Background: Potatoes are regarded very prone to chloride toxicity, and the application of sulfate‐based potassium fertilizers is therefore recommended. However, in several studies, no significant differences between KCl and K2SO4 on tuber yield and starch concentration were found. In addition, plant shoots occasionally showed more pronounced stress symptoms after sulfate compared to chloride treatment. Aims: This study aimed to identify reasons for enhanced stress occurrence of potato plants after K2SO4 instead of KCl fertilization. Methods: We conducted a pot experiment with the potato cultivar Marabel, which showed to be chloride‐resistant in our previous study, and applied 1 g K or 2 g K either as K2SO4 or KCl. Plant shoots were analyzed for nutrients, sugars, and antioxidative capacity shortly before start of flowering (intermediate harvest), and tubers were harvested at physiological maturity and their starch concentration and yield were determined. Results: With sulfate‐based K fertilization, the start of flowering and ripening as well as the achievement of physiological maturity occurred earlier than with KCl supply. However, the accelerated development of K2SO4‐treated plants did not affect shoot fresh and dry mass shortly before flowering and at maturity, showing similar values as in the KCl treatment. With 2 g K as K2SO4, the potato plants produced much larger and less than half the number of tubers compared to 2 g K as KCl, resulting in a significantly reduced tuber fresh mass. Tuber starch concentration as well as starch yield per plant were not significantly affected by the kind of K fertilization. In plant shoots shortly before flowering, calcium and magnesium concentrations were significantly decreased, combined with a significant increase in antioxidative capacity after application of 2 g K as K2SO4 compared to KCl. Sugar concentrations and contents in potato shoots at flowering were mostly unaffected by the kind of K fertilizer. Conclusions: Stronger toxicity symptoms and growth inhibition after sulfate compared to chloride application, combined with a significant increase in antioxidative capacity, provide evidence for sulfate‐induced oxidative stress. Dietary supplementation with synthetic β‐carotene was investigated in this study to assess its impact on gonad development, antioxidant status, color parameters, and carotenoid composition in adult female swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus). Four diets, designated as Diet 1 to 4, were formulated to contain 3.07, 53.78, 103.23, and 205.22 mg/kg dry diets of synthetic β‐carotene. The findings revealed the following: (1) No significant differences in body weights or feed utilization were observed, indicating that β‐carotene did not significantly enhance the growth of adult P. trituberculatus. (2) The inclusion of 50–100 mg/kg β‐carotene in the diets led to improvements in antioxidant capacity indicators (T‐AOC, MDA) and immune‐related parameters (AKP, ACP) in both hepatopancreas and hemolymph. (3) Notably, the redness of ovaries and hepatopancreas increased significantly with higher dietary β‐carotene supplementation for color enhancement. In conclusion, incorporating β‐carotene into the diet enhanced the antioxidative capability, nonspecific immunity, and tissue carotenoid contents in adult female P. trituberculatus, and the optimal level of dietary synthetic β‐carotene supplementation for adult female P. trituberculatus was suggested to be around 100 mg/kg. The aim of this study was to evaluate antioxidative features using 2,2-diphenyl-1-pycrylhydrazyl free radical (DPPH•) scavenging method, bovine serum albumin (BSA)-binding properties with usage of spectrofluorimetric method, proliferative and cyto/genotoxic status by use of chromosome aberration test, and antimicrobial potential using broth microdilution method, followed by resazurin assay of benzyl-, isopropyl-, isobutyl and phenylparaben in vitro. Our results showed that all parabens had significant antiradical scavenger activity compared to p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) precursor. Higher mitotic index for benzyl-, isopropyl and isobutylparaben (250 µg/mL) in comparison with control was demonstrated. An increase in the frequency of acentric fragments in lymphocytes treated with benzylparaben and isopropylparaben (125 and 250 µg/mL), and isobutylparaben (250 µg/mL) was observed. Isobutylparaben (250 µg/mL) induced higher number of dicentric chromosomes. An increased number of minute fragments in lymphocytes exposed to benzylparaben (125 and 250 µg/mL) was found. A significant difference in the frequency of chromosome pulverization, between phenylparaben (250 µg/mL) and control, was detected. Benzylparaben (250 µg/mL) and phenylparaben (62.5 µg/mL) caused an increase in the number of apoptotic cells, while isopropylparaben (62.5, 125 and 250 µg/mL) and isobutylparaben (62.5 and 125 µg/mL) induced higher frequency of necrosis. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of tested parabens ranged 15.62–250 µg/mL for bacteria, and 125–500 µg/mL for the yeast. Minimum microbiocidal concentration ranged 31.25 to 500 µg/mL, and 250 to 1000 µg/mL in bacteria and fungi respectively. Excessive alcohol intake leads to significant physiological complications, particularly alcoholic liver diseases (ALD). The extent of liver damage caused by ethanol correlates with increased oxidative stress and accumulation of lipids in the hepatic tissue. In this study, we investigated the defense properties of the aqueous extract of Perilla frutescens Briton Var. acuta Kudo (PF) on hepatic injury in chronically ethanol-treated mice. The mice were orally administered the water extract from PF for 4 weeks with ethanol treatment (3 g/kg. P.O.). The level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver tissues was determined. A substantial increase in MDA generation was detected in the livers of mice subjected to ethanol exposure, whereas the administration of PF markedly reduced MDA levels in hepatic tissues. Additionally, histological analysis of the liver tissue was performed. Histopathological investigation revealed a significant reduction in hepatocellular necrosis in the PF-treated group. This study demonstrated that the aqueous extract of Perilla frutescens Briton Var. acuta Kudo (PF) attenuated chronic ethanol-induced liver injury by augmenting the antioxidant capacity of mice. Diabetes is known to negatively affect male reproduction. Recent clinical results have confirmed that mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)–based therapies are safe and effective for the treatment of diabetes. However, the effect and potential mechanism through which MSC transplantation improves diabetes-derived male reproductive dysfunction are still unknown. In the present study, we first established a male T1D mouse model through intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin for five consecutive days. Subsequently, we evaluated the blood glucose levels, fertility, and histology and immunology of the pancreas, testes, and penis of T1D mice with or without transplantation of menstrual blood–derived endometrial stem cells (MenSCs) or umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs). Glucose was added to the medium in which the Leydig cells were cultured to imitate high glucose–injured cell viability. Subsequently, we evaluated the cellular viability, ROS levels, and mitochondrial membrane potential of Leydig cells treated with or without MenSC-conditioned medium (MenSC-CM) using a CCK8 assay, immunofluorescence, and flow cytometry. The targeted proteins are involved in the potential mechanism underlying MenSC-derived improvements, which was further validated via Western blotting. Collectively, our results indicated that MenSC transplantation significantly ameliorated reproductive dysfunction in male T1D mice by enhancing cellular antioxidative capacity and promoting angiogenesis. Enzymolytic soybean meal (ESBM) enriches free amino acids and small peptides, while mitigating anti-nutritional factors. Substituting soybean meal with ESBM enhances animal performance, though optimal piglet dietary supplementation levels vary. The present study aimed to assess the impact of ESBM on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, antioxidative capacity and intestinal health of weaned piglets. A total of 120 piglets (initial body weight, 7.0 ± 0.4 kg) were randomly allocated into 4 dietary groups, each comprising 5 replicates with 6 piglets per replicate. The control group received the basal diet, while the experimental groups were fed diets containing 2, 4% or 8% ESBM as a replacement for soybean meal over 28 days. Compared with the control group, piglets supplemented with 4% ESBM exhibited a significant increase (p < 0.05) in average daily gain and the apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter, ether extract and gross energy (p < 0.05), alongside a notable decrease (p < 0.05) in diarrhea incidence. Fed ESBM linearly increased (p < 0.05) the villus height in the ileum of piglets. The levels of superoxide dismutase and total antioxidant capacity in serum of piglets increased (p < 0.05) in the 2 and 4% ESBM groups, while diamine oxidase content decreased (p < 0.05) in the 4 and 8% ESBM group. ESBM inclusion also upregulated (p < 0.05) the expression of superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD-1), Catalase (CAT) and claudin-1 mRNA. In terms of cecal fermentation characteristics, ESBM supplementation resulted in a increase (p < 0.05) in valerate content and a linear rise (p < 0.05) in propionate, butyrate, and total short-chain fatty acids levels, accompanied by a decrease (p < 0.05) in the concentrations of tryptamine and NH3 in cecal digesta. ESBM had no discernible effect on cecal microbial composition. In summary, substitution of soybean meal with ESBM effectively improved the growth performance of piglets by enhancing nutrient digestibility, antioxidant capacity, intestinal barrier and cecal microbial fermentation characteristics, with the optimal replacement level identified at 4%. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic lung disease mainly affecting premature infants needing ventilation or oxygen for respiratory distress. This study aimed to evaluate the molecular linkages for BPD in very and extremely preterm infants using a metabolomics-based approach. A case-control study of enrolling preterm infants born before 32 weeks gestational age (GA) was prospectively performed. These preterm infants were subsequently stratified into the following two groups for further analysis: no or mild BPD, and moderate or severe BPD based on the 2019 NICHD criteria. Urinary metabolomic profiling was performed using 1H-Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy coupled with partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) at a corrected age of 6 months. Metabolites significantly differentially related to GA and BPD severity were performed between groups, and their roles in functional metabolic pathways were also assessed. A total of 89 preterm infants born before 32 weeks gestation and 50 infants born at term age (above 37 completed weeks' gestation) served as controls and were enrolled into the study. There were 21 and 24 urinary metabolites identified to be significantly associated with GA and BPD severity, respectively (p < 0.05). Among them, N-phenylacetylglycine, hippurate, acetylsalicylate, gluconate, and indoxyl sulfate were five metabolites that were significantly higher, with the highest importance in both infants with GA < 28 weeks and those with moderate to severe BPD, whereas betaine and N,N-dimethylglycine were significantly lower (p < 0.05). Furthermore, ribose and a gluconate related pentose phosphate pathway were strongly associated with these infants (p < 0.01). In conclusion, urinary metabolomic analysis highlights the crucial role of gut microbiota dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of BPD in preterm infants, accompanied by metabolites related to diminished antioxidative capacity, prompting an aggressive antioxidation response in extremely preterm infants with severe BPD. Flavonoids, as plant-derived compounds, were essential active components in traditional medicine for centuries. Their potential or confirmed effects include antiviral, antimutagenic, antiinflammatory, antibacterial, vasodilatory, and anticancer properties. The promotion of a plantbased diet, along with the benefits of consuming flavonoids, has recently become increasingly attractive. 3-Hydroxyflavone (3HF) is the structural spine of flavonols, an important subgroup of flavonoids. Although 3HF itself does not exist in plants per se, it exerts many of its effects because of its characteristics that allow it to prevent free radical generation. This work is focused on the characterization of 3HF complexes with zinc(II) and aluminium(III) ions (Zn-3HF and Al-3HF, respectively). Besides this, a simple, fast, and low-priced spectrophotometric method for 3HF determination, with very low LOD and LOQ, based on Zn-3HF and Al-3HF formation, was established. A slight advantage is given to the modification with Al3+ ion on pH 4.91, due to very low LOD and LOQ values of 1.83×10-7 molL-1 , and 5.50×10-7 molL-1 , respectively, and a high correlation coefficient, R =0.99986. Furthermore, the antioxidant ability of Zn-3HF, Al-3HF, and parent 3HF was examined by the ABTS and DPPH tests. They brought the Zn-3HF complex to the fore as a potential antioxidative agent.

The study aimed to explore the effects of Chinese yam polysaccharides on the immune function, antioxidative capacity, and intestinal microbiota of calves. Thirty-six healthy Holstein calves with an age of (30±3) days and a weight of (55.27±1.53) kg were randomly divided into two groups, with 18 replicates per group and one calf per replicate. The control group (CG group) was fed with 5 L/(head·d) of milk, while the experimental group (EG group) was fed with 5 L/(head·d) of milk containing 10 g of Chinese yam polysaccharidess. The experimental period lasted for 10 days. The results showed that compared to the CG group, the EG group exhibited a significant increase in the serum concentrations of IgA, IgG, IgM, TNF-α, and the activity of SOD (P<0.05). The EG group showed an increase in OTUs in the intestinal microbiota, with a notable elevation in the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteriota) by 21.67%, 60.83%, and 88.25%, respectively, while harmful bacteria of the phylum Bacteroidetes decreased. The study inidicates that adding Chinese yam polysaccharides to calf milk replacer can enhance immune function, improve antioxidative capacity, and regulate intestinal microbiota by increasing beneficial bacteria and reducing harmful bacteria. This study aims to investigate the impact of dietary supplementation with selenium yeast (SeY) and glycerol monolaurate (GML) on the transfer of antioxidative capacity between the mother and fetus during pregnancy and its underlying mechanisms. A total of 160 sows with similar body weight and parity of 3–6 parity sows were randomly and uniformly allocated to four groups (n = 40) as follows: CON group, SeY group, GML group, and SG (SeY + GML) group. Animal feeding started from the 85th day of gestation and continued to the day of delivery. The supplementation of SeY and GML resulted in increased placental weight and reduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels in sow plasma, placental tissues, and piglet plasma. Furthermore, the redox balance and inflammatory markers exhibited significant improvements in the plasma of sows fed with either SeY or GML, as well as in their offspring. Moreover, the addition of SeY and GML activated the Nrf2 signaling pathway, while downregulating the expression of pro-inflammatory genes and proteins associated with inflammatory pathways (MAPK and NF-κB). Vascular angiogenesis and nutrient transportation (amino acids, fatty acids, and glucose) were upregulated, whereas apoptosis signaling pathways within the placenta were downregulated with the supplementation of SeY and GML. The integrity of the intestinal and placental barriers significantly improved, as indicated by the increased expression of ZO-1, occludin, and claudin-1, along with reduced levels of DLA and DAO with dietary treatment. Moreover, supplementation of SeY and GML increased the abundance of Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, Clostridium_sensus_stricto_1, and Bacteroidota, while decreasing levels of gut microbiota metabolites LPS and trimethylamine N-oxide. Correlation analysis demonstrated a significant negative relationship between plasma LPS levels and placental weight, oxidative stress, and inflammation. In summary, dietary supplementation of SeY and GML enhanced the transfer of antioxidative capacity between maternal-fetal during pregnancy via gut–placenta axis through modulating sow microbiota composition. β-carotene has been shown to be beneficial for the color formulation, survival, antioxidation, immunity and stress resistance of many crustaceans. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of synthetic β-carotene on growth, antioxidant status, high pH resistance, color parameters, and carotenoids composition of pre-adult Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis. Three diets were formulated to contain 3.06, 52.40 and 103.59 mg/kg dry diets of synthetic β-carotene (defined as Diet 1 - 3). The results showed that: (1) There were no marked differences in body weights or feed utilization, suggesting that β-carotene was not particularly efficient in enhancing the growth of pre-adult E. sinensis. (2) Indicators of antioxidant capacity (T-AOC, MDA) and immunity (AKP, ACP) both got improved in the hepatopancreas and hemolymph with the supplementation of 50–100 mg/kg β-carotene in the diets. (3) The stress test with high pH indicated Diet 1 treatment had the highest mortality among all treatments, and the lowest mortality was found in Diet 3 treatment. (4) For color enhancement, the redness of the carapace and hepatopancreas increased significantly with the increase of dietary β-carotene supplementation at Day 30. Combined, the inclusion of β-carotene in the diet could enhance the antioxidative capability, non-specific immunity, stress resistance to high pH and tissue carotenoid contents, and the optimal level of dietary synthetic β-carotene supplementation was suggested to be around 50 mg/kg for pre-adult male E. sinensis.

The combined effects of Spirulina platensis (SP) and Pediococcus acidilactici (PA) on growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, antioxidative status, and immune genes in zebrafish were investigated in the present study. Four experimental diets were designed: control and three test diets mixed with SP at 2.5%, PA at 107 CFU/g, or a combination of 2.5% SP and 107 CFU/g PA. After 56 days, fish treated with PA and SP mixture had higher final weight, weight gain, SGR, and lower FCR than fish fed the control and SP diets (P<0.05). The results also illustrated that fish fed PA, SP, and their mixture had higher (P<0.05) protease and amylase activities than the control. The lipase activity was significantly higher in fish treated with PA or the mixture of PA and SP than in the control (P<0.05). The alternative complement pathway (ACH50) and lysozyme activity in the mucus samples of fish treated with PA or both PA and SP were significantly higher (P<0.05) than in fish treated with the control and SP diets. The total immunoglobulin level in the skin mucus was significantly higher (P<0.05) in fish fed PA than in control. In the body homogenates samples, the lysozyme activity and immunoglobulin levels were markedly higher (P<0.05) in fish treated with the mixture of PA and SP than in the control. The dietary PA and SP diet mixture improved the glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and total antioxidative capacity. The expression of IL-1β and IL-8 genes in fish treated with PA or the mixture of PA and SP was significantly higher (P<0.05) than in fish treated with the control or SP diets. Fish treated with PA, SP, or both PA and SP had marked (P<0.05) upregulation of the lysozyme gene expression. In conclusion, the mixture of S. platensis and P. acidilactici is more effective than using each individually for improving the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, and the immune and antioxidative capacity of zebrafish. Accelerated storage is routinely used with pharmaceuticals to predict stability and degradation patterns over time. The aim of this is to assess the shelf life and quality under harsher conditions, providing crucial insights into their long-term stability and potential storage issues. This study explores the potential of transferring this approach to food matrices for shelf-life estimation. Therefore, hazelnuts were stored under accelerated short-term and realistic long-term conditions. Subsequently, they were analyzed with high resolution mass spectrometry, focusing on the lipid profile. LC-MS analysis has shown that many unique processes take place under accelerated conditions that do not occur or occur much more slowly under realistic conditions. This mainly involved the degradation of membrane lipids such as phospholipids, ceramides, and digalactosyldiacylglycerides, while oxidation processes occurred at different rates in both conditions. It can be concluded that a food matrix is far too complex and heterogeneous compared to pharmaceuticals, so that many more processes take place during accelerated storage, which is why the results cannot be used to predict molecular changes in hazelnuts stored under realistic conditions. This study investigated the compound probiotics and heat-killed compound probiotics on antioxidants, plasma biochemical parameters, intestinal histopathology, and microbiome of koi fish, Cyprinus carpio haematopterus. Koi fish (15.9 ± 0.63 g) were fed with five different diets: C (control, basal diet without probiotics), D3 (3% compound probiotics), D6 (6% compound probiotics), lnaD3 (3% heat-killed compound probiotics), and lnaD6 (6% heat-killed compound probiotics). After 28 days of the feeding trial, results showed that the activities of acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), catalase (CAT), and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) were significantly improved in koi fish fed with heat-killed compound probiotics compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Interestingly, total activities of glutamyl oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), total protein (TP), albumin (TA), globulin (GLB), and triglyceride (TG) were significantly improved in koi fish fed with compound probiotics compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The intestinal muscular and intestinal villi height of lnaD3 was significantly higher than other groups (P < 0.05). In addition, compound probiotics and heat-killed compound probiotics increased the diversity of intestinal microbes. Therefore, dietary supplementation with heat-killed compound probiotics can be an effective measure for improving nonspecific immune response, intestinal morphology, and the flora of koi fish. The sialic acid N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA), an essential factor in bioregulation, is a functional food component that is known to have beneficial health effects, but its antiobesity effect has not been clearly understood. Adipocyte dysfunction in obesity involves a decrease in the level of NANA sialylation. In this study, we investigated the antiobesity effect of NANA in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) and in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Male C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into three groups and administered the following diets: a normal diet, an HFD, and an HFD with 1% NANA supplementation for 12 weeks. NANA supplementation significantly reduced body weight gain; epididymal adipose tissue hypertrophy; and serum lipid, fasting glucose, and aspartate transaminase levels compared with those in HFD mice. The percentage of lipid droplets in hepatic tissue was also decreased by NANA supplementation in HFD mice. The downregulation of Adipoq expression and upregulation of Fabp4 expression induced by HFD in epididymal adipocytes were improved by NANA supplementation. The downregulation of Sod1 expression and increase in malondialdehyde level were induced by HFD, and they were significantly improved in the liver by NANA supplementation, but not in epididymal adipocytes. However, NANA supplementation had no effect on sialylation and antioxidant enzyme levels in mouse epididymal adipocytes and 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Laminarin is a source of immunostimulants and antioxidative biomolecules involved in supporting the performance and health of aquatic animals. Hence, this study investigated the growth performance, intestinal morphology, blood biomarkers, and immune response of Thinlip Grey Mullet (Liza ramada) fed dietary laminarin. For 60 days, mullets were fed diets supplemented with laminarin at 0, 200, 400, 600, and 800 mg kg−1, then the growth performance was evaluated, and samples were collected. The FBW, WG, SGR, PER, and carcass lipid content were markedly increased, while the FCR was significantly lowered by dietary 600 and 800 mg kg−1. Further, the lipase and protease activities were significantly higher in mullets fed laminarin at 600 mg kg−1 than those fed 0, 200, 400, and 800 mg kg−1. The intestinal histopathological evaluation revealed that all layers of the intestinal villi and the intestinal wall appeared intact without any deteriorating changes. The intestinal mucosal lining of anterior and middle segments showed improved morphological appearance with increased goblet cells in the intestinal villi associated with increased supplemented laminarin level. The total protein, globulin, and total cholesterol were markedly higher in fish fed 400 and 600 mg kg−1 laminarin than those fed 0, 200, and 800 mg kg−1. Furthermore, the lysozyme, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activities were higher in mullets fed laminarin at 600 mg kg−1 than those fed a laminarin-free diet. The superoxide dismutase was higher in fish fed 200, 400, and 600 mg kg−1than those fed 0 and 800 mg kg−1. On the other hand, the malondialdehyde activity was markedly decreased by 400 and 600 mg kg−1 of dietary laminarin. Overall, dietary laminarin is required at 338–761 mg kg−1 to reveal the best growth performance, intestinal morphology, blood biomarkers, antioxidative, and immune response in mullets. Pomace is a residue of juice production, but still holds many valuable compounds, such as antioxidants. However, efficient extraction proves to be challenging, as extractability is highly dependent on experimental conditions. Furthermore, antioxidants are also often retained by structural polysaccharides. Consequently, this study investigates the extractability of antioxidants in five different types of pomace in a 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 full factorial fully replicated design to determine the most efficient way of extraction. Therefore, extracting agent, temperature, extraction method and use of enzyme to break down structural components were alternated to investigate the effects of these parameters on the extractability. Main effects as well as interaction effects were estimated with linear mixed models. To study the effects of polysaccharides on the retention of antioxidants, the amount of soluble polysaccharides was measured and connected to the antioxidant capacity at each experimental condition. The experiments showed that acetone was most suitable as an extracting agent and that the use of pectinase significantly increased the amount of extracted antioxidants. Additionally, ultrasound-assisted extraction is advantageous compared to extraction in water bath. Temperature showed the lowest effect in this experimental design. High-quality eggs are essential for the sustainability of commercial aquaculture production. Melatonin is a potent candidate for regulating the growth and maturation of oocytes. Therefore, research on the effect of melatonin on marine fish oocytes in vitro has been conducted. The present study successfully established a culture system of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) oocytes in vitro and investigated the effect of melatonin on oocyte meiotic maturation, antioxidant capacity, and the expression of apoptosis-related genes. The cultures showed that turbot Scophthalmus maximus late-vitellogenic denuded oocytes, with diameters of 0.5–0.7 mm, had a low spontaneous maturation rate and exhibited a sensitive response to 17α, 20β-dihydroxyprogesterone (DHP) treatment in vitro. Melatonin increased by four times the rate of oocyte germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The mRNA of melatonin receptor 1 (mtnr1) was significantly upregulated in the oocyte and follicle after treatment with melatonin (4.3 × 10−9 M) for 24 h in vitro, whereas melatonin receptor 2 (mtnr2) and melatonin receptor 3 (mtnr3) remained unchanged. In addition, melatonin significantly increased the activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase, as well as the levels of glutathione, while decreasing the levels of malondialdehyde and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in turbot oocytes and follicles cultures in vitro. p53, caspase3, and bax mRNAs were significantly downregulated in oocytes and follicles, whereas bcl2 mRNAs were significantly upregulated. In conclusion, the use of turbot late-vitellogenesis oocytes (0.5–0.7 mm) is suitable for establishing a culture system in vitro. Melatonin promotes oocyte meiotic maturation and antioxidative capacity and inhibits apoptosis via the p53-bax-bcl2 and caspase-dependent pathways, which have important potential to improve the maturation and quality of oocytes. Background/Aim: Due to the numerous beneficial effects of pomegranate that can be explained through its antioxidative effects, the aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant potential of pomegranate peel extract (PoPEx) prepared from pomegranate that was harvested in the southeast region of Herze-govina (Bosnia and Herzegovina), through in vitro and in vivo studies. Methods: In PoPEx total phenols, flavonoids, flavonols, flavan-3-ols and antho-cyanins content was determined, as well as several antioxidative assays, including 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH), 2,2'-azino bis(3-ethylbenzothi-azoline-6-sulphonic acid) assay (ABTS), iron (III)-2,4,6-tripyridyl-S-triazine complex assay (FRAP), reduction of copper(II) ions (CUPRAC) assay, Briggs-Rauscher oscillatory reactions, neutralisation of OH radicals and lipid peroxidation assay. In vivo studies were performed by administrating 100 mg/ kg of body weight of PoPEx to the rats by gavage for 7 days, after which the rats were euthanised and prooxidative parameters (thiobabrituric acid reactive substances-TBARS as an index of lipid peroxidation, nitrites-NO 2 , hydrogen peroxide-H 2 O 2 and superoxide anion radical O 2-) were determined in plasma, as well as antioxidative parameters (superoxide dismutase-SOD, reduced gluta-thione-GSH and catalase-CAT) in erythrocyte lysates. Results: High content of phenolic compounds was found in PoPEx, which resulted in high antioxidative potential in all in vitro tests performed. In vivo study showed that PoPEx administration caused a significant decrease in TBARS, NO 2-, as well as an increase in reduced glutathione (p < 0.05) in comparison to the control group, while H 2 O 2 and O 2 * showed a lowering trend and SOD and CAT showed an increasing trend in PoPEx group, but without statistical significance. Conclusion: PoPEx demonstrated high antioxidative capacity measured in vitro and in vivo and can be potentially used as a supplement treatment in the prevention of various inflammatory conditions.

This study aims to investigate the impact of dietary supplementation with selenium yeast (SeY) and glycerol monolaurate (GML) on the transfer of antioxidative capacity between the mother and fetus during pregnancy and its underlying mechanisms. A total of 160 sows with similar body weight and parity of 3–6 parity sows were randomly and uniformly allocated to four groups (n = 40) as follows: CON group, SeY group, GML group, and SG (SeY + GML) group. Animal feeding started from the 85th day of gestation and continued to the day of delivery. The supplementation of SeY and GML resulted in increased placental weight and reduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels in sow plasma, placental tissues, and piglet plasma. Furthermore, the redox balance and inflammatory markers exhibited significant improvements in the plasma of sows fed with either SeY or GML, as well as in their offspring. Moreover, the addition of SeY and GML activated the Nrf2 signaling pathway, while downregulating the expression of pro-inflammatory genes and proteins associated with inflammatory pathways (MAPK and NF-κB). Vascular angiogenesis and nutrient transportation (amino acids, fatty acids, and glucose) were upregulated, whereas apoptosis signaling pathways within the placenta were downregulated with the supplementation of SeY and GML. The integrity of the intestinal and placental barriers significantly improved, as indicated by the increased expression of ZO-1, occludin, and claudin-1, along with reduced levels of DLA and DAO with dietary treatment. Moreover, supplementation of SeY and GML increased the abundance of Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, Clostridium_sensus_stricto_1, and Bacteroidota, while decreasing levels of gut microbiota metabolites LPS and trimethylamine N-oxide. Correlation analysis demonstrated a significant negative relationship between plasma LPS levels and placental weight, oxidative stress, and inflammation. In summary, dietary supplementation of SeY and GML enhanced the transfer of antioxidative capacity between maternal-fetal during pregnancy via gut–placenta axis through modulating sow microbiota composition.

Obesity is one of the most common health issues in pregnancy with short and long-term consequences for both mother and her offspring. Promoting moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and decreasing sedentary time (ST) could have a positive impact on weight and obesity management, and therefore adiposity-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and atherogenesis. However, the effects of MVPA and ST on anti-oxidative and anti-atherogenic markers in pregnancy have not been studied to date. This study aimed to assess the association of longitudinally and objectively measured MVPA and ST in 122 overweight/obese women (BMI ≥ 29 kg/m2) with maternal and cord blood markers of oxidative stress measured by advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), anti-oxidative capacity, as well as high-density lipoproteins (HDL) related paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity and cholesterol efflux. Linear regression models showed no associations of MVPA and ST with outcomes in maternal blood. In contrast, MVPA at <20 weeks and 24–28 weeks of gestation were positively associated with anti-oxidative capacity, as well as PON-1 activity of HDL in cord blood. MVPA at 35–37 weeks correlated with higher AOPP, as well as higher anti-oxidative capacity. ST <20 weeks was also positively associated with inhibition of oxidation in cord blood. The phenolic profile of the wine of the grape variety ´Dobričić´ in relation to the wines of related varieties Dobričić is an old autochthonous grape variety originating from the island of Šolta. It is recognizable by its intense dark red color. It used to make up the majority of the island's vineyards. Today it is in revitalization as an island brand. DNA analysis has established its related links with many Dalmatian varieties. Wine is rich in color substances, total and individual phenols, and shows significant antioxidant activity.

Abstract Background Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a major inducer of higher morbidity and mortality in the pig industry and catch-up growth (CUG) before weanling could significantly restore this negative influence. But there was limited knowledge about the underlying mechanism of CUG occurrence. Methods Eighty litters of newborn piglets were divided into normal birth weight (NBW) and IUGR groups according to birth weight. At 26 d, those piglets with IUGR but over average body weight of eighty litters of weaned piglets were considered as CUG, and the piglets with IUGR still below average body weight were considered as NCUG. This study was conducted to systemically compare the intestinal difference among NBW, CUG and NCUG weaned piglets considering the crucial role of the intestine for piglet growth. Results The results indicated that the mRNA expression of nutrients (amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids) transporters, and mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) I were upregulated in CUG piglets’ gut with improved morphology compared with those NCUG, as well as the ratio of P-AMPK/AMPK protein expression which is the indicator of energy metabolism. Meanwhile, CUG piglet’s gut showed higher antioxidative capacity with increased SOD and GSH-Px activity, decreased MDA levels, as well as higher mRNA expressions of Nrf2, Keap1, SOD, and GSH-Px. Furthermore, inflammatory parameters including TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-12 factors, and the activation of MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways were significantly elevated in the NCUG intestine, while the protein expression of ZO-1, Occludin and Claudin-1 was reduced. The alpha diversity of fecal microbiota was higher in CUG piglets in contrast with NCUG piglets, and the increased beneficial bacteria and decreased pathogenic bacteria was also observed in CUG piglets. Conclusions CUG piglet’s intestine showed comprehensive restoration including higher nutrients transport, energy metabolism, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal physical barrier, while lower oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and pathogenic microbiota.

Ardisia silvestris is a traditional medicinal herb used in Vietnam and several other countries. However, the skin-protective properties of A. silvestris ethanol extract (As-EE) have not been evaluated. Human keratinocytes form the outermost barrier of the skin and are the main target of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV exposure causes skin photoaging via the production of reactive oxygen species. Protection from photoaging is thus a key component of dermatological and cosmetic products. In this research, we found that As-EE can prevent UV-induced skin aging and cell death as well as enhance the barrier effect of the skin. First, the radical-scavenging ability of As-EE was checked using DPPH, ABTS, TPC, CUPRAC, and FRAP assays, and a 3-(4-5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2-5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay was used to examine cytotoxicity. Reporter gene assays were used to determine the doses that affect skin-barrier-related genes. A luciferase assay was used to identify possible transcription factors. The anti-photoaging mechanism of As-EE was investigated by determining correlated signaling pathways using immunoblotting analyses. As-EE had no harmful effects on HaCaT cells, according to our findings, and As-EE revealed moderate radical-scavenging ability. With high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, rutin was found to be one of the major components. In addition, As-EE enhanced the expression levels of hyaluronic acid synthase-1 and occludin in HaCaT cells. Moreover, As-EE dose-dependently up-regulated the production of occludin and transglutaminase-1 after suppression caused by UVB blocking the activator protein-1 signaling pathway, in particular, the extracellular response kinase and c-Jun N-terminal kinase. Pregravid obesity is one of the major risk factors for pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and an increased risk of cardiovascular events in children of affected mothers. However, the biological mechanisms that underpin these adverse outcomes are not well understood. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are antiatherogenic by promoting the efflux of cholesterol from macrophages and by suppression of inflammation. Functional impairment of HDLs in obese and GDM-complicated pregnancies may have long-term effects on maternal and offspring health. In the present study, we assessed metrics of HDL function in sera of pregnant women with overweight/obesity of the DALI lifestyle trial (prepregnancy BMI ≥ 29 kg/m2) and women with normal weight (prepregnancy BMI < 25 kg/m2), as well as HDL functionalities in cord blood at delivery. We observed that pregravid obesity was associated with impaired serum antioxidative capacity and lecithin–cholesterol acyltransferase activity in both mothers and offspring, whereas maternal HDL cholesterol efflux capacity was increased. Interestingly, functionalities of maternal and fetal HDL correlated robustly. GDM did not significantly further alter the parameters of HDL function and metabolism in women with obesity, so obesity itself appears to have a major impact on HDL functionality in mothers and their offspring. ABSTRACT: Taurine (TAU), a sulfur-containing amino acid that synthesized from methionine and cystine, plays vital roles in maintenance of redox balance. The effect of substitution of TAU for methionine was evaluated in vivo and in vitro. The effects of replacing methionine with TAU and additional TAU supplementation on the performance and antioxidant capacity of laying hens were evaluated. The in vitro cultured chicken primary hepatocytes and intestinal epithelial cells were further employed. Two hubdred eighty-eight 40-wk-old Isa brown laying hens were divided into 4 groups and subjected one to the following treatments: fed with basal diet with 0.17% crystallized DL-Met (CON), the control diet and replace 25% (21% total Met, 21TAU) or 50% (42% total Met, 42TAU) of crystallized DL-Met with taurine, the control diet supplemented with 0.1% taurine (0.1% TAU). The laying rate, feed intake, egg weight, and feed efficiency were not influenced (P > 0.05) by TAU replacement or additional TAU supplementation. In the liver, 0.1% TAU decreased SOD but increased GSH-Px activity (P < 0.01). In duodenum, 42TAU decreased SOD activity (P < 0.05) while 0.1% TAU decreased GSH level and SOD activity (P < 0.05). In the hepatocytes, TAU treatment decreased (P < 0.05) the MDA and GSH contents, whereas increased SOD and GSH-Px activities (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, TAU treatment decreased (P < 0.05) the protein expression of Nrf2 while increase Keap1 expression. The mRNA expression of Nrf2, SOD1, SOD2, CAT, and GCLC were increased (P < 0.05) and GSR were decreased (P < 0.05) by 0.1% TAU. In the intestinal epithelial cells, TAU treatment decreased (P < 0.05) SOD activity, increased (P < 0.05) CAT activity, and decreased (P < 0.05) the mRNA and protein expression of Nrf2. In summary, partial substitution methionine for taurine (21–42%) has no influence on egg performance of hens. Taurine enhances the antioxidative capacity in hepatocyte but not in the enterocytes and if taurine could offer an improved effect on antioxidant capacity needs to be verified under oxidative stress-challenged conditions.

Lead (Pb2+) pollution in the soil sub-ecosystem has been a continuously growing problem due to economic development and ever-increasing anthropogenic activities across the world. In this study, the photosynthetic performance and antioxidant capacity of Triticeae cereals (rye, wheat and triticale) were compared to assess the activities of antioxidants, the degree of oxidative damage, photochemical efficiency and the levels of photosynthetic proteins under Pb stress (0.5 mM, 1 mM and 2 mM Pb (NO3)2). Compared with triticale, Pb treatments imposed severe oxidative damage in rye and wheat. In addition, the highest activity of major antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT, and GPX) was also found to be elevated. Triticale accumulated the highest Pb contents in roots. The concentration of mineral ions (Mg, Ca, and K) was also high in its leaves, compared with rye and wheat. Consistently, triticale showed higher photosynthetic activity under Pb stress. Immunoblotting of proteins revealed that rye and wheat have significantly lower levels of D1 (photosystem II subunit A, PsbA) and D2 (photosystem II subunit D, PsbD) proteins, while no obvious decrease was noticed in triticale. The amount of light-harvesting complex II b6 (Lhcb6; CP24) and light-harvesting complex II b5 (Lhcb5; CP26) was significantly increased in rye and wheat. However, the increase in PsbS (photosystem II subunit S) protein only occurred in wheat and triticale exposed to Pb treatment. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that triticale shows higher antioxidant capacity and photosynthetic efficiency than wheat and rye under Pb stress, suggesting that triticale has high tolerance to Pb and could be used as a heavy metal-tolerant plant.

BACKGROUND: Feruloyl oligosaccharides (FOs), the ferulic acid ester of oligosaccharides, may possess the physiological functions of both ferulic acid and oligosaccharides, including antioxidative activity and gut microbiota modulation capacity. The present study aimed to investigate whether FOs could regulate the intestinal antioxidative capacity of rats by modulating the MAPKs/Nrf2 signaling pathway and gut microbiota. Thirty Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups. Rats received a standard diet and were gavaged once daily with 0.85% normal saline, 100 mg kg−1 body weight vitamin C or FOs solution at doses of 20, 40 and 80 mg kg−1 body weight for 21 days. RESULTS: FOs strengthened the antioxidative capacity of the jejunum, as indicated by increased in contents of catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, as well as glutathione. Moreover, FOs administration upregulated the mRNA expression level of antioxidant‐related genes (glutamate‐cysteine ligase catalytic subunit, glutamate‐cysteine ligase modifier subunit and heme oxygenase‐1) in the jejunum. Increases in phosphorylation levels of Nrf2, p38 and JNK were also observed. Administration with 40 mg kg−1 FOs altered the structure and composition of the cecal microbiota, which was indicated by the increased the relative abundances of Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Acidobacteriota, and the decreased the relative abundances of Firmicutes, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group and Blautia. Furthermore, Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the altered cecal microbiota closely correlated with jejunal antioxidative capacity of rats. As a commercial high-grade cut flower, the marketability of herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) is limited by its short vase life in water. Si (silicon) is an alternative to improve the postharvest life of cut flowers. However, the effects of the combined application of Si and preservatives on the postharvest performance of cut peony flowers are unknown. In this study, the effects of a Si application and a preservative alone and collegial on the longevity of the vase life, water loss, antioxidant defense system, and stock carbohydrates level of cut flowers of three peony cultivars were investigated. It was observed that Si effectively prolonged the vase life, while the preservative alone, to a lesser extent, but markedly induced an early flowering and a greater flower diameter (flower open degree). The simultaneous use of Si and the preservatives not only showed larger flowers, but also improved the postharvest performance as characterized by an extended vase life and delayed the water loss. In addition, the Si supplementation dramatically intensified the antioxidant defense system (ameliorated antioxidant enzymes and alleviated ROS accumulation) in petals but did not increase the stock carbohydrates (starch and soluble sugars) levels, as compared to the treatment with the preservative alone. We show that a Si supplementation to a preservative is highly recommended for a large-scale use to promote the postharvest performance and competitiveness of marketed cut flowers. Bread is a staple food and can be a potential product to be enriched with various deficient nutrients. The objective of the study was to characterize the nutritional properties of toasted bread enriched with 10% and 20% of kale and wholemeal bread with 20% and 40% of spinach. The supplementation increased the phenolic content up to 2–3 times in the bread with the addition of 20% spinach and 40% kale. The highest antioxidant properties were noticed in extracts of bread with 20% kale. The in vitro digestion released the hydrophilic and lipophilic antioxidative compounds, leading to higher bioaccessibility of the breads enriched with these selected green vegetables. Even more than a 2-fold increase in folate content was observed in breads with the greatest addition of kale (20%) and spinach (40%), from 18.1 to 45.3 µg/100 g and from 37.2 to 83.2 µg/100 g, respectively, compared to the non-enriched breads. Breads with spinach showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher contents of all of the tested minerals, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Mg, Ca, Na, K, and P, whereas kale enriched breads showed most of them. The results suggest that the addition of fresh green vegetables can enhance the daily supply of micronutrients and significantly increase the bioavailability of bioactive compounds with high antioxidant status. The alpha diversity of fecal microbiota was higher in CUG piglets in contrast with NCUG piglets, and the increased beneficial bacteria and decreased pathogenic bacteria was also observed in CUG piglets. Conclusions: CUG piglet's intestine showed comprehensive restoration including higher nutrients transport, energy metabolism, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal physical barrier, while lower oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and pathogenic microbiota. Probiotics can functionally improve fish wellbeing and are suggested as antioxidative agents to protect fish from xenobiotics toxicity. Herein, dietary Lactobacillus casei (IBRC-M 10,711) was included in the diets of goldfish (Carassius auratus) to protect against malathion toxicity. Fish (12.47 ± 0.06 g) were randomly allocated to six groups (triplicates), as follows: T1) control; T2) fish exposed to 50% of malathion 96 h LC50; T3) L. casei at 106 CFU/g diet; T4) L. casei at 107 CFU/g diet; T5) fish exposed to 50% of malathion 96 h LC50 + L. casei at 106 CFU/g diet; T6) fish exposed to 50% of malathion 96 h LC50 + L. casei at 107 CFU/g diet. After 60 days, goldfish fed T4 had the highest final body weight (FBW), weight gain (WG), and specific growth rate (SGR), and the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) among the groups (P < 0.05). However, the T2 group showed lower FBW, WG, and SGR and higher FCR than fish in T1 (P < 0.05). Fish in the T4 group had the highest blood total proteins, albumin, and globulin, while fish in T2 had the lowest levels (P < 0.05). Fish in the group T2 had the highest triglycerides, cholesterol, cortisol, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels in the blood, while fish fed T4 had the lowest values (P < 0.05). The superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) showed the highest activities in T3 and T4 groups, and the lowest SOD was seen in the T2 group, whereas the lowest CAT was seen in the T2, T5, and T6 groups (P < 0.05). Fish in the T5 and T6 groups had higher glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities than fish in T1 and T2 groups but T3 and T4 groups showed the highest values (P < 0.05). T2 group had the highest malondialdehyde (MDA) level, while T3 and T4 groups had the lowest MDA level (P < 0.05). Blood immunoglobulin (Ig) and lysozyme activity were significantly higher in T3 and T4 groups and lower in the T2 group than in the control (P < 0.05). The alternative complement pathway (ACH50) was significantly higher in T2, T3, T4, T5, and T6 groups than in the T1 group (P < 0.05). Skin mucus Ig was significantly higher in T3 and T4 groups and lower in the T2 group than in the control (P < 0.05). The highest lysozyme activity, protease, and ACH50 in the skin mucus samples were in the T4 group, while the lowest values were in the T2 group (P < 0.05). Accelerated storage is routinely used with pharmaceuticals to predict stability and degradation patterns over time. The aim of this is to assess the shelf life and quality under harsher conditions, providing crucial insights into their long-term stability and potential storage issues. This study explores the potential of transferring this approach to food matrices for shelf-life estimation. Therefore, hazelnuts were stored under accelerated short-term and realistic long-term conditions. Subsequently, they were analyzed with high resolution mass spectrometry, focusing on the lipid profile. LC-MS analysis has shown that many unique processes take place under accelerated conditions that do not occur or occur much more slowly under realistic conditions. This mainly involved the degradation of membrane lipids such as phospholipids, ceramides, and digalactosyldiacylglycerides, while oxidation processes occurred at different rates in both conditions. It can be concluded that a food matrix is far too complex and heterogeneous compared to pharmaceuticals, so that many more processes take place during accelerated storage, which is why the results cannot be used to predict molecular changes in hazelnuts stored under realistic conditions.

High-quality eggs are essential for the sustainability of commercial aquaculture production. Melatonin is a potent candidate for regulating the growth and maturation of oocytes. Therefore, research on the effect of melatonin on marine fish oocytes in vitro has been conducted. The present study successfully established a culture system of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) oocytes in vitro and investigated the effect of melatonin on oocyte meiotic maturation, antioxidant capacity, and the expression of apoptosis-related genes. The cultures showed that turbot Scophthalmus maximus late-vitellogenic denuded oocytes, with diameters of 0.5–0.7 mm, had a low spontaneous maturation rate and exhibited a sensitive response to 17α, 20β-dihydroxyprogesterone (DHP) treatment in vitro. Melatonin increased by four times the rate of oocyte germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The mRNA of melatonin receptor 1 (mtnr1) was significantly upregulated in the oocyte and follicle after treatment with melatonin (4.3 × 10−9 M) for 24 h in vitro, whereas melatonin receptor 2 (mtnr2) and melatonin receptor 3 (mtnr3) remained unchanged. In addition, melatonin significantly increased the activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase, as well as the levels of glutathione, while decreasing the levels of malondialdehyde and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in turbot oocytes and follicles cultures in vitro. p53, caspase3, and bax mRNAs were significantly downregulated in oocytes and follicles, whereas bcl2 mRNAs were significantly upregulated. In conclusion, the use of turbot late-vitellogenesis oocytes (0.5–0.7 mm) is suitable for establishing a culture system in vitro. Melatonin promotes oocyte meiotic maturation and antioxidative capacity and inhibits apoptosis via the p53-bax-bcl2 and caspase-dependent pathways, which have important potential to improve the maturation and quality of oocytes.

Cysteamine (CS), as a feed supplement, can increase the level of growth hormone (GH) in the blood, promote animal growth. However, little attention has been paid to the effects of CS on the rumen microbiome and metabolic profile in cashmere goats. This study aimed to assess the effects of rumen microbiota, metabolites, and plasma antioxidative capacity induced by CS supplementation in cashmere goats. We selected 30 Inner Mongolia white cashmere goat ewes (aged 18 months), and randomly separate the goats into three groups (n = 10 per group) to experiment for 40 days. Oral 0 (control group, CON), 60 (low CS, LCS), or 120 mg/kg BW−1 (high CS, HCS) coated CS hydrochloride every day. Using 16S and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we identified 12 bacterial and 3 fungal genera with significant changes among the groups, respectively. We found a significant increase in rumen NH3-N and total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) concentrations in the LCS and HCS groups compared with the CON. With untargeted LC–MS/MS metabolomics, we screened 59 rumen differential metabolites. Among the screened metabolites, many unsaturated and saturated fatty acids increased and decreased with CS treatment, respectively. CS supplementation increased the levels of plasma total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), GH, and insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1). Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the abundance of U29-B03, Lactococcus, and Brochothrix were positively associated with the levels of δ2-THA, TVFA and antioxidant capacity. In conclusion, CS significantly affected rumen microbiota and fermentation parameters, and ultimately inhibited the biohydrogenation of rumen metabolites, enhanced plasma antioxidant capacity, and regulated some hormones of the GH–IGF-1 axis. This study provides an overall view into the CS application as a strategy to improve health production in cashmere goats.

This study aims to explore the effects of modified montmorillonite (MMT, copper loading) on the growth performance, gut microbiota, intestinal barrier, antioxidative capacity and immune function of broilers. Yellow-feathered broilers were randomly divided into control (CTR), modified montmorillonite (MMT), and antibiotic (ANTI) groups. Results revealed that MMT supplementation increased the BW and ADG and decreased the F/R during the 63-day experiment period. 16S rRNA sequencing showed that MMT modulated the cecal microbiota composition of broilers by increasing the relative abundance of two phyla (Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes) and two genera (Bacteroides and Faecalibacterium) and decreasing the abundance of genus Olsenella. MMT also improved the intestinal epithelial barrier indicated by the up-regulated mRNA expression of claudin-1, occludin, and ZO-1 and the increased length of microvilli in jejunum and the decreased levels of DAO and D-LA in serum. In addition, MMT enhanced the immune function indicated by the increased levels of immunoglobulins, the decreased levels of MPO and NO, the down-regulated mRNA expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, and the up-regulated mRNA expression of IL-4 and IL-10. Moreover, MMT down-regulated the expression of jejunal TLRs/MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway-related genes (TLR2, TLR4, Myd88, TRAF6, NF-κB, and iNOS) and related proteins (TRAF6, p38, ERK, NF-κB, and iNOS). In addition, MMT increased the antioxidant enzyme activities and the expression of Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway-related genes and thereby decreased the apoptosis-related genes expression. Spearman's correlation analysis revealed that Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium, and Olsenella were related to the inflammatory index (MPO and NO), oxidative stress (T-AOC, T-SOD, and CAT) and intestinal integrity (D-LA and DAO). Taken together, MMT supplementation improved the growth performance of broilers by modulating intestinal microbiota, enhancing the intestinal barrier function, and improving inflammatory response, which might be mediated by inhibiting the TLRs/MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway, and antioxidative capacity mediated by the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. BACKGROUND: Improper disposal of stevia residue causes environmental pollution and waste of resources. The extract of stevia residue is rich in chlorogenic acid and isochlorogenic acids, and has a great potential in livestock and poultry breeding. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary stevia residue extract (SRE) supplementation on the performance, meat quality, antioxidative capacity and gut microbiota in growing–finishing pigs. RESULTS: The results showed that increasing the concentration of SRE supplementation linearly increased (P < 0.05) body weight from day 1 to 35. Supplementation with SRE significantly increased (P < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG) from day 1 to 75. 100 mg kg−1 SRE supplementation significantly increased (P < 0.05) hot carcass weight and gastric index. Moreover, increasing the concentration of SRE linearly increased (P < 0.05) the score of appearance of longissimus thoracis, as well as serum albumin, triglyceride and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol content. Further study found that increasing the concentration of SRE linearly increased (P < 0.05) serum total superoxide dismutase activity, and showed a significant quadratic relationship (P < 0.05) with activity of serum catalase, while linearly decreasing (P < 0.05) muscle malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Furthermore, supplementation with 100 mg kg−1 SRE significantly decreased (P < 0.05) serum MDA content, while 600 and 800 mg kg−1 SRE supplementation significantly decreased (P < 0.05) muscle MDA content. However, SRE supplementation had no significant effect on gut microbiota (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: These data indicated that dietary SRE supplementation improves the performance and antioxidative capacity of growing–finishing pigs. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with Artemisia argyi (A. argyi) on egg quality, serum biochemical, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal development in Roman laying hens. A total of 432 (34-week-old) Roman hens were randomly divided into control group and three experimental groups. The control group was fed a basal diet, and the experimental group was fed a basal diet with 1%, 2%, and 3% A. argyi powder, respectively. The results showed that dietary supplementation of 2% A. argyi to the diet increased egg weight and egg white weight, and the daturic acid (C17:0), stearic acid (C18:0), eicosadienoic acid (C20:2), docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3), a-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3), linoleic acid (C18:2n-6c), and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in egg yolk. Meanwhile, the addition of 1~3% A. argyi decreased serum urea. Moreover, dietary supplementation of 1% A. argyi promoted the antioxidative capacity of the hens by increasing hepatic T-SOD and CAT activities, as well as GSH-Px content. However, the addition of 3% A. argyi to the diet significantly increased the content of malondialdehyde in serum and liver and destroyed the intestinal morphology by increasing duodenal crypt depth. Simple Summary: The present study assessed and proved the potential of ramie as a new feed ingredient in Yanling white geese, expressed as improved production performance, normal organ function as well as a certain promotion on antioxidative capabilities and meat quality in geese. To investigate the effects of different levels of ramie powder (Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich.) (i.e., 0%, 6%, 12% and 24%) on the production performance, serum biochemical indices, antioxidative capacity and intestinal development of Yanling white geese, a total of 256 geese at 56 days of age were randomly divided into four groups and fed a control diet and the control diet supplemented with 6%, 12% and 24% ramie powder, respectively, for 42 days. The results show that dietary supplementation with 12% ramie powder significantly increased the average final weight (p < 0.05) and tended to improve the average daily gain (ADG) and feed/gain ratio (F/G) of the test geese (0.05 < p < 0.10). Moreover, the dietary inclusion of 12 and 24% ramie powder improved meat qualities by reducing the L* value (p < 0.05) and cooking loss (0.05 < p < 0.10) of thigh muscle. Compared with the control group, the ramie powder supplementation at different levels increased the serum activities of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione, promoting the antioxidative capacity of the body (0.05 < p < 0.10). This study demonstrates that moderate ramie powder is beneficial to the production performance of Yanling white geese and has the potential to be used as a poultry feed ingredient. A feeding trial was performed to investigate the effects of dietary lysine levels on growth performance and antioxidative capacity of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus. Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets with 19.3 (the control), 20.5, 22.1, 23.1 and 24.4 g kg−1 of lysine were formulated. Results showed that compared with the control, 23.1 g kg−1 dietary lysine increased the weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR), and decreased the feed conversion ratio (FCR; p < 0.05). Based on the quadratic regression analysis of SGR and FCR, the optimal dietary lysine level was 22.2 and 21.9 g kg−1, respectively. As dietary lysine levels increasing from 19.3 to 24.4 g kg−1, the catalase activity increased significantly, while the malondialdehyde content decreased (p < 0.05). The mRNA levels of antioxidative genes in liver were markedly upregulated with the increase of lysine levels (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the mRNA levels of target of rapamycin (TOR), kelch‐like ECH‐associated protein 1 (Keap1) and nuclear factor erythroid 2‐related factor 2 (Nrf2) were increased (p < 0.05). In conclusion, 22.2 and 21.9 g kg−1 dietary lysine could improve the growth performance of channel catfish. To investigate the influence of beer consumption on levels of homocysteine (HCY), vitamin B6, B12, folic acid (FA), dimethylglycine (DMG), betaine (BET) and other selected markers. One hundred and sixteen male volunteers were enrolled in the study. A one-month period of alcohol abstinence was followed by a one month when participants drank 830 ml of alcoholic beer every day. After that phase, one month of alcohol abstinence followed. At the beginning and after every phase, blood samples were taken and analysed. Ninety-three participants completed the study. After the phase of alcohol consumption, uric acid (UA) (p<0.0001), antioxidative capacity (AOC) (p=0.02), superoxide dismutase (SOD) (0.025), glutathione reductase (GRH) (0.0001), total cholesterol (p<0.0001), HDL-cholesterol (p<0.0001), Apolipoprotein-AI (ApoAI) (p<0.0001), LDL-cholesterol (p<0.039) and Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) (p<0.009) increased, while vitamin B12 (p=0.0001) and fibrinogen (p<0.0001) decreased. Other tested parameters (DMG, BET, vitamin B6 and FA) did not show any significant changes. UA changes and changes in AOC were statistically significantly correlated (r=0.52, p<0.0001). HCY, DMG and BET levels did not show any statistically significant changes after beer consumption, whereas some markers of redox metabolism increased (UA, AOC, SOD and GRH). The objective was to investigate the effects of alfalfa (Medicago sativa Linn)-mixed silage fermentation material (AMSFM) on various aspects of growth, function, and carcass characteristics of Lande (meat) geese. Based on a previous study, we used the following AMSFM: 80% Alfalfa +10% soybean meal +10% DDGS ensiled for 45 days. Lande geese, n = 264, 77 days of age, were randomly allocated into four groups with six replicates in each group. Control geese were fed a basal diet, whereas experimental groups were fed a basal diet supplemented with 6, 12, or 24% AMSFM. The experiment lasted 21 days. The AMSFMpromoted some aspects of growth, with increase (p < 0.05) in leg muscle rate, lean meat rate, muscle protein content, and total energy content of leg muscle plus concurrent decreases (p < 0.05) in crude fat content and abdominal fat rate in chest muscle. In addition, AMSFM increased (p < 0.05) glutathione content in chest and leg muscles and serum superoxide dismutase activity, and it reduced (p < 0.05) muscle malondialdehyde content and serum concentrations of triglycerides, total cholesterol, urea, and aspartate aminotransferase, consistent with good liver and kidney function. Moreover, AMSFM improved (p < 0.05) ileum morphology. In conclusion, the optimal supplemented rate of AMSFM in the meat geese diet (12%) improved immunity and antioxidant status and enhanced growth performance and carcass characteristics of meat geese. Albumin (HSA) is a multifunctional protein and due to its free Cys34 thiol group, represents a main source of free thiols in the circulation. This property of HSA, combined with its ability to sequester redox active Cu(II) ions, makes HSA a dominant circulatory antioxidant. End stage kidney disease (ESRD) is a condition accompanied by elevated oxidative stress. The aim of the present study was to examine changes in the antioxidative capacity of HSA and Cu(II) binding affinity in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD), and relate it to the Cys34 thiol group content and other structural changes of this molecule. HSA molecules are modified in ESRD patients subjected to PD, having significantly lower thiol group and bound Cu(II) content, reduced antioxidant capacity, an increased content of advanced glycation end-products and altered conformation. Also, Cu(II) binding capacity of HSA in these patients is impaired, since a significant portion of the high-affinity metal-binding site is unable to interact with Cu(II). Taking into account that the concentration of Cu(II) in the circulation of ESRD patients is much higher than in healthy persons and that Cu(II) binding capacity of HSA in these patients is significantly impaired, HSA may be considered as a novel circulatory pro-oxidant, thus exacerbating oxidative stress. This study aimed to evaluate the dietary supplementation of α-lipoic acid (ALA) on the growth performance, antioxidative capacity, and protein-sparring effect of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) fingerling. The striped catfish (individual weight of 1.4 ± 0.0 g) were stocked in 25 cages at 2×1×1.5 m size in a 200 m pond at 50 fish. Fish were fed formulated diets with ALA supplementation, namely: diet A (27% protein: 390 kcal), diet B (27% protein: 390 kcal +ALA 8 g/kg), diet C (27% protein: 400 kcal), diet D (27% protein: 400 kcal +ALA 8 g/kg), and diet E (30% protein: 390 kcal). Feeding was performed until apparent satiation for 60 days. The ALA supplementation significantly produced higher final individual weight, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio, followed by a lower feed conversion ratio on the 27:390+ALA diet treatment (P<0.05) than other diet treatments. The highest liver performance based on superoxide dismutase enzyme activity and glycogen contents was obtained from the 27:390+ALA diet treatment. The malondialdehyde, triglycerides, and lipid accumulation in the liver on the 27:390+ALA diet treatment were lower than other diet treatments (P<0.05). This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum and compound probiotics (GH35A and GH35B) on the growth performance, antioxidative capacity, intestinal morphology and microbiota of Litopenaeus vannamei. Shrimps (1.29 ± 0.01 g) were fed with five different diets: C (control, basal diet without probiotics), LP1 (basal diet supplemented with 0.05% heat-killed L. plantarum powder), LP2 (basal diet supplemented with 0.1% heat-killed L. plantarum powder), T1 (basal diet supplemented with 15% GH35A and 1% GH35B) and T2 (basal diet supplemented with 15% GH35A and 2% GH35B). After 28 days of the feeding trial, it was observed that the body weight gain (BWG), specific growth rate (SGR), condition factor (CF) and intestinal somatic index (ISI) were significantly higher in groups T1 and T2 compared to those observed in group C (p < 0.05). Compared with the control group, dietary supplementation of heat-killed L. plantarum and compound probiotics significantly influenced the activities of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) in the hepatopancreas. The structure of intestinal villi in the groups LP2 and T2 was well-developed compared with the other treatments. The dominant phyla in L. vannamei were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, and the abundances of Verrucomicrobia and Firmicutes were the lowest in C. Haloferula, which was the most abundant in LP2 and T1. Overall, dietary heat-killed L. plantarum and compound probiotics could positively influence the growth performance, antioxidative capacity, intestinal morphology and microbiota of L. vannamei.
