Abstract

Background Non-human primate (NHP) could be an interesting model for osteoarthritis (OA) longitudinal studies but standard medical imaging protocols are not able to acquire sufficiently high-resolution images to depict the thinner cartilage (compared to human) in an in vivo context. The aim of this study was thus to develop and validate the acquisition protocols for knee joint examination of NHP using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 1.5 T and X-ray micro-computed tomography arthrography (µCTA). Methods The first phase of the study focused on developing dedicated in vivo HR-MRI and µCTA protocols for simultaneous acquisitions of both knee joints on NHP. For MR, a dedicated two-channel receiver array coil and acquisition sequence were developed on a 1.5 T Siemens Sonata system and tuned to respect safety issues and reasonable examination time. For µCTA, an experimental setup was devised so as to fulfill similar requirements. The two imaging protocols were used during a longitudinal study so as to confirm that repeated injections of loxaglic acid (contrast agent used for µCTA) didn't induce any bias in cartilage assessment and to compare segmentation results from the two modalities. Lateral and medial cartilage tibial plateaus were assessed using a common image processing protocol leading to a 3D estimation of the cartilage thickness. Results From HR-MRI and µCTA images, thickness distributions were extracted allowing for proper evaluation of knee cartilage thickness of the primates. Results obtained in vivo indicated that the µCTA protocol did not induce any bias in the measured cartilage parameters and moreover, segmentation results obtained from the two imaging modalities were consistent. Conclusions MR and µCTA are valuable imaging tools for the morphological evaluation of cartilage in NHP models which in turn can be used for OA studies.

Abstract

International audience; The feasibility of cointegration of new capacitors, named “through silicon capacitors” (TSCs) with “through silicon vias” in silicon interposers has recently been demonstrated. Two architectures of TSC are extensively investigated in this paper: “axial TSC” whose electrodes are connected on either sides of the silicon interposer and “radial TSC” with electrodes both connected to the metal layers of the back end of line. A general modeling method based on distributed cell segmentation is proposed for both architectures. Validation is performed by measurements from 1 kHz to 40 GHz (above the resonance frequency of the components). A comparative study between radial and axial architectures is performed, leading to the prediction of the performances of those new components. Finally, design rules are established for future integration for power delivery networks decoupling applications.

Abstract

International audience; During magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations, the average specific absorption rate (SAR) of the whole body is calculated as an index of global energy deposition in biological tissue without taking into account the presence of metallic implants or conductive materials. However, this global SAR calculation is not sufficient to ensure patient safety and a local SAR measurement should be carried out. Several measurement techniques have already been used to evaluate the local SAR, in particular electric field (E-field) probes, but the accuracy of the measurements and the resolutions (spatial and temporal) depend strongly on the measurement method/probe. This work presents an MR-compatible, subcentimeter probe based on an electro-optic (EO) principle enabling a real-time measurement of the local E-field during MRI scans. The experiments using these probes were performed on two different MR systems (preclinical and clinical) having different static magnetic field strengths and with different volume coil geometries. The E-field was measured with unloaded (in air) and loaded volume coils in order to assess the sensing characteristics of the optical probe. The results show an excellent linearity between the measured E-field and the radiofrequency (RF) magnetic field in both experimental conditions. Moreover, the distribution of the E-field throughout the volume coil was experimentally determined and was in good agreement with numerical simulations. Finally, we demonstrate through our measurements that the E-field depends strongly on the dielectric properties of the medium.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we demonstrate the effectiveness of an active optical detuning circuit for magnetic resonance imaging endoluminal receiver coil. Three endoluminal coils prototypes were built: a coil without any detuning circuit, a coil with a galvanic (classic) detuning circuit using a PIN diode, and a coil with an optical detuning circuit using two photodiodes in parallel with a PIN diode. These coils were built and characterized on a laboratory experimental bench. Then, an in vitro experiment was performed with a 3.0 T MR system to evaluate the impact of the endoluminal receiver coils in detuned phase on the image uniformity distribution measured using the body coil. Next, the endoluminal coil was used as a receiver coil to compare the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distribution based on iso-contour maps. On experimental bench, the results show an increase delay of the switching times (tuned-detuned or detuned-tuned) for optical-detuned coils of about 10 μs due to the electro-optical circuits, delay still compatible with requirements. When the body coil is used as a transceiver, the SNR uniformity is similar whether the galvanic or the optical detuning circuit is used. Finally, the SNR iso-contours of the different endoluminal coils prototypes are comparable.

Abstract

A pigtailed Ti:LiNbO3 waveguide is here associated to a specific nuclear magnetic resonant coil to perform a low invasive magnetic field measurement. The developed device exploits a passive electro-optic transduction between the measured magnetic field and polarization state modulation of a laser probe beam. Because of the use of integrated optics, the coil electromotive force induces a dramatically enhanced electric field, thus leading to sensitivity improvement. A minimum detectable magnetic field lower than 60 fT \(\,\cdot \,\) Hz \(^{-1/2}\) is achieved at the resonant frequency of 128 MHz. A dynamic range exceeding 100 dB is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract

International audience; An electrooptic transduction is here used to perform a low invasive characterization of the magnetic field in the context of magnetic resonance imaging. A resonant coil is coupled to a passive electrooptic crystal and the electromotive force of the magnetic field sensor is converted into a polarization state modulation of a laser probe beam. The optical conversion is demonstrated and lead to a fiber remote measurement of the magnetic field. The setup sensitivity and dynamics are finally dramatically enhanced using a LiNbO3 integrated waveguide. The minimum detectable field is as low as 60 fT.Hz-1/2 and the dynamics exceeds 100 dB.

Abstract

International audience; — In this paper, we demonstrate the use of a LiTaO 3 crystal associated with a typical nuclear magnetic resonant loop coil to perform an optically remote radio frequency magnetic-field characterization. The whole transduction scheme is theoretically and experimentally studied. The measurement dynamics reaches 60 dB. The minimum detectable magnetic field is lower than 1 nT, which corresponds to an induced inner crystal electric field as low as 30 mV/m. To evaluate the spatial potentialities of the sensor, a 1-D mapping of the field along an asymmetric butterfly-shaped loop coil is performed. The result is in good agreement with finite-difference time-domain simulations and demonstrates the vectorial behavior of the sensor device.

Abstract

International audience; In Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), multi-channel coil arrays are increasingly being used to improve Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) in order to increase spatial and/or temporal image resolution. Recent decoupling technique allows conception of two-channel surface transceiver coil arrays; this technique based on common conductor does not require additional preamplifier for the decoupling between elements. In this case the coil array loops are directly connected to the independent transmit/receive switches and preamplifiers of the MR system. Using this common conductor decoupling technique, a topology of a four-channel coil array was developed and described in this paper. A four-channel surface receiver coil array was designed to perform the simultaneous acquisition of both rat knee joints at 7T. Without the use of additional preamplifiers, a good decoupling between channels was obtained and very high spatial resolution 3D images with a voxel size of 49 × 49 × 98 µm 3 were achieved in 1h22min scan time. Acquisitions allowed the quantification of cartilage morphological parameters such as thickness and volume

International audience; In the field of small-animal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), multi-channel coils are increasingly being used. Two-channel coils based on common conductor between the two elements are not considerably used and theoretical equations are not explicitly given. In this work, the design of a two-channel NMR coil based on common conductor for imaging applications have been carried out using an impedance transformation approach. The equations and simulations results at an operating frequency of 300 MHz are confirmed by the characterization of the two-channel receiver coil prototype.

Abstract

The recent advancement in MRI systems and the increase of the static magnetic field strength were accompanied by a strong concern about the effect of RF electromagnetic fields on patients. The effect can be increased by the use of conductive elements inside the volume coil as in the case of endoluminal coils used to analyze digestive walls. These coils lead to an increase of the local SAR which is induced by RF electric field in the presence of the coaxial cable connecting the coil to the MR system, resulting in strong local heating. Giving that these coils have the potential to present a real benefit to the patient, it worth to overcome these limitations. Accordingly, the first objective of the thesis is the development of a fully optical endoluminal receiver coil. An optical active detuning system has been developed and characterized. The NMR images show a signal-to-noise ratio distribution similar to that obtained with conventional detuning techniques, thus validating the efficiency of the optical detuning. Concerning the electro-optical conversion and the optical transmission of the NMR signal, experiments were performed to overcome constraints related to the use of waveguide for electro-optical conversion by Pockels effect. Moreover, the importance of monitoring global and local SAR during MRI exams remains a need which is not limited only to the endoluminal coils. The second objective of the thesis is then the experimental validation of an electro-optical probe for real-time measurements of RF electric field. This probe can measure the RF electric field in air and in biological media at 3 T and 4.7 T MRI systems and allows the estimation of the local SAR, Le développement de systèmes IRM à plus haut champ magnétique statique s'est accompagné d'une interrogation légitime concernant l'effet des champs électromagnétiques RF sur les patients. L'effet peut être renforcé par l'introduction d'éléments conducteurs à l'intérieur de la bobine RF comme c'est le cas pour les capteurs endoluminaux utilisés pour l'analyse des parois digestives. Ces capteurs entraînent des risques d'échauffements locaux élevés pour le patient en raison du TAS local induit par le champ électrique RF en présence d'un fil conducteur. Ces capteurs ayant le potentiel de présenter un bénéfice pour le patient, il est nécessaire de s'affranchir de ces limitations. Le premier objectif de la thèse est le développement d'un capteur endoluminal à liaisons optiques. Un dispositif de découplage actif optique a été développé et caractérisé. Les images RMN in vitro montrent une distribution du RSB comparable au découplage classique, validant ainsi l'efficacité du découplage optique. Concernant la transmission optique du signal RMN, des travaux ont été réalisés afin de s'affranchir des contraintes liées à l'utilisation d'un guide d'onde pour la conversion électro-optique par effet Pockels. Le capteur a été rendu plus compact. En revanche, l'importance de contrôler le TAS local dans des conditions expérimentales données demeure un besoin ne s'arrêtant pas à ceux des capteurs endoluminaux. Le second objectif est donc la validation expérimentale d'une sonde électro-optique pour la mesure du champ électrique RF durant un examen IRM. Cette sonde a permis d'effectuer des mesures du champ électrique dans l'air et dans différents milieux biologiques à 3 T et 4,7 T et estimer le TAS local

Abstract

Le dépistage du cancer colorectal par IRM à des stades précoces exige l'obtention des images avec une résolution spatiale suffisante. L'acquisition d'images de résolution spatiale submillimétrique peut être réalisée avec des capteurs endoluminaux placés au plus proche de la zone à explorer. Les développements de ce type de capteur ont été compromis par des aspects liés à la sécurité du patient en raison des échauffements localisés qui ont lieu avec une liaison galvanique reliant le capteur au système d'imagerie. Pour pallier ces problèmes de sécurité, nous proposons de développer un capteur magnétique déporté grâce à une transmission par fibre optique. Deux points importants doivent être traités pour réaliser ce capteur : le découplage actif de la boucle endoluminale et le transport optique de l'information RMN.Un système de découplage actif optique a été réalisé puis caractérisé sur banc et en IRM (in-vitro). Les résultats montrent que le découplage optique est efficace et ses performances sont comparables avec un système de découplage conventionnel.Le transport optique du signal RMN a été réalisé en couplant un cristal Electro-Optique à la boucle résonnante endoluminale. Ce cristal permet une modulation de l'état de polarisation du faisceau optique. Les résultats de caractérisation du capteur en termes de linéarité, dynamique et sensibilité sur un banc optique montrent sa faisabilité.; Detection of colorectal cancer by MRI at is early stages requires images with high spatial resolution. Submillimetric spatial resolution images can be achieved with MRI endoluminal receiver coil placed as close as possible to the region of interest. However using this type of receiver is laways limited by security issues related to patient safety due to licalized heating which appear with a galvanic connection between the receiver coil and the imaging system. To address this problem, we propose to develop an non-invasive optically deported characterization of NMR Radiofrequency signal. Two important points need to be adressed to achieve this receiver : active endoluminal loop decoupling and optical signal transport.A system of active optical decoupling has been achieved ans characterized on bench and in MRI (in-vitro). The results show that the optical decoupling is efficent and its performance is comparable to a conventional decoupling system ;The optical transmission of the NMR signal has been achieved by associating a passive Electro-Optical crystal transducer to the resonant receiver coil. This crystal allows a modulation of the polarization state of the laser probe beam. The results of sensor’s characterization on an optical bench concerning is linearity, its sensitivity and its dynamic, show the feasability.
