Rising healthcare costs and vast business opportunities in health markets have resulted in a great demand to enhance innovation creation. However, innovation development in healthcare is challenging because of the fragmented and complicated context. Potential means to tackle the challenges include utilising the concepts of open innovation and co-creation, which require organisations to develop new roles and relationships with multiple stakeholders. This paper analyses a 12-month co-creation project where a new collaboration model for healthcare innovations was developed by a hospital, research partners, and companies. We demonstrate how organisations experiment with collaborative innovation in the healthcare context, and what was learned from this experimentation. The study utilises an action research approach and a case study strategy. The co-creation model applied can produce innovations that meet the end-users’ needs, but successful implementation requires careful planning, creating separate development paths for idea-type and more mature solutions, and the commitment of project participants.

Background: Improved life expectancy combined with suboptimal physical activity (PA)represents an increasingly salient public health challenge among the elderly. PA in late life is associated with fewer health problems in old age. Assistive information and communication technology might improve PA and alleviate health problems among the elderly.Objective: This pilot study aimed to quantitatively measure the motivational aspects relatedto rollator use and, by using qualitative interviews, outline how a Smart Rollator solution would motivate older adults to increase their PA in their everyday lives.Method: A total of 19 subjects between the ages of 63 and 91 years participated in the study. Half of the participants started in a setting in which the application did not provide feedback to the user, and the other half received feedback. A transition occurred (ordinary rollator to Smart Rollator and vice versa) after two months of usage. Motivational aspects were measured before the use of the rollator and after four months. Semi-structured qualitative interviewswere conducted with 10 participants to acquire information about their experiences.Results: On the motivation questionnaire, self-perceived mental vitality showed a significant decrease at follow-up, but the total score did not change. Three different types of Smart Rollator users were identified based on the interview data: enthusiastic, practical, and disappointed users. The user types differed from each other, especially regarding user experiences concerning the smart features and intelligent features of the rollator.Conclusion: We conclude that the individual variations in terms of benefiting from the useof the Smart Rollator were large and that some users reported clear advantages using the Smart Rollator. The Smart Rollator elicited emotional reactions and affection, as well as frustration if the user was not able to benefit from the Smart Rollator as expected. Larger sample size is warranted to thoroughly specify the relations between the use of a Smart Rollator, user experiences, and PA.

DECIPHER (European Commission FP7 co-funded project) procures the research and development of novel solutions for secure cross-border access to personal health records and efficient and safe medical care for mobile patients with chronic diseases or unplanned care episodes. Interoperability and privacy challenges of cross-border care are tackled. Understanding of the Pre- Commercial Procurement (PCP) instrument and new knowledge for improving future European PCPs is obtained. Key aspects, such as the business case formulation, promote new concepts for procuring authorities and their operations. Following needs assessment, market consultations, a call for bids and evaluation, lessons learned as seen by the participating experts, are: The need of the procurers and the adequacy of the solution to the existing service system should be assessed in advance.

The multimedia content created by users with their mobile phones is often shared with family and friends to recreate personal experiences. It is difficult for a single media sharing service to cover all variations on how people would like topresent their experiences of different events; thus it is important to be able to easily create versions of these services. This paper presents in detail our platform implementation for enabling the creation of lightweight content- and context-aware mobile multimedia services. The platform supports state-of-the-art content management functionalities in order to enable easy creation of specialized multimedia services for various target groups and purposes. Our solution includes context metadata support for mobile multimedia content and creation of locationaware multimedia services. We have built example services on top of the platform using web-based technologies such as JavaScript, Media RSS feed and Java. The functionality of the platform has been tested in user evaluations with promising results.

The latest camera-equipped mobile phones and faster cellular networks have increased the interest in mobile multimedia services. But for content consumption, delivery and creation, the limited capabilities of mobile terminals require special attention. This paper introduces the Candela platform, an infrastructure that allows the creation, storage and retrieval of home videos with special consideration of mobile terminals. Candela features a J2ME-based video recording and annotation tool which permits the creation and annotation of home videos on mobile phones. It offers an MPEG-7-based home video database which can be queried in an intelligent and user-oriented manner exploiting users" personal domain ontologies. The platform employs terminal profiling techniques to deliver video retrieval user interfaces that personalize the search results according to the user's preferences and terminal capabilities, facilitating effective retrieval of home videos via various both mobile and fixed terminals. For video playout, Candela features a meta player, a video player augmented by an interactive metadata display which can be used for fast content-based in-video browsing, helping to avoid the consumption and streaming of uninteresting video parts, thus reducing network load. 12. Ablation velocity and thermal damage of myocardial tissue using a CO<formula><roman>2</roman></formula> laser for transmyocardial laser revascularization

Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization (TMLR) is a new experimental method for relief of angina pectoris in patients with severe coronary artery disease. TMLR aims at revascularizing chronic hibernating myocardium by creating transmural channels. One of the working mechanism hypotheses is that the endocardial side of the channels remains open, enabling perfusion of the hibernating myocardium directly from the left ventricle. Although the working mechanism of TMLR is still unknown (perfusion through patent channels, induction of angiogenesis, relief of angina through destruction of sympatic innervation, others?), first clinical studies are successful. Currently, the Heart LaserTM and other CO2 lasers, XeCl Excimer laser and Ho:YAG laser are under investigation for TMLR. The initial attempts of TMR with needles were soon replaced by laser induced channels. Efforts were focused on developing a CO2 laser that could penetrate a beating heart during its relaxation phase. Later, the position of the beam could be fixed in the myocardial wall using lasers with fiber delivery systems and perforation was achieved within multiple cycles. Various researchers reported on both patent and non-patent channels after TMLR. Our belief is that the extent of laser induced thermal damage is one of the factors that determine the clinical outcome and the extent of angiogenesis (and, possibly, the patency of the channel). The purpose of this study is to present a simple theoretical model to predict the extent of thermal damage around a transmyocardial channel. In vitro experiments were performed on myocardial bovine tissue and damage was assessed. The results were used to determine the final parameters of the approximating theoretical equation. To evaluate our results, we compared our results to in vitro data using the Heart LaserTM from the literature. Ablation velocities were also measured and the results were compared to ablation velocity calculations using a model described by Ostegar et al.© (1999) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. The perfusion of hibernating myocardium by oxygenated blood coming from transmyocardial channels to the left ventricular cavity has been considered as an alternative for patients unsuitable for bypass surgery. Channels created by lasers are believed to assure patency in the long term. At this moment, several laser systems have become available to create these channels with minimal thermal effects. The systems should be ECG triggered and the exposure should preferably be within the relaxation phase of the cardiac cycle (0.1 - 0.2 s). The lasers examined were an ultrapulsed carbon-dioxide laser with long focus delivery optics, a Holmium laser coupled to a 1 mm spot fiber and an Excimer laser coupled to a 950 fiber. Pieces of bovine myocardium (10 - 20 mm thickness) were exposed while the displacement during penetration was monitored. Pulse trains were delivered within 0.05 - 0.2 s with a repetition rate of 1 - 3 Hz. The fiber delivery devices were loaded with weights between 10 - 80 gram to study the influence of exerted force. For the carbon dioxide laser the creation of the channels was also recorded on high speed video and with a thermal imaging method in a model tissue to visualize explosive and thermal effects. With the Holmium laser immediate penetration of the fiber was obtained while with the Excimer laser the penetration of the fiber started only after several pulses within the train depending on force and energy. The carbon-dioxide laser beam created a channel instantly, up to 30 mm/pulse depending on spotsize and energy. We conclude that all three lasers are capable of creating a channel of 20 mm long on the heart within a few cardiac cycles. Histologic analysis showed that in contrast to the smooth channels of the carbon-dioxide laser, the Holmium and Excimer laser create irregular channels with ruptures to the sides with some thermal damage. It is not clear which kind of channels will have the best potentials to provide maximum perfusion of the myocardium.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Seventy four Reference Sites of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) have been recognised by the European Commission in 2016 for their commitment to excellence in investing and scaling up innovative solutions for active and healthy ageing. The Reference Site Collaborative Network (RSCN) brings together the EIP on AHA Reference Sites awarded by the European Commission, and Candidate Reference Sites into a single forum. The overarching goals are to promote cooperation, share and transfer good practice and solutions in the development and scaling up of health and care strategies, policies and service delivery models, while at the same time supporting the action groups in their work. The RSCN aspires to be recognized by the EU Commission as the principal forum and authority representing all EIP on AHA Reference Sites. The RSCN will contribute to achieve the goals of the EIP on AHA by improving health and care outcomes for citizens across Europe, and the development of sustainable economic growth and the creation of jobs.

In this study a 2D event-to-sequence floor matrix visualization method and a tool was developed for visualizing multidimensional sequential patterns. In practice, about 200 sequences can be efficiently displayed at once, and sequences can be as long as 20 nodes. Nodes (e.g., instances in time) may consist of up to 30 events (i.e., transactions). Each event may contain up to 20 attributes, which encode more detailed information about each individual event with colors. The amount of sequences and events is limited by the display resolution, while the number of nodes and attributes is limited by the ability of the human eye in utilising colors in an abstract image. The user can drill down from the initial overview to more detailed views and explore data interactively by using sorting, brushing, zooming and selection functions. Two applications, e-commerce transaction and telecommunication traffic, were used to experiment with the tool. The preliminary results indicate that the tool is useful in revealing hidden relationships in multidimensional sequential data.
