This paper describes the step response of a hydrostatic thrust bearing with a self-controlled restrictor employing a floating disk. This type of bearing can achieve a very high static bearing stiffness by controlling the mass flow rate of the fluid entering the bearing clearance, using the floating disk. Many parameters affect the step-response characteristics of this type of bearings. Influences of each parameter on the step response are theoretically investigated, and theoretical and experimental results are compared in order to verify the theoretical predictions. It was consequently found that the step response of this hydrostatic thrust bearing with the self-controlled restrictor was stable over a wide range of values of design parameters.

This paper proposes a new type of a self-controlled restrictor which can achieve a very high bearing stiffness in hydrostatic bearings. This self-controlled restrictor employs a floating disk to control the mass flow rate of the oil entering the bearing clearance according to changes of the applied load. Furthermore, a hydrostatic bearing with this restrictor can theoretically achieve an infinite stiffness when the mass of a floating disk is assumed to be zero. The static characteristics of a rectangular hydrostatic thrust bearing with this self-controlled restrictor are theoretically and experimentally investigated. It was consequently shown that the proposed hydrostatic thrust bearing can achieve a very high stiffness (nearly infinite stiffness) in a very wide range of applied load independent of supply pressure.

Objectives: The vacuum erection device (VED) is a second-line treatment tool recommended in erectile dysfunction (ED) guidelines but has long been unavailable in Japan. A new VED, Vigor 2020 ® (A & HB Company Limited, Tokyo, Japan), has now been manufactured and received medical approval from the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency in Japan. We conducted a retrospective observational study of ED patients who used Vigor 2020 in clinical practice., Methods: We analyzed male ED patients aged ≥20 years treated with Vigor 2020 in our outpatient clinics. The primary endpoint was improvement of erection as evaluated by an Erection Hardness Score (EHS) of ≥1 point. Secondary endpoints were improvement of sexual function and adverse events as evaluated by the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and Male Sexual Health Questionnaire for assessing ejaculatory dysfunction (MSHQ-EjD)., Results: Thirty-three patients (mean age, 57.21 [27-86] years) could be evaluated before and after using Vigor 2020. Among the 16 patients with baseline EHS ≤2, 14 (93.33%) improved by ≥1 point, and 10 of these 16 patients (62.50%) improved to EHS ≥3 and could insert vaginally. Significant improvement was observed for IIEF total score and for the MSHQ-EjD in patients with an EHS of ≥3 after use of Vigor 2020. No patient experienced significant adverse events., Conclusions: The Vigor 2020 may be an efficacious treatment tool for ED. Chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma is a rare type of intracerebral hemorrhage. Reportedly, it is associated with vascular malformations, including arteriovenous malformations, cavernous hemangiomas, microaneurysms, and venous malformations. Recently, an association between chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma and stereotactic radiosurgery for arteriovenous malformations has been reported. In general, as the hematoma enlarges, symptoms progress slowly. In this report, we present a case of a 50-year-old woman who had undergone clivus chordoma resection and carbon ion therapy for the clivus respectively 27 and 20 years before developing chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma with rapidly progressing disturbance of consciousness. She was referred to our hospital because of difficulty walking due to left hemiparesis. Head computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a cystic lesion in the right temporal lobe with perifocal edema. On the second day of hospitalization, the patient's consciousness worsened. We suspected a malignant glioma and performed an emergency craniotomy; however, the pathological diagnosis was chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma. After the rehabilitation therapy, the patient became ambulatory and was discharged. To the date of reporting, the patient remained recurrence-free. Chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma may be due to invasive craniotomy or carbon ion therapy. Objective: To clarify the circadian rhythm of urination in hospitalized women with nocturia measured by toilet uroflowmetry and its age-related change., Methods: We evaluated 2602 urinations of 58 female patients (age, 68.4 ± 15.2 years) who were hospitalized in our institution for urological disease. We assessed voided volume (VV) as averages of every hour by generalized linear mixed models with an identity link function to adjust for personal bias and age. Maximum flow rate and voiding time were analyzed by the same method after adjustment for age, personal bias, and VV. We also compared these circadian rhythms between women <70 and ≥70 years., Results: VVs in the nighttime were significantly higher than that from 06:00-07:00 (205.6 ± 11.7 ml). Maximum flow rates in the afternoon were significantly higher than that from 06:00-07:00 (18.8 ± 0.93 ml/sec). Voiding time showed no statistically significant difference between the values at any time of day and that from 06:00-07:00. We also showed that the circadian rhythm of VV becomes less clear in the elderly women (P interaction = .0057). However, no significant difference was found in the maximum flow rate and voiding time regarding the pattern of the circadian rhythm between women <70 and ≥70 years old., Conclusion: The present study clearly showed a circadian rhythm of VV and maximum flow rate in hospitalized women with nocturia. Objectives: To clarify the efficacy of low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy for patients with erectile dysfunction, compare the efficacy between two types of lithotripters (ED1000 [focused type] and Renova [linear type]), and detect factors indicative of therapeutic gain with the treatment., Methods: This retrospective study included 76 patients (52.8 ± 11.7 years) treated by ED1000 (12 times over 9 weeks) and 484 patients (52.5 ± 11.6 years) treated by Renova (4 times over 4 weeks). Age, sexual symptoms scores, and blood examinations were assessed. Efficacy was judged by improvement of the scores and patient satisfaction and compared between patients at 1 month after treatment with the lithotripters. Independent factors influencing efficacy by Renova were also assessed., Results: Sexual symptom scores were improved significantly by both lithotripters, although the changes in the scores did not differ significantly between them. Efficacy rate as judged by patient satisfaction was 65.8% with the ED1000 and 71.1% with Renova, also without significant difference. Among several factors including age, sexual symptoms scores, endocrinological factors, metabolic factors, and the rate of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor use, only age was found to be an independent factor influencing the efficacy of Renova., Conclusion: We clearly showed the high efficacy of both lithotripters. Although the efficacy rate did not differ between them, we speculated that the fewer treatment sessions needed with the Renova versus the ED1000 would be a great advantage for patients. This study aimed to develop a metric for standardized and predicted carbapenem consumption using the Diagnosis Procedure Combination payment system database and patients' characteristics. Graphene/semiconductor Schottky junctions are an emerging field for high-performance optoelectronic devices. This study investigates not only the steady state but also the transient photoresponse of graphene field-effect transistor (G-FET) of which gate bias is applied through the Schottky barrier formed at an n-type Si/graphene interface with a thin oxide layer, where the oxide thickness is sufficiently thin for tunneling of the charge carrier. To analyze the photoresponse, we formulate the charge accumulation process at the n-Si/graphene interface, where the tunneling process through the SiO x layer to graphene occurs along with recombination of the accumulated holes and the electrons in the graphene at the surface states on the SiO x layer. Numerical calculations show good qualitative agreement with the experimentally obtained results for the photoresponse of G-FET.

We demonstrate the control of resonance characteristics of a drum-type graphene mechanical resonator in a nonlinear oscillation regime using the photothermal effect, which is induced by a standing wave of light between graphene and a substrate. Unlike the resonance characteristics of a conventional Duffing-type nonlinearity, those of the nonlinear oscillation regime are modulated by the standing wave of light with a contribution of the scattered light of an actuation laser, despite a slight variation of amplitude. Numerical calculations conducted with a combination of equations of heat and motion with the Duffing-type nonlinearity explain this modulation: the photothermal effect delays the modulation of graphene stress or tension., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Graphene is a promising material for use in photodetectors for the ultrawide wavelength region: from ultraviolet to terahertz. Nevertheless, only the 2.3% light absorption of monolayer graphene and fast recombination time of photo-excited charge restrict its sensitivity. To enhance the photosensitivity, hybridization of photosensitive material and graphene has been widely studied, where the accumulated photo-excited charge adjacent to the graphene channel modifies the Fermi level of graphene. However, the charge accumulation process slows the response to around a few tens of seconds to minutes. In contrast, a charge accumulation at the contact would induce the efficient light-induced modification of the contact resistance, which would enhance its photosensitivity. Herein, we demonstrate a highly photosensitive graphene field-effect transistor with noise-equivalent power of ~3 × 10(-15) W/Hz(1/2) and with response time within milliseconds at room temperature, where the Au oxide on Au electrodes modulates the contact resistance because of the light-assisted relaxation of the trapped charge at the contact. Additionally, this light-induced relaxation imparts an optical memory function with retention time of ~5 s. These findings are expected to open avenues to realization of graphene photodetectors with high sensitivity toward single photon detection with optical memory function.

On the basis of the non-covalent bond interactions in nucleic acids, we have synthesized a novel adenosine derivative tethering a phenyl group. Structure and thermal stability of the DNA duplexes bearing the adenosine derivative in the middle of a strand were investigated by CD spectra and the UV melting curves. We found that the conformation and the interactions of the duplexes were similar regardless of the nucleotide facing with the adenosine derivative in a duplex. This observation suggests the base pair-mimic geometry of the adenosine derivative accompanied with a conformational change of the nucleotide in the complementary strand.

Novel deoxyadenosine derivatives tethering a phenyl or naphthyl group by means of an amido linker have been synthesized, and these derivatives, stacking on the 5' end of a DNA duplex, provide free energy contributions equal to or greater than that of the Watson-Crick A/T base pair.

Development of a novel method for the synthesis of DNA conjugates is described. Oligonucleotides were successfully conjugated with a variety of functional molecules on a solid phase (Solid Phase Fragment Condensation) using an amino, a hydroxyl, a thiol, and a carboxyl group. DNA-peptide conjugate was obtained as a pure from by a single RPHPLC purification approximately in 20% yield. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the present method was effective for the preparation of conjugate molecules, DNA-sugar, DNA-polyamine, DNA-lipid and so on. The study to create new intelligent DNAs by accumulation various biofunctions on the molecule by SPFC is now in progress in our laboratory.

Oligodeoxynucleotides with RNA cleavage activity 1) were conjugated with amines and peptides by solid phase fragment condensation (SPFC). It was found that 29 mer DNA enzyme conjugated with spermine at its 5'-end showed higher affinity to the target RNA sequence and 40 times higher activity of cleavage than native DNA enzyme. It is also to be noted that conjugate DNA enzymes showed increased resistance against nuclease digestion.

A 26-year-old man presented with an epidermoid tumor of the fourth ventricle manifesting as headache with nausea and vertigo. Neurological examination revealed no cerebellar signs, except nystagmus. Bilateral vestibular impairment was identified by the caloric test. The tumor was removed via the midline suboccipital approach. The bilateral peripheral vestibular function recovered remarkably postoperatively. This marked improvement suggests that the bilateral vestibular impairment was caused by compression of the vestibular nuclei by the tumor.

Various types of DNA-peptide conjugates were synthesized by solid phase fragment condensation (SPFC). DNA-LNS (nuclear localizing signal) peptide conjugate was proved to be delivered and localized into cellular nucleus and exhibited higher antisense inhibitory effect against telomerase than antisense phosphorothioate DNA. In contrast, DNAzymes conjugated with NES (nuclear export signal) peptide was shown to be taken up and localized in cytoplasm. Inhibitory effect of the conjugate DNAzyme against BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase was evaluated to be more significant than the native DNAzyme.
