This study evaluated the effects of mulching on upland rice cultivars Comecru and Cambará and the weed community under four amounts of babassou (Attalea speciosa Mart. ex Spreng.) straw mulching namely: 0, 15, 20, 25 t ha-1 with a view to control weeds. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme with four replications. The rice plant height, percentage of fertile panicles, number of spikelets per panicle, weight of 100 grains and grain yield were assessed. We also assessed the weed community by computing the following phytosociological parameters: density, frequency and the importance value index (IVI) of each species. Babassou straw mulching reduced weed density and dry mass between rows of upland rice cultivars and increased the rice yield. The weed species with the highest Importance Value Index (IVI) in the treatments with no mulching were Cyperus iria, Fimbristylis dichotoma and Digitaria ciliaris. Rice grain yield was increased with the increase in the amount of straw. Comecru cv. had the highest suppressive effect on weeds with significantly higher grain yield (1,214.85 kg-1) than Cambará cv. (878.72 kg ha-1). We conclude that the higher amounts (20 and 25 t ha-1) of babassou straw mulching suppressed weeds, providing less competition with the rice cultivars, which resulted in an increase in the number of rice panicles, weight of 100 grains, spikelet fertility and grain yield in both rice cultivars

Weed management in okra grown in organic system minimizes crop yield losses. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the period prior to weed interference in okra grown in organic system during the rainy and dry seasons in the state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil. Experiments were conducted in the rainy and dry seasons in randomized block design with seven treatments and four replications. The treatments were T1 = weeds coexistence with okra for 7 days; T2 = coexistence for 14 days; T3 = coexistence for 21 days; T4 = coexistence for 28 days; T5 = coexistence for 35 days; T6 = coexistence for 42 days and, T7 = coexistence for 74 days). In addition to these treatments, we kept a control treatment with weed free until harvest to obtain maximum yield. At the end of each period of weed coexistence with the crop, three weed samples were collected in 0.25 m² to evaluate density, dry mass and to analise phytosociological parameters. The main weeds in both seasons were Commelina benghalensis, Cynodon dactylon, Eleusine indica, Alternanthera tenella and Amaranthus spinosus. The coexistence of weeds with the crop until harvest caused losses of 51% in the rainy season and 67% in the dry season compared to weed free control. In the rainy season, the period before weed interference (PBI) on okra crop of organic system was 12 days after emergence (DAE). In the dry season, 5% yield loss was observed 4 days after transplanting (DAT). Weed management in organic okra should be carried out earlier in the dry season than in the rainy season to avoid high yield losses

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi traçar o perfil fisiológico, sanitário e o controle de fitopatógenos em quatro espécies de sementes florestais. Antes dos testes, as sementes de juçara (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), jenipapo (Genipa americana L.), urucum (Bixa orellana L.) e cuia (Crescentia cujete L.) foram desinfestadas com álcool 70%, hipoclorito de sódio a 5% e água destilada. Os testes de germinação, emergência e sanidade foram realizados conforme a RAS. No manejo alternativo, foram testados o isolado de Bacillus methylotrophicus e o óleo de nim, sendo realizado por meio de dois experimentos independentes em delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC), com quatro tratamentos e oito repetições. O experimento “um” foi realizado através da microbiolização das sementes com B. methylotrophicus e, no experimento “dois”, as sementes foram pulverizadas com óleo de nim a 15% com auxílio de pulverizador manual. As sementes de juçara, jenipapo, urucum e cuia obtiveram 9,0; 67,00; 17,50 e 63,5% de germinação; 0,5; 7,00; 0,5 e 63;5% de emergência; 22,81; 12,15; 15,66 e 8,73% de teor de água, respectivamente. Os fungos fitopatogênicos de maior incidência foram Penicillium sp., Aspergillus sp., Fusarium sp., nas sementes florestais de cuia, jenipapo, juçara e urucum, respectivamente. As sementes tratadas com óleo de nim e as microbiolizadas com B. methylotrophicus obtiveram controle significativo para Aspergillus sp.; Penicillium sp., em sementes de jenipapo; Lasiodiplodia sp. e Fusarium sp. em sementes de urucum. Portanto, o uso de B. methylotrophicus e óleo de nim pode ser considerado alternativa viável na redução de patógenos de sementes florestais. Abstract The objective of this work was to trace the physiological, health and phytopathogen control in four species of forest seeds. Before the tests and treatments, the juçara (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), genipap (Genipa americana L.), annatto (Bixa Orellana L.) and calabash (Crescentia cujete L.) seeds were washed three times with 70% alcohol, 5% sodium hypochlorite and distilled water. Germination, emergency and health tests were performed according to the RAS. In the alternative management, Bacillus methylotrophicus isolate and neem oil were tested, being carried out through two independent experiments in a completely randomized design (DIC), with four treatments and eight repetitions. Experiment one was carried out by microbiolizing the seeds with B. methylotrophicus and, in experiment two, the seeds were sprayed with 15% neem oil with the aid of a manual spray. The seeds of juçara, genipapo, annatto and calabash, obtained 9.0%, 67.00%, 17.50%, 63.5% of germination; 0.5%, 7.00%, 0.5%, 63.5% emergency; 22.81%, 12.15%, 15.66%, 8.73% water content respectively. The phytopathogenic fungi with the highest incidence were Penicillium sp., Aspergillus sp., Fusarium sp., in the forest seeds of calabash, genipap, juçara and annatto, respectively. The seeds treated with neem oil and those microbiolized with B. methylotrophicus obtained significant control for Aspergillus sp; Penicillium sp., In genipap seeds; Lasiodiplodia sp. and Fusarium sp. in annatto seeds. Therefore, the use of B. methylotrophicus and neem oil can be considered viable alternatives to reduce pathogens from forest seeds.

The objective of this research was to assess the potential of abiotic compounds as defense response enhancers in maize using enzymatic quantification and their efficiency in reduction of damages caused by S. frugiperda. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with six treatments and five replications. The treatments were: T1: positive control (distilled water + infestation); T2: negative control (without product application, uninfested); T3: biofertilizer; T4: acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM); T5: potassium silicate; T6: potassium silicate + ASM. The treatments were applied in V6 stage of maize plants. After five days, the plants were artificially infested with 2nd instar caterpillars of S. frugiperda. Damage assessments were carried out at 4, 8, 16 and 22 days after infestation using a scale of notes. To evaluate the enzymatic activity, one leaf of each plant was removed at 2, 4, 8, 16 and 22 days after infestation. The largest peroxidase activities were observed at two DAI (days after infestation) using the potassium silicate + ASM (2,344.12 UAE.mg-1 of proteína.min-1) treatment, while the larger polyphenol oxidase activity peaks were observed after treatment with ASM at 22 DAI. The application of potassium silicate + ASM in corn plants can promote peroxidase activity. The polyphenol oxidase activity was increased after application of ASM, whereas the presence of the pest (on positive control) could potentially increase the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase. The applications of ASM alone and potassium silicate + ASM contributed to reduction of the foliar damage level caused by S. frugiperda in corn plants.

The objective of the present study was to assess the seed health quality, quantification of seed-seedling pathogen transmission and the effect of plant extracts in reducing plant pathogens in the seeds of the tomato varieties San Marzano and Ipa 6. For the seed health, the samples were disinfested, plated and assessed after seven days, according to the Brazilian Seed Analysis Rule. For the transmission rate, 12 trays were prepared with 100 seeds each and assessed at 7, 14 and 21 d.a.s. (days after seeding) using 100 seedlings. The plant (main root, stalk and leaves) tissues were plated in PDA culture medium and assessed after seven days of incubation. Aqueous extracts were prepared from cinnamon, basil, neem and eucalyptus with 0.5% concentration and the seeds were immersed in each solution for 10 minutes. Then, they plated and assessed after seven days. The health test showed that biggest incidences of Aspergillus fumigatus (26 %) and Aspergillus flavus (26 %) were occurred in the seeds of the varieties Ipa 6 and San Marzano, respectively. The fungi A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, R. stolonifer and Curvularia sp. were detected in quantification of transmission in the seeds of the two tomato varieties. The treatment with basil extract resulted in the least fungus incidence in the transmission quantification of ‘San Marzano’ tomato seeds, while on Ipa 6 seeds the eucalyptus treatment performed better. The interference of treatments was not observed in tomato seed germination. However, there was decrease in incident of pathogens in seeds treated with the plant extracts and different effects was observed based on type and species of the pathogen.

The objective of the present study was to assess the anti-fungal activity of medicinal plant extracts on inhibition of Colletotrichum gloesporioides mycelial growth, sporulation and germination and on anthracnose control in Heliconia psitacorum cv. Golden Torch and Heliconia rostrata. Extracts of garlic, lemon grass, cinnamon, lemon balm, eucalyptus, ginger, mint, bitter melon and black pepper were used. The, mycelial were assessed in vitro by measuring their growth in Petri dishes. Sporulation was assessed by counting spores in a Neubauer chamber. Germination was observed based on germination tube emission. In the in vitro tests, the inflorescences were treated with the plant extracts and inoculated with the pathogen 24 h later. The results showed that all the extracts presented anti-fungal activity, in greater or lesser intensity, compared to the control. The garlic extract resulted in the highest mycelial growth inhibition rate. Regarding sporulation, the bitter melon, ginger, mint, popcorn eucalyptus and bitter melon extracts were more efficacious, interfering in spore formation; while the ginger extract most reduced spore germination inhibiting germination tube emission. For the in vivo tests, it was observed that all the plant extracts tested were efficient in reducing lesion severity in the inflorescence, showing that the use of plant extracts may be a promising alternative for managing the diseases that affect helconia post-harvest. This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters of Turiaçu pineapple clones using mixed models; and estimate genetic correlation coefficient between traits, to provide important information to breeding programs. For this, 19 pineapple plants were visually selected and its slips were collected and planted in a single environment and nine traits were evaluated. The genetic parameters of most evaluated traits presented significant differences between the 19 clones. Some traits, such as Fusarium wilt resistance, showed high magnitudes of heritability. Clones did not differ in relation to total titratable acidity (TTA) and total soluble solids (TSS). However, these traits, which have implications to fruit quality, showed to be negatively correlated to fruit mass (−0.46 and −0.67). The results indicate that the population of Turiaçu pineapple is suitable for selection, especially for Fusarium wilt resistance. Also, Turiaçu clones can be used in breeding programs of pineapple. As sementes são componentes essenciais da economia, nelas está contida a vida e a possibilidade de disseminação de doenças, sendo a sanidade importante para o desenvolvimento sadio de plantas com altos rendimentos. O trabalho objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade sanitária de sementes de arroz da variedade Bonança e a redução de fitopatógenos, utilizando a microbiolização de sementes com Bacillus macerans, B. polymyxa, B. pentothenticus, B. lentus, B. pumilus, B. stearothermophilus e Bacillus sp.. A sanidade das sementes foi avaliada pelo método Blotter Test. A redução da incidência dos fitopatógenos nas sementes foi analisada por microbiolização para cada isolado e posteriormente, as sementes foram semeadas em solo esterilizado. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado nos experimentos em laboratório e em casa de vegetação. Avaliou-se a incidência e redução dos fitopatógenos em sementes e plantas de arroz aos sete e quatorze dias após a semeadura. As sementes foram avaliadas em lupa para identificar colônias de fungos. Quanto às plantas, em cada época retirou-se 100 plantas e realizou-se a assepsia usual. Os resultados do teste in vitro as sementes de arroz variedade Bonança, microbiolizadas com os Bacillus spp., reduziram a incidência de Curvularia oryzae e Aspergillus niger. Nas plantas originadas das sementes microbiolizadas com os Bacillus spp., observou-se a redução da incidência de Curvularia oryzae, Aspergillus niger e Scopulariopsis sp. A ação dos isolados foi diferenciada quanto ao patógeno e o tempo após a microbiolização das sementes.

A research was carried out to study phytosociology and to determine the periods of weed interference in the okra crop in organic cropping system. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 20 treatments and four replications. The treatments were 10 periods of weed coexistence with the crop during 0-7, 0-14, 0-21, 0-28, 0-35, 0-42, 0-49, 0-56, 0-63 and 0-74 days after crop emergence (DAE) and 10 periods weed free during 0-7, 0-14, 0-21, 0-28, 0-35, 0-42, 0-49, 0-56, 0-63 and 0-74 DAE. The weeds were evaluated by the number of individuals and accumulated dry biomass of each population in the treatments. The relative frequency, relative density, relative dominance and importance value index of each species were used to determine the effect the weeds. The most important weeds based on the Importance value index were Commelina benghalensis L., Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers., Eleusine indica L., Phyllanthus niruri L. and Alternanthera tenella Colla. The period prior to interference and the total period of interference prevention were respectively of 12 and 36 days after emergence. The weed community caused yield losses of around 51%. In okra organic cropping system, weed control should be done early to boost okra plant growth in order to provide shade on the weeds to reduce the need for long control period. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality and seed production of Fabaceae and corn in monoculture and intercropping in areas cropped under different management. The following treatments were evaluated: corn + NPK + weed control; corn + weed control; corn + NPK; corn + crotalaria; corn + jack bean. Intercropping raised the average number of corn ears of corn and the seed IVG Weed control positively influenced the final stand and average number of ears. NPK fertilization on corn sowing positively influenced the seed electrical conductivity. The yield of corn plants intercropped with crotalaria and jack bean was statistically similar. However, their absolute values should be considered for economic purposes. Corn seeds derived from intercropping with crotalaria were more effective compared with intercropping with jack bean. Crotalaria and jack bean seeds when intercropped with corn have high production, germination and vigor (IVG and emergence).

The anthropic interference in aquatic ecosystems, favors the disordered colonization of T. domingensis, damaging the production of hydroelectric power and river traffic. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of C. typhae as a mycoherbicide in the control of T. domingensis, in vitro and in greenhouse. 107 samples of symptomatic T. domingensis leaves were collected in flooded areas of rivers in Brazil, with identification and isolation of the collected fungal species. The concentration of inoculum was determined to evaluate the incidence and severity of the disease, the influence of temperature on mycelial growth and conidia germination, the effect of temperature and leaf wetness period on T. domingensis infection by C. typhae and the host range test. The growth of the colonies of C. typhae was higher at 25 to 30 ºC, there was no interference of the photoperiod on germination of the spores, but the highest percentage of germination occurred at 17.39 ºC. The influence of environmental conditions on infection of inoculated leaves of T. dominguensis indicated that at 15 ºC and the period of leaf wetness of 48 hours promoted the highest incidence of the disease, as well as the severity for the same period of leaf wetness. The specificity test showed that C. typhae is specific and pathogenic to T. domingensis. Being this the first report of the occurrence of this pathogen in aquatic macrophytes of this species and in T. domingensis in Brazil.

Black fly is a pest of Asian origin that causes direct and indirect damages to citrus, damaging the development and production of plants. For the development of efficient management strategies of the pest, the integration of control methods is necessary, and biological control is the most appropriate. Among the agents that can be used, entomopathogenic fungi are considered one of the most important and wide-ranging use. This work investigated the occurrence of Purpureocillium lilacinum (Thom.) Luangsa-ard et al. (= Paecilomyces lilacinus), attackingnymphs of citrus black fly, Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). The fungus was isolated from infected Black fly nymphs, present on Citrus spp leaves in the municipality of Morros, Maranhão. After isolation, purification and morphological and molecular characterization, pathogenicity test was performed with A. woglumi nymphs. Morphological and molecular correspondence was verified between inoculum and the reisolated, proving the pathogenicity of P. lilacinum. Resumo A mosca-negra é uma praga de origem asiática que causa danos diretos e indiretos aos citros, prejudicando o desenvolvimento e a produção das plantas. Para o desenvolvimento de estratégias de manejo eficientes da praga, é necessária a integração de métodos de controle, sendo o controle biológico o mais indicado. Entre os agentes passíveis de utilização, os fungos entomopatogênicos são considerados um dos mais importantes e com largo espectro de utilização. Neste trabalho, é relatada a ocorrência de Purpureocillium lilacinum (Thom.) Luangsa-ard et al. (=Paecilomyces lilacinus), atacando ninfas da mosca-negra-dos-citros, Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). O fungo foi isolado de ninfas da mosca negra infectadas, presentes em folhas de Citrus spp. no município de Morros, Maranhão. Após isolamento, purificação e caracterização morfológica e molecular, realizou-se um teste de patogenicidade com ninfas de A. woglumi. Constatou-se correspondência morfológica e molecular entre o inóculoe o reisolado, comprovando-se a patogenicidade de P. lilacinum.

Papaya target-spot, caused by fungus Corynespora cassiicola presents a wide geographic distribution, causing leaf spots in several hosts. The aim of this research was to evaluate the behavior of papaya varieties and/or selections to the natural occurrence of target spot, and test the fungi toxic effect of neem, citronella and eucalyptus extracts, and fungi static effects of Bacillus isolates on the fungus C. cassiicola in vitro. To evaluate the natural occurrence of the disease in field, symptoms on leaves of 11 papaya varieties and/or selections have been assessed. The pathogenicity of isolates was verified by inoculation of plants in greenhouse. Neem, citronella and eucalyptus extracts were prepared at concentrations of 10, 15 and 20% and poured into Petri dishes containing C. cassiicola mycelium discs. For , Bacillusnine isolates were used, and the antagonistic potential was evaluated by the pairing of pathogen and isolate colonies by the circle method. Papaya varieties and/or selections presented all leaves with injury, and Canaan Sunrise Solo and Canaan Golden selections showed the greatest number of injuries per leaf, showing that papaya varieties and/or selections respond differently to the phytopathogen. All plant extracts tested showed inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of C. cassiicola in vitro. Bacillus isolates showed an antagonistic potential on the mycelial growth of the fungus, with B. methylotrophicus (Iso 31 and Iso 41) being the most promising as a biological control agent. The results indicate that forms of alternative control of diseases are promising in the management of papaya target-spot. RESUMO A mancha-alvo do mamoeiro, causada pelo fungo Corynespora casiicola, possui ampla distribuição geográfica, causando manchas foliares em vários hospedeiros. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar o comportamento de variedades/seleções de mamoeiro à ocorrência natural da mancha-alvo e testar o efeito fungitóxico de extratos de nim, citronela e eucalipto, e fungistático de isolados de Bacillus sobre o fungo C. cassiicola in vitro. Para avaliar a ocorrência natural da doença no campo, foram avaliados os sintomas em folhas de 11 variedades e/ou seleções de mamoeiro. A patogenicidade dos isolados foi verificada pela inoculação de plantas em casa de vegetação. Os extratos de nim, citronela e eucalipto foram preparados nas concentrações de 10; 15 e 20% e vertidos em placas de Petri, contendo discos de micélio de C. cassiicola. Para Bacilllus, foram utilizados nove isolados, e a potencialidade antagonista foi avaliada pelo pareamento de colônias do patógeno e dos isolados, pelo método de círculo. As variedades e seleções de mamoeiro apresentaram a totalidade das folhas com lesões, sendo as seleções Canaã Sunrise Solo e Canaã Golden as que apresentaram maior número de lesões/folhas, mostrando que as variedades/seleções de mamoeiro respondem diferentemente ao fitopatógeno. Todos os extratos vegetais testados apresentaram efeito inibitório sobre o crescimento micelial in vitro de C. cassiicola. Os isolados de Bacillus apresentaram potencial antagônico sobre o crescimento micelial do fungo, sendo os isolados de B. methylotrophicus (Iso 31 e Iso 41) mais promissores como agentes de controle biológico. Estes resultados indicam que formas de controle alternativo de doenças são promissoras no manejo da mancha-alvo do mamoeiro.

Rice is one of the world’s most consumed cereals, however, its production is affected by fungal diseases. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the severity of diseases and grain yield potential of upland rice with silicon fertilization combined with seed microbiolization with Bacillus methylotrophicus isolates. Two experiments were conducted, one in Igarapé do Meio, Maranhão (MA), Brazil, with rice seeds of the variety Palha-Murcha and one in São Bento MA with rice seeds of the variety BRS-Primavera. A randomized block experimental design in a split-plot arrangement with five replications were used in both experiments, with agro-silicon rates (0.0, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 Mg ha-1) in the plots and microbiolized and non-microbiolized rice seeds with B. Methylotrophicus at concentration of 108 CFU ml-1 in the subplots. The seedling emergence, grain yield, number of panicles, plant height, plant dry weight and severity of brown leafspot, leaf scald and grain spot were evaluated. Soil fertilization with agro-silicon affected positively the plant height of the variety Palha-Murcha and the number of panicles, plant dry weight and grain yield of the variety BRS-Primavera, and negatively the germination of the variety BRS-Primavera. Leaf scald severity in the variety BRS-Primavera reduced with microbiolized seeds with B. methylotropicus. Microbiolization with B. methylotropicus had no effect on severity of brown leafspot and grain spot in the varieties evaluated. RESUMO O arroz é um dos cereais mais consumidos em todo o mundo e sua produção é afetada por doenças fúngicas. Neste sentido objetivou-se avaliar a severidade de doenças e o potencial produtivo do arroz de terras altas em função da aplicação de silício e sementes microbiolizadas com isolados de Bacillus methylotrophicus. Foram realizados dois experimentos, em dois munícipios do estado do Maranhão, Brasil: um em Igarapé do Meio, com sementes de arroz da variedade Palha Murcha e outro em São Bento, com a variedade Primavera. Os experimentos foram instalados no delineamento em blocos casualizados, com cinco repetições, em parcelas subdivididas. As parcelas foram constituídas por cinco doses de agrosilício (0,0; 1,0; 2,0; 4,0 e 6,0 t ha-1) e as subparcelas foram constituídas por sementes de arroz microbiolizadas e não microbiolizadas com B. methylotrophicus, na concentração de 108 UFC ml-1. Os parâmetros avaliados foram emergência de plântulas, produtividade de grãos, número de panícula, altura de planta, massa de planta seca e severidade de mancha parda, escaldadura e mancha de grãos. As doses de agrosilício aplicadas no solo afetaram positivamente a altura de plantas, para a variedade Palha Murcha. Na variedade Primavera, as doses de agrosilício influenciaram de forma positiva o número de panículas, massa de planta seca e a produtividade de grãos e de forma negativa a germinação. Para esta variedade, a severidade da escaldadura foi reduzida quando as sementes foram microbiolizadas com B. methylotropicus. A microbiolização com B. methylotropicus não influenciou a severidade da mancha parda e a severidade da mancha de grãos, para as duas variedades de arroz.

The fusarium is an important disease in yellow passion fruit that causes severe limitation in fruit production and reduced longevity of the orchards. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of organic residues in vitro and in vivo as alternative control in Fusarium of yellow passion fruit, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae. Six concentrations were evaluated in vitro (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 %), in the form aqueous extracts, in the mycelial growth inhibition and in vivo (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 g kg-1), incorporated on soil for the Fusarium control. The organic residues used were eucalyptus leaves, bagasse babassu and cassava peeling. These residues were subjected to nutritional and microbiological analyzes. The pathogenicity of isolates tested was confirmed, which proves the presence of Fusarium in yellow passion fruit in vivo. Bagasse babassu presented the highest N, P and K concentration. Fungal species with higher frequency were Penicillium sp., Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus ochraceus. I There was a significative inhibition in vitro of the bagasse babassu extract at 6 % and other two residues at 10 %. In vivo the 60 g kg-1 of bagasse babassu and 80 g kg-1 of cassava peeling were efficient for Fusarium control. Eucalyptus leaves presented no effect on development of Fusarium wilt in yellow passion fruit in the greenhouse. The organic residues can be used for the Fusarium control in yellow passion fruit.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a qualidade sanitária de sementes de arroz, quantificar a transmissão de Curvularia lunata associada à semente e à plântula, e avaliar o efeito dos isolados de Bacillus spp., no controle da mancha foliar, do cultivar Bonança. Para avaliação da sanidade de sementes, as amostras foram desinfestadas e plaqueadas, sendo avaliadas após sete dias de incubação. Na confirmação da patogenicidade, as plântulas foram inoculadas por meio de pulverização e a avaliação da doença ocorreu sete dias após. Na caracterização do isolado de C. lunata, foi realizada medição da largura, comprimento e número de septos de 100 conídios. Para a taxa de transmissão de C. lunata, foram preparadas 12 bandejas, com 100 sementes cada, de modo a proceder-se às avaliações aos 7, 14, 21 dias após a semeadura (d.a.s.). De cada uma das 100 plântulas, foram separadas as raízes, após sete dias. A inoculação dos isolados de Bacillus foi realizada na forma de suspensão, pulverizada sobre a parte aérea das plântulas. Após uma semana, foi inoculado a C. lunata. A avaliação foi efetuada aos 15 dias após inoculação dos isolados patogênicos, medindo-se o tamanho da lesão. No teste de sanidade foi detectada maior incidência de C. lunata (70%), o qual se apresentou patogênico à variedade de arroz Bonança, sendo detectado em todos os órgãos da plântula. Dentre os isolados de Bacillus, os que mais se destacaram no controle foram B41 (B. Cereus) e B35 (Bacillus sp.), confirmando seu potencial biocontrolador. This study evaluates the sanitary quality of rice seeds cultivar Bonança, quantifies the transmission of Curvularia lunata associated with seeds - seedling and evaluates the efficiency of Bacillus spp. isolates for the control of leaf spot. The samples were disinfected and plated, and seed health was evaluated after seven days. After confirmation of pathogenicity, the seedlings inoculated by the spraying method and the occurrence of disease was assessed after seven days. For characterization of the C. lunata isolate, width and length measurements and number of septa of 100 conidia were taken. We assessed transmission rate of C. lunata in 12 trays, each with 100 seeds, and conducted evaluations at 7, 14, 21 days after infection. From each of the 100 seedlings we separated the primary root, the stem and glumes and plated them on PDA for evaluation after seven days. The inoculation of Bacillus isolates was carried out throughaerial spraying of the suspension on the plants. After one week, C. lunata was inoculated and after 15 days lesion dimensions were measured. We detected the highest incidence of C. lunata (70%), which was pathogenic to the rice variety Bonança and was detected in all organs of the seedling. Among the isolates of Bacillus, those that stood out in controlling C. lunata were B41 (B. Cereus) and B35 (Bacillus sp.), confirming their potential for biocontrol.

A utilização de materiais orgânicos que melhoram as características físicas, químicas e biológicas do solo vem sendo estudada como indutor da supressividade a fitopatógenos. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da incorporação da parte aérea de leguminosas no controle da fusariose do tomateiro. Os resíduos frescos das leguminosas leucena, feijão guandu, amendoim forrageiro e feijão de porco foram incorporados ao solo nas concentrações 0; 20; 40; 60 e 80 g L-1. Sementes de tomateiro da variedade Santa Cruz Kada Gigante foram semeadas em bandejas contendo terra autoclavado e húmus de minhoca. As mudas foram transplantadas para vasos, contendo substrato (terra autoclavada + resíduo fresco), 15 dias após a semeadura. Aos 15 dias após o transplantio realizou-se a inoculação, por meio de ferimento de raízes em meia lua, aplicando em seguida 20 mL da suspensão de 1x10(6) conídios mL-1 por planta. A avaliação foi realizada 21 dias após a inoculação através de escala de notas variando de 1 a 5. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições, sendo a unidade experimental duas plantas por vaso. A incorporação da parte aérea das leguminosas leucena, feijão guandu, amendoim forrageiro e feijão de porco demonstrou eficiência no controle da fusariose. Maior percentual de controle foi obtido com os resíduos de amendoim forrageiro (40 g L-1), feijão de porco (60 g L-1) e leucena (80 g L-1), apresentando um percentual de controle de 73,3%. O amendoim forrageiro pode ser considerado o mais eficiente, por necessitar de uma menor concentração para atingir o mesmo percentual de controle da fusariose. The use of organic materials that improve physical, chemical and biological soil properties has been studied as inducer of suppressiveness to plant pathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of incorporating legume shoot in the control of Fusarium wilt affecting tomatoes. Fresh residues of the legumes Leucaena, pigeon pea, peanut and jack bean were added to the soil at the concentrations of 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 g L-1. Seeds from tomato plants of Santa Cruz Kada Gigante variety were sown on trays containing autoclaved soil and earthworm castings. The seedlings were transplanted to pots containing substrate (autoclaved soil + fresh residue) at 15 days after sowing. At 15 days after transplanting, inoculation was done by means of half-moon-shaped injury in the roots, followed by application of 20 mL of a suspension of 1x10(6) conidia mL-1 plant. The evaluation was carried out at 21 days after inoculation by using a visual grading scale from 1 to 5. Experimental design was completely randomized, with four replicates, and the experimental unit was constituted of two plants per pot. Incorporation of shoot of the legumes Leucaena, pigeon pea, peanut and jack bean was efficient in controlling Fusarium wilt. The highest control percentage was obtained with residues of peanut (40 g L-1), jack bean (60 g L-1) and Leucaena (80 g L-1), resulting in a control percentage of 73.3%. The peanut can be considered most efficient because it requires a lower concentration to reach the same percentage of Fusarium wilt control.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of seed treatment with fresh suspensions and powder formulations with Bacillus methylotrophicus to promote plant growth and induction of resistance against fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici) in tomato plants under greenhouse conditions, verifying the occurrence of morphological and biochemical changes in the evaluated plants. Powder formulations based on Cassava (Manihot esculenta), Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea) and sodium alginate containing Bacillus, in addition to the commercial product Quartz®, were used to microbiolize the tomato seeds of the cultivar Santa Cruz. The formulations promoted plant growth, with a seedling vigor index greater than 50% for all treatments containing B. mthylotrophicus, in addition to a significant increase in total dry matter. The treatments induced systemic resistance, controlling the fusarium wilt with a 75% reduction of the disease and activation of enzymes such as peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase, only β-1,3-glucanase presented less activity than controls (treatments without B. mthylotrophicus). Thus, the use of formulations containing Bacillus are efficient in promoting plant growth of tomato plants and in inducing resistance to the control of fusarium wilt.

To study the effects of resistance inducers used to control fusarium wilt in tomatoes due to the fungus Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht f. sp. lycopersici, we evaluated the effects of ASM (acibenzolar-S-methyl), Agro-Mos, chitosan, Biopirol and neem oil on F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici mycelial growth and sporulation and systemic resistance in tomatoes. In vitro experiments comprised evaluations of the products’ effects on the mycelial growth and sporulation of the PDA (potato dextrose agar) growth medium-cultured pathogen. In vivo experiments included product application to tomato plants of the Santa Cruz cultivar that were grown for 25 days on autoclaved soil, followed by determinations of disease severity and peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and Beta-1,3-glucanase enzyme activity levels, which are related to the process of resistance induction. Pathogen inoculation occurred after 5 days at a concentration of 106 conidia/mL. We evaluated the disease according to a rating scale. Enzymatic activity was determined according to specific protocols. Neem oil controlled pathogen mycelial growth and sporulation, while ASM influenced sporulation. The products reduced the severity of wilt in the plants. We highlight neem oil, Agro-Mos and Biopirol due to their ability to induce significant peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and Beta-1,3-glucanase expression, respectively.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a ação dos produtos ASM e Ecolife no controle da antracnose pós-colheita em frutos de banana. Frutos sadios de banana, variedades maçã, prata, pacovan e cacau , em fase intermediária de maturação, foram imersos previamente em soluções de ASM e Ecolife e inoculados com Colletotrichum musae. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial com quatro repetições. Os resultados apresentados demonstraram a eficácia dos produtos nas concentrações de 5 ml/ L (Ecolife) e 0,50g/ L (ASM) no controle da antracnose nas variedades analisa das. A variedade cacau apresentou menor lesão quando tratada com o Ecolife (5,79 mm). Com relação ao efeito do ASM, a bana na prata demonstrou um melhor resultado, com tamanho médio de lesão de 5,62 mm. Com o decorrer do processo de maturação dos frutos houve um decréscimo na severidade da doença nas quatro variedades estudadas, exceto no tratamento testemunha, que continuou apresentando aumento no tamanho das lesões nos frutos e atingir a polpa ao final da maturação.The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of ASM and Ecolife on the control of post-harvest antracnosis in banana. Banana fruits of Maçã, Prata, Pacovan and Figo varieties, at intermediate stage of maturation, were immersed in solutions of ASM and Ecolife and inoculated with Colletotrichum musae A completely randomized design was used, at a factorial scheme 4x2 (four varieties x two products) with four replicates. The presented results demonstrated the susceptibility of the fruits to the disease, mainly Maça variety with lesion of 17,99 mm. It was demosntrated the effectiveness of products at concentrations of 5ml. L-1 (Ecolife) and 0.50g. L-1 (ASM) on antracnosis control. The Figo variety presented the smallest injuries when treated with Ecolife (5.79 mm). Regarding ASM effects, Prata variety demonstrated the best performance, with 5.62 mm of injuries diameter. Throughout the maturation of the fruits the disease severity was declined in all varieties, except in the control treatment, where injuries continued growing until reaching the pulp.

Considerando a importância do cultivo de flores tropicais no contexto nacional e internacional, buscou-se realizar um levantamento da ocorrência de fungos e nematóides associados às mesmas, em áreas de cultivos de flores tropicais em São Luís - MA. Foram realizadas visitas periódicas, em intervalos bimestrais, nos locais onde a principal atividade era o cultivo de flores tropicais, para o monitoramento e coleta de plantas ou partes de plantas das espécies: Heliconia spp., Alpinia purpurata e Etlingera elatior com sintomatologia típica de doenças. Realizou-se, ainda, o teste de patogenicidade dos principais fungos detectados como agentes causais das manchas foliares. Os resultados obtidos confirmaram a existência de fungos associados aos cultivos de flores tropicais em São Luís, com destaque para Curvularia eragrostides (78 %), Pestalotiopsis sp. (68 %) e Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (47 %) como agentes causais de manchas foliares em espécies da família Heliconiaceae, e Curvularia eragrostides (75 %), Pestalotiopsis sp. (37 %) em espécies da família Zingiberaceae. Foram registrados oito gêneros de nematóides, tanto na família Heliconiaceae, quanto na Zingiberaceae, destacando-se o gênero Meloidogyne. Considering the importance of cultivating tropical flowers in the national and international context, a survey of the occurrence of fungi and nematodes associated with tropical flowers was conducted in crop areas in São Luís - Maranhão State, Brazil. Periodic visits were made, at bimonthly intervals, to places where the main activity was tropical flower cultivation, for the monitoring and collection of plant parts or plants of the species: Heliconia spp., Alpinia purpurata and Etlingera elatior with symptoms typical of diseases. Pathogen city test was also conducted for the main pathogenic fungi detected as causal agents of leaf spots. Results confirmed the existence of fungi associated with tropical flower cultivation in São Luís, especially Curvularia eragrostidis (78%), Pestalotiopsis sp. (68%) and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (47%) as causal agents of leaf spots in species of the family Heliconiaceae, and Curvularia eragrostidis (75%) and Pestalotiopsis sp. (37%) in species of the family Zingiberaceae. Eight nematode genera were recorded, both in the family Heliconiaceae and in the family Zingiberaceae, especially the genus Meloidogyne.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a dinâmica populacional de Aleurocanthus woglumi ao longo de um ano, verificando-se a época de maior ocorrência, seus picos populacionais e a distribuição dessa praga em dois pomares de Citrus spp. no município de São Luís - MA. Para o estudo da dinâmica populacional, foram selecionadas 10 plantas ao acaso, em cada pomar, coletando-se 20 folhas por planta, no período de julho de 2006 a junho de 2007, contando-se o número de posturas, ovos e ninfas. Para a determinação da distribuição de A. woglumi, as plantas foram divididas em quadrantes: norte, leste, sul e oeste, retirando-se 5 folhas/quadrante, totalizando-se 200 folhas por área de coleta. Com relação à distribuição na planta, o delineamento foi o inteiramente casualizado, adotando-se o esquema fatorial 2 x 4 (período seco e chuvoso x quadrante), com 13 repetições (nº de coletas). Realizou-se uma análise exploratória de dados, e as médias obtidas foram submetidas ao teste de Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade. Observou-se, nas duas localidades, que o inseto se distribuiu na copa da árvore de maneira homogênea e que os maiores níveis populacionais de A. woglumi ocorreram no período de baixa precipitação (julho a dezembro de 2006). This paper aims to evaluate the populational dynamics of Aleurocanthus woglumi throughout one year, verifying the season with higher density, its populational peaks and citrus blackfly distribution in Citrus spp. in two orchards, in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. To study the populational dynamics, 10 plants were selected at random, in each orchard, as well as 20 leaves per plant, from July 2006 to June 2007, and the number of layings, eggs and nymphs was counted. To determine the vertical distribution of A. woglumi, plants were divided into quadrants: North, East, South and West, and 5 leaves/quadrant were removed, totaling 200 leaves per collecting area. Regarding to distribution over the plant, the delineation was entirely randomized adopting a 2 x 4 factorial scheme (dry and rainy seasons x quadrants), with 13 repetitions (number of collections). It accomplished an exploratory analysis of data and averages submitted to Tukey test at a 5% probability rate. It was observed that on the two locations the insect was distributed homogeneous on the tree canopies and that the highest populational levels of A. woglumi occurred in the low precipitation season (from July to December 2006).
