Most investigations of the X-ray variability of active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been concentrated on the detailed analyses of individual, nearby sources. A relatively small number of studies have treated the ensemble behaviour of the more general AGN population in wider regions of the luminosity-redshift plane. We want to determine the ensemble variability properties of a rich AGN sample, called Multi-Epoch XMM Serendipitous AGN Sample (MEXSAS), extracted from the fifth release of the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue (XMMSSC-DR5), with redshift between 0.1 and 5, and X-ray luminosities in the 0.5-4.5 keV band between 10^42 and 10^47 erg/s. We urge caution on the use of the normalised excess variance (NXS), noting that it may lead to underestimate variability if used improperly. We use the structure function (SF), updating our previous analysis for a smaller sample. We propose a correction to the NXS variability estimator, accounting for the light curve duration in the rest frame on the basis of the knowledge of the variability behaviour gained by SF studies. We find an ensemble increase of the X-ray variability with the rest-frame time lag tau, given by tau^0.12. We confirm an inverse dependence on the X-ray luminosity, approximately as L_X^-0.19. We analyse the SF in different X-ray bands, finding a dependence of the variability on the frequency as nu^-0.15, corresponding to a softer when brighter trend. In turn, this dependence allows us to parametrically correct the variability estimated in observer-frame bands to that in the rest frame, resulting in a moderate shift upwards (V-correction). Ensemble X-ray variability of AGNs is best described by the structure function. An improper use of the normalised excess variance may lead to an underestimate of the intrinsic variability, so that appropriate corrections to the data or the models must be applied to prevent these effects., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures, to appear on Astronomy and Astrophysics; v2 updated with language editing and a few clarifications about structure function

The XMM-Newton X-ray observatory has repeatedly observed the CDFS in 33 epochs (2001-2010) through the XMM-CDFS Deep Survey. During the X-ray observations, XMM-OM targeted the central 17x17 arcmin2 region of the X-ray field of view, providing simultaneous optical/UV coverage of the CDFS. The resulting set of data can be used to build an XMM-OM catalogue of the CDFS, filling the UV spectral coverage between the optical surveys and GALEX observations. We present the UV catalogue of the XMM-CDFS Deep Survey. Its main purpose is to provide complementary UV average photometric measurements of known optical/UV sources in the CDFS, taking advantage of the unique characteristics of the survey. The data reduction is also intended to improve the standard source detection on individual observations, by cataloguing faint sources by stacking their exposure images. We reprocessed the XMM-OM data of the survey and stacked the exposures from consecutive observations using the standard SAS tools to process the data obtained during single observations. Average measurements of detections with SAS good quality flags from individual observations and from stacked images were joined to compile the catalogue. Sources were validated through the cross-identification within the EIS and COMBO-17 surveys. Photometric data of 1129 CDFS sources are provided in the catalogue, and optical/UV/X-ray photometric and spectroscopic information from other surveys are also included. The stacking extends the detection limits by ~1 mag in the three UV bands, contributing 30% of the catalogued UV sources. The comparison with the available measurements in similar spectral bands confirms the validity of the XMM-OM calibration. The combined COMBO-17/X-ray classification of the "intermediate" sources (e.g. optically diluted and/or X-ray absorbed AGN) is also discussed., Comment: Change of numbering in the title, language corrections, version corresponding to that in press, 15 pages, 12 Figures, to appear on Astronomy and Astrophysics. Variability, both in X-ray and optical/UV, affects the well-known anti-correlation between the $\alpha_{ox}$ spectral index and the UV luminosity of active galactic nuclei, contributing part of the dispersion around the average correlation ("intra-source dispersion"), in addition to the differences among the time-average $\alpha_{ox}$ values from source to source ("inter-source dispersion"). We want to evaluate the intrinsic $\alpha_{ox}$ variations in individual objects, and their effect on the dispersion of the $\alpha_{ox}-L_{UV}$ anti-correlation. We use simultaneous UV/X-ray data from Swift observations of a low-redshift sample, to derive the epoch-dependent $\alpha_{ox}(t)$ indices. We correct for the host galaxy contribution by a spectral fit of the optical/UV data. We compute ensemble structure functions to analyse variability of multi-epoch data. We find a strong "intrinsic $\alpha_{ox}$ variability", which makes an important contribution ($\sim40%$ of the total variance) to the dispersion of the $\alpha_{ox}-L_{UV}$ anti-correlation ("intra-source dispersion"). The strong X-ray variability and weaker UV variability of this sample are comparable to other samples of low-z AGNs, and are neither due to the high fraction of strongly variable NLS1s, nor to dilution of the optical variability by the host galaxies. Dilution affects instead the slope of the anti-correlation, which steepens, once corrected, becoming similar to higher luminosity sources. The structure function of $\alpha_{ox}$ increases with the time lag up to $\sim$1 month. The observed relation between the X-ray radiation from AGNs, originating in the corona, and the optical/UV radiation from the disk is usually described by the anticorrelation between the UV to X-ray slope alpha_ox and the UV luminosity. Many factors can affect this relation, including: enhanced X-ray emission associated with the jets of radio-loud AGNs; X-ray absorption associated with the UV Broad Absorption Line (BAL) outflows; other X-ray absorption not associated with BALs; intrinsic X-ray weakness; UV and X-ray variability, and non-simultaneity of UV and X-ray observations. The separation of these effects provides information about the intrinsic alpha_ox-L_UV relation and its dispersion, constraining models of disk-corona coupling. We extract simultaneous data from the second XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue and the XMM-Newton Optical Monitor Serendipitous UV Source Survey Catalog, and derive the single-epoch alpha_ox indices. We use ensemble structure functions to analyse multi-epoch data. We confirm the anticorrelation of alpha_ox with L_UV, and do not find any evidence of a dependence of alpha_ox on z. The dispersion in our simultaneous data (0.12) is not significantly smaller than in previous non-simultaneous studies, suggesting that "artificial alpha_ox variability" introduced by non-simultaneity is not the main cause of dispersion. "Intrinsic alpha_ox variability", i.e., the true variability of the X-ray to optical ratio, is instead important, and accounts for ~30% of the total variance, or more. "Inter-source dispersion", due to intrinsic differences in the average alpha_ox values from source to source, is also important. - Abstract
Background: To explore the role of preoperative MRI prostate shape in urinary incontinence after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). Methods: Patients were stratified into four groups based on the mpMRI prostatic apex shape: Group A (prostatic apex overlapping the membranous urethra anteriorly and posteriorly), Group B and C (overlap of the prostatic apex of the anterior or posterior membranous urethra, respectively) and Group D (no overlap). Preoperative variables and intraoperative data were compared. Continence recovery was defined as no pad/day or 1 safety pad/day by an outpatient evaluation performed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after RARP. Results: One hundred patients underwent RARP were classified as belonging to Group A (n= 30), Group B (n= 16), Group C (n= 14), and Group D (n= 40). Group D showed a significantly more favorable urinary continence recovery after RARP respect to all the other shapes presenting any forms of overlapping (HR = 1.9, 95% CI 1.2–3.1, p= 0.007). The estimated HR remained substantially unchanged after adjusting by age, body mass index, CCI, prostate volume, and bladder neck sparing (HR = 1.9, 95% CI 1.1–3.2, p= 0.016). The continence recovery median time was 9 months for Group A + B + C (95% CI 5–11) and 4 months for Group D (95% CI 2–6) (p= 0.023). Conclusion: Shape D showed a better continence recovery when compared to other shapes presenting any kind of overlapping of the prostatic apex over the membranous urethra.

Two single-case studies were carried out using different procedural and technological approaches to enable two adolescents with multiple disabilities to choose among environmental stimuli. Study I focused on replicating a recently developed procedure, which relied on samples of the auditory stimuli available as cues for choice responses. Study II assessed a new procedural and technical setup relying on the use of pictorial representations of the stimuli available as cues for choice responses. The auditory samples and the pictorial representations were presented through computer systems. The participants' choice responses relied on microswitches connected to the computer systems. The data of Study I fully supported previous findings with the same procedural approach. The participant learned to choose preferred stimuli and bypass nonpreferred ones. The data of Study II showed that the participant learned to concentrate his choice responses on a few stimuli, suggesting that these stimuli were actually preferred and that responding was purposeful. Implications of the results were discussed.

This study assessed a writing program with word prediction, which completed the writing of a word and spoke it out only when there was certainty that such a word was the correct one. The assessment was carried out with a young man with multiple disabilities, who typically used a word processing program without word prediction. The two programs were compared on the time required by the participant for writing general sentences, through a social validation assessment, and eventually a check on the participant's preference. Analysis showed the program with word prediction was significantly more effective in terms of the writing time, which was halved, and was deemed preferable by 40 raters (psychology students) involved in the social validation assessment and by the participant himself. Implications of the findings are discussed.

This study evaluated the extent to which two microswitches used as interfaces would enable a man with multiple disabilities and limited motor behavior to operate an electric door opener at the entrance of the day center that he attended. Analysis showed the man (a) learned to use the two microswitches, (b) preferred the microswitch placed at his wheelchair's footrest (which also allowed more effective responding) over the microswitch placed at his wheelchair's armrest, and (c) maintained his positive performance at the 1- and 2-mo. postintervention checks. The results were discussed from a technical and practical standpoint and in terms of implications for the quality of life of persons with disabilities.

Use of a mathematical model helps examine the function of venous capacity active changes in short-term cardiovascular homeostasis. The model represents the cardiovascular system as serially arranged compartments that synthesize the hemodynamic properties of the pulmonary arteries and veins. All the model parameters are based on physiological data. Simulations indicate that the experimental and model data agree well with each other.
