Abstract Using lake‐sediment cores to document past seismicity requires a comprehensive understanding of possible lateral variations in depositional processes. This study aims to reveal the lateral variations in earthquake‐induced event deposits throughout Lake Iznik, a large lake located on the middle strand of the North Anatolian Fault. Based on stratigraphic, sedimentological and geochemical analyses of 14 sediment cores from two subbasins across the lake, five different types of event deposits (T1–T5) were identified and characterised. One event deposit type (T5) is restricted to a delta mouth, characterised by the occurrence of authigenic Fe‐Mn carbonates and interpreted to result from flood events. The four other types of event deposits are characterised by their synchronicity between cores and their age consistency with historical earthquakes and are interpreted to be likely generated by earthquakes. The locally prominent 1065 CE historical earthquake that ruptured the sub‐lacustrine Iznik Fault produced at least three different types of event deposits. One deposit type (T2) is only observed for this very local earthquake, implying that the type of event deposit might also depend on ground‐motion parameters. At the lake scale, the occurrence of various event deposits depends on the flow distance from the source of sediment destabilisations to the coring site.

Knowledge of how glaciations formed landscapes is particularly important as receding glaciers currently uncover subglacial landscapes that are prone to a series of natural hazards, but that also bring opportunities for hydropower or water resources. We present high-resolution (1 × 1 m) swath bathymetric data of a proglacial lake in front of the Rhonegletscher (Swiss Alps) that started to form in the early 2000s allowing a look into a freshly uncovered glacier bed and its characterized morphology in an overdeepened setting. The comparison of two surveys from 2015 and 2021 allows an unprecedented quantification of the accumulation and erosion processes in the central lake basin. This highly dynamic environment is characterized by iceberg calving, fluctuating outflow conduits, rapid sedimentation due to particle-laden meltwaters and dumped glacial debris. Assuming constant sediment yield, the Rhone Lake would persist for ~300 years. However, as intense glacier retreat continues in the coming decades, a chain of overdeepened lakes will be revealed that will act as long persisting sediment traps.

The Alpine region was shaped by repeated glaciations during the Quaternary, which led to the formation of overdeepened valleys and basins. These features today, hidden below the present-day land surface, host multiple stacked and nested glacial sequences and offer valuable insight into the environmental history and geomorphological evolution of the region. The project Drilling Overdeepened Alpine Valleys (DOVE) of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) is dedicated to investigating such overdeepened structures around the Alps. Within DOVE, we here focus on the Tannwald Basin in southern Germany. Situated distally within the area formerly occupied by the Rhine Glacier piedmont lobe; it was shaped by multiple glaciations, yet it is located outside the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) ice extent. Previous seismic imaging and the presence of interglacial pollen sequences indicate a multi-phase infill history. The complex sedimentary architecture observed in a newly drilled core allows for comparison with seismic data and lithological evidence from other sites. On the basis of a lithofacies model that introduces 17 lithotypes, we propose that the basin fill is composed of three lithostratigraphic units that reflect the glacial history of the basin. After the erosion of the Tannwald Basin, a cold-climate, stacked basin-infill sequence recorded sedimentation of two glacial advances, before it was covered by LGM outwash. The sedimentary record includes an extensive basal glacial shear zone with deformed bedrock and several overlying diamict horizons. Further upcore, deformation structures underscore the role of gravitational processes as well as profound glaciotectonics, deforming the sediment deep within the subsurface. While the sedimentary record indicates a rather rapid infill of the depression, further age constraints and detailed investigations of ice-contact sediments will clarify open questions regarding the temporal classification of the deposits.

Corrosion inhibitors are one of the best practices to prevent the far-reaching negative impacts of corrosion on ferrous alloys. A thorough understanding of their corrosion-inhibiting effects is essential for a sustainable economy and environment. Anionic surfactants are known to act efficiently as corrosion inhibitors. Here, we present that in-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements can provide deep insights into the adsorption and inhibition mechanism of surfactants on stainless steel surfaces during local corrosion. These include the configuration of surfactant molecules on the surface and how the microstructure of the stainless steel surface influences the inhibition process. Three different anionic surfactants, namely palm kernel oil (PKO), linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), and fatty alcohol ether sulfate (FAES), were investigated on a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel (1.4510) in NaCl solution. For PKO, the results show random adsorption of bi- and multilayer whereas LAS and FAES adsorb only as local corrosion occurs. Thereby, LAS accumulates only locally and especially at the titanium precipitates of the 1.4510 and FAES forms a densely packed monolayer on the surface. This leads to better corrosion inhibiting properties for LAS and FAES compared to PKO.

Schülerlabore haben unter anderem zum Ziel, die Motivation, insbesondere das Interesse – i.S. einer gegenstandsbezogenen Motivation – von Schüler*innen an MINT-Themen und -Arbeitsweisen zu fördern. Darüber hinaus konnten sie sich schneller und produktiver als die formalen Bildungsorte den Herausforderungen der digitalen Transformation stellen. Das Potenzial, Schülerlabore auch als innovative Orte der Lehrkräftefortbildung (LFB) zu nutzen und digitalisierungsbezogene Kompetenzen bei Lehrkräften aufzubauen, wurde bisher nicht ausgeschöpft. Im Verbundprojekt mit insgesamt acht Standorten werden Schülerlabore zu LFB-Labs-digital ausgebaut und die Frage nach Implementierungsvoraussetzungen gelingender Fortbildungen in der digitalen Welt im MINT-Bereich bearbeitet. In diesem Artikel werden die theoretische Fundierung, Ziele und anvisierten Forschungsarbeiten des Verbunds LFB-Labs-digital dargelegt. Zur Unterstützung der mit der forschungsbasierten Qualitätsentwicklung der MINT-bezogenen Aus-, Fort- und Weiterbildung von Lehrkräften betrauten Einrichtungen in den Ländern sollen in Kooperation mit dem Kompetenzzentrum MINT des Bundes die Lernorte „Schülerlabore“ für die digitale LFB erschlossen werden, um vermittelt hierüber die Motivation von Schüler*innen für die MINT-Fächer zu fördern. Die in den Schülerlaboren evaluierten und vom fächerübergreifenden adaptiven Qualitätsmanagement für die LFB wissenschaftlich begleiteten Good-Practice-Beispiele werden zur Grundlage für den „Referenzrahmen LFB-Labs-digital“. Dieser wird – vor dem Hintergrund einer Ergebnistriangulation aus der Begleitforschung sowie den damit parallelisierten Studien zur Evidenzbasierung der Lehrkräftequalifizierung in der digitalen Welt und dem Musterqualitätshandbuch LFB – entwickelt und von einem Implementierungsbeirat mit ausgewiesenen Expert*innen in diesem Bereich auf Transferoptionen hin geprüft. Die digitale Infrastruktur für die LFB-Labs-digital-Veranstaltungsformate wird hierzu prozessbegleitend ausgebaut.

The modern Alpine landscape and its foreland were strongly impacted by the numerous glacier advance and retreat cycles during the Middle-to-Late Pleistocene. Due to the overall erosive character of each glaciation cycle, however, direct traces of older glaciations tend to be poorly preserved within the formerly glaciated domains of the pan-Alpine area. Nevertheless, sediments of older glaciations may occur hidden under the modern surface in buried glacially overdeepened troughs that reach below the normal level of fluvial erosion (fluvial base level). These sedimentary archives, partly dating back to the Middle Pleistocene period, are of great scientific value for reconstructing the timing and extent of extensive Alpine glaciation, paleoclimate, and paleoenvironmental changes in the past and help to better understand ongoing and future changes in the pan-Alpine area. Therefore, the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) project DOVE (Drilling Overdeepened Alpine Valleys) targets several of these glacial overdeepened sedimentary basins to recover their sedimentary infills. In the frame of the DOVE project, a 252 m long drill core of unconsolidated Quaternary sediments was recovered in northern Switzerland from an over 300 m deep glacially overdeepened structure (“Basadingen Trough”) formed by the former Rhine Glacier lobe system. The recovered sedimentary succession was divided into three stratigraphic units on the basis of lithological and petrophysical characteristics. The lowest unit, deposited below the fluvial base level, consists of an over 200 m thick succession of glacial to (glacio)lacustrine sediments and contains remains of possibly two glaciation cycles. Overlying this lowermost succession, an ∼ 37 m thick fluvial-to-glaciofluvial gravel deposit occurs, which correlates to a locally outcropping Middle Pleistocene formation (“Buechberg Gravel Complex”). The sediment succession is capped by an ∼ 11 m thick diamictic succession interpreted as the subglacial till from the later extensive glaciation, including the regional glaciation during the Last Glacial Maximum. The recovered sediment succession thus supports the proposed multi-phase origin of trough formation and its infill.

Introduction In recent decades, there has been extensive research on the association between Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Eating Disorders (ED), as well as the existence of sensory sensitivity alterations in both diagnostic groups. Objectives The present study aimed to examine the presence of autistic traits in a sample of adult women diagnosed with different ED, and the concurrent role of autistic traits and sensory sensitivity in both their eating disorder symptomatology and their autism-related eating behaviours. Methods Seventy-five women with different ED completed the Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26), the Autism Quotient (AQ), the Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale-Revised (RAADS-R), the Sensory Perception Quotient - Short Form 35 item (SPQ-SF35) and the Swedish Eating Assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorders (SWEAA), which investigates specific eating behaviour related to autism. Results 12% of the sample scored above the cut-off at both the AQ and the RAADS-R, while 68% scored above the cut-off at the RAADS-R only. We found an association between: i) hypersensitivity in the taste domain and ED severity and autistic-like eating behaviours; ii) hypersensitivity in the vision domain and autistic-like eating behaviours; iii) higher autistic traits and ED severity and autistic-like eating behaviours. Conclusions This study confirms the presence of autistic traits in patients with ED and underscores the significance of conducting additional systematical investigations on this topic across all diagnostic categories of ED. It is becoming progressively evident that identifying and measuring the levels of autistic traits in patients with ASD is crucial not only for a better understanding of the causes of these disorders, but also because it would help to tailor specific therapeutic interventions, especially considering the cognitive flexibility issues presented by these patients and the socio-emotional challenges they face. Additionally, this study has laid the foundation for further insights into the relationship between sensory sensitivity and dysfunctional eating behaviours typical of ED and ASD. Lake Petén Itzá (Guatemala) possesses one of the longest lacustrine sediment records in the northern Neotropics, which enabled study of paleoclimate variability in the region during the last ∼400 000 years. We used geochemical (Ti, Ca/(Ti+Fe) and Mn/Fe) and mineralogical (carbonates, gypsum, quartz, clay) data from sediment core PI-2 to infer past changes in runoff, lake evaporation, organic matter sources and redox conditions in the water column, caused by hydrological changes in the northern Neotropics during Marine Isotope Stages (MISs) 3–2. From 59 to 39 cal ka BP climate conditions were relatively wet, and the lake was marked by higher primary productivity and anoxic bottom waters. This wet environment was interrupted for two periods of possible low water level at 52 and 46 cal ka BP, when our data suggest higher evaporation, high terrestrial organic matter input and persistent oxic conditions. Between 39 and 23 cal ka BP, evaporation and input of terrestrial organic matter increased considerably, lake level declined, and lake bottom waters generally became oxic. These conditions reversed during the Last Glacial Maximum (23.5–18.0 cal ka BP), when runoff and lake productivity increased, and rising lake level caused bottom waters to again become anoxic. Comparison of our hydrologic proxy data with sea surface temperature anomalies between the eastern Pacific and the Caribbean suggests that changes in the intensity of the Caribbean Low-Level Jet (CLLJ) may have influenced long-term changes in runoff during MISs 3–2. Higher intensity of the CLLJ during the onset of MIS 3 and the LGM might have led to greater runoff into the lake, whereas the MIS 3–2 transition experienced a weaker CLLJ and consequently less runoff. A refined, high-resolution age–depth model for the PI-2 sediment core enabled us to identify millennial-scale Greenland interstadials (GIs) 14–2, Greenland stadials (GSs) 14–2 and Heinrich stadials (HSs) 5–1. In general, HSs and GSs were characterized by drier conditions. In contrast to GSs and HSs, GIs were characterized by greater runoff and overall wetter conditions, with the most pronounced GI peaks between 40 and 30 cal ka BP. Whereas GSs 9, 8, 7 and 6 began with abrupt increases in evaporation and ended with gradual increases in humidity, GSs 11 and 10 showed reversed patterns. The Lake Petén Itzá paleohydrology record, along with other regional paleoclimate records, led us to conclude that shifts in the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) altered moisture delivery to the lake on millennial timescales. During GSs and HSs, high evaporation from Petén Itzá (dry climate conditions) was associated with a more southerly position of the ITCZ, whereas wetter GIs prevailed during a more northerly ITCZ position. Although abrupt millennial-scale shifts in ITCZ and hydroclimate between GSs/HSs and GIs can be linked to instabilities in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), longer-term changes were additionally influenced by changes in atmospheric convection linked to modulations of the CLLJ in response to ΔSST between the equatorial Pacific and tropical Atlantic.

In order to investigate the electrochemical pitting corrosion in more detail, a micro-corrosion cell was developed, allowing real-time in situ optical observations of steel surfaces in direct correlation with electrochemical measurement results. In this study, the austenitic 1.4301–X5CrNi18-10 and the ferritic 1.4016–X6Cr17 stainless steel grades were examined in electrolytes containing chloride ions. The micro-corrosion cell revealed a stable pitting corrosion of the ferritic 1.4016 and metastable pitting corrosion of the austenitic 1.4301. The pits were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) in detail. A clear correlation between current peaks in the current density-potential curve and the growth of many small pits on the test surface was established and was identified as metastable pit growth. In general, the pitting corrosion potential increased as the diameter of the test surface decreased for both stainless steels. In contrast to the complex precipitates of 1.4301, chromium precipitates with a significantly higher amount was detected on the entire surface of the 1.4016. The corrosion initiation was identified at the interface between the precipitates and the base material for both stainless steels. By comparing both materials, the ferritic 1.4016 had a lower pitting corrosion potential than the austenitic 1.4301 under all test conditions.

Background: Attachment theory represents one of the most important references for the study of the development of an individual throughout their life cycle and provides the clinician with a profound key for the purposes of understanding the suffering that underlies severe psychopathologies such as eating disorders. As such, we conducted a cross-sectional study with a mixed-methods analysis on a sample of 32 young women with anorexia nervosa (AN); this study was embedded in the utilized theoretical framework with the following aims: 1. to evaluate the state of mind (SoM) in relation to adult attachment, assuming a prevalence of the dismissing (DS) SoM and 2. to analyze the linguistic attachment profile emerging from the transcripts of the AAIs. Methods: Interviews were transcribed verbatim, coded, and analyzed using the linguistic inquiry and word count (LIWC) method. Results: The results were observed to be consistent with the referenced literature. The prevalence of a DS SoM (68.75%) is observed in the study sample, whereas the results of the lexical analysis of the stories deviate from expectations. Notably, the lexical results indicate the coexistence of the dismissing and entangled aspects at the representational level. Conclusions: The study results suggest a high level of specificity in the emotional functioning of patients with AN, with a focusing on a pervasive control of emotions that is well illustrated by the avoidant/ambivalent (A/C) strategy described in Crittenden’s dynamic–maturational model. These findings and considerations have important implications for clinical work and treatment, which we believe must be structured on the basis of starting from a reappraisal of emotional content.

The sedimentary infill of glacially overdeepened valleys (i.e., structures eroded below the fluvial base level) is an excellent but yet underexplored archive with regard to the age, extent, and nature of past glaciations. The ICDP project DOVE (Drilling Overdeepened Alpine Valleys) Phase 1 investigates a series of drill cores from glacially overdeepened troughs at several locations along the northern front of the Alps. All sites will be investigated with regard to several aspects of environmental dynamics during the Quaternary, with focus on the glaciation, vegetation, and landscape history. Geophysical methods (e.g., seismic surveys), for example, will explore the geometry of overdeepened structures to better understand the process of overdeepening. Sedimentological analyses combined with downhole logging, analysis of biological remains, and state-of-the-art geochronological methods, will enable us to reconstruct the erosion and sedimentation history of the overdeepened troughs. This approach is expected to yield significant novel data quantifying the extent and timing of Middle and Late Pleistocene glaciations of the Alps. In a first phase, two sites were drilled in late 2021 into filled overdeepenings below the paleolobe of the Rhine Glacier, and both recovered a trough filling composed of multiphase glacial sequences. Fully cored Hole 5068_1_C reached a depth of 165 m and recovered 10 m molasse bedrock at the base. This hole will be used together with two flush holes (5068_1_A, 5068_1_B) for further geophysical cross-well experiments. Site 5068_2 reached a depth of 255 m and bottomed out near the soft rock–bedrock contact. These two sites are complemented by three legacy drill sites that previously recovered filled overdeepenings below the more eastern Alpine Isar-Loisach, Salzach, and Traun paleoglacier lobes (5068_3, 5068_4, 5068_5). All analysis and interpretations of this DOVE Phase 1 will eventually lay the ground for an upcoming Phase 2 that will complete the pan-Alpine approach. This follow-up phase will investigate overdeepenings formerly occupied by paleoglacier lobes from the western and southern Alpine margins through drilling sites in France, Italy, and Slovenia. Available geological information and infrastructure make the Alps an ideal area to study overdeepened structures; however, the expected results of this study will not be restricted to the Alps. Such features are also known from other formerly glaciated mountain ranges, which are less studied than the Alps and more problematic with regards to drilling logistics. The results of this study will serve as textbook concepts to understand a full range of geological processes relevant to formerly glaciated areas all over our planet.
