The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 jeopardizes the country's independence and its chances for Western-style development. However, the heroic attitude of the Ukrainian people, combined with a solidifying national identity, makes the domestic foundations for a western turn stronger than ever. After the invasion, building strong foundations of liberal democracy will be a top priority. In addition to alleviating immediate problems, the country must also address its post-communist legacy and address the constraints of patronalism.The authors of this edited volume, leading Ukrainian scholars supplemented by colleagues from Hungary, examine the chances of an anti-patronal transformation after the war. The book provides an overview of the development of Ukraine's political-economic system: color revolutions in 2004 and 2014 brought democratic transformation, but no change in the patronage system The result was patronal regime cycles instead of the emergence of a Western-type liberal democracy in the country. Building on the conceptual framework of the editors' The Anatomy of Post-Communist Regimes (CEU Press, 2020), the 12 chapters examine the impact of the war on patronal democracy, the relational economy, clientelist society, and the international environment in which Ukraine operates.

Edited by Martin Biddle with a catalogue of the known coins of the mint by Yvonne Harvey, this volume records and illustrates the minting of silver pennies in Winchester between the reigns of Alfred the Great and Henry III, a period of three and a half centuries. At the Mint, which was situated in the area of the High Street to the east of where the city’s cross now stands, at least 24 million silver pennies (possibly as many as 50 million) were struck. Five and a half thousand survive in museums and collections all over the world. These have been sought out and photographed (some 3200 coins in 6400 images detailing both sides), and minutely catalogued by Yvonne Harvey for this volume. During the period from late in the reign of Alfred to the time of Henry III, dies for striking the coins were produced centrally under royal authority in the most sophisticated system of monetary control at the time in the western world. In this first account of a major English mint to have been made in forty years, a team of leading authorities have studied and analysed the use the Winchester moneyers made of the dies, and together with the size, weight, and the surviving number of coins from each pair of dies, have produced a detailed account of the varying fortunes of the mint over this period. Their results are critical for the economic history of England and the changing status of Winchester over this long period, and provide the richest available source for the history of the name of the city and the personal names of its citizens in the later Anglo-Saxon period.

Paradise Blues is an unconventional history of the United States of America, an unusual travel guide that follows and renders visible the country’s paths of nature, history and civilisation. And he shows us that, more powerfully than abstract ideas, governmental edicts or technological forces, stories reveal the infinite discoveries to be made in humans’ relationship to nature – in beautiful landscapes where danger lurks as well as in visions and behaviours that change the world and ecosystems. Above all, stories demonstrate that where we come from and where we are going are intimately connected and therefore nothing has to remain as it is. The stories told in Paradise Blues demonstrate that vulnerabilities and pressures are almost always political constructions and, for that reason, it must be possible to deconstruct them.

The contents of the hoard include a highly significant collection of over 200 silver pennies, mostly of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, and Ceolwulf II, king of Mercia, transforming our understanding of the coinage in this period, and 23 silver and gold pieces of contemporary metalwork much of which was derived from Scandinavia. Presenting the complete publication of the objects and coins in the Watlington Hoard - including an important re-assessment of the coinage of the late 870s - the authors discuss its wider implications for our understanding of hoarding in late 9th-century southern Britain, interactions between the kingdoms of Wessex and Mercia, and the movements of the Viking Great Army after the Battle of Edington in 878. The COVID-19 shock had a strong negative effect on aggregate economic performance, with the average firm taking a hit on sales revenues and financial performance. However, the effects varied from firm to firm. Were already-struggling firms hit hardest, threatening their very survival? Or did the COVID-19 shock disproportionately deter tomorrow’s superstars at the upper end of the distribution, thus sacrificing future growth potential? This paper investigates where the COVID-19 shock hit the firm growth distribution, using graphical techniques and quantile regressions to analyse the full distribution of firm growth rates. We investigate how the COVID-19 shock relates to growth outcomes for four dependent variables: growth of sales, value added, employment, and labour productivity. Our results confirm that COVID-19 policy support reached its intended recipients.

The Planetary Humanism of European Women’s Science Fiction argues that utopian science fiction written by European women has, since the seventeenth century, played an important role in exploring the racial and gender possibilities of the outer limits of the humanist imagination. This book focuses on six works of science fiction from the UK, France, Spain, and Italy: Jennifer Marie Brissett’s Elysium; Nicoletta Vallorani’s Sulla Sabbia di Sur and Il Cuore Finto di DR; Aliette de Bodard’s Xuya Universe series; Elia Barcelo’s Consecuencias Naturales; and Historias del Crazy Bar, a collection of stories by Lola Robles and Maria Concepcion Regueiro. It sets these in conversation with key gender and critical race scholars: Judith Butler, Rosi Braidotti, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Paul Gilroy, and Jack Halberstam. It asserts that a key concern for feminism, anti- racism, and science fiction now is to seek inventive ways of returning to the question of the human in the context of increasing racial and gender divisions. Between Roman Culture and Local Tradition presents a detailed analysis of the Roman provincial coinage of Bithynia and Pontus during the reign of Trajan (98-117), when 14 cities struck coins. The book characterises individual mints, the rhythm of monetary production, iconography and legends, and considers the attribution and dating of individual issues. Context is provided by studies on other categories of artefacts discovered in the local area, including epigraphic and material ones, such as fine art, sculptures and architectural remains. The extent of circulation is also analysed, as well as the coinage of the border centres of neighbouring provinces such as Thrace, Asia and Galatia-Cappadocia. Reference is made to historical sources, principally the correspondence of Pliny the Younger with the emperor, which can help to show the realities of life for the inhabitants of individual centres, including ongoing construction projects or local problems. Overall the book aims to reconstruct the coinage policy of individual cities and culture and religion in various centres during this period, as well as contacts and relationships among the local communities. In turn, the studies of individual cities allow for the creation of a general picture of coinage in the province.

Ihren langen Weg quer durch den europäischen Kontinent säumen Erzählungen, Geschichten und Bilder, die in den jeweiligen Ländern und Regionen oft in unterschiedlichen Versionen und Kontexten zirkulieren. Die Autorinnen und Autoren untersuchen anhand zahlreicher Beispiele aus Literatur, Film und Fotografie, wie diese Geschichten im diskursiven Wechselspiel zwischen Sprachen, Nationen, Medien und Geschichte geformt und ausbuchstabiert wurden. Die Donau, so zeigt diese Publikation, ist nicht nur im Bild des natürlich und unaufhörlich dahinfließenden Stromes zu fassen, sondern mindestens ebenso in Bildern von Grenzen, Brüchen und Einschnitten. An die Seite des Kontinuums tritt die Montage und die Bricolage. Traumatische Ereignisse wie Kriege, politische Umwälzungen und Zäsuren haben dazu geführt, dass die kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Narrative des Flusses immer wieder in Stücke zerlegt und neu zusammengesetzt wurden.

“Echoing Events” questions the perpetuation, actualization, and canonization of national narratives in English and Dutch history textbooks, wide-reaching media that tendentially inspire a sense of meaning, memory, and thus also identity. The longitudinal study begins in the 1920s, when the League of Nations launched several initiatives to reduce strong nationalistic visions in textbooks, and ends in the new millennium with the revival of national narratives in both countries. The analysis shows how and why textbook authors have narrated different histories – which vary in terms of context, epoch, and place – as ‘echoing events’ by using recurring plots and the same combinations of historical analogies. This innovative and original study thus investigates from a new angle the resistance of national narratives to change.

Neben einem umfassenden Katalog mit genauen Beschreibungen und einer Vielzahl von Abbildungen beinhaltet das neue Buch einleitende Kapitel zu Planungsabläufen und handwerklichen Prozessen, zur Zusammenarbeit von Tischlern mit anderen Gewerken und zur Einbindung des sakralen Mobiliars in die räumliche Umgebung. Da die Recherche nicht nur Fragen der Stilkritik nachgeht, sondern auch Gebiete der Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte streift, reicht sie über eine rein deskriptive Analyse des überlieferten Bestandes weit hinaus. Weder Kapitalismus noch Demokratie galten in den 1920er und 1930er Jahren als Pfeiler der Stabilität. Das begann sich erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zu ändern. Dargestellt wird dieser Wandel in der Regel als Triumph von kapitalistischer Konsumgesellschaft und wohlfahrtsstaatlich gesicherter Demokratie über Faschismus und Kommunismus. 70 Jahre Bundesrepublik bieten Anlass, diese Sicht neu zu bewerten. Hermann Bücher zum Beispiel, Vorstandsmitglied des Reichsverbands der Deutschen Industrie, hielt Politiker für ökonomisch inkompetent und Parlamente für ungeeignet, um die wirtschaftlichen Grundlagen moderner Gesellschaften zu gestalten. Dennoch avancierte er nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zu einem wichtigen Berater der ersten bundesdeutschen Regierung unter Konrad Adenauer. Wie kam es dazu, dass Akteure wie Hermann Bücher in Deutschland, genauso wie andere in Frankreich, demokratische Regierungen als Partner des Kapitalismus akzeptierten? ;Schlüssel dieser Entwicklung waren Vertreter wirtschaftlicher Interessen, die als Unterhändler zwischen Unternehmen und Staat vermittelten. Sie traten für eine Transformation des wirtschaftsliberalen Individualismus zu einem koordinierten Kapitalismus ein. Philipp Müller zeigt, dass die wirtschaftlichen Eliten durch die Regimewechsel nicht nachhaltig berührt wurden und in der Nachkriegszeit zu starkem Einfluss auf die wirtschaftliche und politische Ordnung gelangten. Damit stieg auch ihre Bereitschaft zur Akzeptanz der Demokratie.
