Coherent deep ultraviolet (DUV) light sources are crucial for various applications such as nanolithography, biomedical imaging, and spectroscopy. DUV light sources can be generated by using conventional nonlinear optical crystals (NLOs). However, NLOs are limited by their bulky size, inadequate transparency at the DUV regime, and stringent phase-matching requirements for harmonic generation. Recently, dielectric metasurfaces support high Q -factor resonances and offer a promising approach for efficient harmonic generation at short wavelengths. In this study, we demonstrated a crystalline silicon (c-Si) metasurface simultaneously exciting modal phase-matched bound states in the continuum (BIC) resonance at the fundamental wavelength of 840 nm with a higher degree of freedom for precise control of the BIC resonance and a plasmonic resonance at the wavelength of 280 nm in the DUV to enhance third harmonic generation (THG). We experimentally achieved a Q -factor of ∼180 owing to the relatively large refractive index of the c-Si and the geometric symmetry breaking of the structure. We realized THG at a wavelength of 280 nm with a power of 14.5 nW by using a peak power density of 15 GW/cm 2 excitation. The measured THG power is 14 times higher than the state-of-the-art THG dielectric metasurfaces using the same peak power density in the DUV regime, and the maximum obtained THG power enhancement factor is up to 48. This approach relies on the significant third-order nonlinear susceptibility of c-Si, the interband plasmonic nature of the c-Si in the DUV, and the strong field confinement of BIC resonance to boost overall nonlinear conversion efficiency to 5.2 × 10 -6 % in the DUV regime. Our work shows the potential of c-Si BIC metasurfaces for developing efficient and ultracompact DUV light sources using high-efficacy nonlinear optical devices.

Metasurfaces are artificially structured surfaces able to control the properties of light at subwavelength scales. While, initially, they have been proposed as means to control classical optical fields, they are now emerging as nanoscale sources of quantum light, in particular of entangled photons with versatile properties. Geometric resonances in metasurfaces have been recently used to engineer the frequency spectrum of entangled photons, but the emission directivity was so far less studied. Here, we generate photon pairs via spontaneous parametric down conversion from a metasurface supporting a quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC) leading to remarkable emission directivities. The pair generation rate is enhanced 67 times compared to the case of an unpatterned film of the same thickness and material. At the wavelength of the quasi-BIC resonance, photons are mostly emitted backwards, while their partners, spectrally detuned by only 8 nm, are emitted forwards. This behavior demonstrates fine spectral splitting of entangled photons and their bi-directional emission, never before observed in nanoscale sources. We expect this work to be a starting point for the efficient demultiplexing of photons in nanoscale quantum optics.

We designed, fabricated and tested gallium phosphide (GaP) nano-waveguides for second harmonic generation (SHG). We demonstrate SHG in the visible range around 655 nm using modal phase matching. We observe phase matched SHG for different combinations of interacting modes by varying the widths of the waveguides and tuning the wavelength of the pump. We achieved a normalized internal SHG conversion efficiency of 0.4% W -1 cm -2 for a continuous-wave pump at wavelength of 1283.5 nm, the highest reported in the literature for a GaP waveguide. We also demonstrated temperature tuning of the SHG wavelength with a slope of 0.17 nm/ ° C. The presented results contribute to the development of integrated photonic platforms with efficient nonlinear wave-mixing processes for classical and quantum applications.

Resonant metasurfaces are an attractive platform for enhancing the nonlinear optical processes, such as second harmonic generation (SHG), since they can generate large local electromagnetic fields while relaxing the phase-matching requirements. Here, we demonstrate visible range, continuous wave (CW) SHG by combining the attractive material properties of gallium phosphide with high quality-factor photonic modes enabled by bound states in the continuum. We obtain efficiencies around 5e-5% W -1 when the system is pumped at 1200 nm wavelength with CW intensities of 1 kW/cm 2 . Moreover, we measure external efficiencies of 0.1% W -1 with pump intensities of only 10 MW/cm 2 for pulsed irradiation. This efficiency is higher than the values previously reported for dielectric metasurfaces, but achieved here with pump intensities that are two orders of magnitude lower. These results take metasurface-based SHG a step closer to practical applications.

Quantum dash (Q-Dash) passively mode-locked lasers (PMLLs) exhibit significant low frequency relative intensity noise (RIN), due to the high mode partition noise (MPN), which prevents the implementation of multilevel amplitude modulation formats such as PAM4. The authors demonstrate low frequency RIN mitigation by employing 8B/10B and Manchester encoding with PAM4 modulation format. These encoding techniques reduce the overlap between the modulation spectral content and the low-frequency RIN of the Q-dash devices, at the expense of increased overhead. The RIN of the 33.6 GHz free spectral range Q-dash PMLL was characterized, and the results obtained show very high levels of RIN from DC to 4 GHz, but low levels for higher frequencies. The performance improvement for 28 GBaud 8B/10B and Manchester encoded PAM4 signal has been demonstrated compared to the case when no encoding is used. Finally, the effect of RIN on the system performance was demonstrated by comparing the bit error rate (BER) performance of the PAM4 signaling obtained with an external cavity laser (ECL) to those obtained with Q-dash PMLL.

We use four-wave mixing to measure the correlation coefficient of comb tones in a quantum-dash mode-locked laser under passive and active locked regimes. We study the uncertainty in the measurement of the correlation coefficient of the proposed method.

We study and experimentally validate the vector theory of four-wave mixing (FWM) in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA). We use the vector theory of FWM to design a polarization insensitive all-optical wavelength converter, suitable for advanced modulation formats, using non-degenerate FWM in SOAs and parallelly polarized pumps. We demonstrate the wavelength conversion of polarization-multiplexed (PM)-QPSK, PM-16QAM and a Nyquist WDM super-channel modulated with PM-QPSK signals at a baud rate of 12.5 GBaud, with total data rates of 50 Gbps, 100 Gbps and 200 Gbps respectively.

We generate random numerical waveforms that mimic laser phase noise incorporating laser-resonance enhanced phase noise. The phase noise waveforms are employed in system simulators to estimate the resulting bit error rate penalties for differential quadrature phase shift keying signals. The results show that baudrate dependence of the bit error rate performance arises from laser-resonance phase noise. In addition, we show with supporting experimental results that the laser-resonance phase noise on the pumps in four-wave-mixing-based wavelength converters is responsible for large bit error rate floors.

We use the physics of four-wave mixing to study the decorrelation of two optical frequencies as they propagate through different fiber delays. The phase noise relationship between the four-wave mixing components is used to quantify and measure the correlation between the two optical frequencies using the correlation coefficient. We show the difference in the evolution of decorrelation between frequency-dependent and frequency-independent components of phase noise.

We study the effect of transfer of phase noise in different four wave mixing schemes using a coherent phase noise measurement technique. The nature of phase noise transfer from the pump to the generated wavelengths is shown to be independent of the type of phase noise (1 / f or white noise frequency components). We then propose a novel scheme using dual correlated pumps to prevent the increase in phase noise in the conjugate wavelengths. The proposed scheme is experimentally verified by the all-optical wavelength conversion of a DQPSK signal at 10.7 GBaud.
