This work discusses the different theories that have attempted to explain the relation between the lexical information provided by a predicate and the syntactic structures that introduce arguments. The focus of the article is in the different sets of assumptions and predictions made by endo-skeletal theories, where lexical items somehow condition the syntactic projection of arguments, and exo-skeletal theories, where lexical items must adapt their meaning to whichever argument structure syntax has defined. In doing so, the article reviews the Theta Criterion, the thematic hierarchy, the notion of linking, the syntactic and semantic decomposition of lexical verbs and the different types of theta role definitions from a formal semantic perspective.

In this article, I argue that Spanish has three distinct classes of prefixes according to their grammatical category: relational, adjectival and quantifier prefixes. The first are truncated prepositional structures that act as modifiers of any lexical category; the second are truncated adjectival structures that can only modify nouns, and the third are quantifiers that bind a variable, require combination with two predicates at a low syntactic level and only pick nominal categories. I show that each class displays a different set of empirical properties with respect to recursivity and category change, among other aspects of their behaviour, and provide a syntactic and semantic analysis of the structures that they produce.

This article presents a descriptive and analytical overview of potential ellipsis cases in Spanish. After highlighting the main complications that the notion of ellipsis brings up, this work presents a detailed summary of the main empirical properties of ellipsis in nominal, verbal and clausal contexts. Then, the main theories about ellipsis and the analytical alternatives to standard deletion at PF are presented. The article concludes with a discussion of what type of properties ellipsis may have in Spanish.

Reseña del libro The Middle Voice and Connected Constructions in Ibero-Romance. A variationist and dialectal account

Este artículo presenta una propuesta sobre cómo integrar sintácticamente el género en español. La propuesta es que la mezcla de propiedades derivativas y flexivas que exhibe el género español se debe a que los exponentes relevantes (-o y -a) materializan una secuencia de núcleos que se dividen en dos áreas diferenciadas, una referida a la clasificación de entidades (clasificadores nominales) y otra referida a la definición de rasgos phi (el género en sentido estricto). Una vez divididas estas dos áreas, es posible dar cuenta de las nueve clases de sustantivos que el español diferencia por su correlación entre género y exponente de una forma directa que no implica disolver la distinción entre los procesos de formación de palabras y los procesos que introducen las marcas gramaticales de una categoría.

The different distinctions related to lexical aspect –state, activity, accomplishments and achievements– play an important role in the grammar of Spanish, but many of the details about how these distinctions can be implemented are unclear: which features distinguish between the classes, how the classes relate to each other, what is the nature of telicity or dynamicity and how one can account for the alternations that a verb is subject to involving its aspect are some of the most important problems from this perspective. The goal of this article is to provide a sufficient empirical base to address these questions and present the current alternatives to answer them.

En los últimos años se ha visto emerger un nuevo marcador de género en español al que se identifica como género inclusivo, lo cual da lugar a sustantivos con tres formas de género –niño, niña, niñe–. El objetivo de este trabajo es alejar esta cuestión de consideraciones políticas o sociales y examinar los rasgos gramaticales internos que tiene esta nueva forma, como una vía para encuadrar cualquier debate social sobre el fenómeno, que consideramos que debe ser posterior a un análisis de sus condiciones lingüísticas internas. Los resultados muestran que, frente a algunas críticas que se han hecho, el género inclusivo no implica una ruptura con las reglas del español y debe ser considerado un fenómeno de variación que posee reglas estrictas que se interiorizan en la gramática de los hablantes.

This article argues in favour of a view of the Spanish Theme Vowel (ThV) as the direct spell out of an identifiable syntactic head, specifically Ramchand's (2018) Event head, responsible for tagging lexical verbs with world and time parameters. I will argue that several apparent cases of verbal irregularity related to the conjugation of 1sg forms can be related to each other, and can receive a principled explanation once one adopts this view of Spanish ThVs. An approach where ThVs are post-syntactic morphemes that idiosyncratically tag the functional structure of verbs, or where they are syntactically inert morphemes, can only treat these facts as accidental and cannot provide an account of their mutual interconnection.

El objetivo de este trabajo es explorar por qué el español y otras lenguas admiten complementos de tiempo construidos como sintagmas nominales sin preposición. Propondremos que el motivo es que la estructura tempoaspectual de la cláusula se define en la espina dorsal del árbol sintáctico, lo cual hace innecesario emplear un elemento relacional para construir ese significado: el sintagma es un argumento de dichas proyecciones temporales. La distribución de los sintagmas nominales admitidos en estos contextos se sigue de las condiciones generales de legitimación de los argumentos.

This article provides an overview of Spanish SE, covering the main empirical facts, analyses and theoretical issues that it raises, and exploring the prospects to unify all uses –which are over a dozen in the literature– under one same object that keeps its surface properties invariable. We will show that it is almost inescapable to propose that SE is associated to two types of objects, defective arguments and defective verbal heads; both objects share the property of not introducing referentially independent DPs, which can be argued to be the result of the grammaticalisation of a reflexive element in contemporary Spanish. The chapter proposes that a treatment of SE as a projection introduced high in the clausal structure and acting as an agreement locus can be a fruitful way to unify all uses of SE.

En la bibliografía se ha señalado repetidamente la asociación del prefijo in-, habitualmente clasificado como ‘negativo’, y la categoría de los adjetivos. Son frecuentes los casos citados en la bibliografía en los que el prefijo facilita que una voz de categoría verbal deba ser interpretada como adjetivo (opinado ~ inopinado), así como algunos casos en que el prefijo convierte un sustantivo en adjetivo (color ~ incoloro). Sin embargo, estos casos se enfrentan al hecho de que el prefijo in- rara vez se combina con bases sustantivas o verbales, y mayoritariamente toma adjetivos calificativos como sus bases de formación. Si el prefijo negativo fuera un elemento con la capacidad de convertir una base en adjetivo, se esperaría que pudiera combinarse de forma más amplia con bases verbales o nominales, a las que impondría una lectura adjetival. Por tanto, debe encontrarse una forma en que el prefijo facilite pero no imponga una lectura adjetival. De la misma manera, el prefijo negativo in-, de tratarse como un cuantificador, debería inicialmente bloquear la presencia de los cuantificadores que operen sobre la misma variable, pero este prefijo —frente a no— nunca bloquea la cuantificación de grado. En este trabajo argumento que esta asociación entre el prefijo y la lectura adjetival se debe a que in- ha de entenderse como un prefijo cuya función es invertir la direccionalidad de una escala de valores, causando que el grado seleccione el intervalo complementario al que haría en una versión positiva; su asociación casi total con los adjetivos se sigue de que son los adjetivos precisamente los que proporcionan estas escalas necesarias para la semántica del prefijo. Precisamente por invertir la escala es por lo que este prefijo no bloquea la lectura de grado en combinación con otros cuantificadores. Este análisis se posiciona en contra de las propuestas en que in- cambia por sí solo la categoría de la base o es un cuantificador de grado que selecciona los valores inferiores de la escala: al contrario, in- define el conjunto complementario de valores que selecciona el cuantificador de grado.

What is the nature and function of mental representations in cognitive science, and in human language in particular? How do they come into existence and interact, and how is the information attributed to them stored in and retrieved from the human mind? Some theories treat constructions as primitive entities used for structure-building, central in both production and comprehension, while other theories only admit construction-like entities as devices to map the structure into semantics or to relate them to specific morphophonological exponents. In this positional piece, we seek to elucidate areas of commonality across what have traditionally been divergent approaches to the role of constructions in language. Here we outline a robust specification of the differences in how chunks of structure containing information are treated in the two main approaches, and we seek to offer a path toward a more unified theoretical stance.

The Romance Inter-Views are short, multiple Q&A pairs that address key issues, definitions and ideas regarding Romance linguistics. Prominent exponents of different approaches to the study of Romance linguistics are asked to answer some general questions from their viewpoint. The answers are then assembled so that readers can get a comparative picture of what’s going on in the field. For the first Inter-Views we selected (morpho-)syntactic research, and asked 8 syntacticians, representing four approaches to the study of Romance linguistics, to answer our questions. The approaches we selected are Cartography, Distributed Morphology, Minimalism, and Nanosyntax. The scholars we interviewed are listed hereafter. For Cartography: Luigi Rizzi, professor of Linguistics at the Collège de France; Norma Schifano, lecturer in Modern Languages at the University of Birmingham. The study of linguistic transfer-understood here in terms of the copying of previous linguistic representations-seeks to reveal how domain-relevant prior language knowledge impacts the acquisition and development of new mental representations more generally. Studying sequential multilingualism offers a natural laboratory to observe cognitive-economical mechanisms that avoid redundancy in language learning. One of the key dividing questions between theories of transfer in sequential multilingualism is the extent of transfer, that is, whether a whole previous grammar is transferred (full transfer) or a potentially different source language is selected for each linguistic property (property-by-property transfer). We adopted a novel methodological approach to this question, examining four different linguistic properties from unrelated domains of grammar across the three languages of a heterogeneous population of highly proficient, early Catalan/Spanish bilinguals with different degrees of language dominance and order of acquisition, at the very beginning of (adult) L3 English. Results are variably complex across the different properties, but compatible with a scenario where one of the previous languages, Catalan, was selected as the basis for the initial L3 English grammar of these speakers. We discuss the theoretical implications of these findings.

El objetivo principal de este trabajo es justificar la existencia de una clase gramaticalmente definida de nominalizaciones de actividad o práctica que tienen propiedades que las diferencian de las nominalizaciones de evento, cualidad o participante. Mostraremos que estos sustantivos, deverbales o no, definen distintas clases de actividades generales no instanciadas en periodos temporales específicos y presentan un comportamiento semántico, sintáctico y morfológico que justifican su inclusión en la taxonomía de nominalizaciones. Argumentaremos que estas estructuras parten de bases que, con independiencia de la categoría léxica de partida, carecen de la capacidad de expresar ejemplos concretos de una eventualidad, y por ello se emplean para definir oficios, aficiones y otras prácticas características de las personas o los objetos que se desligan de los parámetros temporales.

Abstract In this note, we argue that the -d marking that appears in Spanish Peninsular varieties in the context of plural imperatives does not express subject agreement. Our proposal is that its syntactic position is the one of participant clitic pronouns. The reason that triggers its manifestation in plural imperative forms is that the clausal structure of imperatives is impoverished. In order to express orientation of the command to a plural addressee, an interpretable [PLURAL] feature must be introduced in the extended functional structure of the verb, with the clitic area being the only region that is not impoverished in these clauses and thus able to host that feature.

This article provides an overview of the syntax and semantics of degree in Spanish, eventually suggesting that degree structure should be viewed as equivalent to aspect in the verbal domain. §1 introduces several of the themes that will be discussed in the article, while §2 introduces the semantics of degree. §3 discusses the basic syntactic properties of degree, particularly with adjectives. §4 introduces the notion of scale, which we will argue should correspond to Aktionsart in the verbal domain. §5 analyses positive degree, and explains how it differs from a scale both in syntax and in semantics. §6-§8 discuss comparative and superlative degrees, first their morphological facts (§6), then the specific properties of comparatives (§7) and finally those of superlatives (§8). The article ends with some conclusions in §9.

The present article reassesses some available data regarding word-internal language mixing (Spanish–German) involving verbs and nouns. The empirical generalization is that Spanish roots can be combined with German verbalizers, but not vice versa. Data of this type highlight the sophisticated knowledge of the underlying representations that code-switching bilinguals must have of both contributing grammars and, in turn, how these contribute to the formation of the grammar that underlies their rule-governed systems for amalgamating them. Despite agreeing with the general conclusions of González-Vilbazo and López’s 2011 study regarding what the data tell us about code-switching more generally, we refine their analysis to better capture the patterns. Our proposal is that these mixtures are the only instances where the structural and lexical properties of verbal exponents used in both languages overlap, parting ways with previous analyses based on the possible zero nature of Spanish verbalizers or the absence of conjugation classes in German.

Este trabajo explora tres aspectos de la gramática de los sufijos asociados a lecturas de golpe –más propiamente, contacto brusco– en español: -azo, -ada y -ón. Se propone que estos sufijos pueden formar sustantivos de contacto brusco porque, por distintos motivos en cada caso, están asociados en su entrada a un núcleo que denota un límite final (]) subespecificado acerca de la dimensión sobre la que opera; la presencia de este límite relaciona sus lecturas de resultado y aumentativas con la de contacto brusco. Asimismo, este núcleo explica la interpretación de acción que reciben en ausencia de propiedades verbales, así como las lecturas que produce con ciertos adjetivos. Por último, se propone que el hecho de que la base nominal a veces se interprete como un instrumento (cabezazo ‘golpe dado con la cabeza’) y a veces como un locativo (morrón ‘golpe dado en los morros’) puede derivarse de la distinta preposición que cada afijo codifica en su entrada léxica.

Este trabajo muestra que, pese a las apariencias, las estructuras de 'No vi a Juan sino a María' y 'Vi no a Juan sino a María' son diferentes. Mientras que es posible aceptar un análisis estándar en el caso de la primera, la segunda estructura presenta propiedades sorprendentes que no son compatibles con la idea de que el 'a Juan' funciona como argumento del predicado. Este trabajo propone que en el caso de la segunda estructura el elemento negado y la coda correctiva forman un único constituyente en el que 'sino' actúa como un núcleo relacional.

This article provides an overview of the main facts and analytical problems that relate to verbal periphrases. The article is structured as follows. In §1 I provide an overview of the main criteria for being a periphrasis, and the constructions that it should be differentiated from. §2 is devoted to the nature of the auxiliary verb, and its limits with other types of verbs. In §3 I talk about the auxiliated verb, and the linking element that sometimes appears in connection to it. §4 briefly discusses the main structure of a periphrasis, and is followed by a few sections about the syntactic behaviour of these linguistic objects. §5 discusses the behaviour of clitics within periphrases; §6 talks about the selectional restrictions; §7 talks about the behaviour of passives with these structures. §8 discusses the semantic classification of periphrases and some of the research problems that they trigger. §9 talks about sequences of periphrases, and their additional restrictions.

Esta nota discute casos donde aparentemente se ha extraído un relativo del interior de una estructura que, para otros fenómenos, actúa como una isla. Se argumenta que hay motivos empíricos para rechazar un análisis basado en el movimiento y se sugiere que un tratamiento con funciones de elección libre daría mejor cuenta de los datos.

The goal of this article is to analyse a case of variation in Spanish. In most varieties, constructions of the form Hace dos días que (“it has been two days since”) reject nominal expressions like todo el día (“all the day”), hence *Hace todo el día que (lit. “it has been all the day that”). However, a particular variety of Argentinean Spanish allows it. This article proposes that in the non-Argentinean varieties, hace (“make”) is the spell out of a temporal relator placed in the extended projection of the verb; the nominal expression that accompanies it is a measure phrase providing the length of the vector it projects. These varieties build hace dos días que-constructions through movement of the temporal relator to the CP area. However, the Argentinean variety builds hace dos días que-constructions without movement, as a temporal verb that takes a durative argument. This explains the different range of nominal expressions allowed in each variety.

This article provides an overview about the main facts and analytical options in the domain of determiners and quantifiers in Spanish. It covers the main classification of determiners and their basic syntactic and semantic properties (§1), the differences in behaviour between quantifiers and determiners in the strict sense (§2), the notion of definiteness and the contrasts in the use of the definite and indefinite articles (§3), the notion of specificity (§4) and the main types of quantifiers and how they can be identified (§5). In terms of analytical problems, it discusses whether determiners should be considered heads or not (§6), the areas within the determiner and quantifier domain (§7), the nature of the indefinite article as an element that shares properties with existential quantifiers (§8), the problems posed by proper names (§9) and the possible existence of phonologically null determiners in Spanish (§10). Conclusions are presented in §11.

Esta reseña discute la contribución del volumen con respecto a tres parámetros centrales dentro de la integración entre lingüística y práctica docente: la reflexión lingüística, la variación y la forma de presentar los contenidos de lingüística teórica.

Este trabajo estudia los llamados clíticos marginales que forman parte de ciertas construcciones idiomáticas de naturaleza verbal (jorobarla, tomarla, pirárselas, jugársela), concentrándose en dos aspectos de su gramática: su contribución de significado y la tendencia a aparecer como formas femeninas. Se propone que en ambos casos la respuesta se relaciona con la presencia de un sustantivo omitido de manera cuya contribución semántica es perceptible pese a la naturaleza idiomática de la construcción: el clítico pronominaliza rasgos de este sustantivo, bajo condiciones muy específicas que no son exclusivas de esta clase de construcciones.

Este trabajo discute el problema de que la inmensa mayoría de los adjetivos deverbales dan lugar a lecturas no episódicas, lo cual se traduce en desafíos para su análisis, toda vez que no tenemos una definición sólida de las propiedades positivas de los adjetivos. Se propone que en un sistema con dominios ontológicos donde el nivel verbal define esencias eventivas sin anclaje a mundos o tiempos (Ramchand & Svenonius, 2014; Ramchand, 2016) el problema se resuelve de forma directa sin necesidad de proponer nudos explícitamente adjetivales. Las ventajas de este sistema se ilustran con la clase de adjetivos relacionales deverbales.

This article aims to providing the reader with an overview of the main facts and analyses about the syntax and semantics of imperfecto and indefinido in Spanish. §1 presents the main views of the nature of tense in natural language; §2 introduces the main distinctions and classifications of tense in Spanish, from a descriptive perspective; §3 does the same with aspect. §4, the core of the article, reviews the facts and the analyses about the famous imperfecto ~ indefinido distinction in the Spanish temporoaspectual domain. §5 takes stock of the facts in Spanish, and outlines some conclusions.

Una de las pruebas que más influencia ha tenido recientemente en los estudios sobre adjetivos es la combinatoria con adverbios de grado para diagnosticar la estructura interna de las escalas. Este trabajo muestra que la combinatoria con estos adverbios no siempre refleja la estructura escalar del adjetivo, identifica otras tres lecturas y propone diagnósticos para diferenciarlas.

Este trabajo se plantea un problema al que da lugar el adverbio apenas: en ciertos casos se comporta como un término negativo, mientras que en otros es positivo. Tras discernir entre los dos sentidos, y mostrar cómo algunas oraciones pueden ser ambiguas entre ambos usos, proponemos que apenas es un término de polaridad que no especifica léxicamente su orientación, sino que la toma por concordancia abstracta del contexto sintáctico. La apariencia de término positivo y negativo a la vez se sigue del hecho de que hay contextos en los que su configuración o su interpretación le impiden tomar una polaridad negativa o positiva. Abstract: In this article we address a problem raised by the adverb apenas: under certain circumstances it behaves as a negative polarity item, while in other cases it acts as a positive polarity element. After dividing the two interpretations and showing how some sentences can be ambiguous between two uses, we propose that apenas is a polarity item that does not lexically specify its orientation, but obtains an orientation from the syntactic context. Its appearance as a positive and negative item follows from the fact that in some contexts its syntactic configuration or semantic interpretation disallow one of the two polarities.

This article provides an overview of the main facts and theories regarding nominal modifiers, with attention to the internal division of the low DP-structure (gender, number and N). The article presents first the notion of modification seen from the perspectives of semantics and syntax (§1); adjective classes are discussed in §2. §3 discusses the contrasts between prenominal and postnominal adjectives; §4 discusses the ordering of adjectives in sequences; §5 reviews the main theories that account for the facts discussed in §3 and §4. §6 moves to prepositional modifiers, presenting facts and theories about them. §7 presents the conclusions.

Este trabajo propone un análisis de las construcciones condicionales de doble subjuntivo que sigue una sugerencia que se presentó por primera vez –hasta donde sabemos– en la Gramática de la RAE de 1870. Este trabajo, en cierto sentido, desarrolla –en un modelo teórico moderno– esta propuesta. Argumentamos que las prótasis son estructuras relativas que se relacionan con la apódosis por medio de un operador sobre situaciones; cuando ese operador ha adquirido valor modal en la prótasis y no ha satisfecho el anclaje referencial dentro de la prótasis, entra en la apódosis como un elemento activo y fuerza la proyección del modo en la apódosis, con la consecuencia inmediata de que el verbo aparecerá en subjuntivo.

This work tries to give an answer to the question of why in Spanish the first member of a complex numeral obtained by addition cannot be coordinated, while the first member of one involving multiplication can: the sequence treinta o cuarenta y uno can only mean 30 or 41, while tres o cuatro mil may mean 3 or 4000, but may also mean 3000 or 4000. We argue that the restriction follows if derivations involving complex specifiers are disprefered when the meaning obtained would be the same that one obtains in a derivation not involving them.

This state of the art tries to cover as much as possible about the properties, conditions and analyses of Differential Object Marking (DOM) in Spanish. Starting with some considerations about the boundaries of the phenomenon, it considers its morphological, semantic and syntactic properties –with respect both to the internal properties of the direct object and to the wider context in which it appears–. It also reviews the other morphosyntactic phenomena that have been claimed to correlate with DOM, and finally goes through a number of analysis in different theoretical traditions to highlight the points of agreement and debate in the current literature.

Este trabajo trata de proponer una explicación estructural del hecho de que el paradigma de indefinido del verbo ser sea idéntico al del verbo ir. Se propone que internamente, ir se construye sobre el verbo ser, y que el elemento que los distingue semánticamente se desplaza a una posición alta, de tal manera que la copia baja que deja se ignora a efectos de la materialización morfofonológica. El análisis se concentra en las formas de indefinido y a partir de ellas se extiende al imperfecto de subjuntivo.

This article presents the main facts about how information structure is syntactically codified in Spanish, with particular attention to the syntax of topics and foci. These facts will be used to assess whether cartographic and minimalist approaches can, in their pure version, account precisely for this set of facts in a predictive way. We discuss the taxonomy of topics and foci, the evidence for their syntactic position, their A’-movement properties, the asymmetries between left- and right-dislocated elements, and the availability of information structure inside subordinate clauses.

La noción de afijo cero resulta sumamente polémica en los estudios morfológicos desde Nida (1948), por lo que numerosos autores han propuesto que no pueden emplearse como objetos del análisis morfológico (p. ej., Scalise 1983). Este trabajo proporciona un argumento del español a favor de admitirlos como elementos posibles de la estructura interna de las palabras: sin postular un sufijo cero para la tercera persona singular no es posible dar cuenta de la distribución de formas como sal (imperativo) frente a sal-e (presente de indicativo).

Abstract. This article provides with a state of the art of how the Individual Level / Stage Level distinction –and the related but distinct issue of the distribution of ser / estar– is instantiated in Spanish. We argue that the IL / SL distinction can be understood in two different ways: as a contrast between properties predicated of an individual or of a stage of that individual, and as a contrast between temporally persistent properties and temporary ones. The paper ends with a specific proposal about how to capture the distinction inside a structural system.

En este trabajo argumentamos a favor de un análisis morfológico de los nombres propios que deriva de la hipótesis general del isomorfismo entre forma y significado. Nuestra propuesta es que los nombres propios no se segmentan morfológicamente porque el hablante no tiene que descomponerlos en partes menores para construir composicionalmente su semántica. Los datos que empleamos provienen del género de los topónimos; argumentamos que el género en estas formaciones es variable porque el hablante no descompone una desinencia en estas formaciones y, en ausencia de otros principios que obliguen a reconocer el género, la marca de género se emplea para expresar nociones semánticas.

In this article we study a word formation process that involves the suffix -dera in some variaties of American Spanish, where it can give rise to event nouns with a meaning of intensity. After presenting its precise dialectal distribution and its semantic role, we contend that this process is related with the highly productive participial nominalizations in American Spanish, and, thus, that this case of morphological variation needs to be reduced to a more basic phenomenon.

Este artículo se ofrecen varios argumentos para considerar que los interfijos y los morfemas apreciativos son en realidad la misma clase de objetos, como sugiere Lázaro Mora (1999), lo cual permite tratarlos unificadamente como marcadores de la no prototipicidad de lo expresado en la base. Entre las consecuencias de esta propuesta se encuentra que no pueden asociarse los diminutivos específicamente al cotejo del género de la base.

The goal of this article is to provide an overview of the range of phenomena that in Spanish are related to modal interpretations, with particular attention to the distribution and analysis of subjunctive. The main questions that are discussed in this article are (a) whether subjunctive can be characterised uniformly; (b) what the proper placement of subjunctive is in the functional structure of the clause, and how subjunctive interacts with modals that are placed in different areas; (c) what kind of analysis is necessary to account in an appropriate way for the different aspects of the grammar of subjunctive.

Resumen Este trabajo discute las condiciones bajo las cuales es posible tener dos sintagmas genitivos marcados con de referidos al mismo sustantivo; se identifican dos casos: nombres eventivos (la manipulación de Juan de materiales radioactivos) y nombres de representación (el retrato de Marilyn de Warhol). Estos datos son empleados para evaluar críticamente tres aproximaciones posibles al rechazo general a las secuencias marcadas idénticamente en las lenguas naturales: una basada en ambigüedades comunicativas, otra de naturaleza morfofonológica y una propiamente sintáctica. Palabras clave: genitivos, sintagma nominal, nombres de representación, sintaxis Abstract This article identifies the conditions under which sequences of two genitives modifying the same noun are acceptable in Spanish; two cases areidentified: event nouns (la manipulación de Juan de materiales radioactivos, lit. the handling of Juan of radioactive materials, ‘the handling of radioactive materials by Juan’) and representation nouns (el retrato de Marilyn de Warhol, lit. the portait of Marilyn of Warhol). These data are used to critically evaluate three possible approaches to the general rejectionof sequences of identically marked objects in natural languages: one based on the avoidance of ambiguities, one of a morphophonological nature and one which is properly syntactic.
