During survey, exploration and germplasm collection in parts of Eastern India and National Capital Region of Delhi, mainly Haryana state of India, the authors came to know that two species of Malva locally known as ‘‘lapha’’ being used as a green leafy vegetable in the surveyed areas. Published literature refers same local name and use of Malva parviflora. The critical morphological study of the taxa has delineated two taxa as Malva parviflora L and M. verticillata L, former is a weed of wastelands whereas the latter is grown as vegetable in some parts of Assam, Bihar and West Bengal. M. verticillata is preferred most by locals due to its easy-to-cultivate nature and having high nutritive/therapeutic value, which indicates it’s potential to cultivate during the lean period in those areas where few greens are grown. In the present paper, detailed study on botanical characters, range of distribution and method of utilization of both the taxa in the Indian region has been discussed. The current studies further demonstrated that allied species with similar use and taste are identified as a substitute.

In India, lack of revisionary work in the genus Trichosanthes L. (Cucurbitales: Cucurbitaceae) over the past 38 years had resulted in several taxonomic and nomenclatural issues, which had implications in determining actual distribution status of taxa. Based on field observations, collected specimens, data from various specimens in herbaria and critical study of all the resources available, here we confirm the extended distribution of T. anaimalaiensis Bedd. in the states of Manipur and Nagaland; T. cordata Roxb. in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar; T. cucumerina L. subsp. sublobata (Kundu) K. Pradheep, D.R. Pani & K.C. Bhatt in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha; T. dicaelosperma C.B. Clarke in Nagaland; T. kerrii Craib in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur; T. majuscula (C.B. Clarke) Kundu in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Assam; and T. truncata C.B. Clarke in Nagaland. Two taxa, namely, Trichosanthes dicaelosperma and T. majuscula, earlier subsumed with T. ovigera Blume or T. cucumeroides (Ser.) Maxim., and T. dunniana H. Lév., respectively, have been resurrected at the rank of species. Lectotypes were designated for the names of above two species. For the first time, female plants of T. majuscula have been described. This communication provides an updated distribution status of seven taxa of Trichosanthes in India along with field and taxonomic notes, and additional taxonomic characters.

An aquatic cash crop, ‘makhana’ (Euryale ferox Salisb.) was studied for predicted habitat suitability through ‘BioClim’ model for the year 1950–2000 and projected climate data for 2050 and 2070 for the Indian region based on primary data from survey and exploration for germplasm collection by ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR), New Delhi, India. A total of 362 diverse ‘makhana’ or foxnut germplasm accessions were augmented mainly from different districts of Indian state of Bihar and conserved at the National Genebank (NGB) at ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi. Predicted habitat suitability map of climate for the period 1950–2000 showed that the current locations of the highly suitable areas of cultivation of ‘makhana’ in Bihar were extended to other states namely- Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal in eastern India. Out of the total highly suitable estimated areas, maximum were located in Bihar (65.0 per cent) followed by Uttar Pradesh (12.3 per cent), Jharkhand (12.2 per cent) and West Bengal (10.5 per cent). Based on future predicted climate data for the year 2050 the habitat suitability map indicated that out of the total high suitable areas, Bihar had maximum area as compared to the other three states. Predicted climate data using ‘BioClim’ variables showed that high suitable areas shifted from major part in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal and negligible areas bordering Katihar district of Bihar. While predicted climate data for the year 2050 and 2070 showed high suitable areas in West Bengal, especially Malda and Dakschin Dinajpur districts completely shrank due to temperature rise; while Uttar Dinajpur (Goal Pokhar-I, Goal Pokhar-II and Islampur districts) appeared as new areas. In Uttar Pradesh, new districts viz. Balrampur and Shravasti were identified as high suitable areas for ‘makhana’ cultivation. As ‘makhana’ is a popular cash crop of eastern part of the country, and has not been cultivated widely in other regions, hence the knowledge on its botany, distribution, cultivation practices and uses are provided.

A new species, Allium negianum (Amaryllidaceae), belongs to the genus Allium subg. Rhizirideum, sect. Eduardia is described here from the Uttarakhand Himalayan region of India. This taxon grows in Malari region of Niti valley in Chamoli district and Dharma valley of Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, India. It is a narrowly distributed species and morphologically more closer to A. przewalskianum Regel but differentiated by its tunic color of bulb, umbel with lax flowers, peduncle length, perigone colour, size and shape and leaf anatomy. Taxonomic delineation and relationship analysis based on nuclear ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacers (ITS) region indicated that A. negianum is distinct and related to A. przewalskianum. This study provided a comprehensive description and comparison with A. przewalskianum, an identification key and notes on the distribution of the species.

The study on Himalayan allium spices was undertaken with specific reference to commercially important taxa belonging to the genus Allium viz. A. stracheyi Baker, A. wallichii Kunth, A. przewaliskianum Regel and an Allium ‘new type’. Based on eco-geographical and morphological studies, the ‘new type’ Allium was identified as ‘neodomesticate’ for the western Himalaya region, Uttarakhand, along with other potential less-known taxa viz. A. stracheyi, A. wallichii, and A. przewaliskianum that are yet to be cultivated on large scale in India. Data on morphological characters of all four species when was subjected to statistical analysis Allium ‘new type’ grouped closer to A. przewaliskianum as compared to remaining two taxa. The study is aimed to support use of morphological data in species identification besides enhancing knowledge on propagation, post-harvest methods, conservation status and species uses that would facilitate trade related practices for economic enhancement of the farming communities.

Less-known melons belonging to the genus Cucumis melo L. were studied for the Indian region. A total of 39 accessions of distinct types in less-known melons, C. melo subsp. agrestis var. agrestis (local names-‘choti kachri’, ‘badi kachri’, ‘sukkangai’), C. melo subsp. agrestis var. momordica (‘phunt’, ‘vellari’; snap melon), C. melo subsp. agrestis var. conomon (‘sohthiar’; oriental pickling melon), C. melo subsp. melo var. flexuosus (‘kakdi’, ‘tar’; snake melon) and C. melo subsp. agrestis var. alwarensis (‘arya’) were studied for morphological characters of fruit to identify their genetic resource value. Out of 39 accessions, four taxa were selected for nutritional analysis and the floral diversity study on the basis of research gaps, status of diversity in wild and vulnerability in cultivation, and non-availability of comparative account in the context of diversity in the Indian region. Nutritional components of 12 accessions of four taxa-‘choti kachri’ and ‘badi kachri’, snap melon, snake melon and ‘arya’ were analyzed. Additionally, the floral diversity traits were studied to support marker characters and to classify the subspecies under the respective botanical varieties and cultivar delimitation. Morphologically ‘choti kachri’ and ‘badi kachri’ were identical except for the fruit size and weight; arya and snake melon grouped together with snap melon and other intermediate forms; oriental pickling melon was entirely distinct, more closer to the musk melon but had no fruit aroma. Based on floral diversity study, ‘choti kachri’ and ‘badi kachri’ were grouped together whereas snake melon and ‘arya’ were closer and snap melon showed intermediary position. The result of the nutritional analysis clearly demonstrated variability recorded among accessions for all proximate traits in ‘choti kachri (IC629817) which had the highest proteins (2.16–3.67%), ash content (3.059%), crude fat (0.482%), dietary fibre (4.12%), starch content (3.50%), Fe (4.06 mg/100 g), Zn (1.498 mg/100 g), total phenols (29.5%) and ascorbic acid (25.9 mg/100 g) among the studied melon accessions. On the other hand, ‘badi kachri’ (IC629828) had the least protein, crude fat, Cu, Fe, total phenol and ascorbic acid contents followed by snap melon, snake melon and ‘arya’ with moderate to low values of all nutritive traits. The study would facilitate identification of the distinct morphotypes in each category and grouping the intermediate type and unknown taxa. Fruit nutritional analysis will help in using them for desirable nutritional traits for pre-breeding programmes. Besides, the floral diversity can lead to identification of marker characters in crop improvement programme.

The genus Lathyrus consists of more than 184 herbaceous annual and perennial species suitable for multifaceted sustainable food and feed production system in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world. The grasspea is a promising source of protein nutrition. However, its potential is not being utilized fully due to the presence of neurotoxin content (β-N-oxalyl-l-α, β diaminopropionic acid, β-ODAP), a causal agent of non-reversible lower limbs paralysis. The high protein contents in seeds and leaves with ~90% digestibility make it sustainable super food to beat protein malnutrition in future. Therefore, it is desired to breed new grasspea cultivars with low β-ODAP contents. Limited research has been carried out to date about this feature. A draft genome sequence of grasspea has been recently published that is expected to play a vital role in breeding and identifying the genes responsible for biosynthesis pathway of β-ODAP contents in grasspea. Efforts to increase awareness about the importance of genus Lathyrus and detoxify β-ODAP in grasspea are desired and are in progress. Presently, in South Asia, systematic and dedicated efforts to support the farmers in the grasspea growing regions by disseminating low β-ODAP varieties has resulted in a considerable improvement in reducing the incidence of neurolathyrism. It is expected that the situation will improve further by mainstreaming grasspea cultivation by implementing different approaches such as the development and use of low β-ODAP varieties, strengthening government policies and improved detox methods. The present review provides insight into the multifaceted characteristics of sustainable nutritious grasspea in the global and Indian perspective.

The entire collection of cultivated barley germplasm accessions conserved in the Indian National Genebank (INGB) was characterized for nine qualitative and 8 quantitative traits to assess the nature and magnitude of prevailing genetic variability and to develop a core set. A wide range of variability was observed for days to spike emergence (51-139 days), days to physiological maturity (100-152 days), plant height (45.96-171.32 cm), spike length (3.44-13.73 cm), grain number/spike (10.48-82.35), and 100-grain weight (1.20-6.86 g). Initially, seven independent core sets were derived using 3 core construction tools- MSTRAT, PowerCore, and Core Hunter 3 by employing the maximization method, heuristic sampling, and optimisation of average genetic distances, respectively. The core set-3 generated by Core Hunter 3 by simultaneous optimisation of diversity and representativeness, captured maximum genetic diversity of the whole collection as evident from the desirable genetic distance, variance difference percentage (VD; 87.5%), coincidence rate of range (CR; 94.27%) and variable rate of coefficient of variance (VR; 113.8%), which were more than threshold value of VD (80%), CR (80%), and VR (100%) required for good core collection. The coefficient of variation and Shannon-Weaver diversity indices were increased in the core set as compared with the whole collection. The low value of Kullback-Leibler distance (0.024-0.071) for all traits and quantile-quantile plots revealed a negligible difference between trait distribution patterns among the core set and entire assembly. Correlogram revealed that trait associations and their magnitude were conserved for most of the traits after sampling of the core set. The extraction of the INGB barley core set and identification of promising accessions for agronomically important traits in different genetic backgrounds will pave the way for expedited access to genetically diverse and agronomically important germplasm for barley breeding.

As a legume and a source of protein, hyacinth bean [Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet] serves as a resilient and efficient source not only of calories but also of proteins and has several therapeutic properties besides, which makes it a truly multifunctional legume. The present study describes the wide morphological diversity in “Yoksik peron” (local name of lablab bean) found in Pasighat (East Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh) represented by14 landraces conserved and cultivated by the indigenous people mainly in their backyards and kitchen gardens. The width of the pod ranged from 1.6cm to 4.1cm and its length, from 4.7 cm to 20.1cm. The pods also differed in colour, seed size, and shape. Many of those landraces are more resistant to several biotic and abiotic sources of stress. Such diversity offers the opportunity to identify and select the genotypes with greater tolerance to stress, thereby contributing to making the ecosystem more resilient. In addition, contemporary studies on hyacinth bean have shown the wide range of health benefits it offers, especially its potent anti-obesity properties. To realize the bean’s full potential, we need an enabling policy environment for furthering research and mainstreaming to other locations.

The common cucumber is low in carotenoid content with white flesh colour while orange fleshed cucumber germplasm from north-east region of India has high carotenoid content and thus, appears to be promising for utilization in breeding programme. The current study was conducted on morphological, biochemical and organoleptic assessment of five orange fleshed cucumber germplasm and comparison was drawn with the check variety ‘Pusa Uday’. Since this landrace is not common, botanical description was provided based on morphological observations. A distinct seed morphology with pointed tip of about 0.1 mm at distal end of the seed was noticed in all the carotenoid rich accessions. The carotenoid content of immature and mature fruits ranged from 4.08 to 8.21 and 22.99 to 54.84 (µg/g), respectively as compared to 2.54 µg/g in check variety Pusa Uday. The carotenoid rich germplasm has high potential for enriching food and alleviating vitamin A deficiency in the country. Morphological characters, anatomical evidences, trends of distribution and uses suggest the prevalence of diversity of orange fleshed cucumbers in north-east region of India. The germplasm having common character viz., orange flesh colour in adjoining regions of Myanmar and southern China are indicative of close linkages of continuous variation in this region.

Plant genetic resource collection expedition across various parts of India and herbarium study of Amaranthus and Luffa genera at Botanical Survey of India (BSI), Kolkata and Coimbatore revealed the distribution of 18 plant taxa new to various Indian states/union territory, viz., Arunachal Pradesh (7), Andaman & Nicobar Islands (5), Jammu & Kashmir (3), Andhra Pradesh (2), Manipur (1), and Tamil Nadu (1). Out of these, 14 taxa have importance as wild relatives of 12 crop species. In addition, herbarium studies at the BSI, Kolkata revealed the natural distribution of a cucurbitaceous species – Siraitia siamensis in Myanmar, which remained unnoticed and unreported so far. Locality of herbarium/ germplasm collection, habitat and other field observations have been highlighted here.

Vigna trilobata (L.) Verdc. and V. stipulacea (L.) Kuntz. of section Aconitifoliae were studied based on morphological characters to address taxonomic delineation. We have attempted to resolve the identities of these two species by studying a representative set of collections (125 accessions) across diverse eco-geographical zones of India. Agro-morphological traits were recorded for 47 descriptor states to differentiate the two species. Remarks on some additional characters not reported in earlier studies were highlighted with an aim to facilitate field identification of these taxa and use in their genetic resource management. Key diagnostic characters essential for delineating identities of these two species were presented.

An atypical morphotype of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) was identified during mega germplasm characterization programme at ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi undertaken during rabi 2017–2018. On the basis of the comparative evaluation of lentil morphotype with two distinct subspecies, viz., L. culinaris subsp. macrosperma and L. culinaris subsp. microsperma, this atypical morphotype was classified under the latter subspecies. Based on comparative study with selected accessions for seed morphology, quality traits and physiology, this accession was identified with very distinct and prominent funiculus on the seed coat, higher rate of water uptake and nutritional traits (rich in sugar, starch, protein and minerals). Present studies identified this germplasm as unique type that deserves for the detailed study to explore its genetic resource potential.

An indigenous promising root tuber crop ‘Soh-phlong’ (Flemingia procumbens Roxb.) was studied for morphology and selected proximate components and micro-nutrients in root tubers based on field surveys undertaken in the areas of cultivation. The analysis was presented from the perspective of crop diversification, extended use and value addition for the benefit of farmers. Knowledge on ethnobotanical and domestication trends was revisited for identification of hidden potential value of this crop for search of plant based health supplements and eco-friendly bio-pesticides.

In India, knowledge of the geographic distribution of Trichosanthes species is inadequate, largely due to the lack of revisionary work. Based on field observations, collected specimens and data from herbarium specimens, this paper describes a new taxon – T. dunniana subsp. clarkei from Sikkim and northern hill districts of West Bengal in northeastern India; and presents the first confirmed records of three southeast Asian taxa, viz., T. dunniana subsp. dunniana and T. wallichiana subsp. subrosea from northeastern India, and T. tricuspidata from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The name T. khasiana has been lectotypified, and Indochinese T. inthanonensis has been reduced under it. The southern Chinese Trichosanthes subrosea is transferred at reduced rank as T. wallichiana subsp. subrosea, while T. tridentata has been reduced to synonymy of this subspecies. Furthermore, we provide an updated distribution map with confirmed occurrences of these taxa in India, critical taxonomic notes and additional taxonomic characters.

A less-known landrace of vegetable melon locally called “Arya” (Cucumis melo L.) known for drought tolerant trait was collected from two districts of Rajasthan and Haryana, India. Study was undertaken for preliminary morphological evaluation, biochemical and organoleptic test. A comparative study with snake melon was presented with field identification traits along with cultural practices and economic uses. The work aims at facilitating germplasm collection, detailed evaluation and systematic study on this valuable material with the prospects of crop diversification and value addition.

Allium fasciculatum Rendle (subgenus Amerallium, section Bromatorrhiza), an underutilized species from north eastern India was investigated for taxonomy and character variation based on data from field, experimental, herbarium and eco-geographical study. In addition comparative study with a close relative, A. hookeri was undertaken and was presented. Trends of domestication of A. fasciculatum and an identification key to subg. Amerallium sect. Bromatorrhiza were discussed to facilitate collection and conservation of germplasm.

Nematicidal property was identified for the first time in root tubers of Flemingia procumbens, an underutilized native crop species grown in the tribal tracts of Khasi and Jaintia hills of Meghalaya, India. In vitro studies were conducted on second stage juveniles (J2s) of root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, which is a most economically important and commonly found nematode in cultivated fields. Powder extract of small, medium and large size tubers of F. procumbens was tested in vitro against J2s of M. incognita. All the three types of powder extracts were found effective and caused varied mortality in J2s of M. incognita in the range of 88–95% at 100 mg/ml after 72 h exposure. The methodology developed is based on preliminary study and can be standardized for precision following further research investigations.

During survey and exploration undertaken for collection of germplasm of crop wild relatives from terai region (foothills) of Uttarakhand and parts of Uttar Pradesh, a wild species of okra [Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medik. subsp. tetraphyllus (Roxb. ex Hornem.) Borss. Waalk.] locally called “Sukhlai” being used as organic clearant in small scale jaggery industry was reported for the first time under cultivation in farmers’ field. There is no specific documentation on its commercial cultivation for the above use. Variability study was undertaken for cultivated and wild types in areas of exploration to work out trends of domestication. Brief information on botany, distribution, genetic resource value and methodology of use of the species in jaggery industry has been discussed.

Forty-nine accessions of cultivated holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum L.) representing four phytogeographical regions of India were characterized for 18 qualitative and 14 quantitative traits using minimal descriptors developed by the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources with minor modifications. Dendrograms were constructed using Ward’s Minimum Variance method. Analysis showed high degree of variation among studied accessions indicating rich diversity represented within the populations from different phytogeographical regions and relatedness among the morphotypes.

Millets having traits such as rich fibre content, non­starchy polysaccharides with some unique nutrients have attained recognition of "Nutritious or Nutri grains" since they possess some unique proteins and essential amino acids that are better in quality [1]. Millets grow well in arid and semi-arid environments, requiring less water than other grains. Short duration conditions, high adaptability to drought, hardiness and delayed monsoon conditions with poor soil nutrients, have widened the scope of their cultivation in semi-arid region under marginal lands [2].

A new species of Herpetospermum (Schizopeponeae, Cucurbitaceae) is described from north-eastern India, northern Myanmar and southwest China (Xizang and Yunnan). Herpetospermum operculatum was previously confused with Herpetospermum (= Biswarea) tonglense, but differs primarily in having smooth yellow-striped fruit with operculum at stylar end, ascendent seed arrangement in fruit and prominent probracts and bracts. At least a part of the collections of Herpetospermum tonglense in Myanmar and China represent misidentification of this species.

Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum Rottler ex Sprengel) is a less known cultivated vegetable in western and eastern Himalayan regions of India. This species is reported here for its potential for commercialization to supplement the onion and garlic production in different parts of India especially under the present unpredictable climatic conditions. Due to multipurpose use and wider adaptability of the species future thrust is laid on collection and conservation programmes in India.

A morphotype of chinese chives (Allium tuberosum Rottler ex Spreng.) with pink mid-vein in white tepals on the abaxial surface growing in Leh, Ladakh (Jammu & Kashmir), India was studied on a comparative account with common type A. tuberosum (white tepals with green mid-vein) and a close wild relative, A. ramosum L. Allium subg. Butomissa (Salisb.) N. Friesen is discussed here with reference to taxa in India based on the study undertaken using observations from field, experimental, ecogeographical, herbarium and molecular data. A key is provided with some characters previously not included in the available diagnostic keys. Issues relating to use of terminology for plant characters are provided to the facilitate fi eld identification.

This article deals with the study on morphological variability of underutilized root crop ‘Soh-phlong’(Flemingia procumbens Roxb.) collected through exploration in Meghalaya, India. A total of 27 accessions studied for tuber characters, viz., size, shape, skin colour, taste and texture of epidermis, revealed significant good variation. Thrust areas for future aspects of plant genetic resource (PGR) value and its management have been highlighted.

Seeds of wild and cultivated species ofLuffawere studied to determine the variability in morphological (seed size, colour, seed-coat surface and 100-seed weight) and biochemical (oil and protein) characteristics. A total of 80 accessions of three cultivated species (71 accessions) and three wild species (9 accessions) ofLuffaunder the present investigation from diverse regions (12 states of five regions) of India showed variations in seed size, colour, seed-coat surface, 100-seed weight, and seed protein and oil contents both within the accessions of the same species and between different species. Significant variability in seed morphological traits was observed. Both seed oil and soluble seed protein contents were highest in some accessions of the cultivated species (25–27% oil and 8–10% protein, respectively, on a fresh seed weight basis). Using the 2D scatter plot diagram derived from the principal components analysis, the morphological and biochemical traits of the 80Luffaaccessions classified the wild species into one cluster (cluster I) and the cultivated species into a second major cluster (cluster II). The present investigation on the correlation between seed morphology and biochemical traits in the cultivated and wild species ofLuffacan help in identifying the genotypes ofLuffaspecies with valuable traits for further exploring the potential of this valuable crop as a source of edible oil, food and fodder in edible seed types or as a source of industrial oil/biodiesel in non-edible seed types. The protein-rich seed could be further explored to be utilized in the fortification of food products for value addition.

Immature fruits of cultivated species of Luffa are commonly used as summer vegetable in India. Rich morphological variability occurs in cultivated species of Luffa in different growing regions of the country. To study morphological variability in cultivated and wild Luffa from different agro-ecological regions of India, a total of seventy accessions were assembled. Morphological variations in leaf, fruit and seed characters were found to delimit cultivated and wild Luffa species. Cluster analysis revealed two major clusters, one comprising of 36 accessions of Luffa acutangula and the other of 30 accessions belonging to L. aegyptiaca. A local cultivar “Satputia” (L. hermaphrodita) was classified along with cultivated L. acutangula and wild L. acutangula var. amara. Wild species namely L. graveolens and L. echinata were clustered closer to the L. acutangula.
