Abstract

The computing research community needs to work much harder to address the downsides of our innovations. Between the erosion of privacy, threats to democracy, and automation's effect on employment (among many other issues), we can no longer simply assume that our research will have a net positive impact on the world. While bending the arc of computing innovation towards societal benefit may at first seem intractable, we believe we can achieve substantial progress with a straightforward step: making a small change to the peer review process. As we explain below, we hypothesize that our recommended change will force computing researchers to more deeply consider the negative impacts of their work. Abstract

Context: Odontogenic cysts and tumours are a wide array of complex pathological entities ranging from mild indolent to aggressive detrimental in nature, which occur as a result of anomalous alterations in normal odontogenesis. Hence, these odontogenic lesions need to be evaluated extensively by using potential immunohistochemical markers. Aim: To evaluate and compare the expression of podoplanin, a lymphoendothelial IHC marker in odontogenic cysts and odontogenic tumours to determine their proliferative potential. Settings and Design: All the study samples were retrieved from the archives of the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, PIDS&RC, Hyderabad. The study samples were selected as per the standard histopathological diagnostic criteria and subjected for IHC analysis using podoplanin. Method and Materials: Seventy paraffin-embedded tissue specimens of OKC, OOC, dentigerous cyst (DC) and ameloblastoma (AM) include study sample, which were stained with podoplanin IHC marker and staining properties were evaluated. All the cases were categorized as high, moderate, weak or negatively reactive on the basis of the composite scoring. Statistical Analysis Used: Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 14, and then results were compared by ANOVA post hoc test and Kruskal Wallis Test. Results: In the comparison of composite scores of OKCs and AM, there was no significant statistical difference. Conclusion: The present study contributes to the significant association of podoplanin expression with cellular proliferation, cystic expansion and local invasiveness of odontogenic cysts and tumours through cytoskeletal reorganization and cell migration. Abstract

Forensic age estimation, after completion of third molar mineralization, regressive features such as apposition of secondary dentin, which is seen as narrowing of the pulp space in the radiographs, can be used as an alternative. In the present study, we explored the radiographic visibility of the root pulp of mandibular first molars using stage classification of Olze et al. (Int J Legal Med 124(3):183-186, 2010) in a sample of 901 orthopantomograms (404 males and 497 females) of south Indian origin with age ranging from 14 to 22 years. Descriptive statistics for the stages according to age was performed for both sexes separately. The strength and direction of the relationship between the chronological age and pulp visualization stages was tested using spearman's rho correlation statistics. The relationship between age and stage attainment showed statistical significance for both sexes. A strong, positive correlation was seen between the stage and chronological age. All males and females presenting stage 0 of root pulp visibility were younger than 18 years. If stage 1 is determined, it is highly possible that an individual regardless of sex is younger than 18 years. Stage 2 was attained in 79.6% males and 83.1% females who were at least 18 years. One hundred percent males and 92.8% females with stage 3 were at least 18 years. The accuracy of this method in mandibular first molars for estimating age threshold of 18 years ranged from moderate to high. However, it is recommended to use this method in conjunction with other age estimation methods.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy, specificity and sensitivity of four commonly used methods of dental age estimation in a sample of south Indian adolescents and young adults aged between 14 and 30 years, with an age threshold of 18 years, using receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) and the area under the cur ve (AUC). A total of 1070 orthopantomograms (535 males and 535 females) of adolescents and young adults of south Indian origin were collected retrospectively and interpreted. The effectiveness of each method was evaluated by using sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp), likelihood ratios (LR+ and LR-) and AUC. Among all methods, I3M< 0.08 resulted in better values of AUC, Se and Sp which were 0.950, 91.5%, 97.8% and 0.950, 88.5% and 98.6% in males and females, respectively. For "stage H" of Demirjian's system, the AUC, Se and Sp were 0.940, 84.9%, 97.7% and 0.930, 79.9% and 98.5% in males and females, respectively. The use of the Olze et al "stage 1 (or higher)" root pulp visibility and "stage D" of third molar eruption were not recommended in the studied population due to the greater percentage of third molars with incomplete mineralization in younger age groups and impaction. Taking into account the values of Se, Sp, both positive and negative LRs, we recommend the use of the cut-off value of I3M< 0.08 to discriminate adults and minors in south Indian adolescents and young adults.
