Abstract

This study focuses on the development of novel bio-composites using a silica matrix that provides dual functionality: as a hydrophobic surface treatment and as a binder for hemp-shiv. The hydrophilic nature of hemp shiv, a plant based aggregate, results in composites having poor interfacial adhesion, weak mechanical properties and long drying times. In this work, sol-gel process has been utilised to manufacture durable low density hemp based composites. Morphological characterisation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that hemp shiv was embedded well in the matrix. Detailed chemical analysis using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) indicate the presence of water soluble and ethanol soluble extractives leached from the hemp shiv which are incorporated into the silica matrix inducing the binding effect. The composites were water resistant and showed good mechanical performance having the potential to develop novel thermal insulation building materials.

43. The Presidents of the Institute of Wood Science

Abstract

The Institute of Wood Science (IWSc) represented the interests and knowledge of wood scientists and wood technologists in the UK and beyond between 1955 and 2009 when it merged with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). In that time 27 presidents served, from industry or academia, leading the IWSc and guiding decisions relating to education, communication and the award of professional qualifications. The broad history of the Institute has been documented in 30th- and 50th-anniversary reviews published in the IWSc Journal. However, the contribution of the presidents to the success of the institute, as well as their reputations in wood science, wood technology or industry, has not been recorded. Approaching the 70th anniversary of what is now the Wood Technology Group of IOM3, this paper reviews the circumstances under which the IWSc was created and examines the contribution of each of the presidents to the health and success of the institute.

Abstract

The mechanical performance of dark red meranti (Shorea spp.) containing structural finger joints was investigated in four-point bending. The influence of variation in density on the bending strength (MOR) and stiffness (MOE) of dark red meranti (DRM) was studied. The effect on these properties of variation in end pressure when bonding was examined. The orientation of finger joints and the effect of cross-sectional area of bonded joints on the bending properties were also investigated. The results of this study indicate a positive relationship between the density and the MOR of DRM specimens. Sufficiently high end pressure is needed to produce strong finger joints. The orientation of finger joints and the changes in cross-sectional area of bonded joints showed no influence on the MOR. The MOE of DRM was not affected by the finger jointing of the pieces. In conclusion, finger-jointed DRM exhibits potential for structural uses, particularly for glulam beams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
