In the aerial performance THAW, from Legs on the Wall Collective (2021), three heroines fight against the loss of their ice environment. Through de-humanisation and de-scaling, the performance suggests a post-anthropocentric worldview and makes complex scientific findings on the entanglements of ecosystems sensually accessible. By stressing the performers’ physical challenges and risks, the threat of climate change is mirrored and transformed into a bodily experience for the audience. Thus, THAW communicates scientific knowledge and fosters the necessity to act. This is highly relevant for w/k as it shows how science and research currently inspire and shape ecocritical performance art.

This paper examines the five different Thule postal stamps which circulated from 1935 to 1936 between the trading post of Thule (which is the Danish name for the settlement of Uummannaq in Northwest Greenland, today Thule Air Base) and the Cape York post office in Copenhagen. The images on the stamps not only concentrate and visualize the complex colonial history between Greenland and Denmark. Instead, they also dynamize and preserve historical power relations by making them physically and visually tangible to this day. The stamps bear witness to infra-structures of cultural exchange, which were strongly controlled by the Danish side. They are often overlooked testimonies of everyday communication and mark colonial relations as ongoing and still powerful forces. What is more, the stamps provide their own agency as cultural-creating forces which sheds a new light to the history of Western modernization and its heritage.

Our newest member to the w/k editorial team introduces herself: the art historian and scholar of Visual Cultural Studies, Anne Hemkendreis. In conversation with Anna-Sophie Jürgens, she talks about her new series Ice as an Agent of Aesthetic Science Communication, which explores the mediation and generation of environmental knowledge at the interface between art and science, contributing to a rising ecological awareness within society.

Der US-Amerikaner Wilson A. Bentley gilt heute als einer der ersten Atmosphärenforscher. Seine Fotomikrographien von Eiskristallen zeugen von einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit der physischen Dimension von Naturbetrachtung und der (Un-) Möglichkeit subjektunabhängiger Forschung. Als frühe Beispiele sog. SciArt sind Bentleys Fotomikrographien Zeugnisse einer historisch engen Verbindung von Kunst und Wissenschaft. Gemäß der w/k-Systematik sind Bentleys Fotomikrographien der kunstbezogenen Wissenschaft zuzuordnen. Während Bentley selbst als ein ästhetisch verfahrender Meteorologe bezeichnet werden kann, sind seine Fotografien uneindeutige Schwellenphänomene. Sie betonen die Bedeutung des Ästhetischen im Bereich der Vermittlung wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse.

The US-American Wilson A. Bentley is today considered one of the first atmospheric scientists. His photomicrographs of ice crystals testify to an intensive examination of the physical dimension of observing nature and the impossibility of subject-independent research. As early examples of so-called SciArt, Bentley’s photomicrographs are evidence of a historically close connection between art and science. According to the w/k classification, Bentley’s photomicrographs fall into the category of Art-Related Scientists. While Bentley himself can be described as an aesthetically proceeding meteorologist, his photographs are ambiguous threshold phenomena. They demonstrate the importance of aesthetics in the communication of scientific knowledge.

Der Artikel untersucht den Einfluss von Zirkusperformances als moderne Unterhaltungsform industrieller Metropolen auf Pariser Künstler des 19. Jahrhunderts. Insbesondere Vorstellungen von LuftartistInnen ermöglichten Malern die scheinbare Erfahrung von Schwerelosigkeit, die zu einer Reformulierung des Verhältnisses von Figur und Grund führte und das Verständnis von Malerei als ein von der Schwerkraft befreites Medium etablierte. Der Rückgriff auf ikonographische Formeln aus der barocken Illusionsmalerei in Kombination mit einer aus künstlichen Milieus wie dem Aquarium entlehnten naturhaften Ästhetik führte zu einer hybriden Darstellungsweise der weiblichen Artistinnen zwischen Transzendenz und Animalismus. Der Zirkus wurde damit zu einer Metapher für die moderne Malerei als Ort der technischen Visualisierung eines unauflöslichen Amalgams aus Realem und Fiktivem.
