The book Tempo de Balaio (2008) by geographer Carlos Augusto de Figueiredo Monteiro is the first book in a set of five volumes. In the first book, the author presents a geographical and historical interpretation of the State of Piauí, while in the following volumes he devotes himself to the history of the four generations of his family, ending with their migration to Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s. Accompanied of authorial drawings, the books compose a general picture of the evolution of that society between the 19th and 20th centuries. Without ceasing to be a critical reading, this article tries to understand the central argument of the first book, Tempo de Balaio. We seek to highlight the innovations in analysis, the beauty of the text and the problems of method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
