Antarctic sea ice is an important part of the Earth's atmospheric system, and satellite remote sensing is an important technology for observing Antarctic sea ice. Whether Chinese Haiyang-2B (HY-2B) satellite altimeter data could be used to estimate sea ice freeboard and provide alternative Antarctic sea ice thickness information with a high precision and long time series, as other radar altimetry satellites can, needs further investigation. This paper proposed an algorithm to discriminate leads and then retrieve sea ice freeboard and thickness from HY-2B radar altimeter data. We first collected the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ice surface temperature (IST) product from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to extract leads from the Antarctic waters and verified their accuracy through Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar images. Second, a surface classification decision tree was generated for HY-2B satellite altimeter measurements of the Antarctic waters to extract leads and calculate local sea surface heights. We then estimated the Antarctic sea ice freeboard and thickness based on local sea surface heights and the static equilibrium equation. Finally, the retrieved HY-2B Antarctic sea ice thickness was compared with the CryoSat-2 sea ice thickness and the Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate (ASPeCt) ship-based observed sea ice thickness. The results indicate that our classification decision tree constructed for HY-2B satellite altimeter measurements was reasonable, and the root mean square error of the obtained sea ice thickness compared to the ship measurements was 0.62 m. The proposed sea ice thickness algorithm for the HY-2B radar satellite fills a gap in this application domain for the HY-series satellites and can be a complement to existing Antarctic sea ice thickness products; this algorithm could provide long-time-series and large-scale sea ice thickness data that contribute to research on global climate change. The Ross Sea has been the site of extensive investigations since the earliest days of polar exploration. The International Geophysical Year of 1957-58 enhanced research activities with the establishment of scientific stations and the collection of oceanographic observations in the area. While many features of its oceanography, ecology, physics, glaciology, geology, and biogeochemistry are known, recent advances provide new insights into its structure and function, as well as into its relationship to global climate. We present a comprehensive review of the advances of understanding the main processes occurring in the area, such as the formation of dense shelf water and the production of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), as well as the main drivers (at both large and local scales) of local dynamics and water mass variability. We also summarize the main modeling applications, which are still limited and need to be improved using high-resolution models and, locally, limited-area models to explain processes driven mainly by thermodynamics and water-mass transformations. The Ross Sea forms the most saline AABW due to the activity of two polynyas in the western sector. A salinity gradient occurs on the shelf, with fresh Low Salinity Shelf Waters concentrated in the eastern Ross Sea, which is influenced by the inflow of fresh water from the Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas. This freshwater inflow was thought to be the cause of a multi-decadal freshening of the High Salinity Shelf Water, precursor to the AABW, although a rebound in salinity in the Ross Sea has been observed since 2014. Krill (Euphausia superba) catch is currently the most relevant fishery industry in Antarctic waters. This resource is a keystone species in the Antarctic food web, sustaining the contribution to the trophic ecology of many invertebrate and vertebrate species. To catch krill, part of the fleet in this fishery uses large mid-water nets that also retain a diversity of other organisms like plankton, meroplankton, and fish species as bycatch. Therefore, it is necessary to understand and evaluate the magnitude of this incidental catch, as well as the potential interactions between krill fishing gear with seabirds and mammals. To estimate the composition and extent of bycatch for this fishery included 784 samples of 25 kg and an equal number of 1 kg sub-samples obtained from Antarctic krill catches in Subarea 48, between years 2012 and 2016. A total of 15 fish species were identified along with the record of five other taxa and other unidentified specimens. The most relevant fish species bycaught by weight were mackerel icefish Champsocephalus gunnari, South Georgia icefish Pseudochaenichthys georgianus, and painted notie Lepidonotothen larseni. Additionally, 20 interactions with seabirds and nine interactions with Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) were registered. Antarctic minke whales Balaenoptera bonaerensis are rorquals that migrate to Antarctic waters to forage during the austral summer. Because the species frequents the edges of ice packs in summer, the potential impact of long-term physical environmental changes poses serious conservation concerns. Condition along the ice edge vary regionally, sometimes forming small ice free areas (ice gaps), and little is known about whale movement patterns associated with these small-scale variations in the physical environment. In this study, six minke whales were tracked for an average of 31 days (range 4–77 days) from January to March of 2016 and 2017 between 60° E and 140° E above and off the continental shelf. The tracking data of five animals were fitted to a Bayesian hierarchical switching state-space model assembled from ARGOS data filters to estimate behavioral states. Results show that Antarctic minke whales are likely to search for ice gaps areas and remain there for extended periods until the surrounding ice melts, rather than stay at krill rich shelf breaks or areas with high chlorophyll-a concentration. When no ice gaps were nearby, the whales were likely to move eastward along highly concentrated ice packs to find a gap. In this work, we describe a new sponge species belonging to the genus Coelosphaera Thomson, 1873. It was collected during an Argentinean Summer Antarctic Research Cruise onboard the Research Vessel "Puerto Deseado" in March 2014, near South Orkney Islands (Antarctica), 60° 53′ S 42° 35′ W, 487-m depth. Coelosphaera (Coelosphaera) koltuni sp. nov. is a globular, fistular and hollow-shaped sponge, with significantly larger megascleres (almost twice the length) than other Antarctic and New Zealand Coelosphaera species. Antarctic waters are the largest almost untapped diversified resource of our planet. Molecular resources for Antarctic organisms are very limited and mostly represented by sequences used for species genotyping. In this study, we present the first transcriptome for the copepod Rhincalanus gigas, one of the predominant zooplankton species of Antarctic waters. This transcriptome represents also the first molecular resource for an eucalanoid copepod. The transcriptome is of high quality and completeness. The presence of three predicted genes encoding antifreeze proteins and gene duplication within the glutathione metabolism pathway are suggested as possible adaptations to cope with this harsh environment. The R. gigas transcriptome represents a powerful new resource for investigating the molecular basis associated with polar biological processes and ecology.

As a pristine continent, Antarctica provides a good opportunity to study the spatial transport and temporal accumulation of environmental contaminants and the impacts of anthropogenic activities, both of which have given rise to ongoing public concern. In this research, an approach of coupling aquatic time-integrated passive sampling with chemical analysis and bioassays was used to assess pollution by hydrophobic organic contaminants in Antarctic waters. Passive samplers were deployed in waters of Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica, and their extracts were used for chemical analyses of sixty-six hydrophobic organic contaminants belonging to five groups [organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs), phthalic acid esters (PAEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)] and in vitro bioassays for endocrine disruption and genotoxicity. In total, twenty pollutants (six PFRs, one PAE, two PAHs, six OCPs, and five PCBs) were quantified, and six PFRs had concentrations that ranged from ND (not detected) to 44.37 ng L −1 in Antarctic waters. The concentrations detected in the waters were generally low and insufficient to have significant in vitro endocrine disruption potential or genotoxicity. The source and transport pathways of PFRs and PAE in Fildes Peninsula were studied, and multiple local sources (wastewater, air traffic, research stations, and animal feces) for different PFRs were proposed. A spatial and temporal analysis showed slight changes in the exposure of OCPs and PCBs in Antarctic waters. Furthermore, a comparison among a variety of Antarctic water sampling cases revealed that passive sampling can be a tool for aquatic time-integrated investigations in polar regions. In 2010–2011, three projects combined to characterize the temporal and spatial distributions of Modified Circumpolar Deep Water (MCDW) in the Ross Sea using icebreaker-based sampling, gliders, instrumented seals, and hindcasts from a numerical circulation model. The fieldwork clearly identified MCDW throughout the Ross Sea, and the data were used to determine its influence on potential heat and nutrient inputs and biotic distributions. Furthermore, the numerical simulations confirm its apparent trajectory and location. Substantial small-scale variability in oceanographic and biological distributions suggests that such variability may play an important role in biogeochemical cycles. Data from the three projects provide a view of hydrographic variability in the Ross Sea that is impossible to obtain using traditional sampling. Multiplatform investigations are promising approaches to future polar experiments where logistical considerations are of paramount importance.

During the Austral summer 2009 we studied three areas surrounding the Antarctic Peninsula: the Bellingshausen Sea, the Bransfield Strait and the Weddell Sea. We aimed to investigate, whether viruses or protists were the main agents inducing prokaryotic mortality rates, and the sensitivity to temperature of prokaryotic heterotrophic production and mortality based on the activation energy (Ea) for each process. Seawater samples were taken at seven depths (0.1-100 m) to quantify viruses, prokaryotes and protists abundances, and heterotrophic prokaryotic production (PHP). Viral lytic production, lysogeny, and mortality rates of prokaryotes due to viruses and protists were estimated at surface (0.1-1 m) and at the Deep Fluorescence Maximum (DFM, 12-55 m) at eight representative stations of the three areas. The average viral lytic production ranged from 1.0 ± 0.3 × 107 viruses ml-1 d-1 in the Bellingshausen Sea to1.3 ± 0.7 × 107 viruses ml-1 d-1 in the Bransfield Strait, while lysogeny, when detectable, recorded the lowest value in the Bellingshausen Sea (0.05 ± 0.05 × 107 viruses ml-1 d-1) and the highest in the Weddell Sea (4.3 ± 3.5 × 107 viruses ml-1 d-1). Average mortality rates due to viruses ranged from 9.7 ± 6.1 × 104 cells ml-1 d-1 in the Weddell Sea to 14.3 ± 4.0 × 104 cells ml-1 d-1 in the Bellingshausen Sea, and were higher than averaged grazing rates in the Weddell Sea (5.9 ± 1.1 × 104 cells ml-1 d-1) and in the Bellingshausen Sea (6.8 ± 0.9 × 104 cells ml-1 d-1). The highest impact on prokaryotes by viruses and main differences between viral and protists activities were observed in surface samples: 17.8 ± 6.8 × 104 cells ml-1 d-1 and 6.5 ± 3.9 × 104 cells ml-1 d-1 in the Weddell Sea; 22.1 ± 9.6 × 104 cells ml-1 d-1 and 11.6 ± 1.4 × 104 cells ml-1 d-1 in the Bransfield Strait; and 16.1 ± 5.7 × 104 cells ml-1 d-1 and 7.9 ± 2.6 × 104 cells ml-1 d-1 in the Bellingshausen Sea, respectively. Furthermore, the rate of lysed cells and PHP showed higher sensitivity to temperature than grazing rates by protists. We conclude that viruses were more important mortality agents than protists mainly in surface waters and that viral activity has a higher sensitivity to temperature than grazing rates. This suggests a reduction of the carbon transferred through the microbial food-web that could have implications in the biogeochemical cycles in a future warmer ocean scenario. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fifty-four specimens of pycnogonids belonging to twenty-two species, eight genera and six families were collected with a rocky dredge during the cruise Gebrap-96 in the central basin of Bransfield Strait, from depths between 647 and 1592 m. The richest station in terms of abundance and biomass was DR6 (south of Livingston Island), which was also the shallowest one; at this relatively shallow depth food is more available than in deeper waters. The families Nymphonidae and Colossendeidae had the same number of specimens (21 specimens; 39% abundance each). The most abundant species were Nymphon villosum and N. proximum. Pallenopsis buphthalmus was collected for only the third time. The collections increased the geographical distribution of three species and the depth range of six species. The volcanic structures sampled were inactive during 1996, since none of the specimens showed signs of hydrothermal phenomena. This collection was typically representative of the west Antarctic benthic zone.

Recent photo-identification and genetic studies have identified at least five discrete breeding populations in Australia and Oceania: western Australia (D), eastern Australia (E (i)), New Caledonia (E (ii)), Tonga (E (iii)), French Polynesia and the Cook Islands (F). Also evident are low levels of intermingling among breeding populations consistent with the degree of genetic differentiation. Photo-identification has confirmed linkages between Area V feeding areas and eastern Australia breeding grounds and one genotype match has been reported between Area V feeding areas and Oceania breeding grounds. Recent abundance estimates show strong increases in the eastern Australian population, and some recovery in the New Caledonia and Tonga populations, but with little evidence of recovery at other known Oceania breeding grounds or New Zealand. Studies to date have provided no conclusive evidence of the migratory destination of humpback whales passing through New Zealand waters en route between Antarctic feeding areas and tropical breeding grounds. Photo-identification comparisons were undertaken between humpback whale fluke catalogues from eastern Australia (EA, 1315), Oceania east (OE, 513), Oceania west (OW, 166) and New Zealand (NZ, 13). Five matches were found between OE/OW, four matches between OW/EA and three matches between NZ/EA. The data are used to investigate and discuss the migratory destination and breeding ground migratory interchange of humpback whales travelling through New Zealand waters. The data confirm that humpback whales with site fidelity to eastern Australia migrate past New Zealand including through the Cook Strait and Foveaux Strait. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Up until now, only the floristic composition of large phytoplankton species has been studied in the Southern Ocean immediately south of New Zealand. To fill the gaps in our knowledge of the Antarctic phytoplankton flora and biomass, in relation to physical and chemical environments, New Zealand's IPY project sampled water between New Zealand and Antarctica and into the Ross Sea in late summer. Near surface phytoplankton samples, collected between New Zealand and Antarctica, and vertical stations, between Scott Island and the Ross Sea ice shelf, allowed us to contrast the flora and biomass in the Ross Sea/Antarctic and Subantarctic waters. Spatially, diatoms were found to be more diverse in both shelf and offshore Antarctic than in Subantarctic waters. Over the Ross Sea shelf, the pennate diatom, Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, and a colonial prymnesiophyte, Phaeocystis antarctica, dominated both numerically and in biomass, contributing to greatest levels of chlorophyll a and cell carbon biomass over the shelf. In both shelf and Antarctic waters, heterotrophic taxa accounted for a greater proportion of total dinoflagellate cell carbon (avg. 95.4 and 91.9 %, respectively) than autotrophic, while in the Subantarctic waters, the reverse was true (avg. 48.6 %). A small number of potentially harmful dinoflagellates, Karenia and Karlodinium spp., were found for the first time in the New Zealand sector of the Southern Ocean. This study represents the first thorough description of the spatial variation of the floristic composition and biomass of phytoplankton in relation to physical and chemical properties, from New Zealand to Antarctica. The interannual variability of net community production (NCP) and air-sea CO2 flux in a naturally iron fertilized and productive area of the Southern Ocean (Kerguelen plateau) was investigated using a 1D biogeochemical model driven by satellite chlorophyll, sea surface temperature and wind speed data for the 1997–2007 period. The model simulates the low fCO2 and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) measured during summers 2004–05, 2005–06, 2006–07 and the high NCP derived from a seasonal carbon budget in the surface waters of these blooms. Although satellite data show high interannual variability in the dynamics and magnitude of the bloom during the 1997–2007 decade, the simulated interannual variability of the NCP was only ± 14%. This unexpected result could be due to the combined effect of both the duration and the start date of the bloom, the latter determining the depth of the mixed layer used to compute the NCP. In the productive area, the interannual variability of air-sea CO2 flux (± 13%) was not only driven by the biological effect but also by the solubility effect. Geostrophic volume transport based on hydrographic data is estimated across two transects that are covered south of Madagascar in the region of the sub-tropical and sub-Antarctic waters as a part of the Indian Pilot Expedition to the Southern Ocean on board ORV Sagar Kanya during austral summer 2004. Strong density current shears are encountered in the study area suggesting high potential for the generation of mesoscale eddies. Volume transports with reversing directions are encountered especially in the depth range of 0-1000 m between Madagascar and around Sub- Tropical Convergence (STC) and they reach maximum values of 40 and 80 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3 s-1) directed towards southeast and east across tracks 1 and 2 respectively. Such reversing flows, however, are not much seen in the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic waters. The sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) field in the southwestern Indian Ocean based on satellite altimetry during January-February 2004 further shows that relatively high meso-scale variability associated with the regions of larger volume transports promotes meandering of East Madagascar current (EMC) and combined Agulhas return current (ARC)/Antarctic circumpolar current (ACC) systems from where eddies are likely to shed out with a developmental tendency of clockwise (anti-clockwise) rotations on right (left) side of these current streams. A positive correlation between SSHA and mixed layer depth (MLD) is confined to the sub-tropical waters, suggesting the influence of eddies on the dynamics of MLD in the study area. Misophrioid copepods are reported for the first time from Antarctic waters. A species of each of the genera Misophriopsis and Misophriella is described from hyperbenthic layers of the continental shelf of the eastern Weddell Sea. The genus Misophria is also reported from these waters. Misophriopsis australis sp. nov. is the fifth representative of this widely distributed genus, previously reported from the North Atlantic, the China Sea, and both NW and NE quadrants of the Pacific Ocean. Misophriella schminkei sp. nov. is the second representative of the genus, known to date only from a single female caught in North Atlantic bathyal depths. Traces of subdivisions on antennary exopodal segments of the latter species suggest that the first segment may be a triple segment, while the second and terminal segments may be double segments. In addition, the mandibular exopod of this taxon indicates that a six-segmented ramus with setal formula 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2 may represent the ground pattern in Copepoda. The presence of parts of a cyclopinid copepod in the gut of M. schminkei sp. nov. indicates that this species may be carnivorous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of ice-ocean interaction on the Southern Ocean is expected to intensify in the future. However, its influence on phytoplankton community composition remains an open question. The Antarctic Peninsula fjords offer an ideal system to understand the effect of ice-ocean forcing on phytoplankton community, providing an extreme in the spatial gradient from the glacio-marine boundary to the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) continental shelf. During two cruises conducted in December 2015 and April 2016 in Andvord Bay, we found that glacial meltwater input altered surface salinity, promoting shallow mixed layers, and enriched surface waters in dissolved iron and nitrate. The three major groups of phytoplankton fueled by glacial input were: cryptophytes, diatoms, and a group of unidentified small flagellates. Prasinophytes and dinoflagellates were also present, in lower concentrations. In December, cryptophytes dominated the phytoplankton community and were correlated with relatively warmer temperatures in the surface layer; in addition, contrary to our hypothesis, no diatom bloom was observed in the fjord in spite of dissolved iron concentration >1 nM. By April, after the growth season, the overall phytoplankton abundance had decreased by an order of magnitude. Phytoplankton, in particular diatoms, were then limited by daytime length despite abundant macro-nutrient and iron concentrations. Mixed flagellates emerged as the dominant group during April due to the decline of other major taxa. Deep-learning algorithms for predicting the abundance of each major phytoplankton group captured the effects of these environmental factors on the phytoplankton community. Our results show that the fjord has relatively high phytoplankton biomass combined with high macro- and trace nutrient concentrations when compared to the broader WAP region. Based on this study, we confirm that flagellates can be the dominant taxon in Antarctic nearshore waters and we propose that iron concentration alone is insufficient to predict diatom growth. Furthermore, marine terminating glaciers in the WAP can enrich surface waters with nitrate even if the main fjord circulation is not driven by glacier meltwater discharge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Southern Ocean ecosystem is thought to be experiencing a long-term increase in Salpa thompsoni. Uncertainty surrounds the environmental drivers behind variable S. thompsoni abundances, particularly within the East Antarctic region. In this study, S. thompsoni populations were sampled in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean, as part of the January–February 2016 Kerguelen Axis voyage. These recent data were compared against historical density records in the broader Kerguelen Plateau region from voyages during 1985–2006. Results show that 2016 maximum S. thompsoni densities across the Kerguelen Plateau were higher, and more southerly located, than those previously sampled in the area. The highest 2016 S. thompsoni abundances exceeded 2500 individuals 1000 m-3 and were located between the Southern Boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and the Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current Front. The life-stage composition of S. thompsoni comprised approximately 90% aggregates (blastozooids) and 10% solitaries (oozoids). Generalised Additive Models associated low chlorophyll- a concentration and low solar elevation (outside of peak daylight) with higher S. thompsoni abundances. In addition, elevated abundances occurred in locations from where the sea ice retreated at least eight weeks previously. These abundance-environment relationships are consistent with results from several previous surveys in the region and the West Antarctic. Due to the complex life cycle of S. thompsoni , and the unpredictability of their distribution patterns, multi-seasonal and multi-year surveys are needed to confirm whether the 2016 distribution patterns are indicative of a long-term increase or southerly shift in abundances. The new information from this study provides much needed baseline abundance and distribution data (which can be used to assess future change in a currently understudied oceanographic region) on a species capable of shaping the future ecosystem structure and function in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean.
