Urban and metropolitan colleges and universities can play an important role in innovative, equitable community revitalization. This is especially true for universities that also function as anchor institutions; there is both a challenge and an opportunity for such urban anchors to conduct their work in a manner that engages the community proximate to campus and improves the lives of its residents. This paper presents the Promise Parent Leadership Academy(PPLA) and Clemente Veterans' Initiative (CVI) Newark as two examples of how an urban, postsecondary anchor institution can establish and nurture hyperlocal initiatives to improve outcomes for underserved residents. PPLA and CVI Newark, established in 2017 and 2019,respectively, have emerged as novel, impactful, and scalable initiatives that move beyond the typical one-way flow of intellectual capital generated within the confines of a university. Instead, PPLA and CVI Newark actively engage community members in meaningful, intellectually rigorous work that adds value to the institution, program participants, and greater Newark. Data from program evaluations indicate that participants of both programs--most of whom are adults of color from low-income households--gain personal and professional skills that bolster their confidence, critical thinking, and quality of life. A modified Blalock–Taussig shunt (mBTS) is often employed to provide pulmonary blood flow in neonates that are born with cyanotic congenital heart defects. However, acute shunt thrombosis can occur in the postoperative period, resulting in profound cyanosis. In this case report, we describe the utility of computed tomographic angiography (CTA) in the management of a neonate with extreme cyanosis after placement of a mBTS while on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Using CTA, several small clots were identified in the shunt as well as stenosis of the left pulmonary artery; neither of which were identified with echocardiography. The CTA allowed for quick identification of the disorder and helped direct prompt surgical intervention.

This article represents the second of two on the subject of the culture wars, especially in its online expression. The first (Anthony, 2020) analyzed problematic aspects of "blue tribe" consciousness (roughly, the political left) and how those issues are being influenced by the internet, education systems and globalization; as well as civilizational and psycho-spiritual dynamics. This second article takes a broader perspective, examining both blue and red (roughly, the political right) tribes, and argues that solutions to the broader problems surrounding the culture wars and its tribalism are unlikely to work successfully without honest introspection. To this end, "shadow" work employing processes and insights by introspective psychologists like Carl Jung and mindfulness practitioners Leonard Jacobson and Eckhart Tolle may be helpful, especially if deployed along with other systemic interventions. Anthony's (2007, 2010) Harmonic Circles process is briefly described as a specific healing process. Conversely, processes based only around technological intervention and regulation of behaviour are unlikely to work by themselves, as they typically do not address deeper psycho-spiritual drivers. It is argued that introspection and shadow work may help facilitate a more effective dialogue with "the other" by neutralizing judgmental projections which tend to dehumanize tribal opponents, while encouraging a more honest appraisal of sources of conflict which lie within one's own group. In this article I develop a case for a theory of intelligence incorporating transpersonal dimensions, namely integrated intelligence. Some recent expanded theories of intelligence move into concepts like creativity, wisdom, and emotional intelligence. Yet they remain embedded within mainstream intelligence theory and its reductionist and materialist presuppositions. Although various theorists in consciousness theory have developed transpersonal models that are beginning to be discussed in some mainstream circles, mainstream intelligence theory is yet to address the broader implications of this. Recent changes in the global economy and the needs of populations have created a need for an expanded theory of intelligence, and more intuitive thinking.
