Search

The Villafranca project is studying Galactic stellar groups with OB stars combining information from $Gaia$ and ground-based surveys. We summarize the status of the project and we present its most important results. The Villafranca project has been used to produce a new astrometric calibration for $Gaia$ (E)DR3, which improves the previous one significantly for bright stars. We have discovered that dynamical interactions among massive stars at a very young age ($\sim$1 Ma or less) can play a significant interaction in the dynamical evolution of clusters. As a consequence, our current view of the massive-star IMF may be distorted and the number of free-floating neutron stars and black holes higher than previously considered., Comment: To appear in Highlights of Spanish Astrophysics XIII, P254

We produce a new photometric calibration for the combined six-filter system formed by $Gaia$ DR2 + EDR3 $G$+$G_{\rm BP}$+$G_{\rm RP}$ using an improved STIS/HST spectrophotometric library with very red stars. The comparison between observed and synthetic photometry yields residual dispersions of just 3.4-8.7 mmag, resulting in the most accurate and precise whole-sky large-dynamic-range optical photometric system ever obtained. We present a new supergiant-rich stellar cluster hidden by extinction and christen it as Barb\'a 2, in honor of its discoverer Rodolfo Barb\'a. The cluster is at a distance of $7.39^{+0.65}_{-0.55}$ kpc and contains several supergiants, of which we provide spectral classifications for one blue, one yellow, and five red ones. The cluster extinction indicates an above-average grain-size ($R_{5495} \sim 3.7$), its age has a minimum value of 10 Ma, and its core radius is $0.84\pm0.19$ pc., Comment: To appear in Highlights of Spanish Astrophysics XIII, P252, new version with updated references

Surveys in the Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud revealed that the majority of massive stars will interact with companions during their lives. However, knowledge of the binary properties of massive stars at low metallicity, which approaches the conditions of the Early Universe, remains sparse. We present the Binarity at LOw Metallicity (BLOeM) campaign - an ESO large programme designed to obtain 25 epochs of spectroscopy for 929 massive stars in the SMC - the lowest metallicity conditions in which multiplicity is probed to date (Z = 0.2 Zsun). BLOeM will provide (i) the binary fraction, (ii) the orbital configurations of systems with periods P < 3 yr, (iii) dormant OB+BH binaries, and (iv) a legacy database of physical parameters of massive stars at low metallicity. The stars are observed with the LR02 setup of the giraffe instrument of the Very Large Telescope (3960-4570A, resolving power R=6200; typical signal-to-noise ratio S/N=70-100). This paper utilises the first 9 epochs obtained over a three-month time. We describe the survey and data reduction, perform a spectral classification of the stacked spectra, and construct a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram of the sample via spectral-type and photometric calibrations. The sample covers spectral types from O4 to F5, spanning the effective temperature and luminosity ranges 6.5

(ABRIDGED) CONTEXT: The Villafranca project is combining Gaia data with ground-based surveys to analyze Galactic stellar groups with OB stars. AIMS: We want to analyze Stock 18 within the Villafranca project, a very young stellar cluster with a symmetrical and compact H II region around it. METHODS: We analyze the core, massive-star population, extinction, distance, membership, internal dynamics, density profile, age, IMF, total mass, stellar variability, and Galactic location of Stock 18 with Gaia data and ground-based spectroscopy. RESULTS: Stock 18 is a very young (~1.0 Ma) cluster located at a distance of 2.91+-0.10 kpc dominated by the GLS 13 370 system, whose primary is an O9 V star. We propose that Stock 18 was in a very compact state (~0.1 pc) about 1.0 Ma ago and that most massive stars were ejected at that time without significantly affecting the less massive stars as a result of multi-body dynamical interactions. Given its age close to 1.0 Ma, the dynamical interactions took place very soon after massive star formation. Well defined expanding stellar clusters have been observed before but none as young as this one. The IMF is top heavy but if we discard the ejected ones it becomes nearly canonical. Therefore, this is another example in addition to the one we previously found (the Bermuda cluster) of (a) a very young cluster with an already evolved PDMF (b) that has significantly contributed to the future population of free-floating compact objects. If confirmed in more clusters, the number of such compact objects may be higher in the Milky Way than previously thought. Stock 18 has a variable extinction with an average value of R_5495 higher than the canonical one of 3.1. The cluster is above our Galactic mid-plane and has a distinct motion with respect to its surrounding old population, which is possibly an influence of the Perseus spiral arm., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Observations of individual massive stars, super-luminous supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, and gravitational-wave events involving spectacular black-hole mergers, indicate that the low-metallicity Universe is fundamentally different from our own Galaxy. Many transient phenomena will remain enigmatic until we achieve a firm understanding of the physics and evolution of massive stars at low metallicity (Z). The Hubble Space Telescope has devoted 500 orbits to observe 250 massive stars at low Z in the ultraviolet (UV) with the COS and STIS spectrographs under the ULLYSES program. The complementary ``X-Shooting ULLYSES'' (XShootU) project provides enhanced legacy value with high-quality optical and near-infrared spectra obtained with the wide-wavelength coverage X-shooter spectrograph at ESO's Very Large Telescope. We present an overview of the XShootU project, showing that combining ULLYSES UV and XShootU optical spectra is critical for the uniform determination of stellar parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, luminosity, and abundances, as well as wind properties such as mass-loss rates in function of Z. As uncertainties in stellar and wind parameters percolate into many adjacent areas of Astrophysics, the data and modelling of the XShootU project is expected to be a game-changer for our physical understanding of massive stars at low Z. CONTEXT: The unparalleled characteristics of Gaia photometry make it an excellent choice to study stellar variability. AIMS: To measure the phot. dispersion in G+G_BP+G_RP of the 145 677 450 Gaia DR3 5-parameter sources with G <= 17 mag and G_BP-G_RP with -1.0 to 8.0 mag. To use that unbiased sample to analyze stellar variability in the Milky Way, LMC, and SMC. METHODS: We convert from magnitude uncertainties to the observed phot. dispersions, calculate the instrumental component as a function of apparent magnitude and color, and use it to transform the observed dispersions into the astrophysical ones. We give variability indices in the three bands for the whole sample. We use the subsample of Rimoldini et al. that includes light curves and variability types to calibrate our results and establish their limitations. RESULTS: We use information from the MW, LMC, and SMC CAMDs to discuss variability across the HRD. WDs and sdBs are more variable than MS or RC stars but their variability decreases for the former with age. The MS region in the Gaia CAMD has an s_G distribution peaks at low values (~1-2 mmag) and has a large tail dominated by EBs, RR Lyr stars, and YSOs. RC stars are characterized by little variability, with their s_G distribution peaking at 1 mmag or less. The stars in the PMS region are highly variable, with a power law distribution in s_G with slope 2.75 and a cutoff for values lower than 7 mmag. The luminous red stars region of the Gaia CAMD has the highest variability, with its extreme dominated by AGB stars and with a power law in s_G with a slope of ~2.2 that extends from there to a cutoff of 7 mmag. We show that our method can be used to search for LMC Cepheids. We analyze four stellar clusters with O stars and detect a strong difference in s_G between stars that are already in the MS and those that are still in the PMS. The empirical distribution of projected rotational velocities (vsini) in massive O-type stars is characterized by a dominant slow velocity component and a tail of fast rotators. Binary interaction has been proposed to play a dominant role in the formation of this tail. We perform a complete and homogeneous search for empirical signatures of binarity in a sample of 54 fast-rotating stars with the aim of evaluating this hypothesis. This working sample has been extracted from a larger sample of 415 Galactic O-type stars which covers the full range of vsini values. We use new and archival multi-epoch spectra in order to detect spectroscopic binary systems. We complement this information with Gaia proper motions and TESS photometric data to aid in the identification of runaway stars and eclipsing binaries, respectively. The identified fraction of single-lined spectroscopic binary (SB1) systems and apparently single stars among the fast-rotating sample is $\sim$18% and $\sim$70%, respectively. When comparing these percentages with those corresponding to the slow-rotating sample we find that our sample of fast rotators is characterized by a slightly larger percentage of SB1 systems ($\sim$18% vs. $\sim$13%) and a considerably smaller fraction of clearly detected SB2 systems (8% vs. 33%). Overall, there seems to be a clear deficit of spectroscopic binaries (SB1+SB2) among fast-rotating O-type stars ($\sim$26% vs. $\sim$46%). On the contrary, the fraction of runaway stars is significantly higher in the fast-rotating domain ($\sim$33-50%) than among those stars with vsini < 200 km/s. Lastly, almost 65% of the apparently single fast-rotating stars are runaways. Our empirical results seem to be in good agreement with the idea that the tail of fast-rotating O-type stars (with vsini > 200 km/s) is mostly populated by post-interaction binary products., Comment: 33 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in "Astronomy and Astrophysics"

The Gaia-ESO survey sample of massive OB stars in the Carina Nebula consists of 234 stars. The addition of brighter sources from the Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey and additional sources from the literature allows us to create the most complete census of massive OB stars done so far in the region. It contains a total of 316 stars, being 18 of them in the background and four in the foreground. Of the 294 stellar systems in Car OB1, 74 are of O type, 214 are of non-supergiant B type and 6 are of WR or non-O supergiant (II to Ia) spectral class. We identify 20 spectroscopic binary systems with an O-star primary, of which 6 are reported for the first time, and another 18 with a B-star primary, of which 13 are new detections. The average observed double-lined binary fraction of O-type stars in the surveyed region is 0.35, which represents a lower limit. We find a good correlation between the spectroscopic n-qualifier and the projected rotational velocity of the stars. The fraction of candidate runaways among the stars with and without the n-qualifier is 4.4% and 2.4%, respectively, although non resolved double-lined binaries can be contaminating the fast rotators sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 62 pages, 8 figures

Two main scenarios have been proposed for origin of massive runaway stars -- dynamical ejection or release from a binary at the first core collapse -- but their relative contribution remains debated. Using two large spectroscopic campaigns towards massive stars in 30 Doradus, we aim to provide observational constraints on the properties of the O-type runaway population in the most massive active star-forming region in the Local group. We use RV measurements of the O-type star populations in 30 Doradus obtained by the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey and the Tarantula Massive Binary Monitoring to identify single and binary O-type runaways. We discuss their rotational properties and qualitatively compare observations with expectations of ejection scenarios. We identify 23 single and one binary O-type runaway objects, most of them outside the main star-forming regions in 30 Doradus. We find an overabundance of rapid rotators (vsini > 200km/s) among the runaway population, providing an explanation of the overabundance of rapidly rotating stars in the 30 Doradus field. Considerations of the projected rotation rates and runaway line-of-sight (los) velocities reveal a conspicuous absence of rapidly rotating (vsini > 210k/ms), fast moving (v_{los} > 60km/s) runaways, and suggest the presence of two different populations of runaway stars: a population of rapidly-spinning but slowly moving runaways and a population of fast moving but slowly rotating ones. These are detected with a ratio close to 2:1 in our sample. We argue that slowly moving but rapidly spinning runaways result from binary ejections, while rapidly moving but slowly spinning runaways could result from dynamical ejections. Given that detection biases will more strongly impact the slow-moving population, our results suggest that the binary evolution scenario dominates the current massive runaway population in 30 Doradus., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters; 9 pages, 5 figures

The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is an ambitious project designed to obtain astrophysical parameters and elemental abundances for 100,000 stars, including large representative samples of the stellar populations in the Galaxy, and a well-defined sample of 60 (plus 20 archive) open clusters. We provide internally consistent results calibrated on benchmark stars and star clusters, extending across a very wide range of abundances and ages. This provides a legacy data set of intrinsic value, and equally a large wide-ranging dataset that is of value for homogenisation of other and future stellar surveys and Gaia's astrophysical parameters. This article provides an overview of the survey methodology, the scientific aims, and the implementation, including a description of the data processing for the GIRAFFE spectra. A companion paper (arXiv:2206.02901) introduces the survey results. Gaia-ESO aspires to quantify both random and systematic contributions to measurement uncertainties. Thus all available spectroscopic analysis techniques are utilised, each spectrum being analysed by up to several different analysis pipelines, with considerable effort being made to homogenise and calibrate the resulting parameters. We describe here the sequence of activities up to delivery of processed data products to the ESO Science Archive Facility for open use. The Gaia-ESO Survey obtained 202,000 spectra of 115,000 stars using 340 allocated VLT nights between December 2011 and January 2018 from GIRAFFE and UVES. The full consistently reduced final data set of spectra was released through the ESO Science Archive Facility in late 2020, with the full astrophysical parameters sets following in 2022., Comment: 38 pages. At the time of this meeting, the latest Gaia data release is EDR3, published on 3 December 2020, but the next one, DR3, will appear soon, on 13 June 2022. This contribution describes, on the one hand, Gaia EDR3 results on massive stars and young stellar clusters, placing special emphasis on how a correct treatment of the astrometric and photometric calibration yields results that are simultaneously precise and accurate. In the last 15 years different ground-based spectroscopic surveys have been started (and completed) with the general aim of delivering stellar parameters and elemental abundances for large samples of Galactic stars, complementing Gaia astrometry. Among those surveys, the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey (GES), the only one performed on a 8m class telescope, was designed to target 100,000 stars using FLAMES on the ESO VLT (both Giraffe and UVES spectrographs), covering all the Milky Way populations, with a special focus on open star clusters. This article provides an overview of the survey implementation (observations, data quality, analysis and its success, data products, and releases), of the open cluster survey, of the science results and potential, and of the survey legacy. A companion article (Gilmore et al.) reviews the overall survey motivation, strategy, Giraffe pipeline data reduction, organisation, and workflow. The GES has determined homogeneous good-quality radial velocities and stellar parameters for a large fraction of its more than 110,000 unique target stars. Elemental abundances were derived for up to 31 elements for targets observed with UVES. Lithium abundances are delivered for about 1/3 of the sample. The analysis and homogenisation strategies have proven to be successful; several science topics have been addressed by the Gaia-ESO consortium and the community, with many highlight results achieved. The final catalogue has been released through the ESO archive at the end of May 2022, including the complete set of advanced data products. Multiplicity is a ubiquitous characteristic of massive stars. Multiple systems offer us a unique observational constraint on the formation of high-mass systems. Herschel 36 A is a massive triple system composed of a close binary (Ab1-Ab2) and an outer component (Aa). We measured the orbital motion of the outer component of Herschel 36 A using infrared interferometry with the AMBER and PIONIER instruments of ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer. Our immediate aims are to constrain the masses of all components of this system and to determine if the outer orbit is co-planar with the inner one. Reported spectroscopic data for all three components of this system and our interferometric data allow us to derive full orbital solutions for the outer orbit Aa-Ab and the inner orbit Ab1-Ab2. For the first time, we derive the absolute masses of mAa = 22.3 +/- 1.7 M_sun, mAb1 = 20.5 +/- 1.5 M_sun and mAb2 = 12.5 +/- 0.9 M_sun. Despite not being able to resolve the close binary components, we infer the inclination of their orbit by imposing the same parallax as the outer orbit. Inclinations derived from the inner and outer orbits imply a modest difference of about 22 deg. between the orbital planes. We discuss this result and the formation of Herschel 36 A in the context of Core Accretion and Competitive Accretion models, which make different predictions regarding the statistic of the relative orbital inclinations., Comment: accepted to be published by MNRAS, 8 pages, 5 figures

The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) is a large public spectroscopic survey that has collected, over a period of 6 years, spectra of ~ 10^5 stars. This survey provides not only the reduced spectra, but also the stellar parameters and abundances resulting from the analysis of the spectra. The GES dataflow is organised in 19 working groups. Working group 13 (WG13) is responsible for the spectral analysis of the hottest stars (O, B and A type, with a formal cut-off of Teff > 7000 K) that were observed as part of GES. We present the procedures and techniques that have been applied to the reduced spectra, in order to determine the stellar parameters and abundances of these stars. The procedure used is similar to that of other working groups in GES. A number of groups (called `Nodes') each independently analyse the spectra, using their state-of-the-art techniques and codes. Specific for the analysis in WG13 is the large temperature range that is covered (Teff = 7000 - 50,000 K), requiring the use of different analysis codes. Most Nodes can therefore only handle part of the data. Quality checks are applied to the results of these Nodes by comparing them to benchmark stars, and by comparing them one to another. For each star the Node values are then homogenised into a single result: the recommended parameters and abundances. Eight Nodes each analysed (part of) the data. In total 17,693 spectra of 6462 stars were analysed, most of them in 37 open star clusters. The homogenisation led to stellar parameters for 5584 stars. Abundances were determined for a more limited number of stars. Elements studied are He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Al, Si and Sc. Abundances for at least one of those elements were determined for 292 stars. Massive stars at low metallicity are among the main feedback agents in the early Universe and in present-day star forming galaxies. When in binaries, these stars are potential progenitors of gravitational-wave events. Knowledge of stellar masses is a prerequisite to understanding evolution and feedback of low-metallicity massive stars. Using abundant spectroscopic and photometric measurements of an outstandingly bright eclipsing binary, we compare its dynamic, spectroscopic, and evolutionary mass estimates and develop a binary evolution scenario. We comprehensively studied the eclipsing binary system, AzV 476, in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The light curve and radial velocities were analyzed to obtain the orbital parameters. The photometric and spectroscopic data in the UV and optical were analyzed using the Potsdam Wolf-Rayet model atmospheres. The obtained results are interpreted using binary-evolution tracks. AzV 476 consists of an O4IV-III((f))p primary and an O9.5:Vn secondary. Both components have similar current masses (~20 M$_{\odot}$) obtained from both the orbital and spectroscopic analysis. The wind mass-loss rate of log($\dot{M}$/(M$_{\odot}$/yr))=-6.2 of the primary is a factor of ten higher than a recent empirical prescription for single O stars in the SMC. Only close-binary evolution with mass transfer can reproduce the current stellar and orbital parameters. The binary evolutionary model reveals that the primary has lost about half of its initial mass and is already core helium burning. Our comprehensive analysis of AzV 476 yields a consistent set of parameters and suggests previous case B mass transfer. The derived stellar masses agree within their uncertainties. The moderate masses of AzV 476 underline the scarcity of bright massive stars in the SMC. The core helium burning nature of the primary indicates that stripped stars might be hidden among OB-type populations., Comment: 18 pages + 5 pages appendix, 17 figures, 8 tables. We use Gaia EDR3 astrometry to propose that a dynamical interaction between the multiple system $\theta^1$ Ori C and $\theta^1$ Ori F ejected the latter as a walkaway star ~1100 years ago (without deceleration) or somewhat later (with a more likely deceleration included). It is unclear whether the final 3-D velocity of $\theta^1$ Ori F will be large enough to escape the Orion nebula cluster., Comment: Accepted in RNAAS

CONTEXT. Dynamical interactions in young stellar clusters can eject massive stars early in their lives and significantly alter their mass functions. If all of the most massive stars are lost, we are left with an orphan cluster. AIMS. We study the Bermuda cluster (Villafranca O-014 NW), the most significant young stellar group in the North America and Pelican nebulae, and the massive stars that may have been ejected from it to test if it has been orphaned. METHODS. We use Gaia EDR3 parallaxes and proper motions to search for walkaway/runaway stars in the vicinity of the North America and Pelican nebulae. The candidates are analyzed with spectroscopy and photometry to assess their nature and their trajectories are traced back in time to determine at what time they left the Bermuda cluster. RESULTS. We detect three ejection events (Bajamar, Toronto, and HD 201 795 events) that expelled 5, 2, and 2 systems, respectively, or 6, 3, and 3 stars if we count the individual components in spectroscopic/eclipsing binaries. The events took place 1.611$\pm$0.011 Ma, 1.496$\pm$0.044 Ma, and 1.905$\pm$0.037 Ma ago, respectively, but our analysis is marginally consistent with the first two being simultaneous. We detect bow shocks in WISE images associated with four of the ejected systems. Combining the three events, the Bermuda cluster has lost >200 M_Sol, including its three most massive stars, so it can be considered an orphan cluster. One consequence is that the PDMF of the cluster has been radically altered from its top-heavy initial value to one compatible with a Kroupa-like function. Another one is that the cluster is currently expanding with a dynamical time scale consistent with the cause being the ejection events. A scenario in which the Bermuda cluster was formed in a conveyor belt fashion over several hundreds of ka or even 1 Ma is consistent with all the observables. CONTEXT. The Gaia EDR3 parallaxes constitute the most detailed and accurate dataset that can be currently used to determine stellar distances in the solar neighborhood. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement in their calibration and systematic effects can be further reduced in some circumstances. AIMS. The aim of this paper is to determine an improved Gaia EDR3 parallax bias as a function of magnitude, color, and ecliptic latitude using a single method applied to stars in open clusters, globular clusters, the LMC, and the SMC. METHODS. I study the behavior of the residuals or differences between the individual (stellar) parallaxes and the group parallaxes, which are assumed constant for the corresponding cluster or galaxy. This is done by first applying the Lindegren et al. (2021) zero point and then calculating a new zero point from the residuals of the first analysis. RESULTS. The Lindegren zero point shows very small residuals as a function of magnitude between individual and group parallaxes for G < 13 but significant ones for brighter stars, especially blue ones. The new zero point reduces those residuals, especially in the 9.2 < G < 13 range. The k factor that is used to convert from catalog parallax uncertainties to external uncertainties is small (1.1-1.7) for 9.2 < G < 11 and G > 13, intermediate (1.7-2.0) for 11 < G < 13, and large (>2.0) for G <9.2. Therefore, significant corrections are needed to calculate distance uncertainties from Gaia EDR3 parallaxes for some stars. There is still room for improvement if future analyses add information from additional stellar clusters, especially for red stars with G < 11 and blue stars with G < 9.2. I also calculate k for stars with RUWE values between 1.4 and 8.0 and for stars with 6-parameter solutions, allowing for a correct estiimation of their uncertainties. CONTEXT. This is the second paper of a series on Galactic OB groups that uses astrometric and photometric data from Gaia and spectral classifications from GOSSS and LiLiMaRlin. The previous paper was based on Gaia DR2, this is based on Gaia EDR3. AIMS. The two aims of this paper are to revise the results for the sample from paper I using Gaia EDR3 data and to expand the sample of analyzed stellar groups to 26, from Villafranca O-001 to Villafranca O-026. METHODS. We use GOSSS to select Galactic stellar groups with O stars and an updated version of the method in paper 0 of this series, combining Gaia EDR3 G+GBP+GRP photometry, positions, proper motions, and parallaxes to assign memberships and measure distances. We present 99 spectra from GOSSS and 32 from LiLiMaRlin for stars in the analyzed groups or in their foreground. RESULTS. We derive distances to the 26 stellar groups with unprecedented precision and accuracy, with total uncertainties <1% within 1 kpc and of ~3% around 3 kpc, values that are almost 4x better than for Gaia DR2. We provide homogeneous spectral types for 110 stars and correct a number of errors in the literature, especially for objects in the Orion nebula cluster. For each of the groups we discuss its membership and present possible runaway/walkaway stars. At least two groups, Villafranca O-O12 S and Villafranca O-014 NW, are orphan clusters in which the most massive stars have been ejected by dynamical interactions, leaving objects with a capped mass function. The existence of such clusters has important consequences for the study of the IMF, the distribution of SNe across the Galaxy, and the population and dynamics of isolated compact objects. We fit PMS isochrones to four clusters to derive ages of 2.0$\pm$0.5 Ma for the sigma Orionis cluster, 4$\pm$2 Ma for NGC 2264, 5.0$\pm$0.5 Ma for NGC 2362, and 8$\pm$2 Ma for the gamma Velorum cluster. The GALANTE optical photometric survey is observing the northern Galactic plane and some adjacent regions using seven narrow- and intermediate-filters, covering a total of 1618 square degrees. The survey has been designed with multiple exposure times and at least two different air masses per field to maximize its photometric dynamic range, comparable to that of Gaia, and ensure the accuracy of its photometric calibration. The goal is to reach at least 1% accuracy and precision in the seven bands for all stars brighter than AB magnitude 17 while detecting fainter stars with lower values of the signal-to-noise ratio.The main purposes of GALANTE are the identification and study of extinguished O+B+WR stars, the derivation of their extinction characteristics, and the cataloguing of F and G stars in the solar neighbourhood. Its data will be also used for a variety of other stellar studies and to generate a high-resolution continuum-free map of the H{\alpha} emission in the Galactic plane. [ABRIDGED] AIMS: The MONOS project is collecting information and studying O-type spectroscopic binaries with delta > -20 deg. In this 2nd paper, we tackle the study of the 35 single-line spectroscopic binary (SB1) systems identified in the previous paper of the series (arXiv:1904.11385) by analyzing our data and reviewing the literature orbits of such systems. METHODS: We have measured the radial velocities for the ~700 spectra in our database using two different methods: Gaussian fitting for several diagnostic lines per object and cross-correlation using synthetic spectra. We also explored the TESS database and analyzed the light curves for 31 of the systems. RESULTS: We have confirmed 21 SB1 systems, discarded the binary nature of 6 stars (9 Sge, HD 192 281, HDE 229 232 AB, 68 Cyg, HD 108 and \alpha Cam), and left 6 stars as inconclusive due to lack of data. The remaining two stars are 15 Mon Aa which has been classified as SB2, and Cyg OB2-22 C, for which we find evidence that it is most likely a triple system where the O star is orbiting an eclipsing SB1. We have also recalculated 20 new orbital solutions, including the first spectroscopic orbital solution for V747 Cep. R 144 is the visually brightest WR star in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). R 144 was reported to be a binary, making it potentially the most massive binary thus observed. We perform a comprehensive spectral, photometric, orbital, and polarimetric analysis of R 144. R 144 is an eccentric (e=0.51) 74.2-d binary comprising two relatively evolved (age~2 Myr), H-rich WR stars. The hotter primary (WN5/6h, T=50 kK) and the cooler secondary (WN6/7h,T=45kK) have nearly equal masses. The combination of low rotation and H-depletion observed in the system is well reproduced by contemporary evolution models that include boosted mass-loss at the upper-mass end. The systemic velocity of R 144 and its relative isolation suggest that it was ejected as a runaway from the neighbouring R 136 cluster. The optical light-curve shows a clear orbital modulation that can be well explained as a combination of two processes: excess emission stemming from wind-wind collisions and double wind eclipses. Our light-curve model implies an orbital inclination of i=60.4+-1.5deg, resulting in accurately constrained dynamical masses of 74+-4 and 69+-4 Msun. Assuming that both binary components are core H-burning, these masses are difficult to reconcile with the derived luminosities (logL1,2 = 6.44, 6.39 [Lsun]), which correspond to evolutionary masses of the order of 110 and 100Msun, respectively. Taken at face value, our results imply that both stars have high classical Eddington factors of Gamma_e = 0.78+-0.1. If the stars are on the main sequence, their derived radii (~25Rsun) suggest that they are only slightly inflated, even at this high Eddington factor. Alternatively, the stars could be core-He burning, strongly inflated from the regular size of classical Wolf-Rayet stars (~1Rsun), a scenario that could help resolve the observed mass discrepancy., Comment: Accepted to A&A on the April 06 2021. 17 pages + 5 page appendix. LB-1 has variously been proposed as either an X-ray dim B-type star plus black hole (B+BH) binary, or a Be star plus an inflated stripped star (Be+Bstr) binary. The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board HST was used to obtain a flux-calibrated spectrum that is compared with non-LTE spectral energy distributions (SED) and line profiles for the proposed models. The Hubble data, together with the Gaia EDR3 parallax, provide tight constraints on the properties and stellar luminosities of the system. In the case of the Be+Bstr model we adopt the published flux ratio for the Be and Bstr stars, re-determine the T$_{eff}$ of the Bstr using the silicon ionization balance, and infer Teff for the Be star from the fit to the SED. We derive stellar parameters consistent with previous results, but with greater precision enabled by the Hubble SED. While the Be+Bstr model is a better fit to the HeI lines and cores of the Balmer lines in the optical, the B+BH model provides a better fit to the Si iv resonance lines in the UV. The analysis also implies that the Bstr star has roughly twice solar silicon abundance, difficult to reconcile with a stripped star origin. The Be star on the other hand has a rather low luminosity, and a spectroscopic mass inconsistent with its possible dynamical mass. The fit to the UV can be significantly improved by reducing the T$_{eff}$ and radius of the Be star, though at the expense of leading to a different mass ratio. In the B+BH model, the single B-type spectrum is a good match to the UV spectrum. We cross-match the Alma catalog of OB stars with Gaia DR2 astrometry and photometry as a first step towards producing a clean sample of massive stars in the solar neighbourhood with a high degree of completeness. We analyze the resulting colour-absolute magnitude diagram to divide our sample into categories and compare extinction estimates from two sources, finding problems with both of them. The distances obtained with three different priors are found to have few differences among them, indicating that Gaia DR2 distances are robust. An analysis of the 3-D distribution of massive stars in the solar neighbourhood is presented. We show that a kinematically distinct structure we dub the Cepheus spur extends from the Orion-Cygnus spiral arm towards the Perseus arm and is located above the Galactic mid-plane, likely being related to the recently discovered Radcliffe wave. We propose that this corrugation pattern in the Galactic disk may be responsible for the recent enhanced star formation at its crests and troughs. CONTEXT. Gaia EDR3 has produced parallaxes for 1.468x10^9 sources but there are calibration issues that require corrections to the published values and uncertainties. AIMS. We want to characterize the behavior of the uncertainties of the Gaia EDR3 parallaxes. We also aim to provide a procedure for the calculation of distances to stars and stellar clusters. METHODS. We reanalyze some of the data in the calibration papers for QSO and LMC parallaxes and combine those results with measurements for six bright GCs. We calculate the angular covariance of EDR3 parallaxes at small separations based on the LMC results and combine it with the results for larger angles using QSOs to obtain an analytical formula for the angular covariance over the whole sky. The results for the six GCs are used to validate the parallax bias correction as a function of magnitude, color, and ecliptic latitude and to determine the constant used to convert internal uncertainties to external ones. RESULTS. The angular covariance at zero separation is 106.2 muas^2, yielding a minimum uncertainty for EDR3 parallaxes of 10.3 muas for individual stars. That value can be only slightly reduced for GCs after considering the behavior of the angular covariance of the parallaxes for small separations. The Lindegren et al. parallax bias correction works quite well, except for the brighter magnitudes, suggesting improvements may be possible there. The value of k is 1.1-1.7 and depends on G. Stars with moderately large values of RUWE can still provide useful parallaxes albeit with larger values of k. We give accurate and precise Gaia EDR3 distances to the six GCs and for the specific case of 47 Tuc we are able to beat the angular covariance limit and derive a high-precision distance of 4.53+-0.06 kpc. Finally, a recipe for the derivation of distances to stars and stellar clusters using Gaia EDR3 parallaxes is given. [ABRIDGED], Comment: Version accepted in A&A

CONTEXT. Many massive stars have nearby companions whose presence hamper their characterization through spectroscopy. AIMS. We want to continue obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopy of close massive visual binaries to derive their spectral types. METHODS. We have used lucky spectroscopy to obtain many short long-slit spectroscopic exposures of 19 close visual binaries under good seeing conditions. We selected those with the best characteristics, extracted the spectra using multiple-profile fitting, and combined the results to derive spatially separated spectra. The results are analyzed in combination with data from lucky imaging, regular intermediate-resolution single-order spectroscopy, and \'echelle high-resolution spectroscopy. RESULTS. The new application of lucky spectroscopy has allowed us to [a] spatially disentangle for the first time two O stars (FN CMa B and 6 Cas B) with brighter BA supergiant companions; [b] determine that two B stars (alpha Sco B and HD 164492 B) with close and more massive companions are fast rotators; [c] extend the technique to cases with extreme magnitude differences, shorter separations, and fainter primary magnitudes down to B=11; [d] spatially disentangle the spectra of stars with companions as diverse as an A supergiant (6 Cas A), a WR star (WR 157), and an M supergiant (alpha Sco A); [e] discover the unexpected identity of some targets such as two previously unknown bright O stars (HD 51756 B and BD +60 544) and a new member of the rare OC category (HD 8768 A); and [f] identify and classify which of the components of four visual binaries is a double-lined spectroscopic binary and for another seven systems detect signs of spectroscopic binarity using high-spectral-resolution spectroscopy. CONTEXT. The GOSSS spectral classifications and Gaia data have significantly improved our ability to measure distances and determine memberships of stellar groups with OB stars. AIMS. We have started a program to identify, measure distances, and determine the membership of Galactic stellar groups with OB stars. We start with the identification and distance determinations of groups with O stars. In this paper we concentrate on groups that contain stars with the earliest spectral subtypes. METHODS. We use GOSSS to select Galactic stellar groups with O2-O3.5 stars and a method that combines Gaia DR2 photometry, positions, proper motions, and parallaxes to assign robust memberships and measure distances. We also include the two clusters in that paper to generate our first list of 16 O-type Galactic stellar groups. RESULTS. We derive distances, determine the membership, and analyze the structure of sixteen Galactic stellar groups with O stars, Villafranca O-001 to O-016, including the 14 groups with the earliest-O-type optically-accessible stars known in the Milky Way. We compare our distance with previous results and establish that the best consistency is with VLBI parallaxes and the worst is with kinematic distances. Our results indicate that massive stars can form in relatively low-mass clusters or even in near-isolation, as is the case for the Bajamar star in the North America nebula. This lends support to the hierarchical scenario of star formation, where some stars are born in well-defined bound clusters but others are born in associations that are unbound from the beginning: groups of newborn stars come in many shapes and sizes. We propose that HD 64 568 and HD 64 315 AB could have been ejected simultaneously from Villafranca O-012 S. Our results are consistent with a difference of approx. 20 microas in the Gaia DR2 parallax zero point between bright and faint stars. (ABRIDGED), Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Cygnus OB2 provides a unique insight into the high-mass stellar content in one of the largest groups of young massive stars in our Galaxy. Although several studies of its massive population have been carried out over the last decades, an extensive spectroscopic study of the whole known O-star population in the association is still lacking. In this work, we created the most complete spectroscopic census of O stars carried out so far in Cygnus OB2 using already existing and new spectroscopy. We present the spectra for 78 O-type stars, from which we identify new binary systems, obtain the distribution of rotational velocities, and determine the main stellar parameters for all the stars in the region that have not been detected as double-line spectroscopic binaries. We also derive radii, luminosities, and masses for those stars with reliable Gaia astrometry, in addition to creating the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram to interpret the evolutionary status of the association. This work has shown the improvement reached when using accurate spectroscopic parameters and astrometry for the interpretation of the evolutionary status of a population, revealing, in the case of Cygnus OB2, at least two star-forming bursts at $\sim$3 and $\sim$5 Myr. We find an apparent deficit of very fast rotators in the distribution of rotational velocities. The inspection of the dynamical distribution of the sample has allowed us to identify nine O stars with peculiar proper motions and discuss a possible dynamical ejection scenario or past supernova explosions in the region., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 25 pages, 11 figures

We have detected a broad interstellar absorption band centred close to 7700 \r{A} and with a FWHM of 176.6$\pm$3.9 \r{A}. This is the first such absorption band detected in the optical range and is significantly wider than the numerous diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). It remained undiscovered until now because it is partially hidden behind the A telluric band produced by O$_2$. The band was discovered using STIS@HST spectra and later detected in a large sample of stars of diverse type (OB stars, BA supergiants, red giants) using further STIS and ground-based spectroscopy. The EW of the band is measured and compared with our extinction and K I $\lambda\lambda$7667.021,7701.093 measurements for the same sample. The carrier is ubiquitous in the diffuse and translucent Galactic ISM but is depleted in the environment around OB stars. In particular, it appears to be absent or nearly so in sightlines rich in molecular carbon. This behaviour is similar to that of the $\sigma$-type DIBs, which originate in the low/intermediate-density UV-exposed ISM but are depleted in the high-density UV-shielded molecular clouds. We have started an ambitious program to determine if the full diversity of extinction laws is real or if some of it is due to calibration or methodological issues. Here we start by analyzing the information on NIR extinction in a 2MASS stellar sample with good quality photometry and very red colours. We calculate the extinction at 1 $\mu$m, $A_1$, and the power-law exponent, $\alpha$ ($A_\lambda = A_1 \lambda^{-\alpha}$), for the 2MASS stars located in the extinction trajectory in the $H-K$ vs. $J-H$ plane expected for red giants with $A_1 > 5$ mag. We test the validity of the assumption about the nature of those stars, whether a single or multiple values of $\alpha$ are needed, and the spatial variations of the results. Most ($\sim$83%) of those stars can indeed be explained by high-extinction red giants and the rest is composed of extinguished AGB stars (mostly O-rich), blended sources, and smaller numbers of other objects, a contaminant fraction that can be reduced with the help of Gaia} DR2 data. Galactic red giants experience a NIR extinction with $\alpha\sim 2.27$ and an uncertainty of a few hundredths of a magnitude. There is no significant spread in $\alpha$ even though our sample is widely distributed and has a broad range of extinctions. Differences with previous results are ascribed to the treatment of non-linear photometric effects and/or the contaminant correction. Future research should concentrate in finding the correct functional form for the NIR extinction law. We conducted an observational campaign towards one of the most massive and luminous colliding wind binaries in the Galaxy, HD~93129A, close to its periastron passage in 2018. During this time the source was predicted to be in its maximum of high-energy emission. Here we present our data analysis from the X-ray satellites \textit{Chandra} and \textit{NuSTAR} and the $\gamma$-ray satellite \textit{AGILE}. High-energy emission coincident with HD~93129A was detected in the X-ray band up to $\sim$18~keV, whereas in the $\gamma$-ray band only upper limits were obtained. We interpret the derived fluxes using a non-thermal radiative model for the wind-collision region. We establish a conservative upper limit for the fraction of the wind kinetic power that is converted into relativistic electron acceleration, $f_\mathrm{NT,e} < 0.02$. In addition, we set a lower limit for the magnetic field in the wind-collision region as $B_\mathrm{WCR} > 0.3$~G. We also argue a putative interpretation of the emission from which we estimate $f_\mathrm{NT,e} \approx 0.006$ and $B_\mathrm{WCR} \approx 0.5$~G. We conclude that multi-wavelength, dedicated observing campaigns during carefully selected epochs are a powerful tool for characterising the relativistic particle content and magnetic field intensity in colliding wind binaries., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

CONTEXT. Many O-type stars have nearby companions whose presence hamper their characterization through spectroscopy. AIMS. We want to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy of close O-type visual binaries to derive their spectral types. METHODS. We use the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to obtain long-slit blue-violet spectroscopy of eight Galactic O-type stars with nearby visual companions and use spatial-profile fitting to extract the separate spectra. We also use the ground-based Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey (GOSSS) to study more distant visual components. RESULTS. We spatially resolve seven of the eight systems, present spectra for their components, and obtain their spectral types. Those seven multiple systems are iota Ori Aa,Ab,B, 15 Mon Aa,Ab,C, tau CMa Aa,Ab,B,C,D,E, HD 206 267 Aa,Ab,C,D, HD 193 443 A,B, HD 16 429 Aa,Ab, and IU Aur A,B. This is the first time that spatially resolved spectroscopy of the close visual binaries of those systems is obtained. Binary systems composed of a red supergiant and a B star are useful probes of stellar evolution. We have searched the literature to create a catalog of 108 Galactic systems of such type, which is presented here., Comment: Table with 108 objects included

LB-1 has recently been proposed to be a binary system at 4 kpc consisting of a B star of 8 Msol and a massive stellar black hole of 70 Msol. This finding challenges our current theories of massive star evolution and formation of BHs at solar metallicity. Our objective is to derive the effective temperature, surface gravity and chemical composition of the B-type component in order to determine its nature and evolutionary status and, indirectly, to constrain the mass of the BH. We use the non-LTE stellar atmosphere code FASTWIND to analyse new and archival high resolution data. We determine (Teff, logg) values of (14000$\pm500$ K, 3.50$\pm0.15$ dex) that, combined with the Gaia parallax, implies a spectroscopic mass, from logg, of $3.2^{+2.1}_{-1.9}$ Msol and an evolutionary mass, assuming single star evolution, of $5.2^{+0.3}_{-0.6}$ Msol. We determine an upper limit of 8 km/s for the projected rotational velocity and derive the surface abundances, finding the star to have a silicon abundance below solar, to be significantly enhanced in nitrogen and iron, and depleted in carbon and magnesium. Complementary evidence derived from a photometric extinction analysis and Gaia yields similar results for Teff and logg and a consistent distance around 2~kpc. We propose that the B star is a slightly evolved main sequence star of 3-5 Msol with surface abundances reminiscent of diffusion in late B/A chemically peculiar stars with low rotational velocities. There is also evidence for CN-processed material in its atmosphere. These conclusions rely critically on the distance inferred from the Gaia parallax. The goodness of fit of the Gaia astrometry also favours a high-inclination orbit. If the orbit is edge-on and the B star has a mass of 3-5 Msol, the mass of the dark companion would be 4-5 Msol, which would be easier to explain with our current stellar evolutionary models., Comment: Accepted for publiction in A&A on 2020/01/08

[ABRIDGED] CONTEXT: Gaia DR2 has opened a trove of astrometric and photometric data for Galactic clusters close to the Sun. Lucky imaging has been an operational technique to measure the positions of visual binary systems for a decade and a half, enough to apply its results to the calculation of orbits of some massive multiple systems within ~1 kpc of the Sun. AIMS: We are measuring distances to Galactic stellar groups containing O stars and I start with two of them: Collinder 419 in Cygnus and NGC 2264 in Monoceros. I also aim to derive new astrometric orbits for the Aa,Ab components for the main ionizing sources for both clusters: HD 193 322 and 15 Mon, respectively. METHODS: First, I present a method that uses Gaia DR2 photometry, positions, proper motions, and parallaxes to obtain the membership and distance of a stellar group and apply it to Collinder 419 and NGC 2264. Second, I present a new code that calculates astrometric orbits by searching the whole 7-parameter orbit space and apply it to HD 193 322 Aa,Ab and 15 Mon Aa,Ab using as input literature data from the Washington Double Star Catalog (WDS) and the AstraLux measurements recently presented by Ma\'iz Apell\'aniz et al. (2019). RESULTS: I obtain Gaia DR2 distances of 1006+37-34 pc for Collinder 419 and 719+-16 pc for NGC 2264, with the main contribution to the uncertainties coming from the spatial covariance of the parallaxes. The two NGC 2264 subclusters are at the same distance (within the uncertainties) and they show a significant relative proper motion. The distances are shown to be robust. HD 193 322 Aa,Ab follows an eccentric (e = 0.58+0.03-0.04) orbit with a period of 44+-1 a and the three stars it contains have a total mass of 76.1+9.9-7.4 M_Sol. The orbit of 15 Mon Aa,Ab is even more eccentric (e = 0.770+0.023-0.030), with a period of 108+-12 a and a total mass of 45.1+3.6-3.3 M_Sol for its two stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present the photometric calibration of the twelve optical passbands observed by the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS). The proposed calibration method has four steps: (i) definition of a high-quality set of calibration stars using Gaia information and available 3D dust maps; (ii) anchoring of the J-PLUS gri passbands to the Pan-STARRS photometric solution, accounting for the variation of the calibration with the position of the sources on the CCD; (iii) homogenization of the photometry in the other nine J-PLUS filters using the dust de-reddened instrumental stellar locus in (X - r) versus (g - i) colours, where X is the filter to calibrate. The zero point variation along the CCD in these filters was estimated with the distance to the stellar locus. Finally, (iv) the absolute colour calibration was obtained with the white dwarf locus. We performed a joint Bayesian modelling of eleven J-PLUS colour-colour diagrams using the theoretical white dwarf locus as reference. This provides the needed offsets to transform instrumental magnitudes to calibrated magnitudes outside the atmosphere. The uncertainty of the J-PLUS photometric calibration, estimated from duplicated objects observed in adjacent pointings and accounting for the absolute colour and flux calibration errors, are ~19 mmag in u, J0378 and J0395, ~11 mmag in J0410 and J0430, and ~8 mmag in g, J0515, r, J0660, i, J0861, and z. We present an optimized calibration method for the large area multi-filter J-PLUS project, reaching 1-2% accuracy within an area of 1 022 square degrees without the need for long observing calibration campaigns or constant atmospheric monitoring. [ABRIDGED] AIMS. MONOS is collecting information and studying O-type spectroscopic binaries with delta > -20 deg. In this 1st paper we describe the sample and provide spectral classifications and additional information for objects with previous SB or EB orbits. In the future we will test the validity of previous solutions and calculate new SB orbits. METHODS.The spectra in this paper have 2 sources: GOSSS, which is obtaining blue-violet R~2500 spectroscopy of thousands of massive stars, and LiLiMaRlin, a library of libraries of high-resolution spectroscopy of massive stars obtained from 4 different surveys and additional data from our own observing programs and public archives. We also use lucky images from AstraLux. RESULTS. We present homogeneous spectral classifications for 92 O-type spectroscopic multiple systems and 10 optical companions. We discuss the visual multiplicity of each system with the support of AstraLux images and additional sources. For 11 O-type objects and for 6 B-type objects we present their first GOSSS spectral classifications. For 2 known EBs we detect SB2/SB1 lines for the first time, to which we add a third system already reported by us recently. For 2 previous SB1 systems we detect their SB2 nature for the first time and give their first separate spectral classifications, something we also do for a 3rd object just recently identified as a SB2. We also detect 9 new astrometric companions and provide updated information on several others. For sigma Ori AaAbB we provide spectral classifications for the 3 components with a single observation for the first time thanks to a lucky spectroscopy observation obtained close to the Aa,Ab periastron and for theta^1 Ori CaCb we add it to the class of Galactic Of?p stars, raising the number of its members to 6. This paper describes the characterization of the GALANTE photometric system, a seven intermediate- and narrow-band filter system with a wavelength coverage from 3000 $\r{A}$ to 9000 $\r{A}$ . We describe the photometric system presenting the full sensitivity curve as a product of the filter sensitivity, CCD, telescope mirror, and atmospheric transmission curves, as well as some first- and second-order moments of this sensitivity function. The GALANTE photometric system is composed of four filters from the J-PLUS photometric system, a twelve broad-to-narrow filter system, and three exclusive filters, specifically designed to measure the physical parameters of stars such as effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$, $\log(g)$, metallicity, colour excess $E(4405-5495)$, and extinction type $R_{5495}$. Two libraries, the Next Generation Spectral Library (NGSL) and the one presented in Ma\'iz Apell\'aniz & Weiler (2018), have been used to determine the transformation equations between the Sloan Digital Sky Survey ($\textit{SDSS}$) $\textit{ugriz}$ photometry and the GALANTE photometric system. We will use this transformation to calibrate the zero points of GALANTE images. To this end, a preliminary photometric calibration of GALANTE has been made based on two different $\textit{griz}$ libraries ($\textit{SDSS}$ DR12 and ATLAS All-Sky Stellar Reference Catalog, hereinafter $\textit{RefCat2}$). A comparison between both zero points is performed leading us to the choice of $\textit{RefCat2}$ as the base catalogue for this calibration, and applied to a field in the Cyg OB2 association., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

In this paper, we present high-resolution HST/COS observations of the extreme magnetic O star NGC 1624-2. These represent the first ultraviolet spectra of this archetypal object. We examine the variability of its wind-sensitive resonance lines, comparing it to that of other known magnetic O stars. In particular, the observed variations in the profiles of the CIV and SiIV doublets between low state and high state are the largest observed in any magnetic O-type star, consistent with the expected properties of NGC 1624-2's magnetosphere. We also observe a redshifted absorption component in the low state, a feature not seen in most stars. We present preliminary modelling efforts based on the Analytic Dynamical Magnetosphere (ADM) formalism, demonstrating the necessity of using non-spherically symmetric models to determine wind/magnetospheric properties of magnetic O stars., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS (23 November 2018)

GALANTE is an optical photometric survey with seven intermediate/narrow filters that has been covering the Galactic Plane since 2016 using the Javalambre T80 and Cerro Tololo T80S telescopes. The P.I.s of the northern part (GALANTE NORTE) are Emilio J. Alfaro and Jes\'us Ma\'iz Apell\'aniz. and the P.I. of the southern part (GALANTE SUR) is Rodolfo H. Barb\'a. The detector has a continuous 1.4 degr x 1.4 degr field of view with a sampling of 0.55"/pixel and the seven filters are optimized to detect obscured early-type stars. The survey includes long, intermediate, short, and ultrashort exposure times to reach a dynamical range close to 20 magnitudes, something never achieved for such an optical project before. The characteristics of GALANTE allow for a new type of calibration scheme using external Gaia, Tycho-2, and 2MASS data that has already led to a reanalysis of the sensitivity of the Gaia G filter. We describe the project and present some early results. GALANTE will identify the majority of the early-type massive stars within several kpc of the Sun and measure their amount and type of extinction. We present results on two different Gaia-related topics. First, we describe our efforts to calibrate the three Gaia photometric passbands G, G_BP, and G_RP. We have built a new spectrophotometric HST/STIS library and used it to derive new sensitivity curves and zero points for the three bands, including recipes on how to correct some cases. LiLiMaRlin is a library of libraries of massive-star high-resolution optical spectra built by collecting data from [a] our spectroscopic surveys (OWN, IACOB. NoMaDS, and CAF\'E-BEANS) and programs and [b] searches in public archives. The current version has 18 077 spectra of 1665 stars obtained with seven different telescopes (HET 9.2 m, NOT 2.56 m, CAHA 2.2 m, MPG/ESO 2.2 m, OHP 1.93 m, Mercator 1.2 m, and Stella 1.2 m). All the spectra have been filtered to eliminate misidentifications and bad-quality ones, uniformly reprocessed, and placed on a common format. We present applications of this library of libraries to the analysis of spectroscopic binaries (OWN and MONOS, see poster by E. Trigueros P\'aez at this meeting) and the study of the interstellar medium (CollDIBs). CONTEXT: The second Gaia data release (DR2) took place on April 2018. DR2 included photometry for more than 1.3 10^9 sources in G, BP, and RP. Even though Gaia DR2 photometry is very precise, there are currently three alternative definitions of the sensitivity curves that show significative differences. AIMS: The aim of this paper is to improve the quality of the input calibration data to produce new compatible definitions of the three bands and to identify the reasons for the discrepancies between previous definitions. METHODS: We have searched the HST archive for STIS spectra with G430L+G750L data obtained with wide apertures and combined them with the CALSPEC library to produce a high quality SED library of 122 stars with a broad range of colors, including three very red stars. We have used it to compute new sensitivity curves for G, BP, and RP using a functional analytical formalism. RESULTS: The new curves are significantly better than the two previous attempts, REV and WEI. For G we confirm the existence of a systematic bias in magnitude and correct a color term present in REV. For BP we confirm the need to define two magnitude ranges with different sensitivity curves and measure the cut between them at G = 10.87 with a significant increase in precision. The new curves also fit the data better than either REV or WEI. For RP we obtain a sensitivity curve that better fits the STIS spectra and we find that the differences with previous attempts reside in a systematic effect between ground-based and HST spectral libraries. Additional evidence from color-color diagrams indicate that the new sensitivity curve is more accurate. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement in the accuracy of the sensitivity curves because of the current dearth of good-quality red calibrators: adding more to the sample should be a priority before Gaia data release 3 takes place., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, revised version with minor changes

CONTEXT. 2MASS is the reference survey in the NIR part of the spectrum given its whole-sky coverage, large dynamic range, and proven calibration uniformity. However, previous studies disagree in the value of the zero points (ZPs) for its three bands JHK at the hundredth of a magnitude level. The disagreement should become more noticeable now that Gaia provides whole-sky optical photometry calibrated below that level. AIMS. We want to establish the value of the 2MASS ZPs based on NICMOS/HST spectrophotometry of the CALSPEC standard stars and test it with the help of Gaia DR2 parallaxes. METHODS. We have computed the synthetic JHK photometry for a sample of stars using the HST CALSPEC spectroscopic standards and compared it with their 2MASS magnitudes to evaluate the ZPs. We have tested our results by analysing a sample of FGK dwarfs with excellent 2MASS photometry and accurate Gaia DR2 parallaxes.} RESULTS. The Vega ZPs for 2MASS J, H, and K are found to be -0.025$\pm$0.005 mag, 0.004$\pm$0.005 mag, and -0.015$\pm$0.005 mag, respectively. Farr and Mandel reanalyse our data, finding initial-mass-function slopes for high mass stars in 30 Doradus that agree with our results. However, their reanalysis appears to underpredict the observed number of massive stars. The 30 Doradus (30 Dor) nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the brightest HII region in the Local Group and a prototype starburst similar to those found in high redshift galaxies. It is thus a stepping stone to understand the complex formation processes of stars in starburst regions across the Universe. Here, we have studied the formation history of massive stars in 30 Dor using masses and ages derived for 452 mainly OB stars from the spectroscopic VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS). We find that stars of all ages and masses are scattered throughout 30 Dor. This is remarkable because it implies that massive stars either moved large distances or formed independently over the whole field of view in relative isolation. We find that both channels contribute to the 30 Dor massive star population. Massive star formation rapidly accelerated about 8 Myr ago, first forming stars in the field before giving birth to the stellar populations in NGC 2060 and NGC 2070. The R136 star cluster in NGC 2070 formed last and, since then, about 1 Myr ago, star formation seems to be diminished with some continuing in the surroundings of R136. Massive stars within a projected distance of 8 pc of R136 are not coeval but show an age range of up to 6 Myr. Our mass distributions are well populated up to $200\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$. The inferred IMF is shallower than a Salpeter-like IMF and appears to be the same across 30 Dor. By comparing our sample of stars to stellar models in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, we find evidence for missing physics in the models above $\log L/\mathrm{L}_\odot=6$ that is likely connected to enhanced wind mass loss for stars approaching the Eddington limit. CONTEXT.The first Gaia Data Release (DR1) significantly improved the previously available proper motions for the majority of the Tycho-2 stars. AIMS. We want to detect runaway stars using Gaia DR1 proper motions and compare our results with previous searches. METHODS. Runaway O stars and BA supergiants are detected using a 2-D proper-motion method. The sample is selected using Simbad, spectra from our GOSSS project, literature spectral types, and photometry processed using CHORIZOS. RESULTS. We detect 76 runaway stars, 17 (possibly 19) of them with no prior identification as such, with an estimated detection rate of approximately one half of the real runaway fraction. An age effect appears to be present, with objects of spectral subtype B1 and later having travelled for longer distances than runaways of earlier subtypes. We also tentatively propose that the fraction of runaways is lower among BA supergiants that among O stars but further studies using future Gaia data releases are needed to confirm this. The frequency of fast rotators is high among runaway O stars, which indicates that a significant fraction of them (and possibly a majority) is produced in supernova explosions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

J-PLUS is an ongoing 12-band photometric optical survey, observing thousands of square degrees of the Northern hemisphere from the dedicated JAST/T80 telescope at the Observatorio Astrof\'isico de Javalambre. T80Cam is a 2 sq.deg field-of-view camera mounted on this 83cm-diameter telescope, and is equipped with a unique system of filters spanning the entire optical range. This filter system is a combination of broad, medium and narrow-band filters, optimally designed to extract the rest-frame spectral features (the 3700-4000\AA\ Balmer break region, H$\delta$, Ca H+K, the G-band, the Mgb and Ca triplets) that are key to both characterize stellar types and to deliver a low-resolution photo-spectrum for each pixel of the sky observed. With a typical depth of AB $\sim 21.25$ mag per band, this filter set thus allows for an indiscriminate and accurate characterization of the stellar population in our Galaxy, it provides an unprecedented 2D photo-spectral information for all resolved galaxies in the local universe, as well as accurate photo-z estimates ($\Delta\,z\sim 0.01-0.03$) for moderately bright (up to $r\sim 20$ mag) extragalactic sources. While some narrow band filters are designed for the study of particular emission features ([OII]/$\lambda$3727, H$\alpha$/$\lambda$6563) up to $z < 0.015$, they also provide well-defined windows for the analysis of other emission lines at higher redshifts. As a result, J-PLUS has the potential to contribute to a wide range of fields in Astrophysics, both in the nearby universe (Milky Way, 2D IFU-like studies, stellar populations of nearby and moderate redshift galaxies, clusters of galaxies) and at high redshifts (ELGs at $z\approx 0.77, 2.2$ and $4.4$, QSOs, etc). With this paper, we release $\sim 36$ sq.deg of J-PLUS data, containing about $1.5\times 10^5$ stars and $10^5$ galaxies at $r<21$ mag., Comment: Submitted to A&A

CONTEXT: Many massive stars have nearby companions whose presence hamper their characterization through spectroscopy. AIMS: We want to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy of close massive visual binaries to derive their spectral types. METHODS: We obtain a large number of short long-slit spectroscopic exposures of five close binaries under good seeing conditions, select those with the best characteristics, extract the spectra using multiple-profile fitting, and combine the results to derive spatially separated spectra. RESULTS: We demonstrate the usefulness of Lucky Spectroscopy by presenting the spatially resolved spectra of the components of each system, in two cases with separations of only ~0.3". Those are delta Ori Aa+Ab (resolved in the optical for the first time) and sigma Ori AaAb+B (first time ever resolved). We also spatially resolve 15 Mon AaAb+B, zeta Ori AaAb+B (both previously resolved with GOSSS, the Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey), and eta Ori AaAb+B, a system with two spectroscopic B+B binaries and a fifth visual component. The systems have in common that they are composed of an inner pair of slow rotators orbited by one or more fast rotators, a characteristic that could have consequences for the theories of massive star formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 7 pages
