Wall finishes with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance, commonly known as cool walls, can reduce the exterior surface temperatures of façades, and consequently the building cooling energy needs and power demand, and lower the sensitivity to degradation. Aging, though, may affect their performance. To investigate this risk, we exposed for four years in Milan, Italy, two series of façade finish coats, white and beige, facing north and south, in vertical and vertical-sheltered position, and we measured their solar spectral reflectance and thermal emittance before and after aging. The solar reflectance of the white finish coats drops from 0.75 to 0.55 in four years, and from 0.46 to 0.38 for the beige coats, while the thermal emittance is unchanged. Then, for a typical residential building with white walls, we computed that the cooling energy needs increase with walls aging by 5% and 11%, respectively, with or without exterior wall insulation. The exterior surface temperature is increased even by 6 °C, and the number of sudden surface temperature variations in one hour is boosted. Finally, the moisture content in the external layers is reduced, showing the impact on the heat and mass balance because of the uncertainty in solar absorption due to aging.

"Made in Germany" is very popular in China and recognized as proof of quality. However, German approaches cannot always be transferred to other regions and cultures without adaptation. The German Passive House Standard for instance is such a German development which attracts more and more attention. Its principles support China in moving forward towards energy efficient buildings, which has already been demonstrated in many pilot projects. Yet, designers need to be aware that the methods, that are developed for and commonly used in Europe, may not be adequate for the greatly varying building practice and climate conditions in other countries.

Effizientes Lüften trägt nicht nur entscheidend zur Behaglichkeit und Hygiene im Raum bei, sondern ist auch bedeutend für den Energiebedarf von Gebäuden. Früher hat sich die Luft noch weitgehend ohne aktives Zutun durch Undichtigkeiten - besonders bei den Fenstern - regelmäßig ausgetauscht. Bei modernen Gebäuden ist dies nicht mehr der Fall. Heute muss der Nutzer aktiv eingreifen, um dauerhaft hygienische und komfortable Bedingungen sicherzustellen. Ist keine mechanische Lüftungsanlage vorhanden, erfolgt dies in der Regel manuell durch das Öffnen der Fenster. So einfach diese Tätigkeit auch wirkt, so komplex ist es dabei, die ideale Balance zwischen einem ausreichenden Luftaustausch zur Sicherstellung hygienischer Bedingungen und der Minimierung der Lüftungswärmeverluste zu finden. Mit Hilfe dynamischer hygrothermischer Gebäudesimulation können für konkrete Gebäude unter realen Bedingungen Lüftungskonzepte entwickelt und deren Effizienz untersucht werden. In dem hier untersuchten Anwendungsfall soll die natürliche Lüftung in einem Einfamilienhaus (Bild 1) in Holzkirchen (südlich von München) untersucht werden. Dafür werden verschiedene Fensteröffnungszeiten angesetzt, hauptsächlich beeinflusst von den Außenklima-Bedingungen und einer stochastisch ermittelten Nutzerinteraktion. Der dadurch erzielbare natürliche Luftwechsel wird mit der Gebäudesimulationssoftware »WUFI Plus« berechnet, wodurch Aussagen zur Behaglichkeit, Hygiene und zum Energiebedarf in Abhängigkeit vom Nutzer-Fensteröffnungsverhalten gemacht werden können.

Mit der Hilfe von hygrothermischer Gebäudesimulation ist es möglich, das Raumklima in historischen Gebäuden vorherzusagen. Klimatische Vorgänge werden damit nachvollziehbar und Auswirkungen von Maßnahmen können in Hinblick auf Risiken und Energiebedarf vorab abgeschätzt werden. Die Wechselwirkung zwischen Raum und Bauteilen wird berücksichtigt, um die relative Feuchte und deren Schwankung im Raum richtig vorherzusagen. Hierzu werden in WUFI® Plus alle Vorgänge beim Austausch und Transport von Feuchte an und in Bauteilen modelliert.

Unser bauliches Kulturerbe ist in besonderer Weise von den Auswirkungen des Klimawandels betroffen. Denn viel stärker als in der Vergangenheit besteht die Gefahr, dass es durch rasant fortschreitende Korrosionsprozesse angegriffen wird. Korrosion stellte zwar schon immer eine Gefahr für Materialien aller Art wie auch für die Substanz historischer Gebäude dar. Aber mit dem prognostizierten weltweiten Anstieg der Umgebungstemperaturen nehmen die chemischen Reaktionen, die für solche zersetzenden Prozesse verantwortlich sind, an Fahrt auf. Dem liegt die exponentielle Arrhenius-Beziehung zwischen Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit und Temperatur zugrunde: Bei einem Temperaturanstieg um 10 Grad verdoppeln derartige Reaktionen ihre Zerstörungskraft. Doch nicht nur die Korrosionsgefahr baulicher Substanz nimmt mit dem Klimawandel zu. In Küstennähe, besonders in den Niederlanden, wächst die Bedrohung durch einen steigenden Meeresspiegel. Allgemein steigt das Risiko, dass Bauten in ihrer Struktur oder an ihrer Außenseite von Überflutungen, Stürmen oder Starkregen schwerer geschädigt werden als bisher. Vor allem im nördlichen Europa erhöht sich damit die Gefahr von Schimmelpilzwachstum.

Extensive experimental investigations have been carried out in the passive house in Boruszowice for several years. The building foundation interface consists of a 25 cm reinforced concrete slab situated on a 40 cm layer of Styrofoam. The analysis of experimental results as well as theoretical calculations made it possible to determine the thermal performance of the applied slab on grade with floor heating during the whole year.

Der Artikel beschreibt die historische Entwicklung des Passivhaus Konzepts, daraus resultierende Herausforderungen und in einem nächsten Schritt die Kombination des Monatsbilanzverfahrens zum Passivhausdesign mit einem dynamischen Gebäudesimulationsmodell, um verbesserte Lösungen entwickeln zu können. Die zu Grunde liegende Methodik des stationären Ansatzes und der dynamischen hygrothermischen Simulation wird beschrieben. Daraus erschließt sich die Herangehensweise zur Kopplung beider Methoden. Gemeinsam nutzbare Eingaben, wie z.B. die Gebäudegeometrie, Bauteilaufbauten oder die technische Gebäudeausrüstung werden nur einmal festgelegt. Weitere Informationen, z.B. Sollwerteinstellungen, innere Lasten, Lüftung oder Verschattung, können aus dem stationären Ansatz in die dynamische Berechnung übernommen werden. Hier ist es aber oft sinnvoll, zeitlich feiner aufgelöste Profile für eine detailliertere Beurteilung einzugeben. An einem Anwendungsbeispiel wird die Umsetzung gezeigt und es wird erläutert, welche Ergebnisse sich durch die neu entwickelte Software erzielen lassen. Die Vorteile der Kombination eines schnellen stationären Ansatzes mit einer dynamischen hygrothermischen Simulation, beide Berechnungen basierend auf ein und demselben Gebäudemodell, werden hervorgehoben. Somit ergibt sich auch ein Schluss über mögliche Anwendungsgebiete und -grenzen der neu entwickelten Software.

Im Gebäudebereich Tadschikistans werden etwa 45 Prozent der gesamten Endenergie für die Wärmeerzeugung aufgewendet. Eine der wichtigsten Aufgaben im Baubereich ist daher, die Energieeffizienz von Gebäuden zu erhöhen. Die normativen Vorgaben zur Erstellung von Wohngebäuden waren in Tadschikistan bis Ende der 1980er Jahre ausschließlich auf die Baukosten fixiert, also auf Minimierung der Investitionskosten ohne Berücksichtigung der Betriebskosten, da Energie billig verfügbar war.

Indoor humidity is an important factor for human health, well-being or damage like mold growth. Excessive indoor humidity conditions may be caused by non-adequate ventilation or temporarily due to change of temperature in rooms. The moisture buffering effect of linings and the resulting impact to air humidity are topics of this study. Special developed unsealed ceramic tiles and their capability to dampen the fluctuation in air humidity have been investigated, including the determination of relevant hygric material properties. A series of experiments in chambers were designed and executed to show summer and winter situations with temperature changes or different moisture sources. The resulting relative humidity in the chamber was monitored in the baseline experiment with no moisture buffer capacity as well as in the experiment with the installed new developed moisture buffering tiles. The experiment was validated and extrapolated to real room conditions, using a transienthygrothermal whole building simulation tool. The results show a reduction of relative humidity fluctuation, which attest the humidity-buffering effect of the material. The validation of the hygrothermal simulation with the experiment was successful. A hygrothermal whole building simulation demonstrates the damping of air humidity fluctuations for buildings under real usage conditions and in diverse climate regions. It is shown that thermal comfort conditions can be improved along with lower energy requirements for de-/humidification by using humidity buffering linings. A correct assessment can only be conducted with hygrothermal whole building simulation tools.

Indoor buoyant convection is a topic, where in strong contrast to the field of forced convection by ventilation systems, publications of measured data including all necessary boundary conditions for numerical simulations are very scarce. For this reason it is difficult for users of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation software to validate their results. This is a significant obstacle especially for beginners in the field of CFD. A project of Technische Universität München and Universtität Kassel is aimed to change the situation by two-dimensional velocity measurements of cases of free convection in a real scale setup via Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)/Particle Streak Velocimetry (PSV). The results are meant to lay solid ground for the validation of CFD-simulations dealing with indoor conditions. The measurements in the first stage of the project take several aspects of indoor buoyant convection into account and will also start to investigate the efficiency of window ventilation due to temperature differences. By use of the two-dimensional measurements of air velocities, air and surface temperatures it is possible to gain comfort criteria and to compare them to field studies with test persons. Electronic publishing of the measured data as well as of all needed boundary conditions for validation use is planned to start by the date of the conference. A web-based platform will enable discussions among registered users and the publication of own simulation results in later stages of the project.

In today’s world of constructions engineering membranes play such an important role that they are often referred to as “the fifth construction material”. One of the particularly innovative application areas is the use in tensile architecture. Membrane cushions form the envelopes of buildings like swimming halls, atrium-roofs or sport arenas for example. As the same requirements apply for buildings with membrane roofs as well as for regular buildings, standard indicators are needed to describe the thermal performance of the building. Regarding energy transmission lightweight building elements made of transparent membrane cushions show a different behavior compared to monolithic building parts or even windows. Existing standards relevant for U-value or g-value calculations are developed for conventional building structures. The defined range of application of these calculation methods does not include curved building elements or large locked air spaces. The U-value of membrane cushions depend disproportional high on the boundary conditions. Angular dependencies of reflection and transmission as well as orientation of the cushion influence the result of the g-value. All limitations and restrictions of existing standards for their application on membrane cushions will be discussed in the paper. Calculation methods described in DIN EN 673 and DIN EN 410 will be applied on membrane cushions. Parameter variations for panel thickness, number of membrane layers and different heat flux directions show the deviations between the standards. The results will be compared to measurements. Differing outcomes can be explained by simplifications made in the standards. The underlying physics need to be discussed to adopt standards for membrane cushions. This paper provides an overview of relevant calculation methods to describe the thermal performance as well as their applicability on membrane cushions. Furthermore it points out critical cases, where the calculation does not meet the requested accuracy and shows the demand of modification.

Building envelopes built of membrane cushions are sometimes called the new face of architecture. This new and innovative building technology stands out due to an increasing growth worldwide. Because of its newness some standards, which are long time established for other types of construction, are not available for membrane cushions. There are no methods available how to calculate the thermal transfer through the membrane cushion in everyday engineering practice. Existing standards refer to windows and can not be used for membrane cushions because of different material, shape, dimensions and curvature. Deeper knowledge about what occurs inside the cushions and its effects on thermal transfer is not available. Even basic understanding about processes inside and around the cushions is often missing, which leads to problems in the whole area of building physics. The thermal transfer through this building part depends mainly on the airflow within the cushion and the surface to surface radiation. Both mechanisms can be calculated with commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools. This simulation technique was used for the study. Within the study presented the natural convection inside membrane cushions was investigated. Parameter studies with different temperature boundary conditions as driving potential, different cushion volumes and inclinations provide insight into varying flow patterns resulting from the different conditions. The dimensions of the simulation model correspond to the dimensions of an experimental set-up for a membrane cushion tested under realistic outdoor conditions. Different states of flow patterns can be defined as result of the parameter variations. A general description of these states leads to basic generalizations about natural convection and surface to surface radiation within the membrane cushion. The numeric fluid mechanics study provides additional insight which can lead to improved constructions and adaptation of existing codes and standards. A comparison with measurements in membrane cushions tested under real conditions shows similar flow patterns and temperature fields for measurement and simulation. The results of this study can help to develop a simple method for the determination of the thermal transfer through the membrane cushion and a resulting U-value.
