Abstract

With the growing demand and projected shortage of rare earth elements in the near future, the urgent task of developing energy-efficient electrical equipment with less dependence on rare earth magnets has become paramount. The use of permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motors (PMaSynRMs), which reduce the consumption of rare earth magnets, can help solve this problem. This article presents a theoretical analysis of the characteristics of PMaSynRM in a subway train drive. Options with rare earth and ferrite magnets are considered. Optimization of the motor designs considering the train movement cycle is carried out using the Nelder-Mead method. Characteristics of the motors, such as losses, torque ripple, and inverter power rating, as well as the mass and cost of active materials, are compared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Featured Application: The proposed solution for the high-power IGBT driver can be used as a reference for the design of similar intelligent gate drives, improving the reliability of power electronic converters in traction, industrial, and renewable energy applications. High-power IGBTs are used in power electronic converters in a variety of applications: traction drives, renewable power converters, mining equipment, oil and water pumping, and so on. To control a transistor, a special gate driver board is required. This board converts the logical control signal into the appropriate voltage values necessary to turn the resistor on and off. Gate drivers can perform the protection functions of IGBTs using hardware and algorithmic approaches. Application-specific integrated circuits are often used in driver solutions to implement control and protection. The development of an application-specific integrated circuit is a time-consuming and expensive procedure, which increases the cost of the driver. This paper describes the control and protection algorithms implemented in an intelligent IGBT driver based on a low-cost microcontroller. The use of the microcontroller makes the gate driver design more flexible and allows for the accurate tuning of the protection thresholds. The gate driver protects the IGBT from short-circuiting, overcurrent, and overvoltage, monitors the voltage supply, and controls the switch on and switch off processes in the transistor. 17. Calibration of Incremental Position Encoder for the Precise Measurement of Low Speeds

Abstract

Accurate speed measurement is mandatory for precision electric drives. These drives frequently utilize incremental position encoders for speed measurement as a derivative of the position in time. At present, the best practice is the implementation of the constant elapsed time (CET) methods, which operate with the position increment of multiples of four owing to the inaccuracies of the position encoder. The position increment defines the measurement time or the delay in the feedback, which strongly affects the performance of the speed loop. At low speeds, the position increment should be made smaller than four to keep the measurement delay within the limits of speed loop stability. However, the utilization of position increments smaller than four leads to high errors in speed estimation due to the uncompensated errors of the incremental encoder. Therefore, this study examined the errors of the incremental encoder to propose a calibration strategy for the synchronous CET speed estimation technique, which allows for accurate speed measurement at low speeds. The experimental results proved that the proposed method helps in decreasing the minimum measurable speed four times more than the original synchronous CET method with acceptable accuracy and computational complexity.

Abstract

Due to its special features, the Magnus effect wind turbine allows you to produce energy at a very low speed of the wind. This fact, as well as the growing interest in the of blockchain technology, makes it possible to use this type of wind turbine in private household as part of a distributed energy system in addition to solar panels. The article describes a two blades Magnus wind turbine whose cylinders rotate by means of embedded motors. To avoid a von Karman vortex street effect that occur when the cylinders rotate in the air flow, as well as to ensure maximum power, the optimal ratio between the wind speed and the cylinder rotation speed is determined using finite element analysis. Further, the obtained relations are used in the algorithms of the wind turbine control system.
