- Abstract
The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, ‘to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation’, or ‘are there too many genera in the Boletales?’ and even more importantly, ‘what should be done with the tremendously diverse ‘dark fungal taxa?’ There are undeniable differences in mycologists’ perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. The results of such surveys will be presented to the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) and the Nomenclature Committee for Fungi (NCF) with opinions and percentages of votes for and against.
The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and funguslike taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists.
For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. The results of such surveys will be presented to the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) and the Nomenclature Committee

© 2018 International Mycological Association. Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not re

Mushroom hunters in rural areas call and identify wild edible mushrooms on the basis of their local or common names. Local names of mushrooms are also widely used in folk medicine and particularly in shamanic and religious rituals. Linking of local names with their respective scientific names is of fundamental importance for the exploitation of their market potential and for prevention of poisoning. We present a list of common names given to 45 wild edible mushroom taxa (28 basidiomycetes and 17 ascomycetes) occurring in Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Romania, Serbia, and Spain. The selected taxa are Agaricus campestris., A. crocodilinus, Amanita caesarea, Boletus aereus, B. edulis, B. pinophilus, B. reticulatus, Calocybe gambosa, Calvatia gigantea Cantharellus cibarius, Craterellus cinereus, C. cornucopioides, C. tubaeformis, Cyclocybe cylindracea, Delastria rosea, Hydnum repandum, Infundibulicybe geotropa, Lactarius deliciosus, L. salmonicolor, L. sanguifluus, L. semisanguifluus, Macrolepiota procera, Morchella elata, Picoa juniperi, P. lefebvrei, Pleurotus eryngii, P. eryngii var. ferulae, P. nebrodensis, P. ostreatus, Podaxis pistillaris, Russula cyanoxantha, R. virescens, Terfezia arenaria, T. boudieri, T. claveryi, T. leptoderma, Tirmania nivea, T. pinoyi, Tuber aestivum, T. asa, T. borchii, T. brumale, T. magnatum, T. melanosporum, and T. oligospermum. The national and the regional common names (if known) are also reported.

A list of proposed activities/objectives by the members of OPTIMA Commission on Fungi is here reported: Prepare a list of local names related to wild edible mushrooms (WEM); Define a provisional catalogue of macrofungi that could be characterized as typical‐representatives of the Mediterranean region (MR); Publish a Checklist of all macrofungi occurring in the MR; Setup of a literature database on fungi occurring in the MR; Promote studies on Mediterranean fungi to be used as food and medicine, and examine their potential in other biotechnological applications (e.g. mushroom cultivation, treatment and detoxification of wastes etc.), incl. large‐scale (commercial) use; Document ethnomycological knowledge in the MR (incl. traditional use of mushrooms in local communities); Prepare a list of threatened fungal species (with emphasis on those of economic importance) in the MR and adopt suitable strategies for their conservation. Assess invasion and determine possible risks from alien species. Examine existing legislation and regulations on harvesting of WEM and on quality of fungal products; Promote mycological education and disseminate fungal‐related knowledge in a wider audience; Examine existing protocols used for various experimental purposes in fungal taxonomy (e.g. molecular systematics, phylogeny, chemotaxonomy, characterization of secondary metabolites, proximate analyses, etc.) and possibly adopt common improved approaches/techniques to deal with pertinent issues; Examine the possibilities for networking the Institutions of participating members in order to seek and obtain funding from the E.U. or other national and international Organizations. Assess the potential of collaboration with other Societies, SME's and/or NGO's having pertinent interests and priorities.

The systematic integrity of European Gymnopus subsect. Levipedes is verified based on anatomic-morphological characters with support from DNA sequences of ITS and translation elongation factor 1-alpha genes. Seven species (G. alpinus, G. aquosus, G. dryophilus - including var. lanipes, G. erythropus, G. fagiphilus, G. hybridus, and G. ocior) belonging to this subsection are included. We clarify the concepts of G. dryophilus and G. ocior, which were occasionally confused in older literature. Due to unavailability of previously selected neotype of G. dryophilus the substitute neotype specimen is selected. Gymnopus dryophilus var. lanipes is confirmed as a variety; no important differences from nominotypical variability were detected. All discriminative characters used for identification of these species are discussed in detail. An identification key is also provided.

EMERALDS , *MINES & mineral resources , *PHLOGOPITE , *MAGNETITE , *METABASITE - Abstract
Zambia is considered the world's second most important source of emeralds by value (after Colombia). The deposits are located near the Kafubu River in the Ndola Rural Restricted Area. Emeralds have been known from this region since 1928, but significant commercial production began only in the 1970s. As of mid-2004, most of the emeralds were being mined from large open-pit operations at the Kagem, Grizzly, and Chantete concessions. Economic emerald mineralization is confined almost entirely to phlogopite reaction zones adjacent to Be-bearing quartz-tourmaline veins that metasomatically altered Cr-bearing metabasite host rocks. Nearly all of the rough is cut in India and Israel. Zambian emeralds have relatively high R.I. and S.G. values, with inclusions typically consisting of partially healed fissures, as well as actinolite, phlogopite, dravite, fluorapatite, magnetite, and hematite. They contain moderate amounts of Cr, Mg, and Na, moderate-to-high Fe contents, and relatively high Cs and Li. Although many features of Zambian emeralds are comparable to those from other commercially important localities, in many cases they may be separated by a combination of their physical properties, microscopic characteristics, and chemical composition. - Abstract
We studied the taxonomy of Pluteus podospileus and similar species using morphological and molecular (nrITS, TEF1-α ) data, including a detailed study of the type collections of P. inflatus var. alneus , Pluteus minutissimus f. major, and P. granulatus var. tenellus . Within the P. podospileus complex, we phylogenetically confirmed six species in Europe, five in Asia, and eight in North America. Based on our results, we recognize P. seticeps as a separate species occurring in North America, while P. podospileus is limited to Eurasia. We describe six new species and a new variety: P. absconditus , P. fuscodiscus , P. gausapatus , P. inexpectatus , P. millsii, and P. notabilis and its variety, P. notabilis var. insignis . We elevate Pluteus seticeps var. cystidiosus to species rank as Pluteus cystidiosus . Based on the holotype of P. inflatus var. alneus , collections of P. inflatus identified by Velenovský, and several modern collections, we resurrect the name P. inflatus . Based on molecular analyses of syntypes of Pluteus minutissimus f. major and a holotype of Pluteus granulatus var. tenellus , we synonymize them under P. inflatus . We also increase our knowledge about the morphology and distribution of P. cutefractus ., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. - Abstract
Agaric fungi are an important group of macromycetes with diverse ecological and functional properties, yet are poorly studied in many parts of the world. Here, we comprehensively analyzed 558 agaric species in Iran to reveal their resources of edible and poisonous species as well as their ecological guilds and luminescence potential. We also made a thorough survey of the antioxidant activity of the species. Phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed based on nuclear ribosomal LSU and ITS sequences. Our results reveal that agarics of Iran comprise about 189 edible, 128 poisonous, 254 soil saprotrophic, 172 ectomycorrhizal, 146 wood-inhabiting, 18 leaf/litter-inhabiting, 9 parasitic, and 19 luminescent species. Twenty percent of the Iranian agaric species possess antioxidant activity, phylogenetically distributed in four orders and 21 agaric families. About 5% of the antioxidant species can be considered strong antioxidants, many of which are also edible and could be utilized to develop functional foods. This is the first study combining phylogeny and antioxidant potential of agaric mushrooms in a large scale, and the obtained results would guide the selection of agaric taxa to be examined in the future for taxonomic revisions, biotechnological applications, and applied phylogeny studies., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2022 Ghobad-Nejhad, Antonín, Moghaddam and Langer.)

- Abstract
We studied the taxonomy of Pluteus romellii , and morphologically similar Holarctic species in the /romellii clade of section Celluloderma , using morphological and molecular data (nrITS, TEF1-α ). Pluteus romellii is lectotypified and epitypified and accepted as an exclusively Eurasian species. Pluteus lutescens and P. pallescens are considered synonyms of P. romellii . Pluteus fulvibadius is accepted as a related, but separate, North American species. Five species in the /romellii clade are described as new to science: two from North America ( P. austrofulvus and P. parvisporus ), one from Asia ( P. parvicarpus ), one from Europe ( P. siccus ), and one widely distributed across the Holarctic region ( P. vellingae ). Basidioma size, pileus color, lamellae color, basidiospore size, hymenial cystidia shape and size, habitat and geographical distribution help separate the species described here, but in some instances only molecular data allows for confident identification. The current status of P. californicus , P. melleipes , P. romellii var. luteoalbus , P. splendidus , P. sternbergii and P. sulphureus is discussed., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. - Abstract
Based on phylogenetic analyses, some newly studied Chinese mushroom specimens were found to represent two distinct species within the genus Gymnopus . Along with G.fusipes (sect. Gymnopus) they form a distinct clade with high support, although their macromorphological characters seem to be closer to members of Gymnopus sect. Levipedes or sect. Vestipedes (Collybiopsis). When examined in detail, their micromorphological characters, especially the type of pileipellis, support them as new members of G. sect. Gymnopus. Therefore, two new species, G.omphalinoides and G.schizophyllus , and the emended circumscription of sect. Gymnopus are proposed in this paper. Detailed morphological descriptions, colour photos, illustrations of the two new species, morphological comparisons with similar taxa and the molecular-phylogenetic analyses of the combined nrITS and nrLSU data are presented. A key to the known species of G. sect. Gymnopus is also presented., (Ji-Peng Li, Vladimír Antonín, Genevieve Gates, Lu Jiang, Tai-Hui Li, Yu Li, Bin Song, Chun-Ying Deng.)

- Abstract
Revision of the taxonomically complicated European Melanoleuca taxa with well-developed macrocystidia (subgenus Melanoleuca ) is presented. The species are delimited by macro- and micromorphological characters and by multilocus molecular data based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS), second largest subunit of RNA polymerase I ( rpb2 ), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha ( tef1 ) genes. The study is based on both type material and recent collections. Phylogenetically, these taxa form 10 clades recognized as 11 separate species: M. albomarginata, M. ammophila, M. bataillei, M. cavipes, M. friesii, M. granadensis, M. melaleuca, M. pallidicutis, M. polioleuca, M. strictipes , and M. variabilis . Three species, M. albomarginata, M. ammophila , and M. variabilis , are described as new. Melanoleuca melaleuca is discussed here as the type species of the genus. Discussion of other older names and their taxonomic status is also provided.

- Abstract
Desarmillaria caespitosa , a North American vicariant species of European D. tabescens , is redescribed in detail based on recent collections from the USA and Mexico. This species is characterized by morphological features and multilocus phylogenetic analyses using portions of nuc rDNA 28S (28S), translation elongation factor 1-alpha ( tef1 ), the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II ( rpb2 ), actin ( act ), and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase ( gpd ). A neotype of D. caespitosa is designated here. Morphological and genetic differences between D. caespitosa and D. tabescens were identified. Morphologically, D. caespitosa differs from D. tabescens by having wider basidiospores, narrower cheilocystidia, which are often irregular or mixed (regular, irregular, or coralloid), and narrower caulocystidia. Phylogenetic analyses of five independent gene regions show that D. caespitosa and D. tabescens are separated by nodes with strong support. The new combination, D. caespitosa , is proposed.

- Abstract
Melanoleuca is one of the taxonomically most complicated genera of Agaricomycetes with several taxonomically lineages. The subgenus Urticocystis of the genus Melanoleuca contains species with either urticoid or absent cheilocystidia. In this paper, three new European species, Melanoleuca galbuserae , Melanoleuca fontenlae , and Melanoleuca acystidiata are described as new to science. Melanoleuca galbuserae , related to Melanoleuca stepposa and Melanoleuca tristis , was discovered in alpine grasslands in North Italy. The type specimens and recent collections of Melanoleuca angelesiana , Melanoleuca castaneofusca , Melanoleuca luteolosperma , Melanoleuca pseudopaedida , and Melanoleuca robertiana were sequenced and morphologically examined. Moreover, the related Melanoleuca microcephala and Melanoleuca paedida were included in morphological examination and DNA sequence analyses. All the species were delimited by macro- and micromorphological characters and the multigene phylogenetic analyses of a combined (ITS, rpb2, and tef1) dataset on the basis of the species tree estimation. In accordance with new molecular and morphological data, we suggest taxonomic reappraisal of M. pseudopaedida and M. robertiana , and M. fontenlae and M. acystidiata are proposed as new species. The differences between the type material of M. angelesiana from the USA and European M. angelesiana specimens are discussed.

- Abstract
In this third contribution involving new Cantharellus species from South Korea, two new species are introduced. In addition, we document a first report of the recently described Japanese Cantharellus anzutake outside of Japan based on identical ITS sequence data. Cantharellus citrinus sp. nov. is introduced as a new member of subgenus Cinnabarini, to which the closely related Korean C. albovenosus and Chinese C. phloginus also belong. Cantharellus curvatus sp. nov. is introduced as a new member of subgenus Parvocantharellus, in which the Korean C. koreanus was recently placed. The respective placements of the new taxa are significantly supported by a phylogenetic analysis of sequences from the transcription elongation factor ( tef -1)., (Bart Buyck, Valérie Hofstetter, Rhim Ryoo, Kang-Hyeon Ka, Vladimír Antonín.)
