The development of narrow updrafts or jetlike features in the vertical motion field (VMF) over the leading edge of a surface frontal zone is examined on the basis of model simulations, summarizing and clarifying the results presented by Keyser and Anthes (1982) and responding to critical remarks by Mak and Bannon (1984). Typical velocity and potential-temperature cross sections are shown, and it is concluded that the inclusion of generally parameterized planetary-boundary-layer (PBL) physics in the model has a significant effect on the VMF, suggesting that frictional processes alone (without latent heating) can explain the formation of jetlike frontal updrafts. In a reply by Mak and Bannon it is argued that the increased strength of the VMF in models including PBL physics is not significant, whereas other models show that the VMF can be significantly strengthened and narrowed by condensational heating alone.

A numerical study was performed of a severe weather event (tornado) which occurred on May 10, 1973 in the Ohio region. The situation was modeled with a primitive equation mesoscale dynamic formulation. Account was taken of precipitation, the planetary boundary layer parameters as bulk quantities, the vertical pressure gradient, and lateral boundary conditions based on radiosonde data. Two 12-hr simulations, adiabatic and nondivergent, respectively, were analyzed for relationships between upper and lower level jets. In the adiabatic formulation, a transverse circulation with a low level jet formed at the exit region of the upper level jet. The nondivergent situation led to similar, but weaker, phenomena. Both forms suggest that indirect circulation in the exit zone of an upper level jet is strongly influenced by the initial structure of the jet.

This paper describes the effects of condensation and evaporation on mesoscale frontal circulations in a two-dimensional numerical model. Utilizing an explicit scheme for the prediction of water vapor, cloud water and rainwater, the model is used to investigate the interactions between convection and the larger-scale environment. The model results are qualitatively compared with results of theoretical and observational studies, including those from the recent Severe Environmental Storms and Mesoscale Experiment-Atmospheric Variability Experiment (SESAME-AVE). Three major differences are observed in a comparison of the moist and dry simulations: (1) The speed of the upper- and lower-level jets was significantly higher in the moist case, (2) The intensity of the ageostrophic circulations in the moist simulation was much stronger, (3) The vertical velocity field in the moist case was characterized by a banded structure not present in the dry case.

Mesoscale heat and moisture budget calculations from the April 10-11 AVE-SESAME central U.S. region are calculated in order to diagnose the effect of midlatitude organized convection on its environment. When averaged over an area greater than the observational scale, the noise levels of 5 C/day for the heat budget and 2 g/kg per day for the moisture budget are considerably reduced. The credibility of such area-averaged budget results is indicated by the general agreement obtained between the observed rainfall rate and the vertically integrated heat sources and moisture sinks. The vertical convective heating that is diagnosed from this organized midlatitude convection differs significantly from tropical structures diagnosed on much larger temporal and spatial scales. A time lag of several hours between the moisture convergence and rainfall rate is noted.

Observing system simulation experiments are used to investigate the accuracy of diagnostic heat and moisture budgets which employ the AVE-SESAME 1979 data. The time-including, four-dimensional data set of a mesoscale model is used to simulate rawinsonde observations from AVE-SESAME 1979. The 5 C/day (heat budget) and 2 g/kg per day (moisture budget) magnitudes of error obtained indicate difficulties in the diagnosis of the heating rate in weak convective systems. The influences exerted by observational frequency, objective analysis, observational density, vertical interpolation, and observational errors on the budget are also studied, and it is found that the temporal and spatial resolution of the SESAME regional network is marginal for diagnosing convective effects on a horizontal time scale of 550 x 550 km.

A one-dimensional, planetary boundary layer (PBL) model is presented and verified using April 10, 1979 SESAME data. The model contains two modules to account for two different regimes of turbulent mixing. Separate parameterizations are made for stable and unstable conditions, with a predictive slab model for surface temperature. Atmospheric variables in the surface layer are calculated with a prognostic model, with moisture included in the coupled surface/PBL modeling. Sensitivity tests are performed for factors such as moisture availability, albedo, surface roughness, and thermal capacity, and a 24 hr simulation is summarized for day and night conditions. The comparison with the SESAME data comprises three hour intervals, using a time-dependent geostrophic wind. Close correlations were found with daytime conditions, but not in nighttime thermal structure, while the turbulence was faithfully predicted. Both geostrophic flow and surface characteristics were shown to have significant effects on the model predictions

A mesoscale model is employed for predicting two severe weather events observed during thy 1979 SESAME field programs. Particular attention is given to the development and decay of a low-level jet, to the formation of a mesoscale convective complex (MCC) and its modification of lower- and upper-level circulation, to the formation of mesoscale regions of heavy precipitation, the intensification of surface warm and cold fronts, the formation of drylines, dynamic coupling of upper- and low-level jets, the formation of a mountain wave, and the formation and maintenance of capping inversions. A summary of the physics and parameters of a tornado outbreak and a heavy precipitation event are given for a simple bulk-PBL formulation with no heating. A ten-layer model was demonstrated to be sufficient for generating and maintaining distinct vertical gradients of temperature, moisture, and wind across low-level inversions.

Mixed-layer models have been used to simulate low-level flows under a variety of situations, including flow over complex terrain and in the vicinity of coastal zones. The advantage of mixed-layer models compared to multilevel models is their simplicity and minimal computational requirements. A disadvantage is that the atmosphere above the mixed layer is not modeled explicitly and approximations pertaining to this layer become necessary. This paper examines five approximations for treating this upper layer for a simple sea-breeze circulation. Approximating the flow immediately above the mixed-layer height h by the mixed-layer velocity and using this velocity to advect potential temperature above h gives a better simulation of the sea breeze than the approximation used by Anthes et al. (1980), which neglected horizontal advection at this level.

Attention is given to varying the initial conditions in the Penn State three-dimensional numerical model in the development of the low-level jet over the Ohio Valley during the 10 May 1973 severe weather event. The results of two forecasts are summarized: (1) the control forecast which interpolated the National Meteorological Center's operational analysis to the mesoscale model grid; and (2) modifying the control forecast by inserting artificial soundings and surface observations. Enhancements are made on the basis of subsynoptic scale analyses by Uccellini and surface data. The results indicate that the low-level jet was in part induced by pressure changes associated with deceleration and horizontal divergence of air in the exit region of the upper-level jet. The enhancement of the initial moisture field using surface reports of clouds and precipitation has a substantial effect on precipitation.

Using the special data set collected in Project SESAME (1979), an analysis and modeling efforts to test the hypothesis that a unique combination of terrain, boundary layer processes, and synoptic-scale circulations result in a preferred region of latent instability that determines the location of severe thunderstorm outbreaks are described. Because the relevant circulations are large scale, it is hypothesized that a model that contains the necessary physics will be able to predict the location of these severe storms at least 24 h in advance. Through detailed analysis of the SESAME data set and a series of numerical forecasts, the above hypothesis is being tested and it is hoped that quantitative understanding of the processes leading to the development of severe thunderstorms in the midwestern United States will be gained.

Three time histories of wind profiles in thunderstorm gust fronts at Cape Kennedy and three at Oklahoma City are analyzed. Wind profiles at maximum wind strength below 100 m follow logarithmic laws, so that winds above the surface layer can be estimated from surface winds once the roughness length is known. A statistical analysis of 81 cases of surface winds during thunderstorms at Tampa revealed no predictor with skill to predict the time of maximum gust. Some 34% of the variance of the strength of the gust is accounted for by a stability index and surface wind prior to the gust; the regression equations for these variables are given. The coherence between microscale wind speed variations at the different levels has the same proportions as in non-thunderstorm cases.
