Federal mandates (e.g., Every Student Succeeds Act [ESSA], 2015) require special educators to use evidence-based practices (EBP) when working with K-12 students. However, for this expectation to become a reality, teacher educators must make changes in educator preparation program (EPP) curriculum, policy, coursework, and clinical experiences (Kolb et al., 2018). The need for changesin EPP clinical experiences has been underscored by the Council for Exceptional Children’s (CEC’s) shift from knowledge to practice-based standards for special educators (CEC, 2020). Real-time performance feedback (PF) delivered via online bug-in-ear (BIE) technology is an EBP (Sinclair, 2020) for coaching and supervising during early, mid, and late clinical experiences. In this article,we offer a rationale for making widespread, digital-age changes to coaching and supervising, through online BIE; provide an overview of relevant research; and offer guidance and recommendations for successful online BIE integration during EPP clinical experiences.

Special education teachers in rural settings face unique challenges related to providing transition services to secondary students with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (IDD). Geographically isolated school districts tend to have limited collaborative partnership opportunities and access to quality professional development to offer teachers and paraeducators, including classroom-based coaching. Fortunately, advances in technology have shown eCoaching with Bug-in-Ear (BIE) technology to be a viable method for providing performance feedback (PF) to both teachers and paraeducators in real time without requiring the physical presence of the eCoach. This article examines literature specific to applying eCoaching procedures when teaching transition-age youth with IDD. Correspondingly, three related practice recommendations for using BIE in rural settings are offered. Our recommendations support practical application of eCoaching with BIE technology in rural settings for the purpose of improving transition-focused instruction and optimal student outcomes in secondary students with IDD.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of the abrupt transition from attending school face-to-face to participating in online learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic as reported by a parent of a student with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Design/methodology/approach A phone interview was conducted with the parent of a child with ASD. The semi-structured interview focused on how the child’s family was impacted when classes shifted to virtual from face-to-face learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings A total of four themes emerged from the interview. Three of these included adjustments to changes in routines and roles, instruction, and social interactions. A final theme involved the benefits and challenges that emerged following the transition to online learning for students with ASD. While we are in an unprecedented time with the COVID-19 global pandemic presenting understandable challenges, opportunities for and examples of effective virtual learning environments for students with ASD were reported in the parent interview and supported by the literature. Practical implications This research provides insight regarding the impact of COVID-19 and highlights elements that should be considered involving technology for students with ASD. Increased awareness regarding the benefits and contraindications of technology while teaching students with ASD can minimize the adverse effects and enhance the positive impact of technology in students with ASD. Originality/value This paper shares the experiences of one parent of a child with ASD and their experiences with technology and learning during COVID-19.

The ability to read promotes academic success and serves as an essential prerequisite skill for many postsecondary opportunities. However, developing proficient reading skills is particularly difficult for many individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Reading is an important life skill for all individuals, and it is essential for reading instruction to be grounded in research to achieve optimal learning outcomes. We conducted a review of the literature covering a 15-year period (2005–2020) to examine research measuring the effects of an evidence-based practice, constant time delay (CTD), when used as a reading intervention to teach participants with ID and/or ASD. Studies evaluated the acquisition of functional or academic reading skills across two instructional delivery methods: teacher-delivered and technology-based CTD. All reviewed research used a single case research design to experimentally validate the effects of CTD as a reading intervention, and findings across studies revealed a functional relationship between variables. That is, when applied as a reading intervention, CTD led to acquisition of academic or functional reading skills in participants with ID and/or ASD regardless of delivery method. Recommendations for research and practical application of CTD when teaching reading are provided.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of using video modeling (VM) to teach three young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID) to independently communicate their physical location via text and phone call. We used a multiple-probe research design across behaviors to evaluate the effects of the intervention. Data indicated most participants required noncontrolling prompts in addition to the VM to acquire and perform the task analysis (TA) steps with accuracy. Yet once participants reached criterion, they independently performed the multistep skills and the newly learned behaviors were generalized and maintained 6 weeks posttreatment. These results extend the potential utility of VM instruction. Implications for research and practical application are discussed.

Engaging in deliberate practice opportunities during special education teacher preparation may increase the implementation and sustainability of evidence-based practices with fidelity in K-12 classrooms. We used a concurrent multiple baseline design across participants to evaluate the effects of providing immediate feedback through eCoaching with online Bug-In-Ear (BIE) technology on special education teacher candidates’ acquisition and sustained use of behavior specific praise (BSP) during Mursion™ classroom simulations. We also measured equitable praise rates and used the Behavior Specific Praise Observational Tool (BSP-OT) to evaluate teacher candidates’ praise variety. Results showed a functional relation between the intervention and teacher candidates’ use of BSP. Maintenance, equity, and praise variety data indicated promising social validity findings.

Young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and comorbid intellectual disability (ID) are vastly underrepresented in the area of postsecondary employment. This study evaluated the effectiveness and perceptions of an intervention package incorporating constant time delay (CTD) and eCoaching to promote employment skill acquisition. CTD was used by a teacher interventionist to instruct four student participants with ASD and ID in a community setting, while concurrently receiving real-time performance feedback through eCoaching. A multiple probe across participants design was used to evaluate the impact of the intervention on skill acquisition while simultaneously measuring CTD implementation fidelity. Results showed rapid skill acquisition and generalization and follow-up data were positive. CTD was implemented with fidelity and rated favorably among participants.

Independently performing essential daily living skills enables individuals to become more self-sufficient adults. Those with intellectual disability (ID) tend to require direct instruction and repetition to successfully aquire everyday tasks. Many adults with ID continue to show deficits in this domain, affecting independent living abilities (Luftig & Muthert, 2005). Video-based instruction holds promise in increasing autonomous functioning while decreasing reliance on staff. This review of the literature examines the effectiveness of using video instruction (VI) to teach daily living skills to adolescents and young adults with ID. Acquisition, generalization, and maintenance of target skills are examined across the literature. A total of 12 empirical articles on VI were reviewed, all published between 2006-2017. Findings support the use of VI when teaching daily living skills to adolescents and adults with mild or moderate ID. Implications for research and practice are offered.
