Formation properties near a borehole are frequently altered by mechanical damage from drilling, leading to variations of formation elastic velocities in the radial direction. Inversions of the radial shear profiles are necessary for the real-time evaluation of the drilling conditions. In this study, we investigate acoustic wave propagation in a logging-while-drilling (LWD) model excited by a dipole transducer in cylindrically layered media. It is revealed that the dispersion characteristics of the dipole waves of the LWD are sensitive to the radial formation velocity variation. Accordingly, we develop a joint inversion method that evaluates radial shear-velocity profiles using the dipole modes of both the first and second orders. The propagation of these two modes is strongly influenced by formation alterations, but the inversion results obtained using a single dipole mode show ambiguity caused by the nonuniqueness problem. Through the proposed joint inversion, the additional second-order dipole wave can effectively help address the nonuniqueness issue in dipole acoustic logging, although its dispersion features differ in fast and slow formations. It is validated that the joint inversion has considerably improved convergence and accuracy in evaluating both the thickness and shear velocity of the altered zone, compared with the estimation by a single acoustic mode. Furthermore, we present numerical results based on synthetic logging data to demonstrate the feasibility of this inversion in a continuously varying profile, regardless of whether the formation surrounding the borehole is fast or slow. Even when strong drilling noises of low frequencies are added to the receiver signal arrays, the means of joint inversion can remain stable, and the shear-velocity profiles can be evaluated with good precision.

Conducting polymers (CPs) with high conductivity and solution processability have made great advances since the pioneering work on doped polyacetylenesup1-3/sup, thus creating the new field of 'organic synthetic metals,sup4/sup. Various high-performance CPs have been realized, which enable the applications of several organic electronic devicessup5,6/sup. Nevertheless, most CPs exhibit hole-dominant (p-type) transport behavioursup7,8/sup, whereas the development of n-type analogues lags far behind and only a few exhibit metallic state, typically limited by low doping efficiency and ambient instability. Here we present a facilely synthesized highly conductive n-type polymer poly(benzodifurandione) (PBFDO). The reaction combines oxidative polymerization and in situ reductive n-doping, greatly increasing the doping efficiency, and a doping level of almost 0.9 charges per repeating unit can be achieved. The resultant polymer exhibits a breakthrough conductivity of more than 2,000 S cmsup-1/supwith excellent stability and an unexpected solution processability without extra side chains or surfactants. Furthermore, detailed investigations on PBFDO show coherent charge-transport properties and existence of metallic state. The benchmark performances in electrochemical transistors and thermoelectric generators are further demonstrated, thus paving the way for application of the n-type CPs in organic electronics.

Different connected parts of clonal plants often grow in different patches and the resource contrast between patches has an important effect on the material transfer between the connected ramets. However, it is unclear whether the effect of clonal integration differs between the invasive clonal plant and the related native species in response to patch contrast. To explore this, we grew the clonal fragment pairs of plant invader Alternanthera philoxeroides and its co-genus native species A. sessilis under high contrast, low contrast, and no contrast (control) nutrient patch environments, respectively, and with stolon connections either severed or kept intact. The results showed that, at the ramet level, clonal integration (stolon connection) significantly improved the growth of apical ramets of both species, and such positive effects were significantly greater in A. philoxeroides than in A. sessilis. Moreover, clonal integration greatly increased the chlorophyll content index of apical ramets and the growth of basal ramets in A. philoxeroides but not in A. sessilis under low and high contrast. At the whole fragment level, the benefits of clonal integration increased with increasing patch contrast, and such a positive effect was more pronounced in A. philoxeroides than in A. sessilis. This study demonstrated that A. philoxeroides possesses a stronger ability of clonal integration than A. sessilis, especially in patchy environments with a higher degree of heterogeneity, suggesting that clonal integration may give some invasive clonal plants a competitive advantage over native species, thus facilitating their invasion in patchy habitats.

A new type of acidic exopolysaccharide (AESP-II) was extracted and separated from the fermentation broth of Cordyceps militaris (C. militaris), which was further purified to elucidate its structural characteristics and immunological activity. AESP-II was confirmed to be an acidic pyranose with a molecular weight of 61.52 kDa, which consisted of mannose, glucuronic acid, rhamnose, galactose acid, N-acetyl-galactosamine, glucose, galactose and arabinose with a molar ratio of 1.07: 5.38: 1: 3.14: 2.23: 15: 6.09: and 4.04. Animal experiment results verified that AESP-II can significantly promote the proliferation of spleen T and B lymphocytes in mice with immune injury caused by cyclophosphamide (CTX). In particular, the promotion of B lymphocytes presented a dose-effect relationship. In addition, the levels of the cytokines IL-2, IL-4, and IFN-γ, which are mainly secreted by T lymphocytes, and immunoglobulin IgG, IgM and IgA, which are mainly secreted by B lymphocytes, were increased after AESP-II treatment. The above results suggest that fluid immunity is involved in the immunomodulatory function of AESP-II. Simultaneously, AESP-II was detected significantly to promote the phosphorylation expression of p38 kinase (p38), extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) by Western blot, further suggesting that the activation of the MAPK signaling pathway mediates the immunoregulatory function of AESP-II.

A novel composite hole transport layer is developed by combining 2PACz with MoO3. Inverted OSCs with the highest efficiency of 18.49% were achieved, which was much higher than that of the control device based on a MoO3 HTL (17.46%).

Active fault detection has an important significance for seismic disaster prevention and mitigation in urban areas. The high-density station arrays have the potential to provide a microtremor survey solution for shallow seismic investigations. However, the resolution limitation of the nodal seismometer and small-scale lateral velocity being inhomogeneous hinder their application in near-surface active fault exploration. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has been developed rapidly in the past few years; it takes an optical fiber as the sensing medium and signal transmission medium, which can continuously detect vibration over long distances with high spatial resolution and low cost. This paper tried to address the issue of near-surface active fault exploration by using DAS. We selected a normal fault in the southern Datong basin, a graben basin in the Shanxi rift system in north China, to carry out the research. Microtremor surveys across the possible range of the active fault were conducted using DAS and nodal seismometers, so as to obtain a shallow shear wave velocity model. Meanwhile, we applied a Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (BOTDR) and distributed temperature sensing (DTS) to monitor the real-time fluctuation of ground temperature and strain. Our results show that the resolution of the deep structures of the fault via the microtremor survey based on DAS is lower than that via the seismic reflection; whereas, their fault location is consistent, and the near-surface structure of the fault can be traced in the DAS results. In addition, both the BOTDR and DTS results indicate an apparent consistent change in ground temperature and strain across the fault determined by the DAS result, and the combination of surface monitoring and underground exploration will help to accurately avoid active faults and seismic potential assessment in urban areas.

A green, efficient, and high active catalytic system for the hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes to produce corresponding alcohols under atmospheric-pressure H2 gas and ambient temperature conditions was developed by a water-soluble metal–ligand bifunctional catalyst [Cp*Ir(2,2′-bpyO)(OH)][Na] in water without addition of a base. The catalyst exhibited high activity for the hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes. Furthermore, it was worth noting that many readily reducible or labile functional groups in the same molecule, such as cyan, nitro, and ester groups, remained unchanged. Interestingly, the unsaturated aldehydes can be also selectively hydrogenated to give corresponding unsaturated alcohols with remaining C=C bond in good yields. In addition, this reaction could be extended to gram levels and has a large potential of wide application in future industrial.
