The contributions examine the contrast between genre theory and practice, the interplay of genre interference and intertextuality, and the tension between convention and innovation. The focus is on the relationship of post-Augustan epic poetry to the earlier tradition, i.e. to authoritative predecessors such as Homer, Virgil and Ovid. The self-positioning of later poets in relation to the canon often goes hand in hand with an endeavour to reconfigure traditional elements: By omitting, varying or exaggerating aspects typical of the genre, their works enter into a dialogue with the earlier epics, permanently subverting the audience's horizons of expectation. The integration of non-genre discourses plays a central role here: modern literary concepts for analysing genre interference are critically evaluated in the anthology and incorporated into the interpretation in a reflective manner. The methodological range and innovative approaches in this volume make an important contribution to deepening and expanding the current state of research.

This book presents an archaeological overview of the presence and development of Egyptian material culture in the context of Augustan Rome. The Augustan period was a crucial turning point for the urban landscape of Rome, which became specifically characterised by a complex, and often flexible repertoire of cultural diversity. Studies in the past have focused primarily on (classical) Greek influences on the development of Augustan material culture, while objects featuring Egyptian styles, themes and materials have remained generally categorised as exoticism, a fashion trend, or signs of so-called'Egyptomania'. The research presented and discussed in this book, in contrast, raises the question whether and how'Egypt'constituted an integral part of this Augustan material culture repertoire. By comprising for the first time a comprehensive and interpretative overview of such manifestations of Egypt in Rome, including public monuments, paintings, and architectural elements, as well as pottery, gems, and jewellery from private contexts, the study offers wide-ranging case studies, featuring object reappraisals as well as new archaeological finds and contextual analyses. By focusing on the archaeological data, rather than on the often better-known historical and textual sources, this books offers new arguments and evidence that the role of'Egypt', as represented in the material culture of the city of Rome, was not that of an exotic outsider, but constituted a remarkably diverse and inherent part of the Augustan material culture repertoire and urban landscape.

The third century BC was a particularly troubled period of ancient Greek history, when the Aegean sea became the main stage for power struggles between various royal circles and dynasties, including the Antigonids and the Ptolemies. This volume addresses the history of interaction in the Aegean world during this time by focusing on the island of Delos, which housed one of its most important regional sanctuaries. It draws on contemporary network theory and approaches to regionalism, as well as thorough investigation of the Delian epigraphic and material evidence, to explore how and to what degree the islands of the southern Aegean formed active networks of political, religious, and cultural interaction. Four case studies examine different types of networks on and around Delos, covering the federal organisation of islands into the so-called'Islanders'League', the participation of Delian and other agents in the processes of monumentalisation of the Delian landscape, the network of honours of the Delian community, and the social dynamics of dedication through the record of dedicants in the Delian inventories. They reveal not only that these kinds of regional interaction in the southern Aegean were pervasive, but also that they had a significant impact on the creation of a regional identity; one that persisted despite the political changes of the age.

The book's central argument is that the best way to interpret the Sermon on the Plain in Luke 6 is to read it as a Greco-Roman panegyric, whose function was the integration of new members and the inculcation of commonly held values. The Sermon's makarisms and woes and their juxtaposition of poverty and richness, and exhortation are Luke's attempt to construct a new socio-economic identity of Christ-followers by supplanting the values of the dominant culture with a new set of values adopted from the status of destitution for both the rich and the poor. This results in their common dependence on the Lord for their daily provisions. Such reliance on the Lord allows for the koinonia between the rich and the poor among the first-century Christ-followers. This socio-economic motif is replicated throughout the Third Gospel and typifies Luke's concept of salvation as a holistic one.

Jan Dirk Harke zeichnet nach, wie sich dieses Recht allmählich gegen eine zunächst unbegrenzte Testierfreiheit im römischen Vermögensrecht durchsetzte: Um dem Gebot der familiären Verantwortung zu entsprechen, wurde den engsten Verwandten eines Erblassers die Möglichkeit eröffnet, ein Testament, durch das sie vom Erbe ausgeschlossen wurden, als pflichtwidrig anzufechten. Dies war jedoch nur unter dem Vorwand möglich, der Erblasser sei bei Errichtung des Testaments nicht zurechnungsfähig gewesen. Questo repertorio si pone come aggiornamento del volume Sarcofagi romani di Sardegna, scritto da Gennaro Pesce e pubblicato da L'Erma di Bretschneider nel 1957. La necessità di produrre un aggiornamento sulla materia deriva dai notevoli progressi compiuti durante gli ultimi decenni nello studio dei sarcofagi romani e dalla conseguente possibilità di interpretare questi manufatti in maniera sempre più accurata. Il panorama dei sarcofagi romani ritrovati nell'isola risulta ora alquanto dilatato rispetto all'opera di Gennaro Pesce, sia da un punto di vista numerico, sia nei più importanti riferimenti agli ambiti produttivi: se infatti nella prima edizione ad uno scarso numero di prodotti locali si affiancava una consistente quantità di esemplari importati esclusivamente da Roma o da Ostia, è attualmente possibile ampliare con decisione l'orizzonte di tali importazioni grazie all'identificazione di sarcofagi provenienti dall'Africa e dalla Campania, mentre le considerazioni sui pezzi importati da Ostia o prodotti localmente sono state spesso riviste e aggiornate. Riguardo alle produzioni locali emerge in particolare un interessante gruppo di esemplari che può essere attribuito a uno specifico contesto officinale, identificabile con precisione nel municipium di Carales.

Vor dem Hintergrund eines ausführlichen Vergleichs mit ausgewählten antiken Sturm- und Schiffbruchserzählungen untersucht Jens Börstinghaus die große lukanische Erzählung Apg 27,1-28,6, in der Paulus bis nach Malta gelangt. Besondere Bedeutung kommt dieser Erzählung deswegen zu, weil sie den Abschluß des gesamten lukanischen Doppelwerks fulminant vorbereitet. Lukas erweist sich dabei nicht gerade als begnadeter Literat, aber sehr wohl als engagierter und selbständiger frühchristlicher Schriftsteller, der seinen Adressaten mit dem durch alle Gefahren und Bedrängnisse hindurch nach Rom gelangenden Paulus eine attraktive Identifikationsfigur anbietet. Die vorrangig an der literarischen Motivik orientierte Studie leistet aber nicht nur einen Beitrag zum lukanischen Paulusbild, sondern darüber hinaus sowohl zur Frage nach der Gattung der Apostelgeschichte als auch zu dem noch immer umstrittenen Problem der sog.'Wir'- Stücke.

Seit der Renaissance wurde die Inanspruchnahme des Altertums zum Gegenstand politischer Auseinandersetzungen um die nationalen Werte der Kunst und der Literatur. Dies geschah nicht nur im Sinne der Verteidigung eines überzeitlichen Vorbildes, sondern auch als Moment der Abstoßung, des Widerstreits und der Konkurrenz, wie die Querelle des anciens et des modernes eindrücklich zeigt. Welchen ideologischen Konstruktionen unterliegt der Blick auf die Antike? Welches Interesse verbirgt sich hinter dem Studium antiker Kunst? Der Band vereint eine Reihe von exemplarischen Einzelanalysen, die von der Spätantike bis ins 20. Jahrhundert reichen und sich mit ausgewählten Ereignissen der Funktionalisierung und Instrumentalisierung des Antikebegriffs beschäftigen.
