Social media use is pervasive among youth and is associated with body image disturbance and self-objectification. The present study investigated whether a 3-day social media fast in a sample for whom social media is especially salient, female adolescent dancers, can mitigate such negative effects. Through an online survey, 65 pre-teen and teen girls, aged 10-19, completed measures of self-objectification (body surveillance and body shame), self-esteem and self-compassion both prior to and following three days of abstaining from all social media. During the fast, girls reflected on their experiences in group messages on the messaging app, WhatsApp. Overall, the fast had positive effects on participants, for whom body surveillance and body shame was significantly reduced after the fast. Self-compassion significantly mediated the change in both body surveillance and body shame, and self-esteem was a significant mediator of improvements in body shame. The content of girls' group messages revealed a number of themes, such as more positive mental states during the fast. Future research should continue to examine the potential of brief social media fasts as a means to alleviate appearance pressures adolescent girls face on these platforms in daily life.

To understand the diversity of ways in which natural materials interact with light, it is important to consider how their reflectance changes with the angle of illumination or viewing and to consider wavelengths beyond the visible. Efforts to characterize these optical properties, however, have been hampered by heterogeneity in measurement techniques, parameters and terminology. Here, we propose a standardized set of measurements, parameters and terminology to describe the optical properties of natural objects based on spectrometry, including angle-dependent effects, such as iridescence and specularity. We select a set of existing measurements and parameters that are generalizable to any wavelength range and spectral shape, and we highlight which subsets of measures are relevant to different biological questions. As a case study, we have applied these measures to 30 species of Christmas beetles, in which we observed previously unrealized diversity in visible and near-infrared reflectance. As expected, reflection of short wavelengths was associated with high spectral purity and angle dependence. In contrast to simple, artificial structures, iridescence and specularity were not strongly correlated, highlighting the complexity and modularity of natural materials. Species did not cluster according to spectral parameters or genus, suggesting high lability of optical properties. The proposed standardization of measures and parameters will improve our understanding of biological adaptations for manipulating light by facilitating the systematic comparison of complex optical properties, such as glossy or metallic appearances and visible or near-infrared iridescence.

Meta-optical devices have recently emerged as ultra-compact candidates for real-time computation in the spatial domain. The use of meta-optics for applications in image processing and wavefront sensing could enable an order of magnitude increase in processing speed and data throughput, while simultaneously drastically reducing the footprint of currently available solutions to enable miniaturisation. Most research to date has focused on static devices that can perform a single operation. Dynamically tunable devices, however, offer increased versatility. Here we propose graphene covered subwavelength silicon carbide gratings as electrically tunable optical computation and image processing devices at mid-infrared wavelengths.

Introduction Despite the high burden of deaths from emergency conditions in Nigeria, there are no formal emergency medicine (EM) residency programs in the country. Due to the absence of training programs in the country, we hypothesised that there may be a lack of awareness of these benefits of specialised emergency care among medical students and also a lack of interest in it. In this study, we assessed the knowledge and attitude of Nigerian medical students towards EM specialty and their willingness to undergo EM training. Methods Online surveys were shared among medical students in six selected medical schools, one in each of the six geo-political zones in Nigeria. The surveys were designed to assess the knowledge of, attitude towards, and interest in EM residency programs. A total of 439 responses were received and analysed using Epi Info 7 analytical software. Results Among the 439 respondents, the average knowledge score was 27.5%. Thirty-three percent (CI 28%-37%) of all the respondents had good knowledge about the availability of and opportunities in EM. Good knowledge was determined by a score of >50% on the knowledge portion of the survey, 97%% (CI 96%-99%) of the respondents felt that EM training program should be established in Nigeria and 20.5% % (CI 17%-25%) of the respondents were interested in pursuing EM as a specialty of choice. Conclusion Our research showed that there is a low level of knowledge about EM residency training programs among Nigerian medical students. This is likely secondary to the current absence of these programs in Nigeria. Almost all of the respondents felt that an EM training program should be established and a substantial number of medical students indicated an interest in pursuing the specialty.

Self-objectification, the internalization of an observer's appearance-based perspective of one's body, has been theorized and demonstrated to reduce body awareness among women. In this field study, we propose self-objectification as the mechanism to explain the oft-observed phenomenon where women wearing little clothing appear unbothered by cold weather, positing that self-objectification obstructs women's feelings of cold. We surveyed women outside nightclubs on cold nights, assessed self-objectification, and asked participants to report how cold they felt. Anonymous photos were taken and coded for amount of skin exposure. We hypothesized that self-objectification would moderate the relationship between clothing coverage and reports of feeling cold. Our hypothesis was supported: women low in self-objectification showed a positive, intuitive, relationship between skin exposure and perceptions of coldness, but women more highly focused on their appearance did not feel colder when wearing less clothing. These findings offer support for the relationship between self-objectification and awareness of bodily sensations in the context of a naturalistic setting. We discuss implications of these findings, and also consider limitations, an alternative explanation, and directions for future research.

We experimentally demonstrate and theoretically study the formation of coherent plasmon-exciton states which exhibit absorption of >90% of the incident light (at resonance) and cancellation of absorption. These coherent states result from the interaction between a material supporting an electronic excitation and a plasmonic structure capable of (near) perfect absorption of light. We illustrate the potential implications of these coherent states by measuring the charge separation attainable after photoexcitation. Our study opens the prospect for realizing devices that exploit coherent effects in applications.

Structures capable of perfect light absorption promise technological advancements in varied applications, including sensing, optoelectronics, and photocatalysis. While it is possible to realize such structures by placing a monolayer of metal nanostructures above a reflecting surface, there remains limited studies on what effect particle size plays on their capacity to absorb light. Here, we fabricate near-perfect absorbers using colloidal Au nanoparticles, via their electrostatic self-assembly on a TiO2 film supported by a gold mirror. This method enables the control of interparticle spacing, thus minimizing reflection to achieve optimal absorption. Slightly altering the nanoparticle size in these structures reveals significant changes in the spectral separation of hybrid optical modes. We rationalize this observation by interpreting data with a coupled-mode theory that provides a thorough basis for creating functional absorbers using complex colloids and outlines the key considerations for achieving a broadened spectral response.

Background:The current situation regarding the scope and contribution of undergraduate medical research to the health space in Nigeria is still largely unreported in formal literature. This study examined the knowledge, attitudes, and the perceived barriers faced by medical students in Lagos toward research.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study design was conducted among all medical students in 200–600 levels of study at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. With the aid of Self-administered questionnaires, we examined their knowledge of research and the analytical tools used in research, their attitudes and the perceived barriers to their participation in research.Results: The data were obtained from 221 medical students, of whom 52.9% had prior involvement in research and 14.0% and 6.3% had presented or published their research, respectively. The overall knowledge of medical research was low (21.3%) and reported barriers included lack of funding for research' (79.6%), “lack of research and biostatistics curriculum” (76.0%), “inadequate training in research methodology” (74.7%), “insufficient time allocation to undergraduate research” (73.3%), “lack of professional supervisors and proper mentoring” (58.8%), and “lack of equipped laboratory facilities to conduct research” (77.8%). Conclusion:Our results highlight the need for more mentored supervision and training to improve their knowledge of the principles and techniques of clinical research to increase involvement.

This book aims to encourage more co-produced research by scholars working in evolutionary medicine (EM) and palaeopathology that addresses questions about human health, past and present. It highlights future research that may promote that collaboration between palaeopathology and EM. This chapter begins with the premise that EM and palaeopathology have clear synergies in that they take a deep time perspective as they explore health in the past and in the present. It introduces the volume and first provides a background to EM from its first appearance in the early 1990s, including discussions about ultimate and proximate explanations for disease. It then highlights that the field of palaeopathology was initially established much earlier than EM and argues that practitioners before the 1990s, often physicians, were simply not exposed to evolutionary theory in relation to the diseases they were seeing both in the living and in the dead. However, the stage now looks set for more productive collaborations. A thematic overview of the volume and its individual chapters follows within the framework of the suggested categories for study within EM (Williams and Nesse, 1990). The chapter finishes with some discussion about the One Health Initiative, EM and palaeopathology, an initiative that is considered an essential area of study now and for the future.

The visualization of transparent objects in real-time using ultracompact optical systems remains an ongoing challenge. Here we present metasurfaces that convert phase variations in a wavefield to intensity to create a pseudo-3D image of a phase object.

We demonstrate metasurfaces constructed of subwavelength periodic arrays of metal particles that possess asymmetric optical transfer function with a relatively high numerical aperture (~0.3) enabling phase imaging of diverse transparent objects.

Background Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) has uniquely stigmatizing aspects because children with ASD have no physical markers of their condition. Parents are usually blamed and judgment from others is often internalized (felt stigma). Aim This study was conducted to determine knowledge about ASD, negative experiences (enacted stigma), internalization of stigma (felt or self stigma) and its correlates among parents of children with ASD in Lagos, Nigeria. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 230 parents in Lagos, Nigeria employing mixed-method data collection methods. Quantitative data were collected using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and analyzed with Epi- Info™ version 7.0 statistical package. Data were summarized with proportions, mean and standard deviation. Chi square and Spearman’s correlation tests were done, and the level of significance was pre-determined at 5% (p Results The proportion of mothers and fathers were 175 (76.1%) and 55 (23.9%) respectively. The mean age of respondents was 42 ± 8.5 years. Overall knowledge of ASD was very poor as only 3(1.3%) had good knowledge. Overall, 122(53%) usually had negative experience of parenting a child with ASD (enacted stigma), mothers (17.1%) more than fathers (9.1%). Majority 192(83.5%) internalized stigma. There was a low–moderate correlation between ‘enacted’ stigma and ‘internalized’ stigma (ρ- 0.400, p Conclusion Overall, parents of children with ASD had poor knowledge of the condition. Majority internalized stigma and this increases with negative treatment from others. Parents should be properly educated about ASD. Community-based education to increase awareness about ASD in addition to encouraging people to show empathy and reduce stigmatizing behaviour towards parents of children with ASD are recommended.

Introduction: Increasing manpower capacity to meet the demands in the healthcare system is important during health emergencies. Medical students have roles to play during a pandemic but their involvement in these duties should be voluntary. The objective of this study was to assess the willingness and motivations of final year medical students in Lagos, Nigeria towards volunteering during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among medical students in their sixth (final) year of study at the two public Universities in Lagos, Nigeria using total population sampling technique. A web-based questionnaire was used for data collection and data were analysed using SPSS. Logistic regression analysis was used to predict the willingness to volunteer.Results: The mean age of the respondents was 23.4years±2.6SD and 62.6% were female. About 65.9% of the medical students were willing to volunteer. Motivational factors which include self-rated good health status [OR: 2.1(95%CI: 1.16-3.6)], self-rated competence to work as a COVID-19 volunteer [OR: 6.5(95%CI: 3.61-11.54)] and availability of adequate protection and personal protective equipment [OR: 3.3(95%CI: 1.74-6.33)] significantly increased the odds of willingness to volunteer after controlling for other variables. Respondents’ opinions on settings where medical students can serve as volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic include case management (21.7%) and telemedicine (85.8%).Conclusion: Medical students are willing to volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a need to prepare and motivate the final year medical students by developing their skills to improve their competence and by providing adequate protection for the willing students to function as volunteers.

This book is one of the first to study the regional role of women in public and professional life, breaking new ground in early twentieth-century local and gender history. Covering politics (Eleanor Acland and Clara Daymond), medicine and education (Dr Mabel Ramsay and Jessie Headridge), and a variety of voluntary organizations (Florence Cecil, Georgiana Buller, Jane Clinton and Sylvia Calmady-Hamlyn), it shows how women worked individually and in collaboration to create new opportunities for women and girls in a large, mainly rural, county far from London and the industrial heartlands of England. These biographical studies are based on original research and reveal the huge public contribution made by these eight women, who up to now have been largely hidden from history. Devon Women in Public and Professional Life, 1900–1950 is a contribution to the history of women in Britain between the wars, a period that has received less attention than the Edwardian era and the two World Wars. It also fills a major gap in the history of Devon women, on which almost nothing has been published, and on Devon in the inter-war period, similarly neglected by historians. It will be of interest to academics and students in the fields of gender history and the history of modern Britain, as well as everyone interested in the history of twentieth-century Devon.

This pilot study examined a novel technology-enhanced real-time action observation therapy (TERTAOT) of symmetrical bilateral movements in survivors of chronic stroke regardless of their ability to move their paretic limb(s). The TERTAOT used a Kinect XBox One to project mirror images of non-paretic limbs as participants performed symmetrical bilateral motor tasks involving whole-body movements in sitting or standing. The participants received eight weeks of treatment consisting of 30-minutes of conventional physical therapy (balance training, gait training, neuromuscular reeducation, and generalized strength training) and 30-minutes of the TERTAOT protocol per session (three sessions per week for a total of 24 sessions). Ten Meter Walk Test (10MWT), Five Times Sit-to-Stand (5TSTS), Timed Up and Go (TUG), Motor Activity Log - Quality of Movement (QOM) and Amount of Use (AOU) were administered at baseline (pretest), 4 weeks (posttest 1) and 8 weeks (posttest 2) post-TERTAOT, and 3 months after TERTAOT ended (retention). A General Linear Model Repeated Measures (parametric test) or the Friedman Test (non-parametric test) was used to compare outcomes across time points, depending on the normality of data distribution. Pigment-free colouration based on plasmonic resonances has recently attracted considerable attention for potential in manufacturing and other applications. For plasmonic colour utilizing the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) configuration, the generated colour is not only dependent on the geometry and transverse dimensions, but also to the size of the vertical gap between the metal nanoparticles and the continuous metal film. The complexity of conventional fabrication methods such as electron beam lithography (EBL), however, limits the capacity to control this critical parameter. Here we demonstrate the straightforward production of plasmonic colour via UV-assisted nanoimprint lithography (NIL) with a simple binary mould and demonstrate the ability to control this gap distance in a single print by harnessing the nanofluidic behaviour of the polymer resist through strategic mould design. We show that this provides a further avenue for controlling the colour reflected by the resulting plasmonic pixels as an adjunct to the conventional approach of tailoring the transverse dimensions of the nanostructures. Our experimental results exhibit wide colour coverage of the CIE 1931 XY colour space through careful control of both the length and periodicity and the resulting vertical gap size of the structure during the nanoimprinting process. Furthermore, to show full control over the vertical dimension, we show that a fixed gap size can be produced by introducing complementary microcavities in the vicinity of the nanostructures on the original mould. This demonstrates a simple method for obtaining an additional degree of freedom in NIL not only for structural colouration but also for other industrial applications such as high-density memory, biosensors and manufacturing.

Exposure to sexual objectification is an everyday experience for many women, yet little is known about its emotional consequences. Fredrickson and Roberts' (1997) objectification theory proposed a within-person process, wherein exposure to sexual objectification causes women to adopt a third-person perspective on their bodies, labeled self-objectification, which has harmful downstream consequences for their emotional well-being. However, previous studies have only tested this model at the between-person level, making them unreliable sources of inference about the proposed intraindividual psychological consequences of objectification. Here, we report the results of Bayesian multilevel structural equation models that simultaneously tested Fredrickson and Roberts' (1997) predictions both within and between persons, using data from 3 ecological momentary assessment (EMA) studies of women's (N = 268) experiences of sexual objectification in daily life. Our findings support the predicted within-person indirect effect of exposure to sexual objectification on increases in negative and self-conscious emotions via self-objectification. However, lagged analyses suggest that the within-person indirect emotional consequences of exposure to sexual objectification may be relatively fleeting. Our findings advance research on sexual objectification by providing the first comprehensive test of the within-person process proposed by Fredrickson and Roberts' (1997) objectification theory. Introduction:in Africa, genetic diseases and congenital anomalies remain a significant source of morbidity and mortality. Existing data suggests a gap in the use of prenatal tests among pregnant women to better inform decision making. We examined relationships of socio-demographic factors with willingness to terminate affected pregnancies, and the use of, knowledge of, and attitudes towards prenatal screening/diagnostic tests. Methods:this was a cross-sectional descriptive study of pregnant women who attended antenatal clinics at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (N = 422) selected by convenience sampling. Responses were obtained with assisted self-administered structured questionnaires. Results:mean ± S.D. age of the respondents was 32.5 ± 5.3 years. The majority of the participants (92.2%) had at least a secondary education. Ultrasound scans in the second trimester were the most frequently used test (39.1%). Only 77 (18.2%) of the respondents indicated willingness to terminate affected pregnancies. The majority of the respondents had fair knowledge and good attitude scores. Knowledge and attitude scores were significantly correlated (r = 0.25, p < 0.001). Compared to married women, being single was associated with a 2.62-point lower knowledge score (95% CI: -4.63, -0.62, p = 0.01). Compared to women who responded “no” when asked if they were willing to terminate an affected pregnancy, women who responded “maybe” had a 0.81-point lower attitude score (95% CI: -1.45, -0.17, p = 0.01). Conclusion:our results suggest important socio-demographic differences in women´s knowledge/behaviours towards prenatal diagnostic tests. Further research is needed to explore these relationships and broader pregnancy-related ethical beliefs among pregnant women in Lagos.

The ability to visualise transparent objects such as live cells is central to understanding biological processes. Here we experimentally demonstrate a novel nanostructured coverslip that converts phase information to high-contrast intensity images. This compact device enables real-time, all-optical generation of pseudo three-dimensional images of phase objects on transmission. We show that by placing unstained human cancer cells on the device, the internal structure within the cells can be clearly seen. Our research demonstrates the significant potential of nanophotonic devices for integration into compact imaging and medical diagnostic devices., The nanophotonics enhanced coverslip (NEC) enables ultra-compact phase imaging of samples placed directly on top of the device. Visualization of artificial phase objects and unstained biological cells is demonstrated.

Body shame is a common experience among women yet a challenging phenomenon to operationalize, and measures of body shame often fail to capture its embodied aspects. In this article, we examined the structural and psychometric properties of an existing measure of body shame that was developed by Fredrickson et al. (1998) to assess the motivational and behavioral components of feeling body shame. Across three studies, women participants completed the Phenomenological Body Shame Scale (PBSS) and measures of theoretically related constructs in counterbalanced order via online survey platforms. The results demonstrate evidence of construct validity for an abbreviated, 8-item measure of phenomenological body shame (PBSS-R). In Study 1 (n = 341 community women), we evaluated and confirmed the scale’s structural validity as a unidimensional measure. In Study 2 (n = 204 college women), we demonstrated positive associations between the PBSS-R and negative body image attitudes and behaviors, and negative associations with self-compassion, supporting the scale’s external validity. In Study 3 (n = 235 community women), the PBSS-R explained variance in intuitive eating and happiness above theoretically related measures of self-objectification and body shame, supporting the scale’s incremental validity. We recommend use of this abbreviated measure to assess the more embodied and less evaluative features of body shame in women.

We investigate the utilization of plasmonic resonant waveguide gratings for all-optical image processing in transmission. We experimentally demonstrate edge-detection in amplitude- as well as phase images and contrast enhancement of images of biological samples.

The conversion of phase variations in an optical wavefield into intensity information is of fundamental importance for optical imaging technology including microscopy of biological cells. While conventional approaches to phase-imaging commonly rely on bulky optical components or computational post processing, meta-optical devices have recently demonstrated all-optical, ultracompact image processing methods. Here we describe a metasurface that exploits photonic spin-orbit coupling to create an asymmetric optical transfer function for real time phase-imaging. The effect of the asymmetry on transmission through the device is demonstrated experimentally with the generation of high contrast pseudo-3D intensity images of phase variations in an optical wavefield without the need for post-processing. Background Global evidence reports tetanus as one of the highest contributors to preventable child deaths. Despite increasing advances in medicine, Nigeria still contributes a large burden to unnecessary child deaths having failed to eradicate tetanus. Methods A multipronged cross-sectional study aimed at identifying contributors to tetanus deaths in children in Lagos state. A 5-year retrospective hospital survey was carried in a tertiary centre to identify paediatric admissions due to tetanus, outcomes and factors contributing to the deaths. An epidemiological assessment tool was given to paediatricians to identify their practices in care of children with tetanus. A survey among 1000 caregivers in the Idi-Araba community assessed knowledge of- and preventives practices of tetanus in the community. Data was analysed using the SPSS version 22, demographic, clinical and social data were presented using descriptive statistics in the form of frequency tables, continuous data was presented as means ± standard deviation. Associations were determined using independent t-tests. Statistical significance was (p-values) set at ≤0.05. Results There were 102 tetanus admissions between September 2012 and 2017. Mean age at admission was 9.14 ± 3.65 years. Although 63.26% of the children had been previously vaccinated according to the National program of immunization, mortality rates for tetanus was 49.26%. Several (65.26%) health care professionals lacked adequate information about prevention of- or management of a child with tetanus. Among caregivers, 48.21% had never heard of tetanus, 50.21% of those who were aware had never vaccinated their wards and poor preventive practices was seen in 70.46% of caregivers. Only 12% of community children received booster doses after 5 years of age. Conclusion Despite the nationwide policy to immunise all children with 3 doses of tetanus before the age 1, in Idi-Araba community there is a problem of implementation. In children who were vaccinated according to the national schedule, Majority still did not get booster doses at school entry points which leaves them at risk. If we hope to reduce tetanus mortality, there is a need to educate health care professionals and caregivers and ensure proper establishment and implementation of appropriate immunisation practices.

Leprosy is an infection and neglected tropical disease that is steeped in myths, and, although it is described in history books, it can remain a challenge to manage today. Written in an accessible manner for professionals and the public alike, this book takes a global view of leprosy past and present. As a backdrop, it starts with exploring what we actually know about leprosy from medicine, how it is spread to humans, and its effects on the body. It then moves to consider its diagnosis and treatment in people, past and present. The focus switches next to the ways in which leprosy is diagnosed in skeletons (paleopathology), from just looking at the bones to analyzing the DNA of the bacteria preserved in the bones. By doing so, information on skeletons with evidence of leprosy across the globe is synthesized with the aim of considering the current state of global knowledge regarding the origin, evolution, and history of leprosy. In particular, the book explores how all the people diagnosed with leprosy in their skeletons in the past were buried, and the myth that everybody was ostracized and segregated into leprosy hospitals, due to stigma, is dismissed. It concludes with thoughts on a future for leprosy, the need to continue to dispel its myths and to seriously reconsider the use of the word “leper” when discussing leprosy today and in the past.

In Table 4, the mean, standard deviation, and range for the Personal Safety Anxiety and Vigilance (PSAVS) variable were incorrect.] Objectification Theory posits that everyday encounters with sexual objectification carry a diffuse nonspecific sense of threat that engenders personal safety anxiety in women. In this article, we provide direct evidence for this tenet across 5 studies and 1,665 participants using multiple methods. Study 1 (N = 207) and Study 2 (N = 161) explored and confirmed the factor structure of the Personal Safety Anxiety and Vigilance Scale (PSAVS), a measure of personal safety anxiety, and provided evidence for the reliability and construct validity of its scores. Study 3 (N = 363) showed that personal safety anxiety is a conceptually different construct for women and men, and differentially mediated the relation between sexual objectification and restricted freedom of movement and the relation between self-objectification and restricted freedom of movement for women and men. Study 4 (N = 460) included a comprehensive test of personal safety anxiety within an expanded Objectification Theory model, which supported personal safety anxiety as a mediator of the links from sexual and self-objectification to women's restricted freedom of movement. Study 5 (N = 474) replicated these results while also adjusting for specific fears of crime and rape. Our findings offer a newly validated assessment tool for future research on safety anxiety, illuminate the real and lasting sense of threat engendered by everyday sexual objectification, and broaden understanding of the mental and physical constraints on women's lived experiences posited in Objectification Theory.
