Electron temperature fluctuation studies can help to understand the nature of the turbulent transport in to-kamak plasmas. At Tore Supra, a 32-channel heterodyne ECE radiometer has been upgraded with two chan-nels of 100 MHz bandwidth and tunable central frequencies allowing the shift of the plasma sample volume in the radial direction. With the sufficiently large video bandwidth and the long sampling time, it is possible to reduce significantly the thermal noise and to identify "true" high frequency components up to 200 kHz from the cross-correlation between these channels. 4. Radially sheared azimuthal flows and turbulent transport in a cylindrical plasma

A radially sheared azimuthal flow is observed in a cylindrical helicon plasma device without any apparent external sources of angular momentum input. Broadband fluctuations combined with a chain of coherent structures are observed, turbulent particle transport across the shear layer is inhibited, and energy appears to be transferred from linearly unstable intermediate wave numbers into both larger and smaller spatial scales that are linearly stable. The shape of the radial plasma potential profile associated with the azimuthal flow is in agreement with published theory, and the flow magnitude is consistent with estimates of the turbulent Reynolds stress. © 2004 American Institute of Physics.

WEST is an MA class superconducting, actively cooled, full tungsten (W) tokamak, designed to operate in long pulses up to 1000 s. In support of ITER operation and DEMO conceptual activities, key missions of WEST are: (i) qualification of high heat flux plasma-facing components in integrating both technological and physics aspects in relevant heat and particle exhaust conditions, particularly for the tungsten monoblocks foreseen in ITER divertor; (ii) integrated steady-state operation at high confinement, with a focus on power exhaust issues. During the phase 1 of operation (2017–2020), a set of actively cooled ITER-grade plasma facing unit prototypes was integrated into the inertially cooled W coated startup lower divertor. Up to 8.8 MW of RF power has been coupled to the plasma and divertor heat flux of up to 6 MW m−2 were reached. Long pulse operation was started, using the upper actively cooled divertor, with a discharge of about 1 min achieved. This paper gives an overview of the results achieved in phase 1. Perspectives for phase 2, operating with the full capability of the device with the complete ITER-grade actively cooled lower divertor, are also described.

Globally, the Cerrado is the most diverse savanna in terms of plant species, as well as one of the most threatened as the result of human impact; it is therefore considered a priority area for conservation. Some areas of the Cerrado have still not been subject to botanical collections and detailed studies, the Jalapão region being one of these. We describe four recently rediscovered species previously known only from type specimens collected at least 160 years ago: Hyptis caduca Epling (Lamiaceae), Duguetia rotundifolia R.E.Fr. (Annonaceae), Diospyros ovalis Hiern (Ebenaceae) and Rhabdodendron gardnerianum (Benth.) Sandwith (Rhabdodendraceae). Comments on their ecology, conservation status and occurrence are provided, together with a distribution map. New morphological data have been recorded, and all species are considered to be under some degree of threat. These rediscoveries highlight the importance of further fieldwork in poorly sampled and highly biodiverse regions such as Jalapão and neighbouring areas, as well as the urgent need for conservation of the highly threatened Cerrado biome. ASDEX Upgrade was operated with a fully W-covered wall in 2007 and 2008. Stationary H-modes at the ITER target values and improved H-modes with H up to 1.2 were run without any boronization. The boundary conditions set by the full W wall (high enough ELM frequency, high enough central heating and low enough power density arriving at the target plates) require significant scenario development, but will apply to ITER as well. D retention has been reduced and stationary operation with saturated wall conditions has been found. Concerning confinement, impurity ion transport across the pedestal is neoclassical, explaining the strong inward pinch of high-Z impurities in between ELMs. In improved H-mode, the width of the temperature pedestal increases with heating power, consistent with a β1/2pol,ped scaling. In the area of MHD instabilities, disruption mitigation experiments using massive Ne injection reach volume averaged values of the total electron density close to those required for runaway suppression in ITER. ECRH at the q = 2 surface was successfully applied to delay density limit disruptions. The characterization of fast particle losses due to MHD has shown the importance of different loss mechanisms for NTMs, TAEs and also beta-induced Alfven eigenmodes (BAEs). Specific studies addressing the first ITER operational phase show that O1 ECRH at the HFS assists reliable low-voltage breakdown. During ramp-up, additional heating can be used to vary li to fit within the ITER range. Confinement and power threshold in He are more favourable than in H, suggesting that He operation could allow us to assess H-mode operation in the non-nuclear phase of ITER operation.

We present evidence showing that the statistical properties of turbulence in the scrape-off layer (SOL) are not modified in a high-confinement mode (H-mode) inbetween edge-localized modes (ELMs) with respect to a low confinement mode (L-mode). The plasma being in the upper-single null magnetic configuration, the reciprocating probe around the bottom X-point is used to characterize in the same discharge the low and the high-field SOL. In H-mode inbetween ELMs, the average value and the standard deviation of the ion saturation current are found very close to values in L-mode. The normalized standard deviation is found to have the same values as in L-mode independently of the probe position. The probability distribution function is found similar in the two regimes reflecting the fact that the two transport processes, diffusion and convection, are not modified with respect to each other. The power spectra were also found similar, indicating the same distribution of the turbulence intensity among the scales in L- and H-modes. The plasma profiles in the SOL, determined using the lithium beam diagnostic, were found to have the same shape as a function of the radial position also reflecting the non-modification of the transport properties in L- and H-modes.

- Abstract
High-pressure noble gas jet injection is a mitigation technique which potentially satisfies the requirements of fast response time and reliability, without degrading subsequent discharges. Previously reported gas jet experiments on DIII-D showed good success at reducing deleterious disruption effects. In this paper, results of recent gas jet disruption mitigation experiments on Alcator C-Mod and DIII-D are reported. Jointly, these experiments have greatly improved the understanding of gas jet dynamics and the processes involved in mitigating disruption effects. In both machines, the sequence of events following gas injection is observed to be quite similar: the jet neutrals stop near the plasma edge, the edge temperature collapses and large MHD modes are quickly destabilized, mixing the hot plasma core with the edge impurity ions and radiating away the plasma thermal energy. High radiated power fractions are achieved, thus reducing the conducted heat loads to the chamber walls and divertor. A significant (2 × or more) reduction in halo current is also observed. Runaway electron generation is small or absent. These similar results in two quite different tokamaks are encouraging for the applicability of this disruption mitigation technique to ITER., United States. Dept. of Energy (Coop. The effect of the ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) on the scrape-off layer (SOL) is still an open issue, where, lately it was shown on the ASDEX-Upgrade tokamak that turbulence large-scale structures, known as blobs or avaloids, are suppressed by ICRH [G. Antar et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2010]. On the Tore Supra tokamak, we confirm that the ICRH suppresses large-scale structures while small-scale structures are enhanced; Overall, the turbulence level of fluctuations is reported to drop from about 40% to 25%. The dependence on the ICRH power showed that if a threshold existed it would be below 500 kW and that above this power, no additional effects on the SOL turbulence are reported. The other study reported in this article deals with the importance of the magnetic field line connections or, in other words, whether the interaction between ICRH and turbulence is global, affecting the whole plasma, or local affecting regions that are magnetically connected to the active antenna. We found that the toroidal connection to the active antenna is not critical in the sense that turbulence in regions close to the antenna but not necessarily connected are still affected. For regions that are not connected and far from the active antenna, turbulence does not change much when applying ICRH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On many tokamaks (C-Mod, EAST, FTU, JET, HT-7, TS), a decrease in current drive efficiency of the Lower Hybrid (LH) waves is observed in high electron density plasmas. The cause of this behaviour is believed to be: Parametric Instabilities (PI) and Scattering from Density Fluctuations (SDF). For the ITER LH system, our knowledge must be improved to avoid such effects and to maintain the LH current drive efficiency at high density. The ITPA IOS group coordinates this effort [1] and all experimental data are essential to validate the numerical codes in progress. Usually the broadening of the LH wave frequency spectrum is measured by a probe located in the plasma edge. For this study, the frequency spectrum of a reflected power signal from the LH antenna was used. In addition, the spectrum measurements are compared with the density fluctuations observed on RF probes located at the antenna mouth. Several plasma currents (0.6 to 1.4 MA) and densities up to 5.2 x 1019 m
-3 have been realised on Tore Supra (TS) long pulses and with high injected RF power, up to 5.4 MW-30s. This allowed using a spectrum analyser to make several measurements during the plasma pulse. The side lobe amplitude, shifted by 20-30MHz with respect to the main peak, grows with increasing density. Furthermore, for an increase of plasma current at the same density, the spectra broaden and become asymmetric. Some parametric dependencies are shown in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
