Background: As isolated ruptures of the caudal cruciate ligament (CdCL) are rare in dogs, there is no consensus on the indications and the gold-standard surgical technique for treatment. Case Description: A 2-year-old Shepherd dog with an isolated rupture of the CdCL was treated with a new surgical technique for synthetic reconstruction. Three bone tunnels were drilled in the femur and the tibia under arthroscopic guidance to make sure the anatomical insertions of the physiological ligament were respected. An Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) implant was fixed with interference screws to reconstruct the CdCL. A synovial inflammation remained present on radiographs for six months after the surgery, together with a mild lameness. However, the dog fully recovered clinically and recovered a normal level of activity after six months. LOAD results at six months and one year postoperatively were excellent. Conclusion: The use of an UHMWPE implant fixed with interference screws to reconstruct the CdCL allowed a return to full function of the knee without complications, despite a persistent synovial inflammation and mild lameness for a 6-month period after the surgery. The success of this isolated surgical technique could lead to improvements in the surgical management of CdCL rupture, if these initial results are confirmed by a prospective study with a larger number of patients. Background: Rupture of the common calcaneal tendon is the second most frequent tendon rupture in dogs and may lead to severe lameness and pain. Surgical repair consists of re-apposition of the damaged tendon ends using sutures, but this type of repair is not always possible especially if the tendon has retracted. Tendon augmentation with an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) implant is a recent solution to support the sutures and allow the repair of the canine calcaneal tendon. However, its biomechanical fixation strength remains untested for this pathology. Aim: To evaluate the biomechanical fixation strength of an UHMWPE implant for the repair of the canine calcaneal tendon. Methods: Ex-vivo biomechanical study was carried out on eight cadaveric hindlimbs from four adult dogs. Hindlimbs were tested under two independent modalities: proximal tendinous fixation (PTF) and distal calcaneus fixation (DCF), using a testing machine. PTF was achieved by eight simple interrupted polypropylene sutures performed through the UHMWPE implant. The latter was sandwiched inside the gastrocnemius tendon, which had previously been incised over about 5 cm longitudinally, and through the tendon of the superficial digital flexor. DCF was performed using an interference screw, which locked the UHMWPE implant into a calcaneus tunnel drilled perpendicularly. Results: Yield, failure load and linear stiffness (mean ± SD) for the DCF modality were 920 ± 139 N, 1007 ± 146 N and 92 ± 15.21, respectively, which were greater than for the PTF modality (663 ± 92 N, 685 ± 84 N and 25.71 ± 5.74, respectively, P [Open Vet J 2023; 13(5.000): 645-653]

Semiaquatic bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Gerromorpha) are predatory insects that occupy a wide range of freshwater and marine habitats, with some secondary transitions to terrestrial life. They currently represent more than 2100 species distributed through all continents, except for Antarctica, and are especially rich in the Neotropical and Oriental regions. Although the fauna from the former region is relatively well known, some areas remain almost unexplored. Such is the case of French Guiana, where only a few species have been previously recorded, several of which based on collections made in the 19th and early 20th centuries. As a result of material recently collected in the territory, the descriptions of Rhagovelia depressa Rodrigues, Khila & Moreira, sp. nov., R. tantilloides Rodrigues, Khila & Moreira, sp. nov. and Steinovelia vittata Rodrigues, Khila & Moreira, sp. nov. (Veliidae) are presented here. New records for 28 species are also provided, of which Cylindrostethus hungerfordi Drake & Harris, 1934, Neogerris magnus (Kuitert, 1942), Rheumatobates mangrovensis (China, 1943), R. trinitatis (China, 1943), Ovatametra obesa Kenaga, 1942, Telmatometra fusca Kenaga, 1941, T. parva Kenaga, 1941 (Gerridae), Mesovelia amoena Uhler, 1894 (Mesoveliidae), Rhagovelia brunae Magalhães & Moreira, 2016, R. elegans Uhler, 1894, R. ephydros (Drake & Van Doesburg, 1966), R. equatoria D. Polhemus, 1997, R. evidis Bacon, 1948, R. guianana D. Polhemus, 1997, R. tenuipes Champion, 1898, Oiovelia cunucunumana (Drake & Maldonado-Capriles, 1952), Stridulivelia alia (Drake, 1957), S. stridulata (Hungerford, 1929), and S. tersa (Drake & Harris, 1941) (Veliidae) are reported from French Guiana for the first time.

Sexual conflict may result in the escalating coevolution of sexually antagonistic traits. However, our understanding of the evolutionary dynamics of antagonistic traits and their role in association with sex-specific escalation remains limited. Here we study sexually antagonistic coevolution in a genus of water striders called Rhagovelia. We identified a set of male grasping traits and female anti-grasping traits used during pre-mating struggles and show that natural variation of these traits is associated with variation in mating performance in the direction expected for antagonistic coevolution. Phylogenetic mapping detected signal of escalation of these sexually antagonistic traits suggesting an ongoing arms race. Moreover, their escalation appears to be influenced by a trade-off with dispersal through flight in both sexes. Altogether our results highlight how sexual interactions and natural selection may have shaped sex-specific antagonistic trait coevolution.
