina cornicola Frauenfeld, 1869 = Pachypsylla japonica Miyatake, 1968, syn. nov. In accordance with article 23.9.1 of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (1999, 2012; thereafter ICZN 1999/2012), the precedence can be reversed if a senior synonym, i.e. Celtisaspis cornicola, has not been used as a valid name after 1899 (23.9.1.1.), and if a junior synonym, i.e. Celtisaspis japonica, has been used for a particular taxon, as its presumed valid name, in at least 25 works, published by at least 10 authors in the immediately preceding 50 years and encompassing a span of not less than 10 years (23.9.1.2.) Twelve Ctenarytaina species with confirmed or suspected associations with Syzygium are revised. The following six new species are diagnosed, described and illustrated: Ctenarytaina baliota Burckhardt sp. nov. (from Malaysia: Sabah), C. daleae Burckhardt sp. nov. (Malaysia: Sabah), C. loebli Burckhardt sp. nov. (Malaysia: Sabah), C. melanota Burckhardt sp. nov. (South Africa), C. picea Burckhardt sp. nov. (Thailand) and C. taylori Burckhardt sp. nov. (Malaysia: Sabah). One new generic synonym is proposed (Ctenarytaina = Eurhinocola syn. nov.) as are two new combinations: Ctenarytaina aurata (Li), comb. nov. from Neophyllura, and Ctenarytaina gravelyi (Crawford), comb. nov. from Eurhinocola. A key is provided to adults and, as far as known, to the fifth instar immatures. Two African species (Ctenarytaina fomenae Tamesse and C. melanota sp. nov.) induce witches’ broom on their hosts. Confirmed host plants of Ctenarytaina species are from Syzygium (6 spp.), Eucalyptus (5 spp.) and other Myrtaceae, as well as from one genus in each of the families Onagraceae, Rutaceae and Theaceae. More than two thirds of the species with confirmed hosts are monophagous, the others are narrowly oligophagous. About one fifth of the described Ctenarytaina species have adventive populations outside their natural range. This study was carried out in 2015-2017 with the aim of determining the distribution and population dynamics of Pistachio psylla [Agonoscena pistaciae Burck. and Laut.) (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae)] in Siirt province. In order to determine the distribution area, observation and examination were conducted in 66 pistachio orchards in 24 villages in Central, Aydinlar, Eruh, Kurtalan, Pervari, and Sirvan districts of Siirt. In order to determine the population dynamics of the pest, observation and examination were conducted in 4 pistachio orchards in Central district of Siirt. Beating and visual inspection method were used to determine the distribution area and visual inspection method was used to determine the density of nimf and egg stage of A. pistaciae. The sampling was done at 1-2 week intervals. As a result of the study, A. pistaciae was found to be distributed in all districts and all of the controlled orchards were infected. Wintered adults are determined in the middle of April the first eggs in the last week of April and the first nymph in late April-early May. The adults pass through winter were seen in middle of September. It was found that the population density of the nymph and egg of A. pistaciae increased slightly in late May and early June but its nymph, egg and adult population density was high from late August to mind November. That time it exceeded the economic loss threshold in many orchards. In the checks to be made in late May-early June and last july mid –August, one or two chemical applications will be sufficient if 20-30 nymphs are detected per compound leaf.

Eucalyptus spp belong to the family of Myrtaceae and grow all over the world and are adapted to different climates and soils. In Cameroon, these plants are very important for their medicinal and ecological virtues. Eucalyptus globulus has economically and ornamentally values. Blastopsylla occidentalis Taylor (Psylloidea: Aphalaridae) is one of the insects feeding on this plant and its causes severe damages to their host plants. Significant damage occurred in nurseries and in a very young plantations of Eucalyptus spp. The biology of B. occidentalis was studied from July 2010 to June 2011 at Yaounde. The parameters mating process, choice of the egg-laying site by the females, fecundity of the females, longevity of the adults, embryonic and larval development, life cycle and sex ratio were studied. The results showed that males emerged before females, and the mating process lasted about 42 minutes. The longevity of adults was 11 days on average and egg-laying began 8 days after emergence. The average fertility was 38 eggs per female. The eggs were laid on the buds, bracts, young leaves and twigs of its host plant. The life cycle, from egg to egg, required 32 days on average. The sex ratio was close to 1.03. This species fed and developed on Eucalyptus spp. has never been observed on other plants species in the study area, suggesting a specificity of this psyllid to its host plant. These results can be considered as an important step for the establishment of integrated pest control against Eucalyptus psyllid pest species in Cameroon.

Homogeneous forest plantations are commonly attacked by biotic agents due to their lower biological diversity. This type of planting, especially of eucalyptus, was intensified in Southeast of the state of Pará, Brazil, from the 1990s onwards. Thus, the objective of this study was to prospect the diversity of aerial entomofauna, evaluate their responses to seasonality, and detect the occurrence of possible important pest insects for monocultures of Eucalyptus spp. Yellow adhesive traps were used for sampling in plantations of E. urophylla and the hybrid E. grandis x E. urophylla. In total, 12 collections were carried out, with 27 traps each, divided into dry and rainy seasons, during two years in three municipalities in the Southeast of Pará. The Shannon-Wiener and Pielou diversity indices were calculated. Families were classified according to their faunal diversity, through the dominance, frequency, abundance, and constancy indices. The 2 x 2 factorial analysis test was performed to compare the effect of seasonality between the eucalyptus. A total of 10,280 individuals were collected, distributed in eight orders and 68 families. The most abundant orders were Hemiptera, Coleoptera, and Diptera, where Hemiptera was the most abundant in the dry season, and Diptera in the rainy season. The Aphalaridae and Thaumastocoridae families were the most important. The occurrence of the pest species Blastopsylla occidentalis, Glycaspis brimblecombei, and Thaumastocoris peregrinus was also recorded. No total, foram realizadas 12 coletas, com 27 armadilhas cada, divididas em estação seca e chuvosa, durante dois anos em três municípios do Sudeste do Pará. Foram calculados os índices de diversidade de Shannon-Wiener e Pielou. As famílias foram classificadas quanto à diversidade faunística, através dos índices de dominância, frequência, abundância e constância. O teste de análise Fatorial 2 x 2 foi realizado para comparar o efeito da sazonalidade entre os eucaliptos. Foram coletados 10.280 indivíduos, distribuídos em oito ordens e 68 famílias. As ordens mais abundantes foram Hemiptera, Coleoptera e Diptera, onde Hemiptera foi a mais abundante na estação seca, e Diptera na estação chuvosa. As famílias Aphalaridae e Thaumastocoridae foram as mais importantes. Também foi registrada a ocorrência das espécies praga Blastopsylla occidentalis, Glycaspis brimblecombei e Thaumastocoris peregrinus.

Simple Summary Haloxylon spp. have been infested by various gall inducers, and natural enemies that impact pest populations must be understood to build integrated pest control strategies affecting pest dynamics. However, limited studies report on the gall inducers and parasitoids of flower-like galls on Haloxylon, as well as the parasitic efficacy of the parasitoids. This study aimed to determine the main gall inducers that induced flower-like galls on Haloxylon ammodendron and H. persicum, and the parasitoid complex associated with them. In total, five species of gall inducers and three species of parasitoids were obtained from three types of flower-like galls on Haloxylon. Further, the parasitization indexes, emergence, and lifespan of parasitoids were also discussed. The present study may serve as a basis for understanding the importance of biological investigations of parasitoids in the gall inducers living in flower-like galls, which is important for pest control and the conservation of the ecological environment in the Haloxylon forest. Abstract Saxaul is a kind of dominant perennial psammophyte that widely distributes in arid and semi-arid desert areas, and it has multiple functions in preventing desertification, especially in windbreak and sand fixation. Various gall inducers induce galls on the saxaul, including the flower-like gall. Parasitoids have great potentiality in controlling gall inducers. However, studies about gall inducers and parasitoids of flower-like galls on Haloxylon, as well as the parasitic efficacy of the parasitoids, are rarely reported. In this study, the flower-like galls were observed on Haloxylon ammodendron and H. persicum in Fukang, Xinjiang, China. Two types of flower-like galls were found on H. ammodendron, while only one type was found on H. persicum. In total, five species of gall inducers and three species of parasitoids were obtained from the galls mentioned above. All the galls were induced by Caillardia (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae), which were mostly bivoltine in Fukang. Besides, their parasitoids Psyllaephagus caillardiae and P. longiventris could be observed on all the types of galls. Additionally, correlative studies on the parasitization indexes demonstrated that all the dominant parasitoids of diverse flower-like galls were P. caillardiae, which were slightly more in number than the P. ogazae discovered in the flower bud-like galls. In addition, the relevance between the emergence or lifespan of parasitoids and temperature was also investigated. The results showed that the number of parasitoids emerging decreased rapidly after a period of enhancement with the increase of temperature, including an optimum temperature, while the lifespan of wasps gradually shortened with the temperature rising. Our results highlight the importance of the biological investigation of parasitoids in the gall inducers lived in closed galls, which may provide critical evidence for us to understand its potential application in biological control.
