The strength of the connection between orthodontic brackets and sandblasted dental ceramics was evaluated. The strength of the bracket-ceramics connection was determined in four time intervals. Based on the obtained results, basic statistics were calculated. For the comparative analysis of average values, the following were used: ANOVA analysis of variance and Tukey’s HSD post-hoc test at the significance level of α = 0.05. The statistical analysis performed did not show any influence of the method of surface treatment (with sanding, without sanding) between orthodontic brackets and ceramics. At the same time, it has been shown that with samples storing time in aqueous environment, the quality of the connection decreases significantly, regardless of the surface treatment method used.

We present a case of iatrogenic complication after extraction of the teeth 35 in 63-years old women. There was a root of the teeth left in the bone. It was a causative agent of pain sensations and inflammation of the surrounding tissues. Due to the close distance between the root, mandible canal and mental foramen of mandible the removal of relict root was burden with high risk of parasthesis.

The article presents the case of a 12-year-old male patient who was suffering from exacerbated (infected) dentigerous cyst of maxillary sinus, associated with impacted canine whose symptoms were deceptively similar to intraoral abscess. The first-aid treatment performed by general dental practitioner consisted of intraoral incision and resulted in oroantral fistula formation. Eventually, the patient’s ailments were not resolved, and we had to deal with serious local complications and difficulties. The treatment was performed under general anesthesia in one-day surgery system and included enucleation of the lesion, excision, and closure of oroantral fistula. Dislocated canine was not removed, and its subsequent eruption was observed.

To date, only a limited number of publications have studied the specific oral and maxillofacial findings in patients diagnosed with Noonan syndrome (NS), which is an example of a genetically heterogeneous RASopathy. In this retrospective study, we aimed to ascertain the genotype–phenotype correlations between genetic mutations and certain diagnoses in the field of oral surgery. We collected surgical and genetic data from 42 children (median age, 12 years) who had a confirmed diagnosis of NS and underwent surgery in the Department of Oral Surgery, Medical University of Lodz, over a 17-year period, from 2004 to 2021. In total, 17 patients with mutations of the PTPN11 gene were diagnosed with over-retained deciduous teeth and supernumerary teeth. An amount of 7 patients with mutations of the SOS1 gene were diagnosed with mandibular compound odontomas. Finally, 12 patients with mutations of the LZTR1 gene were diagnosed with bilateral or unilateral central giant cell granulomas in the mandible. Although craniofacial features of many genetic disorders have been previously described in the literature, this study determined the genotype–phenotype correlations in the field of oral surgery.

Abstract Dental treatment of patients suffering from mental illnesses should not be neglected as good condition of oral cavity is one of the factors that determine satisfactory quality of life, not only by aesthetic but also by functional considerations.

Usage of platelet concentrate is an interesting clinical option for enhancement of healing tissue. One of them – Concentrated Growth Factors (CGF) is produced by processing blood samples with a special centrifuge device. It is proven that this material contains high concentration of growth factors and CD34+ cells which have anti-inflammatory properties and ability to stimulate proliferation and differentiation of connective tissue cells and angiogenesis. The following article presents a case of 70-year-old-patient who underwent the augmentation of the post-operative bone defect with CGF after removal of necrotic alveolar part of the mandible.

Objectives Local anesthetics are some of the most common drugs used in dentistry and about 6 million people daily around the world are subjected to their effect in procedures performed by a similar number of dentists who, in turn, are usually not aware of the fact of being allergic to this group of medications. Assuming that dentists are also patients, and that in their daily practice the contact with the allergen is very frequent, it is essential to assess the incidence of allergy to lidocaine in general dental practitioners. Material and Methods The authors evaluated a group of 100 general dental practitioners in whom adverse reactions similar to anaphylaxis occurred after local anesthesia. The study included individuals who, in their thorough medical history, had experienced episodes of such reactions regarding the skin, airways, gastrointestinal tract and other areas. Results The relations between type I hypersensitivity and certain symptoms, time from exposure to their appearance, as well as time from the last episode were investigated. Allergy to lidocaine was detected in 17 subjects – type I hypersensitivity was diagnosed in 13 cases (skin prick test – 7; intradermic test – 6) and 4 subjects had IgE-independent allergy (patch test). In the group where type I hypersensitivity was detected, urticaria, angioedema and rhinitis were indicated as inclusion criteria more often than among other subjects. According to the results, the occurrence of angioedema increased the risk of detection of type I hypersensitivity 68.8 times, and 1 year longer period from the last episode decreased this risk by circa 55%. Conclusions The most important, from the clinical practice point of view, was to show the relation between the medical history indicating the anaphylactic nature of the lidocaine intolerance, and an allergy confirmed by skin tests. Gunshots are one of the many causes of urgent admission of patients due to necessity of removing foreign bodies and bleeding control. A 63 y.o. patient was referred to the Department of Oral Surgery due to an accidental gunshot, which occurred in early adolescence and caused numerous post-gunshot injuries. The decision to waive surgical removal of foreign body was dictated by major risk of complications, such as: major bleeding from tongue vessels and probability of function loss. Also the lack of symptoms sustained such decision. Patient was informed about the necessity of performing the surgery in case of any pain, inflammation or necessity of proper interpretation of radiological examination (CT, MRI).

The article presents a case of a patient in which an asymptomatic intraosseous tumor of the mental nerve area was removed. The result of histopathologic examination confirmed the initial diagnosis of post-traumatic neuroma.

Concentrated Growth Factors (CGF) are obtained after blood collecting and its centrifuging. As an autogenic material it gains an advantage over xenogeneic materials used in regenerative procedures. Due to high concentration of growth factors and CD34+ cells in such a small volume, CGF promotes tissue regeneration. The following the article presents a case of 32-year-old-patient who underwent the augmentation of the post-extraction bone defect with CGF after the extraction of totally impacted lower third molar. Reduction of post-operative complications was observed.

Background and Objectives. Antibiotic regimen optimization is a major concern in post extraction sequelae management following third molar surgery, mostly owing to the absence of universal guidelines. Hence, this study aimed to determine the effect of antibiotic prophylaxis using three different doses of clindamycin on the prevention of infection and other complications following mandibular third molar disimpaction. The secondary outcome was testing whether clindamycin exhibits activity in acute or chronic models of pain using the visual analog scale of pain and the necessity for post-operative rescue analgesia. The tertiary outcome was to assess clindamycin penetration into the saliva by measuring its concentration using liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Materials and Methods. A randomized, two-center, triple-blind, controlled clinical trial was conducted, in which the patients were randomly allocated to three groups: I, receiving 150 mg clindamycin every 8 h; II, receiving 300 mg clindamycin every 8 h; and III, receiving 600 mg clindamycin every 12 h. Each group continued the therapy for five days. Results. An overall decrease in the risk of infection and other post-operative complications, such as trismus, edema, dysphagia, and lymphadenopathy, was achieved, with the best results in group I. Conclusion. As no statistical association was observed between clindamycin concentration in saliva and degree of post-operative inflammation, clindamycin concentration, or pain intensity, smaller doses of clindamycin administered over shorter time periods is recommended.

The article describes a rare case of radicular cyst associated with deciduous right upper molars in a 5 y.o. male patient. The cyst developed asymptomatically in the maxillary sinus, thus causing considerable displacement of both premolar germs. Due to the severity of surgery, the patient was treated under general anesthesia in a one-day surgery system with use of the enucleation method. The extent of the lesion results in necessity of removal of the second premolar germ. Early diagnosis of the lesion would have resulted in a more conservative treatment plan. The purpose of this article is to lay emphasis on the pedodontist’s role in early diagnosis of such lesions.

The article describes an unusual case of retrieval of 8 mm fragment of a broken 30-gauge 21 mm dental needle in a 6 y.o. noncooperative autistic male patient. The needle of a computer-controlled local anesthesia device was broken during an attempt to administer local anesthetic, in order to perform conservative treatment of teeth 55 and 54 by a pedodontist. Despite the fact that the patient was under nitrous oxide sedation, an unexpected movement of the patient occurred and resulted in needle breakage. Due to the lack of patient cooperation, the surgical retrieval of a broken needle was performed under general anesthesia as part of one-day surgery procedures. The purpose of the article is to emphasize careful decision-making in proper choice of dental instruments during treatment of noncooperative paediatric patients even under sedation and to suggest dentists to carry out treatment of such patients under general anesthesia.

The objective was to compare pain relief in alveolar osteitis achieved by the application of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and aspirin cones, and to assess the influence of both treatments on bacterial concentrations in post-extraction wounds. A split-mouth, single-center, non-randomized controlled trial was conducted in 30 patients. Pain relief was assessed using the visual analog scale at three time points (before, 24 h after, and 48 h after intervention). Bacterial concentrations were evaluated from cultures of swab samples collected at the three time points. A Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test was performed to detect differences in distributions of scalar variables between treatment with PRF and aspirin cones. Pain relief at 24 h and 48 h after treatment was significantly higher (p = 0.003) with PRF application than with aspirin cone placement. Additionally, PRF application caused a significantly higher reduction in aerobic bacteria concentration, an average increase, instead of a decrease, in lactic acid bacilli concentration in the first 24 h, and a significantly greater increase in streptococci concentration at 48 h follow-up. PRF provides better pain relief than aspirin cones in alveolar osteitis. Bacterial concentrations in the extraction wounds are consistent with the pain relief achieved after PRF or aspirin application.

Concentrated growth factors are one of platelet-rich plasma preparations (PPP), specially prepared in medical centrifuges. Due to high concentration of blood platelets, which reveal different sorts of growth factors, CGF stimulates wound healing, reduces post-operative complications, such as pain and swelling. The article presents a case of a 21-year-old-patient who underwent the augmentation of alveolar part of mandible with CGF after extractions of teeth 36, 37 and 38. The post-operative period, with follow-ups after one week and one-month post surgery, showed positive influence of applied plasma preparation

Vascular malformations associated with genetic syndromes lead to dysfunction of human body organs by blood supply impairment. Disorders in the structure of blood vessels walls result in developing pathological lesions called hemangiomas. The case describes a 16-year-old male patient with Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) who was treated surgically due to hemangioma of upper jaw. The patient suffered from typical for Sturge-Weber syndrome congenital disorders of other organs. In these cases surgical treatment requires deep analysis and proper procedure planning in the context of hemostasis.

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases including heart attack and stroke are the main cause of death in Poland. Out of the numerous bacteria that inhabit oral cavity, some are responsible for periodontitis. There is a confirmed correlation between chronic inflammation and cardiovascular disease. Aim of the study: The aim of study is evaluation of patients’ knowledge and awareness of the correlation between the oral health and the occurrence and development of cardiovascular diseases, especially atherosclerosis. Materials and Methods: The study included 150 patients from three locations in Lodz: Electrocardiology Clinic of Medical University of Lodz, a multi-profile clinic in Lodz and Oral Surgery Department of Medical University of Lodz. Each patient filled a questionnaire which contained demographic data (age, sex, place of residence, education), questions related to the oral cavity (a subjective estimate of the patient’s own oral hygiene, frequency of teeth brushing, last visit to the GDP), and five questions about the influence of the oral hygiene on the cardiovascular system with three options: Yes, No, and I don’t know. Results: Most patients realize that decayed teeth can cause inflammation in the body and influence the development of cardiovascular diseases. On the other hand, only less then half of the patients have knowledge about correlation between oral health and development of atherosclerosis. Conclusion: Increasing patients’ knowledge about the oral health and hygiene, the condition of the dentition and gums, and the overall health, including heart diseases, is a very important aspect of dentists’, general practitioners’ and cardiologists’ work. Patients are aware of the influence of the oral hygiene on their health but their knowledge needs to be deepened and systematized.

In the article described 9-year-old patient case who had been treated surgically due to compound odontoma of the left maxilla in the anterior segment. In the patient observed typical for odontogenic tumors in children persisted deciduous teeth. It results from the lack of the eruptive force of permanent teeth, blocked by the mass of the tumor. Any pathological lesions of the oral cavity in children require deep analysis and proper surgical proceeding.
