Bio-oils derived from the pyrolysis of lignin-based biomass often contain a variety of oxygenated compounds, which can compromise their usefulness as a fuel. To improve the quality of bio-oil, catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a crucial step that removes oxygen from the oil in the form of water. In this study, we showed that MFI nanosheets are excellent supports for Ru-catalysts. We synthesized highly crystalline MFI nanosheets using a simple hydrothermal seeding procedure; the final material was obtained in 56 h of crystallization. We investigated the activity of Ru supported on different materials. Our findings indicated that Ru supported on hierarchical MFI demonstrated excellent activity in HDO of guaiacol. Our results demonstrated that Ru/ZNS-56 achieved nearly 100% selectivity towards cyclohexane under mild conditions (200 °C, 50 bar H2, 1 h).

The problem of CO2 waste in the atmosphere is a major concern, and methods of CO2 utilization are being currently developed. In the present work, a plasma-catalytic process is applied for CO2 dissociation. A series of MgO and CeO2-containing catalysts were synthesized, and the samples were characterized by: a low-temperature N2 adsorption-desorption analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of CO2, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. It was stated that under dielectric barrier discharge conditions, the catalyst surface, composition, and phase content remain unchanged. The superior catalytic activity of the MgCe-Al sample is attributed to the combination of weak basic sites and oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface.

The annual production of plastic waste is a serious ecological problem as it causes substantial pollution of the environment. Polyethylene terephthalate, a material usually found in disposable plastic bottles, is one of the most popular material used for packaging in the world. In this paper, it is proposed to recycle polyethylene terephthalate waste bottles into benzene-toluene-xylene fraction using a heterogeneous nickel phosphide catalyst formed in situ during the polyethylene terephthalate recycling process. The catalyst obtained was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The catalyst was shown to contain a Ni2P phase. Its activity was studied in a temperature range of 250–400 °C and a H2 pressure range of 5–9 MPa. The highest selectivity for benzene-toluene-xylene fraction was 93% at quantitative conversion.

The recent development of solvent- and polymer-based brain clearing techniques has greatly advanced our ability to visualize the mammalian nervous system in 3D. However, it remains challenging to image the mammalian body en bloc as existing methods can be prohibitively expensive or difficult in practice. Here, we developed HYBRiD (HYdrogel-Based Reinforcement of DISCO), by strategically recombining components of organic- and polymer-based clearing pipelines and achieved superb simplicity, transparency, protein retention, and compatibility with direct fluorescent imaging as well as immunostaining in cleared mammalian bodies. Using parvalbumin- and somatostatin-Cre models, we demonstrated the utility of HYBRiD for whole-body imaging of genetically encoded fluorescent reporters without antibody enhancement of signals in newborn and juvenile mice. Using K18-hACE2 transgenic mice, HYBRiD enabled perfusion-free clearing and visualization of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a whole mouse chest, revealing macroscopic and microscopic features of viral pathology in the same sample. HYBRiD offers a simple, affordable, and universal solution to visualize large heterogeneous body parts or entire animals for basic and translational research.

The development of catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of bio-based feedstocks is an important step towards the production of fuels and chemicals from biomass. This paper describes in situ-generated bulk molybdenum and tungsten oxides in the hydrodeoxygenation of the lignin-derived compound guaiacol. The catalysts obtained were studied using powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transition electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The use of metal carbonyls as precursors was shown to promote the formation of amorphous molybdenum oxide and crystalline tungsten phosphide under hydrodeoxygenation conditions. The catalysts’ activity was investigated under various reaction conditions (temperature, H2 pressure, solvent). MoOx was more active in the partial and full hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol at temperatures of 200–380 °C (5 MPa H2, 6 h). However, cyclohexane, which is an undesirable product, was formed in significant amounts using MoOx (5 MPa H2, 6 h), while WOx was more selective to aromatics. When using dodecane as a solvent (380 °C, 5 MPa H2, 6 h), the benzene-toluene-xylenes fraction was obtained with a 96% yield over the WOx catalyst.

Central neurons express unique repertoires of secreted and transmembrane proteins that define their synaptic connectivity. However, how these molecular programs are regulated remains poorly understood. Our study shows that, in inhibitory GABAergic interneurons in the mouse forebrain, transcription of synaptic organizer molecules is controlled by Nr4a1, a nuclear receptor whose expression is transiently induced by sensory experience and required for normal learning. Nr4a1 exserts opposite effects on local axonal wiring of Parvalbumin- and Somatostatin-positive interneurons that innervate different subcellular domains of their postsynaptic partners. Loss of Nr4a1 activity in these interneurons leads to cell-type-specific transcriptional switches in multiple gene families, including those involved in surface adhesion and repulsion. Our findings reveal a mechanism by which inducible transcription factors dynamically alter the combinatorial synaptic organizing codes for structural plasticity.

A novel method for the synthesis of 2-ethyl-1,3-dioxolane and related short-chain acetals by tandem hydroformylation–acetalization of ethylene is described. The reaction occurs in a biphasic system. The polar phase contains a catalytic system (Rh/TPPTS/H+), which is easy to separate and remains active when reused. Under optimized conditions the hydroformylation TOF reaches 1520 h−1 with an acetal selectivity of 90%. How the pH value, temperature, solvent and structure of the starting polyols influence the efficiency and selectivity of the tandem reaction is shown.

Neuronal activity initiates signaling cascades that culminate in diverse outcomes including structural and functional neuronal plasticity, and metabolic changes. While studies have revealed activity-dependent neuronal cell type-specific transcriptional changes, unbiased quantitative analysis of cell-specific activity-induced dynamics in newly synthesized proteins (NSPs) synthesisin vivohas been complicated by cellular heterogeneity and a relatively low abundance of NSPs within the proteome in the brain. Here we combined targeted expression of mutant MetRS (methionine tRNA synthetase) in genetically defined cortical glutamatergic neurons with tight temporal control of treatment with the noncanonical amino acid, azidonorleucine, to biotinylate NSPs within a short period after pharmacologically induced seizure in male and female mice. By purifying peptides tagged with heavy or light biotin-alkynes and using direct tandem mass spectrometry detection of biotinylated peptides, we quantified activity-induced changes in cortical glutamatergic neuron NSPs. Seizure triggered significant changes in ∼300 NSPs, 33% of which were decreased by seizure. Proteins mediating excitatory and inhibitory synaptic plasticity, including SynGAP1, Pak3, GEPH1, Copine-6, and collybistin, and DNA and chromatin remodeling proteins, including Rad21, Smarca2, and Ddb1, are differentially synthesized in response to activity. Proteins likely to play homeostatic roles in response to activity, such as regulators of proteastasis, intracellular ion control, and cytoskeleton remodeling proteins, are activity induced. Conversely, seizure decreased newly synthetized NCAM, among others, suggesting that seizure induced degradation. Overall, we identified quantitative changes in the activity-induced nascent proteome from genetically defined cortical glutamatergic neurons as a strategy to discover downstream mediators of neuronal plasticity and generate hypotheses regarding their function.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENTActivity-induced neuronal and synaptic plasticity are mediated by changes in the protein landscape, including changes in the activity-induced newly synthesized proteins; however, identifying neuronal cell type-specific nascent proteome dynamics in the intact brain has been technically challenging. We conducted an unbiased proteomic screen from which we identified significant activity-induced changes in ∼300 newly synthesized proteins in genetically defined cortical glutamatergic neurons within 20 h after pharmacologically induced seizure. Bioinformatic analysis of the dynamic nascent proteome indicates that the newly synthesized proteins play diverse roles in excitatory and inhibitory synaptic plasticity, chromatin remodeling, homeostatic mechanisms, and proteasomal and metabolic functions, extending our understanding of the diversity of plasticity mechanisms.

The present review compiles the advances in the dendritic catalysis within the last two decades, in particular concerning heterogeneous dendrimer-based catalysts and their and application in various processes, such as hydrogenation, oxidation, cross-coupling reactions, etc. There are considered three main approaches to the synthesis of immobilized heterogeneous dendrimer-based catalysts: (1) impregnation/adsorption on silica or carbon carriers; (2) dendrimer covalent grafting to various supports (silica, polystyrene, carbon nanotubes, porous aromatic frameworks, etc.), which may be performed in a divergent (as a gradual dendron growth on the support) or convergent way (as a grafting of whole dendrimer to the support); and (3) dendrimer cross-linking, using transition metal ions (resulting in coordination polymer networks) or bifunctional organic linkers, whose size, polarity, and rigidity define the properties of the resulted material. Additionally, magnetically separable dendritic catalysts, which can be synthesized using the three above-mentioned approaches, are also considered. Dendritic catalysts, synthesized in such ways, can be stored as powders and be easily separated from the reaction medium by filtration/centrifugation as traditional heterogeneous catalysts, maintaining efficiency as for homogeneous dendritic catalysts.

A kinetic model for the olefins synthesis from dimethyl ether on zeolite HZSM-5 based catalysts is developed. The model includes the reaction pathways for the synthesis of olefins from oxygenates in the olefinic and aromatic cycles according to modern concepts of the dual-cycle reaction mechanism. The kinetic parameters were determined for the time-stable hydrothermally treated catalysts of various activities Mg-HZSM-5/Al2O3, HZSM-5/Al2O3, and Zr-HZSM-5/Al2O3. The kinetic parameters determination and the solution of the ordinary differential equations system were carried out in the Python software environment. The preliminary estimation of the kinetic parameters was carried out using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, and the parameters were refined using the genetic algorithm. It is shown that reactions activation energies for different catalysts are close, which indicates that the priority of the reaction paths on the studied catalysts is the same. Thus, the topology of the zeolite plays a leading role in the determination of the synthesis routes, rather than the nature of the modifying metal. The developed model fits the experimental data obtained in an isothermal reactor in the range of temperature 320–360 °C, specified contact time 0.1–3.6 h*gcat/gC with a relative error of less than 15%.

Positron emission tomography (PET) allows biomolecular tracking but PET monitoring of brain networks has been hampered by a lack of suitable reporters. Here, we take advantage of bacterial dihydrofolate reductase, ecDHFR, and its unique antagonist, TMP, to facilitate in vivo imaging in the brain. Peripheral administration of radiofluorinated and fluorescent TMP analogs enabled PET and intravital microscopy, respectively, of neuronal ecDHFR expression in mice. This technique can be used to the visualize neuronal circuit activity elicited by chemogenetic manipulation in the mouse hippocampus. Notably, ecDHFR‐PET allows mapping of neuronal projections in non‐human primate brains, demonstrating the applicability of ecDHFR‐based tracking technologies for network monitoring. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of TMP analogs for PET studies of turnover and self‐assembly of proteins tagged with ecDHFR mutants. These results establish opportunities for a broad spectrum of previously unattainable PET analyses of mammalian brain circuits at the molecular level., Application of bacterial dihydrofolate reductase ecDHFR and its unique antagonist TMP achieves a broad spectrum of previously unattainable in vivo PET analyses of mammalian brain circuits at the molecular level.

In this study, an approach for the preparation of heterogeneous acid catalysts based on asphaltenes isolated from vacuum residue is proposed. Varying the conditions for the sulfonation of asphaltenes made it possible to obtain materials with an acid value of 1.16 to 2.76 meq g–1 and a total sulfur content of 6.4 to 12.3 wt%. The samples obtained were characterized by acid-base titration, nitrogen adsorption, sulfur elemental analysis and transmission electron microscopy techniques, and were studied as potential acid catalysts in the ketalization reaction between glycerol and acetone. Sulfonated asphaltenes (SA) were characterized by a homogeneous distribution of sulfonic groups over the granule surface and an almost complete absence of a porous structure. The ketalization reaction in the presence of SA proceeded without intradiffusion restrictions, as a result of which, their activity was higher than for known heterogeneous catalysts. The most active SA sample (total acid value, 1.16 meq g–1) had an apparent activation energy of 18.0 kJ mol–1, which was lower than the value obtained for the zeolite BEA-40 (29–53 kJ mol–1) and the Amberlyst 36 resin (27 kJ mol–1), and was close to the value for the homogeneous p-TSA catalyst (14.5 kJ mol–1). The SA heterogeneous catalysts did not show any acid leaching and had no loss of activity after five catalytic cycles, with the total turnover number TON = 7247.

The formation of new memories requires transcription. However, the mechanisms that limit signaling of relevant gene programs in space and time for precision of information coding remain poorly understood. We found that, during learning, the cellular patterns of expression of early response genes (ERGs) are regulated by class IIa HDACs 4 and 5, transcriptional repressors that transiently enter neuronal nuclei from cytoplasm after sensory input. Mice lacking these repressors in the forebrain have abnormally broad experience-dependent expression of ERGs, altered synaptic architecture and function, elevated anxiety, and severely impaired memory. By acutely manipulating the nuclear activity of class IIa HDACs in behaving animals using a chemical-genetic technique, we further demonstrate that rapid induction of transcriptional programs is critical for memory acquisition but these programs may become dispensable when a stable memory is formed. Synaptotagmin-11 (Syt11) is a Synaptotagmin isoform that lacks an apparent ability to bind calcium, phospholipids, or SNARE proteins. While human genetic studies have linked mutations in the Syt11 gene to schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease, the localization or physiological role of Syt11 remain unclear. We found that in neurons, Syt11 resides on abundant vesicles that differ from synaptic vesicles and resemble trafficking endosomes. These vesicles recycle via the plasma membrane in an activity-dependent manner, but their exocytosis is slow and desynchronized. Constitutive knockout mice lacking Syt11 died shortly after birth, suggesting Syt11-mediated membrane transport is required for survival. In contrast, selective ablation of Syt11 in excitatory forebrain neurons using a conditional knockout did not affect life span but impaired synaptic plasticity and memory. Syt11-deficient neurons displayed normal secretion of fast neurotransmitters and peptides but exhibited a reduction of long-term synaptic potentiation. Hence, Syt11 is an essential component of a neuronal vesicular trafficking pathway that differs from the well-characterized synaptic vesicle trafficking pathway but is also essential for life.

Store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) is a mechanism for calcium influx through the plasma membrane in response to release of free calcium from the endoplasmic reticulum. Two recent studies revealed how SOCE regulates the exocytosis of neurotransmitter vesicles at central synapses.

SUMMARY Chemical synapses of shared cellular origins have remarkably heterogeneous structures, but how this diversity is generated is unclear. Here, we use three-dimensional (3D) electron microscopy and artificial intelligence algorithms for image processing to reconstruct functional excitatory microcircuits in the mouse hippocampus and microcircuits in which neurotransmitter signaling is permanently suppressed with genetic tools throughout the lifespan. These nanoscale analyses reveal that experience is dispensable for morphogenesis of synapses with different geometric shapes and contents of membrane organelles and that arrangement of morphologically distinct connections in local networks is stochastic. Moreover, loss of activity increases the variability in sizes of opposed pre- and postsynaptic structures without disrupting their alignments, suggesting that inherently variable weights of naive connections become progressively matched with repetitive use. These results demonstrate that mechanisms for the structural diversity of neuronal synapses are intrinsic and provide insights into how circuits essential for memory storage assemble and integrate information., Graphical abstract, In brief Zhu et al. show that development of structurally diverse pools of glutamatergic synapses in the mouse brain does not require synaptic activity. They also demonstrate that structurally diverse synapses are arranged in local connectomes in a stochastic manner and that experience reduces the variability of synaptic weights.

The current work describes an attempt to synthesize hybrid materials combining porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) and dendrimers and use them to obtain novel highly active and selective palladium catalysts. PAFs are carbon porous materials with rigid aromatic structure and high stability, and the dendrimers are macromolecules which can effectively stabilize metal nanoparticles and tune their activity in catalytic reactions. Two porous aromatic frameworks, PAF-20 and PAF-30, are modified step-by-step with diethanolamine and hydroxyl groups at the ends of which are replaced by new diethanolamine molecules. Then, palladium nanoparticles are applied to the synthesized materials. Properties of the obtained materials and catalysts are investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, low temperature N2 adsorption and elemental analysis. The resulting catalysts are successfully applied as an efficient and recyclable catalyst for selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes at very high (up to 90,000) substrate/Pd ratios.

We investigated the influence of functionalization strategy (post- or pre-) on the structure of amino-modified porous aromatic frameworks (PAF-NH2). Different techniques, such as low-temperature N2 adsorption-desorption, IR spectroscopy and solid-state CP-MAS 13C NMR spectroscopy, were used to characterize the synthesized materials. Palladium catalysts were prepared based on obtained PAF-NH2 supports, characterized by TEM, XPS and elemental analysis and studied in the semihydrogenation of C8-acetylenes and dienes. The results show that the modification approach influences structure of PAF and, therefore, the morphology and distribution of palladium nanoparticles. Post-modified catalysts proved to be more active, while pre-modified ones exhibited enhanced selectivity towards desired olefins and improved stability.

The article represents a review of the book by N.U. Zamyatina and A.N. Pilyasov “The Russian Arctic: towards new understanding of the development processes” and provides the reader with a new scientific publication on the Arctic topic. The book is very diverse in its subject matter. It focuses on the location and economy of the Arctic towns, the cycles of the development of the Arctic territories, the specifics and prospects of the Arctic business, the regularities of human capital dynamics and the opportunities for technological innovation in the Russian Arctic. The book contains a large amount of statistical data and it is well-illustrated with diagrams and maps. The book by N.U. Zamyatina and A.N. Pilyasov will be of interest not only to specialists in the economic geography, but also to researchers of social sciences and humanities.

The article considers the methodology problems of studying the population social well-being in relation to its hierarchies of values and attitudes. Social well-being is interpreted as an integral indicator with two aspects. First, social well-being represents the objective parameters of the quality of life related to the state of the socio-economic system of a society, the level of infrastructure development, social security and the quantity of political rights. Secondly, an evaluation of subjective well-being, including the overall satisfaction with life and social optimism. The article gives a general description of the main international and Russian methods for measuring the quality of life. The necessity of modification of existing methods is shown. It's proposed to be implemented by incorporating indicators that represent the specifics of living conditions in the Arctic, along with the preservation of universal tools for measuring social well-being. The characteristic of the international measurement methods of quality of life in the Arctic is given as an example of such modification. The article offers the idea that the study of social well-being should be done out in the context of the value orientation studies, because the latter is an important part of the individuals' interpretation of socio-economic, political and legal situation. It's proposed to use the additional variables, affecting the state of social well-being, such as personal motivational and value characteristics (dominant terminal and instrumental values) and culturally determinated value-behavioral imperatives common in a society.

Non-phosphorous rhodium-containing catalysts for direct conversion of olefins to alcohols via tandem hydroformylation/hydrogenation have been designed and synthesized. Interaction between Rh(acac)(CO)2 and tertiary amino groups on the surface of mesoporous hybrid organic-inorganic supports yielded materials which were successfully used in the tandem process. Data obtained for a selected catalyst KN demonstrate that rhodium is in the Rh+1 state highly dispersed on the surface and is bonded with nitrogen atoms both before and after use. Evaluation of the catalytic performance shows high activity (hydroformylation TOF 312 h−1), chemoselectivity and stable hydroformylation yield at least in the first 5 cycles with a decrease in alcohol selectivity. The influence of temperature, reaction time, total pressure, and molar CO/H2 ratio of syngas on oxygenate yields is described. Type of the hydroformylation active sites and possible pathways for the observed decrease in hydrogenation are discussed.

Dehydrogenation processes play an important role in the petrochemical industry. High selectivity towards olefins is usually hindered by numerous side reactions in a conventional cracking/pyrolysis technology. Herein, we show recent studies devoted to selective ethylene production via oxidative and non-oxidative reactions. This review summarizes the progress that has been achieved with ethane conversion in terms of the process effectivity. Briefly, steam cracking, catalytic dehydrogenation, oxidative dehydrogenation (with CO2/O2), membrane technology, and chemical looping are reviewed.

Here we present a review of a two volume scientific work published in April 2017 by the Paulsen Publishing House — the “Arctic Encyclopedia”. The authors — 100 people from different fields of science — enabled the publisher to get a detailed coverage of geography, flora and fauna, climate, indigenous peoples of the Arctic, as well as international cooperation, social, economic and cultural development of the Arctic areas. This work is a fundamental one and deserves close attention from every person interested in the Arctic issues.

The reaction of dimethyl ether to olefin over HZSM-5/Al2O3 catalysts modified by Zr and Mg and stabilized by hydrothermal treatment has been studied. Regardless of the introduction method and the nature of the metal, the dependence of the key products selectivity on X(DME) over hydrothermally treated steady-state catalysts does not change, and the experimental points are described by the same curves. Metal introduction and the corresponding changes in the acid sites distribution do not change the ratio of main reaction rates, only the absolute values of the formation rate of the products are changed. Zr doping leads to the greatest activity in the DME conversion due to an equable decrease in the total acidity of the sample. On the other hand, the Mg-modified sample has a higher amount of weak acid sites, which reduces activity. At low DME conversion, methanol is one of the primary reaction products which formed from DME simultaneously with propylene in alkene cycle. At high DME conversion, the methanol acts as a main reagent which leads to ethylene formation in the arene cycle. Based on the results, the role of the metal in the reaction chemistry is considered and the mechanism of product formation from DME over steady-state catalyst is proposed, which describes both the participation of DME and the methanol produced.

The stabilization or consolidation of long-term memories lasting more than a few hours requires new gene expression. While neural activity has been shown to induce expression of a variety of genes within several hours of learning, whether this leads to persistent changes in gene expression that lasts for days or weeks remains unclear. We developed a novel mouse line which expresses Cre recombinase in an inducible manner and used it to examine gene expression in learning-activated neurons of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) one month following contextual fear conditioning. The mPFC is not required for the initial retrieval of contextual memory but becomes necessary after one month, suggesting a slowly developing plasticity. We found a variety of changes in gene expression in learning-activated neural ensembles that were specific to the mPFC. One group of transcriptional changes observed was the coordinated upregulation of presynaptic proteins suggesting a potential learning-induced elaboration of presynaptic terminals. We tested this idea by labeling the projections of mPFC neurons active during initial learning and found an increase in the number of terminals in neurons projecting to the basolateral amygdala at 1 month following training. These results suggest a presynaptic growth mechanism that could account for the enhanced role of the mPFC in fear memory retrieval at long time points after learning.

Quartz is one of the major constitutive minerals of sedimentary rocks and its abundance in shales is thought to have a significant control on their mechanical properties as well as on the efficiency of hydraulic fracturing stimulation. While mineralogy based estimations of the strength and deformation behaviour (brittle or ductile) of shales are commonly used in practical applications, it should be noted that they do not account for parameters like phase distribution and cementation that also affect mechanical and elastic properties. Quartz in shales and can occur in at least two forms: i) as a detrital component and ii) as an authigenic mineral precipitated during diagenesis. In this study, we present high resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-cathodo-luminescence (CL) imaging of authigenic quartz combined with Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (EPMA) trace-element quantification at sub-micron spatial resolution in samples from the Marcellus Shale of NE Pennsylvania, USA. For the first time the geochemistry of authigenic quartz in shales is presented and discussed in relation to the silica source and conditions of precipitation.

The nickel&ndash, tungsten sulfide catalysts for the hydroconversion of hydrocarbons were prepared from oil-soluble nickel and tungsten precursor compounds in situ with the use of silica, alumina, titania, zeolite Y, and amorphous aluminosilicate as additives in a vacuum gas oil medium. It was found that the catalytic activity in hydrocracking depends on the concentration of acid sites in the resulting catalyst. With the use of oxide additives, the dispersion and the promoter ratio of the in situ formed sulfide particles increased in the order SiO2&ndash, Al2O3&ndash, TiO2. It was noted that the promoter ratio of sulfide particles obtained with the use of aluminosilicate additives depended on their porous structure peculiarities. The use of titanium dioxide as a catalytic system component made it possible to reach high activity in hydrocracking, hydrodearomatization, and hydrodesulfurization, which was comparable to that of a system based on zeolite Y, a highly acidic component.

The hydroprocessing of substituted naphthalenes and light cycle oil (LCO) over bimetallic Ni-W-S and Ni-Mo-S catalysts that were obtained by decomposition of [N(n-Bu)4]2[Ni(MeS4)2] (Me = W, Mo) complexes in situ in the pores of mesoporous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) during the reaction, was studied. The promotion of acid-catalyzed processes by PAF-AlCl3, synthesized by impregnation of a PAF with AlCl3 from its toluene solution, was investigated. It has been found that Ni-W-S catalytic systems were more active in the hydrodearomatization reactions, while Ni-Mo-S catalytic systems were more active in hydrodesulfurization and hydrocracking reactions. The introduction of sulfur into the reaction medium enhanced the activity of the catalysts and the presence of PAF-AlCl3 led to an acceleration of the hydrocracking processes.

Bimetallic MnCo catalyst, supported on the mesoporous hierarchical MCM-41/halloysite nanotube composite, was synthesized for the first time and proved its efficacy in the selective oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid under conditions of the AMOCO process. Quantitative yields of terephthalic acid were achieved within 3 h at 200&ndash, 250 &deg, C, 20 atm. of O2 and at a substrate to the Mn + Co ratio of 4&ndash, 4.5 times higher than for traditional homogeneous system. The influence of temperature, oxygen, pressure and KBr addition on the catalyst activity was investigated, and the mechanism for the oxidation of p-toluic acid to terephthalic acid, excluding undesirable 4-carboxybenzaldehyde, was proposed.

Anchoring Rh complexes to the surface of a silica polyamine composite, which has a poly(allylamine) covalently grafted to the surface of amorphous silica gel, yielded a material that proved to be an effective and novel heterogeneous catalyst for hydroformylation of unsaturated compounds. Surface amino groups of the material were modified with phosphines by covalent and ionic coupling. The modified materials were then treated with Rh(acac)(CO)2, giving the catalysts K-1 and K-2. Catalysts were characterized by solid-state NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, XPS, TEM, and elemental analysis. The activity and stability of K-1 and K-2 were then studied for the hydroformylation of selected unsaturated compounds. Hydroformylation of terminal double bonds occurred selectively in the presence of internal double bonds. Characterization of the catalysts and the problems encountered with the supported catalysts are discussed. Catalyst K-1 is reusable and can be applied to the hydroformylation of linear olefins, styrene, 4-vinylcyclohexene, and dienes, as well as representative terpenes and other unsaturated hydrocarbons in a batch reactor.

Telomeres have been studied extensively in peripheral tissues, but their relevance in the nervous system remains poorly understood. Here, we examine the roles of telomeres at distinct stages of murine brain development by using lineage-specific genetic ablation of TRF2, an essential component of the shelterin complex that protects chromosome ends from the DNA damage response machinery. We found that functional telomeres are required for embryonic and adult neurogenesis, but their uncapping has surprisingly no detectable consequences on terminally differentiated neurons. Conditional knockout of TRF2 in post-mitotic immature neurons had virtually no detectable effect on circuit assembly, neuronal gene expression, and the behavior of adult animals despite triggering massive end-to-end chromosome fusions across the brain. These results suggest that telomeres are dispensable in terminally differentiated neurons and provide mechanistic insight into cognitive abnormalities associated with aberrant telomere length in humans.

SummaryThe structural organization of neural circuits is strongly influenced by experience, but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. We found that, in the developing dentate gyrus (DG), excitatory drive promotes the somatic innervation of principal granule cells (GCs) by parvalbumin (PV)-positive basket cells. In contrast, presynaptic differentiation of GCs and interneuron subtypes that inhibit GC dendrites is largely resistant to loss of glutamatergic neurotransmission. The networks of PV basket cells in the DG are regulated by vesicular release from projection entorhinal cortical neurons and, at least in part, by NMDA receptors in interneurons. Finally, we present evidence that glutamatergic inputs and NMDA receptors regulate these networks through a presynaptic mechanism that appears to control the branching of interneuron axons. Our results provide insights into how cortical activity tunes the inhibition in a subcortical circuit and reveal new principles of interneuron plasticity.
