Heavy oils, due to their high viscosity, have greater viscous resistance to flow, requiring high pumping power for transport and increasing operating cost. As an alternative to minimize this problem, the core-flow technique emerged, which consists of injecting water simultaneously with the oil flow, causing the heavy oil to be surrounded by a layer of water and flowing in the center of the duct without touching the pipe wall, consequently reducing the friction pressure gradient. Thus, this work aims to numerically study the core-annular flow of oil, water and gas in a cylindrical duct with an elliptical cross-section, considering a three-dimensional, isothermal and incompressible flow. For the numerical solution of the governing equations, the software Ansys FLUENT 15.0 was used. It was found that the lubrication provided by the water on the duct wall reduced the pressure variation by 7.20 times compared to the heavy oil single-phase flow, proving the good efficiency of the core-flow technique.

The manufacture of ceramic brick goes through the stages of raw material extraction, clay homogenization, material conformation, drying and firing. Drying is the phase that needs greater care, as it involves removing part of the moisture from the brick, in order to preserve its quality after process. This work aims to predict heat and mass transfer in the drying of ceramic bricks in oven using computational fluid dynamics. Considering the constant thermophysical properties, a transient three-dimensional mathematical model was used to predict mass and energy transfer between the material and air during the process. Drying simulations at temperature of 100°C were performed with the air flow in the frontal direction to the ceramic brick holes and the results were compared with those obtained for the air flow in the perpendicular direction to the brick holes reported in the literature. It was found that the position of the brick in relation to the direction of air flow inside the oven affected directly the drying and heating kinetics, and the distribution of temperature and moisture content inside the brick. The positioning of the holes in the brick parallel to the direction of the air flow resulted in reduction at the drying time and, consequently, in energy savings in the process, more uniform drying, and improvement in the product quality.

In this paper, we cope with the problem of presents a numerical analysis for heat transfer in a duct with geometry circular annular elliptical using the Galerkin-based integral method. The analysis is performed for different geometries of the duct (circular annular circular and circular annular elliptical), and the method is validated for circular cylindrical geometry. Parameters such as mean temperature and mean and location Nusselt numbers for two boundary conditions: constant wall temperature and axial constant heat flux in the wall with constant wall temperature are presented and analyzed.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo aplicar a fluidodinâmica computacional no processo de separacao agua/oleo atraves de um dispositivo do tipo duplo tubo de 22,1cm de comprimento, sendo o tubo externo o meio poroso (membrana cerâmica) de espessura de 3,5cm, que funciona como barreira a passagem das goticulas de oleo e o tubo interno impermeavel. As simulacoes foram realizadas utilizando o pacote comercial Ansys CFX 12.0 adotando-se o modelo de particulas para descrever o escoamento da fase continua (agua) e da fase dispersa (oleo), utilizando uma malha numerica estruturada formada por 87403 elementos hexaedricos. O modelo matematico definido para descrever o processo de separacao agua/oleo com auxilio de um meio poroso e baseado na generalizacao das equacoes (Navier-Stokes) de conservacao de massa e quantidade de movimento adotando a abordagem Euleriana-Euleriana, auxiliado ao modelo de turbulencia RNG k-e padrao. Atraves dos campos de fracao volumetrica, campos de pressao e velocidade superficial da agua sobre os planos longitudinal e transversal pode-se concluir que a modelagem matematica proposta foi capaz de predizer os fenomenos fisicos envolvidos do processo em estudo.

This paper aims to study the hybrid process of osmotic dehydration and convective air drying of foods. Emphasis has been put on cassava cubes (Manihot esculenta Crantz.). Convective drying kinetics of fresh and osmotically dehydrated cassava cubes was evaluated at the following hot air-drying conditions: temperature 50°C, velocity 1.35 m/s, and absolute humidity 0.060 dry water/g. Experimental results of the moisture loss, solids gain, and incorporation of sodium chloride are shown and analyzed. For estimation of the effective mass diffusion coefficient, experiment data of average moisture content of cassava cubes (fresh and osmotically dehydrated) was fitted to the simplified Fick model and a good agreement was obtained. The effective mass diffusivity of the osmotically dehydrated cassava cube was 2.75 x10-10 m2/s and to fresh cassava cubes 5.45x10-10 m2/s.

Environmental concern has encouraged development related to polluted water treatment. Produced water originated from oil exploration has been submitted to different separation processes such as settling tanks, floaters, two-phase and three-phase separators, hydrocyclones, and membranes. On the use of membranes, the goal is to separate soluble components from solutions based on the size, charge, shape, and molecular interactions between the solute and membrane surface. In the present work, a numerical study was developed on the oil-water mixture separation process using a porous ceramic membrane module. The mathematical model used in this research is composed of mass and momentum conservation equations coupled to Darcy ́s law and SST k-ω turbulence model. Simulations were carried out employing the Ansys CFX commercial software. Results of the pressure, velocity, oil concentration distribution inside the device and membrane are presented and discussed. The results showed that the geometric aspects of the proposed microfiltration module and the membrane distribution within the separation module had a significant influence on the hydrodynamic flow leading to polarized layer dispersion.

The separation process of oily water using membranes has attracted the attention of researchers and engineers. The greater problem in the use of membrane separation process is the reduction in permeate flux due to clogged pores by oil deposition inside the membrane or by the effect of the concentration polarization. For this purpose, a theoretical study of a water/oil separation module was performed. This device consists of a tubular ceramic membrane provided with a rectangular inlet section. Numerical simulations were performed using Ansys CFX software to solve the mass and momentum conservation equations in the fluid and porous domains. Here was adopted the RNG k-e turbulence model. The effect of the membrane porosity and the inlet velocity of the fluid mixture on the two-phase flow behavior inside the separation module were evaluated. Results of the volumetric fraction, velocity and pressure fields of the oil and water phases are presented and analyzed. The results indicate a higher oil concentration within the membrane for the cases of higher porosity, and that the inlet fluid mixture velocity does not substantially affect the velocity profile within the separation module. It is found that the maximum separation efficiency of the module was obtained with feed velocity of 40 m/s and membrane porosity of 0.44.

This work aims to numerically simulating the resin injection manufacturing process of a polymer composite,reinforced with ribbons of NiTishape memory alloy, using the software Ansys CFX®. The multiphase flow mathematical modeling was used to describe the transient and isothermal resin-air flow during the process. Results of the pressure fields, velocity andvolume fractionsof the involved phases are presented. The fluid flow inside the mold was compared withthe flow between parallel flat plates and showed to be consistent. Process parameters, such as resin volumetric flow rate, resin inlet and air outlet positions have a large influence in the mold filling time, volume and position of voids fractions inside de mold and final product quality.

The objective of this work is to describe the fluid flow in porous media including the sorption term of the fluid by the fibers. The study has been applied to the manufacture of fiber-reinforced polymer composites by resin transfer molding, giving emphasis to radial resin infiltration in a one-dimensional approach. The mass conservation equation and Darcy’s law are presented and the solution of the governing equation is obtained. The advanced mathematical modeling includes the effect of fluid sorption by the porous media. Predicted flow front results and resin pressure fields within the mold during the injection process are presented, and the effects of the sorption term, injection pressure and fibrous medium permeability analyzed.

The study of heat transfer in fixed bed tubular reactors of heated or cooled walls has presented great interest by the academy and industry. The adequate and safe design of such equipment requires the use of reliable and realistic mathematical. Unfortunately several studies are restrict to homogeneous model applied to circular and elliptic cylindrical reactors. Then, the objective of this work was to predict heat transfer in packed-bed elliptic cylindrical reactor, by using a proposed heterogeneous model. The mathematical model is composed for one solid phase and another fluid phase, in which the balance equation for each constituent is applied separately. The finite volume method was utilized to solve the partial differential equations using the WUDS scheme for interpolation of the convective and diffusive terms, and the fully implicit formulation. Results of the temperature distribution of the fluid and solid phases along the reactor are presented and analyzed. It was verified that the highest temperature gradients of the phases are located close to the wall and inlet of the reactor.

This paper aims to study convective drying of industrial hollow bricks in a tunnel dryer. A transient mathematical model based on the heat and mass conservation equations applied to the air and brick was derived and the numerical solution (finite-volume method) of the governing equations is presented. Predicted and experimental data of the average moisture content and the temperature of the product during the drying process are compared and a good concordance was verified. Numerical results inside the bed confirm an almost null difference between the moisture content along the process. Similar behavior was verified to the product temperature. These results confirm an efficient drying process.

Drying is a complex process of coupledheat and mass transfer of wet porous material. Wet clay products when exposed to drying without control can suffer cracks and deformations, reducing its quality post-drying. Thus, this work aims to study the hollow ceramic materials drying with arbitrary shape using lumped models. Here, the exact solution of the governing equations were obtained using the method of separation of variables. Results of the average moisture constant and temperature of the material along the process are presented and analyzed. It was observed that the moisture loss process occurs at a lower speed than the heating of the ceramic material because its thermal diffusivity is greater than the mass diffusivity and that the area/volume relationship strongly affects the heat and mass transfer of the material.

This work presents a theoretical drying study of sisal fiber. Fibers with moisture content of around 11.2% were dried in an oven in the temperature 90°C. A transient and three-dimensional mathematical modeling to predict heat and mass transfer in a bed of fiber was proposed and numerically solved by using the finite-volume method. Results of the average moisture content and surface temperature were compared with experimental data to verify the consistence of the proposed model, and good agreement was verified.

Cashew is a fruit with high nutritional value and great economic importance in the Northeast region of Brazil, however, due to high moisture content, it is highly perishable. Freezing is one the most efficient methods for conservationof biological products, especially, fruits and vegetables. Then, the optimizationof the freezing process by numerical simulation is crucial. In this sense, the objective of this work was to investigate the influence of the moisture content on the cooling and freezing processes of cashew appleby using thecomputational fluid dynamics technique. Results of the cooling and freezing kinetics of the cashew apple and temperature distribution inside the fruitduring these processes are presented and analyzed. It was verified that the variation inthe initial moisture content had small effect in the total time of the process, however the samples with higher moisture content presented higher heat transfer rate during the cooling period and lesser during the freezing period.

This work presents a non-steady state and three-dimensional mathematical modeling to predict moisture transport (based on the Langmuir-Type Model) inside the vegetable fiber-reinforced composite materials. The numerical solutions of the governing equations have been obtain using the finite-volume method. The model was apply for vegetable fiber-reinforced polymer composites. Emphasis to the geometrical dimension effect of the composite in the water absorption process was given. Results of the average moisture content, free and entrapped water molecules concentration kinetics and free and entrapped water molecules concentration distributions inside the material along the process are shown and analyzed. In the distributions of the analyzed properties, it was observed that the geometric dimensions of the composite has influence in the water absorption process.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV’s) are considered as advanced classes of vehicles, capable of performing pre-established missions without physical communication with the ground or human assistance. The research and development of this type of vehicles have been motivated, due to its excellent characteristics, ideal to the military, scientific and industrial sectors. Thus, the objective of this paper is to study fluid flow behavior past over AUV’s, without and with control surfaces (rudders), by Computational Fluid-Dynamics (CFD), aiming to obtain information about the impact of the operating depth and control surfaces on the vehicle's hydrodynamics, in order to help researchers and designers of this class of vehicles. Results of the drag coefficient, pressure, velocity and streamlines distribution around the vehicles are presented and analyzed.

Leakages in oil pipelines can cause financial losses and several environmental damages, where large-scale offshore oil and gas exploration results in large releases of oil and gas into ocean waters. In the event of oil leakage, an immediate and adequate response is required to reduce environmental damage, such as containment barriers, for example, which depends on the agglomeration of oil particles, velocity and tendency to propagation. Thus, the understanding of the fluid flow behavior around of subsea pipeline at different depths is crucial. On the other hand, the knowledge of interfacial phenomena of immiscible liquids allows the process of adjective migration in submarine pipelines. Consequently, this science enables the prediction of the behavior and the geometric shape of the water-oil interface and provides a phenomenological foundation concerning the theories of perturbation, the stability criteria and mathematical modeling, as well as the flow patterns in the neighborhoods and submerged pipelines. From this perspective, this work aims to study the oil dispersion in sea water caused by leakage in a submerged pipeline. Here, a two-dimensional mathematical model based on the mass and linear momentum conservation equations and the standard k-e turbulence model, was developed. The dynamic behavior of the oil and water phases is evaluated by pressure fields, surface velocity, volumetric fraction and velocity vectors. Simulation results show the presence of oil flux from the pipe to the marine stream and vice-versa. Further, the increase in oil velocity at the pipe inlet leads to an increase in pressure drop.

The objective of this work was to intermittently and continuously dry “Neve” melon seeds and study their behavior. The seeds were dried in a fixed-bed dryer at a temperature of 60 °C under the influence of air velocity of 1 m s−1, followed by the prediction of drying kinetics, including that of intermittent processes with its effective time (pseudo-continuous drying) and tempering time (intermittent drying). The dried seeds were crushed to produce flour. The flours were evaluated for physicochemical parameters. To describe drying kinetics (continuous and intermittent drying) of “Neve” melon seeds, empirical models were used, including a new model proposed in this article to describe intermittent drying when the period of intermittence is included in the process. An optimization software was developed (LS Optimizer) and used to determine parameters (and their uncertainties) of the intermittent drying. The parameters of empirical models, used to describe continuous and pseudo-continuous drying, were determined by LAB Fit Curve Fitting Software. The Page model was the one that best fitted in the prediction of the experimental data of continuous and pseudo-continuous drying kinetics of seeds. A new model proposed in this work, based on Page and Lewis equations, was able to predict the kinetics of intermittent drying processes including the tempering time. The flours showed moisture content below 6%, and intermittent drying preserved proteins and lipids more than continuous drying, especially with drying and tempering periods of 10 and 20 min, respectively.

The mechanical loading frequency affects the functional properties of shape memory alloys (SMA). Thus, it is crucial to study its effect for the successful use of these materials in dynamic applications. Based on the superelastic cyclic behavior, this work presents an experimental methodology for the determination of the critical frequency of the self-heating of a NiTi Belleville conical spring. For this, cyclic compressive tests were carried out using a universal testing machine with loading frequencies ranging from 0.5 Hz to 10 Hz. The temperature variation during the cyclic tests was monitored using a micro thermocouple glued to the NiTi Belleville spring. Numerical simulations of the spring under quasi-static loadings were performed to assist the analysis. From the experimental methodology applied to the Belleville spring, a self-heating frequency of 1.7 Hz was identified. The self-heating is caused by the latent heat accumulation generated by successive cycles of stress-induced phase transformation in the material. At 2.0 Hz, an increase of 1.2 °C in the average temperature of the SMA device was verified between 1st and 128th superelastic cycles. At 10 Hz, the average temperature increase reached 7.9 °C and caused a 10% increase in the stiffness and 25% decrease in the viscous damping factor. Finally, predicted results of the force as a function of the loading frequency were obtained.

This work aims to study the drying of clay ceramic materials with arbitrary shapes theoretically. Advanced phenomenological mathematical models based on lumped analysis and their exact solutions are presented to predict the heat and mass transfers in the porous material and estimate the transport coefficients. Application has been made in hollow ceramic bricks. Different simulations were carried out to evaluate the effect of drying air conditions (relative humidity and speed) under conditions of forced and natural convection. The transient results of the moisture content and temperature of the brick, and the convective heat and mass transfer coefficients are presented, discussed and compared with experimental data, obtaining a good agreement. It was found that the lower the relative humidity is and the higher the speed of the drying air is, the higher the convective heat and mass transfer coefficients are at the surface of the brick and in the holes, and the faster the moisture removal material and heating is. Based on the predicted results, the best conditions for brick drying were given. The idea is to increase the quality of the brick after the process, to reduce the waste of raw material and energy consumption in the process.

Commonly based on the liquid diffusion theory, drying theoretical studies in porous materials has been directed to plate, cylinder, and sphere, and few works are applied to non-conventional geometries. In this sense, this work aims to study, theoretically, the drying of solids with oblate spheroidal geometry based on the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. Mathematical modeling is proposed to describe, simultaneously, the heat and mass transfer (liquid and vapor) during the drying process, considering the variability of the transport coefficients and the convective boundary conditions on the solid surface, with particular reference to convective drying of lentil grains at low temperature and moderate air relative humidity. All the governing equations were written in the oblate spheroidal coordinates system and solved numerically using the finite-volume technique and the iterative Gauss–Seidel method. Numerical results of moisture content, temperature, liquid, vapor, and heat fluxes during the drying process were obtained, analyzed, and compared with experimental data, with a suitable agreement. It was observed that the areas near the focal point of the lentil grain dry and heat up faster, consequently, these areas are more susceptible to the appearance of cracks that can compromise the quality of the product. In addition, it was found that the vapor flux was predominant during the drying process when compared to the liquid flux.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most produced and consumed cereals in the world, being characterized as the main food of more than half of the world population, since it is source of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. Freshly harvested rice from the field generally has a high moisture content to be stored safely and, therefore, a suitable drying process needs to be conducted to decrease the physical-chemical activity of the product and inhibit the associated microbial activities. In this work, experiments were carried out on the intermittent drying of rice grains, in order to evaluate the effects of different drying air temperatures (40, 50, 60 and 70 °C) and tempering times (30, 60, 120, 180 and 240 min). Intermittent drying was simulated by means of a new liquid diffusion model based on a prolate spheroid geometry. To validate the model, the solution was fitted to the experimental data for the drying air temperatures of 40 and 70 °C and tempering periods ranging from 0 to 180 min. The results show that, for all experiments of intermittent drying of rough rice, the effective operating time decreased compared to the continuous drying. In addition, intermittent drying produces lower temperature on the grain surface, which minimizes the thermal damages caused to the product during the process. Numerical simulations provide information on moisture distribution inside the rice grain during the periods of interruption in hot air application. After 15 min of drying at temperatures of 40 and 70 °C, followed by a 60-min pause at room temperature, it is possible to respectively reduce about 72 and 68% of the moisture content gradients inside the rice grain. With tempering of 180 min, it is possible to eliminate almost all moisture content gradients for the drying at 70 °C.

The residue generated from the processing of Tacinga inamoena (cumbeba) fruit pulp represents a large amount of material that is discarded without proper application. Despite that, it is a raw material that is source of ascorbic acid, carotenoids and phenolic compounds, which are valued in nutraceutical diets for allegedly combating free radicals generated in metabolism. This research paper presents a study focused on the mathematical modeling of drying kinetics and the effect of the process on the level of bioactive of cumbeba residue. The experiments of cumbeba residue drying (untreated or whole residue (WR), crushed residue (CR) and residue in the form of foam (FR)) were carried out in a fixed-bed dryer at four air temperatures (50, 60, 70 and 80 °C). Effective water diffusivity (Deff) was determined by the inverse method and its dependence on temperature was described by an Arrhenius-type equation. It was observed that, regardless of the type of pretreatment, the increase in air temperature resulted in higher rate of water removal. The Midilli model showed better simulation of cumbeba residue drying kinetics than the other models tested within the experimental temperature range studied. Effective water diffusivity (Deff) ranged from 6.4890 to 11.1900 × 10−6 m2/s, 2.9285 to 12.754 × 10−9 m2/s and 1.5393 × 10−8 to 12.4270 × 10−6 m2/s with activation energy of 22.3078, 46.7115 and 58.0736 kJ/mol within the temperature range of 50–80 °C obtained for the whole cumbeba, crushed cumbeba and cumbeba residue in the form of foam, respectively. In relation to bioactive compounds, it was observed that for a fixed temperature the whole residue had higher retention of bioactive compounds, especially phenolic compounds, whereas the crushed residue and the residue in the form of foam had intermediate and lower levels, respectively. This study provides evidence that cumbeba residue in its whole form can be used for the recovery of natural antioxidant bioactive compounds, mainly phenolic compounds, with the possibility of application in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Early deterioration of reinforced concrete foundations has been often reported in recent years. This process is usually characterized by an extensive mapping cracking process on concrete surfaces that results from several types of Internal Swelling Reaction (ISR). In this paper, a real case study of a tall reinforced concrete building with a severe deterioration process installed in its deep foundations is discussed. Laboratory tests were performed in concrete drilled cores extracted from a deep pile cap block 19 years after the beginning of construction. Tests to assess the compressive strength, the static and the dynamic modulus of elasticity, the gas permeability, and electron microscopy scanning to find out the primary mechanism responsible for the deterioration observed during in situ inspections. Chemical alterations of materials were observed in concrete cores, mainly due to Delayed Ettringite Formation (DEF), which significantly affected the integrity and durability of the structure. Dynamic modulus of elasticity showed to be a better indicator of damage induced by ISR in concrete than compressive strength. Procedures to strengthen the deteriorated elements using prestressing proved to be an efficient strategy to recover the structural integrity of pile caps deteriorated due to expansions due to ISR.

Wastewater from the oil industry can be considered a dangerous contaminant for the environment and needs to be treated before disposal or re-use. Currently, membrane separation is one of the most used technologies for the treatment of produced water. Therefore, the present work aims to study the process of separating oily water in a module equipped with a ceramic membrane, based on the Eulerian–Eulerian approach and the Shear-Stress Transport (SST k-ω) turbulence model, using the Ansys Fluent® 15.0. The hydrodynamic behavior of the water/oil mixture in the filtration module was evaluated under different conditions of the mass flow rate of the fluid mixture and oil concentration at the entrance, the diameter of the oil particles, and membrane permeability and porosity. It was found that an increase in the feed mass flow rate from 0.5 to 1.5 kg/s significantly influenced transmembrane pressure, that varied from 33.00 to 221.32 kPa. Besides, it was observed that the particle diameter and porosity of the membranes did not influence the performance of the filtration module, it was also verified that increasing the permeability of the membranes, from 3 × 10−15 to 3 × 10−13 m2, caused transmembrane pressure reduction of 22.77%. The greater the average oil concentration at the permeate (from 0.021 to 0.037 kg/m3) and concentrate (from 1.00 to 1.154 kg/m3) outlets, the higher the average flow rate of oil at the permeate outlets. These results showed that the filter separator has good potential for water/oil separation.

This work aims to study the influence of using construction and demolition waste in the replacement of coarse and fine aggregate to produce recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). A moderate compressive strength concrete made with usual fine and coarse aggregate was used as a benchmark material. Compressive and split tensile tests were performed using 120 cylindrical concrete specimens with 150 mm diameter and 300 mm length. Four-point flexural tests in reinforced beams made with conventional concrete and RAC were performed. The results obtained showed that the use of recycled fine aggregates, in both percentages of substitution investigated—50% and 100%—did not generate any deleterious influence on the values of compressive strength and split tensile strength of the RACs produced. Tin fact, the mechanical strengths of RACs produced with recycled fine aggregate were equal or higher than those from the reference concrete. The same behavior was not observed, however, when the recycled coarse aggregate was used. For this case, decreases in concrete mechanical strengths were observed, especially in compressive strength, with values around 35% lower when compared to the reference concrete. Tensile mechanical tests results confirmed the excellent behavior of all RACs made with replacement of usual fine aggregates by recycled. Bending tests performed in reinforced RAC beams had as objective to evaluate the deformation profile of the beams. The obtained results showed that RAC beams with full replacement of usual fine aggregate by the recycled aggregates have presented little changes in the global behavior, an aspect that encourages its use.

The work presents the results of an experimental campaign carried out on concrete elements in order to investigate the potential of using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to estimate the compressive strength based on relevant parameters, such as the water–cement ratio, aggregate–cement ratio, age of testing, and percentage cement/metakaolin ratios (5% and 10%). We prepared 162 cylindrical concrete specimens with dimensions of 10 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height and 27 prismatic specimens with cross sections measuring 25 and 50 cm in length, with 9 different concrete mixture proportions. A longitudinal transducer with a frequency of 54 kHz was used to measure the ultrasonic velocities. An ANN model was developed, different ANN configurations were tested and compared to identify the best ANN model. Using this model, it was possible to assess the contribution of each input variable to the compressive strength of the tested concretes. The results indicate an excellent performance of the ANN model developed to predict compressive strength from the input parameters studied, with an average error less than 5%. Together, the water–cement ratio and the percentage of metakaolin were shown to be the most influential factors for the compressive strength value predicted by the developed ANN model.

It is well known that intake of probiotic brings health benefits. Lactic bacteria with probiotic potential have aroused the interest of the industry in developing food products that incorporate such benefits. However, incorporating probiotic bacteria into food is a challenge for the industry, given the sensitivity of probiotic cultures to process conditions. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate gelatin- and inulin-based filmogenic solutions as a potential vehicle for incorporating probiotics into food products and to model the fermentation kinetics. L. salivarius (Lactobacillus salivarius) growth in filmogenic solutions was analyzed under the influence of a variety gelatin concentrations (1.0&ndash, 3.0%) and inulin concentrations (4.0&ndash, 6.0%) and fermented under the effect of different temperatures (25&ndash, 45 &deg, C). A full 23 factorial plan with three replicates at the central point was used to optimize the process. The impacts of process conditions on cell development are fundamental to optimize the process and make it applicable by the industry. The present study showed that the optimal conditions for the development of probiotic cells in filmogenic solutions are a combination of 1.0% gelatin with 4.0% inulin and fermentation temperature of 45 &deg, C. It was observed that the maximum cell growth occurred in an estimated time of about 4 h of fermentation. L. salivarius cell production and substrate consumption during the fermentation of the filmogenic solution were well simulated by a model proposed in this article, with coefficients of determination of 0.981 (cell growth) and 0.991 (substrate consumption).

Este trabalho objetiva estudar a secagem de sólidos porosos e com forma arbitraria usando o método da análise concentrada. Um modelo matemático fenomenológico avançado baseado numa análise concentrada e sua solução exata são apresentados para predizer as transferências de massa e calor em tijolos cerâmicos vazados industriais e estimar os coeficientes de transporte. Diferentes simulações foram realizadas para avaliar o efeito da temperatura do ar no processo de secagem. Resultados transientes do teor de umidade e temperatura do tijolo, e dos coeficientes de transferência de calor e massa convectivos são apresentados e discutidos. Verificou-se que, quanto maior a temperatura, maiores são os coeficientes de transferência de calor e massa convectivos na superfície do tijolo, e mais rápido o produto perde umidade e eleva sua temperatura. Do estudo, propõe-se uma condição otimizada de secagem do tijolo cerâmico industrial visando minimizar os defeitos no produto pós-secagem, aumentar sua qualidade para a etapa de queima, reduzir desperdícios de matéria-prima e economizar energia no processo.

The development of thermal energy storage systems is a possible solution in the search for reductions in the difference between the global energy supply and demand. In this context, the ability of some materials, the so-called phase change materials (PCMs), to absorb and release large amounts of energy under specific periods and operating conditions has been verified. The applications of these materials are limited due to their low thermal conductivity, and thus, it is necessary to associate them with high-conductivity materials, such as metals, to make the control of energy absorption and release times possible. Bearing this in mind, this paper presents a numerical analysis of the melting process of a PCM into a triplex tube heat exchanger (TTHX) with finned copper tubes, which allowed for the heat transfer between a heating fluid (water) and the phase change material to power a liquid-desiccant air conditioning system. Through the analysis of the temperature fields, liquid fractions, and velocities, as well as the phase transition, it was possible to describe the material charging process; then, the results were compared with experimental data, which are available in the specialized literature, and presented mean errors of less than 10%. The total required time to completely melt the PCM was about 105.5 min with the water being injected into the TTHX at a flow rate of 8.3 L/min and a temperature of 90 °C. It was observed that the latent energy that accumulated during the melting process was 1330 kJ, while the accumulated sensitive energy was 835 kJ. The average heat flux at the internal surface of the inner tube was about 3 times higher than the average heat flux at the outer surface of the TTHX intermediate tube due to the velocity gradients that developed in the internal part of the heat exchanger, and was about 10 times more intense than those observed in the external region of the equipment.

Fluid flow in pipes plays an important role in different areas of academia and industry. Due to the importance of this kind of flow, several studies have involved circular cylindrical pipes. This paper aims to study fully developed internal laminar flow through a corrugated cylindrical duct, using the Galerkin-based integral method. As an application, we present a study using heavy oil with a relative density of 0.9648 (14.6 °API) and temperature-dependent viscosities ranging from 1715 to 13000 cP. Results for different fluid dynamics parameters, such as the Fanning friction factor, Reynolds number, shear stress, and pressure gradient, are presented and analyzed based on the corrugation number established for each section and aspect ratio of the pipe.
