Lacustrine and marine sediments are one of the main sources of information in constructing Holocene global geomagnetic field models. The use of sediment records, however, leads to the question whether the compaction of sediments leads to a systematic biasing of inclination. We evaluate 78 sedimentary records worldwide for inclination flattening using the Elongation– Inclination (E/I) method; 20 records indicate flattening. The uncorrected and corrected values for inclination are compared to global geomagnetic field models. The results suggest that the uncorrected values agree better with the predictions from global geomagnetic field models based on sediment and archaeomagnetic data, but also with a model independent of sediment data. The 20 sites are located in mid-latitudes where inclination anomalies are predicted both in the Holocene and throughout the Brunhes epoch. Our results demonstrate that shallow incli- nation may not only result from compaction but may reflect the structure of the geomagnetic field on short timescales. In the early days of paleomagnetism, David Strangway was interested in understanding why igneous rocks are faithful recorders of the Earth’s magnetic field. He recognized that ferromagnetic (s.l.) grains that could be discerned by optical microscopy were too large to carry a stable remanent magnetization, and speculated whether fine-grained, ferromagnetic (s.l.) inclusions or exsolutions in silicate minerals are responsible. When these inclusions or exsolutions are randomly oriented, or the silicate hosts are randomly oriented in a rock, they can be a good recorder of the field. If these minerals, however, show an alignment within the silicate host, and the host is preferentially aligned due to flow structures or deformation, then the paleomagnetic direction and paleointensity could be biased. We examine the magnetic anisotropy arising from the ferromagnetic (s.l.) phases in silicate-host minerals. Single crystals of phyllosilicate, clinopyroxene, and calcite show most consistent ferrimagnetic fabric with relation to the minerals’ crystallographic axes, whereas olivine and feldspar display only a weak relationship. No discernable relationship is found between the ferrimagnetic anisotropy and crystallographic axes for amphibole minerals. Our results have implications when single crystals are being used for either studies of field direction or paleointensity or in cases where silicate minerals have a preferential orientation. Phyllosilicate minerals and pyroxene should be screened for significant magnetic anisotropy.

Control over particle size, size distribution, and colloidal stability are central aims in producing functional nanomaterials. Recently, biomimetic approaches have been successfully used to enhance control over properties in the synthesis of those materials. Magnetotactic bacteria produce protein-stabilized magnetite away from its thermodynamic equilibrium structure. Mimicking the bacteria’s proteins using poly-l-arginine we show that by simply increasing the pH, the dimensions of magnetite increase and a single- to mesocrystal transformation is induced. Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, we show that magnetite nanoparticles with narrow size distributions and average diameters of 10 ± 2 nm for pH 9, 20 ± 2 nm for pH 10, and up to 40 ± 4 nm for pH 11 can be synthesized. We thus selectively produce superparamagnetic and stable single-domain particles merely by controlling the pH. Magnetic hyperthermia has the potential to play an important role in cancer therapy and its efficacy relies on the nanomaterials selected. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are excellent candidates due to the ability of producing enough heat to kill tumor cells by thermal ablation. However, their heating properties depend strongly on crystalline structure and size, which may not be controlled and tuned during the synthetic process; therefore, a postprocessing is needed. We show how thermal annealing can be simultaneously coupled with ligand exchange to stabilize the SPIONs in polar solvents and to modify their crystal structure, which improves hyperthermia behavior. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and lock-in thermography, we systematically investigate the impact of size and ligand exchange procedure on crystallinity, their magnetism, and heating ability. We describe a valid and simple approach to optimize SPIONs for hyperthermia by carefully controlling the size, colloidal stability, and crystallinity.

Magnetic hyperthermia for cancer treatment has gained significant attention in recent years, due to its biocompatibility of applied nanoparticles and the possibility for spatially localized heating in deep tissues. Clinical treatments use nanoparticle concentrations of 112 mg Fe/mL, while the concentrations experimental studies have addressed are considerably smaller, usually between 0.1 and 30 mg/mL. Therefore, it is not clear whether such experiments correspond to the magnetic properties found in clinical applications. In this regard, we studied the thermal behavior of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) with the most common particle shapes used in the field, including spherical (core diameters 11 and 19 nm), cubic (15 nm) and ellipsoidal (23 nm with an aspect ratio of 1.45), at concentrations ranging from 5 to 80 mg Fe/mL. Their shape, size, crystallinity, magnetic, and thermal behavior were characterized via transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, Taylor dispersion analysis, X-ray diffraction, alternating gradient magnetometry, and lock-in thermography. Spherical and cubic nanoparticles displayed linear heating slopes, independent from size, shape and concentration, resulting in unchanged specific absorption rates (SAR). Ellipsoids showed the same behavior until 50 mg/mL, above which a decreasing heating slope trend was found, without evidence as to what causes this behavior. However, the presented results highlight the importance of colloidally stable SPIONs in magnetic hyperthermia to obtain maximum heating power by minimum particle dosage.

Purpose Several magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques exploit the difference in magnetic susceptibilities between tissues, but systematic measurements of tissue susceptibility are lacking. Furthermore, there is the question as to whether chemical fixation that is used for ex vivo MRI studies, affects the magnetic properties of the tissue. Here, we determined the magnetic susceptibility and water content of fresh and chemically fixed mouse tissue. Methods Mass susceptibility of brain, heart, liver and skeletal muscle samples were determined on a vibrating sample magnetometer at room temperature. Measurements at 50, 125, 200 and 295 K were performed to assess the temperature dependence of susceptibility. Moreover, we measured water content of fresh and fixed samples. Results All samples show mass susceptibilities between −0.068 and −1.929 × 10−8 m3/kg, compared to −9.338 × 10−9 m3/kg of double distilled water. Heart tissue has a more diamagnetic susceptibility than the other tissues. Compared to fresh tissue, fixed tissue has a less diamagnetic susceptibility. Fixed tissue was not different in water content to fresh tissue and showed no consistent dependence of susceptibility with temperature, whereas fresh tissue shows a decrease to at least 125 K, indicative of a paramagnetic component. Conclusions Biological tissues are diamagnetic in comparison to water, where the heart is more diamagnetic than the other tissues, with paramagnetic contributions. Fixation rendered tissue less diamagnetic compared to fresh tissue. Our measurements revealed differences in tissue susceptibility between VSM and QSM, inviting more research to compare susceptibility-based MRI methods with physical measurements of tissue susceptibility.

The efficacy of magnetic hyperthermia treatment depends on the optimal available magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) that are excited in a given alternating magnetic field and viscosity of the region of interest. In this regard, assessing the relevant relaxation parameters is of upmost importance and could improve the speed of development of efficient applications. Here, we demonstrate how to deduce all relevant magnetic parameters from fast, independent, and simple experimental measurements such as dynamic light scattering, vibrating sample magnetometer, and lock-in thermography. We study the thermal behaviour of two MNPs with different forms, i.e. spherical and cubical, synthesized in-house by thermal decomposition and coated with 4 different surface agents. By determination of specific absorption rate (SAR) values, hydrodynamic diameters and M−H curves it is possible to compute the magnetic particle volume, dominant relaxation time and magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant. The calculated SAR values derived from these parameters, show good agreement with the experimental determined SAR data, demonstrating the applicability of the reported procedure. Additionally, our results indicate that surface coatings can have minor impacts on the thermal dissipation of Néel relaxation dominated MNPs.

The MoEDAL trapping detector, consists of approximately 800 kg of aluminium volumes. It was exposed during Run-2 of the LHC program to 6.46 fb^-1 of 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHCb interaction point. Evidence for dyons (particles with electric and magnetic charge) captured in the trapping detector was sought by passing the aluminium volumes comprising the detector through a SQUID magnetometer. The presence of a trapped dyon would be signalled by a persistent current induced in the SQUID magnetometer. On the basis of a Drell-Yan production model, we exclude dyons with a magnetic charge ranging up to 5 Dirac charges, and an electric charge up to 200 times the fundamental electric charge for mass limits in the range 790 - 3130 GeV., arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1903.08491

SUMMARY Exsolved iron oxides in silicate minerals can be nearly ideal palaeomagnetic recorders, due to their single-domain-like behaviour and the protection from chemical alteration by their surrounding silicate host. Because their geometry is crystallographically controlled by the host silicate, these exsolutions possess a shape preferred orientation that is ultimately controlled by the mineral fabric of the silicates. This leads to potentially significant anisotropic acquisition of remanence, which necessitates correction to make accurate interpretations in palaeodirectional and palaeointensity studies. Here, we investigate the magnetic shape anisotropy carried by magnetite exsolutions in pyroxene single crystals, and in pyroxene-bearing rocks based on torque measurements and rotational hysteresis data. Image analysis is used to characterize the orientation distribution of oxides, from which the observed anisotropy can be modelled. Both the high-field torque signal and corresponding models contain components of higher order, which cannot be accurately described by second-order tensors usually used to describe magnetic fabrics. Conversely, low-field anisotropy data do not show this complexity and can be adequately described with second-order tensors. Hence, magnetic anisotropy of silicate-hosted exsolutions is field-dependent and this should be taken into account when interpreting isolated ferromagnetic fabrics, and in anisotropy corrections.

Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) has been shown to be a good proxy for crystallographic preferred orientation (texture). However, it is not clear in detail how different factors, e.g. modal composition and preferred orientation, define the total AMS in a rock. Black shale samples from a drill core on the Appalachian Plateau in western Pennsylvania were analyzed with respect to their microfabric as determined by texture and microstructure, and AMS. Low- and high-field AMS, which was measured at room temperature, reveals that the AMS of the samples is dominated by the para- and diamagnetic phases. Synchrotron diffraction was applied to determine the texture of all relevant mineral phases incorporated in the samples. Muscovite and chlorite pole figures show single maxima perpendicular to the foliation, reflecting dominant flattening strain. From these textures and the modal compositions, AMS models were calculated using the intrinsic magnetic anisotropy of the single crystals. The modeled and measured AMS are comparable in terms of their principal directions and shapes of the anisotropy ellipsoid for the dominantly paramagnetic samples, with the maximum susceptibility axes oriented subhorizontal to the NE-SW. Both, textures and AMS, indicate that the samples have undergone largely bedding compaction with a weak tectonic overprint linked to the Alleghenian orogeny. Our results suggest that the microfabric and the magnetic fabrics on the plateau, 200 km away from the Allegheny Front, detect the tectonic shortening. The AMS modeling demonstrates how the contribution of the intrinsic AMS of each mineral controls the AMS of the whole rock.

River floods holds the capasity to erode and transport sediments that are deposited whenever the discharge is redused. In catchments that are subjected to repeated flooding, downstream lakes can therefore contain a record of past events across multiple timescales. High-resolution core scanning analyses such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning and magnetic susceptibility (MS) provide data that are frequently used to detect flood layers in soft sediment archives such as lakes, fjords and ocean basins. Deposits of past floods also can potentially reveal information about the evolution of flood events as well as source area. Here we explore ways in which subtle variability in high-resolution data can be utilized and subsequently vetted by high-precision measurements in order to delineate the copious information that can be extracted from soft sediment records. By combining magnetic hysteresis measurements and first-order reversal curves (FORCs) with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) measurements of chemical elements on 36 samples, questions about flood dynamics and variability are raised, and also sources of noise in high-resolution scanning techniques are discussed. Specifically, we show that a lake flood record from Southern Norway containing 92 floods distributed over 10,000 years can be sub-divided into two groups of floods that were generated either by spring snow melting, intense summer rainstorms, or a combination of both. The temporal evolution of this pattern shows a marked shift towards spring floods around 2000 years ago compared to the earlier part of the record. This article is protected by copyright. Palaeogeographic reconstructions and construction of apparent polar wander paths are dependent on having reliable palaeomagnetic directions. The importance of inclination flattening in biasing the palaeomagnetic record has been debated for over 60 yrs. Correction for this effect often assumes that the palaeomagnetic vector deforms as a passive line. In a novel approach using 3D printed analogue rocks, we revisit the question of how a palaeomagnetic vector responds to deformation, specifically compaction. Maghaemite nanoparticles were mixed in the printing resin with a concentration of 0.15 wt. %, and five series of cylinders with 1 cm height and diameter were printed with porosities between 0% and 20%. Samples were given an anhysteretic remanent magnetization, and were subjected subsequently to incremental compaction. The magnetic fabric shows an initially weak compaction in the printing plane that becomes larger with increased compaction. The palaeomagnetic inclination changes according to the strain that the sample undergoes, and the amount of deflection is less than predicted by a passive line model of deformation. Our results demonstrate that using a single correction factor for inclination flattening is questionable, and show the need for a method that considers how the rock deforms. Further we demonstrate the usefulness of 3D printed analogue rock, which can inspire more realistic methods to correct for inclination flattening.

During the Triassic, Iberia and western North Africa displayed a unique situation in relation with the Central and North Atlantic opening and westward expansion of the Tethys. Unravelling the stretching direction in Triassic deposits of the studied area can help in our understanding of this scenario. The tectonic setting is characterized by localized basins with strong thickness variations greatly influenced by previous post-Variscan mechanical discontinuities. In this work, we revise and compile magnetic fabric data from eight Triassic depocentres in terms of defining the stretching direction (i.e. magnetic lineation), resulting from extensional deformation of this period. Data show the importance of the opening of the Atlantic rift as the leading process during the Triassic. Dextral transtension can explain the deflection of the extensional direction observed in most studied depocentres that is caused by the activity of previous major oblique faults.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) capable of mobility and manipulation are attractive materials for potential applications in targeted drug delivery, catalysis, and small‐scale machines. One way of rendering MOFs navigable is incorporating magnetically responsive nanostructures, which usually involve at least two preparation steps: the growth of the magnetic nanomaterial and its incorporation during the synthesis of the MOF crystals. Now, by using optimal combinations of salts and ligands, zeolitic imidazolate framework composite structures with ferrimagnetic behavior can be readily obtained via a one‐step synthetic procedure, that is, without the incorporation of extrinsic magnetic components. The ferrimagnetism of the composite originates from binary oxides of iron and transition metals such as cobalt. This approach exhibits similarities to the natural mineralization of iron oxide species, as is observed in ores and in biomineralization.

The northern Tanzanian sector of the Gregory Rift is an area of an active continental rifting, in which sedimentation processes are strongly affected by volcanism . Due to limited stratigraphic exposure, the volcanic record of the region is rather sparse, and assigning volcanic centres for the individual eruptions is difficult. This study presents new data on the tephrostratigraphy of the sedimentary sequence of Lake Emakat, Empakaai Crater , northern Tanzania. Seven volcanic ash layers are identified and described from a 1.1-m core of lake sediments . Geochemical, mineralogical, petrographic and magnetic analyses show that: (1) all ash layers are products of highly explosive eruptions of melilite-bearing magmas ; (2) most of the eruptions originate from a complex magmatic system; (3) all ash horizons are very well preserved in the lake environment ; and (4) there are significant fluctuations of the bulk magnetic susceptibility of the lacustrine sediments which is related to microtephra from additional eruptions, the result of detritus , washed from the shore during periods of strong lake level fluctuations or periods of high erosion rates, or simply by the contamination by the material from the ash layers. Based on geochemistry and mineralogy of the seven identified ash layers in Lake Emakat, combined with the eruption ages from 14C datings, we can pinpoint Oldoinyo Lengai volcano as the source of these specific layers. The combination of this new data with existing chronological data from Ryner et al. (2007), retrieved from the same core, provides precise ages of the voluminous highly explosive eruptions in this region of East Africa during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition.

Contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are essential for evidential visualization of soft tissues pathologies. Tibetan Plateau uplift has been suggested as the main driving force for mid-latitude Asian inland aridity (AIA) and for deposition of thick aeolian sequences in northern China since the Miocene. However, the relationship between earlier AIA and Tibetan Plateau mountain building is uncertain because of a lack of corresponding thick aeolian sequences with accurate age constraints. We here present results for a continuous aeolian sequence that spans the interval from >51 to 39 Ma from the eastern Xorkol Basin, Altun Shan, northeastern Tibetan Plateau. The basal age of the studied sequence postdates initial uplift of the Tibetan Plateau by several million years. Our results indicate that the local palaeoclimate was teleconnected strongly to the overall global cooling pattern, so that local enhanced aridification recorded by the studied aeolian sequence is dominantly a response to global climatic forcing rather than plateau uplift., The role Tibetan Plateau uplift played in Asian inland aridification remains unclear due to a paucity of accurately dated records. Here, the authors present a continuous aeolian sequence for the period >51–39 Ma, analysis of which indicates that aridification was driven by global climatic forcing rather than uplift.

Feldspars are the most abundant rock-forming minerals in the Earth’s crust, but their magnetic properties have not been rigorously studied. This work focuses on the intrinsic magnetic anisotropy of 31 feldspar samples with various chemical compositions. Because feldspar is often twinned or shows exsolution textures, measurements were performed on twinned and exsolved samples as well as single crystals. The anisotropy is controlled by the diamagnetic susceptibility and displays a consistent orientation of principal susceptibility axes; the most negative or minimum susceptibility is parallel to [010], and the maximum (least negative) is close to the crystallographic [001] axis. However, the magnetic anisotropy is weak when compared to other rock-forming minerals, 1.53 × 10−9 m3 kg−1 at maximum. Therefore, lower abundance minerals, such as augite, hornblende or biotite, often dominate the bulk paramagnetic anisotropy of a rock. Ferromagnetic anisotropy is not significant in most samples. In the few samples that do show ferromagnetic anisotropy, the principal susceptibility directions of the ferromagnetic subfabric do not display a systematic orientation with respect to the feldspar lattice. These results suggest that palaeointensity estimates of the geomagnetic field made on single crystals of feldspar will not be affected by a systematic orientation of the ferromagnetic inclusions within the feldspar lattice.

Dispersions of magnetic ellipsoidal colloids were investigated to study the effect of a magnetic field on their phase behaviour., We characterize the structural properties of magnetic ellipsoidal hematite colloids with an aspect ratio ρ ≈ 2.3 using a combination of small-angle X-ray scattering and computer simulations. The evolution of the phase diagram with packing fraction φ and the strength of an applied magnetic field B is described, and the coupling between orientational order of magnetic ellipsoids and the bulk magnetic behavior of their suspension addressed. We establish quantitative structural criteria for the different phase and arrest transitions and map distinct isotropic, polarized non-nematic, and nematic phases over an extended range in the φ–B coordinates. We show that upon a rotational arrest of the ellipsoids around φ = 0.59, the bulk magnetic behavior of their suspension switches from superparamagnetic to ordered weakly ferromagnetic. If densely packed and arrested, these magnetic particles thus provide persisting remanent magnetization of the suspension. By exploring structural and magnetic properties together, we extend the often used colloid-atom analogy to the case of magnetic spins.

Intelligent, on-demand drug administration systems with controlled release kinetics may revolutionize the way diseases are treated. Typically, the release of the therapeutic payload from these systems is activated by stimuli-responsive nanofillers. However, limitations regarding large-scale nanomaterial production and poor reproducibility keep such systems in the labs and away from clinics. Here, we demonstrate the highly scalable and reproducible synthesis of uniform superparamagnetic Fe2O3 nanoparticles coated with a nanothin layer of amorphous SiO2, and evaluate their suitability as stimuli-responsive nanofillers in a drug-loaded biopolymer alginate matrix. The superior colloidal stability of the SiO2-coated Fe2O3 nanoparticles over their uncoated counterparts and their dispersibility in aqueous suspensions facilitates their incorporation in alginate hydrogel microbeads. We examine the hyperthermia performance of such multiscale particle structures in the presence of alternating magnetic fields and compare the release of dextran (a model biomolecule) in the presence and absence of external stimuli. The enhanced triggered release of dextran in the presence of magnetic fields further highlights the potential of such superparamagnetic SiO2-coated Fe2O3 nanoparticles as a functional transducer in such systems.

We re-analyzed rock-magnetic data of lake sediments from the Alpine region, which were previously recognized as sensitive climate proxy records, in search of decadal climate variability. Different methods of spectral analysis applied to the rock-magnetic data from two independent lake records show the presence of a coherent and statistically significant periodicity with a period of about 50–60 years. The frequency-filtered signal of this component co-varies with the instrumental record of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) over the last 110 years with a negligible phase shift. After having tested and ruled out the possible influence of solar irradiance in the putative AMO frequency band, based on spectral properties, we suggest that a significant influence of AMO in the Alpine region extends back in time for at least two millennia. Comparison of the amplitude of the AMO record with that of the Younger Dryas/Holocene transition suggests that AMO fluctuations played a significant role in pacing the past variability of the Alpine climate.

Day-Dunlop plots are widely used in paleomagnetic and environmental studies as a tool to determine the magnetic domain state of magnetite, i.e., superparamagnetic (SP), stable single-domain (SD), pseudosingle-domain (PSD), multidomain (MD), and their mixtures. The few experimental studies that have examined hysteresis properties of SD-SP mixtures of magnetite found that the ratios of saturation remanent magnetization to saturation magnetization and the coercivity of remanence to coercivity are low, when compared to expected theoretical mixing trends based on Langevin theory. This study reexamines Day-Dunlop plots using experimentally controlled mixtures of SD and SP magnetite grains. End-members include magnetotactic bacteria (MSR-1) as the SD source, and a commercial ferrofluid or magnetotactic bacteria (ΔA12) as the SP source. Each SP-component was added incrementally to a SD sample. Experimental results from these mixing series show that the magnetization and coercivity ratios are lower than the theoretical prediction for bulk SP magnetic size. Although steric repulsion was present between the particles, we cannot rule out interaction in the ferrofluid for higher concentrations. The SP bacteria are noninteracting as the magnetite was enclosed by an organic bilipid membrane. Our results demonstrate that the magnetization and coercivity ratios of SD-SP mixtures can lie in the PSD range, and that an unambiguous interpretation of particle size can only be made with information about the magnetic properties of the end-members.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field intensity in the past can be determined from archeological artifacts. These archeointensity data are important inputs for geomagnetic field models and local reference curves of Earth’s magnetic field. Although archeointensities have been measured on materials for more than half a century ago, data are still scarce before 1000 BC and for the Alpine area in general. This investigation presents new absolute archeointensity data from a time period of 5000–700 BC from Italy and Switzerland. The archeological materials that were studied are ceramics, copper slag, and burned sediments from fireplaces. In addition, we investigated archeointensities from burned cherts, in order to uncover if they are a suitable material for paleomagnetism. Rock magnetic properties of all samples indicate magnetite, and small amounts of maghemite and hematite in the pseudosingle domain range as the ferromagnetic carriers. The IZZI protocol was used for 96 specimens to obtain absolute intensities; 23 ceramics, slags and burned cherts passed the threshold criteria, which we applied. The choice of the threshold values allowed us to obtain the linear part in the Arai diagram, which corresponds to the characteristic remanent magnetization. Burned sediments did not pass the threshold criteria, most probably because they acquired a thermochemical remanent magnetization during their formation. We demonstrate that magnetic susceptibility and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization can be used to select cherts that are suitable for paleointensity determinations. After applying anisotropy and cooling rate corrections, the new archeointensity values are lower for some samples, but fit well with available models and other archeomagnetic data.

Pyroxenes constitute an important component in mafic igneous and metamorphic rocks. They often possess a prismatic habit, and their long axis, the crystallographic c axis, helps define a lineation in a textured rock. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) serves as a fabric indicator in igneous and metamorphic rocks. If a rock’s AMS is carried by pyroxenes, it can be related to their crystallographic preferred orientation and degree of alignment. This requires knowing the intrinsic AMS of pyroxene single crystals. This study provides a comprehensive low-field and high-field AMS investigation of chemically diverse orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene crystals in relation to crystal structure, chemical composition, oxidation state of Fe, and the possible presence of ferromagnetic inclusions. The paramagnetic anisotropy, extracted from high-field data, shows clear relationships to crystallographic directions and Fe concentration both in clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene. In the diopside-augite series, the intermediate susceptibility is parallel to b, and the maximum is at 45° to the c axis. In aegirine, the intermediate axis remains parallel to b, while the maximum susceptibility is parallel to c. The AMS of spodumene depends on Fe concentration. In enstatite, the maximum susceptibility aligns with c and the minimum with b, and in the case of hypersthene, the maximum susceptibility is normal to the exsolution lamellae. Magnetite inclusions within augite possess a ferromagnetic anisotropy with consistent orientation of the principal susceptibilities, which dominates the low-field anisotropy. These results provide better understanding of magnetic anisotropy in pyroxenes and form a solid basis for interpretation of magnetic fabrics in pyroxene-bearing rocks.

If amphibole is a major constituent in a rock, its magnetic fabric can be largely controlled by the crystallographic preferred orientation of amphibole. This study describes the (para)magnetic anisotropy in two amphibolites, both containing ca. 70% hornblende with rather strong crystallographic preferred orientation. Both amphibolites display a significant and well-defined anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility, with the minimum susceptibility approximately normal to foliation. However, in one amphibolite, the maximum susceptibility is parallel to the lineation, whereas in the other it is not. This seemingly inconsistent observation can be explained by the intrinsic susceptibility anisotropy of single crystals of hornblende, and their texture in the rocks. Numerical models show how the principal susceptibility axes relate to macroscopic foliation and lineation for point and fiber textures. This study underlines the potential of using magnetic anisotropy to obtain information about mineral fabrics in mafic rocks. At the same time, it highlights the necessity for taking into account single crystal properties of the mineral(s) responsible for the anisotropy and their crystallographic preferred orientation when interpreting magnetic fabrics.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic particle imaging (MPI) are powerful methods in the early diagnosis of diseases. Both imaging techniques utilize magnetic nanoparticles that have high magnetic susceptibility, strong saturation magnetization, and no coercivity. FeraSpinTM R and its fractionated products have been studied for their imaging performances; however, a detailed magnetic characterization in their immobilized state is still lacking. This is particularly important for applications in MPI that require fixation of magnetic nanoparticles with the target cells or tissues. We examine the magnetic properties of immobilized FeraSpinTM R, its size fractions, and Resovist®, and use the findings to demonstrate which magnetic properties best predict performance. All samples show some degree of oxidation to hematite, and magnetic interaction between the particles, which impact negatively on image performance of the materials. MRI and MPI performance show a linear dependency on the slope of the magnetization curve, i.e., initial susceptibility, and average blocking temperature. The best performance of particles in immobilized state for MPI is found for particle sizes close to the boundary between superparamagnetic (SP) and magnetically ordered, in which only Néel relaxation is important. SUMMARY In this study, the contribution of the paramagnetic, ferrimagnetic and haematite components to the magnetic anisotropy is separated by means of high-field torque magnetometry. Torque measurements at different fields, which are high enough to saturate the ferrimagnetic minerals, however, still low enough that the torque resulting from the haematite is linear with field, allow for the separation of the three magnetic anisotropy components. The method has been applied to haematite single crystals in which no paramagnetic or ferrimagnetic components have been found contribute to the torque signal. The mean direction of the poles to the crystallographic basal plane in the haematite single crystals is subparallel to the minimum-susceptibility direction measured in low-field. The separation analysis has also been applied to highly deformed red beds from the Lower Glarus nappe complex (Switzerland). No ferrimagnetic phases are present in the rocks and, therefore, they cannot contribute to the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility. The magnetic fabric arises from a paramagnetic subfabric carried by the phyllosilicate minerals and haematite, in which the basal planes of both phases are in the cleavage plane. The measured magnetic lineation seen in low-field anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility appears to be an apparent lineation that arises from a weak girdling of haematite and the paramagnetic minerals conforming the rock.

Current methods for preparing magnetic composites with carbon nanotubes (MCNT) commonly include extensive use of treatment with strong acids and result in massive losses of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In this study we explore the potential of taking advantage of the inherent magnetic properties associated with the metal (alloy or oxide) incorporated in CNTs during their production. The as-received CNTs are refined by applying a permanent magnet to a suspension of CNTs to separate the high-magnetic fraction; the low-magnetic fraction is discarded with the solvent. The collected MCNTs were characterized by a suite of 10 diffraction and spectroscopic techniques. A key discovery is that metallic nano-clusters of Fe and/or Ni located in the interior cavities of the nanotubes give MCNTs their ferromagnetic character. After refinement using our method, the MCNTs show saturation magnetizations up to 10 times that of the as-received materials. In addition, we demonstrate the ability of these MCNTs to repeatedly remove atrazine from water in a cycle of dispersion into a water sample, adsorption of the atrazine onto the MCNTs, collection by magnetic attraction and regeneration by ethanol. The resulting MCNTs show high adsorption capacities (> 40 mg-atrazine/g), high magnetic response, and straightforward regeneration. The method presented here is simpler, faster, and substantially reduces chemical waste relative to current techniques and the resulting MCNTs are promising adsorbents for organic/chemical contaminants in environmental waters., PLoS ONE, 12 (7), ISSN:1932-6203

Magnetite nanoparticles exhibit magnetic properties that are size and organization dependent and, for applications that rely on their magnetic state, they usually have to be monodisperse. Forming such particles, however, has remained a challenge. Here, we synthesize 40 nm particles of magnetite in the presence of polyarginine and show that they are composed of 10 nm building blocks, yet diffract like single crystals. We use both bulk magnetic measurements and magnetic induction maps recorded from individual particles using off-axis electron holography to show that each 40 nm particle typically contains a single magnetic domain. The magnetic state is therefore determined primarily by the size of the superstructure and not by the sizes of the constituent sub-units. Our results fundamentally demonstrate the structure – property relationship in a magnetic mesoparticle.

Analysis of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and brittle mesostructures (hydroplastic synsedimentary faults and tension gashes) is applied in this study in order to characterize the Mesozoic tectonic events in the Cameros basin (NW Iberian Range), formed between Tithonian and Albian times. Low-field AMS at room and low temperature (LF-AMS at RT and LF-AMS at LT, respectively) together with high-field AMS (HF-AMS) measurements allow separating ferro- and paramagnetic fabrics. The combination of LF-AMS at LT and HF-AMS torque measurements confirms the reliability of both procedures in terms of isolating the paramagnetic contribution to the AMS. Magnetic fabric results combined with the analyses of synsedimentary faults indicate a NW–SE extension direction during Aptian (and probably Barremian) times. This extension direction is perpendicular to the main extension direction (NE–SW) prevailing during early and late stages of basin evolution. It is also consistent with extension direction deduced from large-scale bending folds and tension gashes, developed after partial lithification. Cleavage development during Albian enhanced the orientation of the magnetic fabric in lithologies where the previous extensional magnetic lineation is coaxial with the expected one for compression.

A detailed analysis of fabrics of the chilled margin of a thick dolerite dyke (Foum Zguid dyke, Southern Morocco) was performed in order to better understand the development of sub-fabrics during dyke emplacement and cooling. AMS data were complemented with measurements of paramagnetic and ferrimagnetic fabrics (measured with high field torque magnetometer), neutron texture and microstructural analyses. The ferrimagnetic and AMS fabrics are similar, indicating that the ferrimagnetic minerals dominate the AMS signal. The paramagnetic fabric is different from the previous ones. Based on the crystallization timing of the different mineralogical phases, the paramagnetic fabric appears related to the upward flow, while the ferrimagnetic fabric rather reflects the late-stage of dyke emplacement and cooling stresses.
