The quantum Josephson voltage standard is well established across the metrology community for many years. It relies on the synchronisation of the flux tunneling in the S/I/S Josepson junctions (JJ) with the microwave radiation (MW). The phenomenon is called the Shapiro steps. Together with the Quantum Hall resistance standard, the voltage standard forms the foundation of electrostatic metrology. The current is then defined as the ratio of the voltage and resistance. Realisation of the quantum current standard, would close the electrostatic metrological triangle of voltage-resistance-current. The current quantisation, the inverse Shapiro steps, was recently shown using the superconducting nanowires and small JJ. The effect is a synchronization of the MW with the Cooper pair tunnelling. This paves the way to combine the JJ voltage and current standards on the same chip and demonstrate feasibility of the multi-standard operation. We show the voltage and current quantization on the same chip up to frequency of 10 GHz, corresponding to the amplitudes 0.021 mV and 3.23 nA respectively. The accuracy of the voltage and current quantisation, however, is relatively low, 35 ppk and 100 ppk respectively. Synchronization of Bloch oscillations in small Josephson junctions (JJs) under microwave radiation, which leads to current quantization, has been proposed as an effect that is dual to the appearance of Shapiro steps. This current quantization was recently demonstrated in superconducting nanowires in a compact high-impedance environment. Direct observation of current quantization in JJs would cofirm the synchronization of Bloch oscillations with microwaves and help with the realisation of the metrological current standard. Here, we place JJs in a high-impedance environment and demonstrate dual Shapiro steps for frequencies up to 24 GHz (I=7.7 nA). Current quantization exists, however, only in a narrow range of JJ parameters. We carry out a systematic study to explain this by invoking the model of a JJ in the presence of thermal noise. The method proposed in [I.R. Khairulin et al., JETP Letters 117(9), 652 (2023)] for converting the linearly polarized radiation of high-order harmonics of an optical field into the circularly polarized in an optically modulated active medium of a plasma-based X-ray laser has been de-veloped. This method is extended to the case of finite width of spectral lines (finite pulse dura-tion) of high harmonic radiation and nonlinear interaction of radiation with matter. The trans-formation of the polarization of the harmonic field is achieved by introducing a phase shift of {\pi}/2 between its polarization components, parallel and orthogonal to the polarization of the modulating field, through resonant dispersion on the spectral wings of the induced gain lines of the active medium and is accompanied by an increase in the power of high harmonics. It is shown that for harmonics with a finite bandwidth, the polarization of the output radiation is non-uniform in time. The reasons for such non-uniformity are analyzed and the conditions for its minimization are found. The influence of nonlinearity and amplified spontaneous radiation of the active medium on the high-harmonic polarization is investigated. The possibilities for the experimental implementation of this effect in a neon-like active medium of a plasma X-ray laser based on Ti12+ ions with an unperturbed wavelength of the inverted transition at 32.6 nm are analyzed., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, 38 references

Grating couplers are widely used to couple waveguide modes with the far field. Their usefulness is determined not only by energy efficiency but also by additional supported functionality. In this paper, we demonstrate a plasmonic grating on a silicon nitride slab waveguide that couples both TE and TM waveguide modes with circularly polarized light in the far field. Specifically, we experimentally confirmed that circularly polarized light excites TE and TM modes propagating in opposite directions, and the direction is controlled by the handedness. The routing efficiency for normally incident light reaches up to 95%. The same structure operates in the outcoupling regime as well, demonstrating up to 97% degree of circular polarization, where the handedness is determined by the polarization and propagation direction of outcoupled modes. Our results pave the way for the realization of polarization-division multiplexers and demultiplexers, integrated circular polarization emitters, as well as detectors of the polarization state of the incident optical field.

Memristors are expected to form a major cornerstone in the upcoming renaissance of analog computing, owing to their very small spatial footprint and low power consumption. Due to the nature of their structure and operation, the response of a memristor is intrinsically tied to local variabilities in the device. This characteristic is amplified by currently employed semiconductor fabrication processes, which introduce spatial inhomogeneities into the structural fabric that makes up the layers of memristors. In this work, we propose a novel q-deformed current-voltage model for memristors based on the superstatistics framework, which allows the description of system-level responses while taking local variabilities into account. Applied on a Ag-Cu based synaptic memory cell, we demonstrate that our model has a 4-14% lower error than currently used models. Additionally, we show how the resulting q-parameter can be used to make statements about the internal makeup of the memristor, giving insights to spatial inhomogeneities and quality control., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, appendix

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) has emerged as an exciting new material with tunable electronic properties ranging from superconductivity to correlated insulating phases. But current methods of fabrication and identification of TBLG are painstaking and laborious. In this work, we combine Raman spectroscopy with the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) data clustering algorithm to identify areas with particular twist angles, from a TBLG sample with a mixture of orientations. We present two approaches to this cluster analysis: training the GMM on Raman parameters returned by peak fits, and on full Raman spectra with dimensionality reduced by principal component analysis. In both cases we demonstrate that GMM can identify regions of distinct twist angle from within Raman datacubes. We also show that once a model has been trained, and the identified clusters labelled, the model can be reapplied to new Raman scans to assess the similarity between the materials in the new region and the testing region. This could enable high-throughput fabrication of TBLG, by allowing computerised detection of particular twist angles from automated large-area scans.

We propose a method for amplifying a train of sub-femtosecond pulses of circularly or elliptically polarized extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation constituted by high-order harmonics of an infrared (IR) laser field, in a neon-like active medium of a plasma-based X-ray laser, additionally irradiated with a replica of a fundamental frequency IR field. It is shown that the ellipticity of the pulses can be maintained or increased during the amplification process. In [I.R. Khairulin et al., submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.] we propose a method for amplifying a train of sub-femtosecond pulses of circularly or elliptically polarized extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation, constituted by high-order harmonics of an infrared (IR) laser field, in a neon-like active medium of a plasma-based X-ray laser, additionally irradiated with a replica of a fundamental frequency laser field used to generate harmonics, and show the possibility of maintaining or enhancing the ellipticity of high-harmonic radiation during its amplification. In the present paper we describe this process in detail both for a single harmonic component and a sub-femtosecond pulse train formed by a set of harmonics. We derive the analytical theory and describe both analytically and numerically the evolution of the high-harmonic field during its propagation through the medium. We discuss also the possibility of an experimental implementation of the suggested technique in an active medium of an X-ray laser based on neon-like Ti^{12+} ions irradiated by an IR laser field with a wavelength of 3.9 microns., Comment: 41 pages, 18 figures

Graphene has shown great potential for modulating infrared (IR) light in devices as small as 350 nm. At these length scales, nanoscale features of devices, and their interaction with light, can be expected to play a significant role in device performance. Bubbles in van der Waals heterostructures are one such feature, which have recently attracted considerable attention thanks to their ability to modify the optoelectronic properties of 2D materials through strain. Here we use scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (sSNOM) to measure the nanoscale IR response from a network of variously shaped bubbles in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-encapsulated graphene. We show that within individual bubbles there are distinct domains with strongly enhanced IR absorption. We correlate this with strain in the graphene, found with confocal Raman microscopy and vector decomposition analysis. This reveals intricate and varied strain configurations, in which bubbles of different shape induce more bi- or uniaxial strain configurations. Ridges in the bubbles, seen by atomic force microscopy (AFM), coincide with the domain boundaries, which leads us to attribute the domains to nanoscale strain differences in the graphene. This reveals pathways towards future strain-based graphene IR devices.

We use confocal Raman microscopy and modified vector analysis methods to investigate the nanoscale origin of strain and carrier concentration in exfoliated graphene-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures on silicon dioxide (SiO2). Two types of heterostructures are studied: graphene on SiO2 partially coved by hBN, and graphene fully encapsulated between two hBN flakes. We extend the vector analysis methods to produce spatial maps of the strain and doping variation across the heterostructures. This allows us to visualise and directly quantify the much-speculated effect of the environment on carrier concentration as well as strain in graphene. Moreover, we demonstrate that variations in strain and carrier concentration in graphene arise from nanoscale features of the heterostructures such as fractures, folds and bubbles trapped between layers. For bubbles in hBN-encapsulated graphene, hydrostatic strain is shown to be greatest at bubble centres, whereas the maximum of carrier concentration is localised at bubble edges. Raman spectroscopy is shown to be a non-invasive tool for probing strain and doping in graphene, which could prove useful for engineering of two-dimensional devices., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

We report coherent frequency conversion in the gigahertz range via three-wave mixing on a single artificial atom in open space. All frequencies involved are in vicinity of transition frequencies of the three-level atom. A cyclic configuration of levels is therefore essential, which we have realised with an artificial atom based on the flux qubit geometry. The atom is continuously driven at two transition frequencies and we directly measure the coherent emission at the sum or difference frequency. Our approach enables coherent conversion of the incoming fields into the coherent emission at a designed frequency in prospective devices of quantum electronics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Domain wall probes (DW-probes) were custom-made by modifying standard commercial magnetic force microscopy (MFM) probes using focused ion beam lithography. Excess of magnetic coating from the probes was milled out, leaving a V-shaped nanostructure on one face of the probe apex. Owing to the nanostructure's shape anisotropy, such probe has four possible magnetic states depending on the direction of the magnetization along each arm of the V-shape. Two states of opposite polarity are characterised by the presence of a geometrically constrained DW, pinned at the corner of the V-shape nanostructure. In the other two states, the magnetization curls around the corner with opposite chirality. Electron holography studies, supported by numerical simulations, demonstrate that a strong stray field emanates from the pinned DW, whilst a much weaker stray field is generated by the curling configurations. Using in situ MFM, we show that the magnetization states of the DW-probe can be easily controlled by applying an external magnetic field, thereby demonstrating that this type of probe can be used as a switchable tool with a low or high stray field intensity. We demonstrate that DW-probes enable acquiring magnetic images with a negligible interference with the sample magnetization, similar to that of commercial low moment probes, but with a higher magnetic contrast. In addition, the DW-probe in the curl state provides complementary information about the in-plane component of the sample's magnetization, which is not achievable by standard methods and provides additional information about the stray fields, e.g. as when imaging DWs.

An efficient method to coherently control the waveforms of gamma-photons has been proposed and experimentally realized. It is based on the resonant interaction of gamma-photons with an ensemble of nuclei with modulated frequency of the quantum transition. In particular, the temporal compression of an individual gamma-photon into coherent ultrashort pulse train has been demonstrated. The developed technique is expected to give a strong impetus on emerging fields of coherent and quantum gamma-optics, providing a basis for realization of the gamma-photon nuclear-ensemble interfaces and quantum interference effects at the nuclear gamma-ray transitions., Comment: 12 pages, 3 pages Supplementary information, and 4 figures
