The μDose system is a recently developed analytical instrument applying a combined α- and β-sensitive scintillation technique for determining the radioactivity arising from the decay chains of 235U, 238U and 232Th as well as from the decay of 40K. The device was designed to meet the particular requirements of trapped charge dating methods and allows the assessment of environmental (i.e. low) levels of natural radionuclides. The μDose system was developed as a piece of low-cost laboratory equipment, but a systematic test of its performance is still pending. For the first time, we present results from a comprehensive performance test based on an inter-laboratory comparison. We compare the results obtained with μDose measurements with those from thick source alpha counting (TSAC), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and low-level high-resolution gamma spectrometry (HRGS) applied in five participating laboratories. In addition, the reproducibility and accuracy of μDose measurements were tested on certified reference materials distributed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA; RGU-1, RGTh-1 and RGK-1) and on two loess standards (Nussy and Volkegem) frequently used in trapped charge dating studies. We compare μDose-based results for a total of 47 sediment samples with results previously obtained for these materials by well-established methods of dose rate determination. The investigated natural samples cover a great variety of environments, including fluvial, aeolian, littoral, colluvial and (geo-)archaeological sites originating from high and low mountain regions as well as from lowlands in tropical areas, drylands and mid-latitude zones of Europe, Africa, Australia, Central Asia and the Americas. Our results suggest the μDose system's capability of assessing low-level radionuclide contents with very good accuracy and precision comparable to well-established dosimetry methods. Based on the results of our comparative study and with respect to the practical experiences gained so far, the μDose system appears to be a promising tool for trapped charge dating studies.

This study reconstructs the coastal subsidence over the past 1300 years in a mangrove region along the coast of the Ganges–Brahmaputra Delta, an area not affected by anthropogenic interference. The relative sea level (RSL) history is based on radiocarbon and luminescence ages measured on 108 submerged kilns and in situ mangrove stumps. While the regional, long-term average subsidence rate is calculated to be 2.7 ± 0.3 mm/yr, modern RSL (including eustacy, isostasy, ocean level, and subsidence) rises by 8.7 ± 0.4 mm/yr. This rate has been balanced by natural sediment accretion so far. A reduction in sediment supply by engineering projects along rivers and coasts may, however, accelerate coastal inundation and retreat. Subsidence has accelerated during specific episodes since the eighth century. A major land-sinking event happened in the eighteenth century, with a downward displacement of 1–2 m, depending on geographic area. We propose that the subduction-related 1762 Arakan earthquake caused this sudden lowering. Prior to this event, RSL was nearly stable for 900 years. An earlier major subsidence event occurred around 900 CE, when the land suddenly sank by about 1 m, which also coincided with a major earthquake along the Arakan coast. Event-driven, sudden, significant subsidence, thus, needs to be considered a potential major hazard for coastal Bangladesh.

Wave-transported boulders represent important records of storm and tsunami impact over geological timescales. Their use for hazard assessment requires chronological information on their displacement that in many cases cannot be achieved by established dating approaches. To fill this gap, this study investigated, for the first time, the potential of optically stimulated luminescence rock surface exposure dating (OSL-RSED) for estimating cliff-detachment ages of wave-transported coastal boulders. The approach was tested on calcarenite clasts at the Rabat coast, Morocco. Calibration of the OSL-RSED model was based on samples with rock surfaces exposed to sunlight for ∼ 2 years, and OSL exposure ages were evaluated against age control deduced from satellite images. Our results show that the dating precision is limited for all targeted boulders due to the local source rock lithology which has low amounts of quartz and feldspar. The dating accuracy may be affected by erosion rates on boulder surfaces of 0.02–0.18 mm yr−1. Nevertheless, we propose a robust relative chronology for boulders that are not affected by significant post-depositional erosion and that share surface angles of inclination with the calibration samples. The relative chronology indicates that (i) most boulders were detached from the cliff by storm waves; (ii) these storms lifted boulders with masses of up to ∼ 24 t; and (iii) the role of storms in the formation of boulder deposits along the Rabat coast is more significant than previously assumed. Although OSL-RSED cannot provide reliable absolute exposure ages for the coastal boulders in this study, the approach has large potential for boulder deposits composed of rocks with larger amounts of quartz or feldspar and less susceptibility to erosion.

Glacial and lacustrine sediments from the Mongolian Altai provide paleoclimatic information for the late Pleistocene in Mongolia, for which only a few sufficiently studied archives exist. Glacial stages referred to global cooling events are reported for the last glacial maximum (27–21 ka) and the late glacial period (18–16 ka). Sedimentary archives from the first part of the last glacial period are infrequent. We present proxy data for this period from two different archives (88–63 and 57–30 ka). Due to the limitation of effective moisture, an increase of precipitation is discussed as one trigger for glacier development in the cold-arid regions of central Asia. Our pollen analysis from periods of high paleolake levels in small catchments indicate that the vegetation was sparse and of dry desert type between 42–29 and 17–11 ka. This apparent contradiction between high lake levels and dry landscape conditions, the latter supported by intensified eolian processes, points to lower temperatures and cooler conditions causing reduced evaporation to be the main trigger for the high lake levels during glacier advances. Rising temperatures that cause melting of glacier and permafrost ice and geomorphological processes play a role in paleolake conditions. Interpreting lake-level changes as regional or global paleoclimate signals requires detailed investigation of geomorphological settings and mountain–basin relationships.

Coastal alluvial fans (CAF) are important geo-archives due to their sensitivity to both tectonic activity and climatic changes. Thus, they can give key insights for geomorphic and sedimentary processes. In this study we test the potential of K-feldspar post infrared-infrared stimulated luminescence (pIR-IRSL) and quartz electron spin resonance (ESR) methods for dating alluvial fan complexes in arid environments. The existing chronological data from marine terraces that interact with CAF make the Atacama Desert in northern Chile an excellent setting for this research. Samples have been collected from alluvial, marine and aeolian sediments embedded in the CAF complexes, allowing evaluation of the different signal properties and bleaching characteristics of the pIR-IRSL and ESR signals over Late Pleistocene time scales. pIR-IRSL dose distributions of clast-rich alluvial fan samples are characterised by higher scatter and demonstrate heterogeneous bleaching, while matrix-rich alluvial fan deposits show rather homogeneous poor bleaching in the dose dispersion as indicated by a modern analogue sample. In contrast, marine and aeolian deposits are homogeneously well bleached, supported by a modern littoral sample. Following the quartz multiple centre (MC) ESR dating approach (Al and Ti centres), bleaching of the different centres prior to deposition has been achieved. While the Ti–H centre provides mostly lower doses than the Ti–Li centre, in most cases the Al centre provides the highest dose values. This pattern is consistent with their respective bleaching kinetics and suggests that the Ti centre signals most likely provide the closest estimate to the true burial dose for samples with doses >200 Gy. ESR and pIR-IRSL ages are consistent at 2σ for the marine, aeolian and clast-rich debris-flow deposits, which is in agreement with existing chronological data in this area. It appears that the mode of sediment transport on alluvial fans, either as matrix- or clast-rich flows, plays an important role in sediment bleaching. While clast-rich alluvial fan deposits are likely better bleached, we cannot exclude insufficient bleaching during matrix-rich alluvial fan flows; our dating results suggest that both pIR-IRSL and ESR dating overestimate the true burial age. The combination of pIR-IRSL and MC ESR dating can be considered as a promising tool for deciphering alluvial fan formation over (Late) Pleistocene time scales.

Geological records indicate that the hyper-aridity in the Atacama Desert has prevailed since at least the mid-Miocene, with shorter periods of increased humidity punctuating long-term aridity. The 7-m-high accumulation of colluvial sediments at the Salar Grande (21°S/70°W) studied here provides a key palaeoclimate record to understand hillslope dynamics and its relation to humid periods. While 10Be surface exposure ages point to long-term surface stability of the flat upslope surface, a combination of humidity-driven soil creep, overland flow and soil creep related to seismic shaking, caused denudation of the hillslope and accumulation of several metres of colluvium over much shorter timescales during the last 130 ka. A robust chronology for the hillslope sediments has been established by using Infrared Stimulated luminescence (pIR-IR225 protocol) on K-feldspar extracts from nine samples collected within the accumulation. A series of tests has been carried out to confirm the suitability of the method. The estimated ages indicate accelerated sedimentation at 35–80 ka, and 100–130 ka, which are interpreted as periods with more humid climate conditions than present. These findings agree with climate variations in the hyper-arid Atacama indicated by the activity of coastal alluvial fans and river catchments.

While OSL rock surface exposure dating cannot provide reliable absolute exposure ages for the coastal boulders from Rabat, the approach has great potential for boulder deposits composed of rocks with larger amounts of quartz or feldspar, older formation histories and lower susceptibility for erosion.

The Shirasuka lowlands, located on the Enshu-nada coast of central Japan, record evidence for numerous extreme wave events. Here we test the applicability of using the luminescence signal from feldspars to date these young (130 procedure. We demonstrate that this IRSL50 (pre-IR130) signal results in reliable ages when corrected for fading, and the post-IR IRSL130 stimulation functions as an optical wash for both the natural/regenerated luminescence signal (Lx) and the test dose signal (Tx), lowering the recuperation and removing any remaining charge from previous steps in the protocol. The single grain IRSL50 (pre-IR130) ages generated cover the historical record of the past 800 years and correlate well with past earthquakes and tsunamis in 1361 CE, 1498 CE and 1605 CE. Another identified tsunami deposit may correlate with the 1707 CE earthquake and tsunami. A slope failure deposit, probably caused by the earthquake in 1944 CE, is also identified. This study demonstrates that accurate ages can be determined for the young, extreme wave events at this site using the luminescence signal from feldspars.

The prehistoric site of Ifri n'Ammar is situated in northeastern Morocco, in the northern prolongation of the Middle Atlas Mountains. It is a key location in unravelling the history of anatomically modern humans (AMH) in northern Africa as it reveals Middle and Late Palaeolithic occupation phases since ∼170 ka. Whilst the archaeological sequence within the rock shelter has been well studied, the timing of landscape dynamics around Ifri n'Ammar is still poorly understood. This study therefore aims to establish a detailed chronology of the Wadi Selloum profile at the apron of the shelter, based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of ephemeral stream deposits. Coarse-grain quartz was used for single-grain and multiple-grain dating procedures to investigate the luminescence properties of these deposits and to get more accurate age information concerning the phases of human occupation. Continuous wave OSL (CW-OSL) revealed a dominant fast component for all quartz samples. The dose distribution of the uppermost samples showed overdispersion values >25% and significant positive skewness. We identified partial bleaching as the main source of scatter in the equivalent dose (D e ) distribution. The lowermost sample appeared to be close to signal saturation. The shapes of the dose response curve varied widely between aliquots and coarse quartz grains exhibited therefore very different dose saturation behaviours among aliquots. With fully saturated dose response curves (DRCs), meaningful D 0 values were assumed for D e estimation. The eight OSL samples yielded stratigraphically consistent ages ranging from 1.3 ± 0.2 ka to 76 ± 5 ka, thus reaching the Middle Palaeolithic period. Moreover, a pottery shard dated to 7.4 ± 0.6 ka (Early Neolithic period) by thermoluminescence (TL), perfectly matched the Holocene OSL samples extracted at the same depth of the profile. In summary, our results point to fluvial aggradation during OIS 5.1, the late glacial period, and the Holocene.

Along the Chilean–Peruvian coast, numerous archaeological sites associated with shell accumulations provide evidence for the role of coastal environments as a natural corridor for the human occupation of South America. In particular, the semi-arid coastline of northern Central Chile (∼33–27° S) is a key area for investigating the relationship between human occupation history and past climate changes, as palaeoenvironmental studies record important climatic fluctuations in the area throughout the Holocene. In this study, we present a consistent chronology of an anthropogenic shell accumulation layer and an associated palaeosol, found in the stratigraphy of palaeodunes in the Longotoma dune system, northern Central Chile (32°24′ S, 71°23′ W). Infrared Stimulated Luminescence (IRSL) dating of feldspars is used, for the first time in this context, to establish the chronological framework together with radiocarbon dating. The consistency between IRSL- and radiocarbon ages demonstrates the potential of IRSL techniques for studies in comparable settings and at similar time scales, where Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating of quartz is problematic. The chronostratigraphical results (i) allow to infer different phases of dune activity as well as an intermittent period of interdunal soil formation at the end of the 6th millennium BP, when the cultural layer and the palaeosol formed; (ii) allocate an age range of ∼4500–3500 a to alluvial deposits below the modern dune corridor; and thereby (iii) give further evidence for the presence of Archaic coastal hunter-gatherer populations in the La Ligua Bay and in northern Central Chile.

The Paleolithic sites Românesti and Cosava, situated at the foothills of the Banat Mountains in Romania, provide an important testament of life of the first European modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens) during Middle Pleniglacial. Even though these sites have been extensively excavated, little is known about the site formation of related loess-like sediments and soils. First luminescence data at the two investigated sections confirm sediments from the penultimate glacial period to the Holocene. Assigning the levels of findings is difficult, because the sediments are close to the surface and are overprinted by recent soil development. Albeluvisols, influenced by stagnic features, are the typical surface soils in the study area and on comparable morphological positions in the region. Laboratory analysis has revealed that this soil has a complex genesis from hydrolysis weathering, which is connected with the development of a fragic soil horizon, overprinting the major find horizons at both sites. By using sedimentological and geochemical methods in combination, this study aims to reconstruct sedimentary evolution and soil processes at the sites, as well as to evaluate the state of preservation and the actual content of the archeological contexts. Initial results indicate hints for a forest step and higher vegetation during MIS 3 at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in the Western Plain of Romania. These natural factors offer a local attractiveness of the region which could be the most important reason for the occurrence of first Anatomically Modern Humans. Our investigations lend a better understanding of the paleoenvironment as well as a first age control of Paleolithic levels for the region.

The densely populated, low-lying Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta is highly vulnerable to global sea-level rise. In order to estimate the rate of subsidence of the delta, we examined submerged salt-producing kiln sites in the coastal Sundarbans (a huge UNESCO-protected mangrove forest). These kilns were built just above the winterly spring high-tide level of the time, but their bases are currently located ∼155 cm below the corresponding modern level. According to optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, the kilns were last fired ∼300 yr ago, and salt production was terminated by a catastrophic event that affected the kiln sites at different levels and locations. 14 C ages of charcoal at the kilns’ bases and associated mangrove stump horizons support the OSL dates. Based on the elevations and ages, the 300 yr average rate of sinking of the outer delta is 5.2 ± 1.2 mm/yr, which includes 0.8 mm/yr of eustatic sea-level rise. With the expectation of further acceleration of sea-level rise, the already-present problematic situation will be aggravated, and only prudent control of sediment accretion will keep southern Bangladesh above sea level.

The extent of Last Glacial Maximum ice in South Georgia is contested, with two alternative hypotheses: an extensive (maximum) model of ice reaching the edge of the continental shelf, or a restricted (minimum) model with ice constrained within the inner fjords. We present a new relative sea-level dataset for South Georgia, summarising published and new geomorphological evidence for the marine limit and elevations of former sea levels on the island. Using a glacial isostatic adjustment model (ALMA) specifically suited to regional modelling and working at high spatial resolutions, combined with a series of simulated ice-load histories, we use the relative sea-level data to test between the restricted and extensive ice extent scenarios. The model results suggest that there was most likely an extensive Last Glacial Maximum glaciation of South Georgia, implying that the island was covered by thick (>1000 m) ice, probably to the edge of the continental shelf, with deglaciation occurring relatively early (ca. 15 ka BP, though independent data suggest this may have been as early as 18 ka). The presence of an extensive ice cap extending to the shelf edge would imply that if there were any biological refugia around South Georgia, they must have been relatively localised and restricted to the outermost shelf. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Owing to a thick blanket of loess and other later geological disruptions, the earliest hominins to reach Europe are hard to find. To a handful of possible sites, our authors add a new assemblage of lithics with a clear local context and corroborated OSL ages. Ancient humans were present in what is now Romania between 300 000 and 400 000 years ago.

The stabilized northwestern (NW) Negev vegetated linear dunes (VLD) of Israel extend over 1300 km 2 and form the eastern end of the Northern Sinai – NW Negev Erg. This study aimed at identifying primary and subsequent dune incursions and episodes of dune elongation by investigating dune geomorphology, stratigraphy and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. Thirty-five dune and interdune exposed and drilled section were studied and sampled for sedimentological analyses and OSL dating, enabling spatial and temporal elucidation of the NW Negev dunefield evolution. In a global perspective the NW Negev dunefield is relatively young. Though sporadic sand deposition has occurred during the past 100 ka, dunes began to accumulate over large portions of the dunefield area only at ∼23 ka. Three main chronostratigraphic units, corresponding to three (OSL) age clusters, were found throughout most of the dunefield, indicating three main dune mobilizations: late to post last glacial maximum (LGM) at 18–11.5 ka, late Holocene (2–0.8 ka), and modern (150–8 years). The post-LGM phase is the most extensive and it defined the current dunefield boundaries. It involved several episodes of dune incursions and damming of drainage systems. Dune advancement often occurred in rapid pulses and the orientation of VLD long axes indicates similar long-term wind directions. The late Holocene episode included partial incursion of new sand, reworking of Late Pleistocene dunes as well as limited redeposition. The modern sand movement only reactivated older dunes and did not lengthen VLDs. This aeolian record fits well with other regional aeolian sections. We suggest that sand supply and storage in Sinai was initiated by the Late Pleistocene exposure of the Nile Delta sands. Late Pleistocene winds, substantially stronger than those usually prevailing since the onset of the Holocene, are suggested to have transported the dune sands across Sinai and into the northwestern Negev. Our results demonstrate the sensitivity of vegetated linear dunes located along the (northern) fringe of the sub-tropical desert belt to climate change (i.e. wind) and sediment supply.

Shallow marine and intertidal shell rich sediments from the low coastal plain of Dubai were dated by optically stimulated luminescence. Combined high-resolution gamma spectrometry and ICP–MS analyses revealed significant disequilibria in the 238 U decay series. Time dependent dose rates were modelled for two scenarios including a closed system and an open system with linear U and Ra uptake. OSL ages that were calculated using the linear uptake model are in good agreement with archaeological evidence and radiocarbon datings on shells and wood. The presented results illustrate that luminescence-dating techniques are suitable to set up a chronostratigraphic frame for calcareous coastal environments if an appropriate model is applied to consider the influence of radioactive disequilibria and time dependent dose rates. A comprehensive radionuclide analysis of the sediments is thought necessary to perform geochemically supported dose rate simulations.

Geomorphological investigations in the Russian Altai Mountains provide evidence for the extent and timing of Late Quaternary glaciations and aeolian sediments. Infrared optically stimulated luminescence (IR-OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) dating of aeolian sediments from the central part of the Russian Altai were carried out on silty and sandy sediments that cover fluvial and glacio-fluvial terraces. Most samples from loess, loess-like sediments and sandy loess taken from different terrace sequences within the Altai Mountains provide IRSL ages suggesting a main aeolian deposition period between 25 and 15 ka. These data are consistent with those from the adjacent Mongolian Altai. Sand and silt layers within moraines yielded IRSL age estimates between 22 and 19 ka and correlate to the ice margins of the Last Glacial Maximum. Aeolian dune sands overlying or neighbouring the loess-like sediments and the fluvial terraces at some places provide evidence for Late Glacial (around 15 ka) and Early Holocene (around 9 ka) aeolian activity. The youngest sand sheets gave deposition ages of about 1.5 ka. These sediments covered graves and are related to overgrazing. They provide evidence for the significant human impact on the environment. Fluvial sediments, including silt and sandy gravel intermingled with charcoal, yielded contradicting radiocarbon and luminescence ages. IRSL age estimates obtained for the silty layers range from 19 to 18 ka and are significantly older than the radiocarbon ages, which gave sub-recent ages between 1170 and 910 BP. These data indicate fluvial sedimentation of debris and mudflows in a period of deforestation and strong soil erosion related to mining activities during the 9th and 10th century.

Loess, loess-like sediments and the intercalated palaeosols along the bluffs of the river Yenisei provide a detailed Upper Pleistocene climate archive for the southern part of Middle Siberia. The section at Kurtak is one of the most detailed loess/palaeosol sequences in Middle Siberia. Two major periods of sediment accumulation were recorded in the sequence: the stratigraphically oldest one post-dating the last interglacial palaeosol and pre-dating the Kurtak Pedocomplex (oxygen isotope stage (OIS) 3); the younger one post-dating the Kurtak Pedocomplex and predating the Holocene soil. Three major phases of soil formation occurred during the Upper Pleistocene. The Kameny Log Pedocomplex (OIS 5e) consists of at least two pedogenetic episodes, a lower clayey chernozem forming during a more humid and warmer climate than today, and an upper chernozem representing a drier climate than today, the latter one including a well-pronounced carbonate-rich horizon. The Sukhoy Log Pedocomplex consists of a chernozem-like palaeosol and two kastanozjems (OIS 5c-a) and the Kurtak pedocomplex (OIS 3) with two chernozem-like palaeosols and up to three humic-rich layers. Additionally, weakly developed gleyed horizons are considered to represent palaeohydrological groundwater high levels. The results indicate a synchronous evolution of climate and environment change in both the more oceanic driven climate of West and Central Europe and Middle Siberia, as evidenced by luminescence dating results.

The loess/palaeosol sequence of Kurtak, situated at the western bank of the upper Yenisei in Middle Siberia, represents one of the best developed Middle and Upper Pleistocene sediment records in Yenisei Siberia. More than 40 m thick loess and loess-like sediments intercalated by at least four pedocomplexes are exposed at a steep erosional slope at the bank of the Krasnoyarsk Water Reservoir. Infrared optically stimulated luminescence (IRSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) dating techniques have been applied on 38 fine grain samples from the upper 23 m of the profile, representing the penultimate and last interglacial–glacial cycle. The IRSL and TL age estimates are in good agreement with the geological estimates up to the last interglacial soil horizon (oxygen isotope substage (OIS) 5e). The luminescence ages show that the lowermost truncated palaeosol of kastanosjem-type is likely to have formed during the penultimate interglacial upon subaerial deposits. Three weak reddish brown palaeosols intercalated by reworked loess-like sediments correlate with early Upper Pleistocene interstadials (OIS5dion of -a), and a succession of humic horizons alternated by cryoturbation processes (Kurtak pedocomplex) is linked with OIS 3. Thick loess deposits between the pedocomplexes show now significant age increase with depth, indicating high accumulation rates at around 23 ka (OIS 2) and 60 ka (OIS 4).

This paper reports the application of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to relatively coarse grains (100–200 μm) of quartz extracted from loess. Two approaches were tested – a multiple aliquot technique and a new single aliquot approach, which is especially suited to the dating of small quantities of such grains found in some loess. The results are compared with infra-red stimulated luminescence and thermoluminescence (TL) measurements on the finer-grained (4–11 μm) polymineral fraction and TL measurements on the relatively coarse grains of quartz. The advantages of the new single aliquot (OSL) approach are described and the iterating, computer-controlled measurement procedure is given. The automated iterative single aliquot regeneration (AISAR) method corrects for changes in luminescence sensitivity during the measurement sequence by monitoring the response to a test dose. Some initial measurements are presented for the loess section at Zemechy, Czech Republic, and these show that the AISAR method gives more precise results than those using a multiple aliquot method. Combined infrared and green light stimulated luminescence and thermoluminescence dating applied to the extensively studied Bohemian and Moravian loess/palaeosol sequences from Sedlec Suchdol, Kutna Hora, Dolni Věstonice, Lechovice, Modřice, Bulhary and Cervený Kopec provides a reliable chronological framework for the last interglacial/glacial cycle. Based on this luminescence dating study a new chronology is proposed for the last interglacial/glacial loess/palaeosol sequences from the Czech Republic. IRSL and TL dating suggests that the Bt horizon of a truncated brown forest soil (lower PK III) formed during the Last Interglacial, equivalent to Oxygen Isotope Substage 5e. The upper chernozem of PKII belongs to oxygen isotope stage 3, if the combined IRSL and TL age estimates are taken into account, although from geological estimates an age range within OI Substage 5a is most likely. The Upper Weichselian loess accumulated at a very high rate. Owing to the high accumulation rate there is no time difference in sedimentation ages between the tundra gley palaeosols above PK I, which include the Upper Weichselian sediments in Central Europe.

International audience; Luminescence dating is a leading technique for a large spectrum of Quaternary dating applications. Since the development of automated reader systems, handling great amounts of samples has become possible. A large quantity of data is produced in a short time and a detailed check of every single curve is often impractical. Therefore, it is important to be confident in excluding any kind of unwanted signal contributions, such as those from sample carriers. For commonly used types of steel and aluminium (Al) carriers from three laboratories, luminescence characteristics of spurious and radiation-induced signals are presented. TL and OSL emissions of discs show natural (Al) and regenerated thermally stable signals in the UV, UV-blue and red detection range. These signals have characteristic saturation doses of several hundred Gy. Furthermore, we demonstrate light insensitive signal components and phototransferred thermoluminescence (PTTL). Due to high scatter between discs, the proportion of unwanted disc signal contribution to the entire signal is difficult to predict, without direct measurement. The sources of these signals are possibly chemical compounds acting as luminophores or oxide layers (Al2O3 layers in case of Al discs).

This paper presents evidence of multiple tsunami impact on the Bay of Palairos-Pogonia, NW Greece, during the Holocene based on detailed geo-scientific studies. Altogether, 41 vibracores were drilled to detect high-energy influence in the stratigraphical record. Layers of coarse-grained allochthonous marine deposits were found intersecting autochthonous fine-grained back beach sediments in the Palairos coastal plain, on top of beach or marly bedrock units at Pogonia beach and along the Pogonia cliff section. High-energy deposits are associated with specific sedimentary structures such as fining upward sequences, rip up-clasts, basal erosional contact, bi- to multimodal grain size distribution, lamination, and co-existence of both well rounded and angular, sharply edged components, all of them typical of tsunami impact. Macro- and microfaunal analyses revealed tsunami-related input of numerous ex situ marine species and mostly angular shell debris into quiescent fresh- to brackish water environments by high-energy and long-distance transport. Geophysical methods helped to find subsurface structures and to seize the lateral extent of tsunami layers. Ca–Fe ratios derived from XRF measurements were used to trace tsunami influence inland. Most important is the widespread spatial distribution of the tsunamites with a lateral extent between 70 m at the Pogonia cliff section, 200 m at Pogonia beach, and 1 km in the central Palairos plain, and overall tendencies of fining and thinning towards inland. Highest elevations of tsunamites were found around Pogonia village at ca. 7.5 m a.s.l. Vibracore data give evidence that the overall coastal evolution has been strongly affected, locally even controlled by multiple high-energy impact. A conspicuous geoarchaeological tsunamite, up to 1.5 m thick, was found at Pogonia cliff consisting of mixed marine (sand, pebbles, bio-erosively altered stones, shell debris, foraminifers) and terrigenous material (abundant ceramic fragments, bones, building material). It is directly associated with the submerged remains of an ancient mole which was destroyed and its building material partly dislocated by the same event. Dating of tsunamites was accomplished by archaeological age determination of diagnostic sherds and by radiocarbon and luminescence dating techniques. Strong tsunami events were dated to the beginning of the 6th, the mid-5th, the 4th/3rd and the late 2nd millennia BC as well as to the 4th/3rd century BC. On a regional scale, the recurrence interval for large events is ca. 500–1000 years. At least twice during the late Holocene, the Palairos coastal plain was flooded quasi-contemporaneously from both the northern and southern side.

International audience; We present a high-resolution and independently dated multiproxy lake sediment record from the paleolake at Les Échets in southeastern France that displays synchronous changes in independent limnic and terrestrial ecosystem proxies, in concert with millennial-scale climate oscillations during the last glacial period. Distinct lake-level fluctuations, low lake organic productivity, and open, treeless vegetation indicate cold and dry conditions in response to Heinrich events. Alternating phases of higher and low lake organic productivity, stratified surface waters and long-lasting lake ice cover, decreased or increased catchment erosion, and tree-dominated or herb-dominated vegetation resemble Dansgaard-Oeschger interstadialstadial variability. Transitions between different ecological states occurred in as little as 40–230 yr and seem to have been controlled by the position of the Polar Front. Ecosystem response after 30 ka suggests that local climate conditions became more important. Our results demonstrate that all parts of the terrestrial system responded to the abrupt and dramatic climatic changes associated with Dansgaard-Oeschger and Heinrich events, and that regional factors modulated ecosystem response.

Ostracods of Middle Pleistocene age were recovered from an escarpment at the northeastern margin of the large Qarhan playa surface in the Qaidam Basin (NW China). The Middle Pleistocene age of the sampled Quan Ji section was determined by means of Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating of seven sediment samples. Among the 31 ostracod taxa identified in total, only Eucypris gyirongensis, Leucocythere dorsotuberosa and Prionocypris gansenensis seem to be restricted to high-altitude sites in Central Asia whereas most taxa are known from a number of European and Siberian (Palaeoarctic) or even Holarctic sites. Laterally widespread sediments and the ostracods from the Quan Ji section suggest the formation of a large freshwater to oligohaline lake of at least several metres in depth in the Qaidam Basin, which is presently dry apart from a few shallow salt lakes.
