A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nurses regarding blood culture collection. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted in five Brazilian public hospitals with 112 nurses. Data were collected using an adapted questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: nurses who did not consider themselves capable of collecting blood cultures had a 72% lower chance of performing the collection at the recommended site and an 83% lower chance of using the same needle for blood inoculation into the vials. Nurses working in the emergency department had a 75% lower chance of knowing the international benchmark for blood culture contamination rates, and those with less than 5 years in the position decreased their chance of accuracy in this matter by 79%. Conclusions: there are gaps in the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nurses regarding blood culture collection. Standardization of the technique, periodic education, supervision and guidance of the collection team, and process auditing are recommended coping strategies.

Leishmania infantum is responsible for visceral leishmaniasis, the most severe form of the disease. The treatments currently used are pentavalent antimonials and amphotericin B, but they present serious side effects and resistant species that already exist. Therefore, it is necessary to find new compounds to avoid those acute problems. In vitro, this study evaluated the effects of fifteen digoxin derivative compounds on promastigotes and two of these compounds on amastigotes of L. infantum. We also assess the impact of these compounds on mitochondrial metabolism. The results showed that two of the fifteen compounds tested showed a high anti-Leishmania effect. Compounds 3 and 15 showed no toxicity across the cell lines RAW 264.7. Compound 15 inhibited macrophage infection and reduced the number of amastigotes. The two compounds showed a reduction in oxygen consumption by promastigotes. In this way, compounds 3 and 15 appear to be promising anti-leishmanial. Therefore, we checked both compounds in vivo also evaluating the toxicity by measuring ALT, AST, urea, and creatinine. Our results may contribute in the future to the development and application of new anti-Leishmania drugs.

A aprendizagem de línguas adicionais, na atualidade, mostra-se cada vez mais interligada aos meios tecnológicos. Sendo assim, a gamificação, ainda que não se restrinja às questões tecnológicas, dada à popularização dos dispositivos móveis, emerge no cenário educacional como uma possibilidade para motivar e engajar os estudantes de diferentes idiomas através de diversas plataformas. Com isso, esta pesquisa objetiva relatar, a partir de uma revisão de escopo, as contribuições e os possíveis desafios da gamificação para o ensino de línguas nas pesquisas internacionais, a partir de artigos publicados entre os anos de 2014 e 2021 indexados na base de dados Web of Science. Dos 65 artigos analisados, foram obtidos os seguintes resultados: vocabulário e gramática são os aspectos mais preponderantes nas propostas de gamificação analisadas, além da utilização de plataformas comerciais para tal fim; há uma forte relação entre a gamificação e a motivação pautada nas pesquisas produzidas e também, um grande número de trabalhos aponta a relação entre gamificação e aprendizagem nas pesquisas analisadas. Para concluir, reforça-se a necessidade de desenvolvimento de mais trabalhos neste campo, especialmente a criação de plataformas locais e a diversificação de pesquisas que foquem na aprendizagem de diversas línguas, já que a língua inglesa é a mais investigada.

The growing global population has led to increased food consumption and a significant amount of food waste, including the non-consumed parts of fruits (e.g., stems, rinds, peels, seeds). Despite their nutrient richness, these by-products are often discarded. With the rising interest in nutrient-dense foods for health benefits, fruit by-products have potential as nutritious ingredients. Upcycling, which repurposes waste materials, is one solution. White flour, which is common in food products like bread and pasta, has good functional properties but poor nutritional value. This can be enhanced by blending white flour with fruit by-product flours, creating functional, nutrient-rich mixtures. This review explores using flours from common Brazilian fruit by-products (e.g., jaboticaba, avocado, guava, mango, banana, jackfruit, orange, pineapple, and passion fruit) and their nutritional, physical–chemical properties, quality and safety, and applications. Partially replacing wheat flour with fruit flour improves its nutritional value, increasing the amount of fiber, protein, and carbohydrates present in it. However, higher substitution levels can alter color and flavor, impacting the sensory appeal and acceptability. While studies showed the potential of fruit by-product flours in food formulation, there is limited research on their long-term health impacts.

Introduction The cornea is an avascular and transparent layer of connective tissue crucial to retinal image quality. Diseases can impair its quality, affecting vision. Keratoplasty is the only therapy capable of restoring vision quality in severe corneal involvement. Despite the established practice of transplantation, access to corneal tissue is limited in many places, and the quality of retrieved corneas is not always adequate, resulting in disqualification. Not all factors affecting tissue quality are fully understood due to the multifactorial nature of processes and variations in procedures globally.Objective The objective is to map the global literature to establish the factors associated with the clinical and sociodemographic conditions of donors, and the conditions inherent in the processing of corneas that can influence the quality of this tissue for transplantation purposes.Methods and analysis A scoping review will be developed based on the methodological framework of the Joanna Briggs Institute. The scientific report will follow the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension checklist for Scoping Reviews. Searches will be conducted in 30 indexed and 12 grey literature databases, without time or location restrictions. The selection of studies will be carried out in three distinct phases: screening, eligibility and inclusion. After defining the sample, data from the selected studies will be systematically extracted into an electronic spreadsheet. The results will be presented descriptively through tables and graphs of absolute and relative frequency. In addition, the PRISMA Scoping Review flow chart will be presented to present the process of searching, including and excluding articles and documents.Ethics and dissemination This scoping review study does not require prior ethical approval as it uses publicly available and already published studies. The research protocol is registered in the Open Science Framework (osf.io/bw6r7). The findings will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented at ophthalmology and/or transplantation conferences through oral presentations or posters.

In this work, epoxy resin-based composites reinforced with nanoclays, nanoalumina, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (0.15, 0.50, and 1.50% vol were submitted to morphological characterization by scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopies, electrical tests through electrical impedance spectroscopy, and electromagnetic analyses (scattering parameters), in the frequency range of 8.2 to 12.4 GHz. SEM images of the CNT composite revealed nanotube clusters in the matrix. The proximity between the CNTs is corroborated by the increase in the electrical conductivity of the composite due to the formation of a long-range electron transport network, which favored the polarization effect, absorption losses (SEA = 1.33 dB), reflection (SER = 3.38 dB) and reflection loss (RL = -6.61 dB at 10.8 GHz). Composites with nanoclays and nanoalumina showed no significant electrical and electromagnetic results.

This study aimed to optimize the extraction of a blue colorant using ultrasound-assisted technology employing water as the solvent from genipap, an Amazon fruit. Process conditions were optimized by multiresponse analysis through the antioxidant activity by the ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) assay, the total phenolic content, and the b* and C* color parameters. The optimized conditions of 70 °C, 325 W, solid: solvent ratio of 1:40 (m/v), and time of 10 min were validated externally at a level of 90 % confidence. The composition of aqueous blue extract obtained under the greatest conditions was evaluated by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). Besides, in vitro bioactivities such as digestive enzymatic inhibitions assays, and antiproliferative activity through human cells assays were evaluated. Genipin, geniposide, and other ten iridoids were identified in the aqueous blue extract. The natural colorant obtained presented the capacity of inhibiting enzymes involved in lipid and glucose digestion, suggesting a potential control of obesity and glucose levels in blood without showing cytotoxicity. Therefore, this study presented, for the first time, the optimal operational conditions to obtain a natural blue colorant from genipap in a green approach with interesting biological properties for the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract Invariant natural killer T (NKT) cell subsets are defined based on their cytokine-production profiles and transcription factors. Their distribution is different in C57BL/6 (B6) and BALB/c mice, with a bias for NKT1 and NKT2/NKT17 subsets, respectively. Here, we show that the non-classical class I-like major histocompatibility complex CD1 molecules CD1d2, expressed in BALB/c and not in B6 mice, could not account for this difference. We find however that NKT cell subset distribution is intrinsic to bone marrow derived NKT cells, regardless of syngeneic CD1d-ligand recognition, and that multiple intrinsic factors are likely involved. Finally, we find that CD1d expression levels in combination with T cell antigen receptor signal strength could also influence NKT cell distribution and function. Overall, this study indicates that CD1d-mediated TCR signals and other intrinsic signals integrate to influence strain-specific NKT cell differentiation programs and subset distributions.

Numerous Candida species are responsible for fungal infections; however, Candida albicans stands out among the others. Treatment with fluconazole is often ineffective due to the resistance phenotype mediated by transmembrane transporters and/or biofilm formation, mechanisms of resistance commonly found in C. albicans strains. A previous study by our group demonstrated that batzelladine D can inhibit the Pdr5p transporter in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In the present study, our aim was to investigate the efficacy of batzelladine D in inhibiting the main efflux pumps of Candida albicans, CaCdr1p and CaCdr2p, as well as to evaluate the effect of the compound on C. albicans biofilm. Assays were conducted using a clinical isolate of Candida albicans expressing both transporters. Additionally, to allow the study of each transporter, S. cerevisiae mutant strains overexpressing CaCdr1p or CaCdr2p were used. Batzelladine D was able to reverse the fluconazole resistance phenotype by acting on both transporters. The compound synergistically improved the effect of fluconazole against the clinical isolate when tested in the Caenorhabditis elegans animal model. Moreover, the compound disrupted the preformed biofilm. Based on the obtained data, the continuation of batzelladine D studies as a potential new antifungal agent and/or chemosensitizer in Candida albicans infections can be suggested.

This study aimed at investigating the chemical composition and a selected group of bioactivities of jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril L.) pod residue. An aqueous extract (deionized water; AE) and a hydroethanolic extract (ethanol: deionized water, 70:30 v/v; ETOH) were obtained via maceration. Ten phenolic compounds were characterized via LC-DAD-ESI/MSn: seven procyanidins, two quercetin derivatives and one taxifolin derivative, with dimers and trimers of procyanidins being the main components of both extracts. Total phenolic compound levels of 2.42 ± 0.06 and 11 ± 1 mg/g were found in AE and ETOH, respectively; however, only seven compounds were identified in ETOH. The jatoba pod residue extracts showed notable antioxidant activities: ETOH had greater antioxidant potential in the OxHLIA and DPPH assays (IC50 = 25.4 μg/mL and 0.71 μg/mL, respectively); however, EA demonstrated greater potential in the FRAP system (IC50 = 2001.0 µM TE/mg). Only AE showed antiproliferative potential, being effective against cell lines of gastric (GI50 = 35 ± 1 µg/mL) and breast (GI50 = 89 ± 4 µg/mL) adenocarcinomas. Likewise, only AE showed modest anti-inflammatory potential (IC50 = 225 ± 2 µg/mL) in mouse macrophages. Bacteriostatic effects against bacteria were exerted by both extracts. Enterococcus faecalis and Listeria monocytogenes (MICs = 2.5 mg/mL) were especially sensitive to the ETOH extract. Taken together, the results suggest potential for jatoba pod residue as a source of molecules with biological activities and with possible industrial applications.

Este artigo apresenta um relato de experiência sobre uma intervenção pedagógica, pensada a partir das aulas do Mestrado Profissional em Filosofia (PROFI-FILO - IFPE), que buscou explorar estratégias inovadoras nas aulas de Filosofia na Escola Técnica Estadual Maria Ferreira Martins da cidade de Itaíba – Pernambuco. A prática pedagógica buscou estimular o aprendizado prático e reflexivo, no qual o saber filosófico fosse mobilizado por meio de recortes da realidade em conexão com outras expressões do conhecimento, fazendo uso pedagógico das tecnologias digitais de informação e comunicação (TDICs). Nesta proposta pedagógica, procurou-se trabalhar os conteúdos do currículo de Filosofia a partir de Metodologias Ativas, em especial, da Aprendizagem Baseada em Problemas (PBL), culminando na produção de episódios de podcasts pelos alunos. Embora a proposta destaque o uso das novas tecnologias, buscou-se no arcabouço teórico da Filosofia do Diálogo, de Martin Buber, suporte fundamental para enfatizar a importância dos processos dialógicos na promoção do resgate da dimensão humana no ambiente escolar. Assim, espera-se que o presente artigo possa contribuir para a reflexão sobre o papel do diálogo na humanização das relações entre os alunos; sobre práticas pedagógicas mais dinâmicas e participativas, que integrem de forma mais competente o uso das novas tecnologias nas aulas de Filosofia.

O artigo apresenta os primeiros resultados de uma investigação desenvolvida no âmbito do Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisa sobre Patrimônio Bibliográfico e Documental; também é fruto de intenso debate entre os autores. O tema é a Biblioteca Histórica do Itamaraty, instalada na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil; e vinculada ao atual Ministério das Relações Exteriores. Para essa espécie, do que chamou Matthew Battles, “Bibiografia de uma Biblioteca”, ao estudar, em 2004, a “Widener Library”, objetivou-se deslindar e problematizar, por meio da pesquisa documental, o contexto de sua criação em 1842. A leitura e análise das fontes revelaram a importância de determinados acervos considerados como fundadores, pela força instrumental que imprimiram aos interesses do próprio Ministério, como fez emergir o recorte cronológico desse trabalho, ou seja, 1902 e 1912. Como um dia disse Gabriel Naudé (1600-1653) uma biblioteca sem organização e sem propósito para formação de sua coleção é um mero ajuntamento de livros. Fiando-se nessa premissa, concluímos que durante o período selecionado para este estudo, graças as formas de gestão engendradas por José Maria da Silva Paranhos Júnior, Barão do Rio Branco, livros da BHI passaram a ser instrumentos que subsidiariam processos decisórios da chancelaria, além de adquirir uma face associada à uma unidade de informação.

Resumo Objetivo Validar o conteúdo e a aparência de um protocolo gráfico para avaliação do cuidado seguro de enfermagem a pacientes em hemodiálise. Método Estudo metodológico com abordagem quantitativa, organizado em três procedimentos: teóricos, a partir de uma scoping review; empíricos, na qual ocorreu processo de construção do protocolo gráfico e checklist para avaliação do cuidado seguro; por fim, os analíticos, para a validação propriamente dita com uso da técnica Delphi e participação de nove juízes especialistas em duas rodadas para o alcance da concordância. Resultados Elaboraram-se o checklist e o protocolo gráfico. Quanto à validade de conteúdo, em Delphi I, três critérios obtiveram Coeficiente de Validade de Conteúdo =0,77 no checklist. No que corresponde ao Delphi II, foram alcançados 80% em todos os itens referentes ao Coeficiente de Validade de Conteúdo, e todos os índices ficaram acima de 0,80. A validação de aparência ocorreu utilizando critérios de Suitability Assessment of Materials no Delphi I. Foi possível atingir um Coeficiente de Validade de Conteúdo total maior que 0,80 em todos, enquanto que, no Delphi II, os protocolos alcançaram concordância maior que 80% e Coeficiente de Validade de Conteúdo maior que 0,88, já que o checklist apresentou maior Coeficiente de Validade de Conteúdo com 0,91. Conclusão Apresentam-se o protocolo gráfico e o checklist para avaliação do cuidado seguro aos pacientes em hemodiálise válidos em seu conteúdo e aparência.

High rates of limestone have been increasingly utilized in newly converted areas for grain production in agricultural frontier regions to expedite the short-term correction of soil fertility, leading to compensatory yields. However, there is a lack of information about different doses of lime and gypsum for soils in the Cerrado of Matopiba, especially in the state of Piauí, Brazil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of doses of lime and gypsum in newly converted areas for soybean production in the Cerrado of Southwest Piauí. The study was carried out in the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 crop years, on yellow Oxisol soil, in a randomized block design and treatments following a 5 × 4 factorial: five lime rates (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 t ha−1) and four gypsum rates (0, 1, 2 and 4 t ha−1), with four replicates. The standard lime and gypsum rates were 5 t ha−1 and 1 t ha−1, respectively. Soil fertility attributes (0.0–0.2, 0.2–0.4, and 0.4–0.6 m), nutritional status of plants, and soybean yield were measured. The increases in grain yield using a lime rate of 10 t ha−1 were 18% and 12% in the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 crop years, respectively. High lime rates provide a reduction in the concentrations of P, K, and cationic micronutrients in soil, thereby reducing leaf contents of macro- and micronutrients in soybean plants. Concentrations of Ca, Mg, and S in subsurface layers were raised to proper levels, similar to those recommended for topsoil (0.0–0.2 m). The use of gypsum and lime in newly converted areas for soybean cultivation provides quick improvement in soil chemical conditions and reduction in acidity components. The application of 10 t ha−1 of lime improved the soil chemical environment in the Matopiba region the short time available for chemical reactions to occur, allowing soybean cultivation in newly converted areas of Cerrado into agriculture.

Introduction: Organ transplantation is one of the most successful advances in modern medicine. However, a legal system is necessary for its practice to be free from ethical flaws and to respect donors, recipients, and family members. Objective: To map the global legislation regulating the donation, capture and distribution processes of organs and tissues from deceased donors for transplants. Method: A scoping review according to the Joanna Briggs Institute was conducted in the following databases: Medline, CINAHL, Virtual Health Library, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Science Direct, and EMBASE, as well as gray literature, and reported according to the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. Results: We identified 3302 records, of which 77 were analyzed which enabled mapping the type of consent adopted and the existence of current legislation for harvesting organs and tissues after circulatory and brain death. Conclusion: Opt-out consent predominates in Europe, and there is harvesting after brain and circulatory death. Opt-out predominates in the Americas, while Opt-in and harvesting of organs and tissues after brain death predominate in Asia and Oceania. The procurement of organs and tissues from deceased donors is practically non-existent in Africa.

In the quest to understand the dynamics of female Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) combats, this research delves into the world of winning and losing. By comparing time-motion analysis based on different outcomes, our objective was to unveil the movement patterns of victory. Our sample included 209 winning (W) versus 209 losing (L) female international BJJ combats, presenting a comprehensive picture of the combat landscape. Through time-motion analysis, we explored various BJJ combat phases, such as approach, gripping, transition, side control, mounting, attack, defense, low-intensity movement, and total time. The statistical results highlight significant differences between winners and losers in key aspects of the combats. Notably, side control (W= 47.7 [27.8; 96.5]s vs. L= 27.3 [20.3; 41.9]s), mount (W= 40.0 [16.6; 85.9]s vs. L= 15.9 [6.1; 25.6]s), attack (W= 50.1 [28.6; 86.7]s vs. L= 16.6 [7.7; 35.7]s), defense (W= 14.6 [6.6; 38.2]s vs. L= 38.8 [17.7; 77.0]s), and low-intensity movement (W= 55.9 [23.4; 132.2]s vs. L= 111.5 [58.7; 225.6]s) revealed differences between the winners and losers. The implications extend to sports psychology and judo training, providing knowledge for enhancing performance, optimizing training programs, and making strategic decisions during combat.
