Abstract

The work operations in the quarry activities are the source of many physical agents such as dust and vibrations but especially noise. This last can have relevant negative effects they cause serious problems for the worker’s health. In order to prevent the hearing loss, the employer must provide to the workers the HPD (Hearing Protection Devices). They are inserted inside the ear following a specific procedure to ensure the maximum protection by the noise. For this reason, the use training represents an essential aspect. Also the material, which the device is made of, can influence strongly the actual noise attenuation. The study is based on tests with different HPD, some made of polyurethane and others by silicone. Two experimental campaigns were carried out under different conditions with the same measurement methodology. The results highlight the importance of the methodology used in the test and the relevant role of the use training.

Abstract

Introduction: In order to establish the acceptability of a hearing protector device (HPD) used in a given noisy environment, two key elements must be known with the highest possible accuracy: the insertion loss of the HPD and the associated variability. Methods leading to objective field measurements of insertion loss have become widely available in the last decade and have started to replace the traditional subjective “Real-Ear Attenuation at Threshold” (REAT) laboratory measurements. The latter have long been known to provide a gross overestimate of the attenuation, thus leading to a strong underestimate of the worker’s exposure to noise. Methods: In this work we present objective measurements of the insertion loss of an ear plug, carried out using the E-A-Rfit procedure by 3M on a large sample of 36 female and 64 male subjects. This large number of independent measurements has been exploited to calculate the distribution function of effective noise levels, that is noise levels that take into account the use of the HPD. The knowledge of the distribution function has in its turn allowed the calculation of the uncertainty on the effective noise levels. Results: This new estimate of uncertainty (6 to 7 dB) is significantly larger than most previous estimates, which range between 4 and 5 dB when using objective data but with an improper uncertainty propagation, and around 3 dB when using REAT subjective data. We show that the revised new estimate of uncertainty is much more realistic as it includes contributions that are missed by the other methods. Conclusions: By plugging this revised estimate of uncertainty into the criterion for checking the acceptability of the HPD, a better assessment of the actual protection provided by the HPD itself is possible.

Abstract

Occupational noise exposure in the workplace is linked with a range of negative effects on human health. Many researchers agree that the noise-induced hearing loss is the second most common form of sensorineural hearing deficit, after the illness of agerelated hearing loss. An extended exposure to occupational noise can generates devastating disability that is potentially 100% completely preventable. The hearing deficit begins at the higher frequencies and it develops gradually as a result of chronic exposure to excessive sound levels. In order to avoid these negative effects on the worker's health and to stop further progression of the damage, italian law establishes strict limits, with the aim that the effective exposure of a worker may overpass the limit values of LAeq = 87 dBA and Lpeak = 140 dBC. After the risk assessment, particularly at noisy workplaces, the employers generally provide workers the hearing protection devices (HPDs), but the employment of this device results to be useless if it is not used correctly. This study aims to the analyze the correct use of hearing protection devices (HPDs), to determine how his position can influence the noise damping and consequently the worker's noise exposure dose. The experimental campaign consists of different measures of the same noise source realized on many subjects with the same HPD type. The results obtained for different types of subjects point out that the use of the protection device can be useless if insertion procedure in the worker's ear is wrong. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
