Abstract

An interlaboratory comparison for European radon calibration facilities was conducted to evaluate the establishment of a harmonized quality level for the activity concentration of radon in air and to demonstrate the performance of the facilities when calibrating measurement instruments for radon. Fifteen calibration facilities from 13 different European countries participated. They represented different levels in the metrological hierarchy: national metrology institutes and designated institutes, national authorities for radiation protection and participants from universities. The interlaboratory comparison was conducted by the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) and took place from 2018 to 2020. Participants were requested to measure radon in atmospheres of their own facilities according to their own procedures and requirements for metrological traceability. A measurement device with suitable properties was used to determine the comparison values. The results of the comparison showed that the radon activity concentrations that were determined by European calibration facilities complying with metrological traceability requirements were consistent with each other and had common mean values. The deviations from these values were normally distributed. The range of variation of the common mean value was a measure of the degree of agreement between the participants. For exposures above 1000 Bq/m3, the variation was about 4% for a level of confidence of approximately 95% (k=2). 89Zr is a beta plus and electron capture decaying radionuclide. This paper presents: (1) Absolute standardization by the 4πβ(PC)-γ coincidence method: a new equivalent decay scheme, the mathematical formalism applied to it and the choice of the optimal measurement conditions. (2) Measurements by HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry, to determine the possible impurities, to measure the activity and the relative intensities of the emitted gamma rays. (3) Calibration of the CENTRONIC IG12/20A ionization chamber, by two methods: direct measurement using the absolutely standardized solution and linear least square modelling, as well as their comparison. Abstract

This paper presents the work performed in IFIN-HH, Radionuclide Metrology Laboratory, for the standardization of a (Ge+Ga) solution, within our participation in the key-comparison codified as CCRI(II)-K2.Ge-68, organised by the CIPM-CCRI(II). Four methods were used: (i) the 4πβ(PC)-γ coincidence method, efficiency extrapolation variant, (ii) the liquid scintillation counting in the variant of triple to double coincidence ratio, (iii) the gamma-ray spectrometry and (iv) the well-type ionisation chamber measurement. The final result was calculated as 'power moderate weighted mean' of all results. The results obtained in all methods are presented as relative figures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The paper presents the following problems which were solved during the deployment of the project: ·Elaboration of the radon standard concept: (i) design of the radon system: the radon generator source, the circuit for circulation, transfer, recovery ; (ii) choice of the standardization method; (iii) conception of an original traceability chain; (iv) definition of the basic requirements according to the international and national Norms regarding the monitoring and reporting of the radon concentration. ·Realization of the radon circuits, in two variants: (i) the preliminary one, from glass, used to demonstrate the feasibility of the system; (ii) the final, metallic variant, provided with the necessary gauges for the control of pressure level and of radon circulation and recovery. ·Elaboration of the method for the absolute standardization of the equilibrium radon decay chain, by liquid scintillation counting (LSC). ·Realization of various types of recipients, with radon as gas and dissolved/adsorbed in liquid scintillator, and their measurement by HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry, ionisation chamber and LSC. Elaboration of a computing model for radon circulation in various matrices: soil, water and active charcoal. ·Establishment of the traceability chain, from the primary standard to the calibrated secondary equipments and preparation of radon recipients with the radon activity certified. ·Study of the LS efficiency influence on the radon measurement. Abstract: The 64Cu and 68Ga half-lives and γ-ray intensities were measured at IFIN-HH. The determination of absolute photon emission intensities was based on absolute activity standardizations carried out in this laboratory using the 4πPC-γ coincidence method. The half-lives were measured with a well-type ionization chamber. The photon emission intensities (relative and absolute values) were measured with a calibrated high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer.
