The study of lipid molecular fossils by traditional biomarker analysis requires bulk sample crushing, followed by solvent extraction, and then the analysis of the extract by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This traditional analysis mixes all organic compounds in the sample regardless of their origins, with a loss of information on the spatial distribution of organic molecules within the sample. These shortcomings can be overcome using the chemical mapping of intact samples. Spectroscopic techniques such as UV fluorescence or Raman spectroscopy, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) are among those elemental and molecular mapping techniques. This study employed femtosecond (fs) laser ablation combined with single-photon ionization, a method called fs-laser desorption postionization mass spectrometry (fs-LDPI-MS). A pulsed ∼75 fs, 800 nm laser was used to ablate the geological sample, which was then photoionized after a few microseconds by a pulsed 7.9 eV vacuum ultraviolet laser. An organic carbon-rich geological sample was used for this study to map hydrocarbon biomarkers in sediments that were previously studied by GC-MS. The petrography of this sample was examined by optical and fluorescence microscopy. It is demonstrated here that fs-LDPI-MS combined with petrography for multimodal imaging can expose buried compounds within the sample via in situ layer removal. When used in conjunction with traditional organic geochemical analysis, this method has the potential to determine the spatial distribution of organic biomarkers in geological material. Finally, fs-LDPI-MS imaging data are compared with ToF-SIMS imaging that is commonly used for such studies.

Several modern power production systems utilize supercritical CO2 (sCO2), which can contain O2 and H2O as impurities. These impurities may degrade the compatibility of structural alloys through accelerated oxidation. However, it remains unclear which of these impurities plays a bigger role in high-temperature reactions taking place in sCO2. In this study, various model and commercial Fe‐ and Ni‐based alloys were exposed in 300 bar sCO2 at 750 °C to low levels (50 ppm) of O2 and H2O for 1,000 h. 18O-enriched water was used to enable the identification of the oxygen source in the post-exposure characterization of the samples. However, oxygen from the water did not accumulate in the scale, which consisted of Cr2O3 in the cases where a protective oxide formed. A 2wt.% Ti addition to a Ni-22%Cr model alloy resulted in the formation of thicker oxides in sCO2, while a 1wt.% Al addition reduced the scale thickness. A synergistic effect of both Al and Ti additions resulted in an even thicker oxide than what was formed solely by Ti, similar to observations for Ni-based alloy 282.

Replacement reactions commonly alter the multiscale pore structures of rocks during fluid-rock interactions. Analysis of these processes in various model fluid-rock systems during controlled laboratory experiments provides insights into the origins of microstructures found in natural materials. This study focused on understanding the effects of initial starting material permeability and resultant differences in transport pathways on porosity and mineralogical changes during limestone dolomitization. A series of replacement experiments (32–317 days in duration) have been conducted in which 1.59 cm (5/8 in.) diameter cores of two different limestones were reacted with saturated MgCl2 solutions at 200 °C. The Texas Cream (Austin Chalk) is a high-porosity, high-permeability limestone, whereas both the porosity and permeability of the Carthage Marble (Burlington Limestone) are relatively low. Altered limestones were imaged using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF–SIMS) and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). A representative grain boundary of the low-porosity limestone was targeted for a focused ion beam (FIB) lift-out and characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These results were coupled with analyses of radial changes in the porosity distribution of the core derived from X-ray and neutron small- and ultra-small angle scattering ((U)SANS/(U)SAXS). The high-porosity/permeability limestone showed a four times faster bulk replacement rate than the lower-porosity/permeability material, and a different mechanism of porosity development. For the low-porosity limestone, a two-stage replacement occurred, with the reacted region of the core consisting of an inner rim in which the limestone was replaced by two calcite-dolomite solid solutions, and an outer rim in which the dolomite was replaced by magnesite. Elongated pores formed along grain boundaries at the initial limestone/dolomite reaction interface, and additional nanometer-scale porosity was formed at the secondary magnesite replacement rim. Grain boundaries were identified as preferential pathways for transport leading to dolomitization and a grain boundary diffusion rate was calculated based on microstructural characterization. In contrast, replacement in the high-porosity limestone was accompanied by porosity generation through replacement of individual grains by dolomite throughout the sample and, in longer runs, magnesite in outer parts of the core. These observations emphasize that both the mechanisms of the replacement reaction and the microstructure and chemistry of the replaced product are contingent on the initial structure of the starting material.

Indirect absorption extended below the direct transition edge and increase in carrier lifetime derived from Rashba spin–orbit coupling may advance theoptoelectronicapplications of metalhalideperovskites. Spin-orbit coupling in halide perovskites is due to the presence of heavy elements in their structure. However, when these materials lack an inversion symmetry, for example by the application of strain, spin–orbit coupling becomes odd in the electron’s momentum giving rise to a splitting in the electronic energy bands. Here we report on the observation of a large Rashba splitting of 117 meV at room temperature, as predicted by relativistic first-principles calculations, in halide perovskitesingle crystalsthrough a facile compositional engineering approach. Partial substitution oforganic cationsbyrubidiumin single crystals induces significant indirect absorption and dual peakphotoluminescenceas a result of a large Rashba splitting. We measured circularly polarized photoluminescence and magneto-photoluminescence in perovskite films printed by single crystals as well as magneto-electroluminescence and magneto-photocurrent in spin-LEDs based on perovskite single crystals. They indicated significant spin-momentum locking due to the large Rashba effect. A hybrid perovskite single crystalphotodetectorachieved record figures of merit, including detectivity of more than 1.3 × 1018Jones which represents a three orders of magnitude improvement compared to the to date record. These findings show that facile compositional engineering of perovskite single crystals holds great promise for further advancing the optoelectronic properties of existing materials.

Ferroelectric materials exhibit spontaneous polarization that can be switched by electric field. Beyond traditional applications as nonvolatile capacitive elements, the interplay between polarization and electronic transport in ferroelectric thin films has enabled a path to neuromorphic device applications involving resistive switching. A fundamental challenge, however, is that finite electronic conductivity may introduce considerable power dissipation and perhaps destabilize ferroelectricity itself. Here, tunable microwave frequency electronic response of domain walls injected into ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3) on the level of a single nanodomain is revealed. Tunable microwave response is detected through first-order reversal curve spectroscopy combined with scanning microwave impedance microscopy measurements taken near 3 GHz. Contributions of film interfaces to the measured AC conduction through subtractive milling, where the film exhibited improved conduction properties after removal of surface layers, are investigated. Using statistical analysis and finite element modeling, we inferred that the mechanism of tunable microwave conductance is the variable area of the domain wall in the switching volume. These observations open the possibilities for ferroelectric memristors or volatile resistive switches, localized to several tens of nanometers and operating according to well-defined dynamics under an applied field. published

Spatial heterogeneity in composition and organisation of the primary cell wall affects the mechanics of cellular morphogenesis. However, directly correlating cell wall composition, organisation and mechanics has been challenging. To overcome this barrier, we applied atomic force microscopy coupled with infrared (AFM-IR) spectroscopy to generate spatially correlated maps of chemical and mechanical properties for paraformaldehyde-fixed, intact Arabidopsis thaliana epidermal cell walls. AFM-IR spectra were deconvoluted by non-negative matrix factorisation (NMF) into a linear combination of IR spectral factors representing sets of chemical groups comprising different cell wall components. This approach enables quantification of chemical composition from IR spectral signatures and visualisation of chemical heterogeneity at nanometer resolution. Cross-correlation analysis of the spatial distribution of NMFs and mechanical properties suggests that the carbohydrate composition of cell wall junctions correlates with increased local stiffness. Together, our work establishes new methodology to use AFM-IR for the mechanochemical analysis of intact plant primary cell walls.

Imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) is a powerful analytical technique widely used in biology, chemistry, and materials science fields that continue to expand. IMS provides a qualitative compositional analysis and spatial mapping with high chemical specificity. The spatial mapping information can be 2D or 3D depending on the analysis technique employed. Due to the combination of complex mass spectra coupled with spatial information, large high-dimensional datasets (hyperspectral) are often produced. Therefore, the use of automated computational methods for an exploratory analysis is highly beneficial. The fast-paced development of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools has received significant attention in recent years. These tools, in principle, can enable the unification of data collection and analysis into a single pipeline to make sampling and analysis decisions on the go. There are various ML approaches that have been applied to IMS data over the last decade. In this review, we discuss recent examples of the common unsupervised (principal component analysis, non-negative matrix factorization, k-means clustering, uniform manifold approximation and projection), supervised (random forest, logistic regression, XGboost, support vector machine), and other methods applied to various IMS datasets in the past five years. The information from this review will be useful for specialists from both IMS and ML fields since it summarizes current and representative studies of computational ML-based exploratory methods for IMS.

An emerging family of materials—metal halide perovskites (MHPs)—have made incredible achievements in optoelectronics in the past decade. Owing to its potential role in optoelectronic properties, the ferroic state of MHPs has been investigated by lots of researchers. Here, we review the literature regarding investigations into possible ferroic behaviors in MHPs. We summarize the recent discoveries of ferroic twin domains in MHPs. We examine the ferroelasticity and the ferroelectricity of these twin domains. Several properties relevant to the twin domains are critically analyzed, including crystallographic structure, mechanical variation, chemical variation, etc. Finally, we discussed the effects of these domains on materials’ optoelectronic properties and their potential roles in photovoltaic action.

The unique properties of ferroelectric materials enable a plethora of applications, which are hindered by the phenomenon known as ferroelectric fatigue that leads to the degradation of ferroelectric properties with polarization cycling. Multiple microscopic models explaining fatigue have been suggested; however, the chemical origins remain poorly understood. Here, we utilize multimodal chemical imaging that combines atomic force microscopy with time-of-flight secondary mass spectrometry to explore the chemical phenomena associated with fatigue in PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT) thin films. Investigations reveal that the degradation of ferroelectric properties is correlated with a local chemical change and migration of electrode ions into the PZT structure. Density functional theory simulations support the experimental results and demonstrate stable doping of the thin surface PZT layer with copper ions, leading to a decrease in the spontaneous polarization. Overall, the performed research allows for the observation and understanding of the chemical phenomena associated with polarization cycling and their effects on ferroelectric functionality., Ferroelectric fatigue degrades ferroelectric properties upon polarization cycling, but its underlying chemistry is poorly understood. Genome engineering for materials synthesis is a promising avenue for manufacturing materials with unique properties under ambient conditions. Biomineralization in diatoms, unicellular algae that use silica to construct micron-scale cell walls with nanoscale features, is an attractive candidate for functional synthesis of materials for applications including photonics, sensing, filtration, and drug delivery. Therefore, controllably modifying diatom structure through targeted genetic modifications for these applications is a very promising field. In this work, we used gene knockdown in Thalassiosira pseudonana diatoms to create modified strains with changes to structural morphology and linked genotype to phenotype using supervised machine learning. An artificial neural network (NN) was developed to distinguish wild and modified diatoms based on the SEM images of frustules exhibiting phenotypic changes caused by a specific protein (Thaps3_21880), resulting in 94% detection accuracy. Class activation maps visualized physical changes that allowed the NNs to separate diatom strains, subsequently establishing a specific gene that controls pores. A further NN was created to batch process image data, automatically recognize pores, and extract pore-related parameters. Class interrelationship of the extracted paraments was visualized using a multivariate data visualization tool, called CrossVis, and allowed to directly link changes in morphological diatom phenotype of pore size and distribution with changes in the genotype.

We present a combined experimental and computational study of surface segregation in thin films of nearly athermal blends of linear and bottlebrush polymers. The lengths of bottlebrush backbone (Nb), bottlebrush side chain (Nsc), and linear polystyrene host (Nm) are systematically varied to examine the effects of polymer architecture on phase behavior. From the experiments, combinations of architectural parameters are identified that produce enrichment and depletion of bottlebrush at the polymer–air interface. These surface segregation behaviors are consistent with entropy-dominated thermodynamics. In addition, the experiments reveal conditions where bottlebrush and linear polymers are equally preferred at the surface. Simulations based on the self-consistent field theory (SCFT) qualitatively capture the three types of surface segregation behaviors and highlight the delicate interplay of entropic and enthalpic effects. Seed coatings improve germination and offer higher crop yields through a blend of active ingredients (such as insecticides and fungicides), polymers, waxes, fillers, and pigments. To reach their full potential, fundamental formulation challenges bridging structure and function need to be addressed. In some instances, during industrial-volume packing and transportation, coated seeds do not flow well through elevators, conveyers, and applicators, which may reduce yield and add cost. In this work, we illustrate a combinatorial chemical imaging approach to study seed coatings at the microscale to link chemical and physical properties responsible for low seed flowability. The local chemical composition was examined using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and at comparable length scales, the local adhesive properties were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) force volume mapping. The link between the chemical and the adhesive properties was established by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). The correlative multimodal imaging approach developed here utilizing AFM force volume mapping, ToF-SIMS chemical mapping, and data analytics offers a path for linking function with localized chemistry when investigating multicomponent soft material systems.

A scintillating lithium indium diselenide (LISe) single crystal has recently been found to exhibit an eight-fold increase in its apparent light yield within 80 µm across the surface when excited by cold neutrons. The cause of this observation is currently unknown. In this paper, we report on our investigations to explain the previous observations of nonuniformity in scintillating LISe. Using a two-photon interband excitation instrument, we found that the lower and higher light yield regions “scintillate” at peak emission energies of 1.98 eV and 2.4 eV, respectively, and no region investigated exhibited both. Volumetric evaluation found a relatively uniform scintillation response in each region, verifying that the relatively flat spatial resolution of LISe substrates of varying thickness applied to neutron imaging is not from only near-surface scintillation mechanisms. Raman investigations indicate that the vibrational modes of the scintillating LISe substrate is somewhat different than that reported in literature, but no apparent difference between the two regions was observed. Using ToF-SIMS in each region, we found that the 1.98 eV emission region contains additional lithium, which is consistent with neutron absorption results. We suspect that the sharp transition in peak scintillation emission is due to a change in the charge state of Li-In antisites, but that the observed scintillation light yield and emission energy change is not directly correlated to crystal color. Qualitative comparison between the observed noise in the two-photon “scintillation” spectra indicates that the light yield between each region is not due to the quantum efficiency of the CCD used during cold neutron interrogation experiments, but an actual change in the light yield.

The plasma-surface interactions from samples of high-conductivity graphitic foam biased to 120 V and placed in 6–8 eV deuterium plasmas with densities as high as 1019 m−3 were investigated at the PSI-2 linear plasma device in Jülich. Graphitic foam-plasma interactions were also studied at the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator in Greifswald by exposure to hydrogen and helium plasmas using the Jülich multi-purpose manipulator. The purpose was to explore the possibility of using the material in a plasma facing component, and initial results were encouraging. In W7-X, no measurable erosion or cracking was observed. The PSI-2 samples received a deuterium fluence of 5 × 1025 m−2 resulting in an average erosion of 43 µm or about 5 mg per sample. Residual gas analysis (RGA) data were acquired to monitor sample outgassing. Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) was used to measure deuterium retention in the porous foam. After exposure, the surfaces were characterized with scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The graphitic foam has a thermal conductivity as high as 287 W/mK and is considered as a replacement to more exotic carbon fiber composites such as SepCarb NB31 or isotropic graphites like ATJ that are no longer produced but used in present-day tokamak experiments. Actively cooled monoblocks were made from the foam and underwent extensive materials characterization including infrared response studies at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. We explore the potential of the Helium Ion Microscope (HIM) as a tool for direct-write patterning of graphene and describe the underlying processes of graphene milling with image data processing. Controlled helium ion irradiation of suspended graphene conducted while monitoring the mill in-situ revealed the localized formation of nanopores, their growth, and coalescence. We also explore the effects of defects on the milling dynamics, and show that pre-exposed membranes rupture by cracking and rapid crack propagation at the edges of the growing defects. The mechanism for the rupturing process is described by local defect formation by excessive irradiation of helium ions, dictated by the scanning direction of the beam. These findings enrich fundamental understanding of the graphene milling process with a helium ion beam that, is necessary for high-resolution and high throughput patterning of graphene with nanoscale precision.

Magnetic insulators are important materials for a range of next-generation memory and spintronic applications. Structural constraints in this class of devices generally require a clean heterointerface that allows effective magnetic coupling between the insulating layer and the conducting layer. However, there are relatively few examples of magnetic insulators that can be synthesized with surface qualities that would allow these smooth interfaces and precisely tuned interfacial magnetic exchange coupling, which might be applicable at room temperature. In this work, we demonstrate an example of how the configurational complexity in the magnetic insulator layer can be used to realize these properties. Memristor devices have been extensively studied as one of the most promising technologies for next-generation non-volatile memory. However, for the memristor devices to have a real technological impact, they must be densely packed in a large crossbar array (CBA) exceeding Gigabytes in size. Devising a selector device that is CMOS compatible, 3D stackable, and has a high non-linearity (NL) and great endurance is a crucial enabling ingredient to reach this goal. Tunneling based selectors are very promising in these aspects, but the mediocre NL value limits their applications in large passive crossbar arrays. In this work, we demonstrated a trilayer tunneling selector based on the Ge/Pt/TaN1+x/Ta2O5/TaN1+x/Pd layers that could achieve a NL of 3 × 105, which is the highest NL achieved using a tunnel selector so far. The record-high tunneling NL is partially attributed to the bottom electrode's ultra-smoothness (BE) induced by a Ge/Pt layer. We further demonstrated the feasibility of 1S1R (1-selector 1-resistor) integration by vertically integrating a Pd/Ta2O5/Ru based memristor on top of the proposed selector.

This chapter focuses on the electric field-induced formation of a single nanoscale polarization domain, emphasizing that nucleation, growth, and annihilation of such a domain enables injection of non-equilibrium domain walls. The focus on nanoscale domains is motivated in large part by advances in scanning probe microscopy (SPM), where the ever-increasing drive to improve spatial resolution was met by a natural reduction of the size of one of the electrodes in a ferroelectric capacitor down to nanoscale dimensions. In this case, the process of ferroelectric switching becomes dominated by the nucleation of a single domain of the opposite polarization. Once allowed to equilibrate, the end-result of the single-domain switching is injection of a new domain wall(s) into the original ferroelectric volume. Likewise, reversing the polarization under the probe will in general eliminate the domain wall(s). The nanoscale ferroelectric switching becomes, therefore, an efficient approach to inject and erase DWs on-demand. However, its primary value may be in facilitation of detailed understanding of the DW injection mechanisms as well as investigation of the range of possible DW configurations, that can be injected up to the highest fields achievable in a given material.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) plays a pivotal role in investigating the chemical nature of complex systems that underly our understanding in biology and medicine. Multiple fields of life science such as proteomics, lipidomics and metabolomics benefit from the ability to simultaneously identify molecules and pinpoint their distribution across a sample. However, achieving the necessary submicron spatial resolution to distinguish chemical differences between individual cells and generating intact molecular spectra is still a challenge with any single imaging approach. Here, we developed an approach that combines two MSI techniques, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), one with low spatial resolution but intact molecular spectra and the other with nanometer spatial resolution but fragmented molecular signatures, to predict molecular MSI spectra with submicron spatial resolution. The known relationships between the two MSI channels of information are enforced via a physically constrained machine-learning approach and directly incorporated in the data processing. We demonstrate the robustness of this method by generating intact molecular MALDI-type spectra and chemical maps at ToF-SIMS resolution when imaging mouse brain thin tissue sections. This approach can be readily adopted for other types of bioimaging where physical relationships between methods have to be considered to boost the confidence in the reconstruction product.

Petroleum based polyolefin plastics makeup a large part of the multicomponent/multiphase plastics we use in our daily lives. Multiple plastics are often compounded, laminated or coextruded in these multicomponent systems creating multiple phases and interfaces of varying strengths. Significant opportunity exists in developing strategies for enhancing interfacial properties as well as facilitating disposal of polyolefin plastics by upcycling of polymeric products for reuse. Thus, interfaces and chemically distinct phases in these materials need to be probed structurally and chemically at the relevant length scales. To date, chemical imaging of polymer and polymer blends has been primarily accomplished using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) to directly visualize the distribution of components in a complex material with spatial resolution ranging from 100 nm to 5μm. However, in many cases this resolution falls far short of visualizing interfaces directly. To overcome these limitations recent work has focused on developing a SIMS detection system based on the helium ion microscope (HIM) enabling chemical imaging to ~14 nm. Here, we utilize the HIM-SIMS for quantitative differentiation between the olefin-based polymers of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). We illustrate both quantitative analysis for separating PE and PP using specific mass fragment ratios as well as demonstrate spatially resolved imaging of phase separated domains within PE thin films with ~14 nm chemical and ~2 nm morphological spatial resolutions. Overall, we demonstrate HIM-SIMS as a multimodal chemical technique for imaging and quantification of polyolefin interfaces, that could be more broadly applied to the analysis of multicomponent/multiphase polymeric systems.

Nanotechnology can improve the performance of dental polymers. The objective of this study was to modify the surfaces of nanoparticles with silanes and proteins, characterize nanoparticles’ agglomeration levels and interfaces between nanoparticles and the polymeric matrix. Undoped (n-TiO2), nitrogen-doped (N_TiO2) and nitrogen-fluorine co-doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (NF_TiO2) were synthesized and subjected to surface modification procedures in preparation for Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) characterizations. Experimental adhesives were manually synthesized by incorporating 20% (v/v) of n-TiO2, N_TiO2 or NF_TiO2 (as-synthesized or surface-modified) into OptiBond Solo Plus (OPTB). Specimens (n = 15/group; d = 6.0 mm, t = 0.5 mm) of OPTB and experimental adhesives were characterized using Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS), 2-D ToF-SIMS chemical imaging and SANS. SAXS results indicated that surface-modified nanoparticles displayed higher scattering intensities in a particle-size dependent manner. ToF-SIMS results demonstrated that nanoparticles’ incorporation did not adversely impact the parental polymer. 2-D ToF-SIMS chemical imaging demonstrated the distribution of Ti+ and confirmed nitrogen-doping levels. SANS results confirmed nanoparticles’ functionalization and revealed the interfaces between nanoparticles and the polymer matrix. Metaloxide nanoparticles were successfully fabricated, incorporated and covalently functionalized in a commercial dental adhesive resin, thereby supporting the utilization of nanotechnology in dentistry.

The next generation optical, electronic, biological, and sensing devices as well as platforms will inevitably extend their architecture into the 3rd dimension to enhance functionality. In focused ion beam induced deposition (FIBID), a helium gas field ion source can be used with an organometallic precursor gas to fabricate nanoscale structures in 3D with high-precision and smaller critical dimensions than focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID), traditional liquid metal source FIBID, or other additive manufacturing technology. In this work, we report the effect of beam current, dwell time, and pixel pitch on the resultant segment and angle growth for nanoscale 3D mesh objects. We note subtle beam heating effects, which impact the segment angle and the feature size. Additionally, we investigate the competition of material deposition and sputtering during the 3D FIBID process, with helium ion microscopy experiments and Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show complex 3D mesh structures measuring ~300 nm in the largest dimension, with individual features as small as 16 nm at full width half maximum (FWHM). These assemblies can be completed in minutes, with the underlying fabrication technology compatible with existing lithographic techniques, suggesting a higher-throughput pathway to integrating FIBID with established nanofabrication techniques.

Molybdenum nitride (Mo-N) catalysts have shown promising activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acid. However, the effect of oxygen (O) incorporation (from synthesis, catalysis, or exposure to air) on their activity remains elusive. Here, we use reactive sputtering to synthesize three compositions of thin-film catalysts and use extensive materials characterization to investigate the depth-dependent structure and incorporated O. We show that the as-deposited Mo-N films are highly oxidized both at the surface (>30% O) and in the bulk (3-21% O) and that the ORR performance is strongly correlated with the bulk structure and composition. Activity for 4e- ORR is highest for compositions with the highest N/O and N/Mo ratio. Furthermore, H2O2 production for the films with moderate O content is comparable to or higher than the most H2O2-selective nonprecious metal catalysts in acidic electrolyte, on a moles per mass or surface area of catalyst basis. Density functional theory provides insight into the energetics of O incorporation and vacancy formation, and we hypothesize that activity trends with O/N ratios can be traced to the varying crystallite phases and their interactions with ORR adsorbates. This work demonstrates the prevalence and significance of O in metal nitride electrocatalysts and motivates further investigation into the role of O in other nonprecious metal materials.

The extraordinary optoelectronic performance of hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites has resulted in extensive efforts to unravel their properties. Recently, observations of ferroic twin domains in methylammonium lead triiodide drew significant attention as a possible explanation for the current–voltage hysteretic behaviour in these materials. However, the properties of the twin domains, their local chemistry and the chemical impact on optoelectronic performance remain unclear. Here, using multimodal chemical and functional imaging methods, we unveil the mechanical origin of the twin domain contrast observed with piezoresponse force microscopy in methylammonium lead triiodide. By combining experimental results with first principles simulations we reveal an inherent coupling between ferroelastic twin domains and chemical segregation. These results reveal an interplay of ferroic properties and chemical segregation on the optoelectronic performance of hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites, and offer an exploratory path to improving functional devices. Combined multimodal atomic force microscopy, ion microscopy, ion mass spectrometry and infrared spectrometry experiments explore the chemical properties of ferroelastic twin domains in hybrid lead halide perovskites.

Oxygen and water vapor sensing properties are investigated in metal-oxide-hybrid polymer nanocomposite thin films generated by infiltration synthesis, which incorporates molecular ZnO into the matrix of SU-8 polymer, a common negative-tone photoresist. The hybrid thin films display 20-fold higher gravimetric responses to oxygen and water vapor than those of control ZnO thin films in the dark. An additional 50-500% enhanced responses are detected under UV irradiation. The overall enhanced gravimetric response in the hybrid film is attributed to the ZnO molecules distributed in the polymer matrix, whereas the UV enhancement is explained by the light-induced, reversible generation of hydrophilic fluoroantimonic acid from triarylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate photoacids, which leads to the increased surface potential and adsorption energies for oxygen and water. A gravimetric sensor based on a series of ZnO-infiltrated SU-8 films under UV excitation enables 96% accurate classification of water and oxygen environment with sub 10 mTorr detection limits. The results demonstrate UV-induced fully reversible surface hydrophilicity of ZnO/SU-8 hybrid nanocomposites.

Impurity ions influence mineral growth rates through a variety of kinetic and thermodynamic processes that also affect partitioning of the impurity ion between the solid and solution. Here, the effect of an impurity ion, strontium, on Barite (BaSO4) (001) growth rates was studied using a combination of high-resolution in situ microscopy with ex situ chemical imaging techniques. In the presence of strontium, ⟨120⟩ steps roughened and bifurcated. The overall Barite growth rate also decreased with increasing aqueous strontium-to-barium ratio ([Sr]/[Ba]aq) 5, steps with an apparent [010] orientation were expressed and growth in the [010] step direction led to an increase in the overall growth rate of the surface. The formation of an electric double layer in ionic liquid (IL) can electrostatically induce charge carriers and/or intercalate ions in and out of the lattice which can trigger a large change of the electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of materials and even modify the crystal structure. We present a systematic study of ionic liquid gating of exfoliated 2D molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) devices and correlate the resultant electrical properties to the electrochemical doping via ion migration during the IL biasing process. A nearly 9 orders of magnitude modulation of the MoO3 conductivity is obtained for the two types of ionic liquids that are investigated. In addition, notably rapid on/off switching was realized through a lithium-containing ionic liquid whereas much slower modulation was induced via oxygen extraction/intercalation. Graphene, with unique mechanical and electrical properties, offers diverse application opportunities from beyond Moore’s nano-electronics to water filtration. However, accomplishing these relies on cleaning and processing large areas of supported and suspended graphene sheets. Here, we demonstrate the use of an Ar cluster ion beam as a versatile tool for graphene cleaning, defect engineering, and nanopore fabrication. In-situ and ex-situ characterization techniques were utilized in combination with first principles molecular dynamics, to highlight the differences in processing of the supported and suspended graphene samples. In this work, we monitor interaction of the Ar cluster ion beam with graphene as a function of ion dose with in-situ secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), as well as ex-situ Raman spectroscopy measurements. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) results confirm that the Ar cluster ion beam can form nanopores in the suspended graphene; while the basal plane of graphene remains intact maintaining the lattice structure. Finally, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) image analysis of the irradiated samples allows quantitative tracking of pore areas and their distribution as a function of ion dose. This study highlights the flexibility of the Ar cluster ion beam in 2D material processing, and offers insights into Ar beam interaction with graphene.

Silicate glass is a metastable and durable solid that has application to a number of energy and environmental challenges (e.g., microelectronics, fiber optics, and nuclear waste storage). If allowed to react with water over time silicate glass develops an altered layer at the solid-fluid interface. In this study, we used borosilicate glass (LAWB45) as a model material to develop a robust understanding of altered layer formation (i.e., amorphous hydrated surface layer and crystalline reaction products). Experiments were conducted at high surface area-to-volume ratio (∼200,000 m−1) and 90 °C in the pressurized unsaturated flow (PUF) apparatus for 1.5-years to facilitate the formation of thick altered layers and allow for the effluent solution chemistry to be monitored continuously. A variety of microscopy techniques were used to characterize reacted grains and suggest the average altered layer thickness is 13.2 ± 8.3 μm with the hydrated and clay layer representing 74.8% and 25.2% of the total altered layer, respectively. The estimate of hydrated layer thickness is within the experimental error of the value estimated from the B release rate data (∼10 ± 1 μm/yr) over the 1.5-year duration. PeakForce® quantitative nanomechanical mapping results suggest the hydrated layer has a modulus that ranges between ∼20 and 40 GPa, which is in the range of porous silica that contains from ∼20 to ∼50% porosity, yet significantly lower than dense silica (∼70–80 GPa). Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images confirm the presence of pores and an analysis of a higher resolution image provides a qualitative estimate of ≥22% porosity in the hydrated layer with variations in void volume with increasing distance from the unaltered glass. Chemical composition analyses, based on a combination of time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), scanning electron microscopy with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and STEM-EDS, clearly show that the altered layer is mainly composed of Al, H, Si, and O with the clay layer being enriched in Li, Zn, Fe, and Mg. The amorphous hydrated layer is enriched in Ca, H, and Zr with a minor amount of K. Furthermore, ToF-SIMS results also suggest the B profile is anti-correlated with the H profile in the hydrated layer. Our selected-area electron diffraction results suggest the structure of the hydrated layer closely resembles opal-AG (amorphous gel-like) with an average crystallite size of ∼0.7 nm which is smaller than the critical nucleus for silica nanoparticles (i.e., 1.4–3 nm). These results suggest the hydrated layer is more consistent with a polymeric gel rather than a colloidal gel and is comprised of molecular units ( O Zr units, during the glass corrosion process. The size of individual particles or molecular units is a function of formation conditions (e.g., pH, ionic strength, nano-confinement, solute composition) in the hydrated layer.

Many spectral responses in materials science, physics, and chemistry experiments can be characterized as resulting from the superposition of a number of more basic individual spectra. In this context, unmixing is defined as the problem of determining the individual spectra, given measurements of multiple spectra that are spatially resolved across samples, as well as the determination of the corresponding abundance maps indicating the local weighting of each individual spectrum. Matrix factorization is a popular linear unmixing technique that considers that the mixture model between the individual spectra and the spatial maps is linear. Here, we present a tutorial paper targeted at domain scientists to introduce linear unmixing techniques, to facilitate greater understanding of spectroscopic imaging data. We detail a matrix factorization framework that can incorporate different domain information through various parameters of the matrix factorization method. We demonstrate many domain-specific examples to explain the expressivity of the matrix factorization framework and show how the appropriate use of domain-specific constraints such as non-negativity and sum-to-one abundance result in physically meaningful spectral decompositions that are more readily interpretable. Our aim is not only to explain the off-the-shelf available tools, but to add additional constraints when ready-made algorithms are unavailable for the task. All examples use the scalable open source implementation from https://github.com/ramkikannan/nmflibrary that can run from small laptops to supercomputers, creating a user-wide platform for rapid dissemination and adoption across scientific disciplines.

Atomic force microscopy is widely used for nanoscale characterization of materials by scientists worldwide. The long-held belief of ambient AFM is that the tip is generally chemically inert but can be functionalized with respect to the studied sample. This implies that basic imaging and scanning procedures do not affect surface and bulk chemistry of the studied sample. However, an in-depth study of the confined chemical processes taking place at the tip-surface junction and the associated chemical changes to the material surface have been missing as of now. Here, we used a hybrid system that combines time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry with an atomic force microscopy to investigate the chemical interactions that take place at the tip-surface junction. Investigations showed that even basic contact mode AFM scanning is able to modify the surface of the studied sample. In particular, we found that the silicone oils deposited from the AFM tip into the scanned regions and spread to distances exceeding 15 μm from the tip. These oils were determined to come from standard gel boxes used for the storage of the tips. The explored phenomena are important for interpreting and understanding results of AFM mechanical and electrical studies relying on the state of the tip-surface junction.

Bottlebrush polymers are important for a variety of applications ranging from drug delivery to electronics. The functional flexibility of the branched sidechains has unique assembly properties when compared to linear block polymer systems. However, reports of direct observation of molecular reorganization have been sparse. This information is necessary to enhance the understanding of the structure-property relationships in these systems and yield a rational design approach for novel polymeric materials. In this work, we report direct visualization of bottlebrush molecular organization and the formation of nematic-type ordering in an amorphous polymer bottlebrush system, captured with plasma etching and helium ion microscopy. By observing the unperturbed structure of this material at high resolution and quantifying image features, we were able to qualitatively link experimental results with structures predicted by coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The direct visualization and computation workflow developed in this work can be applied to a broad variety of polymers with different architectures, linking imaging results with other, independent channels of information for better understanding and control of these classes of materials.
