We re-examined the knowledge on the relationships between fauna and forest management in Italy. We focused our attention on Vertebrates, including small mammals (Rodents and Soricomorphs), bats, birds, reptiles and amphibians, and on carabid and saproxylic beetles. We found that nearly all groups respond in accordance with Angelstam's scheme of the traditional forestry cycle, with open habitat specialists followed by generalists and forest specialists when pristine conditions have been attained, though with some differences for some taxa. In all groups, some forest "superspecialists" or old growth indicators could be found, in (sub)Mediterranean forests some carabid beetles could be defined as "dendrophilous," i.e. associated with the presence of old trees. Poplar plantations are poor substitutes for native forests, as well as exotic conifers. We propose a model for an ideal forest structure that may efficiently preserve the faunal components, at the microscale level this coincides with the structure of an unmanaged old growth forest stand, marked also by a deep and humus-rich soil layer. Some caveats at the landscape scale have dealt with in relation to the size of the designed area, in order to avoid fragmentation effects. A sustainable harvesting scheme has indicated in the "systemic silviculture" proposed by Ciancio and other scientists.

Aim: This research primarily focuses on exploring the suitability of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy with multivariate data analysis as a tool to classify commercial wines depending on the aging process. It is aimed at discriminating between wines aged in barrels and those obtained using alternative products (chips).Methods and Results: Around 75 commercial barrel-aged red wines issued from the appellation “Valpolicella” (Italy) were analyzed. Moreover, 15 wines were aged at the experimental winery of the Research Centre of Viticulture and Enology in Asti using different types of commercial oak chips. Wines were analyzed in transmittance using NIR regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) analyses were used to classify wines: a preliminary step was carried out using PCA that showed interesting groups in the whole data set. Next, in order to test if combined explanatory variables made it possible to discriminate treatments and how they are useful to predict which group a new observation will belong to, an orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) was carried out. Several wine groups were considered, defined by factors including the aging process, the type of oak used for aging (wood barriques, barrels or chips) and the wine typologies (differing for some enological parameters).Conclusions: Overall, OPLS-DA models correctly classified >90 % of the wines. These results demonstrate the potential of combining spectroscopy with chemometric data analysis as a rapid method to classify wines according to their aging process. Nevertheless, the development of a mathematical model for predictive purposes is a complex task: indeed, large databases for different wines should be constructed, and other spectral IR zones might be evaluated for improving the method performance in determining wine aging process.Significance and impact of the study: This study contributes to the development of an easy-to-use and easily applicable NIR method for correlating the infrared “fingerprint” spectrum with the aging process in wines, aimed at implementing a technique able to discriminate wines aged with different wood types, that can be progressively used in the laboratory for routine fraud inspection.

Social media can be an important, constantly updated, source of information concerning natural disasters. User-generated, free text messages contain useful elements for the three main phases of disaster management: awareness/early warning, response, post-disaster assessments. However, most of the previous research focus on studying contents collected in relation to specific events. More work can be done in extending Information Extraction tasks to continuous streams of documents (potentially) hazard-related, regardless of time or location. We describe a Natural Language Processing architecture, employed in our study, to collect and monitor keywordbased streams, associated to different languages and event types. Starting from existing work, we review the definitions of disaster-related Information Types and Informativeness to better capture relevant and interesting items in the newly defined streams. To act as both a guideline in this procedure and a gold standard in automatic classification we created and annotated a multi-language, multi-hazard corpus of more than 10,000 tweets, sampled from our collected data-streams. We conclude by discussing the methodology behind and the results achieved by rule-based classifiers that we developed using domain and linguistic knowledge. La enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) está aumentando marcadamente su morbimortalidad, costos e indicadores epidemiológicos. Por ello la Asociación Argentina de Medicina Respiratoria (AAMR) convocó a un grupo de especialistas para actualizar conocimientos básicos y efectuar recomendaciones para su diagnóstico, prevención y tratamiento. Se revisan definición, avances en fisiopatología, presentación clínica, diagnóstico por imágenes y evaluación funcional. Se enfatiza su diagnóstico temprano mediante exploración funcional -esencialmente espirometría- y la prevención a través de la cesación del tabaquismo. Se describen estrategias para dejar de fumar, tratamiento farmacológico y no farmacológico. La administración de broncodilatadores, preferentemente de acción prolongada, es la primera opción de tratamiento farmacológico. Los corticoides inhalados se indican en combinación con los broncodilatadores en pacientes con obstrucción al flujo aéreo persistente asociada con exacerbaciones frecuentes, si bien se requieren estudios que confirmen su relación costo/beneficio. La vacuna antigripal es recomendada en todos los pacientes. Con respecto a las intervenciones no farmacológicas, la cirugía del enfisema solo se recomienda en circunstancias especiales. La rehabilitación respiratoria es una herramienta útil en pacientes con limitación en la actividad física habitual. La oxígenoterapia crónica domiciliaria mejora la supervivencia en pacientes con hipoxemia crónica grave. La ventilación no invasiva domiciliaria fuera de las exacerbaciones, tiene indicaciones en pacientes seleccionados. Las exacerbaciones agudas deben tratarse con broncodilatadores, oxígeno, corticoides, antibióticos y, bajo ciertas circunstancias, asistencia respiratoria mecánica tanto no invasiva como invasiva. El papel de la educación pública, del paciente y su familia, es considerada esencial en la prevención y tratamiento.

El análisis celular del esputo, espontáneo u obtenido mediante la técnica de esputo inducido, se ha transformado en una herramienta ampliamente difundida para la evaluación y orientación del tratamiento de las enfermedades inflamatorias de la vía aérea, principalmente asma, enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica y bronquitis eosinofílica. Se han aportado evidencias sobre la utilidad de la técnica del esputo inducido, validada y estandarizada, para ser empleada en pacientes con dificultades para expectorar. Numerosas investigaciones dieron cuenta de la efectividad de basar las decisiones terapéuticas en el componente inflamatorio de la vía aérea mediante el recuento de células en el esputo. Varios estudios mostraron que, en pacientes con asma el análisis celular de esputo guía en la determinación de estrategias para disminuir las exacerbaciones y para mejorar la función pulmonar, aun en pacientes con asma grave, para disminuir el remodelamiento; también se ha descrito su utilidad en pacientes con EPOC, para la disminución de las exacerbaciones.

Since morbidity, mortality and socioeconomic costs from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are widely increasing, a group of respiratory medicine specialists was summoned by the AAMR to update basic knowledge on COPD and to issue recommendations for its prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The authors review the definition of COPD together with current knowledge on pathophysiology. Clinical presentation, functional evaluation and imaging are summarized. Early diagnosis through pulmonary function tests -mainly spirometry- and the role of smoking cessation are stressed. Smoking cessation strategies are described as well as pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment. Long acting bronchodilators are considered the first pharmacological option for treatment due to its effectiveness and patient compliance. Inhaled corticosteroids are indicated in combination with long-acting bronchodilators in patients who present persistent airway obstruction associated with frequent exacerbations since they reduce their number although further studies are needed to confirm their cost/benefit. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended in all patients. In the non-pharmacological section, surgery for emphysema is suggested in very specific cases. Respiratory rehabilitation is a useful tool for patients with daily activities limitation. Long-term oxygen therapy at home improves survival in patients with severe chronic hypoxemia. Non-invasive home ventilation in chronic patients has limited indications in specific subgroups. Acute exacerbations should be aggressively treated with bronchodilators, oxygen, antibiotics, corticosteroids and eventually mechanical ventilation, as invasive as not invasive respiratory support. The importance of public education as well as of individual patients and their families is deemed essential in the prevention and treatment of the disease.

Cellular analysis of sputum either spontaneous or by induced sputum technique, has become a widespread tool for the evaluation and guidance of treatment of inflammatory diseases of the airway, primarily asthma, COPD and eosinophilic bronchitis. Induced sputum method is a validated, standardized and non-invasive technique, useful in patients with difficulties to expectorate. Its implementation is simple and cost effective. Numerous investigations have shown the effectiveness of basing treatment decisions on the inflammatory component of the airway by counting cells in sputum. Several studies have demonstrated that in patients with asthma, results of this analysis can guide in defining strategies to reduce exacerbations and to improve lung function even in patients with severe asthma, as well as to decrease the remodeling; in addition, a reduction in exacerbations in COpD patients, monitored by this sputum examination, has also been described.

A new method based on ion chromatography (IC) was developed for the determination of phosphorus in fertilizers. Fertilizers were extracted with water, mineral acids, and 2% formic acid, 2% citric acid, and neutral ammonium citrate solutions according to European Regulation No. 2003/2003 of the European Parliament and the Council of October 13, 2003, or the Decree of the Italian Agriculture Minister of June 17, 2002; the extracts were analyzed by direct injection, after simple filtration, by IC on an IonPac AS19 (250 × 4 mm id) column, using a KOH (21-50-21 mM) gradient and suppressed conductivity detection. The calibration plot was linear over the range of 550 mg/L (r2 of >0.999). The method was evaluated by comparison with a gravimetric method according to established norms. Associated uncertainty at the 95% confidence level was established as 0.47% for the determination of 346% P2O5 by IC. A good chromatographic separation of phosphorus forms such as phosphates and phosphites, and some other important anions like nitrates, chlorides, and sulfates present in many commercial fertilizers was also possible, with a linear response over the range of 550 mg/L. After a more complete validation, this IC determination of phosphorus could replace more tedious methods such as those using gravimetric determinations.

Intra-male aggressive behaviour of Scarites buparius was analysed; agonistic interaction between males consisted of a repeated series of fighting events. We defined this behaviour as “agonistic” because a dominance/submission status was established. We measured the males and found that the attack behaviour persistence is correlated with the body length.

Sixty consecutive previously untreated patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (intermediate or high grade and/or bulky disease and/or presence of constitutional symptoms), were randomized to receive either CHOP-B or CEOP-B (31 and 29 patients, respectively) to compare the therapeutic activity and toxicity. Complete response was observed in 65% of the patients treated with CHOP-B and 62% with CEOP-B; relapse of the disease occurred, respectively, in 5/20 (25%) and 6/18 (33%) of CR. Relapse-free survival and overall survival at 5 yr resulted in both groups (RFS 68% and 62% and overall survival 62% and 62%, respectively). In addition, increasing the dosage of epirubicin did not result in an increase in the haematologic toxicity or percent of CR. The haematologic toxicity was slightly lower in CEOP-B. The cardiologic monitoring (Eco 2D and EKG-Holter) at 400 mg mq-1 of EDX and ADM did not demonstrate variations in cardiac function in the CEOP-B group, while in the ADM patients the ejection fraction was statistically lower as regards basal values. In conclusion, in our randomized study, substitution of ADM with EDX in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas in the CHOP-B regimen, did not decrease the therapeutic activity of the combined chemotherapy, while less toxicity (haematologic and cardiac) was observed. For these reasons, in our opinion, epirubicin can substitute adriamycin in second and third generation regimens for non-Hodgkin's lymphomas in which the major drawback for a wider diffusion is the severe toxicity observed.

A blind randomized cross-over comparative study of salbutamol and the combination fenoterol/ipratropium was carried out in 20 patients with mild to moderate bronchial asthma; clinical and functional serial parameters were evaluated. The combination was more effective than salbutamol in preventing crisis and incidence of cough and wheezing, and in the spirometric results. There were no significant differences in expectoration and the functional parameters improved not only in flow but also in volume. Pathogenesis is discussed.
