Resumo O presente trabalho reflete as experiencias vivenciadas pelos autores em pesquisas cientificas no tema da Historia Institucional e as discussoes mobilizadas no Grupo de Estudos em Historia da Matematica e Educacao Matematica da Universidade Estadual de Maringa (GHMEM-UEM) e tem por objetivo caracterizar metodologicamente o campo de pesquisa em Historia Institucional no âmbito da Historia da Educacao Matematica no Brasil. Para tanto, valemo-nos dos pressupostos metodologicos da pesquisa de natureza qualitativa. O estudo caracteriza-se, tambem, pela abordagem holistica, abrangente, detalhada e amparada em um contexto determinado pela problematica, baseado em fragmentos historicos. Alem disso, utilizamos a tecnica de revisao de literatura, buscando trabalhos afins, para situarmos este trabalho em um processo de producao de conhecimento da comunidade cientifica de modo a coletar informacoes nas quais se amplia o contexto para se enxergar a problematica. A partir do levantamento bibliografico realizado, caracterizamos cinco campos de investigacao no tema da Historia Institucional, a saber: Historia Institucional via personas; Historia Institucional via matriz curricular; Historia Institucional via contextos; Historia Institucional via influencias e intercâmbios; e Historia Institucional via atas e/ou documentos. As nossas analises evidenciaram que o campo Historia Institucional via personas foi escolhido por todas as pesquisas consultadas, o que evidencia as potencialidades da Historia Oral. Abstract This study reflects the experience of the authors in researching Institutional History and the discussions raised in the History of Mathematics and Mathematical Education Study Group of Maringa State University (GHMEM-UEM) and aims to methodologically characterize Institutional History within the context of the History of Mathematical Education in Brazil. To this end, we use the methodological assumptions of qualitative research, as it rests on understanding, interpretation and data analysis. It is also characterized by a detailed, comprehensive, and holistic approach that is supported in a context determined by the problem, based on historical fragments. In addition, we use the literature review technique to place this work in a knowledge production process of the scientific community, in which the context is broadened in order to collect information to see the problem, and to look for similar works in the literature. Grounded in the bibliographic survey carried out, we characterize five research fields in Institutional History: Institutional History via personas; Institutional History via curriculum matrices; Institutional History via contexts; Institutional History via influences and exchanges; and Institutional History via minutes and/or documents. Our analyses show that Institutional History via personas was chosen by all the research consulted, which highlights the potential of Oral History. Tambien se caracteriza por un enfoque holistico, integral, detallado y sustentado en un contexto determinado por la problematica, a partir de fragmentos historicos. Ademas, utilizamos la tecnica de revision de la literatura para ubicar este trabajo en un proceso de produccion de conocimiento de la comunidad cientifica con el objetivo de recolectar informacion en la que se amplia el contexto para ver el problema, buscando trabajos similares en la literatura. A partir del estudio bibliografico realizado, caracterizamos cinco campos de investigacion sobre el tema de la Historia Institucional. Son ellos: Historia Institucional via personas; Historia institucional via matriz curricular; Historia institucional a partir de contextos; Historia institucional a partir de influencias e intercambios e Historia Institucional a partir de Actas y / o documentos. Nuestros analisis mostraron que el campo Historia Institucional via personas fue elegido por todas las investigaciones consultadas, lo que destaca el potencial de la Historia Oral. Este trabalho de cunho qualitativo está inserido em uma pesquisa de doutorado finalizada em dezembro de 2019 no âmbito do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação para a Ciência e a Matemática (PCM) da Universidade Estadual de Maringá (UEM). Na referida pesquisa o foco foiinvestigar, historicamente, aspectos profissionais, a produção acadêmica do português João Remy Teixeira Freire (Remy Freire) e as suas contribuições para a Matemática e a Educação Matemática no Paraná. Para este texto, temos por objetivo explorar as correspondências de Remy Freire para Newton da Costa. Para tanto, utilizamos a pesquisa documental para embasar metodologicamente a transcrição e a análise de dez cartas de Remy Freire para Newton da Costa. As cartas estão localizadas dentre os documentos do Fundo Newton Carneiro Affonso da Costa sob responsabilidade dos Arquivos Históricos do Centro de Lógica, Epistemologia e História da Ciência da Universidade de Campinas (UNICAMP). De acordo com as nossas análises, observamos um perfil crítico, político e multifacetado de Remy Freire, no que tange nosso olhar para o cenário brasileiro e português da época e as múltiplas áreas de domínio de estudos e de sua atuação profissional.

An accurate and efficient statistical method for genetic evaluation is a key requirement for progress in any breeding program. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the performance of Frequentist and Bayesian inferences for repeated measures analysis in Jatropha curcas breeding. To this end, 730 individuals from 73 half-sib families were evaluated for grain yield trait, over six crop years. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses were made considering repeatability models with different residual variance structures. Variance components were estimated through restricted maximum likelihood (REML) and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). Genetic values were predicted through best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) and estimated through MCMC. Variance components and genetic and non-genetic parameters estimated by the Frequentist inference presented values similar to those estimated by the Bayesian inference. The selective accuracy presented high magnitude (0.84) by the Frequentist and Bayesian inferences, indicating high reliability. Confidence and highest posterior density (HPD) intervals were similar for the genetic parameters, however the HPD intervals range was slightly short. This study highlighted the importance of testing the residual variance structure and pointed out that the Frequentist and Bayesian inferences presented similar results when using non-informative prior. Then, both inferences can be efficiently applied in Jatropha curcas breeding.

International audience; Respiratory infections remain a major global health concern. Tuberculosis is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide, while infections with Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria are rising globally. Recent advances in human tissue modelling offer a unique opportunity to grow different human "organs" in vitro, including the human airway, that faithfully recapitulate lung architecture and function. Here, we have explored the potential of human airway organoids (AOs) as a novel system in which to assess the very early steps of mycobacterial infection. We reveal that Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and Mycobacterium abscessus (Mabs) mainly reside as extracellular bacteria and infect epithelial cells with very low efficiency. While the AO microenvironment was able to control, but not eliminate Mtb, Mabs thrives. We demonstrate that AOs responded to infection by modulating cytokine, antimicrobial peptide and mucin gene expression. Given the importance of myeloid cells in mycobacteria infection, we co-cultured infected AOs with human monocyte-derived macrophages and found that these cells to interact with the organoid epithelium. We conclude that adult stem cell (ASC)-derived AOs can be used to decipher very early events of mycobacteria infection in human settings thus offering new avenues for fundamental and therapeutic research.

The dissertation proposes to analyze the spread of disinformation by the Jair Bolsonaro government about the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil. O recorte analisa o discurso político de postagens difundidas pelo presidente da república, integrantes e aliados do governo, durante o início da pandemia, de janeiro a março de 2020, até o acontecimento #bolsonaroday, no Twitter, no primeiro de abril – dia da mentira. While the World Health Organization recommended social isolation and prevention measures, the Jair Bolsonaro government tried to minimize the importance of the pandemic and the risks of the disease with misinformation, a characteristic of post- truth, as pointed out by Wicholwski (2017). The circulation of these contents took place in the context of the eye of a hurricane called “infodemia”, characterized by the uncontrolled spread and large proportions of uninformative contents associated with the pandemic and its consequences. This strategy adds to a history of aggressive, polarized and fake news propagator discourse adopted by the political figure of Jair Bolsonaro, who served as federal deputy for nearly three decades before becoming head of state. This climate of polarization and clashes is reaffirmed during the presidential election campaign and the government itself, characterized by the constant practice of polemical statements, dissemination of lies and controversial actions that mobilize sociopolitical crises. The research cutout involves the selection of posts made on social networks and traditional media by the political actors involved, characterized as uninformative content based on fact-checking mechanisms from the agencies Comprova, Fato or Fake and Lupa, as well as fact- checking own. We selected among the contents checked, those that are directly related to the Covid-19 context and organized them in a timeline. Next, we analyzed the typology of fake news based on the categories of Wardle (2017) where we found the presence of misleading, false and out-of-context content, among other types. We elaborated a categorization of the themes present in the content, according to Bardin (1977) and we also verified the recurrence of misinformation with an emphasis on a tone modulation between denial and the normalization of the crisis throughout the period. Through the analysis, it is also observed that the Bolsonaro government adopts the clash through misinformation as a discursive strategy characterized by the polarization of “opponents” in line with recommendations from health agencies and discrediting the press. O recorte analisa o discurso político de postagens difundidas pelo presidente da república, integrantes e aliados do governo, durante o início da pandemia, de janeiro a março de 2020, até o acontecimento #bolsonaroday, no Twitter, no primeiro de abril – dia da mentira. Enquanto a Organização Mundial de Saúde recomendava o isolamento social e medidas de prevenção, o governo de Jair Bolsonaro tentava minimizar a importância da pandemia e os riscos da doença com desinformação, uma característica da pós- verdade, como aponta Wicholwski (2017). A circulação destes conteúdos se deu no contexto do olho de um furacão denominado “infodemia”, caracterizada pela propagação descontrolada e em grandes proporções de conteúdos desinformativos associados à pandemia e de suas consequências. Esta estratégia agrega-se a um histórico de discurso agressivo, polarizado e propagador de fake news adotado pela figura política de Jair Bolsonaro, que atuou como deputado federal durante quase três décadas antes de se tornar chefe de estado. Este clima de polarização e embates se reafirma durante a campanha das eleições presidenciais e o próprio governo, caracterizado pela constante prática de declarações polêmicas, disseminação de mentiras e ações controversas que mobilizam crises sociopolíticas. O recorte da pesquisa envolve a seleção de postagens realizadas nas redes sociais e na mídia tradicional pelos atores políticos envolvidos, caracterizadas quanto ao conteúdo desinformativo a partir de mecanismos de fact-checking das agências Comprova, Fato ou Fake e Lupa e também de fact-checking próprio. Selecionamos dentre os conteúdos checados, aqueles que possuem relação direta com o contexto da Covid-19 e os organizamos em uma linha do tempo. Na sequência, realizamos análise da tipologia das fake news a partir das categorias de Wardle (2017) onde constatamos a presença de conteúdo enganoso, falso e fora de contexto, entre outros tipos. Elaboramos uma categorização dos temas presentes no conteúdo, segundo Bardin (1977) e verificamos também a recorrência da desinformação com ênfase para uma modulação de tom entre o negacionismo e a normalização da crise ao longo do período. Através da análise, também se observa que o governo Bolsonaro adota o embate por meio da desinformação como estratégia discursiva caracterizada pela polarização aos “opositores” alinhados com recomendações de órgãos de saúde e descredibilização da imprensa.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of feed restriction on some physical and blood parameters in horses kept outdoors under natural conditions. Twenty horses were deprived of food for 48 h. They were closely monitored and examined, and blood samples were taken at the beginning (0) of the experiment and 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 hours afterward. During the experimental period, the control group (12 animals) had free access to water and hay, while the restricted group had free access to water only. Data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures, and statistical significance was P ≤ 0.05. The horses tolerated feed restriction without complications. Feed restriction had no effect on body mass and body condition score, heart rate, respiratory rate, capillary filling time and body temperature. Tuberculosis, one of the oldest human pathogens remains a major global health threat. Recent advances in organoid technology offer a unique opportunity to grow different human “organs” in vitro, including the human airway, that faithfully recapitulate tissue architecture and function. We have explored the potential of human airway organoids (AOs) as a novel system in which to model tuberculosis infection. To this end, we adapted biosafety containment level 3–approved procedures to allow successful microinjection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, into AOs. We reveal that mycobacteria infected epithelial cells with low efficiency, and that the organoid microenvironment was able to control, but not eliminate the pathogen. We demonstrate that AOs responded to infection by inducing cytokine and antimicrobial peptide production, and inhibiting mucins. Given the importance of myeloid cells in tuberculosis infection, we co-cultured mycobacteria-infected organoids with human monocyte-derived macrophages, and found that these cells were recruited to the organoid epithelium. We conclude that adult stem cell–derived airway organoids can be used to model early events of tuberculosis infection and offer new avenues for fundamental and therapeutic research.

O Seminário Nacional de História da Ciência e Tecnologia é um evento promovido pela Sociedade Brasileira de História da Ciência – SBHC, desde o ano de 1986. Considerado o mais antigo e relevante na área devido a sua abrangência, reúne pesquisadores de diversas especialidades, a fim de discutir temáticas relacionadas a História da Ciência e da Tecnologia. No âmbito desse evento, simpósios acontecem de modo a vincular pesquisadores de áreas comuns, como por exemplo, pesquisadores da área da História da Matemática. Nesse sentido, no presente artigo temos por objetivo analisar os cenários das pesquisas em História da Matemática a partir dos trabalhos publicados nos Anais do 16º Seminário Nacional de História da Ciência e da Tecnologia, ocorrido na cidade Campina Grande – PB, no ano de 2018. Para tanto, identificamos os trabalhos vinculados ao simpósio: A investigação científica em História da Matemática no Brasil e classificamos as pesquisas em conformidade aos campos investigativos História da Matemática, História da Educação Matemática e História na Educação Matemática. A análise temática dos trabalhos sugere em número, uma tendência para pesquisas que congregam o campo da História da Educação Matemática. Logo, sugere-se que essas pesquisas contribuem para consolidação desse campo de pesquisa no Brasil, assim como os demais trabalhos, que embora em menor número corroboram para o fortalecimento da pesquisa histórica de conceitos e na inserção de aspectos históricos da Matemática em sala de aula. No que concerne a identificação dos trabalhos, verificamos que são produções que contribuem com a constituição e o desenvolvimento histórico da Matemática, considerando os diferentes vieses que assumem dada sua abordagem específica no campo de pesquisa.

This study is "aimed" to evaluate and compare the efficacy of flunixin meglumine (FM), firocoxib (FX), and meloxicam (MX) after castration of horses. Thirty horses were submitted to open castration and divided into three groups (n = 10) depending on the anti-inflammatory drug administered: group I (GI) (FM, 1.1 mg kg1, IV, once a day [SID], 5 days); group II (GII) (FX, 0.1 mg kg1, IV, SID, 5 days), and group III (GIII) (MX, 0.6 mg kg1, IV, SID, 5 days). Clinical, behavioral, and hematological parameters and the peritoneal fluid (PF) were evaluated before (day [D] 0) and 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days afterward. In the postoperative, scores of limb rigidity and prepuce edema of animals of GII and GIII were greater than those of GI. Tachycardia was observed in the horses of GII and GIII and hyperthermia in GIII. An increase in the number of leukocytes, neutrophils, and monocytes without exceeding the reference values and hyperfibrinogenemia was observed in the animals of GI (D7), GII (D1-D7), and GIII (D7). There was reduction in serum protein after castration, together with an increase of this in the PF of the animals of the three groups. The PF on D0 was straw yellow and limpid, became reddish and cloudy on D1, and then gradually moved toward its normal color on the ensuing days, but without returning to normal on D7 in any of the groups. The results showed that castration triggers significant clinical and laboratory changes and that FM, FX, and MX are equally effective in controlling pain and inflammation in horses after castration; however, FM was more advantageous.

Leukocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1) is the most widely expressed member of the β2 integrin family of cell-cell adhesion molecules. Although LFA-1 is thought to regulate multiple aspects of T cell immunity, its role in the response of CD8+ T cells to viral infections remains unclear. Indeed, compelling clinical evidence shows that loss of LFA-1 function predisposes to infection in humans but animal models show limited to no susceptibility to infection. Here, we addressed this conundrum in a mouse model of infection with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), where CD8+ T cells are necessary and sufficient to confer protection. To this end, we followed the fate and function of wild-type and LFA-1 deficient virus-specific CD8+ T cells and assessed the effect of blocking anti-LFA-1 monoclonal antibody in the outcome of infection. Our analysis of viral clearance and T cell responses using transcriptome profiling reveals a role for LFA-1 as a gatekeeper of effector T cell survival and dysfunction that when defective can predispose to LCMV infection.

Inflammasome-induced pyroptosis comprises a key cell-autonomous immune process against intracellular bacteria, namely the generation of dying cell structures. These so-called pore-induced intracellular traps (PITs) entrap and weaken intracellular microbes. However, the immune importance of pyroptosis against extracellular pathogens remains unclear. Here, we report that Type-3 secretion system (T3SS)-expressingPseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa) escaped PIT immunity by inducing a NLRC4 inflammasome-dependent macrophage pyroptosis response in the extracellular environment. To the contrary, phagocytosis ofSalmonellaTyphimurium promoted NLRC4-dependent PIT formation and the subsequent bacterial caging. Remarkably, T3SS-deficientPseudomonaswere efficiently sequestered within PIT-dependent caging, which favored exposure to neutrophils. Conversely, both NLRC4 and caspase-11 deficient mice presented increased susceptibility to T3SS-deficientP. aeruginosachallenge, but not to T3SS-expressingP. aeruginosa.Overall, our results uncovered thatP. aeruginosauses its T3SS to overcome inflammasome-triggered pyroptosis, which is primarily effective against intracellular invaders.ImportanceAlthough innate immune components confer host protection against infections, the opportunistic bacterial pathogenPseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa) exploits the inflammatory reaction to thrive. Specifically the NLRC4 inflammasome, a crucial immune complex, triggers an Interleukin (IL)-1β and -18 deleterious host response toP. aeruginosa. Here, we provide evidence that, in addition to IL-1 cytokines,P. aeruginosaalso exploits the NLRC4 inflammasome-induced pro-inflammatory cell death, namely pyroptosis, to avoid efficient uptake and killing by macrophages. Therefore, our study reveals that pyroptosis-driven immune effectiveness mainly depends onP. aeruginosalocalization. This paves the way toward our comprehension of the mechanistic requirements for pyroptosis effectiveness upon microbial infections and may initiate targeted approaches in order to ameliorate the innate immune functions to infections.Graphical abstractMacrophages infected with T3SS-expressingP. aeruginosadie in a NLRC4-dependent manner, which allows bacterial escape from PIT-mediated cell-autonomous immunity and neutrophil efferocytosis. Resumo A área da hemoterapia necessita de testes de compatibilidade sanguínea confiáveis, como a tipagem sanguínea, para se evitarem possíveis reações transfusionais, mas em felinos é também importante para se evitar a isoeritrólise neonatal. Transfusões sanguíneas realizadas entre felinos doadores e receptores que não possuem compatibilidade sanguínea podem refletir em reação transfusional aguda, particularmente severa quando o sangue tipo A é transfundido em um gato tipo B, pois geralmente este último possui altos níveis de aloanticorpos de ocorrência natural. Portanto, o conhecimento da frequência dos tipos sanguíneos da população de gatos de uma região pode auxiliar na determinação dos riscos de reações transfusionais e de ocorrência de isoeritrólise neonatal. Tais riscos podem ser prevenidos com a tipagem sanguínea em casos de transfusão. Foram coletadas 100 amostras sanguíneas de felinos para a realização da tipagem sanguínea com plasmas reagentes anti-A e anti-B conhecidas e titulações de aloanticorpos anti-A e anti-B dos plasmas armazenados. A distribuição das frequências dos grupos sanguíneos foi 96% de felinos com tipo sanguíneo A e 4% de felinos com tipo sanguíneo B, não sendo encontrado na amostra populacional de felino tipo AB. Há um grande risco de reação adversa através da transfusão sanguínea randomizada entre felinos não tipados previamente. Abstract Hemotherapy requires reliable blood compatibility tests, such as blood typing, to avoid possible transfusion reactions in cats. However, it is also important to avoid neonatal isoerythrolysis. When blood transfusions are performed between incompatible feline donors and recipients, they may develop acute transfusion reactions, especially severe when type A blood is transfused into a type B cat because it has high levels of anti-A alloantibodies. Therefore, knowing on the blood type frequency in feline population of some region can help to determine the transfusion reaction risks and the occurrence of neonatal isoerythrolysis. Addicionally, such risks may be prevented through blood typing, in cases of transfusion. One hundred feline blood samples were collected and anti-A and anti-B blood reagent typing tests were performed, plus titration of alloantibodies of stored plasma. These tests showed a 96% frequency of type A blood and only 4% of type B blood among tested cats. We did not find any AB type blood cat. There is a great risk of adverse reactions after random blood transfusions between non-typed cats.

Corresponde a uma pesquisa de natureza qualitativa, do tipo descritiva e de estratégias bibliográfica e documental. Temos por objetivo geral compor uma narrativa histórico-biográfica sobre Remy Freire e as suas contribuições para a Matemática e para a Educação Matemática no Paraná. Além disso, no desenvolvimento deste trabalho, procuramos responder a pergunta: Que contribuições para o desenvolvimento da Matemática e da Educação Matemática no Paraná estão atreladas a Remy Freire e ao seu contexto histórico? Segundo o Decreto de naturalização brasileira de 17 de novembro de 1953, Remy Freire nasceu em Lisboa, Portugal, em 24 de novembro de 1917 e era filho de Garibaldi Alves Freire e Laura da Silva Teixeira Freire. Era formado em Ciências Econômicas e Financeiras pela Universidade de Lisboa, onde também fez seu doutoramento em Ciências Econômicas. Além disso, era doutor em Estatística pela Universidade de Paris. Remy Freire veio de Portugal para o Brasil em 1952, foi um dos idealizadores para a criação da Sociedade Paranaense de Matemática (SPM) e difusor da Matemática em Curitiba, onde ficou estabelecido, de acordo com as nossas análises, até 1955 quando foi para o Chile ocupar uma posição na Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU). As nossas análises evidenciaram que Remy Freire atuou e contribuiu para a constituição de um ambiente matemático em Curitiba e, consequentemente, para o desenvolvimento da Matemática no Brasil. Além disso, observamos um perfil crítico, político e multifacetado do matemático, ao olhar para o cenário brasileiro e português da época e as múltiplas áreas de domínio de estudos e de sua atuação profissional. Remy Freire foi demitido de suas funções de professor extraordinário do Instituto Superior de Ciências Econômicas e Financeiras em Portugal em 18 de junho de 1947. Durante sua permanência em Curitiba, contribuiu para a criação da Sociedade Paranaense de Matemática (SPM) e de um núcleo matemático atualizado para a época, por fim, conseguiu sua naturalização brasileira publicada no Diário Oficial de 20 de novembro de 1953. Remy Freire mobilizou esforços para constituir um ambiente matemático em Curitiba como cursos ministrados por ele e por matemáticos convidados de outras instituições, como o Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) e a Faculdade Nacional de Filosofia do Rio de Janeiro; a aquisição de obras matemáticas para a SPM; as parcerias estabelecidas com instituições do Brasil e outros países; o envio de alunos para outras universidades e as discussões de temáticas relevantes para a época promovidas pela SPM. Entendemos que o perfil catalisador de Remy Freire se aplica em decorrência das ações que marcaram a sua trajetória, desde as suas contribuições para a criação do Centro de Estudos de Matemáticas aplicadas à Economia, ao Jornal Gazeta de Matemática e a Sociedade Portuguesa de Matemática, em Portugal, e na criação da Sociedade Paranaense de Matemática e Centro de Ensino e Pesquisas de Matemática e Estatística, pioneirismo aos ministrar os cursos de Teoria de Matrizes e Lógica Matemática e o intercâmbio com outras Instituições, no Brasil. ABSTRACT: This work is the result of doctoral research conducted in the Graduate Program in Education for Science and Mathematics (Pós-Graduação em Educação para a Ciência e a Matemática) (PCM) of the State University of Maringá (Universidade Estadual de Maringá) (UEM). The study constitutes qualitative descriptive research with bibliographic and documentary strategies. The main purpose is to compose a historical-biographical narrative about Remy Freire and his contributions to mathematics and mathematical education in Paraná state (Brazil). In addition, while developing this work, we try to address the question: What contributions to mathematics and mathematical education in Paraná state are liked to Remy Freire and his historical context? According to his Brazilian naturalization document (November 17, 1953), he was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on November 24, 1917 and is the son of Garibaldi Alves Freire and Laura da Silva Teixeira Freire. He graduated in Economic and Financial Sciences from the University of Lisbon, where he also did his PhD in Economic Sciences. In addition, he had a PhD in Statistics from the University of Paris. Remy Freire came from Portugal to Brazil in 1952 and was one of the founders of the Paraná Mathematical Society (Sociedade Paranaense de Matemática) (SPM), where he led a mathematical group. According to our analyses, he is considered a disseminator of mathematics in Curitiba, where he stayed until 1955, when he went to Chile to take up a position in the United Nations (UN). Analyses showed that Remy Freire acted and contributed to the formation of a mathematical environment in Curitiba and, consequently, the development of mathematics in Brazil. In addition, he presented a critical, political and multifaceted profile in Brazil and Portugal in his studies and professional practice. Remy Freire was dismissed from his position as professor at the Higher Education Institute of Economic and Financial Sciences in Portugal on June 18, 1947. His Brazilian naturalization was made official (published in the Diário Oficial) on November 20, 1953. Remy Freire mobilized efforts to establish a mathematical environment in Curitiba by teaching courses and inviting mathematicians from other institutions, such as the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada) (IMPA) and the National Faculty of Philosophy of Rio de Janeiro, and by acquiring mathematical books and papers for SPM, establishing partnerships with institutions in Brazil and other countries, sending students to other universities, and promoting discussions of relevant themes. He was a catalyst for change in the mathematical environment in Curitiba as a result of the actions he took during his trajectory, from his contributions to the creation of the Center for Mathematical Studies applied to Economics, the journal Gazeta de Matemática, and the Portuguese Mathematical Society, in Portugal, to his contributions to the Paraná Mathematical Society, the Center for the Teaching and Research of Mathematics and Statistics, the pioneering of the teaching of courses of Matrix Theory and Logic Mathematics, and exchange with other institutions, in Brazil. 123 f. : il. figs. tabs.

This study is the result of a master’s thesis of the Graduate Program in Education for Science and Mathematics, PCM-UEM. The goal was to historically investigate the process of creating the course of mathematics at the State University of Maringa and the development of the course in the first years in the period between 1969 and 1982. In this article, we aimed to present the historical narrative of the course of mathematics of UEM, built in the master’s thesis. This work is inserted in the subject of History of Mathematics in Brazil and the presented narrative is structured through three intertwinedperspectives: documentary, oral and literature. Our analyses showed that the course of Mathematics at UEM was created to help in the development and visibility of the city of Maringá, to create an opening for the engineering courses and to remedy gaps of teachers in secondary education in the region at that time. El presente trabajo es resultado de una disertación de máster vinculada al Programa de Postgrado en Educación para la Ciencia y las Matemáticas PCM-UEM. El objetivo en aquella investigación fue estudiar históricamente el proceso de creación del curso de matemáticas de la Universidad Estatal de Maringá y el desarrollo del curso en sus primeros años en un período comprendido entre 1969 y 1982. En este artículo, el objetivo es presentar la narración histórica del curso de matemáticas de la UEM construida en la disertación. Este trabajo está insertado en el tema de la historia de la matemática en Brasil y la narración presentada es estructurada por medio del entrelazamiento de tres perspectivas: la documental, la oral y la bibliográfica. Nuestros análisis evidencian que el curso de matemáticas de la UEM fue creado para ayudar en el desarrollo y en la visibilidad de la ciudad de Maringá, generar una apertura para los cursos de ingeniería y subsanar lagunas de profesores de la enseñanza secundaria de la región en aquella época. O presente trabalho é resultado de uma dissertação de mestrado vinculada ao Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação para a Ciência e a Matemática PCM-UEM. Neste artigo o objetivo é apresentar a narrativa histórica do curso de matemática da UEM construída na dissertação. Este trabalho está inserido no tema da história da matemática no Brasil e a narrativa apresentada é estruturada por meio do entrelaçamento de três perspectivas: a documental, a oral e a bibliográfica. As nossas análises evidenciam que o curso de matemática da UEM foi criado para ajudar no desenvolvimento e na visibilidade da cidade de Maringá, gerar uma abertura para os cursos de engenharia e sanar lacunas de professores do ensino secundário da região naquela época.

RESUMO: No Brasil, até o ano 2000, os agentes riquetsiais em felinos domésticos eram poucos conhecidos, existindo somente relatos esporádicos de Ehrlichia sp. As recentes pesquisas envolvendo biologia molecular e agentes riquetsiais confirmam a ideia de que estes agentes estão presentes nesses animais e, por este motivo, demonstram a necessidade de estudos mais detalhados no Brasil. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi a caracterização dos agentes da família Anaplasmataceae que acometem os felinos domésticos e esclarecer a importância dos felinos na cadeia epidemiológica das doenças riquetsiais por métodos moleculares e sorológicos associando a presença das doenças aos parâmetros clínicos e laboratoriais. Foram obtidas amostras sanguíneas de 60 felinos domésticos, independentes de sanidade, provenientes de atendimentos clínicos. Destas amostras foram realizados hemograma e bioquímica sérica, e os dados foram utilizados para preenchimento da ficha laboratorial. As amostras foram processadas para obtenção de concentração de células e soro, para realização da reação em cadeia pela polimerase (PCR) e reação por imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI), respectivamente, para identificação de agentes da família Anaplasmataceae. Os dados foram utilizados para análise descritiva para formação de frequências epidemiológicas e para realização de testes não-paramétricos pelo Qui-quadrado de Pearson (p≤5%) associando as alterações laboratoriais às infecções por Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys e Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Os resultados obtidos revelaram a presença de 33,33% de agentes Anaplamastaceae na amostra populacional, sendo 8,33% para E. canis, 20% para A. platys e 10% para A. phagocytophilum. Foram realizadas as sorologias das amostras, pela imunofluorescência indireta, para verificação de amostras reagentes para A. phagocytophilum, sendo 8,33% amostras reagentes na amostra populacional. As alterações clínicas e laboratoriais mais frequentes em pacientes positivos por agentes Anaplasmataceae foram letargia, linfadenomegalia, mucosas pálidas, desidratação, trombocitopenia, hiperglobulinemia e hipoalbuminemia. Destes dados foram realizadas as correlações não paramétricas e não foram verificadas dependências das alterações laboratoriais com a presença de animais positivos para agentes Anaplasmataceae. A identificação dos agentes E. canis e A. platys visa esclarecer a doença na região, sendo instrumento de orientação da doença pelo médico veterinário ao proprietário para que tenha medidas adequadas de tratamento e prevenção. A presença de agentes A. phagocytophilum é considerada, sem dúvidas, uma notificação importante devido ao potencial zoonótico. ABSTRACT: In Brazil, by the year 2000, rickettsioses in domestic cats were little known and there were only sporadic reports of Ehrlichia sp. Recent research involving molecular biology and rickettsioses confirm the notion of the presence of theses agents in cats and show the need for more studies in Brazil. The objective of this paper was to characterize agents belonging to the Anaplasmataceae family that affect domestic cats and to clarify the importance of cats in the epidemiology of rickettsioses by molecular and serological methods associating the presence of disease with clinical and laboratory parameters. Blood samples were obtained from 60 healthy domestic cats. Blood count and serum biochemical tests were performed, and the data were registered. The samples were processed to obtain cell concentration and serum to perform the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) respectively, in order to identify agents of the Anaplasmataceae family. The data were used for descriptive analysis to obtain frequencies and to perform non-parametric tests with the chi-square test (p≤5%), besides the laboratory findings of infection by Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Anaplasma platys. The results revealed that 33.33% of the agents belonged to the Anaplasmataceae family, 8.33% for E. canis, 20% for A. platys, and 10% for A. phagocytophilum. Serology samples were examined by indirect immunofluorescence to check samples reacting to A. phagocytophilum, with positive reaction of 8.33%. The most frequent clinical and laboratory findings in patients positive for Anaplasmataceae agents were lethargy, enlargement of lymph nodes, pale mucous membranes, dehydration, thrombocytopenia, hyperglobulinemia and hypoalbuminemia. These data had non-parametric correlation and the laboratory changes and presence of positive cats was not interdependent. Identification of E. canis and A. platys revealed the disease in the region of Campos dos Goytacazes/RJ. The presence of A. phagocytophilum is considered an important finding due to its zoonotic potential.

International audience; Tuberculosis (TB), caused by the airborne bacterial pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains a major source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. So far, the study of host-pathogen interactions in TB has mostly focused on the physiology and virulence of the pathogen, as well as, on the various innate and adaptive immune compartments of the host. Microbial organisms endogenous to our body, the so-called microbiota, interact not only with invading pathogens, but also with our immune system. Yet, the impact of the microbiota on host defense against M. tuberculosis remains poorly understood. In order to address this question, we adapted a robust and reproducible mouse model of microbial dysbiosis based on a combination of wide-spectrum antibiotics. We found that microbiota dysbiosis resulted in an increased early colonization of the lungs by M. tuberculosis during the first week of infection, correlating with an altered diversity of the gut microbiota during this time period. At the cellular level, no significant difference in the recruitment of conventional myeloid cells, including macrophages, dendritic cells and neutrophils, to the lungs could be detected during the first week of infection between microbiota-competent and-deficient mice. At the molecular level, microbiota depletion did not impact the global production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interferon (IFN)γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)α and interleukin (IL)-1β in the lungs. Strikingly, a reduced number of mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells, a population of innate-like lymphocytes whose development is known to depend on the host microbiota, was observed in the lungs of the antibiotics-treated animals after 1week of infection. These cells produced less IL-17A in antibiotics-treated mice. Notably, dysbiosis correction through the inoculation of a complex microbiota in antibiotics-treated animals reversed these phenotypes and improved the ability of MAIT cells to proliferate. Altogether, our results demonstrate that the host microbiota contributes to early protection of lung colonization by M. tuberculosis, possibly through sustaining the function(s) of MAIT cells. Our study calls for a better understanding of the impact of the microbiota on host-pathogen interactions in TB. Ultimately, this study may help to develop novel therapeutic approaches based on the use of beneficial microbes, or components thereof, to boost anti-mycobacterial immunity.

In this study, a 50-membered library of substituted 4-hydroxyquinolin-2(1H)-ones and two closely related analogues was designed, scored in-silico for drug likeness and subsequently synthesized. Thirteen derivatives, all sharing a common 3-phenyl substituent showed minimal inhibitory concentrations against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra below 10 mu M and against Mycobacterium bovis AN5A below 15 mu M but were inactive against faster growing mycobacterial species. None of these selected derivatives showed significant acute toxicity against MRC-5 cells or early signs of genotoxicity in the Vitotox (TM) assay at the active concentration range. The structure activity study relation provided some insight in the further favourable substitution pattern at the 4-hydroxyquinolin-2(1H)-one scaffold and finally 6-fluoro-4-hydroxy-3-phenylquinolin-2(1H)-one (38) was selected as the most promising member of the library with a MIC of 3.2 mu M and a CC50 against MRC-5 of 67.4 mu M. A oxigenação extracorpórea por membrana com desvio arterio-venoso (AV-ECMO), em seres humanos, é uma técnica de suporte à vida capaz de assumir em parte ou totalmente as funções dos pulmões, quando estes já não são capazes de promover uma adequada hematose. Para conhecer a viabilidade deste método em cães (Canis familiaris), o presente estudo aplicou a AV-ECMO em dez indivíduos adultos, sem raça definida, com uma expectativa de três horas de duração para cada experimento. No grupo 1 (n=4), ventilação mecânica e infusão contínua de dopamina foram associadas ao suporte extracorpóreo. No grupo 2 (n=6), nenhuma medida de terapia intensiva foi instituída concomitantemente à AV-ECMO. O comportamento dos parâmetros de gasometria e os níveis de lactato foram avaliados a cada 10 minutos e 1 hora, respectivamente, por meio de da avaliação de amostras sanguíneas arteriais. O suporte inotrópico foi capaz de promover uma melhor perfusão tecidual com sangue oxigenado, sugerida pelos níveis de lactato e pressão arterial média mensurados, assim como a hemogasometria revelou melhores resultados quando a ventilação mecânica foi utilizada simultaneamente à AV-ECMO. Portanto, aplicada conjuntamente com suporte da terapia intensiva, a AV-ECMO é uma técnica viável para o uso em cães com falência respiratória, refratária aos tratamentos convencionais. In humans, arteriovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (AV-ECMO) is a life support technique capable to assume in part or totally lungs functions, when these are not able to promote appropriated hematosis. To know the viability of this method in dogs (Canis familiaris), the present study applied AV-ECMO in ten adult mixed-breed dogs, with expected three hours of duration to each experiment. In Group 1 (n=4), mechanical ventilation and dopamine continuous infusion were associated with the extracorporeal support. In Group 2 (n=6), any other measure of intensive care was used concomitantly AV-ECMO. Blood gas analysis and lactate levels were evaluated every 10 minutes and one hour, respectively, from arterial blood samples. Inotropic support improved the blood flow through the circuit promoting a better tissue perfusion with oxygenated blood, suggested by the lactate and mean arterial pressure levels measured. Mechanical ventilation used simultaneously with AV-ECMO was able to further improve levels of blood gases. Therefore, if applied along intensive care support, AV-ECMO is a viable technique for use in dogs with respiratory failure refractory to conventional treatments.
