Due to their short orbital periods and relatively high flux ratios, irradiated brown dwarfs in binaries with white dwarfs offer better opportunities to study irradiated atmospheres than hot Jupiters, which have lower planet-to-star flux ratios. WD1032+011 is an eclipsing, tidally locked white dwarf-brown dwarf binary with a 9950 K white dwarf orbited by a 69.7 M$_{Jup}$ brown dwarf in a 0.09 day orbit. We present time-resolved Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 spectrophotometric data of WD1032+011. We isolate the phase-dependent spectra of WD1032+011B, finding a 210 K difference in brightness temperature between the dayside and nightside. The spectral type of the brown dwarf is identified as L1 peculiar, with atmospheric retrievals and comparison to field brown dwarfs showing evidence for a cloud-free atmosphere. The retrieved temperature of the dayside is $1748^{+66}_{-67}$ K, with a nightside temperature of $1555^{+76}_{-62}$ K, showing an irradiation-driven temperature contrast coupled with inefficient heat redistribution from the dayside to the nightside. The brown dwarf radius is inflated, likely due to the constant irradiation from the white dwarf, making it the only known inflated brown dwarf in an eclipsing white dwarf-brown dwarf binary., Comment: 20 pages, 23 figures. We apply multi-algorithm machine learning models to TESS 2-minute survey data from Sectors 1-72 to identify stellar flares. Models trained with Deep Neural Network, Random Forest, and XGBoost algorithms, respectively, utilized four flare light curve characteristics as input features. Model performance is evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics, all exceeding 94%. Validation against previously reported TESS M dwarf flare identifications showed that our models successfully recovered over 92% of the flares while detecting $\sim2,000$ more small events, thus extending the detection sensitivity of previous work. After processing 1.3 million light curves, our models identified nearly 18,000 flare stars and 250,000 flares. We present an extensive catalog documenting both flare and stellar properties. We find strong correlations in total flare energy and flare amplitude with color, in agreement with previous studies. Flare frequency distributions are analyzed, refining power-law slopes for flare behavior with the frequency uncertainties due to the detection incompleteness of low-amplitude events. We determine rotation periods for $\sim120,000$ stars thus yielding the relationship between rotation period and flare activity. We find that the transition in rotation period between the saturated and unsaturated regimes in flare energy coincides with the same transition in rotation period separating the saturated and unsaturated levels in coronal X-ray emission. We find that X-ray emission increases more rapidly with flare luminosity in earlier-type and unsaturated stars, indicating more efficient coronal heating in these objects. Beta Pictoris (Beta Pic)'s well-studied debris disk and two known giant planets, in combination with the stability of HST/STIS (and now also JWST), offers a unique opportunity to test planet-disk interaction models and to observe recent planetesimal collisions. We present HST/STIS coronagraphic imaging from two new epochs of data taken between 2021 and 2023, complementing earlier data taken in 1997 and 2012. This dataset enables the longest baseline and highest precision temporal comparison of any debris disk to date, with sensitivity to temporal surface brightness variations of sub-percentage levels in the midplane of the disk. While no localized surface brightness changes are detected, which would be indicative of a recent planetesimal collision, there is a tentative brightening of the SE side of the disk over the past decade. We link the constraints on surface brightness variations to dynamical models of the planetary system's evolution and to the collisional history of planetesimals. Using a coupled collisional model and injection/recovery framework, we estimate sensitivity to expanding collisional debris down to a Ceres-mass per progenitor in the most sensitive regions of the disk midplane. These results demonstrate the capabilities of long-baseline, temporal studies with HST (and also soon with JWST) for constraining the physical processes occurring within debris disks., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. Atmospheres are not spatially homogeneous. This is particularly true for hot, tidally locked exoplanets with large day-to-night temperature variations, which can yield significant differences between the morning and evening terminators -- known as limb asymmetry. Current transit observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) are precise enough to disentangle the separate contributions of these morning and evening limbs to the overall transmission spectrum in certain circumstances. However, the signature of limb asymmetry in a transit light curve is highly degenerate with uncertainty in the planet's time of conjunction. This raises the question of how precisely transit times must be measured to enable accurate studies of limb asymmetry, particularly with JWST. Although this degeneracy has been discussed in the literature, a general description of it has not been presented. In this work, we show how this degeneracy results from apparent changes in the transit contact times when the planetary disk has asymmetric limb sizes. We derive a general formula relating the magnitude of limb asymmetry to the amount which it would cause the apparent time of conjunction to vary, which can reach tens of seconds. Comparing our formula to simulated observations, we find that numerical fitting techniques add additional bias to the measured time, of generally less than a second, resulting from the occultation geometry. We also derive an analytical formula for this extra numerical bias. The high contrast and spatial resolution requirements for directly imaging exoplanets requires effective coordination of wavefront control, coronagraphy, observation techniques, and post-processing algorithms. However, even with this suite of tools, identifying and retrieving exoplanet signals embedded in resolved scattered light regions can be extremely challenging due to the increased noise from scattered light off the circumstellar disk and the potential misinterpretation of the true nature of the detected signal. This issue pertains not only to imaging terrestrial planets in habitable zones within zodiacal and exozodiacal emission but also to young planets embedded in circumstellar, transitional, and debris disks. This is particularly true for H{\alpha} detection of exoplanets in transitional disks. This work delves into recent H{\alpha} observations of three transitional disks systems with MagAO-X, an extreme adaptive optics system for the 6.5-meter Magellan Clay telescope. We employed angular differential imaging (ADI) and simultaneous spectral differential imaging (SSDI) in combination with KLIP, a PCA algorithm in post-processing, for optimal starlight suppression and quasi-static noise removal. We discuss the challenges in protoplanet identification with MagAO-X in environments rich with scattered and reflected light from disk structures and explore a potential solution for removing noise contributions from real astronomical objects with current observation and post-processing techniques.

Long wavelength infrared (8-13 $\mu$m) spectroscopy is invaluable for detecting molecular features in the atmospheres of gas giant and terrestrial exoplanets. The nulling-optimized mid-infrared camera (NOMIC) on the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI) has a low resolution (R$\sim$200) germanium grism that was previously installed but has not been characterized and commissioned for scientific observations. Using a 1.27 mm slit and broadband filter in combination with the grism, the infrared window between 8-13 $\mu$m can be captured. We describe initial on sky testing of the LBTI/NOMIC grism mode with adaptive optics to study standard stars and binaries. We discuss the impact of observational strategy and telluric calibration on the spectral reduction process. We infer the impact of existing mid-infrared detectors on NOMIC's spectroscopic mode and discuss requirements to enable higher resolution 8-13 $\mu$m spectroscopy on current and future facilities., Comment: SPIE Proceedings 13096-224

Terrestrial planets in the Habitable Zone of Sun-like stars are priority targets for detection and observation by the next generation of powerful space telescopes. Earth's long-term habitability may have been tied to the geological carbon cycle, a process critically facilitated by plate tectonics. In the modern Earth, plate motion corresponds to a mantle convection regime called mobile-lid. The alternate, stagnant-lid regime is found on Mars and Venus, which may have lacked strong enough weathering feedbacks to sustain surface liquid water over geological timescales if initially present. Constraining observational strategies able to infer the most common regime in terrestrial exoplanets requires quantitative predictions of the atmospheric composition of planets in either regime. We use endmember models of volcanic outgassing and crust weathering for the stagnant- and mobile-lid convection regimes, that we couple to models of atmospheric chemistry and climate, and ocean chemistry to simulate the atmospheric evolution of these worlds in the Habitable Zone. In our simulations under the two alternate regimes, we find that the fraction of planets possessing climates consistent with surface liquid water differ by less than 10%. Despite this unexpectedly small difference, we predict that a mission capable of detecting atmospheric CO$_2$ abundance above 0.01 bar in 25 terrestrial exoplanets is extremely likely ($\geq 95$% of samples) to infer the dominant interior convection regime in that sample with strong evidence (10:1 odds). Biosignature detection in the atmospheres of Earth-like exoplanets is one of the most significant and ambitious goals for astronomy, astrobiology, and humanity. Molecular oxygen is among the strongest indicators of life on Earth, but it will be extremely difficult to detect via transmission spectroscopy. We used the Bioverse statistical framework to assess the ability to probe Earth-like O$_{\mathrm{2}}$ levels on hypothetical nearby habitable zone exoplanets (EECs) using direct imaging and high-resolution spectroscopy on the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) and the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). We found that O$_{\mathrm{2}}$ could be probed on up to $\sim$5 and $\sim$15 EECs orbiting bright M dwarfs within 20 pc in a 10-year survey on the GMT and ELT, respectively. Earth-like O$_{\mathrm{2}}$ levels could be probed on four known super-Earth candidates, including Proxima Centauri b, within about one week on the ELT and a few months on the GMT. We also assessed the ability of the ELT to test the habitable zone oxygen hypothesis $\unicode{x2013}$ that habitable zone Earth-sized planets are more likely to have O$_{\mathrm{2}}$ $\unicode{x2013}$ within a 10-year survey using Bioverse. Testing this hypothesis requires either $\sim$1/2 of the EECs to have O$_{\mathrm{2}}$ or $\sim$1/3 if $\eta_{\oplus}$ is large. A northern hemisphere large-aperture telescope, such as the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), would expand the target star pool by about 25%, reduce the time to probe biosignatures on individual targets, and provide an additional independent check on potential biosignature detections., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. Globular clusters contain vast repositories of metal-poor stars that represent some of the oldest stellar generations in the Universe. The archaeological footprint of early Galactic evolution may be retained in the measurable properties of globular clusters, such as their ages, mass functions and chemical abundances. Until recently, all photometric studies of globular clusters were restricted to stellar members. Now, the sensitivity of JWST can extend this analysis to the substellar regime. If detected in sufficient numbers, brown dwarf members can provide tight constraints on the properties of their parent population. We present SANDee - a new grid of stellar models that accurately represent the color-magnitude diagrams of globular clusters across the hydrogen-burning limit at a wide range of metallicities. Using JWST NIRCam photometry and the new models, we identify three brown dwarfs in the globular cluster NGC 6397 with effective temperatures of 1300-1800 K, confirmed by both proper motion and model fitting. We use the observed luminosities of discovered brown dwarfs to obtain the first age estimate of a globular cluster from its substellar cooling sequence: 13.4 +/- 3.3 Gyr. We also derive the local mass function of the cluster across the hydrogen-burning limit and find it to be top-heavy, suggesting extensive dynamical evolution. We present an atmospheric retrieval analysis of HST/WFC3/G141 spectroscopic phase curve observations of two brown dwarfs, WD-0137B and EPIC-2122B, in ultra-short period orbits around white dwarf hosts. These systems are analogous to hot and ultra-hot Jupiter systems, enabling a unique and high-precision comparison to exoplanet systems. We use the PETRA retrieval suite to test various analysis setups, including joint-phase retrievals, multiple temperature structures, and non-uniform abundances. We find that WD-0137B has a dayside that closely resembles that of other ultra-hot Jupiters with inverted temperature structures and H$^-$ opacity, but quickly transitions to a mostly non-inverted temperature structure on the nightside. Meanwhile, EPIC-2122B's atmosphere remains inverted at all constrained longitudes, with dominant H$^-$ opacity. Retrievals with multiple temperature profiles and non-uniform vertical abundances were generally not statistically justified for this dataset, but retrievals with dayside-dilution factors were found to be justified. Retrieving all phases simultaneously with a linear combination of a dayside and nightside atmosphere was found to be an adequate representation of the entire phase-curve once a longitudinal temperature gradient free parameter was included in the retrieval. Comparing to global circulation models, we attribute behavior in the 1D retrievals to the inclined viewing geometry of the systems, which results in always-visible irradiated and inverted portions of the atmosphere "contaminating" spectra measured from the nightside hemisphere. This study sheds light on the similarities between these irradiated brown dwarf systems and hot and ultra-hot Jupiters, but also their unique differences, including the influence of the inclined viewing geometry., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables. Brown dwarfs in ultra-short period orbits around white dwarfs offer a unique opportunity to study the properties of tidally-locked, fast rotating (1-3 hr), and highly-irradiated atmospheres. Here, we present phase-resolved spectrophotometry of the white dwarf-brown dwarf (WD-BD) binary SDSS 1557, which is the fifth WD-BD binary in our six-object sample. Using the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 Near-infrared G141 instrument, the 1.1 to 1.7 $\mu$m phase curves show rotational modulations with semi-amplitudes of 10.5$\pm$0.1%. We observe a wavelength dependent amplitude, with longer wavelengths producing larger amplitudes, while no wavelength dependent phase shifts were identified. The phase-resolved extracted BD spectra exhibit steep slopes and are nearly featureless. A simple radiative energy redistribution atmospheric model recreates the hemisphere integrated brightness temperatures at three distinct phases and finds evidence for weak redistribution efficiency. Our model also predicts a higher inclination than previously published. We find that SDSS 1557B, the second most irradiated BD in our sample, is likely dominated by clouds on the night side, whereas the featureless day side spectrum is likely dominated by H$^-$ opacity and a temperature inversion, much like the other highly-irradiated BD EPIC2122B., Comment: 19 pages and 11 figures. In this work, we present the longest photometric monitoring of up to 1200 hours of the strongly variable brown-dwarf binaries Luhman 16 AB and provide evidence of $\pm$5% variability on a timescale of several-to-hundreds of hours for this object. We show that short-period rotational modulation around 5 hours (k = 1 wavenumber) and 2.5 hours (k = 2 wavenumber) dominate the variability under 10 hours, where the planetary-scale waves model composed of k = 1 and k = 2 waves provides good fits to both the periodogram and light curve. In particular, models consisting of three to four sine waves could explain the variability of light curve durations up to 100 hours. We show that the relative range of k = 2 periods is narrower compared to k = 1 period. Using simple models of zonal banding in Solar System giants, we suggest that the difference in period range arises from the difference in windspeed distribution at low and mid-to-high latitudes in the atmosphere. Lastly, we show that Luhman 16 AB also exhibits long-period $\pm$5% variability with periods ranging from 15 hours up to 100 hours over the longest monitoring of this object. Our results on k = 1 and k = 2 waves and long-period evolution are consistent with previous 3D atmosphere simulations, demonstrating that both latitude-dependent waves and slow-varying atmospheric features are potentially present in Luhman 16 AB atmospheres and are significant contribution to the light curve modulation over hundreds of rotations., Comment: 27 pages, 20 figures. The minimum orbital separation of planets in long-stable planetary systems is often modeled as a step function, parameterized with a single value $\Delta_{min}$ (measured in mutual Hill radius of the two neighboring planets). Systems with smaller separations are considered unstable, and planet pairs with greater separations are considered stable. Here we report that a log-normal distribution function for $\Delta_{min}$, rather than a single threshold value, provides a more accurate model. From our suite of simulated planetary systems, the parameters of the best-fit log-normal distribution are $\mu=1.97\pm0.02$ and $\sigma=0.40\pm0.02$, such that the mean, median, and mode of $\Delta_{min}$ are 7.77, 7.17, and 6.11, respectively. This result is consistent with previous estimates for $\Delta_{min}$ threshold values in the range $\sim$5$-$8. We find a modest dependence of the distribution of $\Delta_{min}$ on multiplicity within the system, as well as on planetary mass ratios of the closest planet pair. The overall distribution of nearest-neighbor planetary orbital spacings (measured in the mutual Hill radii and denoted simply as $\Delta$) in long-term stable systems is also well fit with a log-normal distribution, with parameters $\mu=3.14\pm0.03$ and $\sigma=0.76\pm0.02$. In simulations of sets of many planets initially packed very close together, we find that the orbital spacings of long-term stable systems is statistically similar to that in the observed Kepler sample of exo-planetary systems, indicating a strong role of sculpting of planetary architectures by dynamical instabilities., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted to AJ

Long-term magma ocean phases on rocky exoplanets orbiting closer to their star than the runaway greenhouse threshold - the inner edge of the classical habitable zone - may offer insights into the physical and chemical processes that distinguish potentially habitable worlds from others. Thermal stratification of runaway planets is expected to significantly inflate their atmospheres, potentially providing observational access to the runaway greenhouse transition in the form of a "habitable zone inner edge discontinuity" in radius-density space. Here, we use Bioverse, a statistical framework combining contextual information from the overall planet population with a survey simulator, to assess the ability of ground- and space-based telescopes to test this hypothesis. We find that the demographic imprint of the runaway greenhouse transition is likely detectable with high-precision transit photometry for sample sizes $\gtrsim 100$ planets if at least ~10 % of those orbiting closer than the habitable zone inner edge harbor runaway climates. Our survey simulations suggest that in the near future, ESA's PLATO mission will be the most promising survey to probe the habitable zone inner edge discontinuity. We determine survey strategies that maximize the diagnostic power of the obtained data and identify as key mission design drivers: 1. A follow-up campaign of planetary mass measurements and 2. The fraction of low-mass stars in the target sample. Understanding the driving forces behind spiral arms in protoplanetary disks remains a challenge due to the faintness of young giant planets. MWC 758 hosts such a protoplanetary disk with a two-armed spiral pattern that is suggested to be driven by an external giant planet. We present new thermal infrared observations that are uniquely sensitive to redder (i.e., colder or more attenuated) planets than past observations at shorter wavelengths. We detect a giant protoplanet, MWC 758c, at a projected separation of ~100 au from the star. The spectrum of MWC 758c is distinct from the rest of the disk and consistent with emission from a planetary atmosphere with Teff = 500 +/- 100 K for a low level of extinction (AV<30), or a hotter object with a higher level of extinction. Both scenarios are commensurate with the predicted properties of the companion responsible for driving the spiral arms. MWC 758c provides evidence that spiral arms in protoplanetary disks can be caused by cold giant planets or by those whose optical emission is highly attenuated. MWC 758c stands out both as one of the youngest giant planets known, and also as one of the coldest and/or most attenuated. Molecular oxygen is a strong indicator of life on Earth, and may indicate biological processes on exoplanets too. Recent studies proposed that Earth-like O$_\mathrm{2}$ levels might be detectable on nearby exoplanets using high-resolution spectrographs on future extremely large telescopes (ELTs). However, these studies did not consider constraints like relative velocities, planet occurrence rates, and target observability. We expanded on past studies by creating a homogeneous catalog of 286,391 main-sequence stars within 120 pc using Gaia DR3, and used the Bioverse framework to simulate the likelihood of finding nearby transiting Earth analogs. We also simulated a survey of M dwarfs within 20 pc accounting for $\eta_{\oplus}$ estimates, transit probabilities, relative velocities, and target observability to determine how long ELTs and theoretical 50-100 meter ground-based telescopes need to observe to probe for Earth-like O$_\mathrm{2}$ levels with an $R=100,000$ spectrograph. This would only be possible within 50 years for up to $\sim$21% of nearby M dwarf systems if a suitable transiting habitable zone Earth-analog was discovered, assuming signals from every observable partial transit from each ELT can be combined. If so, Earth-like O$_\mathrm{2}$ levels could be detectable on TRAPPIST-1 d-g within 16 to 55 years, respectively, and about half that time with an $R=500,000$ spectrograph. These results have important implications for whether ELTs can survey nearby habitable zone Earth analogs for O$_\mathrm{2}$ via transmission spectroscopy. With infrared flux contrasts larger than typically seen in hot Jupiter, tidally-locked white dwarf-brown dwarf binaries offer a superior opportunity to investigate atmospheric processes in irradiated atmospheres. NLTT5306 is such a system, with a M$_{BD}$ = 52 $\pm$ 3 M$_{Jup}$ brown dwarf orbiting a T$_{eff}$ = 7756 $\pm$ 35 K white dwarf with an ultra-short period of $\sim$102 min. We present HST/WFC3 spectroscopic phase curves of NLTT5306, consisting of 47 spectra from 1.1 to 1.7 microns with an average S/N=65 per wavelength. We extracted the phase-resolved spectra of the brown dwarf NLTT5306B, finding a small (<100 K) day/night temperature difference ($\sim$5 percent of the average day-side temperature). Our best-fit model phase curves revealed a complex wavelength-dependence on amplitudes and relative phase offsets, suggesting longitudinal-vertical atmospheric structure. The night-side spectrum was well-fit by a cloudy, non-irradiated atmospheric model while the day-side was best-matched by a cloudy, weakly irradiated model. Additionally, we created a simple radiative energy redistribution model of the atmosphere and found evidence for efficient day-to-night heat redistribution and a moderately high Bond albedo. We also discovered an internal heat flux much higher than expected given the published system age, leading to an age reassessment that resulted in NLTT5306B most likely being much younger. We find that NLTT5306B is the only known significantly irradiated brown dwarf where the global temperature structure is not dominated by external irradiation, but rather its own internal heat. Earth-sized exoplanets that transit nearby, late spectral type red dwarfs will be prime targets for atmospheric characterization in the coming decade. Such systems, however, are difficult to find via wide-field transit surveys like Kepler or TESS. Consequently, the presence of such transiting planets is unexplored and the occurrence rates of short-period Earth-sized planets around late M dwarfs remain poorly constrained. Here, we present the deepest photometric monitoring campaign of 22 nearby late M dwarf stars, using data from over 500 nights on seven 1-2 meter class telescopes. Our survey includes all known single quiescent northern late M dwarfs within 15 pc. We use transit-injection-and-recovery tests to quantify the completeness of our survey, successfully identify most ($>80\%$) transiting short-period (0.5-1 d) super-Earths ($R > 1.9 R_\oplus$), and are sensitive ($\sim50\%$) to transiting Earth-sized planets ($1.0-1.2 R_\oplus$). Our high sensitivity to transits with a near-zero false positive rate demonstrates an efficient survey strategy. Our survey does not yield a transiting planet detection, yet it provides the most sensitive upper limits on transiting planets orbiting our target stars. Finally, we explore multiple hypotheses about the occurrence rates of short-period planets (from Earth-sized planets to giant planets) around late M dwarfs. We show, for example, that giant planets at short periods ($<1$ day) are uncommon around our target stars. Our dataset provides some insight into occurrence rates of short-period planets around TRAPPIST-1-like stars, and our results can help test planetary formation and system evolution models, as well as guide future observations of nearby late M dwarfs., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures

Giant planets within the habitable zones of the closest several stars can currently be imaged with ground-based telescopes. Within the next decade, the Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) will begin to image the habitable zones of a greater number of nearby stars with much higher sensitivity$-$ potentially imaging exo-Earths around the closest stars. To determine the most promising candidates for observations over the next decade, we establish a theoretical framework for the direct detectability of Earth$-$ to super-Jovian-mass exoplanets in the mid-infrared based on available atmospheric and evolutionary models. Of the 83 closest BAFGK type stars, we select 37 FGK type stars within 10 pc and 34 BA type stars within 30 pc with reliable age constraints. We prioritize targets based on a parametric model of a planet's effective temperature based on a star's luminosity, distance, and age, and on the planet's orbital semi-major axis, radius, and albedo. We then predict the most likely planets to be detectable with current 8-meter telescopes and with a 39-m ELT with up to 100 hours of observation per star. Putting this together, we recommend observation times needed for the detection of habitable-zone exoplanets spanning the range of very nearby temperate Earth-sized planets to more distant young giant planets. Photometric and spectral variability of brown dwarfs probes heterogeneous temperature and cloud distribution and traces the atmospheric circulation patterns. We present a new 42-hr Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 G141 spectral time series of VHS 1256$-$1257 b, a late L-type planetary-mass companion that has been shown to have one of the highest variability amplitudes among substellar objects. The light curve is rapidly evolving and best-fit by a combination of three sine waves with different periods and a linear trend. The amplitudes of the sine waves and the linear slope vary with wavelength, and the corresponding spectral variability patterns match the predictions by models invoking either heterogeneous clouds or thermal profile anomalies. Combining these observations with previous HST monitoring data, we find that the peak-to-valley flux difference is $33\pm2$% with an even higher amplitude reaching 38% in the $J$ band, the highest amplitude ever observed in a substellar object. The observed light curve can be explained by maps that are composed of zonal waves, spots, or a mixture of the two. Distinguishing the origin of rapid light curve evolution requires additional long-term monitoring. The majority of brown dwarfs show some level of photometric or spectro-photometric variability in different wavelength ranges. This variability allow us to trace the 3D atmospheric structures of variable brown dwarfs and directly-imaged exoplanets with radiative-transfer models and mapping codes. Nevertheless, to date, we do not have an informed method to pre-select the brown dwarfs that might show a higher variability amplitude for a thorough variability study. In this work, we designed and tested near-infrared spectral indices to pre-select the most likely variable mid- and late-T dwarfs, which overlap in effective temperatures with directly-imaged exoplanets. We used time-resolved near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 spectra of a T6.5 dwarf, 2MASS J22282889--431026, to design our novel spectral indices. We tested these spectral indices on 26 T5.5--T7.5 near-infrared SpeX/IRTF spectra, and we provided eight new mid- and late-T variable candidates. We estimated the variability fraction of our sample in $38^{+4}_{-30}$%, which agrees with the variability fractions provided by Metchev, et. al, (2015) for mid-to late-T dwarfs. In addition, two of the three previously known variables in our SpeX spectra sample are flagged as variable candidates by our indices. Similarly, all seven known non-variable in our sample are flagged as non-variable objects by our indices. These results suggest that our spectral indices might be used to find variable mid- and late-T brown dwarf variables. We present a precise ground-based optical transmission spectrum of the hot-Saturn HATS-5b ($T_{eq} =1025$ K), obtained as part of the ACCESS survey with the IMACS multi-object spectrograph mounted on the Magellan/Baade Telescope. Our spectra cover the 0.5 to 0.9 micron region, and are the product of 5 individual transits observed between 2014 and 2018. We introduce the usage of additional second-order light in our analyses which allows us to extract an "extra" transit light curve, improving the overall precision of our combined transit spectrum. We find that the favored atmospheric model for this transmission spectrum is a solar-metallicity atmosphere with sub-solar C/O, whose features are dominated by H$_2$O and with a depleted abundance of Na and K. If confirmed, this would point to a "clear" atmosphere at the pressure levels probed by transmission spectroscopy for HATS-5b. Our best-fit atmospheric model predicts a rich near-IR spectrum, which makes this exoplanet an excellent target for future follow-up observations with the James Webb Space Telescope, both to confirm this H$_2$O detection and to superbly constrain the atmosphere's parameters., Comment: 31 pages, 16 figures, 7 tables. One of the strongest ${\rm Na~I}$ features was observed in WASP-96b. To confirm this novel detection, we provide a new 475-825nm transmission spectrum obtained with Magellan/IMACS, which indeed confirms the presence of a broad sodium absorption feature. We find the same result when reanalyzing the 400-825nm VLT/FORS2 data. We also utilize synthetic data to test the effectiveness of two common detrending techniques: (1) a Gaussian processes (GP) routine, and (2) common-mode correction followed by polynomial correction (CMC+Poly). We find that both methods poorly reproduce the absolute transit depths but maintain their true spectral shape. This emphasizes the importance of fitting for offsets when combining spectra from different sources or epochs. Additionally, we find that for our datasets both methods give consistent results, but CMC+Poly is more accurate and precise. We combine the Magellan/IMACS and VLT/FORS2 spectra with literature 800-1644nm HST/WFC3 spectra, yielding a global spectrum from 400-1644nm. We used the PLATON and Exoretrievals retrieval codes to interpret this spectrum, and find that both yield relatively deeper pressures where the atmosphere is optically thick at log-pressures between $1.3^{+1.0}_{-1.1}$ and 0.29$^{+1.86}_{-2.02}$ bars, respectively. Exoretrievals finds a solar to super-solar ${\rm Na~I}$ and ${\rm H_2O}$ log-mixing ratios of $-5.4^{+2.0}_{-1.9}$ and $-4.5^{+2.0}_{-2.0}$, respectively, while PLATON finds an overall metallicity of $log_{10}(Z/Z_{\odot}) = -0.49^{+1.0}_{-0.37}$dex. Therefore, our findings are in agreement with literature and support the inference that the terminator of WASP-96b has few aerosols obscuring prominent features in the optical to near-infrared (near-IR) spectrum., Comment: ACCEPT by AJ July 5th 2022

Technosignatures refer to observational manifestations of technology that could be detected through astronomical means. Most previous searches for technosignatures have focused on searches for radio signals, but many current and future observing facilities could also constrain the prevalence of some non-radio technosignatures. This search could thus benefit from broader participation by the astronomical community, as contributions to technosignature science can also take the form of negative results that provide statistically meaningful quantitative upper limits on the presence of a signal. This paper provides a synthesis of the recommendations of the 2020 TechnoClimes workshop, which was an online event intended to develop a research agenda to prioritize and guide future theoretical and observational studies technosignatures. The paper provides a high-level overview of the use of current and future missions to detect exoplanetary technosignatures at ultraviolet, optical, or infrared wavelengths, which specifically focuses on the detectability of atmospheric technosignatures, artificial surface modifications, optical beacons, space engineering and megastructures, and interstellar flight. This overview does not derive any new quantitative detection limits but is intended to provide additional science justification for the use of current and planned observing facilities as well as to inspire astronomers conducting such observations to consider the relevance of their ongoing observations to technosignature science. This synthesis also identifies possible technology gaps with the ability of current and planned missions to search for technosignatures, which suggests the need to consider technosignature science cases in the design of future mission concepts., Comment: Accepted for publication in Acta Astronautica

e Eridani, the fifth-closest Sun-like star, hosts at least three planets and could possibly harbor more. However, the veracity of the planet candidates in the system and its full planetary architecture remain unknown. Here we analyze the planetary architecture of e Eridani via DYNAMITE, a method providing an integrative assessment of the system architecture (and possibly yet-undetected planets) by combining statistical, exoplanet-population level knowledge with incomplete but specific information available on the system. DYNAMITE predicts the most likely location of an additional planet in the system based on the Kepler population demographic information from more than 2000 planets. Additionally, we analyze the dynamical stability of e Eridani system via N-body simulations. Our DYNAMITE and dynamical stability analyses provide support for planet candidates g, c, and f, and also predict one additional planet candidate with an orbital period between 549 -- 733 days, in the habitable zone of the system. We find that planet candidate f, if it exists, would also lie in the habitable zone. Our dynamical stability analysis also shows that the e Eridani planetary eccentricities, as reported, do not allow for a stable system, suggesting that they are lower. We introduce a new statistical approach for estimating the equilibrium and surface temperatures of exoplanets, based on a prior on the planetary albedo distribution. e Eridani is a rich planetary system with a possibility of containing two potentially habitable planets, and its vicinity to our Solar System makes it an important target for future imaging studies and biosignature searches., Comment: 27 Pages, 13 Figures, 5 Tables, Accepted for Publication in AJ

Study Analysis Group 21 (SAG21) of NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program Analysis Group (ExoPAG) was organized to study the effect of stellar contamination on space-based transmission spectroscopy, a method for studying exoplanetary atmospheres by measuring the wavelength-dependent radius of a planet as it transits its star. Transmission spectroscopy relies on a precise understanding of the spectrum of the star being occulted. However, stars are not homogeneous, constant light sources but have temporally evolving photospheres and chromospheres with inhomogeneities like spots, faculae, plages, granules, and flares. This SAG brought together an interdisciplinary team of more than 100 scientists, with observers and theorists from the heliophysics, stellar astrophysics, planetary science, and exoplanetary atmosphere research communities, to study the current research needs that can be addressed in this context to make the most of transit studies from current NASA facilities like HST and JWST. The analysis produced 14 findings, which fall into three Science Themes encompassing (1) how the Sun is used as our best laboratory to calibrate our understanding of stellar heterogeneities ("The Sun as the Stellar Benchmark"), (2) how stars other than the Sun extend our knowledge of heterogeneities ("Surface Heterogeneities of Other Stars") and (3) how to incorporate information gathered for the Sun and other stars into transit studies ("Mapping Stellar Knowledge to Transit Studies"). Planetary architectures remain unexplored for the vast majority of exoplanetary systems, even among the closest ones, with potentially hundreds of planets still ``hidden" from our knowledge. DYNAMITE is a powerful software package that can predict the presence and properties of these yet undiscovered planets. We have significantly expanded the integrative capabilities of DYNAMITE, which now allows for (i) planets of unknown inclinations alongside planets of known inclinations, (ii) population statistics and model distributions for the eccentricity of planetary orbits, and (iii) three different dynamical stability criteria. We demonstrate the new capabilities with a study of the HD 219134 exoplanet system consisting of four confirmed planets and two likely candidates, where five of the likely planets are Neptune-size or below with orbital periods less than 100 days. By integrating the known data for the HD 219134 planetary system with contextual and statistical exoplanet population information, we tested different system architecture hypotheses to determine their likely dynamical stability. Our results provide support for the planet candidates, and we predict at least two additional planets in this system. We also deploy DYNAMITE on analogs of the inner Solar System by excluding Venus or Earth from the input parameters to test DYNAMITE's predictive power. Our analysis finds the system remains stable while also recovering the excluded planets, demonstrating the increasing capability of DYNAMITE to accurately and precisely model the parameters of additional planets in multi-planet systems.

The first directly imaged exoplanets indicated that wide-orbit giant planets could be more common around A-type stars. However, the relatively small number of nearby A-stars has limited the precision of exoplanet demographics studies to $\gtrsim$10%. We aim to constrain the frequency of wide-orbit giant planets around A-stars using the VLT/SPHERE extreme adaptive optics system, which enables targeting $\gtrsim$100 A-stars between 100$-$200 pc. We present the results of a survey of 84 A-stars within the nearby $\sim$5$-$17 Myr-old Sco OB2 association. The survey detected three companions$-$one of which is a new discovery (HIP75056Ab), whereas the other two (HD 95086b and HIP65426b) are now-known planets that were included without a priori knowledge of their existence. We assessed the image sensitivity and observational biases with injection and recovery tests combined with Monte Carlo simulations to place constraints on the underlying demographics. We measure a decreasing frequency of giant planets with increasing separation, with measured values falling between 10$-$2% for separations of 30$-$100 au, and 95% confidence-level (CL) upper limits of $\lesssim$45$-$8% for planets on 30$-$100 au orbits, and $\lesssim$5% between 200$-$500 au. These values are in excellent agreement with recent surveys of A-stars in the solar neighborhood$-$supporting findings that giant planets at $\lesssim$100 au are more frequent around A-stars than around solar-type hosts. Finally, the relatively low occurrence rate of super-Jupiters on wide orbits, the positive correlation with stellar mass, and the inverse correlation with orbital separation are consistent with core accretion being their dominant formation mechanism., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

Brown dwarfs in close-in orbits around white dwarfs offer an excellent opportunity to investigate properties of fast-rotating, tidally-locked, and highly-irradiated atmospheres. We present Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 G141 phase-resolved observations of two brown dwarf-white dwarf binaries: WD 0137-349 and EPIC 212235321. Their 1.1 to 1.7 $\mu$m phase curves demonstrate rotational modulations with semi-amplitudes of $5.27\pm0.02$% and $29.1\pm0.1$%; both can be well fit by multi-order Fourier series models. The high-order Fourier components have the same phase as the first order and are likely caused by hot spots located at the substellar points, suggesting inefficient day/night heat transfer. Both brown dwarfs' phase-resolved spectra can be accurately represented by linear combinations of their day- and night-side spectra. Fitting the irradiated brown dwarf model grids to the day-side spectra require a filling factor of ~50%, further supporting a hot spot dominating the emission of the day-sides. The night-side spectrum of WD 0137-349B is reasonably well fit by non-irradiated substellar models and the one of EPIC 212235321B can be approximated by a Planck function. We find strong spectral variations in the brown dwarfs' day/night flux and brightness temperature contrasts, which highlights the limitations of band-integrated measurements in probing heat transfer in irradiated objects. On the color-magnitude diagram, WD 0137-349B evolves along a cloudless model track connecting the early-L and mid-T spectral types, demonstrating that clouds and disequilibrium chemistry have a negligible effect on this object. A full interpretation of these high-quality phase-resolved spectra calls for new models that couple atmospheric circulation and radiative transfer under high-irradiation conditions., Comment: Accepted for publication in the AAS Journals. Many brown dwarfs are on ultra-short period and tidally-locked orbits around white dwarf hosts. Because of these small orbital separations, the brown dwarfs are irradiated at levels similar to hot Jupiters. Yet, they are easier to observe than hot Jupiters because white dwarfs are fainter than main-sequence stars at near-infrared wavelengths. Irradiated brown dwarfs are, therefore, ideal hot Jupiter analogs for studying the atmospheric response under strong irradiation and fast rotation. We present the 1.1--1.67$\rm \mu m$ spectroscopic phase curve of the irradiated brown dwarf (SDSS1411-B) in the SDSS J141126.20+200911.1 brown-dwarf white-dwarf binary with the near-infrared G141 grism of Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3. SDSS1411-B is a $50~\rm M_{\rm Jup}$ brown dwarf with an irradiation temperature of 1300K and has an orbital period of 2.02864 hours. Our best-fit model suggests a phase-curve amplitude of 1.4$\%$ and places an upper limit of 11 degrees for the phase offset from the secondary eclipse. After fitting the white-dwarf spectrum, we extract the phase-resolved brown-dwarf emission spectra. We report a highly wavelength-dependent day-night spectral variation, with the water-band flux variation of about $360\pm70\% $ and a comparatively small J-band flux variation of $37\pm2\%$. By combining the atmospheric modeling results and the day-night brightness-temperature variations, we derive a pressure-dependent temperature contrast. We discuss the difference in the spectral features of SDSS1411-B and hot Jupiter WASP-43b, and the lower-than-predicted day-night temperature contrast of J4111-BD. Pandora is a SmallSat mission designed to study the atmospheres of exoplanets, and was selected as part of NASA's Astrophysics Pioneers Program. Transmission spectroscopy of transiting exoplanets provides our best opportunity to identify the makeup of planetary atmospheres in the coming decade. Stellar brightness variations due to star spots, however, can impact these measurements and contaminate the observed spectra. Pandora's goal is to disentangle star and planet signals in transmission spectra to reliably determine exoplanet atmosphere compositions. Pandora will collect long-duration photometric observations with a visible-light channel and simultaneous spectra with a near-IR channel. The broad-wavelength coverage will provide constraints on the spot and faculae covering fractions of low-mass exoplanet host stars and the impact of these active regions on exoplanetary transmission spectra. Pandora will subsequently identify exoplanets with hydrogen- or water-dominated atmospheres, and robustly determine which planets are covered by clouds and hazes. Pandora will observe at least 20 exoplanets with sizes ranging from Earth-size to Jupiter-size and host stars spanning mid-K to late-M spectral types. The project is made possible by leveraging investments in other projects, including an all-aluminum 0.45-meter Cassegrain telescope design, and a NIR sensor chip assembly from the James Webb Space Telescope. The mission will last five years from initial formulation to closeout, with one-year of science operations. Launch is planned for the mid-2020s as a secondary payload in Sun-synchronous low-Earth orbit. Giant exoplanets on 10-100 au orbits have been directly imaged around young stars. The peak of the thermal emission from these warm young planets is in the near-infrared (~1-5 microns), whereas mature, temperate exoplanets (i.e., those within their stars' habitable zones) radiate primarily in the mid-infrared (mid-IR: ~10 microns). If the background noise in the mid-IR can be mitigated, then exoplanets with low masses--including rocky exoplanets--can potentially be imaged in very deep exposures. Here, we review the recent results of the Breakthrough Watch/New Earths in the Alpha Centauri Region (NEAR) program on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. NEAR pioneered a ground-based mid-IR observing approach designed to push the capabilities for exoplanet imaging with a specific focus on the closest stellar system, Alpha Centauri. NEAR combined several new optical technologies--including a mid-IR optimized coronagraph, adaptive optics system, and rapid chopping strategy to mitigate noise from the central star and thermal background within the habitable zone. We focus on the lessons of the VLT/NEAR campaign to improve future instrumentation--specifically on strategies to improve noise mitigation through chopping. We also present the design and commissioning of the Large Binocular Telescope's Exploratory Survey for Super-Earths Orbiting Nearby Stars (LESSONS), an experiment in the Northern hemisphere that is building on what was learned from NEAR to further push the sensitivity of mid-IR imaging. The disintegrating planet candidate K2-22 b shows periodic and stochastic transits best explained by an escaping debris cloud. However, the mechanism that creates the debris cloud is unknown. The grain size of the debris as well as its sublimation rate can be helpful in understanding the environment that disintegrates the planet. Here, we present simultaneous photometry with the g band at 0.48 microns and KS band at 2.1 microns using the Large Binocular Telescope. During an event with very low dust activity, we put a new upper limit on the size of the planet of 0.71 earth radii or 4500 km. We also detected a medium-depth transit which can be used to constrain the dust particle sizes. We find that the median particle size must be larger than about 0.5 to 1.0 microns, depending on the composition of the debris. This leads to a high mass loss rate of about 3e8 kg/s that is consistent with hydrodynamic escape models. If they are produced by some alternate mechanism such as explosive volcanism, it would require extraordinary geological activity. Combining our upper limits on the planet size with the high mass loss rate, we find a lifetime of the planet of less than 370 Myr. This drops to just 21 Myr when adopting the 0.02 earth masses predicted from hydrodynamical models., Comment: AJ, accepted, 13 pages

We present a new ground-based optical transmission spectrum of the ultrahot Jupiter WASP-103b ($T_{eq} = 2484$K). Our transmission spectrum is the result of combining five new transits from the ACCESS survey and two new transits from the LRG-BEASTS survey with a reanalysis of three archival Gemini/GMOS transits and one VLT/FORS2 transit. Our combined 11-transit transmission spectrum covers a wavelength range of 3900--9450A with a median uncertainty in the transit depth of 148 parts-per-million, which is less than one atmospheric scale height of the planet. In our retrieval analysis of WASP-103b's combined optical and infrared transmission spectrum, we find strong evidence for unocculted bright regions ($4.3\sigma$) and weak evidence for H$_2$O ($1.9\sigma$), HCN ($1.7\sigma$), and TiO ($2.1\sigma$), which could be responsible for WASP-103b's observed temperature inversion. Our optical transmission spectrum shows significant structure that is in excellent agreement with the extensively studied ultrahot Jupiter WASP-121b, for which the presence of VO has been inferred. For WASP-103b, we find that VO can only provide a reasonable fit to the data if its abundance is implausibly high and we do not account for stellar activity. Our results highlight the precision that can be achieved by ground-based observations and the impacts that stellar activity from F-type stars can have on the interpretation of exoplanet transmission spectra., Comment: 33 pages, 17 figures, 7 tables. Recent discoveries of young exoplanets within their natal disks offer exciting opportunities to study ongoing planet formation. In particular, a planet's mass accretion rate can be constrained by observing the accretion-induced excess emission. So far, planetary accretion is only probed by the H$\alpha$ line, which is then converted to a total accretion luminosity using correlations derived for stars. However, the majority of the accretion luminosity is expected to emerge from hydrogen continuum emission, and is best measured in the ultraviolet (UV). In this paper, we present HST/WFC3/UVIS F336W (UV) and F656N (H$\alpha$) high-contrast imaging observations of PDS 70. Applying a suite of novel observational techniques, we detect the planet PDS 70 b with signal-to-noise ratios of 5.3 and 7.8 in the F336W and F656N bands, respectively. This is the first time that an exoplanet has been directly imaged in the UV. Our observed H$\alpha$ flux of PDS 70 b is higher by $3.5\sigma$ than the most recent published result. However, the light curve retrieved from our observations does not support greater than 30% variability in the planet's H$\alpha$ emission in six epochs over a five-month timescale. We estimate a mass accretion rate of $1.4\pm0.2\times10^{-8}M_{\mathrm{Jup}}/\mathrm{yr}$. H$\alpha$ accounts for 36% of the total accretion luminosity. Such a high proportion of energy released in line emission suggests efficient production of H$\alpha$ emission in planetary accretion, and motivates using the H$\alpha$ band for searches of accreting planets. We present a new ground-based visible transmission spectrum of the high-gravity, hot Jupiter HAT-P-23b, obtained as part of the ACCESS project. We derive the spectrum from five transits observed between 2016 and 2018, with combined wavelength coverage between 5200 {\AA} - 9269 {\AA} in 200 {\AA} bins, and with a median precision of 247 ppm per bin. HAT-P-23b's relatively high surface gravity (g ~ 30 m/s^2), combined with updated stellar and planetary parameters from Gaia DR2, gives a 5-scale-height signal of 384 ppm for a hydrogen-dominated atmosphere. Bayesian models favor a clear atmosphere for the planet with the tentative presence of TiO, after simultaneously modeling stellar contamination, using spots parameter constraints from photometry. If confirmed, HAT-P-23b would be the first example of a high-gravity gas giant with a clear atmosphere observed in transmission at optical/NIR wavelengths; therefore, we recommend expanding observations to the UV and IR to confirm our results and further characterize this planet. We present the discovery of rapid photometric variability in three ultra-cool dwarfs from long-duration monitoring with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The T7, L3.5, and L8 dwarfs have the shortest photometric periods known to date: ${1.080}^{+0.004}_{-0.005}$ h, ${1.14}^{+0.03}_{-0.01}$ h, and ${1.23}^{+0.01}_{-0.01}$ h, respectively. We confirm the rapid rotation through moderate-resolution infrared spectroscopy, which reveals projected rotational velocities between 79 and 104 km s$^{-1}$. We compare the near-infrared spectra to photospheric models to determine the objects' fundamental parameters and radial velocities. We find that the equatorial rotational velocities for all three objects are $\gtrsim$100 km s$^{-1}$. The three L and T dwarfs reported here are the most rapidly spinning and likely the most oblate field ultra-cool dwarfs known to date. Correspondingly, all three are excellent candidates for seeking auroral radio emission and net optical/infrared polarization. As of this writing, 78 L-, T-, and Y-dwarf rotation periods have now been measured. Next-generation space observatories will conduct the first systematic surveys of terrestrial exoplanet atmospheres and search for evidence of life beyond Earth. While in-depth observations of the nearest habitable worlds may yield enticing results, there are fundamental questions about planetary habitability and evolution which can only be answered through population-level studies of dozens to hundreds of terrestrial planets. To determine the requirements for next-generation observatories to address these questions, we have developed Bioverse. Bioverse combines existing knowledge of exoplanet statistics with a survey simulation and hypothesis testing framework to determine whether proposed space-based direct imaging and transit spectroscopy surveys will be capable of detecting various hypothetical statistical relationships between the properties of terrestrial exoplanets. Following a description of the code, we apply Bioverse to determine whether an ambitious direct imaging or transit survey would be able to determine the extent of the circumstellar habitable zone and study the evolution of Earth-like planets. Given recent evidence that Earth-sized habitable zone planets are likely much rarer than previously believed (Pascucci et al. 2019), we find that space missions with large search volumes will be necessary to study the population of terrestrial and habitable worlds. Brown dwarfs were recently found to display rotational modulations, commonly attributed to cloud cover of varying thickness, possibly modulated by planetary-scale waves. However, the long-term, continuous, high-precision monitoring data to test this hypothesis for more objects is lacking. By applying our novel photometric approach to TESS data, we extract a high-precision lightcurve of the closest brown dwarfs, which form the binary system Luhman 16AB. Our observations, that cover about 100 rotations of Luhman 16B, display continuous lightcurve evolution. The periodogram analysis shows that the rotational period of the component that dominates the lightcurve is 5.28 h. We also find evidence for periods of 2.5 h, 6.94 h, and 90.8 h. We show that the 2.5 h and 5.28 h periods emerge from Luhman 16B and that they consist of multiple, slightly shifted peaks, revealing the presence of high-speed jets and zonal circulation in this object. We find that the lightcurve evolution is well fit by the planetary-scale waves model, further supporting this interpretation. We argue that the 6.94 h peak is likely the rotation period of Luhman 16A. By comparing the rotational periods to observed v sin(i) measurements, we show that the two brown dwarfs are viewed at angles close to their equatorial planes. We also describe a long-period (P~91 h) evolution in the lightcurve, which we propose emerges from the vortex-dominated polar regions. In this paper, we present a study of the Trapezium cluster in Orion. We analyze flux-calibrated VLT/MUSE spectra of 361 stars to simultaneously measure the spectral types, reddening, and the optical veiling due to accretion. We find that the extinction law from Cardelli et al. (1989) with a total-to-selective extinction value of $R_{\rm V}=$5.5 is more suitable for this cluster. For 68% of the sample the new spectral types are consistent with literature spectral types within 2 subclasses, but as expected, we derive systematically later types than the literature by one to two subclasses for the sources with significant accretion levels. Here we present an improved Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram of the Trapezium cluster, in which the contamination by optical veiling on spectral types and stellar luminosities has been properly removed. A comparison of the locations of the stars in the H-R diagram with the non-magnetic and magnetic pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks indicates an age of 1--2~Myr. The magnetic pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks can better explain the luminosities of the low-mass stars. In the H-R diagram, the cluster exhibits a large luminosity spread ($\sigma$(Log~$L_{\star}/L_{\odot})\sim$0.3). By collecting a sample of 14 clusters/groups with different ages, we find that the luminosity spread tends to be constant ($\sigma$(Log~$L_{\star}/L_{\odot})\sim$0.2--0.25) after 2~Myr, which suggests that age spread is not the main cause of the spread. There are $\sim$0.1~dex larger luminosity spreads for the younger clusters, e.g., the Trapezium cluster, than the older clusters, which can be explained by the starspots, accretion history and circumstellar disk orientations., Comment: 31 pages, 16 figurs, 3 tables, accepted by ApJ

tau Ceti is the closest single Sun-like star to the solar system and hosts a multi-planet system with four confirmed planets. The possible presence of additional planets, especially potentially habitable worlds, remains of great interest. We analyze the structure of the tau Ceti planetary system via the DYNAMITE algorithm, combining information from exoplanet population statistics and orbital dynamics with measurements of this specific system. We also expand DYNAMITE to incorporate radial velocity information. Our analysis suggests the presence of four additional planets, three of which match closely with the periods of three tentative planet candidates reported previously. We also predict at least one more planet candidate with an orbital period between $\sim270-470$ days, in the habitable zone for tau Ceti. Based on the measured $m \sin i$ values of the confirmed planets, we also assess the possible masses and nature of the detected and undetected planets. The least massive planets and candidates are likely to be rocky, while the other planets and candidates could either be rocky or contain a significant gaseous envelope. The RV observable signature from the predicted habitable zone planet candidate would likely be at or just above the noise level in current data, but should be detectable in future extremely high-precision radial velocity and direct imaging studies., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted to AJ

Rotational modulations of emission spectra in brown dwarf and exoplanet atmospheres show that clouds are often distributed non-uniformly in these ultracool atmospheres. The spatial heterogeneity in cloud distribution demonstrates the impact of atmospheric dynamics on cloud formation and evolution. In this study, we update the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) time-series data analysis of the previously reported rotational modulations of WISEP J004701+680352 -- an unusually red late-L brown dwarf with a spectrum similar to that of the directly imaged planet HR8799e. We construct a self-consistent spatially heterogeneous cloud model to explain the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer time-series observations, as well as the time-averaged spectra of WISE0047. In the heterogeneous cloud model, a cloud thickness variation of around one pressure scale height explains the wavelength dependence in the HST near-IR spectral variability. By including disequilibrium CO/$CH_4$ chemistry, our models also reproduce the redder $J-K_{\rm s}$ color of WISE0047 compared to that of field brown dwarfs. We discuss the impact of vertical cloud structure on atmospheric profile and estimate the minimum eddy diffusivity coefficient for other objects with redder colors. We present the discovery and spectroscopy of HIP 75056Ab, a companion directly imaged at a very small separation of 0.125 arcsec to an A2V star in the Scorpius-Centaurus OB2 association. Our observations utilized VLT/SPHERE between 2015$-$2019, enabling low-resolution spectroscopy (0.95$-$1.65 $\mu m$), dual-band imaging (2.1$-$2.25 $\mu m$), and relative astrometry over a four-year baseline. HIP 75056Ab is consistent with spectral types in the range of M6$-$L2 and $T_{\rm eff}\sim$ 2000$-$2600 K. A comparison of the companion's brightness to evolutionary tracks suggests a mass of $\sim$20$-$30 M$_{Jup}$. The astrometric measurements are consistent with an orbital semi-major axis of $\sim$15$-$45 au and an inclination close to face-on (i$\lesssim$35$^o$). In this range of mass and orbital separation, HIP 75056Ab is likely at the low-mass end of the distribution of companions formed via disk instability, although a formation of the companion via core accretion cannot be excluded. The orbital constraints are consistent with the modest eccentricity values predicted by disk instability, a scenario that can be confirmed by further astrometric monitoring. HIP 75056Ab may be utilized as a low-mass atmospheric comparison to older, higher-mass brown dwarfs, and also to young giant planets. Finally, the detection of HIP 75056Ab at 0.125 arcsec represents a milestone in detecting low-mass companions at separations corresponding to the habitable zones of nearby Sun-like stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We present a new optical (400-950nm) transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-31b (M=0.48 MJ; R= 1.54 RJ; P=3.41 days), obtained by combining four transits observations. These transits were observed with IMACS on the Magellan Baade Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory as part of the ACCESS project. We investigate the presence of clouds/hazes in the upper atmosphere of this planet as well as the contribution of stellar activity on the observed features. In addition, we search for absorption features of the alkali elements Na I and K I, with particular focus on K I, for which there have been two previously published disagreeing results. Observations with HST/STIS detected K I, whereas ground-based low- and high-resolution observations did not. We use equilibrium and non-equilibrium chemistry retrievals to explore the planetary and stellar parameter space of the system with our optical data combined with existing near-IR observations. Our best-fit model is that with a scattering slope consistent with a Rayleigh slope (alpha=5.3+2.9-3.1), high-altitude clouds at a log cloud top pressure of -3.6+2.7-2.1 bars, and possible muted H2O features. We find that our observations support other ground-based claims of no K I. Clouds are likely why signals like H2O are extremely muted and Na or K cannot be detected. We then juxtapose our Magellan/IMACS transmission spectrum with existing VLT/FORS2, HST/WFC3, HST/STIS, and Spitzer observations to further constrain the optical-to-infrared atmospheric features of the planet. We find that a steeper scattering slope (alpha = 8.3+/-1.5) is anchored by STIS wavelengths blueward of 400 nm and only the original STIS observations show significant potassium signal., Comment: Accepted 14 September 2020 by AJ

Multi-planet systems produce a wealth of information for exoplanet science, but our understanding of planetary architectures is incomplete. Probing these systems further will provide insight into orbital architectures and formation pathways. Here we present a model to predict previously undetected planets in these systems via population statistics. The model considers both transiting and non-transiting planets, and can test the addition of more than one planet. Our tests show the model's orbital period predictions are robust to perturbations in system architectures on the order of a few percent, much larger than current uncertainties. Applying it to the multi-planet systems from TESS provides a prioritized list of targets, based on predicted transit depth and probability, for archival searches and for guiding ground-based follow-up observations hunting for hidden planets., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, accepted to Astronomical Journal

We investigate the atmospheric composition of the long period ($P_{\rm orb}=$ 10 days), eccentric exo-Saturn WASP-117b. WASP-117b could be in atmospheric temperature and chemistry similar to WASP-107b. In mass and radius WASP-117b is similar to WASP-39b, which allows a comparative study of these planets. We analyze a near-infrared transmission spectrum of WASP-117b taken with Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 G141, which was reduced with two independent pipelines. High resolution measurements were taken with VLT/ESPRESSO in the optical. We report the robust ($3\sigma$) detection of a water spectral feature. Using a 1D atmosphere model with isothermal temperature, uniform cloud deck and equilibrium chemistry, the Bayesian evidence of a retrieval analysis of the transmission spectrum indicates a preference for a high atmospheric metallicity ${\rm [Fe/H]}=2.58^{+0.26}_{-0.37}$ and clear skies. The data are also consistent with a lower-metallicity composition ${\rm [Fe/H]}<1.75$ and a cloud deck between $10^{-2.2} - 10^{-5.1}$ bar, but with weaker Bayesian preference. We retrieve a low CH$_4$ abundance of $<10^{-4}$ volume fraction within $1 \sigma$ and $<2\cdot 10^{-1}$ volume fraction within $3 \sigma$. We cannot constrain the equilibrium temperature between theoretically imposed limits of 700 and 1000~K. Further observations are needed to confirm quenching of CH$_4$ with $K_{zz}\geq 10^8$~cm$^2$/s. The population of exoplanetary systems detected by Kepler provides opportunities to refine our understanding of planet formation. Unraveling the conditions needed to produce the observed exoplanets will sallow us to make informed predictions as to where habitable worlds exist within the galaxy. In this paper, we examine using N-body simulations how the properties of planetary systems are determined during the final stages of assembly. While accretion is a chaotic process, trends in the ensemble properties of planetary systems provide a memory of the initial distribution of solid mass around a star prior to accretion. We also use EPOS, the Exoplanet Population Observation Simulator, to account for detection biases and show that different accretion scenarios can be distinguished from observations of the Kepler systems. We show that the period of the innermost planet, the ratio of orbital periods of adjacent planets, and masses of the planets are determined by the total mass and radial distribution of embryos and planetesimals at the beginning of accretion. In general, some amount of orbital damping, either via planetesimals or gas, during accretion is needed to match the whole population of exoplanets. Surprisingly, all simulated planetary systems have planets that are similar in size, showing that the "peas in a pod" pattern can be consistent with both a giant impact scenario and a planet migration scenario. The inclusion of material at distances larger than what Kepler observes has a profound impact on the observed planetary architectures, and thus on the formation and delivery of volatiles to possible habitable worlds., Comment: Resubmitted to ApJ. Life has had a dramatic impact on the composition of Earth's atmosphere over time, which suggests that statistical studies of other inhabited planets' atmospheres could reveal how they co-evolve with life. While many evolutionary pathways are possible for inhabited worlds, a possible starting hypothesis is that most of them evolve similarly to Earth, which we propose could lead to a positive "age-oxygen correlation" between the ages of inhabited planets and the fraction which have oxygen-rich atmospheres. We demonstrate that next-generation space observatories currently under consideration could test this hypothesis, but only if the stellar age distribution of the target sample is carefully considered. We explore three possible parameterizations of the age-oxygen correlation, finding that they yield similar results. Finally, we examine how abiotic oxygen sources could affect the results, and discuss how measuring the age-dependence of oxygen could shed light on whether it is a reliable biosignature.
