Medicine ,Science - Abstract
New and rapid political and economic changes in Myanmar are increasing the pressures on the country's forests. Yet, little is known about the past and current condition of these forests and how fast they are declining. We mapped forest cover in Myanmar through a consortium of international organizations and environmental non-governmental groups, using freely-available public domain data and open source software tools. We used Landsat satellite imagery to assess the condition and spatial distribution of Myanmar's intact and degraded forests with special focus on changes in intact forest between 2002 and 2014. We found that forests cover 42,365,729 ha or 63% of Myanmar, making it one of the most forested countries in the region. However, severe logging, expanding plantations, and degradation pose increasing threats. Only 38% of the country's forests can be considered intact with canopy cover >80%. Between 2002 and 2014, intact forests declined at a rate of 0.94% annually, totaling more than 2 million ha forest loss. Losses can be extremely high locally and we identified 9 townships as forest conversion hotspots. We also delineated 13 large (>100,000 ha) and contiguous intact forest landscapes, which are dispersed across Myanmar. The Northern Forest Complex supports four of these landscapes, totaling over 6.1 million ha of intact forest, followed by the Southern Forest Complex with three landscapes, comprising 1.5 million ha. These remaining contiguous forest landscape should have high priority for protection. Our project demonstrates how open source data and software can be used to develop and share critical information on forests when such data are not readily available elsewhere. We provide all data, code, and outputs freely via the internet at (for scripts: https://bitbucket.org/rsbiodiv/; for the data: http://geonode.themimu.info/layers/geonode%3Amyan_lvl2_smoothed_dec2015_resamp).

Aotearoa New Zealand’s demographics are changing rapidly and, as a consequence, there is now greater diversity in the tertiary student population. This diversity is evident in the continuing growth of Māori and Pasifika student participation. Teacher education is increasingly emphasising social competencies and intercultural awareness. Online pedagogies based on sociocultural methods require openness to difference, understanding, and sharing; but it is a challenge to support productive learning communities that span diverse cultural backgrounds. This study began with a literature review, and then the eight dimensions in the cultural dimensions of learning framework (CDLF; Parrish & Linder-VanBerschot, 2010) survey were modified for use with online courses. The modified survey was trialled with 112 students and four lecturers in 11 online teacher education courses offered by a New Zealand university. Although respondents exhibited a wide range of choice in the survey, the participants were not sufficiently diverse to reveal any differences that might be attributed to culture. It was concluded that the CDLF could provide a useful stimulus to promote discussion amongst learners and teachers and that this discussion could raise awareness of the diversity of approaches to learning that could have a cultural basis. However, the lack of attention to indigenous worldviews and the limited evidence of reliability in the CDLF scales suggest that further empirical research of this survey instrument is unlikely to be worthwhile.

A failed marine, Judd can't believe his luck when Catriona falls for him. He lives in Minnesota; she's from Scotland. They work for the same company, they've messaged online for ages. But when they finally video chat, she turns out to be gorgeous. They may be thousands of miles apart, but they share a deep love of cycling and a passion for life. It's love at first sight. Judd throws his meager savings to the wind and flies across the Atlantic to meet Cat in person. Together, they plan a bike trip through the desolate Scottish Highlands. Perfect for cycling. Camping out. Being alone. But soon Judd discovers there's more to Cat than meets her alluring brown eyes. What Judd doesn't know is that someone is following them. Someone with sinister plans. Their lonely journey through the Highlands turns into a game of cat and mouse. Someone is making them ride for their lives. But who exactly is the hunter, and who is the hunted? Nordic crime - American style'Hey, Manny here. I'm a cop in Duluth, Minnesota. Vacation paradise in the summer, but some of the longest, coldest winters in the USA, with more snow and ice in one blizzard than most people see in a lifetime. And we all know what happens to people during long, cold winters. They die. They commit suicide or start fights out of pure boredom or because they're depressed, worried that the sun will never return. Or they get killed. If you want to make sure the person you've killed won't be found, just drop them under the ice of Lake Superior. Not much ever floats up from its depths again. Well, except this one morning...'When a dead woman is fished out of Lake Superior, Manny Jahnke is there to discover the baffling truth: The'woman'in the ice is biologically a man. Before he can learn more, the corpse sinks back into the water, pulling Manny's partner along with it. Both disappear under the ice, never to be seen again. Now Manny has a missing victim, a new partner he likes even less than the old one, and a case no one wants solved. Or so it seems. Manny grows obsessed with the'woman on ice'whose secrets prove to be as vast as the Great Lake itself - and whose enemies turn out to be powerful enough to keep those secrets hidden. Only one thing is certain: if Manny survives, he'll never be the same man again. Anthony Neil Smith is a Professor and the Chair of English at Southwest Minnesota State University. So, when we last met, I'd been fired, assaulted, chased by cops and criminals alike, and coerced into a political conspiracy. This time, I'm working for the next governor of the state of Minnesota. Alongside Joel. Sort of. He's still adjusting to the new me. But corruption spreads like fire and somebody has to douse the flames... Here's the thing. They say that knowledge is power. But nobody tells you that what you know can be the death of you.'The CASTLE DANGER saga continues in THE MENTAL STATES as Manny and Joel work together doing what they do best: getting into deep trouble. State Senator Andrew Marquette looks like a shoo-in for the governorship - appealing to votes across the political spectrum - and he's brought Manny and Joel aboard to help steer the ship. But when one of Marquette's most trusted advisors goes missing, our heroes can't help but play detective once again, in spite of everyone around them trying to block their path. Is there more to this disappearance than meets the eye?

Amidst Myanmar (Burma)'s political reform process the forest sector remains an important area awaiting democratisation. Forests historically covered over 50% of the countries' land area, and have been of major importance for both local livelihoods, the national economy and ‘ecosystem services’ such as biodiversity and catchment hydrology. The export timber trade has however played a decisive role in determining forest sector policy and indeed has exerted a significant influence on overall national politics since the colonial era began and continuing to the present day. Under the post-independence military dictatorship the timber trade involved ever more unsustainable plunder, particularly from the 1970s, rapidly degrading forests. But now reform of Myanmar's timber trade is on the national political agenda, reform which will be crucial for the Nation's transition towards an equitable and sustainable development trajectory. New legislative measures within consuming countries, including the EU, to challenge illegally sourced timber and wood product supplies have begun to exert a catalytic influence on Myanmar's forest policies, and converging with domestic civil society pressures have led in 2013 to the initiation of a formal ‘Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade’ (or FLEGT) bilateral process between the European Union and the Government of Myanmar. This paper presents an analysis of the nature of Myanmar's current timber trade and of the challenges and opportunities for reform, particularly in relation to the emerging FLEGT process. We argue that there are eight key aspects of Myanmar's timber trade overdue for democratic reform, which the FLEGT process puts into sharp relief: 1) resolution of ethnic conflicts primarily in upland forested areas, 2) reform of forest tenures; 3) a review of overall forest sector policies and the appropriate place of timber production; 4) reform of military era state timber institutions, 5) a return to silviculturally based sustainable forest management; 6) restructuring of the timber industry away from ‘crony’ domination; 7) measures to combat illegal logging and assure the rule of law; and 8) citizen participation in policy development and implementation. This ‘shopping list’ of democratic reforms implies a major and undoubtedly difficult process ahead, and success is far from certain. From 2013 promising initial progress has already begun on several of these areas. However, although the Government of Myanmar may give the international audience the impression that it is rapidly democratising, on the ground only limited substantive changes are yet experienced in rural areas, and resistance to reform persists amongst the military and their commercial partners. A spectrum of possible outcomes for forest sector reform may be foreseen, from mere token improvements on the dictatorship-era ‘business as usual’ to a thorough realisation of democratic aspirations. The outcome will be determined by the balance of power between civil society, public representatives, timber merchants particularly the powerful so-called ‘crony’ and proxy military business interests, and the intermediating powers of Government (including a significant rent-seeking ‘shadow state’), the EU, and the international markets that drive the demand for Burmese timber. The extent to which the FLEGT process can reinforce the wider democratisation process may be a decisive factor.

- Abstract
Billy Lafitte, former Deputy-Sheriff and motorcycle gang enforcer, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. For some of his enemies, that's still not enough punishment. Agents Colleen Hartle and Franklin Rome want Lafitte dead so bad, they've put a price on his head--eighteen grand to the first prisoner who takes him out. Gang leader Ri'Chess and Head Prison Guard Garner want to collect, and they don't mind who gets run over while they try--like inmate Bryce West, a pawn for whoever hurts him the most. Lafitte's church-going ex-mother-in-law believes in redemption... for everyone except Billy, perhaps. But she still believes a son has a right to see the truth about his father, so she brings his boy Ham for what she expects to be their final visit. When they all converge on a half-finished prison on the North Dakota prairie during a blizzard, something bad is bound to happen. The third chapter of the Billy Lafitte saga (following YELLOW MEDICINE and HOGDOGGIN') tests the limits of everyone whose life revolves around this man and all his deeds. 46. Fracturing Horizontal Transverse, Horizontal Longitudinal and Vertical Wells: Criteria for Decision

Transverse plane ,Seismology ,Geology - Abstract
Fracturing has become ubiquitous in the petroleum industry to the point that, at least in North America, almost all natural gas and the vast majority of oil wells are fractured. In fact there are more fracturing treatments than there are wells because of multiple treatments in many wells. Because of recent activities in shale gas, hydraulic fracturing of horizontal wells has become increasingly popular. However, not all reservoirs lend themselves to the same fracture and well architecture. Other than deviated wells which we do not recommend, to match proper well architecture (vertical versus horizontal) and number and size of treatments is a very important production engineering exercise. For gas wells one of the most important additional considerations is turbulence which happens in two places: the reservoir and then in the created fracture. This paper will discuss production from vertical, horizontal transverse and horizontal longitudinal fractured wells. Calculations of the incremental performance of each configuration are done for both oil and gas wells, using rigorous models for fractured well performance. There are physical and economic limits and criteria. For example, for gas wells in reservoirs above 0.5 md, there is an unacceptable reduction in the performance of each transverse fracture because of enhanced turbulence effects. In such case a vertical fractured well is preferable. There are also economic criteria for selecting which type of completion is the optimum choice. Very low permeability reservoirs while attractive in North America with its controlled costs, they may be very unattractive in other countries. We look at a range of reservoir and proppant pack permeabilities and discuss the optimization of fracture geometry. The paper not only delineates areas of indicated application of each well completion but it highlights the importance of considering the hydraulic fracturing process from the very start of wellbore planning. The processes involved in planning a wellbore for efficient decision making and maximum flexibility of choice are also described.

47. How to Decide Between Horizontal Transverse, Horizontal Longitudinal and Vertical Fractured Completion

Transverse plane ,Geometry ,Geology - Abstract
Augmented by the recent activities in shale gas, hydraulic fracturing of horizontal wells has become increasingly popular, although the technology has existed for over 20 years. The success in shale gas activities and advances in completion technology may have generated the false impression that fractured horizontal wells may be successfully applied to almost any formation. Although the very low-permeability shale gas formations in the cost-controlled environment of North America may have justifiably made multiple-fractured horizontal wells the completion of choice, many do not realize that there are circumstances where a simple vertical fractured well may significantly outperform a fractured horizontal well. Because it is usually too late to change completion type once the wellbore has been drilled, it is vital that the selection of type of fractured completion to be used is considered during initial well and field development planning. This paper will discuss the production mechanisms from horizontal transverse, horizontal longitudinal and vertical fractured wellbores. Calculations of the incremental performance of each configuration are done for both oil and gas wells. There are physical and economic limits and criteria. For example, for gas wells in reservoirs above 0.5 md, there is an unacceptable reduction in the performance of each transverse fracture because of enhanced turbulence effects. There are also economic criteria for selecting which type of completion is the optimum choice. Hydraulic fracturing is a well-established completion technique, most notably in the tight and unconventional gas reservoirs of North America. Although still not nearly as prevalent, fracturing is the completion method of choice throughout the world, providing unparalleled contact between the reservoir and the wellbore. Placing a fracture means that it takes less energy to move the oil or gas from the reservoir to the wellbore. Flow rates are increased dramatically and reservoirs can be depleted to significantly lower pressures prior to abandonment. The process is accomplished by physically breaking the formation apart with extreme pressure and then placing a highly conductive and crush-resistant material ("proppant") inside the fracture. Subsequently, oil and gas will flow through the "propped" fracture and into the wellbore. Because the propping material has a permeability that is orders of magnitude greater than the formation, virtually all flow passes from the reservoir into the fracture and then along the fracture into the well. The hydraulic fracture length can reach significant distances into the formation, providing the inflow area that is essential to the production of gas from tight and unconventional formations, although remarkable results can also be achieved from medium- and high-permeability reservoirs.Although fracturing is often perceived as a technique for low-permeability reservoirs or remediation of mature fields, the best results are achieved from the best wells. One 100-md oil reservoir, effectively fractured, will produce the equivalent of 20 to 30 massive fracture treatments in 1-md reservoirs - and this factor increases to 50 to 70 for gas wells, due to the mitigation of turbulence within the reservoir. This paper is concerned with the processes of candidate selection, treatment design and treatment evaluation, and in particular with the best practices that help optimise these procedures, including measurements that make fracturing more successful, wellbore design, treatment design techniques and materials selection. Finally, the paper will consider how these processes may subsequently evolve.

With the increasing need for highly cost-effective well production enhancement applications, acid stimulation is becoming increasingly popular. To be successful, acidizing procedures require distribution of stimulation fluids across and within the desired treatment interval. Historically, this has been approached with mechanical placement or chemical diversion of treatment fluids. Method selection can be crucial to treatment success – and an increasing number of options exist – each with its own set of limitations and uncertainties. Preferences and success vary for matrix and fracture acidizing – in vertical and deviated wellbores, in sandstones and carbonates and in cased and perforated, gravel packed, and openhole completions. Method selection and implementation can be daunting but greatly rewarding – calling for creativity and field experimentation. This paper focuses on the important role of acid placement and diversion, and the types, purposes, benefits and pitfalls of the methods currently in practice. The importance of treatment placement was evident and recognized in the earliest acid treatments conducted in the late 19th century. Although this need has been recognized since the dawn of acidizing, at no point in its history has a diversion method found universal reliability and acceptance. Insufficient interval coverage is perhaps still the most common reason why acid jobs often fail to meet expectations. A well-conceived treatment in all other aspects of design (damage assessment, selection of fluids and additives, and volumes) can count for nothing if the treatment does not enter or cover those portions of the interval with the greatest need of stimulation.Since the first commercial acid treatments in the 1930s, mechanical placement has evolved from crude rubber "packers" to advanced coiled tubing technologies. Chemical and particulate diverters have evolved from chicken feed to specialized chemical systems, including self-diverting fluids. With chemical diversion, different methods have come into and fallen out of favor – replaced by new ideas, or those forgotten and subsequently revived.Within its historical perspective, this paper discusses present-day acid placement and diversion methods, their best applications and their limitations – with a view and emphasis on industry needs and direction for the future.
