1. Learning Problems among Adolescents in Residential Youth Care

Abstract

Limited education and educational achievement are among the many negative outcomes for adolescents in residential youth care (RYC). Because of former abuse and neglect this high-risk group is expected to have many educational problems, including learning disorders (LDs) and psychiatric disorders (PDs), which may go unrecognized, resulting in insufficient educational adaptations and increased strain for the adolescents. This study was conceived to investigate unrecognized LDs and their associations with an expected excess of PDs, social problems and weak academic performance using LD indicators based on DSM-IV criteria for LDs. The initial results led us to question the validity of these indicators blocking the possibility to detect unrecognized LDs and to reinterpret the indicators of unrecognized LDs as indicators of ‘specific underachievement not related to LD’. The second analytic stage showed an excess of PDs, social problems and weak academic performance, but no excess of LDs except for dyscalculia. The prevalence of underachievement unrelated to LDs was 14.0% across four subtypes. This specific underachievement was associated with social problems, ADHD and substance disorders. Weak academic achievement was predicted by low IQ, specific underachievement (not related to LDs), known LDs, social problems and substance disorders among adolescents in RYC must be evaluated from a wider perspective than LDs, by including their social problems, psychiatric problems and other developmental consequences of their history of abuse and neglect. Abstract

Few studies have focused the association between bullying and psychiatric disorders in clinical samples. The aim of this study was to examine if bullying behaviour was associated with psychiatric disorders and school well-being.The cross-sectional study was part of a health survey at St. Olav's University Hospital. The sample consisted of 685 adolescent patients aged 13-18 years who completed an electronic questionnaire. Clinical diagnoses were collected from clinical records.In this clinical psychiatric sample, 19% reported being bullied often or very often, and 51% reported being bullied from time to time. Logistic regression analyses showed associations between being a victim and having a mood disorder, and between being involved in bullying behaviour and reporting lower scores on school well-being. No difference was found in bullying behaviour on gender, age and SES.The risk of being a victim was high among adolescents in this clinical sample, especially among patients with mood disorders. Any involvement in bullying behaviour was associated with reduced school well-being.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine relationships between bullying and suicidal ideation. A total of 2,464 adolescents in Norway were assessed at two time points, 1 year apart [i.e., at ages 14 (T1) and 15 (T2)], with identical questionnaires. Suicidal ideation was measured by four items including both active and passive suicidal thoughts. ANOVA and standard linear regression methods were applied. Both bullied adolescents and adolescents who were aggressive toward others had significantly higher levels of suicidal ideation (p < 0.001) at age 14 (T1) than noninvolved adolescents. In the group being bullied, girls had higher levels of suicidal ideation than boys did. This was not the case for the group of adolescents who were the aggressors. In cross-sectional multivariate analyses, both being bullied and being aggressive toward others were significant (p < 0.001) predictors of suicidal ideation at age 14 (T1), when gender, age and socioeconomic status, and depressing symptom levels were controlled for. In the controlled longitudinal multivariate analyses, being bullied (p < 0.001) at age 14 (T1) predicted suicidal ideation at age 15 (T2), while aggressiveness toward others did not. Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the views of parents and caregivers on the optimal age for enrolment in childcare. The sample consisted of 41 parents of children aged 18 months or less who were in childcare (22 boys and 19 girls), and 34 of their caregivers. Parents and caregivers were interviewed using a semi-structured interview. Both parents and caregivers found the questions difficult to answer; individual differences between children were mentioned as one of the reasons. Many of the parents and caregivers suggested an enrolment age of 12–18 months. An interesting difference occurred between the two groups: five (13%) of the parents suggested enrolling children before the age of one year, such as at 9–10 months of age, but none of the caregivers wanted children enrolled before the age of one year.

Abstract

Longitudinal associations between being bullied during adolescence and suicide ideations, self-harm, and suicide attempts into young adulthood were examined. A large representative sample was examined in 1998 (N = 2,464, MA 13.7), 1999/2000, and 2012 to reassess the outcome measures. At all ages, bullied participants showed more suicide ideation, self-harm, and suicide attempts, regardless of gender. Bullied females showed a decrease in suicide ideation from adolescence to adulthood, while bullied males showed an increase in suicide attempts in the same time period. Being bullied in adolescence strongly predicts suicidal behavior and self-harm. Preventive efforts might reduce the risk of later suicidality.

Abstract

Successful adaptation to the environment requires strategies to cope with stressful situations. The aim of this study was to examine the role of stressful life events in coping strategies during early adolescence. A representative sample of 2464 adolescents in Norway were assessed at two time-points, one year apart (i.e., at T1, mean age 13.7 years, and at T2, mean age 14.9 years), with identical questionnaires. The participation rate was 88.3% at T1. Stressful life events and daily hassles were measured by questionnaires constructed for this study. Coping with stress was measured by a modified version of the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), which measures three coping dimensions: emotional, task and avoidance coping. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (MFQ). Standard multiple linear regression methods were applied. Different domains of stressful life events were associated with the coping strategies, and these relationships differed at various time-points by gender. In sum, school stress and stressful life events in one's network (network stress) was associated with coping strategies more strongly among girls, while family and miscellaneous stress showed a stronger association among boys. These relationships were partly mediated by depressive symptom levels, more strongly in cross-sectional than in longitudinal analyses. However, daily hassles seemed to represent smaller events of no importance in coping strategies. In preventive work, reducing stressful events, treating depression and teaching healthier coping strategies are important.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine coping styles among young adolescents involved in bullying, both as victims or aggressors, and the rela-tionships between coping styles and depressive symptom levels. The possible moderating and mediating roles of coping in the relationships between bullying involvement and depression are also investigated. A representative community sample of 2464 adolescents was assessed. Coping styles were measured by the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Mood and Feelings Questionnaire. Analysis of variance and standard lin- ear regression methods were applied. Adolescents being bullied or being aggressive toward others both showed more emotional coping than did noninvolved adolescents (p< 0.001). Being bullied and high emotional, low task, and high avoidant coping styles were independently related to more depressive symptoms. The association between being bullied and depressive symptoms was both moderated and partially mediated by emotional coping. in press - 12 months embargo

9. Relationships between young children in full-time day care and their caregivers: a qualitative study of parental and caregiver perspectives

Abstract

We studied the quality of caregiver–child relationships from the perspectives of parents and caregivers of young children in full-time day care. The sample consisted of 41 parents of children aged two years or younger (22 boys and 19 girls) in day care, and 35 of their caregivers. Parents and caregivers were interviewed. Parents and caregivers appeared to have up-to-date knowledge about caregiver–child relationships and about their importance. However, in evaluating the quality of the relationship between the individual child and its caregivers, both parties appeared to be more positive in their judgements than previous research would suggest. Caregivers are even more positive in their evaluations than parents. Day-care centres lack concrete assessment tools that might also reveal negative aspects of the relationship between caregivers and young children.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the experience of parents and caregivers regarding young children in day care. The tiredness of children after day-care attendance was explored. In the autumn of 2009, 41 parents and 35 caregivers of children aged 1.5 years or younger living in the city of Trondheim and nearby communities were assessed using a semi-structured qualitative interview. There was agreement among parents and caregivers that children became very tired after full-time care. In spite of the good quality of the care, with a relatively low child/adult ratio and very experienced caregivers with high educational qualifications, most children became very tired at the end of the stay. Tiredness in children also seemed to accumulate during the week and reached its peak on Fridays. The children adjusted well to care; however, they got very tired when the stay lasted a full day. Children who were picked up somewhat earlier did not exhibit the same level of tiredness.

11. Emotional and Behavioral Problems Among School Adolescents With and Without Reading Difficulties as Measured by the Youth Self-Report: A One-Year Follow-Up Study

Abstract

In the present study of Norwegian adolescents aged 12–15 years, adolescents with reading difficulties (RD) were compared with adolescents without RD on emotional and behavioral problems. Of this group, 191 (7.8%) adolescents reported having RD at T1. At both time points, when compared with the non-RD group, those in the RD group had significantly higher internalizing and externalizing scale scores, a greater number of total problems, and higher scores on all subscales of the YSR. The number of social problems decreased from T1 to T2 for both groups. While externalizing scale scores did not change for the RD group, these problems increased for adolescents without RD. Having RD predicted higher levels of social problems after one year in multivariate analysis controlled for other problems and confounding variables.

Abstract

This thesis aims to examine school-related correlates and risk factors in the development of depressive symptoms among 2464 school adolescents in middle Norway. Correlates and possible risk factors for depressive symptoms and other aspects of emotional/behavioural problems among adolescents with self-reported reading difficulties (RD) in the same sample of school adolescents and among young adults who received a diagnosis of dyslexia/RD in childhood were studied. Possible confounding factors were assessed, and a gender perspective was taken.All school variables (i.e. high levels of school stress, low class wellbeing and teacher support and school grades) were related to depressive symptom levels on the Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (MFQ) for all adolescents. Cross-sectionnally, low teacher support showed the strongest association with depressive symptoms. MFQ scores at T1 predicted depressive symptom levels one year later among both genders. Among girls, in addition, three of the school variables, including teacher support, predicted depressive symptom levels in the same period.Adolescents with RD reported more school stress, lower school grades and parental SES, feeling less accepted by peers, lower functioning level and more use of help for mental health problems during the last 12 months. They also reported higher emotional and behavioural problem levels on all Youth Self Report (YSR) scales at both time-points. Although the level of problems in the RD group tended to decrease, among non-RD adolescents level of problems overall increased, especially externalizing scores. More adolescents with RD than those with non-RD, 41.8% vs. 4.2%, respectively, had started special education during the last 12 months. Having RD predicted levels of future social problems. Receiving special education moderated the effects of RD on later social problems. Former psychiatric patients with dyslexia assessed in childhood reported lower levels of educational attainment as well as lower satisfaction with health, friends and education in young adulthood as compared to a “school group” of dyslexic students and a normative sample. Both dyslexic groups showed more general distress than those in the normative group.It is concluded that subjects with RD/dyslexia tend to face life-long problems displayed in many-faced aspects. Further studies on the full complex of reading as a life-long problem disclosing different problems at different stages are needed. Teacher support is crucial and the contents and the quality of support offered to RD/dyslexic children should be further examined and longitudinal studies are needed.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to examine correlates of self-reported depressive symptoms within the school area, and possible predictors of change in depressive symptom levels over a 1-year period in a large representative sample of 12 to 15-year-old adolescents in central Norway. The school variables were: school stress, class wellbeing, teacher support, and grades. Possible confounding factors were age, SES, ethnicity, and parental divorce. We also examined the strengths of these relationships. In the cross-sectional multivariate analyses of the whole sample, at time-point one (T1), all four school factors were independently associated with depressive symptom levels at small to moderate levels. In the longitudinal multivariate analyses of the whole sample, self-reported depressive symptom levels at time-point two (T2) were predicted by depressive symptom levels at T1, gender and teacher support. For girls, three of the school variables significantly predicted depressive symptom levels at T2, while this was not the case for boys. Prevention in schools might be of importance.

16. Academic Achievements of High‐ability Students in Egalitarian Education: a study of able 16‐year‐old students in Norway

Forty‐three high‐ability students were selected through tests of analytic ability at 10 and 12 years of age; school achievement data were collected when they graduated from middle school when they were 15‐16 years old, and in the same year they answered a general‐knowledge test and a questionnaire about their activities, attributions and self‐evaluations regarding past and future achievements. The ability data showed small sex differences. Nevertheless, the 23 boys did better in most academic subjects; in mathematics 3‐4 times as many boys as girls obtained top grades. Boys also excelled in general factual knowledge. Parents ‘ educational resources had a correlation of 0.60 with school achievement. Their academic achievements were related to the reported effort, work habits, attributions, and to the other self‐evaluations. Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between being bullied and aggressive behavior and self-reported mental health problems among young adolescents. A representative population sample of 2,464 young Norwegian adolescents (50.8% girls) aged 12–15 years was assessed. Being bullied was measured using three items concerning teasing, exclusion, and physical assault. Self-esteem was assessed by Harter’s self-perception profile for adolescents. Emotional and behavioral problems were measured by the Moods and Feelings Questionnaire (MFQ) and the youth self-report (YSR). Aggressive behavior was measured by four items from the YSR. One-tenth of the adolescents reported being bullied, and 5% reported having been aggressive toward others during the past 6 months. More of the students being bullied and students being aggressive toward others reported parental divorce, and they showed higher scores on all YSR subscales and on the MFQ questions, and lower scores on the global self-worth subscale (Harter) than students not being bullied or aggressive. A few differences emerged between the two groups being bullied or being aggressive toward others: those who were aggressive showed higher total YSR scores, higher aggression and delinquency scores, and lower social problems scores, and reported higher scores on the social acceptance subscale (Harter) than bullied students. However, because social problems were demonstrated in both the involved groups, interventions designed to improve social competence and interaction skills should be integrated in antibullying programs.

18. A thirteen-year follow-up study of young Norwegian adults with dyslexia in childhood: reading development and educational levels

Abstract

As part of a larger follow-up study, 75 students were diagnosed with dyslexia at 10 years of age. At the end of secondary school, grades for the whole cohort of 16-year olds were examined. At age 23 the whole study group responded to a questionnaire and the subgroup with dyslexia who responded to this questionnaire were invited to come for testing and interviews. The persistence of dyslexia into young adulthood and educational levels were examined. The results showed that almost all students still suffered dyslexia and showed lower decoding ability. Abstract

The present study is a follow-up of two different groups of young adults with a history of dyslexia problems in childhood. Group A was drawn from a larger longitudinal study where students were diagnosed with dyslexia at age 10. Group B was recruited at a child psychiatric clinic and also had dyslexic problems. Measures of educational level, life satisfaction and psychosocial factors were applied. The assessment was carried out by means of tests, questionnaires and personal interviews. The results showed lower levels of educational attainment in group B as well as lower satisfaction with health, friends and education compared to group A and a normative group. Both dyslexic groups showed more psychiatric problems than those in the normative sample.
